Nicolas Cage Expected to Return for National Treasure 3
Nicolas Cage is expected to reprise his beloved role of rogue historian Benjamin Gates in another installment of National Treasure.
Director Jon Turteltaub confirmed on Friday, August 21, that National Treasure 3 is moving forward, telling the “National Treasure Hunt” podcast at a live event that “it’s happening.”
“I have not said anything before this, but you deserve to have the scoop,” he said, per The Philadelphia Inquirer.
Turteltaub explained that the audience was “the first people I have said this out loud to” in public. The director, however, shared that there could be hurdles the crew has to face before filming.
“It’s finally real. Now, it’s Hollywood real, meaning things could happen,” he said. “Nic gets hit by a bus, there’s no National Treasure 3. If I get hit by a bus, there’s probably a National Treasure 3. Welcome to Hollywood.”
Turteltaub claimed that an already-written screenplay has been approved by him and Disney, noting that “to whatever extent we can, everyone’s back.”
National Treasure follows treasure hunter and cryptographer Benjamin (Cage), who uncovers a plot to steal the Declaration of Independence — but no one at the FBI believed him. Benjamin then decided to protect the document by stealing it.
In 2007, Cage returned as Benjamin alongside Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha, Jon Voight and Harvey Keitel. Cage explained at the time that he decided to pursue the sequel because he felt it met his standard of being “at least as good” as the initial film.
“I wanted to make sure that we could go in a direction that would raise the stakes, and also hopefully be more interesting,” Cage said of the sequel during a 2007 press conference. “They said, ‘We have to ratchet it up from stealing the Declaration of Independence, so we thought you should kidnap the president of the United States.’ … I got nervous. Then, I started thinking about it, and I started laughing, and I realized that that was the joy of it — that it was funny and it was absurd.”
After the sequel’s release, Disney+ debuted a spinoff series titled National Treasure: Edge of History in 2022. The show centered around a new set of characters and was led by Jess Valenzuela (Lisette Olivera). Two years later, Cage shut down rumors that National Treasure 3 would be happening.
“No, there is no National Treasure 3,” Cage said in a 2024 interview with Screen Rant. “Here we go! See, you’re the one that brings these things up and they go out and they eclipse everything else. No, there is no National Treasure 3. If you want to find treasure, don’t look at Disney, OK? It’s not there.”

Disney+’s 10/10 Sci-Fi Crime Thriller Officially Pulls 1 Billion Views a Year After Ending
2026 has been the textbook definition of a roller-coaster year for Star Wars fans, who have had exceptional highs like Maul — Shadow Lord but also painful lows like The Mandalorian and Grogu. Sam Witwer reprises his role in the Star Wars Disney Plus show, which was renewed for Season 2 before a single episode of Season 1 hit streaming. No word yet on when the show will return, but it’s expected to be sometime in 2027. The Mandalorian and Grogu wrapped up its theatrical run after setting an unwanted record as the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie in history, but the film has since become a hit on VOD in the last month. It’s due to arrive on Disney Plus early in September, joining the first three seasons of its predecessor, The Mandalorian.
2025 brought on some great Star Wars projects for long-time fans of the franchise, but few had the same cultural impact as Andor. The first season of Andor dropped all the way back at the end of 2022, and after a three-year hiatus, it finally returned with its second and final season last year. The prequel series began years before the events of Rogue One and the final episodes led directly into the opening minutes of the film, serving as the perfect connective tissue. During the first half of 2026, a full year after Andor went off the air, the show still drew nearly 1 billion minutes watched, 918.1 million to be exact, making it one of the most-watched shows of the first six months of the year on Disney Plus. The series earned even more views than The Punisher: One Last Kill, starring Jon Bernthal.
When Does the Next Star Wars Movie Come Out?
After waiting seven years after The Rise of Skywalker for a new Star Wars movie, fans won’t have to wait nearly as long for a new feature film from the franchise. The next Star Wars movie, Starfighter, is coming to theaters on May 28, 2027, almost exactly one year after the premiere of The Mandalorian and Grogu. Ryan Gosling (Project Hail Mary) leads the Star Wars film under director Shawn Levy, who also recently directed Deadpool & Wolverine. Levy and Gosling are reuniting barely one year after the premiere of Starfighter for the MCU’s new Ghost Rider movie, which rides into theaters on July 28, 2028.

