How TV's Raunchiest Adult Animated Show Destroyed Itself

By TeeJay Small
| Published

If you’re a fan of adult animated shows, you’ve almost certainly spent your fair share of hours cackling at FX’s Archer. The series, which premiered in 2009, centers on a team of bumbling spies, who take on missions in between drunken benders, one-night stands, and more quick-witted jokes than your brain can process on a single viewing. At one point in time, I would have considered Archer to be one of the best shows on television. Unfortunately, after airing for 14 seasons, the show lost a lot of magic, and ultimately fizzled out with an underwhelming finale.

Many fans have different opinions on when Archer peaked. Some say that the show fell off in season five, after pivoting from a fairly straightforward raunchy spy show into a vaguely defined crime adventure. Others stopped watching in season eight, when the title character is shot and sent into a multi-season coma. Personally, I find it difficult to pinpoint when the show started going downhill, though a lot of the blame rests on real world events outside of the narrative.

Archer’s Isis Problem

The first four seasons of Archer maintained a thin veneer of continuity, with a few running gags in place to reward binge viewing and eagle-eyed fans. For the most part though, the series was episodic in nature, allowing you to throw any episode on the TV while channel surfing with reckless abandon. Right when the series began to reach mainstream success, the writers had to make a hard pivot. This is because the spy agency in the show is called Isis, which you may recognize as a real-life global terrorism outfit. ISIS wasn’t exactly making headlines in 2009, but as Archer carried on, the group became one of the most talked-about insurgencies, which makes for some really awkward dialogue on a rewatch.

In season five, Archer drops the pretext of the Isis spy agency, and the main cast of characters take up work as mercenaries for the CIA. In doing so, the show takes a hard pivot into serialization, meaning you’d basically have to watch every episode in sequential order to know what’s going on. The jokes still work, the characters are still as chaotic as ever, but some of the magic of Archer’s hyper fast-paced writing is lost in the shuffle. Fast forward to the conclusion of Archer season seven, when Sterling Archer is shot and left for dead, and you have the dreaded coma seasons to look forward to.

Explaining The Coma Seasons

I can’t exactly prove this, but I’m given to think that series creator and showrunner Adam Reed wanted to quit the show and branch out into other stories around season seven of Archer. But, since the series had become such a cash cow for the network, FX insisted on renewing it, even if it meant delivering less cohesive material. The coma seasons aren’t unwatchable- they’d even be considered great in comparison to a lesser show- but they’re distinctly not the Archer that fans know and love. Each of the three coma seasons completely reframe the core cast, as they take on new roles as Neo-noir detectives, island refugees, and even space marines.

My theory about Adam Reed seems to prove true when you consider that he ultimately left the show after a very sloppy season ten. In doing so, Reed enabled new management to wake Sterling Archer up out of his coma, and attempt to return to the status quo. Even though I’m not a fan of the coma seasons, this is where the show goes completely off the rails for me. With the loss of Reed’s acerbic wit and the realization that three seasons of material effectively disappeared into thin air, season 11 feels like a cheap imitation of early Archer.

The Death Of Jessica Walter

Even if you’re an Archer super-fan, you’d have to admit that the death blow for the series came in 2021, when Jessica Walter passed away. Walter voiced Sterling’s mother Malory, and offered a stand-out performance that left the show hollow in her absence. The writers managed to use some archival voice lines to give her character a graceful exit in the season 12 finale, though FX made the baffling decision to prop up the corpse of this series for two more seasons afterward.

Seasons 13 and 14 of Archer have moments of joy, and a few solid laughs, but the show never manages to recover its spark once the Archer family matriarch is out of the picture. FX unceremoniously cancelled the series in 2023, and delivered a three-part special finale in order to placate long-time viewers.

What Might Have Been

The writers did their best to tie up all the loose ends, and I still enjoyed powering through to the very end of the show. Still, once the credits rolled, I couldn’t help but wonder what the television landscape would have looked like if Adam Reed had just taken his talents to a new show, rather than fundamentally changing so much of what made Archer great.

