Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Model Cosplays As Ugly Misfit In Raunchy 80s Sci-Fi Adventure

By Robert Scucci
| Updated

Back in the 80s, being ugly on screen basically meant throwing a pair of glasses and some baggy clothes on a smokin’ hot babe. The most blatant case of this, at least to my knowledge, is 1988’s Alien from L.A., starring Kathy Ireland, who not only appeared in 13 consecutive Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues, but also landed on the cover three times.

In the movie, which plays like a strange combination of The Wizard of Oz and Journey to the Center of the Earth, our hero sets out to find the lost city of Atlantis, rescue her missing father, overcome her alleged homeliness, and show her surface-dwelling ex-boyfriend what he’s missing out on, all before riding off into the sunset on her new dude’s motorcycle.

Ironically, Alien from L.A., a direct-to-VHS outing, was followed by its straight-to-video sequel, Journey to the Center of the Earth (1989). After watching this one, I don’t think I’ll be watching that one. But it exists, and both titles are streaming on Tubi, so you can do whatever you want with that information.

These Glasses Are Holding Me Back!

Alien from L.A. 1988

Alien from L.A. is insulting to your intelligence in just about every way. We’re introduced to Wanda Saknussemm (Kathy Ireland), a woman who clearly hits the gym nine days a week, has long, flowing hair, and legs for days. If only it weren’t for those pesky glasses that are supposed to convince the viewer she’s a dud, as if no mortal man has ever fantasized about a sexy librarian. She also speaks in an incredibly squeaky voice that becomes a running joke.

Anyhow, her boyfriend Robbie (Don Michael Paul) dumps her for not being adventurous, whatever that means, and this sends our covert hottie on a soul-searching excursion to Zamboanga, North Africa, in search of her long-lost father, Professor Arnold Saknussemm (Richard Haines). As the legend goes, Arnold disappeared while searching for the lost city of Atlantis, claiming the city is of alien origin.

Alien from L.A. 1988

While digging through her father’s belongings, Wanda falls into a seemingly bottomless pit and eventually ends up in a strange underground society inhabited by miners who have never breached the surface. Though these inhabitants look just like humans, they refer to Wanda as an alien. Soon enough, she learns what’s truly at stake, but only after a bounty is placed on her head for invading their community.

What follows is a series of events involving a miner named Gus (William R. Moses), a shadowy government conspiracy led by General Rykov (Janie Du Plessis) tied to her imprisoned father, a steady stream of jokes about Wanda’s squeaky voice (it’s an affectation, she can stop talking like this whenever she wants), and a hunky rogue agent named Charmin’ (Thom Mathews).

Truly Terrible, But Also Kind Of Fun

After sitting through Alien from L.A., I’m still not sure what to make of it. It’s contrived, overtly campy, and the hero’s journey never fully clicks. When the film finally wraps, Robbie sees Wanda in a bikini and suddenly realizes he was dating a stone cold fox the entire time. Of course, this happens after Wanda wakes up from her “dream” and, in a clear callback to The Wizard of Oz, says as much.

If the movie has anything going for it, it’s the set design, which is actually pretty neat in that kitschy, low-budget way. Think foam rock formations with dry ice pumping behind them, along with some surprisingly fun city shots that give everything a cartoony vibe. Throw in Deep Roy’s Mambino character with the comically long eyelashes that are never explained, and you’ve got a bizarre viewing experience that won’t teach you anything new and might actually make you a little dumber in the process.

As of this writing, you can stream Alien from L.A. and its sequel, Journey to the Center of the Earth, for free on Tubi.

Trace Cyrus is calling out his sister, Brandi Cyrus, and accusing her of pulling the wool over his eyes. In his fiery social media post, Trace slammed Brandi for allegedly renting him a “mold-infested” home and refusing to return his money. In his post, Trace said he’s been weighed down by the latest family drama and promised to set firmer boundaries with those closest to him moving forward.