In the realm of fantasy, magic systems are typically sorted into two main categories: soft and hard magic systems. A soft magic system is generally pretty loose about its rules, with the magic rarely having clear limitations. This type of magic system typically doesn’t have a lengthy explanation about how or why it works — it just does. On the flipside, hard magic systems are very structured and rife with rules. There are clear limits, and some even dive into the physics behind them.
These magic systems can be found across many forms of media, from books to movies, and even to television. Lots of fantasy TV shows have adopted some pretty complicated magic systems. This is especially true with shows that are based on novels, as the novels are able to detail their systems and relay the information in a way that the screen simply cannot. Though that hasn’t stopped them from trying. These are the best fantasy TV shows with hard magic systems, which are almost always complicated and difficult to grasp for new fans.

‘Shadow and Bone’ (2021–2023)
Shadow and Bone is based on a novel series by Leigh Bardugo, who wrote an extensive literary universe known as the Grishaverse. The name “Grisha” is the name of the magic users in this universe. Grishas are gifted with magic from birth, meaning not everybody can learn how to harness the power of magic. Even then, Grishas are pretty limited in what they can and can’t do. They are divided into several clans, which are in turn divided into sub-clans based on their particular abilities or talents.
First, there are the Corporalki, who can manipulate the human body. These are divided into Heartrenders, who control the heart and organs, Healers, and Tailors, who alter DNA and physical appearance. Then there are the Etherealki, who command natural elements. These are separated into Squallers (wind), Inferni (fire), and Tidemakers (water), with some rarer individuals able to manipulate light or shadow. Lastly, there are the Materialki, the Fabrikators, who control physical objects. These Grishas consist of the Durasts, who manipulate wood, glass, and other materials, and the Alkemi, who control chemicals and poisons. However, each Grisha can only manipulate their environment and cannot conjure things out of thin air; they can typically only use their abilities when their element is present nearby. The magic is treated like a science, and even dives into the physics of things a little bit. It gets even more complicated than that though, which is surprising for a YA series.

‘The Magicians’ (2015–2020)
The Magicians might be a low fantasy TV series, but it still does a good job of presenting an intricate and detailed system of magic. Originally based on the novels by Lev Grossman, the story concerns a man who enrolls at a university to study magic, only to discover that the world from his favorite childhood storybook is real, and more dangerous than he anticipated. This fantasy series is all about magic, so it’s important to make the magic system feel rigid, structured, and well-planned.
Spells have to be cast in a very exact way — one small slip-up, and it won’t work in the way the caster intends it to. First, the caster must perform a highly precise finger gesture paired with an incantation, usually in a dead language like Old Slavonic or Latin. This won’t work every single time, though. Each gesture and incantation must be adjusted for the variables in the environment, including weather, time of day, geographical position, and more. This means every magician is practically an advanced scientist, able to perform complex magical calculations of sorts. It’s not ideal, but with enough practice, any magician can become an expert at their craft. Though it works slightly differently in the show than it does in the books, it’s still pretty complicated.
Fullmetal Alchemist is a Japanese anime based on a manga series by Hiromu Arakawa. The show is a bit of a blend of fantasy and steampunk, which has helped it appeal to a broader audience both domestically and internationally. Though short-lived, the show did take a pretty long look at how magic actually works in its weird and wonderful world. As the title suggests, it is heavily related to the concept of alchemy, an ancient practice that served as a precursor to modern chemistry.
As such, most of the magic in the show is about the use of metals or chemicals. First, an alchemist must know the theory of what they’re doing so that they can understand what they’re doing and not cause a catastrophic explosion. Once this is done, the alchemist uses their gift to break down the material at a molecular level before reconstructing it into an entirely new material, object, or shape. Like most hard magic systems, though, there are limits. It closely follows the real laws of physics, such as the law of equivalent exchange. This means you cannot create something from nothing. It also follows conservation of mass, meaning matter cannot be truly destroyed. For any act of transmutation, it is crucial for the alchemist to transform something into an object that is closely related. This means you cannot turn a rock into fire. You would be better off turning it into a brick, since they have more in common. Should any of these rules be broken, the universe forces a “rebound,” giving the alchemist a heavy physical or psychological burden in return. This is just how it works at base level — it actually goes even deeper than that.

