Biles explained that during her final months in Chicago, “three men in masks came to our house and stole my Porsche GTS.” She then teased the full backstory, saying, “If you guys want to know, I’ll do a storytime on that,” before joking, “I feel like I need a reality show. The things that happen to me are absolute insanity.”

The unexpected confession instantly hooked fans. One follower joked, “My Toyota Corolla was also stolen from my house too, so we are practically the same [laughing emoji].”

Others were already demanding the promised storytime, with one writing, “I would definitely watch a reality show of your life,” another saying, “Definitely want to hear the story of the car theft,” and a Chicago viewer adding, “As a fellow Chicagoan, I am embarrassed, sorry that happened.

The alleged break-in did more than leave Simone Biles without her Porsche. Even after the car was recovered, the experience influenced how she and Jonathan Owens approached security at home, adding another surprising detail to an already wild story.

The Olympic champion revealed that the alleged robbery inspired one unexpected change at home. “That is one of the reasons we got our Doberman,” Biles explained, while one fan clearly understood the emotional side of losing a car, writing, “If someone stole my car, I don’t even want it back; it is such a gross and personal violation.”

Although Biles revealed in her TikTok caption that the original Porsche had actually been recovered, she ultimately chose to purchase another car: a Porsche Cayenne GTS.

It is a model she had wanted for some time but had hesitated to buy, admitting, “I’ve always wanted this car, but I didn’t necessarily want to pay the price,” before saying the moment she heard it start, she was sold.

GFR reported that Miley Cyrus was robbed three times between 2013 and 2014, with thieves eventually taking her Maserati Quattroporte along with other belongings.

Rod Stewart has had two cars stolen over the years, including a 1977 Porsche Turbo-Carrera and a Dodge Viper, while Queen Latifah’s Mercedes-Benz was taken during a 1995 carjacking.

Usher also found himself dealing with a car-related theft after around $1 million worth of cash and jewelry was reportedly stolen from his vehicle in 2010.

With stories involving Miley Cyrus, Rod Stewart, Queen Latifah and Usher all appearing on the same list, Biles has landed in some pretty unexpected company following her own alleged Porsche theft.

Long before the stolen Porsche drama, Biles was already turning car upgrades into their own little events. In August 2024, the Olympic champion showed off a sparkling white Mercedes-Benz G 550 after replacing her older black G-Wagon.

As reported by The Blast, Biles recalled, “And then I saw that he was in the Houston area, so we started chatting a little bit, and then we went to hang out a week or two later.”

The relationship quickly became serious, with the couple going public on Instagram, getting engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2022, and eventually tying the knot in a Houston courthouse ceremony before celebrating with a larger wedding in Cabo San Lucas.

Kirk’s (Paul Wesley) time as the Captain of the USS Enterprise​​​​​​, teeing up the endgame of Strange New Worlds, which is expected to bring the timeline full circle to The Original Series. With gorgeous costumes and a wild plot twist, this episode takes audiences on a wild ride that reaffirms the show’s throughline of found family fighting for a hope-filled future.

Ahead of the finale, I sat down with Strange New Worlds showrunners Henry Alonso Myers and Akiva Goldsman to discuss the episode, while also looking forward to the future of Star Trek. We also discussed what audiences can expect from the show’s fifth and final season, which is expected to air sometime in 2027, following the second and final season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Big changes are coming for Strange New Worlds as Myers and Goldsman confirmed they’ll be abandoning the show’s genre-hopping premise — to an extent — as they use every minute of their final six episodes to give this crew of the USS Enterprise a fitting send-off. Myers and Goldsman also briefly teased further exploration of the relationship between Kirk and La’an (Christina Chong), what to expect from the new Bones (Thomas Jane) and Sulu (Kai Murakami), and how they’ll bring the series to a satisfying end. COLLIDER: Much of this episode is anchored in Uhura and Scotty’s relationship, which is, I think, mentioned offhandedly in the movies, but I’m curious, what made you want to explore that dynamic for this finale?