“Alright, story time guys. I’ve tried to be really f-cking nice,” Trace began in one of his IG videos. “So, I was renting this house from my lovely sister Brandi — happy belated birthday — a mold infested f-cking home. This is just one of the many problems since I moved into this house.”

He didn’t stop there. Trace went further, claiming that he “just got clean water f-cking recently” before claiming he’s been “sleeping on a f-cking air mattress downstairs.”

“The reason I can’t put out my f–king album or music this summer like I was planning? I gotta f–king move again. Brandi doesn’t want to refund me my money,” he continued.

Trace had even more to say in his video, hinting that he’s been harmed by members of his family for quite some time.

“Wow. How many members of my family are just gonna go completely bats–t crazy and be pieces of s–t? It just never ceases to amaze me, the way that I’m treated by my own family is absolutely f–king disgusting. F–k you!” he said in the clip.

For those who may be unfamiliar, Trace and Brandi were adopted by country superstar Billy Ray Cyrus and are the biological children of their mother, Tish Cyrus, who is his ex-wife.

Trace’s siblings are Miley Cyrus, Braison Cyrus, and Noah Cyrus, as well as Christopher Cyrus—Billy’s son from a previous relationship.

Trace returned to Instagram with another video about his sister, Brandi, urging the 39-year-old to speak with him directly about their issues.

“Brandi, don’t hit up anyone else to f-cking do your talking for you,” he said. “If you wanna talk, call my f–king phone. But I’m not playing nice anymore.”

Continuing, Trace said he didn’t care how his statements might make other people feel. “I don’t give a f–k who the f–k you are, family, friends, it doesn’t f–king matter. No one’s f–king me over anymore. Do the f–king right thing or this is about to get real entertaining. Just f–king wait, I promise,” he said.

In a separate clip, Trace said, “OK guys, I’ve chilled out a little bit. I got in the sauna, I meditated, I had to atroproject to the spiritual realm to make sure my mammy up in heaven was looking down in complete disgust at Brandi’s actions — she’s tuned in, she’s well aware, so that marks me happy.”

This isn’t the first time that the Cyrus family has been in the headlines regarding family drama.

In January 2025, Trace blasted his father with a lengthy Instagram post, calling him out over his complicated divorce from his mom, Tish, and his highly-publicized relationship with Firerose.

“Since my earliest memories all I can remember is being obsessed with you and thinking you were the coolest person ever,” he wrote, according to The Blast. “I wanted to be just like you. The day you adopted me was the happiest day of my life. Sadly the man that I wanted so desperately to be just like I barely recognize now. It seems this world has beaten you down and it’s become obvious to everyone but you.”

Months later, Miley jumped into the chat to shut down the rumors swirling that she was feuding with her mother, Tish, over her reconciliation with her father.

“I rarely comment on rumors, but my mama and I are too tight for anything to ever come between us,” she said. “She’s my best friend. Like a lot of moms, she doesn’t know how to work her phone and somehow unfollowed me-simple, coincidental, and uninteresting.”

Jennifer Lopez’s 18-Year-Old Child Unveils New Name, Pronouns

Published

Jennifer Lopez‘s 18-year-old child, Emme, has seemingly ditched their name for a new identity.

The discovery was made after a social media account that highlights college decisions made by graduating seniors at Windward School in Los Angeles addressed Emme by a brand new name and pronouns.

The shocking change comes almost a year after Jennifer Lopez and the teenager went viral for their striking resemblance in a photo.

Lopez is the mother to twin teenagers, Emme Maribel Muñiz and Maximilian David Muñiz, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Marc Anthony.

However, one of her kids stunned fans after it was quietly revealed that they had changed their identity.

Emme, who was once known as the singer’s daughter, now seemingly goes by “Oskar Muñiz,” as seen in a recent Instagram post from an account linked to their LA High School.

The account used a new name and he/him pronouns while talking about the college Emme will be attending after their graduation.

“Oskar to Sarah Lawrence! No more impromptu NYC trips because he’ll be living there! Good thing it’s only a few hours away from Stagedoor. Go gryphons!! Congrats!!” the post read.