All 14 seasons of Archer are currently streaming on Hulu. If you’ve never seen the show, it’s still well worth the watch, just as long as you manage your expectations going in.

I don’t say this lightly, but Amazon’s Big Spring Sale might be one of the best chances to stock up on chic, wearable fashion without overpaying. As someone who shops for a living, I’m extremely picky about the clothes I choose, which is why I look long and hard before deciding what’s actually worth buying. With the sale running now through Tuesday, March 31, I did a deep dive and found a handful of deals I didn’t hesitate to add to my cart.

This time around, I dug through dozens of promotions to pull together 13 shopping writer-approved deals I’d genuinely recommend to a friend. Think polished tops, chic accessories and loungewear picks that actually work for real life. Plus, a few brand-name buys in the sale include Levi’s 501 cropped jeans, Kendra Scott’s pendant necklace and more — all of which feel elevated and wearable. The best part is that these deals start at just $18.

2. Pretty Polka Dots: I can picture myself poolside in this strapless one-piece with a sarong and slides. The ruching and tummy-control design will help keep everything smooth, and the polka dots are just chic — was $35, now $24!

5. Sophisticated Stripes: This striped racerback tank has built-in padding and a high neckline, so I can skip the extra layer underneath. The ribbed cotton feels airy and breathable for spring errand runs — was $39, now $19!

7. Elegant Earrings: When I can’t decide between gold and silver jewelry, these double-knot earrings from Heaven Mayhem eliminate that debate entirely. The mixed metal earrings feature both gold and silver plating that work together beautifully — was $110, now $93!

8. Everyday Staple: I’d throw this cashmere blend V-neck on with jeans for coffee or tuck it into a skirt for date night. The lace hem detail makes it look more expensive, and even subtly alluring — was $30, now $25!

45+ Years Later, One of the Greatest War Movies Ever Is Being Rewritten as a Streaming Hit on April 1

Cinema has never been afraid to tackle the biggest and most contentious events in the world. This is no better illustrated than in the war genre, and there is perhaps no conflict more associated with cinema than Vietnam. From a superb Tom Cruise performance in Born on the Fourth of July and the six Academy Award wins of Forrest Gump to a 31-year-old Willem Dafoe‘s Platoon and the star-studded The Deer Hunter, some of the greatest movies of all time are set against the volatile backdrop of the Vietnam War.

The very best Vietnam War movie, and possibly the greatest war movie of all time, is Apocalypse Now, the genius Francis Ford Coppola effort loosely inspired by a 1899 novella. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, including nods in the Best Picture and Best Director categories, the film walked away from the 52nd ceremony with two Golden Statues, winning for Best Cinematography and Best Sound. However, Apocalypse Now‘s greatest achievement was at the Cannes Film Festival, where it became Coppola’s second movie to win the coveted Palme d’Or, five years after he triumphed for The Conversation.

Adored by critics, Apocalypse Now boasts a “certified fresh” 91% score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences awarding a 94% rating. The critics’ consensus on the site reads, “A voyage to hell where the journey is more satisfying than the destination, Francis Ford Coppola’s haunting, hallucinatory Vietnam War epic is cinema at its most audacious and visionary.” In his 4/4 review at the time, the acclaimed critic Roger Ebert wrote:

“Remember the weird beauty of the massed helicopters lifting over the trees in the long shot, and the insane power of Wagner’s music, played loudly during the attack, and you feel what Coppola was getting at: Those moments as common in life as art, when the whole huge grand mystery of the world, so terrible, so beautiful, seems to hang in the balance.”

The Star Trek Episode That Only Exists Because Of A Sex Joke

The Star Trek Episode That Only Exists Because Of A Sex Joke

By Chris Snellgrove
| Published

Star Trek has, historically, had a complicated relationship with sex. On the one hand, Captain Kirk famously earned a reputation for sleeping with any woman (alien or otherwise) who gave him a second glance, and The Original Series set pop culture on fire with a sexy, dancing Orion slave girl. On the other hand, the sequel show, The Next Generation, was comparatively chaste: sex and even romance were relatively sparse, and Patrick Stewart went out of his way to beg writers to get Captain Picard active more often.

