Mets starter Clay Holmes out with fractured fibula

Published

on

Manager Carlos Mendoza announced after Friday’s loss to the New York Yankees that starter Clay Holmes suffered a fractured fibula after being struck by a line drive.

“He’s going to be down for a long time,” Mendoza said.

Holmes, 33, had been the Mets’ most consistent starter in this troubled season, posting a glittering 1.86 ERA in eight starts entering Friday, with 37 strikeouts.

He was struck by a 111 m.p.h. line drive from Yankees rookie Spencer Jones to lead off the fourth inning. He remained in the game, facing six more batters, before being lifted after recording one out in the top of the fifth.

Jones learned of the injury to Holmes after the game when speaking to reporters.

“That’s the first I’ve heard of that. I’m sorry,” Jones said. “He’s a friend of mine, we work out in Nashville together. That’s tough to hear.”

Holmes joins a long list of injured Mets that includes shortstop Francisco Lindor (strained left calf), catcher Francisco Alvarez (torn meniscus), outfielder Luis Robert (spine disc herniation) and first-baseman Jorge Polanco (Achilles and wrist).

The Mets, now 18-26, are 7.5 games out of a wild-card spot in the National League.

After a slow first round at Aronimink Golf Club in Philadelphia on Thursday, pace of play was a point of emphasis at the PGA Championship on Friday.

However, when an official approached Justin Thomas and Keegan Bradley, they became animated.

Thomas, a longtime Team USA Ryder Cup member, and Bradley, last year’s United States captain, were on the fourth hole when they were approached by an official in a cart, and the conversation quickly turned into finger-pointing.

Thomas said after the round that he, Bradley and fellow USA Ryder Cupper Cameron Young, who won the Cadillac Championship earlier this month, were put on the clock, with the official telling them to pick up the pace. However, both Bradley and Thomas appeared to point at the group in front of them.

“We just didn’t really agree with it,” Thomas said, citing course conditions, high winds and tough pins. “We were behind. That wasn’t our issue… It’s just the fact that we weren’t holding up the group behind us.”

Thomas said they were caught up with the pace on the very next hole.

Thomas had a lengthy conversation with the official, while Bradley appeared to make his point short and sweet — though he was definitely not happy with the call.

It is a large PGA Championship field, with 156 golfers at the course and groups even starting their rounds on the back nine. The scores have also been rather high, with just 25 players below par at the time of publishing.

Aronimink also features a shared tee box on 1 and 10, holes 9 and 17 crossing paths, and a lengthy par-3 eighth hole that’s causing problems. Three par-3s are over 200 yards on the course, and there is also a 457-yard par 4 on the fourth.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 7 wickets in the 59th match of IPL 2026 on Friday, May 15, at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. However, LSG remained at the bottom of the points table with eight points after playing 12 games.

After being asked to bat first, CSK managed to score 187/5 in 20 overs on the back of an anchoring knock of 71 (42) from uncapped youngster Kartik Sharma. Shivam Dube assisted him with a cameo of 32 (16), providing a blazing finish to the Super Kings in the death overs.

Dewald Brevis (25) chipped in with a breezy contribution in the middle overs. Akash Maharaj Singh stole the show for LSG in the bowling department by picking up three wickets.

Lucknow opener Mitchell Marsh then played a sensational knock of 90 (38) to set a great platform for his side in the chase. He smashed seven sixes and nine fours before departing in the 12th over after putting his side in the driver’s seat. LSG then reached the target comfortably in 16.4 overs to seal the victory.

“Sometimes you have to accept that the opposition simply played better cricket”- Ruturaj Gaikwad after CSK’s loss vs LSG in IPL 2026

At the post-match presentation, Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad reflected on the loss, saying

“I felt there was definitely something in the pitch for the fast bowlers, especially when they hit hard lengths consistently. Their bowlers executed those areas really well and made scoring difficult for us. At one stage, we were probably looking at around 160 or 170, so getting to 180 still felt like a decent effort from the batting group. Credit to their batters as well because they played some exceptional shots during the chase.”

He continued:

“Mitchell Marsh is someone who handles the short ball really well, so the plan was more about hitting those test-match lengths and forcing mistakes. There were moments where we executed well, but they also played some outstanding cricket, especially through the opening partnership. Sometimes you have to accept that the opposition simply played better cricket on the day.”