It also featured a childhood photo of Emme smiling and linked out to their private Instagram page, which seemed to have an image of Emme on the locked profile.

Unsurprisingly, there was a mix of comments from people reacting to the discovery of Emme’s new identity.

“Oskar? I thought her name was Emme, and she’s a girl, not a boy!” one individual asked, while another said, “Wow, a little confused here? Must be a hard life.”

However, a lot of the comments were very positive and praised for their graduation milestone.

One person stated, “Congrats, Oskar! We love you,” while another wrote, “Congrats! Onward and upward!”

The graduation post was also liked by Jennifer Garner, who was previously married to Lopez’s ex-husband, Ben Affleck.

Garner shares three kids with Affleck: Violet, Finn (Seraphina), and Samuel. All three kids reportedly grew close to Lopez’s children during the singer’s short marriage to their dad.

The recent name change discovery came after Lopez made an appearance at Emme’s high school graduation, alongside her mother, Guadalupe Rodriguez, and former stepson, Samuel Affleck.

Emme’s twin brother, Max, was also at the ceremony. They were all seen smiling on the happy occasion, with Emme and Samuel, at one point, seen having a conversation, according to the photos obtained by Page Six.

Notably absent from the graduation event was Emme and Max’s father, Marc Anthony.

While it’s unclear why he was a no-show, the musician revealed back in January that he and his wife, Nadia Ferriera, were expecting their second child together, three years after welcoming a son.

Jennifer Lopez Reveals She Hasn’t Stopped ‘Crying’ Over Her Kids Leaving Home For College

During a recent appearance on the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” show, Lopez got candid about her kids leaving home and becoming an empty nester.

The actress admitted that she has been very emotional over the thought of her kids going to college, telling host Jimmy Kimmel, “Tomorrow one of them graduates [high school]” Lopez noted, before saying, “Don’t talk about it ’cause we start crying.”

After being asked if she would cry at the graduation, Lopez said, “I’ve been crying for two months.”

She then talked about being “fine” with Max and Emme attending different schools, noting she would rather be happy and go where they want to go, instead of forcing them to attend the same college.

“It’s fine. I want them to be happy, go where they want to go and do what they want to do,” the singer explained.

Jennifer Lopez And Emme Went Viral For Their Resemblance

Before Emme’s recent name change, the teenager went viral after a photo of them and Lopez hit the internet, which highlighted their resemblance.

The image was taken during the singer’s time in the Hamptons during Lopez’s summer getaway after her split from Affleck.

It featured Lopez and Emme beaming with smiles in the back seat of a convertible, with the singer’s vocal coach, Stevie Mackey, in the front seat.

In the photo, Emme went for a casual look in a blue plaid shirt and khaki shorts, while Lopez looked effortlessly chic in a crisp white button-down.

At the time, the mother-child duo was flooded with sweet comments from fans commenting on how similar they looked, with some even branding Emme a “carbon copy” of Lopez.

Remember Deon in everything that he brought with him, as a friend, as an associate, as a classmate,” Principal Gordon said during the graduation ceremony.

Taylor Swift’s Brutal Wedding Invite Snub To Karlie Kloss Revealed

Published

on

Karlie kloss at the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

The upcoming wedding of Taylor Swift is bound to be the talk of the town for many reasons, with her star-studded guest list being one of them.

The singer and her NFL star fiancé, Travis Kelce, will reportedly tie the knot in early July in New York City, surrounded by famous faces, like pop star Selena Gomez.

However, one particular person is said to have been snubbed of an invite to Taylor Swift’s wedding after their friendship fell apart due to “trust” issues.

Karlie Kloss is said to have been snubbed from Swift’s upcoming wedding to Kelce. The model and singer were once thick as thieves, making music video appearances and attending events together.

By 2017, things seemed to have cooled between them, and in 2019, it became apparent that the former friends were no longer close as Swift missed Kloss’ wedding to Joshua Kushner.

Now, sources claim Swift intentionally ended their friendship over a broken trust due to the people the model associated with.