‘The Wheel of Time’ (2021–2025)
The magic system in The Wheel of Time is meticulously detailed in the original novel series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. It is rigidly structured and has clear and distinct rules. First, there is the matter of inherent power levels. This is a 72-point scale, with every magic user, called a Channeler, falling somewhere on that scale. Women can only access 66 of those points, meaning men are more powerful. However, women are also more likely to be able to Channel, whereas men are doomed to lose their minds eventually due to the Dark One tainting saidin, the male half of the One Power. The female half is known as saidar.
One’s power level determines the efficiency with which they can channel. Once the One Power is accessed, a Channeler must weave together magical threads of fire, earth, air, water, and spirit. These can be used as is, or combined to produce different effects, such as healing, coercion, or lightning. This process comes at a cost, however. Each time a Channeler uses their power, it drains a bit of their physical energy. This means excessive magic use can quickly exhaust a Channeler, and in some cases, even kill them. Thus, it is not something to be used lightly. The magic system is complicated enough as it is, but it’s made even more intricate by the fact that female Channelers, the Aes Sedai, divide themselves into seven different Ajahs, each focusing on different areas of strength in the power. For example, the Green Ajah is very competent with combative magic like lightning bolts and fireballs, whereas the Yellow Ajah leans more towards healing weaves. The show never got much of a chance to dive as deep into things as the books do — especially due to The Wheel of Time‘s unfortunate cancelation — but it’s still a lot to take in.

‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ (2022–Present)
The Legend of Vox Machina comes from pretty humble beginnings. It initially began on a podcast called Critical Role, which is about custom campaigns for the popular tabletop role-playing game, Dungeons & Dragons. The podcast absolutely blew up, sparking a deal with Amazon Prime Video, which became the TV show that fans know and love today. What’s really cool is that the original actors from the podcast actually voice their in-game characters on the show, making it a treat for the fans who have been there since day one.
As for the magic system, because it’s based on Dungeons & Dragons, it uses the same system of magic that the tabletop RPG does. Every spell cast requires three specific elements: an incantation, a gesture, and a catalyst. Typically, the catalyst is a physical item or a consumable item used as a fuel source. This sounds simple at first, but it goes deeper than that. Mages also have to consistently level up their spells, which scale separately from their character. They also take up spell slots, meaning a mage must choose their arsenal of magic carefully. This magic system is actually fairly complicated, which fits considering its origins. Though fans of the original game or of the show will know it like the back of their hands, it can be a lot to digest for newcomers.

Nicolas Cage is back on the fierce mission for a hunt once again!
“National Treasure” is now moving closer to reality after two decades of uncertainty surrounding the beloved Disney series. The development also puts Cage back in the conversation as Benjamin Franklin Gates.
The first “National Treasure” arrived in 2004 and became a major part of Nicolas Cage’s blockbuster career. Its 2007 sequel, “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” also continued with Cage.
Director Jon Turtletaub came to Philadelphia’s first National Treasure weekend with a massive surprise for loyal followers. He confirmed that “it’s happening” during a live recording of the “National Treasure Hunt” podcast. The audience reportedly erupted after the director revealed that the project had finally reached a serious stage.
Turteltaub said the movie is “Hollywood real,” while explaining that he and Disney have a script they both like. He also indicated that the cast could return “to whatever extent we can,” including Cage. That puts the actor’s possible return firmly back in the picture after years of uncertainty.
Turteltaub also joked about Hollywood’s unpredictability after calling the project “finally real.” He pointed out that unforeseen circumstances could still derail the movie before production. Still, his confirmation marks a major shift after years of speculation about another sequel.
The Political Climate Blocked The Franchise For Decades
The gap between the second and potential third films has become part of the franchise’s story. “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” arrived in 2007, leaving fans waiting for another chapter for nearly two decades. Turteltaub has now explained that the long delay wasn’t simply about putting another script together.
According to The Inquirer, the director said the political climate in the United States contributed to the delay. He recalled former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy asking him for a private screening of the original movie for Congress. Turteltaub said the film’s political themes eventually became harder to navigate as people increasingly read politics into entertainment.
He also suggested that the third movie will address that reality. Turteltaub said the filmmakers need to include the idea without alienating viewers. He did not reveal specific plot details or confirm whether Philadelphia will appear in the new film.
Nicolas Cage Once Called The Franchise ‘Profoundly Ridiculous’
In 2023, Cage revisited one of the most memorable scenes from the 2004 film during a Vanity Fair video interview. He burst out laughing while watching Benjamin Gates declare that he was going to steal the “Declaration of Independence.”