The pendulum had swung back the other way by the time Star Trek: Voyager came out. This is a show where revved-up Vulcans push mind melds, Captain Janeway bones a hologram, and Tom Paris has such loud relations with B’elanna Torres that the entire deck can hear it. Oh, and they tamed a female Borg and then made her wear a catsuit so tight even Kirk would blush. But that’s not the worst of it: you see, an entire Voyager episode was created because of a sex joke!

Let’s Talk About Sex, Baby!

“PLEASE stop calling it your ‘leola root!’”

The episode in question is “Elogium,” which has an A plot about tiny spacefaring organisms that glom onto the hull and start draining power from the ship’s systems. That’s bad enough, but their presence induces weird changes in Kes. Eventually, the Doctor discovers that these space critters have prematurely activated Kes’s mating cycle, something that wasn’t supposed to happen for another three or four years. Now, as Captain Janeway explores how to save her ship, Neelix and Kes must explore whether they are ready to have children.

During the Golden Age of Star Trek, freelancers and other fans were always encouraged to pitch stories and even send unsolicited scripts. The episode was originally pitched by both Steve J. Kay and Jimmy Diggs, the latter of whom was a Vietnam War veteran. The A Plot of “Elogium” was inspired by Diggs’ time in the Navy, when he was cleaning his vessel on a starless night. The darkness was only lit up by the ship’s own lights, which ended up attracting thousands of fish. The sight of these creatures really moved Diggs, who imagined the glittering fish as moving stars, illuminating his journey through the galaxy.

Captain, We’ve Lost Our Sex Appeal

Who said Vulcans don’t have a sense of humor?

Obviously, those fish inspired the space critters that are attracted to Voyager’s hull in “Elogium.” But the producers thought the episode still needed a B Plot, which is why Jeri Taylor pitched the idea of these interstellar creatures triggering Kes’s mating cycle. Diggs later confessed to The Official Star Trek: Voyager Magazine that Taylor’s idea caused him to make a spur-of-the-moment joke while pitching. “I said, when the crew discovers a way to rid themselves of the creatures and the beings eventually drift away from the vessel, Tuvok can say, ‘Captain, I believe that we’ve lost our sex appeal.”

According to Diggs, his joke amused Brannon Braga, who then said the “magic word” that every writer longs to hear: “sold.” Afterward, Diggs was understandably proud of his success, saying, “Star Trek bought my very first story because of that one, funny, tag line.” First is the keyword here, as Diggs went on to successfully pitch more Star Trek episodes than any other freelance writer in franchise history. This included “Doctor Bashir, I Presume,” which revealed that the titular physician had received Khan-like genetic augmentation. Diggs also pitched Voyager’s “The Omega Directive,” which would, decades later, inspire the galaxy-threatening plot of Starfleet Academy’s first season.

Home, sweat home.

While Jimmy Diggs never became a major Hollywood writer outside of this franchise, he has the honor of pitching some of Star Trek’s coolest stories. He also had the dubious honor of cementing Voyager’s reputation as Trek’s horniest show. Sure, future shows would try to entice viewers with everything from Klingon boobies to erotic underwear massages. But only Voyager can boast that it created an entire episode thanks to someone’s well-timed sex joke.

Woman Takes Colleague To Court Over “Auntie” Joke

Published

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

Roommates, sometimes “harmless jokes” in the workplace are anything but—and Ilda Esteves just proved it. What started as a colleague repeatedly calling her “auntie” reportedly turned into a full-blown employment tribunal showdown. And, the verdict is giving everyone the side-eye.

RELATED: Wait WHAT?! California Man Convicted After Licking Woman’s Toes During Home Invasion (VIDEO)

Esteves Said “I Ain’t No Auntie.”

According to reports, Ilda Esteves, 61, brought a claim against her NHS employer after nurse Charles Oppong kept referring to her as “auntie,” despite her repeated requests to be called by her name. Oppong tried to defend himself by saying it was a term of respect in Ghanaian culture. However, the tribunal wasn’t buying it.