“Taylor has meticulously gone through her wedding guest list because the people she wants at her wedding are the people she hopes will remain in her life forever,” the source told the Daily Mail, noting that the pop star “wants to be surrounded by those who can genuinely share the love and meaning of the day, especially the people who have played important roles in her life for years.”

“Over time, some of her friendships have become strained for various reasons,” they continued. “Obviously, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds will not be attending, and neither will Karlie Kloss. When it comes to Karlie, Taylor ultimately felt that the trust in the friendship had been broken.”

The Pop Star Allegedly Felt Karlie Kloss’ Intentions Were Not ‘Genuine’

Speaking more on the matter, the source claimed Swift realized over time that Kloss did not have very genuine intentions, and that the model allegedly only cared about her proximity to the singer’s fame.

“She came to believe that Karlie’s intentions were not as genuine as she once thought, and that the friendship became more about proximity to Taylor’s fame than a real bond,” the source said.

“Because of that, Taylor chose to distance herself, feeling that maintaining a friendship with someone she believed was using her no longer served her in any positive way,” they continued. “Could that ever change? Probably not.”

The insider further noted that Swift tends to give people a chance to show their real selves, and for her, everything Kloss has done in the past years has “only reinforced the decision to keep her distance rather than attempt to reconcile.”

Taylor Swift Had A Major Issue With Karlie Kloss’ Association With Scooter Braun

During Kloss’ 2019 wedding to Kushner, the couple’s second after an intimate ceremony in 2018, one major name that stood out on her guest list was her then-manager, Scooter Braun.

Swift was not in attendance, reportedly due to “work commitments.” However, there was probably more to it than met the eye, as around that period, Braun had purchased Swift’s original label, Big Machine Label Group, for $330 million.

Regarding this, the Daily Mail source noted that Kloss’ proximity to Braun became “a major issue for Taylor,” adding that in the singer’s eyes, “anyone closely aligned with Scooter is someone she simply cannot fully trust.”

“She feels very strongly about who Scooter is as a person based on her own experiences with him, and because of that, she views the loyalty others show toward him as extremely revealing,” the source continued. “To Taylor, if someone is willing to stand by Scooter at any point despite everything that has happened, it says a lot about their character and where their loyalties truly lie.”

Karlie Kloss And Taylor Swift Are ‘Still Acquaintances’

Another source who spoke with the media outlet slightly disagreed with the notion that Swift and Kloss had an issue due to her proximity to Braun.

Instead, they claimed that the model’s “political affiliation with the Kushner name did play a role in their friendship fallout.”

Kloss’ husband’s brother, Jared Kushner, is married to Ivanka Trump, the daughter of US President Donald Trump. Jared also currently serves as Special Peace Envoy for the Trump administration, and Swift is known to have had a public feud with Trump, especially ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.

While it’s unclear how much their friendship has deteriorated over politics, the insider stated that Swift and Kloss are “still acquaintances,” with the supermodel making an appearance at her Eras Tour concert in Inglewood, California, back in 2023.

Kloss also liked the singer’s post about her engagement to Kelce in August 2025, hinting that all is not lost between the former pals.

While Kloss might not make an appearance at Swift and Kelce’s upcoming wedding, her guest list will feature famous faces, whom the singer is said to be calling personally to invite them to her nuptials.

According to TMZ, Swift has taken the more direct approach of dialing up her guests, instead of sending out “save the dates,” in an attempt to keep information from leaking ahead of her big day.

While it has yet to be confirmed by the couple, top media outlets claim they will tie the knot in New York City on July 3, with a precise location still undisclosed.

10 Superhero Shows That Are Amazing From Start to Finish

Published

on

The Teen Titans standing and looking skeptical.

Superheroes have completely taken over the film and television spaces. While superhero movies may make the most money and be arguably a lot more popular, many would argue that it is on television where they really get the chance to shine. On the silver screen, audiences get to spend numerous hours with the protagonists, rather than just two and a half or three at the max.