The line has remained a major part of Cage’s career and inspired countless memes and parodies. Rather than dismissing the scene, Cage explained why he believes it worked so well.
He questioned how anyone could take something “so profoundly ridiculous” and genuinely sell it to an audience. He also praised Benjamin, his character’s positivity, and the character’s sincere reverence for the historical document.
The actor said the scene became funnier because he and Justin Bartha played it completely seriously. He noted that making it intentionally funny would have turned it into a screwball comedy, which was not his approach.
Variety shared that Cage also praised director Turtletaub for filming the “Declaration” with such reverence. “I think Jon Turtletaub shot it lovingly,” Cage said.
The Actor Turned Down Massive Roles
Cage has also turned down some of Hollywood’s biggest opportunities because of his family. He reportedly rejected the role of Aragorn in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy because filming in New Zealand would have kept him away from his family for about nine months. He later made a similar decision with Neo in “The Matrix,” which was filmed in Australia.
Cage also passed on the chance to voice Shrek after Chris Farley, initially cast in the role, died before completing the project. He turned down the DreamWorks role because he did not want children to picture him as the famous green ogre. Years later, Cage appeared to reconsider, admitting in 2013, “Maybe I should have done it.”
Cage now describes his life as “extraordinarily boring” and “monastic,” saying he has become more cautious about taking risks. Much of his time centers on raising his youngest child, August Francesca, whom he welcomed with his wife, Riko Shibata, in 2022. He shared that he spent a lot of his time doomscrolling on the internet.
Nicolas Cage Finally Makes His Famous Surname Official
Cage’s Hollywood identity has always been separate from his famous family background. He is the nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola and the cousin of filmmaker Sofia Coppola and actor Jason Schwartzman. Despite building his career under the Cage name, he only recently made it his legal surname.
The Blast shared that Cage legally changed his name after decades of using it professionally. He explained that becoming “Cage” allowed him to establish his own identity rather than remain on the margins of the influential Coppola family. He said he wanted to be “the patriarch of my own little family” rather than “the clown cousin on the margins of someone else’s.”
The actor also explained where the surname came from. He was inspired by Marvel’s Luke Cage, also known as Power Man, and by composer John Cage, whom he admired. Cage kept “Nicolas” because it was the name his father gave him, despite joking about its French spelling.

Miss Universe contestant LaToya Malcolm’s family is continuing to honor her legacy after her sudden death at age 35.
Malcolm’s family held a funeral service for the late beauty queen at Central Assemblies of God church in Kingston, Jamaica, on Saturday, August 22, according to a graphic shared with People by one of her family members.
“Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure,” the flyer read.
During the service, a scholarship for Malcom was announced by Delano Seiveright, who serves as the Minister of State in the country’s Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, according to the Jamaica Observer.

Kourtney Kardashian is soaking up the final days of summer by flaunting some of her most sizzling swimwear choices.
“Big family vacation girl,” Kardashian, 47, captioned an Instagram carousel of photos from her brood’s recent getaway in the desert.
In one pic, the Lemme founder rocked a tiny silver two-piece that she accessorized with a pair of cross necklaces. Kardashian later traded the metallic bikini for a leopard-print version from sister Kylie Jenner’s Khy collection.
Kardashian enjoyed the summer getaway with her blended family. She shares sons Mason, 16, and Reign, 11, as well as daughter Penelope, 14, with ex Scott Disick, in addition to son Rocky, 2, with husband Travis Barker. Kardashian and Barker welcomed their rainbow baby, Rocky, in November 2023, after the reality TV star suffered a previous pregnancy loss. After the miscarriage, Kourtney and Barker underwent multiple rounds of now-failed IVF cycles. They ultimately conceived Rocky without medical intervention.
“The truth is, I felt like I was doing something that wasn’t right for me,” she told Vanity Fair Italia in an October 2023 profile of her IVF experience. “My intuition was telling me that it wasn’t suitable for me. I don’t even take medicine, [so] imagine that it was working against my body rather than for it.”
Later in her pregnancy, Kardashian faced an undisclosed medical complication that required emergency fetal surgery.
“Right after the surgery, I reached the point where I let myself go and I stopped worrying,” she recalled to the outlet. “Now I talk to the baby every day, have a positive mindset, keep my head straight, and say a lot of prayers. I feel really lucky and grateful. I have a lot of gratitude. Not that I didn’t have it before, but perhaps since it came easy to me, I took the pregnancy for granted.”

