7 Fantasy Miniseries That Are True Masterpieces

Published

on

Diving into a miniseries can be a great way to spend a weekend. Miniseries have been around for years before streaming, and now they are perfectly suited for binge-watching. They can be enjoyed as mini-cations from a favorite show that has wrapped for the season or whenever media buffs want a change in their normal viewing schedule. Feeling like a complete narrative that doesn’t extend past its creative boundaries, a miniseries offers an encapsulated, perfect amount of diversion.

When it comes to fantasy miniseries, the world-building quality is dialed up to 11. With faraway places, magic spells, and mythical creatures, the effect is enchanting, and when done well, they can become lasting examples of television excellence. From dinosaur-human paradises to much-anticipated sequels, these fantasy miniseries are some of the best ever made. Whether you’re in the mood for a family-friendly and feel-good escape or a dramatic and adrenaline-filled tale, these fantasy miniseries deserve a spot on your watchlist.

After waiting over three decades for more lore, fan expectations were high for The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. A prequel to the 1982 film, Age of Resistance follows three brave Gelfling as they begin to unravel the lies the wicked Skeksis have been telling their people for years. More often than not, when the buildup is so intense for an oncoming project, there is sure to be some let-down. However, Age of Resistance knocked it out of the park, and both new and loyal fans were satisfied with the skillful storytelling and fantastic special effects.

Although the creators of the show had more planned and the world of Thra is rich and complex enough to support more material, the show was concluded as a miniseries rather than extended as an ongoing one. Netflix has a nasty habit of canceling good shows, and audience receptiveness seems to hold no sway in the studio’s decisions. Luckily, Age of Resistance is a perfect gem as it is. While exploring further into the story would have been rewarding, for those who love layered storytelling, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is an ideal choice.

‘Over the Garden Wall’ (2014)

As Bilbo Baggins once warned Frodo in J.R.R. Tolkien‘s The Lord of the Rings, “It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.” The raison d’être for Over the Garden Wall is in the same vein and follows two brothers who only venture a few steps beyond their normality and find themselves swept away into an entirely new and strange world.

Over the Garden Wall is a perfect blend of folk and Gothic vibes. The mise en scène makes viewers feel unsure, but always curious and trusting that somehow, everything is going to work out in the end. Over the Garden Wall is a visually distinct animated series that feels almost like anime. It tells a weaving, enthralling story with unique visuals and solid voice acting. Over 10 years old, Over the Garden Wall remains one of the top TV shows on Letterboxd and is a traditional autumnal watch for devotees.

If you haven’t seen this cult-favorite sleeper hit, now is your chance to take in The 10th Kingdom. Finally released on streaming this year, U.S. audiences can seize the opportunity to enjoy this early ’00s masterpiece. Featuring Kimberly Williams-Paisley, John Larroquette, Ed O’Neill, Dianne Wiest, and Scott Cohen, it envisions a world within a world, with a magic mirror serving as a portal between the two.

In The 10th Kingdom, Virginia Lewis (Williams-Paisley) travels to the other world and discovers that the princesses most know, such as Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), are now reigning queens in adjacent kingdoms. However, evil queens and nefarious plots are just as real, and Virginia learns that her connection to the magical land runs far deeper than she ever would have expected. The 10th Kingdom is a fabulously fun, fractured fairy tale and is full of cameos by stars like Camryn Manheim, Rutger Hauer, and Warwick Davis. The 10th Kingdom has interesting character journeys, action, romance, and humor. It is one of the best fairy tale TV shows of all time and makes for a highly entertaining watch.

‘Merlin’ (1998)

Not to be confused with the equally awesome TV show starring Colin Morgan, the 1998 miniseries has Sam Neill as the titular character, Merlin. Absolutely loaded with talent, the impressive roster for the miniseries includes Helena Bonham Carter as Morgan Le Fey, James Earl Jones as Mountain King, Isabella Rossellini as Nimue, and Lena Headey as Guinevere. This two-part triumph tells the story of King Arthur (Paul Curran) and how the wizard Merlin influenced his life. Merlin uses an ingenious choice to shift the main attention to Merlin’s side of events rather than Arthur’s, and it makes for a refreshing lens to view the story through.