Judge Slams Oppong, Awards Harassment Compensation

Judge George Alliott reportedly described Oppong’s evidence as “poor,” noting that he was vague, evasive, and reluctant to even acknowledge a colleague named George who was involved in the incidents. The judge concluded that Oppong’s repeated comments, made in offices, corridors, and during handovers, were likely an offensive attempt at humor that created an uncomfortable environment for Esteves.

Furthermore, Esteves had already put Oppong on notice in a September 2023 email, writing that he repeatedly called her “auntie” despite being asked to use her name, even adding, “You want to be young then!” He also made comments about her lipstick and again suggested she’d be a “good match” for a colleague named George.

Esteves Refuses To Be Disrespected At Work

In the end, Esteves was reportedly awarded £1,425(which equated to approx. $1,890) in compensation for harassment based on her age and sex. The tribunal acknowledged that “auntie” can be a respectful term in Ghanaian culture. However, they emphasized that using it against her wishes was offensive. Her other claims, including discrimination and victimization, were dismissed.

Angela Simmons Reflects On Previous Date With Cam Newton

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

Roommates, y’all know how sometimes a casual convo turns into a “wait…WHAT?” moment real quick? Well, that’s exactly what happened when Angela Simmons and Cam Newton linked up for a recent sit-down. What started off as a smooth exchange took a slight turn when the topic of their past came up. And let’s just say, the details had us raising eyebrows!

RELATED: Angela Simmons Has Social Media Poppin’ OFF After Dropping Music Video For Her New Single ‘Run To’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Angela Said One Date With Cam Was Enough For Her

On a recent episode of ‘Funky Friday with Cam Newton,’ Angela pulled up as a guest. And while the vibes were cool overall, things got a little spicy when their history entered the chat. Angela revealed that although people may have thought they dated, that wasn’t exactly the case. According to her, their connection came through Corey Gamble—apparently, the same Corey who’s been rocking with Kris Jenner for years. After being connected, the two eventually linked up. But when Cam asked to “settle something,” he straight-up said, “Did we ever actually date?” Angela made it clear: “I wouldn’t say the word date… we went out on a date.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. Cam chimed in to clear up the timeline, saying this all went down back in 2011 in New York. But according to Angela, that one date was more than enough. She admitted Cam gave her the “ick” after cracking jokes, laughing at them himself, and, in her words, showing a little too much interest in the ride home. Sis also pointed out that he kept patting himself on the back throughout the night —which ultimately sealed the deal for her. Angela wrapped it up by saying that whatever they had ended right there. While she clarified they never actually dated, she said they “met” and have only seen each other in passing ever since. Whew—talk about a one-and-done situation!

Fans Say That Date Was Never It

Fans quickly caught wind of the moment and flooded the ‘Funky Friday’ Instagram comments, going all the way in. Many were convinced Cam Newton definitely remembers that date but was playing it off, while others said Angela dodged a bullet. Meanwhile, some chimed in with a more neutral take, suggesting the date was probably just dry.

Cam hopped in himself, writing, “-1ØVẼ🤟🏾”

This Instagram user, @diego_mode_anthony, said, “See fellas, even an MVP can have an off night… KEEP GROWING and KEEP SHOOTING 💪🏽💪🏽”

And, Instagram user @vintage.1124 added, “He remembers. Trust me!

Likewise, Instagram user @sincerely_chaeb wrote, “He went from ‘I don’t remember any of that’ to ‘That was the night before I was drafted’ rq 😂🤣”

While Instagram user @extraordinarily_flawed claimed, “🤔 💭 maybe the date was boring and he had to entertain himself 🙄 😆 anything if possible… jmo

Lastly, Instagram user @lovemshayzel joked, “That means that was one of the worse dates she’s had😂😂😂”

Cam Newton Sparks Debate Again With His Dating Takes

Whew, Roommates—Cam Newton stays sparking conversation when it comes to his dating philosophy, and this time was no different. As previously reported, Cam got real candid about how he views a woman’s “value.” He seemingly believes it can decrease with the more kids she has—whether it’s with one man or multiple partners. He even revealed he’s had this convo with one of his children’s mothers. Cam explained that while some men might shy away from stepping into a situation with multiple kids, he sees himself as the type to embrace it all.