Summary
Set in the 1980s in Hell’s Kitchen, the MGM+ series The Westies chronicles the bloody power struggles of New York’s infamous Irish American gang. As the mafia battles law enforcement, rising enforcer Jimmy Roarke (Tom Brittney) turns on his ruthless boss and mentor Eamon Sweeney (J.K. Simmons), triggering an internal war that pits them against each other. At the same time, Jimmy shares a deep bond with Bridget Walsh (Sarah Bolger), a woman driven by revenge for her past trauma. Torn between IRA loyalty and personal motives, Bridget seizes the chance to kill her parents’ murderer, regardless of the consequences. And while she can now put that behind her, a newly unearthed secret lays the groundwork for her next move in a potential Season 2.
Collider recently got the opportunity to sit down with Bolger and chat about her complex and complicated character. During the interview, she discussed the commonalities between Bridget in The Westies and Emily in Mayans M.C., playing one of the few female characters in this very male criminal world, creating a relationship between Bridget and Jimmy that viewers can root for, what it was like to get the closure she’s been obsessed with, that Bridget will need to deal with her unresolved trauma in order to move forward, what could happen with Cahill (Allen Leech) in the future, and her desire for more seasons of the series. The Irish actress also talked about the period piece she’s currently shooting, called Fog City, and reminisced about her experience shooting the pilot for the potential Locke & Key series that was meant to air on Fox in 2011.
Sarah Bolger Hopes To Continue Bridget’s Story in Future Season of ‘The Westies’
“When Episode 8 came out, as satisfying as it is, it leaves the door open and leaves so many questions unanswered.”
COLLIDER: I have to say, I really need another season of this show because it feels like we’ve really only just gotten the introduction to all these characters.
SARAH BOLGER: Yeah, I agree. I know that eight episodes is the new model, but ultimately, that’s almost not enough episodes for me. It is just enough to set up worlds, to set up relationships, and to hint at the fractures that are to follow. I find myself yearning for more scripts all the time. I remember when Episode 8 came out, and as satisfying as it is, it leaves the door open and leaves so many questions unanswered, in the best way. So, I also yearn for more seasons. Please, God.
In both The Westies and in Mayans M.C., you play women who really had to make the best of a life they found themselves in and had to figure out how they were going to survive it. What would Bridget and Emily think of each other?
BOLGER: I think they’d tell each other to run. I think that’s what they’d do. I think they would see like for like. Even though the characters are very fundamentally different and their backgrounds are very different, I think they feel comfort in that amount of discomfort. The only commonality that I can find between the two is that they fall in love and find safety in love and then don’t need safety anywhere else. That is the thread I can see. But I think if one were to wake up the other, they’d be like, “Run! What are you doing? Run!” Emily Galindo, specifically, or Emily Thomas had a child. As much as you can fight for love and fight for romance and fight for connection, ultimately the amount of blood loss around them really started to rise. I think Brigid comes from another point of view, where she feels more comfortable in that chaos and in that feeling of living on the fringe. That wasn’t Emily’s past. But I love that question because they’re two gang shows, for want of a better term. You have to think of a character from a whole new perspective. It’s New York, it’s the ‘80s, she’s Irish. It’s just different. And yet, I love that there is a continuity to it to some degree.
You also have this knack for being one of the only women to come into a show that is very heavy with male energy. What is that like? How did you find that experience on this show?
BOLGER: Yeah. We’re depicting these gangs that are inspired by real gangs, so the truth is, in terms of the history of gangs, there are just more male-dominated gangs. Elgin James did such a good job of trying to bring in female gangs in the later seasons of Mayans. It is interesting. Myself, Jessica Frances Dukes and Hilary McCormack are in The Westies, and I think those female characters are wonderful. What’s so amazing about them is they each hold court in their own specific worlds, and they don’t feel dependent on any form of male connection for their storyline to continue. (Creators) Chris Brancato and Michael Panes not only wrote Bridget Walsh as a goddamn powerhouse, but her whole story is something that is in need. They need her, she doesn’t need them. There is something wonderful about that, and smart and that I love playing. The female characters, even though there are less, in terms of ratio, take up so much of the screen in The Westies, in a really wonderful way.
Did you have conversations with the creators about that, so that you knew she wouldn’t get lost among the other characters in the story?