Spending this much time with a character can help a viewer grow closer to them and become more invested in them and their story. The best way to do this in an effective manner, though, is to develop a series that is amazing—gripping, thrilling, and emotionally compelling—from the first episode, to the last. There are a lot of great superhero shows out there, but there are only a few that can really be considered amazing from top to bottom.

‘Teen Titans’ (2003–2006)

If an American-made series can take inspiration from anime and make it work, it could work very well in its favor, which is exactly what can be said about the legendary Teen Titans. Taking heavy inspiration from anime allowed creators Glen Murakami, David Slack, and Sam Register to perfect their tone-balancing, and make space for serious, mature moments, while keeping the show primarily lighthearted.

Tone balancing is really difficult, and Teen Titans is proof that, if done right, it can make every episode of a series amazing. Most of the time, it has audiences grinning and laughing as the team jokes around and kicks some serious butt, but it gets them emotionally invested when it tackles serious topics like racism, PTSD, and more. Teen Titans is a surefire masterclass in tone-blending.

‘Danny Phantom’ (2004–2007)

Young Danny Fenton (David Kaufman) was just 14 when his parents built a very strange machine— you know how it goes. The story of this young man having the power to “go ghost” is incredibly unique, which already gives Danny Phantom an edge against a lot of superheroes on TV. Unique powers and premise is one way to get audiences hooked immediately, but what’s most important, though, is making sure they stick around.

Thankfully for creator Butch Hartman, Danny Phantom does a great job at this, as well, as it is enjoyable from start to finish. This is primarily thanks to the fun nature of the show, and its slow escalation into more serialized storytelling. It starts episodic, which is fun and helps get people invested in the series, so that when storytelling moves on from episodic to serialized, viewers are already engaged in Danny, and most viewers will have decided that they’re in for the long haul with this one.

‘The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ (2010–2012)

The Avengers assemble in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

Image via Disney XD

Before the major Disney era of Marvel television shows, they had a golden age, which consisted of shows like The Spectacular Spider-Man and the ever-iconic The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. While both of these series were considered amazing as they were, it was The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes that would go on to still be considered to this very day as one of the best adaptations of the overall Marvel Comics universe as a whole.

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes does a phenomenal job balancing a large cast, giving everyone their time to shine, while still primarily keeping the overarching plot focused on the original team of Avengers that audiences grew attached to. Almost every major Marvel hero gets at least one episode featured in this show, and it allows the world to feel grand and lived in. On top of this, the large cast of characters opened up a plethora of storytelling opportunities for the show, which made for stories that were unique to this show specifically, and would and will most likely never be seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

‘Superman & Lois’ (2021–2024)

Elizabeth Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin embracing in Superman & Lois.
Elizabeth Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin embracing in Superman & Lois.

Superman & Lois is a very special show, in that it takes a character like Superman (Tyler Hoechlin)—whom people have said is hard to relate to because of how ever-powerful he is—and brings him even more down to Earth than he could have been before by making him a father and husband back in Smallville. Doing this brought a certain relatability and earnestness to the character that is a step above other iterations, leading to a phenomenal series.

Not only does every cast member on this series do a spectacular job bringing their roles to life, but it manages to cover some heartfelt topics, too. It’s things like this that make Superman & Lois worth every single episode, and amazing from its first to its last. Some even consider this to be the best adaptation of Superman in modern cinema, and they’d have every reason to. It’s an incredibly honest, true, genuine, and heartfelt iteration of the character that never stops being so.

Your Hero Has Been Identified
Your Sci-Fi Hero Is…

Your answers point to the iconic sci-fi hero who shares your instincts, your values, and your particular way of facing the impossible.

Arrakis · Dune

Paul Atreides

You carry a weight most people would crumble under — the knowledge of what you’re capable of, and the burden of what you might have to become.

  • You see further ahead than others and you plan accordingly, even when the vision frightens you.
  • You are driven by loyalty to your people and a sense of destiny you didn’t ask for but can’t escape.
  • Paul Atreides is not simply a hero — he is someone who understands the cost of power and chooses to bear it anyway.
  • That gravity, that willingness to carry what others won’t, is exactly you.