HENRY ALONSO MYERS: Well, part of that was that there’s a lot of stuff that they kind of got into later, I think, in the films that imply that there’s a whole world of emotion that is not really explored throughout the series. It’s one of the fun things that we’ve gotten to do on this show was give those characters some things to play that they didn’t get to do in the original show, but that have been implied.

They had interesting chemistry. We wanted to find, you know, we were interested in, the romance between them, and also it’s an important episode where she’s exploring, trying to make a, you know, like a time travel adjustment, and these things are much better if you have some emotional core that you’re trying to save at the heart of it. And I think that because we felt that was there in the movies, it was something we could dig in and reveal more specifically.

When I spoke with Paul a few weeks ago, he mentioned that there might be a little less genre hopping in Season 5, as you guys only have six episodes to really land the ship. Can you speak to whether Season 5 will play out, episodically still, or will it be a little more serialized?

AKIVA GOLDSMAN: It’s definitely still an episodic show, but to some people’s delight and others’ dismay, there will be essentially no genre hopping. Which isn’t to say the tones of the episodes aren’t different, but they are fundamentally a suite of episodes that are about our goodbyes to those characters.

Speaking of those goodbyes, there are several Strange New Worlds characters that we don’t ever meet in The Original Series. Can you tease anything about bringing their stories in particular to a satisfying end?

GOLDSMAN: We will bring those stories to a satisfying end. [Laughs]

That is great to hear. We do get a little mention of Bones in this episode, and we know you guys have already cast Bones and Sulu. I’m curious what made Thomas Jane and Kai Murakami the right guys to fill those two roles?

MYERS: Well, this feels like something we should talk about next season maybe, but I will say simply, they were both really great and they’re fun to work with and smart, and got to bring something that really, genuinely felt like those characters to us. But, if you really want to see that yourself, you should watch next season.

We do get also a little glimpse of a couple characters that are only seen in The Animated Series in this episode, which I thought was a really cool little Easter egg. How close is this alternate future that we see in this episode to where we end up in Season 5?

GOLDSMAN: So I don’t think this is an alternate future. I think this is an interstitial future. I think there is a…so, this exists in continuity as well. How close it is…

MYERS: Well, Scotty doesn’t die. That’s the only part that would change.

GOLDSMAN: Correct. So…close.

MYERS: Right.

‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Never Wants to Stop Surprising You

Jumping back a little bit into this episode. I love that this sort of carries on the tradition of Starfleet delivering space babies. What made you decide to make that part of this finale’s central mystery?

MYERS: I mean, usually what you do in a writers’ room, I will say globally, is you keep playing with something until it surprises you. And I think that we kept taking it to what felt like an ordinary place. And that’s never a great way to have an act out. What you want is an act out that twists the story in some way and makes it, like, genuinely, “What? Oh, my God!” Like, you want to give something to the audience that you look for in a story. And we were genuinely surprised and thought it was not where people expected to go with each turn in this episode. And that’s really what we were going for. I mean, that’s just a global writing thing that we stick to in the room.

I love any time that this sort of trope comes up in Star Trek. I think it’s so much fun. When Uhura mentions La’an in this future, Kirk has a pretty strong but sort of unexplained reaction. I’m curious, is this a hint about where her story goes in Season 5, or is it simply a reference to their star-crossed nature?

GOLDSMAN: You will have to watch Season 5.

I will be there with bells on.

MYERS: I promise you, there will be surprises and emotion to come.

I really, really enjoyed their alternate universe-ish episode in Season 2, so I am excited for more of that relationship — if it’s there!

GOLDSMAN: It very well may be, my friend.

‘Strange New Worlds’ Showrunners Only Have One Regret Ahead of the Final Season

I know that with Star Trek, the possibilities are truly endless. And I know that with you guys having this shorter run of episodes in Season 5, you may not have gotten to check off everything on your Star Trek bucket list. So I’m curious if there’s anything else that you would like to see come to fruition in a future comic series, or another series down the line?

GOLDSMAN: I mean, I think we’re going to have, you know, we, as Henry says, we leave behind a bunch of ideas every year. I think I regret that we were unable to get Shatner on this show. That would have been wonderful. But otherwise, for me, I feel pretty fulfilled.