Neill is a consummate performer, well known in the industry for his ability to bring a substantial level of gravitas to his roles. Watching him as Merlin is highly rewarding as he brings an invigorating amount of depth and allure to the character. Bonham Carter is equally impressive as Morgan Le Fey and shines in Merlin, years before some of her more well-known projects. Merlin has engaging special effects and gripping writing full of intrigue. It is one of the best works done on the legendary source material and is more than deserving of a spot on this list.

Gollum

You carry something heavy — and you carry it alone, even when you don’t have to. You were not born for greatness, and that is precisely why greatness chose you. Your courage is not the roaring, sword-swinging kind; it is quiet, stubborn, and terrifying in its refusal to quit. The Ring weighs on you more than anyone can see, and still you walk toward the fire. That is not weakness. That is the rarest kind of strength there is.

You are, without question, the best of them. Not the most powerful, not the most celebrated — but the most essential. Your loyalty is not a trait; it is a force of nature. You would carry the person you love up the slopes of Mount Doom if it came to that, and we both know you’d do it without being asked. The world needs more people like you, and the world is lucky it has even one.

You were born to lead, and you have spent years running from it. The crown is yours by right, but you know better than anyone that right means nothing without the will and the worthiness to back it up. You are tempered by loss, shaped by long roads, and defined by a code of honour you hold to even when no one is watching. When you finally step forward, the world shifts. Because it was always waiting for you.

You have seen more than you let on, and you say less than you know — which is exactly as it should be. You are a catalyst: you do not fight the battles yourself, you ignite the people who can. Your wisdom comes not from books but from an age of watching what happens when it is ignored. You arrive precisely when you mean to, and your presence alone changes what is possible. A wizard is never late.

Graceful, perceptive, and almost preternaturally calm under pressure — you see things others miss and act before others react. You do not need to make a scene to be remarkable; your presence speaks for itself. You are loyal to those you choose to stand beside, and that choice is not made lightly. You have lived long enough to know that the most beautiful things in this world are also the most fragile, and that is why you fight to protect them.

You are loud, proud, and absolutely formidable — and beneath all of that is one of the most fiercely loyal hearts in Middle-earth. You don’t do anything by half measures. Your friendships are forged like iron, your grudges run as deep as mines, and your courage in battle is the kind that makes legends. You came into this fellowship suspicious of everyone and ended it willing to die for an elf. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

You think in centuries and act in absolutes. Order, dominion, control — not because you are cruel by nature, but because you have decided that the world left to itself always falls apart, and you are the only one with the vision and the will to hold it together. You were not always this. Something was lost, or taken, or betrayed, and the version of you that stands now is the answer to that wound. The tragedy is that you’re not entirely wrong — just entirely too far gone to course-correct.

You are a study in contradiction — pitiable and dangerous, cunning and broken, capable of both cruelty and something that once resembled love. You are defined by loss: of innocence, of self, of the one thing that gave your existence meaning. Two voices war inside you constantly, and the tragedy is that the better one sometimes wins, just not often enough, and never at the right moment. You are a warning, yes — but also a mirror. We are all a little Gollum, given the right ring and enough time.

‘Moon Knight’ (2022)

Moon Knight is a Disney+ miniseries that is absolutely perfect from start to finish. Oscar Isaac is exemplary as Steven Grant, a man whose world is turned upside down when he discovers he has multiple personalities, and one of them can communicate with the Egyptian moon god Khonshu (F. Murray Abraham). To play multiple roles within a body of work requires an extra level of talent, and to have all of those roles inhabit the same being is phenomenal.

Moon Knight is a perfect blend of ancient Egyptian themes and modern-day action. It is enthralling from beginning to end, and audiences can’t help but root for or identify with one or more of the main characters’ personalities. Ethan Hawke is superb as Arthur Harrow, and May Calamawy adds dimension to the series with her stellar performance as Layla El-Faouly. Although Moon Knight is part of the Marvel Comics canon, you don’t have to be a fan of superhero movies to enjoy this thematic triumph. It is a must-see for any cerebral fantasy fan and is one of the best collaborations Marvel and Disney have done to date.