BOLGER: Honestly, no. It’s really hard thing to pick up on a new show when you have one episode and the idea of the eight episodes. Whether or not they have all eight in their heads at that point, once you get to sit and chat and do the breakdown and ask the questions, that can really inspire the writing team. So, you don’t expect them to have all the answers, but they promised me, and held to their promise, that if the Westies could have had a female member, Bridget would have been leading it. She is a force in her own right but also has a past that is more checkered and more nuanced than they even had. There’s an understanding of humanity that Bridget has that I respect and I wish I had. The idea that she is very much needed was the thing they promised me, and I really, really feel that throughout the entire show.
One of the things that I find really interesting about the series is that there is no real hero conquering a villain in this story. You can really root for and against all of the characters, at different points. Even though we understand where Bridget is coming from, she still has to kill someone. How did that shape things for you? Did it feel freeing not to have to work within those typical constraints of good guys versus bad guys?
BOLGER: Absolutely. You want to root for things like relationships. When you close your eyes at night, you don’t necessarily want to remember the bodies that you’ve thrown over the side of the boat. You want to hold the person you love close and feel an ounce of safety in that tornado. What myself and Tom Brittney wanted to do was create an intensity in the relationship that people would root for, even if the people themselves are not perfect people and, in fact, far from it. I think their relationship dialog is very interesting because they have a ton of secrets, and that’s maybe their love language. I don’t advise that. Don’t do that at home. That’s not my recommendation. But that was the thing that I found great. Even though these people are polarizing, even though these people are sometimes nefarious, even though they are criminals, you can understand something where they need love, they want safety, they maybe want a family. There’s still humanity in these people. With Keenan and his son, those roles are fundamental to humanizing these people, in the best and most relatable ways.
Even Birdie doesn’t necessarily do anything that crosses a line, but she’s still using Keenan.
BOLGER: Birdie is amazing. Jessica does such an amazing job with her. In Birdie’s head, potentially everyone’s disposable. She sees herself as the puppet master. In her head, she’s playing God. That’s really interesting, and not sympathetic. The best part of the show is to have their moral ambiguity be always in question, with the integrity of the human being intact.
Bridget Is Going To Have To Deal With Her Trauma in Order To Move Forward in ‘The Westies’
“What does it look like for these characters in this crime ring to heal in violence and in chaos?”
Bridget really spends this whole season driven for some kind of justice or vengeance for her past. Because she does ultimately get a resolution for that, what’s next for her? Have you thought about how her relationship with Jimmy will change?
BOLGER: Yeah. With that resolve comes a lot of trauma that she has probably placed in the tightest little box inside of herself. I think she’s going to have to come to reason with a lot of her trauma. You can’t have characters like this weeping on a couch. There’s no time for that. There’s no time to see someone heal. So, what does it look like for these characters in this crime ring to heal in violence and in chaos? There’s going to be something very interesting about that in Season 2, and please God, let us get a Season 2. How do you fundamentally deal with PTSD and mental health in this world? I’d love to explore what that potentially could look like, and what her goals are moving forward. If that’s a big thing that’s been lifted, what does that mean for her? How does that change her fundamentally?
In the finale, Bridget finally gets that moment to take out Markham, but then she comes out of the bathroom, and we learn he recognized her and knew exactly who she was. What do you think she felt in that moment? Do you think it even occurred to her that she could find herself in that situation?
BOLGER: Yeah. With these characters, you have to have a sense of going in and knowing the outcome may be the most horrendous outcome possible. It’s going in blind and drinking the Kool-Aid of your conviction. In Episode 7, there’s that lovely scene with Bridget and Roarke that’s almost a goodbye. It’s like, “I can’t say what this is yet. I don’t know what it is. I don’t know what I’m getting myself into. But the truth is, maybe this is a suicide mission and maybe there is no coming back.” You have to go in full throttle. That’s been her life for the past decade. Even though it’s not the outcome she wished, there is a part of her that goes in knowing she could never return, and maybe part of her will never return.
We see Markham overpowering her and he clearly intends to rape her, but it cuts away and doesn’t go back until we see him dead. Did that scene always play out in the script the way it ultimately did in the show?
BOLGER: I haven’t seen the finished, completed version of Episodes 7 and 8 yet, but to my knowledge, there’s a level of ambiguity that Chris and Michael wanted to allow the audience to understand the dire situation to which she may have had to stomach the experience. Either way, it was never going to be pleasant.