MYERS: I think if you get to do five seasons of a show and you get to come up with the actual ending, that’s a win. You know, I’ve worked on a lot of shows, and sometimes you get to say goodbye, and sometimes it just ends. This is the best of all those worlds.

With Star Trek sort of coming to the end of an era, on television for the time being. I am curious if you guys have any advice that you would give to Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, who are sort of working on bringing back the franchise to the big screen?

GOLDSMAN: I wouldn’t dare. I know them. You know well enough to know that they love Star Trek and that is the only prerequisite in my book. And then the imagination is the limit.

MYERS: I mean, they’re great writers. I just hope that they get to have as much fun as we did, if not more. Because I feel like that’s usually the sign that things are going well. You get to enjoy it.

The late Dolly Parton’s younger sister Freida Parton has broken her silence on family “feud” rumors following the legendary singer’s death.

“Hi I’ll say this and this only: there is no feud within our family. No one among the Parton/Owens family is fighting over Dolly’s estate,” Freida, 69, clarified via Instagram on Wednesday, September 23.

Her statement comes on the heels of Dolly’s nephew Bryan Seaver being fired as head of security for her properties last week. The controversial decision to remove Seaver was reportedly made by the executors of Dolly’s estate.

“We all love Bryan, just as we love each other. I love you all,” Freida clarified in Wednesday’s Instagram post.

A spokesperson for Seaver’s security company SAPS said over the weekend that they were “dismayed by the unexpected and, so far, unexplained actions” by those in charge of Dolly’s estate.

Seaver and his team were reportedly served notice on Wednesday, September 16, that their services were no longer required at Dolly’s Nashville home, museum and warehouse. They were immediately replaced by an entirely new security staff.

“We remain unshakably resolved to fulfill her final directive to protect her family, and we refuse to be intimidated by those whose actions we believe are being taken in bad faith and with the intent to profit from the life of someone who willingly gave so much,” Seaver’s spokesperson told TMZ.

Court documents obtained by Us on Wednesday shed new light on an apparent dispute between Seaver and Dolly’s executors in the days before her death at age 80 on August 25.

She’s Alive, LLC — the organization Dolly appointed to look after her business interests following her death — filed a motion earlier this week, asking for a restraining order against Seaver to be immediately granted.

Parton’s manager Danny Nozell and fellow executors alleged in their court filing that Seaver threatened to use his “self-proclaimed military-contractor experience, access to weapons, and capacity for violence to extort [Parton’s estate] into giving into his demands for money.”

Per She’s Alive, LLC, Seaver allegedly sent a string of threatening text messages where he described himself as “literally an international arms dealer and mercenary.”

“Her money better be bigger than I can make elsewhere or I’m going to f*** everyone. I am about to become the hand of retribution for my entire family,” Seaver allegedly wrote in one message.

Another purported text message allegedly read, “I’m going to set up a podcast dedicated to ruining Dolly’s brand partnership and telling the violations these people have done on us.”

“I am [seeking] vengeance for my people for the next 50 years. I have no debt. I only own swords and guns,” Seaver allegedly wrote to Nozell. “All I have is animosity and memory. But I’m going to spend the next times I have on earth ratf***ing anyone that has ever betrayed my family… All I do is warfare… Everyone needs to be worried about what I might do.”

Seaver responded in a statement to TMZ in which he denied he’d ever directly threatened Nozell or anyone from She’s Alive, LLC.

“I am a career soldier and military contractor and do conduct arms deals for foreign governments. I am a security professional and I am a killer,” Seaver told the outlet. “However, nothing in this lawsuit were threats and most of the comments I stand by.”

“I was talking frankly in a private way with Danny, who I thought was my friend and he fancies himself a gangster,” Seaver went on to say. “A lot of these messages are two guys having rage-talk and crying on the phone together while we were grieving.”

As for the alleged “ratf***ing” threat,” Seaver said, “I was talking about people that have done bad to Dolly in business — a specific company that scared her and intimidated her. Those comments were about specific, horrible business partners that have done wrong to her and I stand by that.”

The dispute is particularly shocking since Seaver was chosen by Dolly on behalf of her family to announce her death via an Instagram video last month. (Seaver’s mother is Dolly’s sister Cassie Parton.)