USS Enterprise · Star Trek

Captain Kirk

You lead with instinct, warmth, and an absolute refusal to accept a no-win scenario — because you’ve always believed there’s a third option nobody else has thought of yet.

  • You take the mission seriously without ever taking yourself too seriously.
  • Your crew would follow you anywhere, not because you demand it, but because you’ve earned it.
  • Kirk’s genius isn’t tactical — it’s human. He reads people, bends rules with purpose, and wills outcomes into existence through sheer conviction.
  • That combination of warmth, audacity, and relentless optimism is unmistakably yours.

The Rebellion · Star Wars

Princess Leia

You are the kind of person who holds the line when everyone else is losing faith — not because you’re fearless, but because giving up simply isn’t something you’re capable of.

  • You lead through conviction. Your voice carries because your belief is unshakeable.
  • You gave up everything ordinary the moment you chose the cause, and you’ve never looked back.
  • Leia is not a supporting character in her own story — she is the moral centre of the entire rebellion.
  • That same fierce, principled, unbreakable core is what defines you.

The Nostromo · Alien

Ellen Ripley

You are not reckless, not grandiose, and not particularly interested in being anyone’s hero — you just refuse to stop when it matters.

  • You see threats clearly, you document the truth even when no one listens, and when the time comes you handle it yourself.
  • Ripley’s heroism is earned, not performed. She doesn’t have a speech — she has a flamethrower and a plan.
  • You share her composure under the worst possible pressure, and her refusal to pretend the monster isn’t there.
  • When it counts, you don’t flinch. That’s everything.

The Wasteland · Mad Max

Max Rockatansky

You have been through fire that would break most people — and what came out the other side is something the world underestimates at its peril.

  • You don’t ask for help, don’t need validation, and don’t wait for anyone to tell you the rules no longer apply.
  • Your loyalty, when it finally arrives, is absolute — but it’s earned in silence and tested in action, not in words.
  • Max is not a nihilist. He is someone who lost everything and found, against his will, that he still has something worth protecting.
  • That bruised, stubborn, ultimately human core is exactly yours.

‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ (2018–2020)

There have been countless adaptations of the heroes in a half shell over the decades, but none quite as unique as the likes of Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Giving the Ninja Turtles cool powers, an incredibly fun story, and a super stylistic animation, well, style, to boot, this series finds itself being extremely enjoyable the entire way through.

On top of all that, though, what people really remember this series for is the quality of said animation. The fight sequences in this show are absolutely stupendous. While Nickelodeon Animation Studio worked on the pre-production of the animation, it’s Flying Bark Productions, an animation studio in Australia, who is to thank for this production quality. All of this combined makes this high-flying, ridiculously fun show something that people can enjoy from minute one to the final second.

‘Harley Quinn’ (2019–Present)

Superhero shows don’t have to just be action and high-stakes— no, Harley Quinn proves that people can shake up the genre, have fun, and make a great project while doing so. This series, starring Kaley Cuoco, Lake Bell, Alan Tudyk, and many more talented folks, is abundantly hilarious in every which way.

Everyone loves a show that can just have a good time being goofy, raunchy, and not take itself too seriously (most of the time), and those things describe the one and only Harley Quinn to a tee. Being a total spoof of the DC Comics universe, this show is a hoot and holler in every single episode, making it a joy to watch for each one. It continues to do so as it prepares for a sixth season—pending the official greenlight (hurry up on that DC and Warner Bros.)

‘Ben 10’ (2005–2008)

Someone would be pretty much living under a rock if they hadn’t heard of Ben 10 by now. Being one of the biggest non-Marvel or DC Comics superhero properties on the planet, Ben 10 is a franchise that is known by pretty much everyone. Much like Danny Phantom, the powers of the protagonist, Ben Tennyson (Tara Strong), are super special and cannot be seen pretty much anywhere else. This makes for stories that truly cannot be found outside this wonderful show.