‘Arabian Nights’ (2000)

For anyone who loves storytelling, there is no miniseries better than Arabian Nights. Based on One Thousand and One Nights, a collection of Middle Eastern, South Asian, and North African folktales, Arabian Nights stars Mili Avital as Scheherezade. When Scheherezade weds Sultan Shahryar (Dougray Scott), she must use all of her courage and cunning to not only spare her life, but those of all the women in the kingdom. Driven mad by betrayal, the Sultan distrusts everyone around him, including Scheherezade. As she tells him a story night after night, she cleverly draws out his thoughts and helps him find a path back to sanity.

Arabian Nights has it all. A great cast, fantastic sets, gorgeous costumes, and solid special effects that still look good on camera. Most importantly, Arabian Nights has fantastic storytelling. Scott and Avital are brilliant in their roles, portraying the obvious and underlying motives of their characters. The supporting cast is equally dedicated, with actors like John Leguizamo as Genie of the Lamp, Jim Carter as Ja’far, Rufus Sewell as Ali Baba, and Andy Serkis as Kasim. The chemistry and dynamic between Avital and Scott make the main plot as gripping as the side stories, and Arabian Nights is altogether a fantasy masterpiece.

What if dinosaurs and humans lived together in harmony? That is the unusual premise behind James Gurney‘s beloved book series. Adapting the material to the small screen, Dinotopia became a visually charming and richly rewarding miniseries in 2002. When half-brothers David (Wentworth Miller) and Karl (Tyron Leitso) survive a plane crash, they discover the mysterious land of Dinotopia. The two brothers soon learn that this is a place like no other. In Dinotopia intelligent, speaking dinosaurs live and work together with humans to create an idealistic civilization.

Blending puppetry with computer-generated special effects, Dinotopia is a fully immersive adventure tale that audiences of all ages can enjoy together. David Thewlis, Katie Carr, and Lee Evans join the cast, and each character, whether human or reptile, is charming to watch. Dinotopia is currently free to stream on Pluto TV in the U.S., and now is a perfect time to watch this family-friendly fantasy triumph.

Say Goodbye to Nicole Kidman’s 105-Minute Fantasy Cult Classic Next Month

Published

on

Goran Visnjic stands seductively behind Nicole Kidman in Practical Magic.

From Baz Luhrmann‘s Moulin Rouge! to everyone’s favorite Paddington, Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman has been part of some beloved big-screen projects. Earlier this year, Kidman delivered yet another hit with Scarpetta, a Prime Video hit based on the bestselling book series by Patricia Cornwell, which currently places third on the streamer’s U.S. charts. She has followed this up with another streaming smash that currently tops the Apple TV charts: Margo’s Got Money Troubles.

However, beyond these two new small-screen favorites, Kidman will be returning to theaters later this year with the long-awaited follow-up to a fantasy cult classic. On September 11, Practical Magic 2 will make its theatrical debut, with Kidman and Sandra Bullock reprising their roles as Gillian and Sally Owens, sisters descended from a long line of witches. With Susanne Bier taking over directing duties from Griffin Dune, the sequel features a blend of new and returning faces. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest reprise their roles from the original, with Joey King, Maisie Williams, Solly McLeod, Xolo Maridueña, and Lee Pace added to the ensemble.

The sequel will be based on Alice Hoffman’s 2021 novel, The Book of Magic, which she penned 26 years after the original. The original in question, released in 1995, spawned a 1998 movie adaptation that today holds as one of Kidman’s most underrated projects. Ahead of the sequel, you’ll likely want to catch up on the magic that came before. Alas, you’ll have to hurry, as Practical Magic is reportedly leaving HBO Max on May 1, 2026. A synopsis reads:

“Sally and Gillian Owens, born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian’s vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov, dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic. With policeman Gary Hallet growing suspicious, the girls struggle to resurrect Angelov — and unwittingly inject his corpse with an evil spirit that threatens to end their family line.”

Your Fate Has Been Calculated
You’d Survive In…

Your answers point to the world your instincts were built for. This is the universe your temperament, your survival instincts, and your particular brand of stubbornness were made for.