“As her head of security for more than two decades — a role my father Larry held before me — I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now,” Seaver said in a video statement posted on Parton’s official Instagram account on August 25. “It is an honor — an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by [late husband] Carl, her parents and countless others who have watched over her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens.”

Us has reached out to Seaver’s company for comment.

Bryan Seaver is in a legal battle against She’s Alive LLC (SAL), the entity created to protect and manage Dolly Parton’s affairs and legacy, overseen by her longtime manager Danny Nozell.

On September 16, Seaver received a letter terminating him as head of security, a position he took over from his father and held for more than 20 years. In a statement, Seaver said he was “dismayed” by the decision, adding that no explanation was given.

“I was fired. After the estate negotiated with me and my company for services in perpetuity and agreed to that service provision from my company. A week later they fired me for these contrived ‘threats’,” Seaver said.

SAL then filed a lawsuit against him, alleging he made extortion demands, threatened Nozell and estate employees, and vowed to “destroy” Parton’s brand.

In court documents, the entity alleged Seaver sent messages calling himself a “killer” and wrote, “Everyone needs to be worried about what I might do,” as reported by The Blast.

Bryan Seaver Says Dolly Parton Called Him ‘Her Killer’

Seaver denied the accusations and added context to the situation. He told TMZ that the messages between him and Nozell cited in the court documents were private “rage talk” between them that were misconstrued.

As for the “killer” comment, Seaver said Parton referred to him by that nickname, per ABC News.

“Dolly called me her killer. It was a joke we used around her camp. I was her ‘baby boy ninja’ and Danny Nozell took that text out of context to somehow imagine that I was threatening him. He’s always called me The Killer,” Seaver explained.

He also rejected the claim that he threatened Parton estate employees, saying that he considers them his friends and co-workers.

Dolly Parton’s Sister Shuts Down Rumors Amid The Controversy

Amid the controversy between Seaver and Parton’s estate, there have been rumors circulating that a feud erupted among the country icon’s family members after her passing.

Parton’s younger sister, Freida, took to social media and shut down the rumors. “There is no feud within our family. No one among the Parton/Owens family is fighting over Dolly’s estate,” she wrote. In addition, she also addressed Seaver’s ongoing dispute, saying that he is loved by everyone in the family.

The Court Granted A Restraining Order Against Bryan Seaver

Following his firing, Seaver, along with his team from his private security firm Squadrant Augmented Protection Services, was dismissed from Parton’s property. The replacement team immediately assumed their security duties.

In addition to the lawsuit, SAL also filed a temporary restraining order against Seaver, which the court granted.

According to The Tennessean, Seaver was ordered to keep a distance of 1,000 feet from any SAL employee and people who have business with the entity. He is also banned from communicating with them and interfering in business relationships.

A hearing is scheduled on October 7.

The accusations against Seaver made headlines not even a month after Parton’s death, which left her fans stunned, particularly given his close relationship with the singer. Parton had personally chosen Seaver to announce her death to the public, a decision that reflected the trust she placed in her nephew.

The dispute has grown more complicated, with both sides offering different accounts as the legal battle continues.

Amid the controversy, there seems to be a shared sentiment that the ongoing dispute is not the kind of situation the country legend would have wanted associated with her legacy.

Jenna Johnson is shedding some light on why her Dancing With the Stars partner Harry Shum Jr. punctuated their “Viral Hits Night” routine with a dramatic scream.

“The scream that was heard around the world,” pro dancer Jenna 32, joked via Instagram on Wednesday, September 23. “The scream! The controversy!”

The duo may have made the biggest impression on viewers during “Viral Hits Night” on Tuesday, September 22, with their Viennese waltz set to “Iris” by Goo Goo Dolls. In a climactic moment, Harry, 44, broke away from the dance to scream directly into the camera before Jenna pulled him back into their routine.

“Let me tell you why [that happened],” Jenna teased. “Obviously there were still 14 couples in the competition so our [intro video] packages were so short. The pro dancer told Harry that in moments of high anxiety that she often “just wants to scream.”