Ben 10 isn’t just a cool concept on the surface-level, though, as the show genuinely tells some very well-told stories, which can be credited to the fact that the franchise was created by Man of Action, a group of comic book creators who know what it takes to make a good superhero show. Ben Tennyson is a flawed kid, which makes him so interesting, compelling, and, honestly, realistic. What makes Ben and his stories really special, though, is he didn’t suffer through any kind of trauma that makes him a hero or an immediate event that forces him to be one. Ben is a hero because he chooses to be a hero all on his own. It’s these traits that make Ben and his stories so awesome to watch… on top of his cool powers.

‘Batman: The Animated Series’ (1992–1995)

Batman: The Animated Series is commonly known as one of the most popular and beloved superhero shows of all time, to this very day—a whopping 34 years later. Whether it’s because it stars the fan-favorite duo Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill or because of the genuinely thought-provoking stories it tells, Batman: The Animated Series has something for everyone.

As stated, Batman: The Animated Series tells some genuinely amazing stories—some would argue they’re some of the best Batman stories out there—and that has helped so many of its episodes go down in history as some of the most memorable in superhero television. This show doesn’t pull its punches when it comes to storytelling, and that’s what makes it so special at the end of the day… but the animation and voice acting are nice bonuses.

‘The Spectacular Spider-Man’ (2008–2009)

Yes, yes, of course The Spectacular Spider-Man is here, because why wouldn’t it be? This show is consistently called one of the best adaptations of Marvel’s web-slinging Wall-Crawler, and for good reason. The flowing animation, great character work, excellent storytelling, and the prowess behind the voice work all make The Spectacular Spider-Man something truly unforgettable, so much to the point that the hashtag, “#savethespectacularspiderman” has been prominent online since it was cancelled.

The Spectacular Spider-Man has some of the best adaptations of the most iconic Spider-Man stories from the comics. In this series, the characterization of Peter Parker (Josh Keaton) and his co-stars (and villains) are the true heart of the show, and that’s what makes this project so special: the heart and soul behind it.

‘Daredevil’ (2015–2018)

It’s not often that a superhero show is so good that people will consider it genuine art on a widespread level. This is—if one looks on the superhero corner of the internet for even a second—most certainly the case with Netflix and Marvel Studios’ Daredevil. This show has a certain X Factor to it that feels like lightning in a bottle.

Daredevil, even at its lowest (second half of Season 2), is entertaining, engrossing, masterfully told, and perfectly directed the entire way through the three season series. Not to forget, Charlie Cox gives one of the best performances in superhero television, and never stops throughout the whole project. Daredevil is something unlike any other and is genuinely masterful.

The HBO War Miniseries That Set a New Streaming Standard Is Still Finding Viewers 25 Years Later

Published

on

band of brothers is still a masterpiece

There’s an almost ceaseless fascination with World War II, a time when there were clear definitions of who were the good guys and who were not, when nations put aside their differences to unite against a common enemy. It’s a period in history, on History, that Tom Hanks is currently revisiting the conflict in a 20-part documentary series, World War II with Tom Hanks. It’s also the latest in a string of projects the venerated actor has been involved with, perhaps none as famously as Saving Private Ryan. He would follow that up a short three years later as executive producer, alongside Saving Private Ryan‘s Steven Spielberg, with the best HBO war miniseries of all time: Band of Brothers, an uncompromising account of World War II through the eyes of “Easy Company.” 25 years later, it’s still surging on streaming.

‘Band of Brothers’ Is Not Your Conventional War Drama

The first thing that strikes you about Band of Brothers, which dramatizes the history of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, aka “Easy Company,” is how out of place it seems on a television screen, in a good way. It looks like it belongs on a movie screen, akin to dropping a documentary unit into the past. That is purposeful, down to shooting on 35mm motion picture film with a host of cinematic techniques, as well as battle sequences that utilize practical effects.