The Resistance, Zion

The Matrix

You took the red pill a long time ago — probably before anyone offered it to you. You’re a systems thinker who can’t help but notice the seams in things.

  • You’re drawn to understanding how the system works before figuring out how to break it.
  • You’d find the Resistance, or it would find you — your instinct for spotting constructed realities is the machines’ worst nightmare.
  • You function best when you have access to information and the freedom to act on it.
  • The Matrix built an airtight prison. You’d be the one probing the walls for the door.

The Wasteland

Mad Max

The wasteland doesn’t reward the clever or the well-connected — it rewards those who are hard to kill and harder to break. That’s you.

  • You don’t need comfort, community, or a cause larger than the next horizon.
  • You need a vehicle, a clear threat, and enough fuel to outrun it — and you’re good at all three.
  • You are unsentimental enough to survive that world, and decent enough — just barely — to be something more than another raider.
  • In the wasteland, that distinction is everything.

Los Angeles, 2049

Blade Runner

You’d survive here because you know how to exist in moral grey areas without losing yourself completely.

  • You read people accurately, keep your circle small, and ask the questions others prefer not to answer.
  • In a city where humanity is a legal designation rather than a feeling, you hold onto something that keeps you functional.
  • You’re not a hero. But you’re not lost, either.
  • In Blade Runner’s world, that distinction is everything.

Arrakis

Dune

Arrakis is the most hostile environment in the known universe — and you are precisely the kind of person it rewards.

  • Patience, discipline, and political awareness are your core strengths — and on Arrakis, they’re survival tools.
  • You understand that the long game matters more than any single victory.
  • Others come to Dune and are consumed by it. You’d learn its logic and earn its respect.
  • In time, you wouldn’t just survive Arrakis — you’d begin to reshape it.

A Galaxy Far, Far Away

Star Wars

The galaxy far, far away is vast, loud, and in a constant state of violent political upheaval — and you wouldn’t have it any other way.

  • You find meaning in being part of something larger than yourself — a cause, a crew, a rebellion.
  • You’d gravitate toward the Rebellion, or the fringes, or whatever pocket of the galaxy still believes the Empire’s grip can be broken.
  • You fight — not because you have to, but because standing aside isn’t something you’re capable of.
  • In Star Wars, that willingness is what makes all the difference.

What Makes ‘Practical Magic’ a Cult Hit?

For a movie to be considered a cult hit, it must have initially underperformed, most often financially, before bouncing back as an enduring favorite of a dedicated fanbase. Practical Magic certainly hits this criterion, falling to a disappointing $68 million box office haul in 1998, against a reported $60 million budget. The film was also panned by critics upon arrival, earning just 27% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. However, the movie’s 73% audience score on the same site tells the tale of a fantasy effort that received its flowers a little too late.

Practical Magic is leaving HBO Max. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.

Luke Combs Addresses Chances of Him Joining Taylor Sheridan Show

Published

on

Taylor Sheridan has enjoyed finding roles for country singers on his shows — but could Luke Combs usweekly be next?

“If they just want me to play me, then great. I’m in,” Combs, 36, exclusively told Us Weekly at the Time100 Gala on Thursday, April 23.

Combs noted that he wasn’t as sure about a scripted role.

“I don’t know if I’m a TV guy. I’ve got a face for radio,” he said. “I’ve been lucky for that. But I don’t know. I just try to have time for my wife and my kids and not over commit myself to things that maybe I don’t feel like I’m great at. Or maybe I would be good at it.”

Related: Morgan Wade Isn’t the Only Country Singer Who Has Scored a Scripted TV Role

Dutton Ranch‘s Morgan Wade isn’t the only country singer to make the transition to scripted TV roles. Jelly Roll played a scene-stealing character on season 3 of Fire Country, marking his acting debut. Fire Country star — and executive producer — Max Thieriot later told Us Weekly that he “reached out first” to Jelly Roll […]

The musician is already quite booked and busy, telling Us, “I just got so much going on with the music stuff. I want to give everything I have to that because I have such a big team and so many people that depend on me to make music and play shows and go out and do things for people. From employees to fans, I want to give everything I can to that.”