Still, his comments had folks raising eyebrows as he broke down how other men might not be willing to take on that responsibility. Even though he made it clear that doesn’t mean she won’t find love—in his eyes, not everyone is built for that role.

Donald Trump Invites Summit Crowd To “Talk Sex” With Him

Rihanna Seemingly Addresses Baby Rumors, Talks "Little Pouch"

Leave it to Donald Trump to turn a serious investor forum into…well, something a little more NSFW. While most leaders stick to talking numbers, policy, or foreign affairs, Trump apparently had other topics on his mind—and wasn’t shy about saying it out loud.

RELATED: Donald Trump Addresses Major Military Operation As US And Israel Attack Iran, At Least 50 Dead (VIDEO)

Trump Brings Up Sex While Addressing Global Issues In Miami

During a speech at the Future Investment Initiative in Miami on Friday night, Trump invited the audience to ask him anything—sex included. “You can talk sex,” he said, prompting scattered giggles from investors, before adding, “You can do whatever the h*ll you want. I’m here for you.” The remarks came after a keynote largely focused on tensions with Iran, including his claim that the country had been “obliterated” and that Iranian leaders needed to reopen what he jokingly dubbed the “Strait of Trump.

The comment wasn’t his only eyebrow-raiser: the forum also took place just hours before reports of injuries at a U.S. military base in Saudi Arabia following an attack linked to the region’s ongoing conflict. Classic Trump—mixing global drama, military updates, and a side of cheeky humor in one speech.

X Users Are Having A Field Day Over Trump’s Remarks

X went absolutely wild after Trump’s Miami remarks, and folks were NOT holding back. Some dragged him for bringing up sex instead of sticking to politics, while others straight-up called it embarrassing. Meanwhile, plenty of users were just trying to confirm if he really said it—or if it was too outrageous to be true.

Now, Y’all Know This Ain’t His First Controversial Answer

Now y’all know this ain’t the first time Donald Trump’s answers have left folks side-eyeing him. As previously reported, during a phone call with Time’s Eric Cortellessa, Trump admitted there’s reason to worry about potential attacks—then added, “I guess… Some people will die. When you go to war, some people will die.” While he stressed that the U.S. is constantly planning for these scenarios, his casual delivery had plenty of viewers questioning if he really meant what he said, especially as Iranian officials signaled their focus on U.S. bases in the region following recent counterattacks.

3 Best Peacock Movies to Watch This Weekend (March 28-29)

The final weekend of March has arrived, and Peacock has a genuine blockbuster from 2025 to close out the month on a high note.

Wicked: For Good may not have gotten much love at the Oscars, but it was another blockbuster hit, and it’s likely to reign supreme in streaming as well.

That’s just one of Watch With Us‘ picks for the three best Peacock movies to binge-watch this weekend.

Our other selections include an underrated Western and an all-time great action comedy.

‘Wicked For Good’ (2025)

Wicked: For Good wraps up the adaptation of the hit Broadway musical that turned The Wizard of Oz upside down. Following the events of the first Wicked, Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo) has been branded as the Wicked Witch of the East by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh). Elphaba’s best friend, Glinda (Ariana Grande), knows that the charges are a lie, but still sides with the Wizard to maintain her newfound position and power.

Regardless, the bond between Elphaba and Glinda still exists, even though it’s about to be tested by their mutual love for the same man, Fiyero Tigelaar (Jonathan Bailey). As the timeline of the film catches up with The Wizard of Oz, Elphaba is beset on all sides, while a newcomer to Oz, Dorthy Gale (Bethany Weaver), may succeed at killing the so-called Wicked Witch, where all of the Wizard’s minions failed.

‘News of the World’ (2020)

Jason Bourne filmmaker Paul Greengrass took a step outside of the action genre when he cowrote and directed Paulette Jiles‘ Western novel, News of the World. Tom Hanks stars as Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd, a former Confederate officer who now makes his dimes by traveling from town to town and reading the news for people. It’s a solitary life until he meets a young girl named Johanna (Helena Zengel).