In the rehearsal room, Jenna asked Harry if he’d be willing to “go crazy” with how they expressed anxiety throughout their Viennese waltz.

“He said, ‘Yeah, we should always go crazy,’” the pro recalled. “I just want to say, I’m so grateful for a partner who is down to do crazy things with me and that supports my ideas, my art and my creativity. [He] is willing to go there — the full visceral experience of his full-body scream was just, honestly, I think my favorite part.”

She added, “You either loved it or you hated it. Totally fine. But that was our art. That was our expression. Art is so subjective. It’s personal and it’s totally fine if you didn’t resonate with that. I hope that people who felt that emotion did [resonate with the scream].”

Jenna acknowledged that their video package “didn’t really explain the emotion” behind the scream because there simply was not enough time.

The couple’s Viennese waltz was a modest hit with judges Derek Hough, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli, who scored the routine 18 out of 30 total points.

Derek, 41, called the dance “beautiful” while Bruno, 70, felt it was a “great performance.” Carrie, 58, was less impressed, receiving boos from the studio audience for her harsher critique.

Fans of Ali Hazelwood’s book The Love Hypothesis might be surprised by the amount of changes — and omissions — in the new Lili Reinhart movie.

Prime Video’s new rom-com follows Ph.D. candidate Olive (Reinhart) and professor Adam a.k.a (Tom Bateman) as they pretend to be in a relationship before real feelings begin to get in the way. Hazelwood’s novel was originally a fan fiction story about Rey and Kylo Ren from the Star Wars franchise. (Bateman’s wife, Daisy Ridley, happened to play Rey opposite Adam Driver as Kylo.)

Ahead of the movie’s debut, Reinhart and Bateman hinted that some shakeups were made in order to bring Hazelwood’s vision to life.

“That’s what the script was able to feel like for me — while still keeping the integrity of both characters and doing the book justice,” Reinhart explained at Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest in June 2026. “Obviously, the importance of the book and the source material [is something we thought about].”

She continued: “We wanted to totally respect that and I think our writer Sarah [Rothschild] absolutely did. The heart of the book is in the film.”

Bateman agreed about the onscreen differences, adding, “Every single person involved with this had such a deep love for this book and for doing it justice for everyone that loves it, for the amazing characters and the world. The intention was always, ‘We want to make this the best it can be.’ And who better to tell it than a group of people who love it so much?”

Despite the changes that were made for the big screen, the actor insisted the source material “was always front and center” for the cast and crew. “We weren’t trying to get away from it in any way,” he said. “We were just trying to do our very, very best to give everyone what they want out of this story.”

Adam’s Crush on Olive

As book fans know, Adam and Olive originally met prior to the events in the book. Olive, however, was struggling with expired contacts and didn’t realize who she was speaking to. Adam knew — and went on to develop a crush.

The movie does include the flashback, but Adam’s yearning for Olive — which explains why he agreed to fake date her in the book — isn’t included on screen.

Holden’s Absence

The biggest loss — especially to readers — was the character of Holden Rodriguez, Adam’s best friend and the love interest of Olive’s friend Malcolm. Holden was instrumental in bringing Adam and Olive together in Hazelwood’s novel and was often the comical relief to even out Adam’s more grumpy demeanor.

Chapter 16

The Love Hypothesis fans were on the edge of their seats waiting to see how the movie adapted the famous Chapter 16 — a.k.a Adam and Olive having sex for the first time. The movie version was significantly shorter (it technically spanned across three chapters in the book) and left out some memorable moments, such as Adam’s “you can take it” line.

Changing the Breakup

Olive is the one who ended her relationship with Adam in the book after being sexually harassed by his friend Tom. Adam later found out what happened and they got back together, which the movie chose to change.

Instead, Adam ended his arrangement with Olive on screen as a way to help her focus on her career.

The movie also addressed the issue with Tom (Arty Froushan) by having Olive’s friend Anh (Rachel Marsh) be the one to fill Adam in. This was a major departure from the book, which devoted an entire scene to Olive playing audio of Tom making an advance on her, leading to a heated confrontation between the two men.