Recently, more and more country singers have made the transition to scripted TV roles. After playing himself on Tulsa King, Jelly Roll played a fictional character on season 3 of Fire Country, which marked his acting debut.

“[Jelly Roll] was finishing drying his hands with a towel in the bathroom at the CMTs [in April 2024]. I ran into him in the bathroom straight up at the CMT Music Awards,” Max Thieriot told Us in 2025 about how he “reached out first” to Jelly Roll after crossing paths at the CMT Music Awards. “I said, ‘Thank you for letting us have some of your songs on the show.’ And he’s like, ‘Dude, how do I get on the show? I’ve been petitioning online and talking to my people and you got to get me on that show.’ He said Fire Country is what he really represents. … He called me the next day and it showed how sincere he was.”

Thieriot, 37, credited Jelly Roll for being so collaborative.

“We worked on coming up with a character [for him] that we all thought would be interesting, unique and special and still. It tells some of the story about second chances and what he really represents,” he noted to Us. “But [it] also feels different from who he is and how people see him day to day as a country singer.”

He concluded, “I don’t know [if we will have more country singers]. I have to wait for the next awards show and I’m just going to set up a chair in the bathroom to start greeting them as they come in. But there’s a few that we’ve been talking with for a while now. Honestly, it would be fun to maybe see both [Kane and Jelly Roll] bring their characters back in some form.”

Over on CBS, star Riley Green joined in several episodes as a former Navy SEAL. Morgan Wade is also becoming part of the Sheridan universe when Dutton Ranch premieres in April.

Sheridan previously recruited Tim McGraw and Faith Hill to play fictional couple James and Margaret Dutton in the Yellowstone prequel series 1883, which ran from 2021 to 2022.

MGK Ignites Heated Industry Feud With Controversial Lyrics

Published

on

London, UK. Yungblud at NME Awards 2020 held at the O2 Brixton Academy, London on February 12th 2020

Machine Gun Kelly is no stranger to controversy, and he’s once again stirring the pot!

The “Emo Girl” artist, born Colson Baker, is back in the spotlight following the release of a new track.

It didn’t take long for the song to make waves, sparking speculation that he may be feuding with fellow artist and collaborator Yungblud.

On Tuesday, April 21, MGK dropped the record “Fix Ur Face” featuring Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, marking his first release since his 2025 album. In the track, he raps, “Mickey Mouse kids turned rockstars / Leaving private schools, tryna be outlaws.”

This particular line has since drawn attention from social media users. While some slammed MGK for it, others suggested it was aimed at the “Abyss” singer.

One user on X wrote, “The funny thing is – Yungblud is more of a legit rockstar and talent than MGK will ever be,” adding that “MGK could stand a bit more schooling considering his 5th grader rhymes.”

A second user remarked, “He’s stupid & only starting up this ‘beef’ w/ Yungblud, only because he wants to be relevant!! MGK is barking up the WRONG TREE & HAD BETTER FIX HIS LIPS!”

Another individual suggested that the cause of the seeming feud was because “Yungblud really thought MGK stole the ‘Color Pink’ from him,” and didn’t care to defend him

While this internet user noted that Kelly “needs to cause drama to stay relevant now he’s not with Megan Fox,” another claimed he “wishes he was Yungblud.”

As fans continue to theorize, a resurfaced 2024 appearance by Yungblud on “The Osbournes Podcast” has added fuel to the conversation.

During the past episode, Kelly Osbourne joked that the “Rap Devil” hitmaker had copied Yungblud’s signature use of pink.

Sharon Osbourne chimed in, showing she was not a fan of saying, “Don’t get me started on that one,” the matriarch said, to which Yungblud replied, “Fair,” per PEOPLE Magazine.

Before the reported tension, the two artists had a history. They collaborated on hits like “I Think I’m Okay” in 2019 and “Acting Like That” in 2020.

MGK has also spoken positively about Yungblud, praising his style, voice, and passion for rock music. He even compared their connection to legendary singers like Elton John and Jimi Hendrix.

While rumors of a musical feud swirl, MGK is also facing renewed tension in his personal life, particularly with Megan Fox.

According to The Blast, Kelly and Fox are said to be navigating another rocky chapter in their co-parenting relationship. Insiders claim MGK has been making efforts to win Fox back, but she remains firm in her decision to move on.