How did you feel about the way it turned out, as far as not getting that moment to see her kill him?
BOLGER: The truth is that the show does a wonderful balancing act of not shoving violence down everyone’s throats, no pun intended, in every scene. The fact that we watch her leave this room, when I was given the note by our wonderful director, Adam [Kane], it was, “Every single moment that you have lived in the last 20 minutes is on your face.” That was a great gift and a compliment. Staying with the victim is almost more powerful.
You go through a lot, from being held at gunpoint to getting smacked and thrown around. When I asked the creators about it, they commended you for how willing you were to put yourself out there during all of that. What was that like to shoot? Did you have a lot of conversations about that?
BOLGER: Yeah. And Harry [Hadden-Paton] is such a wonderful actor, and he did such an amazing, villainous, Machiavellian performance of Colonel Markham. This world is brutal. In terms of being in that criminal space, you have to see what she went through. I liked being able to showcase it in the most honest way possible. And I think our creators did a wonderful job of being very present and very vocal and very understanding, and with open ears. I thought it was all handled with such care.
After killing him, Bridget goes home and tells herJimmy that she’s good when he asks if she’s okay. Is she good? Did she even really know what she was feeling at that point?
BOLGER: I wrote a little diary for Bridget. Let’s say that she wrote one every night of her life, about the nightmares she had, the things she’s seen, the things she experienced, the loss she’s had, the ghosts that haunt her. I think that night, she left the diary completely empty because she couldn’t vocalize it. It was a white flash of rage or fear, or whatever you want to call it. That night, she had no words. If we get a Season 2, seeing the reckoning of those moments of stoicism crumble will be really interesting to see because I think she does believe she’s okay. I do not think that’s true, though.
How can you be?
BOLGER: How can you be? She sees what’s happening around her. That’s a characteristic of Bridget that I wanted to make very clear. There’s a pragmatism and a compartmentalization that she has the ability to do, which is why she can shed her own skin, and why she can like go into different spaces and feel like different people and adapt to different worlds. She is somewhat chameleon-like. Even in her trauma, she can disappear from it. It will catch up with her, no doubt, but in that moment, it can disappear from her a little bit.
What Was the One Moment That Sarah Bolger Didn’t See Coming in ‘The Westies’?
“That’s the scene where I think Bridget was frozen.”
Before she kills Markham, she learns that Cahill is the one that actually sold her family out. What did you think about that? How do you think she felt about that?
BOLGER: I did not see that coming in the script. That was one, for me, where I went, “No!” Allen Leech is the best in the whole world. The idea that he’s creepy is so brilliant because he’s the kindest, funniest man in the whole world. That’s the scene where I think Bridget, who’s probably used the trigger before she’s been able to maybe even use her emotionality, in that one case, was frozen. There was no fight. There was no flight. She just couldn’t decide. Everything that she believed, everything that she understood, everything that she’s been led towards feels like a lie, and that scares her. That means she’s missed something. I think she prides herself on reading people fairly well. Even when it comes to Eamon Sweeney, she feels like she has an astute understanding. So, that scares her because that throws that into question.
Are you surprised that she didn’t just kill him in that moment?
BOLGER: But then, you’d have two killings. I almost want to torture him. That’s Sarah speaking.
I hope that’s something that does get explored more, if there’s a Season 2. It really feels like something is owed there.
BOLGER: Something is owed, for sure. Very well put.
What are you currently shooting right now?
BOLGER: I’m doing a 1930s drama called Fog City, with a wonderful director, called Dan Pritzker. I play a woman called Liza, who leaves the Dust Bowl in 1939. It’s a wonderful story. Even just being in1930s garb and playing someone from Oklahoma is a totally different thing than Bridget Walsh. It’s been a true joy. We’re in the middle of that right now, in Melbourne, Australia. I’ve been waking up at strange hours to also make sure The Westies gets all the love. It’s been a good month.
Period projects like that are so fun because it’s not just the fun of getting to wear the costumes yourself, but it’s being surrounded by everyone and everything else.
BOLGER: It’s an immersive experience. It’s really wonderful. We’re gifted to have incredible actors around us. Creating this time in history feels very poetic and very beautiful. It’s been great. I’m very, very excited for people to see it.
What is it that gets you excited about a character? Do you know instantly when it’s something you want to do?