Anh’s Role in the Story

The fake dating plot initially as a way for Olive to convince Anh that she was no longer interested in ex Jeremy (Nicholas Duvernay). The movie turned that into Olive previously having a crush on Jeremy, which made Anh refuse to explore her own feelings for him.

Anh also wasn’t aware that Olive and Adam weren’t really dating on the page, but she figured out that it was fake in the movie.

The Ending

The final scene of Hazelwood’s book has Olive and Adam recreating their first kiss one year later. The movie features a two-year time jump that confirmed that Olive and Anh became Stanford professors with Adam.

Love should be simple, but Miyuki Shirogane (Makoto Furukawa) and Kaguya Shinomiya (Aoi Koga) are determined to make it anything but in Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. As the top students at the elite Shuchiin Academy, the student council president and vice president are practically perfect for each other. There’s just one problem: neither is willing to confess first. Instead of admitting how they feel, they turn romance into an epic battlefield.

There’s petty, and then there’s Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. The anime takes the “will they, won’t they” scenario to an almost ridiculous extreme. What keeps it fresh is the borderline psychological warfare Miyuki and Kaguya wage against each other, from switching each other’s coffee to decaf to having one of them enter the student council covered in fake blood and wielding a knife. Yet for all their nonsensical pranks, they genuinely understand the pressures and insecurities the other carries.

‘Haikyu!!’ (2014–2020)

Shoyo Hinata (Ayumu Murase) may be short, but that has never stopped him from dreaming big. Haikyu!! follows Shoyo as he sets his sights on becoming a great athlete. His first step toward that dream, however, ends in disaster when he suffers a humiliating defeat against Tobio Kageyama (Kaito Ishikawa), a volleyball prodigy who seems to have everything Hinata lacks. Rintarou Okabe (Mamoru Miyano) from Steins;Gate has plenty of eccentricities, but calling himself a “mad scientist” might be his most harmless one. While experimenting with a modified microwave, Okabe and his friends accidentally discover they can send messages back in time. His silly, goofy experiment quickly becomes a nightmare when their meddling with history attracts the attention of SERN, a shadowy organization researching time travel. Worse, every change they make can reshape the present.

Steins;Gate treats time-traveling with the utmost seriousness, drawing on hard sci-fi concepts like the butterfly effect, black hole theory, and the many-worlds interpretation to make its time travel feel surprisingly grounded. Send one message into the past, and the future could look completely different. Every time Okabe tries to fix one problem, he risks creating another, trapping him in a cycle of self-torture as he struggles to accept that he can’t solve everything. And that’s precisely the point of the anime.

Being one of the most powerful psychics alive is hardly useful in Mob Psycho 100. All Shigeo “Mob” Kageyama (Shigeo Kageyama) wants is to fit in. The quiet middle schooler spends his days trying to get through school, friendships, and the pressures of growing up, all while secretly using his supernatural abilities to deal with troublesome spirits and other psychics. But Mob’s biggest worry isn’t his enemies; it’s his growing emotions that fuel the extremity of his powers.

Mob Psycho 100 reverses the predictable “pursuit of power” plot by giving its protagonist more power than he could ever want. Mob isn’t interested in becoming the strongest person around; he simply wants to become a decent—and, if he’s lucky, likable—human being. New audiences may be hooked by the anime’s bizarre supernatural encounters, but they’ll stay for Mob’s coming-of-age story as he gradually learns that true strength isn’t measured by psychic abilities.

Hunter x Hunter innocently begins with a classic adventure story about a boy chasing after an absent father. Twelve-year-old Gon Freecss (Megumi Han) leaves Whale Island after discovering that his father, Ging (Rikiya Koyama), is not only alive but one of the world’s most accomplished Hunters. Determined to follow in his footsteps, Gon enters the notoriously perilous Hunter Examination, setting off on a journey that will take him far beyond the simple goal of finding his father.

There’s a reason why Michael B. Jordan is a Hunter x Hunter fan. Rather than following the familiar shonen formula of an inexperienced underdog chasing an impossible goal, the anime puts its heroes through genuinely psychologically grueling ordeals. Much of this comes down to its Nen power system, which rewards characters for understanding their abilities and exploiting their opponents’ weaknesses instead of simply overpowering them. As a result, even the most lopsided fights can become unpredictable.