A major source of conflict reportedly centers on their daughter, Saga Blade, after the 37-year-old singer shared photos of Saga on social media, even though her face was covered with emojis.

This left the actress angry, believing that the post was meant to spite her and violated their agreement to keep their child’s images private.

Before insiders revealed the tense situation with Fox and Kelly, the “Transformers” actress had already set a clear boundary online.

After returning to Instagram, Fox reportedly blocked MGK following teasing comments he left under one of her posts.

In the update, Fox channeled a bold gothic aesthetic, wearing a black crop top with thong bottoms that revealed her backside. The daring picture amassed thousands of likes and comments, including a flirty one from Kelly.

Per The Blast, the “Bad Things” rapper commented, “Stoked, I have your phone number.”

Fox blocking Kelly appears to confirm insider claims that the two are not heading toward a reunion.

As The Blast previously reported, sources close to the former couple have revealed that the pair is no longer pursuing a romantic relationship. Instead, the duo is choosing to focus entirely on raising their daughter.

“Their relationship at this point is just about co-parenting,” an insider said. “Megan is focused on her kids and the baby and just getting settled into this new chapter.”

The Best Sci-Fi Series on Apple TV Proves It’s Still the Perfect Weekend Binge

Published

on

03200623_poster_w780.jpg

When Vince Gilligan created the iconic Breaking Bad, he could’ve never picked up a pen (or opened his laptop) again, and his legacy as one of the best would’ve remained. A 16-Primetime Emmy-winning series among countless other accolades, Breaking Bad was so popular, influential, and impressive that it changed television forever, as it became the blueprint for prestige success for streaming and helped define the “Golden Age” of TV.

Almost two decades later, Gilligan continues not to sit still, releasing arguably one of the best shows of this decade as his legacy somehow grows beyond the world of Walter White. The show in question is Pluribus, yet another sci-fi success for Apple TV, that reunited Gilligan with Better Call Saul star Rhea Seehorn. The series is set in a world where humanity has been overtaken by a virus that evolves each person into part of a peaceful hivemind. However, Seehorn’s Carol Sturka is one of just 13 people not to be affected by the so-called “Joining,” with her misery the only thing ready to save humanity from its sickening happiness.

A stunning success for Apple TV, its premiere episode was watched for an impressive 6.4 million hours in just seven days, with the series quickly becoming the most-watched on the streamer worldwide, and eventually breaking the record for Apple TV’s most-watched series of all time. It has now been almost four months since the show’s jaw-dropping finale on December 24, 2025, and it has yet to lose its impact on the streaming charts. At the time of writing, Pluribus is once again one of the ten most-streamed shows on Apple TV in the U.S., on all Amazon channels.

When Will ‘Pluribus’ Return?

With a show this detailed, it’s understandable that time needs to be taken before it can return. However, there has been a trend in recent years for popular shows to take three or more years to return, a situation that Pluribus lovers will be desperate to avoid. In a recent interview, Karolina Wydra, who portrays Zosia in the series, gave our closest hint at when the show could return thus far, saying that she expects production on Season 2 to begin “sometime in the fall.” With that in mind, a late-2027 premiere might be likely for Season 2.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV. Stay tuned to Collider for more streaming stories.

In the TIME interview, the pop star-turned-fashion designer gave insight into how she navigates being a source of constant chatter about her marriage.

“This has been happening since I was 20, so it’s been going on a long time,” Victoria told the outlet. “I have an incredible husband who supports me enormously.”

“We’re always there for each other,” she continued. “And I learned a long time ago to really not listen to the noise. Someone’s always going to have something to say. I focus and I just don’t pay attention to it.”

Beckham also credited the recent documentaries that she and husband David had on Netflix for allowing her to tame her natural need to be in control.

“I always say that I went into the process a control freak and came out a reformed control freak, because I didn’t have that much control,” she revealed. “I learned so much from the process of the documentary. It was like a year’s intense therapy.”

“We always put our children first,” she said. “We love our children so much and have always really focused on protecting our children, but we laugh a lot. David Beckham is really, super funny.”