Johanna was kidnapped and raised by the Kiowa tribe, and now only speaks the tribe’s language. Although Johanna has few, if any, memories of her life before the Kiowa, Jefferson is charged with the responsibility of escorting the girl to her only living relatives hundreds of miles away. It’s a dangerous journey for one man, much less a man and a child. In order to survive, Jefferson and Johanna will have to learn to trust each other.

News of the World is streaming on Peacock.

‘Beverly Hills Cop’ (1984)

Have you ever seen Eddie Murphy at his peak? If not, then check out Beverly Hills Cop, the film that truly made Murphy a movie star. This film set the tone for action comedies over four decades ago, and very few films have lived up to the high standards that it set. Murphy leads the cast as Detective Axel Foley, a one-man wrecking crew in Detroit’s police department. But when Axel’s friend, Mikey Tandino (James Russo), is murdered, he’s forced to take justice into his own hands.

The trail of Mikey’s killers leads Axel to Beverly Hills, where he quickly runs afoul of the local police. Detective Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) and Sergeant John Taggart (John Ashton) have their hands full trying to keep Axel contained and out of trouble. They don’t know what real trouble is, but Axel’s about to give them a real education.

Beverly Hills Cop is streaming on Peacock.

Young Sheldon’s Iain Armitage Addresses Georgie and Mandy Cameo

Published

Young Sheldon‘s Iain Armitage made a rare comment about why there’s no rush to have him make an appearance on Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

“Honestly, it would be so fun to be on that show. I’m a huge fan [of the show and] of Montana Jordan and Emily Osment. They are so talented — everybody that’s currently on that show is so great,” Armitage, 17, exclusively told Us Weekly. “I watch the show all the time and my whole family loves it. They’re all doing such a great job as a cast and as a show.”

Despite tuning in each week, Armitage broke down his hesitation about joining — yet.

“I believe when you have a cast that great — and when you’ve already cemented a really great core cast — diluting it or adding other people doesn’t mess it up. But I wouldn’t want to barge in on what they got going on,” he noted. “It’s really great, so I would be honored to be part of it.”

He continued: “There’s no current plan in the works for it but, you know, if maybe a couple seasons down the line that happens … It’d be really exciting and fun. Now that’s one of those shows that I get to sit back and be a fan of. I don’t even have to be a part of it. I just get to nerd out and love it.”

Armitage rose to stardom playing Sheldon on the hit CBS series, which served as a prequel to The Big Bang Theory. Following Jim Parson‘s character, Young Sheldon focused on Sheldon’s life as a child prodigy growing up in Texas. Viewers met Sheldon’s brother, Georgie (Jordan), which paved the way for his love story with Mandy (Osment) to inspire another spinoff, Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage.

“I’m lucky in a few ways. Because I started doing this when I was so young, I have a lot of people that will come to me and tell me, ‘You look so different.’ It’s kind of interesting to think that if I start another project and do something completely different, it’s a nice opportunity to differentiate myself in some way,” Armitage explained. “But that’s not even really my goal. I’m really proud of the work I did on Young Sheldon. I loved it. It was a super fun seven years. I am not running from it in the slightest. I would love to appear on Georgie and Mandy but for now just the fact that I can switch up and do something totally different is awesome and really fun.”

Armitage has still found a way to remain at CBS by taking on other opportunities, like an upcoming guest star role on Ghosts.

“I’m looking forward to whatever happens next and at not trying to force anything. I am enjoying the ride and it’s really fun,” he added. “I also do like the fact that if ever want to, there’s a home for a character that I love. I’ve got options.”

The actor joked about his big dream of having a “monopoly” over his favorite CBS shows. “I need to get on Tracker and I need to get on Survivor. I need to be kidnapped really terribly and have Colter Shaw rescue me,” he quipped to Us. “I need to go on the island [on Survivor] at some point. I’d love to make a little appearance on every CBS show. That’d be fun to jump around.”

Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage airs on CBS Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET and episodes are currently streaming on Paramount+.