‘Attack on Titan’ (2013–2023)

In Attack on Titan, humanity has spent generations hiding behind massive walls, terrified of the Titans that roam outside. After the Colossal Titan destroys Wall Maria and Eren Yeager (Yuki Kaji) witnesses his mother’s death, he dedicates his life to destroying every Titan. Joined by childhood friends Mikasa (Yui Ishikawa) and Armin (Marina Inoue), Eren enters the Survey Corps, where their fight for humanity’s survival takes them far beyond what they ever imagined.

When it was released, Attack on Titan caught the attention of both anime fans and newcomers to the genre with the sheer gruesomeness of its violence. While the brutality can be horrendous to watch, it also leaves viewers wondering just how far the series is willing to go. Combined with its roughly $150,000-per-episode budget, the graphic violence contributes to the show’s unmistakable visual quality, complementing an unforgiving story in which one character’s pursuit of justice gradually takes a much darker turn.

Throughout history, one of the genres that has offered the largest number of tremendous masterpieces has been the psychological thriller genre. These stories, all about suspense driven by the internal emotional and psychological states of its characters, have unsurprisingly given us several of the greatest films the big screen has ever seen. From the birth of cinema as a storytelling medium until the present, this is a genre that has remained one of audiences’ favorites around the world.

From foundational classics like the French masterpiece The Wages of Fear to cornerstones of 21st-century cinema like Mulholland Drive, there may have been many an exceptional psychological thriller over the years, but only a handful of them can be said to be truly perfect. Indeed, there are eight particular movies that have gone down in history not only as some of the genre’s greatest outings, but as some of the most flawless motion pictures the world has ever been treated to.

‘The Wages of Fear’ (1953)

French cinema has given the world several of the greatest films of all time, including a few incredible psychological thrillers. Before auteurs like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut rebelled against the classical school of French filmmaking and thus gave birth to the French New Wave, came the many old-school masterpieces whose foundations they wanted to subvert. The peak of pre-New Wave French cinema is arguably Henri-Georges Clouzot‘s The Wages of Fear, one of the best movie classics from 1953.

Exceptional though its 1977 Hollywood remake Sorcerer may be, Wages of Fear is a masterpiece without equal. By tying the physical elements of its high-octane, airtight plot to existential dread, the fragility of the human psyche, and pure human desperation, Clouzot crafted a psychological thriller that was far ahead of its time. Watching Wages of Fear today, it still feels about as modern as any psychological thriller tour-de-force being made nowadays.

‘Woman in the Dunes’ (1964)

One of the most effective and historied forms of psychological thrillers is the erotic thriller, and as far as those go, it doesn’t get much better than Hiroshi Teshigahara‘s Woman in the Dunes. This cornerstone of 20th-century Japanese cinema was based on screenwriter Kōbō Abe‘s own novel of the same name, and after its remarkable critical and commercial success internationally back in 1964, it has stood the test of time as one of the greatest films ever to have come out of the Japanese New Wave movement.

Though Woman in the Dunes may be called one of the most amazing yet forgotten Japanese movies in history, that only means that it’s one of the most underrated dramas and psychological thrillers out there. It’s a sweaty, sandy, psychologically engrossing erotic thriller that’s both fascinatingly existential and visually gorgeous. Watching it, there is virtually nothing at all to complain about to this day.

‘Cure’ (1997)

Directed by Kiyoshi Kurosawa (no relation to Akira Kurosawa), Cure is still widely remembered as one of the greatest international horror movies perhaps not just of the ’90s, but of all time. This psychological horror thriller is one of those thrillers that are an absolute masterclass in suspense; a perfectly directed, perfectly written, and perfectly performed piece of J-Horror that has since been praised as one of the most influential horror gems ever to have come out of the Japanese scene.

People who prefer more lighthearted horror movies or psychological thrillers are definitely better off looking elsewhere, because Cure is purely cruel and gleefully so. It’s the type of horror film that operates not through jump scares or overt supernatural threats, but through the pure psychological horror of the very real evil that has plagued humanity since times immemorial. It’s atmospheric, it’s potently slow-burning, and it’s a must-see for fans of any of its genres.

