Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day made history this past weekend with a record-breaking performance at the box office. The movie delivered the biggest opening-weekend haul in domestic box office history, beating Avengers: Endgame’s seemingly unbeatable record from 2019. Globally, it delivered the second-biggest debut of all time and has already hit the coveted $1 billion mark. In less than one week of release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has outgrossed some of the biggest superhero movies of all time, including Spider-Man: Homecoming, which marked Tom Holland’s solo debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks Holland’s fourth solo outing as the fan-favorite superhero. The new movie also brings back Zendaya and Jacob Batalon as M.J. and Ned, with Jon Bernthal and Sadie Sink joining the cast for the first time. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has no doubt been aided at the box office by a terrific reception; it holds a “Certified Fresh” 89% critics’ score and a “Verified Hot” 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “Spinning a web of spectacular set pieces together with mature emotional stakes and Tom Holland’s soulful performance, Brand New Day is a promising reset that portends Spidey will remain sticky on the big screen for years to come.”
Tom Hardy’s Superhero Spin-Off Has Been Overtaken by ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’
With around $940 million worldwide in its opening frame, the movie passed the $1 billion mark on its first Monday in theaters. In doing so, it has overtaken the entire $856 million global haul of Sony’s Spider-Man spin-off film Venom, starring Tom Hardy. The films technically exist in the same timeline, with Hardy even making a cameo appearance at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021. He returned to star as Venom in two sequels — Venom: Let There Be Carnage and Venom: The Last Dance — which each made around $500 million worldwide. Directed by Ruben Fleischer, the first Venom movie was especially huge in China, where it made around $270 million. The movie received negative reviews and is now sitting at a 31% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is in theaters now. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