BOLGER: Writing, in general, is always the thing that draws me in, regardless of the character I play. It’s about the world creation and stepping into something that feels insanely well-formed and executed. What I’ve been gifted with in the past is being able to work with creatives who have fantastic world-building skills. I was in an airport and I ran into Daniel Wu from Into the Badlands, and that experience, in particular, in that steampunk, futuristic, martial arts, free love, almost cowboy-esque world was amazing. I get to explore these worlds that don’t exist, and I get to live in this magic. I crave that. I crave that even more than modern work. I end up working in either historical fiction or period pieces. It ends up being what I’m more drawn to.
Sarah Bolger Is So Proud She Got To Be a Part of ‘Locke & Key,’ Even Though Her Version of the TV Series Never Got Picked Up
“That was really a wonderful experience.”
I watched the Locke & Key pilot that you did for Fox back in 2011. It’s truly one of my favorite pilots that I’ve ever watched. I loved the series that we eventually got on Netflix, but that version felt entirely different. What were you most excited about when you shot that?
BOLGER: Josh Friedman and Joe Hill. I remember the sheer magic and horror of that show, hinging on this very simple concept of loss and being without and moving on. I remember being so in on those graphic novels, to the point that I was absorbing everything I possibly could. I thought that pilot was incredible. I remember shooting in Pittsburgh in February of whatever that year was, and wishing so hard that it got picked up. I’m so glad the show did have a life in a completely different iteration, but that was really a wonderful experience. I’m so proud I got to be part of that.
As an actor, what was it like to shoot that pilot, have it be so beautifully done, and then not get to move forward with the series?
BOLGER: Mark Romanek directed that pilot, and he’s an artist. He’s a perfectionist artist who sees things that I don’t think anyone else sees. There was such beauty to that pilot. There’s a great sorrow, but things happen for a reason, and it led me to wherever it did. I will forever be grateful for the experience because you only learn. Even if they don’t continue, you only learn. There’s never regret. Never, ever, ever. It’s part of the process. And the industry has changed so much. There are less pilots being greenlit. There are more mini-series, or an eight-episode or 10-episode. When we did it, I think Locke & Key would have been 22 episodes, or maybe 15. I don’t remember the contract specifically, but that would have been a full-blown, 45-minute show.

Before the main course arrived, Rudes Dann raised a glass to L’AGENCE’s latest expansion and invited everyone around the table to introduce themselves and share what inspires them.
Fried fish and potatoes and risotto followed, before guests ended the night on a sweet note with tennis ball-shaped cakes and strawberries and cream. Talk about a grand slam!

CeeDee Lamb’s Texas home was reportedly burglarized while the Dallas Cowboys wide receiver was attending training camp ahead of the 2026-2027 NFL season.
The Fort-Worth Star Telegram reported on Saturday, August 22, that Lamb’s house had been broken into on July 30, while the athlete, 27, was at the Cowboys’ training camp in Oxnard, California.
While Lamb was not home at the time of the reported robbery, the outlet cited local police records which claimed that nearly $300,000 worth of property, including four luxury bags, were stolen during the alleged break-in.

Lamb has spent his entire NFL career with the Cowboys since he was drafted by the organization in 2020. Lamb and the Cowboys are currently making their way through their preseason schedule. (The Cowboys beat the Arizona Cardinals 34-13 in a preseason game on Saturday.)
“We’re having continued growth. Obviously, we understand we were very successful, but none of that success from last year can carry over,” Lamb told reporters at training camp earlier this month. “So, we’re just basically starting over from scratch, building that bond once once again, and I feel like just, kind of, carrying over.”
He added at the time, “There’s a lot of things that we’ve missed out on last year, and I feel like that we can definitely harp on and gradually get better overall as an offense.”
For Lamb, his goal for the season is “to stay healthy.”
“For me is all about being healthy, being available for my team because the last two years that wasn’t the case,” he said. “Just overall health, being able to lead, teach the younger guys if need be, and overall, I got to go be me. So, just going out there, make plays, help the guys and score.”
Lamb further stressed that he’s not yet concerned about whether the Cowboys can reach the playoffs or the 2027 Super Bowl.
“I love the Super Bowl talk, but it starts one day at a time, one week at a time, one game at a time,” he added. “You can set the standards high, right? But the only way that you can get up there, you got to climb the ladder. You know what I’m saying? Put one foot in front of the other and at the end of the day, let’s go work.”