‘Vertigo’ (1958)

Alfred Hitchcock is still known as the Master of Suspense, and that’s for good reason. He laid many of the foundations that the modern thriller genre still continues to build on top of to this day, and continues to be one of the most massively influential filmmakers in history. As such, it’s no shocker that he directed many of the greatest thrillers in film history, including a few exceptional psychological thrillers—the most perfect of which is arguably Vertigo.

Everyone may point to a different Hitchcock outing as his most flawless psychological thriller, and that’s okay; but throughout history, Vertigo has remained one of the most universally acclaimed movies of Hollywood’s Golden Age. It’s one of the most genius mystery movies of all time, a visually striking and brilliantly meta study on themes of romantic delusion and psychological obsession. No self-proclaimed fan of the genre can be a true fan if they haven’t watched Vertigo at least once.

‘Memento’ (2000)

Today, he’s widely seen as one of the undisputed kings of the box office and one of the leading voices in modern Hollywood filmmaking, but back in the day, Christopher Nolan was an up-and-coming indie filmmaker like any other. It was the massive success of his sophomore directorial effort, Memento, that earned him international acclaim and put his name on the map. To this day, many would confidently say that it’s still his magnum opus.

Brilliantly structured in reverse chronological order in a way that invites multiple re-watches, but is never hard enough to follow to make the film frustrating, Memento is easily one of the best mystery movies released since 2000. Anchored by Guy Pearce‘s exceptionally underrated lead performance and what’s far and away the boldest, most daring script in Nolan’s whole filmography, it’s one of the most timeless psychological thrillers of the 2000s.

‘Mulholland Drive’ (2001)

Throughout the latter decades of the 20th century, David Lynch kept further cementing himself not just as one of the most fascinating arthouse filmmakers of his generation, but as one of the most important and influential surrealist auteurs in the history of cinema. However, not even his biggest fans could have predicted the level of quality of what would soon come to be hailed as the crown jewel of his filmography: Mulholland Drive, one of the most beloved thrillers of the 21st century.

An absolute head-scratcher through and through, Mulholland Drive is perhaps not the most accessible introduction to surrealist cinema for those unfamiliar; but for those who enjoy mind-bending extravaganzas like this, it should prove to be a hell of an unforgettable trip. Simultaneously a powerful critique of the dark side of the Hollywood Dream and a deeply humanist study of identity, duality, and sexuality, it’s a must-see gem for those who prefer their psychological thrillers thought-provoking.

‘The Silence of the Lambs’ (1991)

Jonathan Demme‘s The Silence of the Lambs is a psychological thriller so terrifyingly bleak and violent that it’s typically also labeled as psychological horror; and with that, it’s the only horror film ever to have won Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Based on the book by Thomas Harris, it introduced the big screen to Anthony Hopkins‘ Hannibal Lecter, far and away one of the best movie villains of all time.

On top of Hopkins and Jodie Foster‘s career-defining and Oscar-winning performances, The Silence of the Lambs continues to shine over three decades after its release as one of the scariest, most suspenseful, and most impeccably made thrillers in film history. Rarely have cat-and-mouse games been this psychologically intense on the big screen, and rarely will a psychological thriller ever reach this level of incredible quality.

‘Se7en’ (1995)

David Fincher has repeatedly established himself as one of the greatest thriller filmmakers working today, one of the directors most deserving of carrying Hitchcock’s torch as today’s Masters of Suspense. However, after the failure that was his directing debut, Alien 3, he desperately needed a hit to show the world what he was capable of. In came his sophomore effort, Se7en, still remembered as one of the most suspenseful mystery movies of all time.

Never has a darker, crueler, or more nihilistic Hollywood film ever made over $300 million dollars at the box office internationally. It’s precisely that bleak tone that makes Se7en so special, though, serving as the scaffolding for its hard-hitting sense of oppressive moral decay and existential helplessness. It’s the closest that a psychological thriller has ever come to true flawlessness, with some of the greatest directing, best performances, tightest writing, and most impeccably production values that the genre has ever seen or will ever see.