Band of Brothers also boasts an unprecedented degree of historical accuracy — maybe not to a “change the starry skies to match what passengers aboard the Titanic would have seen” level, but still down to the most minute of details, like how to pack a parachute, or how elbows are bent to absorb recoil. All of it comes together to create a visceral experience that captures the realities of war. Battles aren’t beautifully shot scenes where the soldiers magically evade life-altering, even life-ending, injuries while keeping their coiffed hair intact. They are ugly, constrictive, and exhausting, and every win comes with great loss. That each episode begins with an interview with surviving veterans of Easy Company adds credence to that authenticity.

HBO’s ‘Band of Brothers’ Prioritizes Characters Over Spectacle

Band of Brothers‘ beginning interviews are a stark reminder that the characters in the series are real people, blurring the line between reality and fiction in a way that other war dramas simply can’t replicate. The series isn’t taking dramatic license with its portrayals, but rather mirroring the experiences and emotions that the characters’ real-life counterparts explain in harrowing detail. In doing so, it makes the unrelatable relatable.

The series also maintains a delicate balancing act between combat scenes and emotional honesty. We care about the soldiers because we’re given the time to know them on a personal level, which in turn adds a degree of investment in the stunningly realistic battle scenes. Band of Brothers melds them together, as opposed to keeping the spectacle of battle and humanity apart, a commonality among its kin.

25 Years Later, Steven Spielberg’s 10-Part War Drama Show Is Still a Masterpiece From Start to Finish

When an appearance by Tom Hanks’ son is the least exciting part, you know it’s a good show.

Arguably, the one thing that makes Band of Brothers the best HBO war miniseries is right there in the title. There’s a subtle but unmistakable difference between characters in a war drama that talk about brotherhood, and a true brotherhood like the one that exists in Band of Brothers. There’s an undercurrent of trust and camaraderie among the characters that can only exist if the actors themselves have the same. Spielberg had the cast go through boot camp together, not only to aim for a degree of realism in their actions and responses, but in an effort to create a true bond between them.

It clearly worked, leading to a brotherhood that doesn’t need to be stated to be believed, aided by having the cast exist as a true ensemble for the series as opposed to elevating one name above another. Band of Brothers set an almost-impossibly high watermark for war drama, yet served as a template for two sequential series from the group – 2010’s The Pacific and 2024’s Masters of the Air – both of which were lauded for many of the same merits. World War II with Tom Hanks may have spurred the interest in revisiting Band of Brothers, but the series keeps that interest on its own strengths. That’s what being the best is all about.

13 Years Later, Jason Statham’s Bone-Crunching Action Gem Is Finding New Life on Streaming

Published

on

01168427_poster_w780.jpg

If you’re looking for some action, but you don’t want to leave the comfort of your own couch, then a mezze of Jason Statham movies currently in the streaming rotation is your best port of call. From delivering plenty of laughs in the espionage satire Spy and defining a genre of British gangster flicks in Snatch, to telling a heist story in reverse in Wrath of Man and delivering a perfect shot of adrenaline in The Beekeeper, Statham’s performances are some of the best for action fans.

Before he returns to the role of Adam Clay in The Beekeeper 2, although this time under director Timo Tjahjanto instead of David Ayer, one of Statham’s most underrated action efforts is about to become available on free streaming. Loved by some for its detailed homage to action classics of yesteryear, Homefront was released in 2013 and returned a promising box office haul of $51.6 million, against a reported production budget of $22 million. Although critics responded negatively, with many calling the film “dull,” audiences disagreed with Homefront becoming a gem in Statham’s vast catalog.

Written by Rocky himself, Sylvester Stallone, and based on Chuck Logan’s novel, the movie features an eye-catching supporting cast, including James Franco, Winona Ryder, Frank Grillo, and more. Telling Statham’s favorite tale of a man living a quiet life who is forced into unleashing his very particular set of skills on unsuspecting villains, the movie ticks all the boxes for an easy action weekend watch. You’ll be able to do just that next month, as Homefront starts streaming for free on Plex on June 1, 2026.

Your Partner Has Been Assigned
Your Perfect Partner Is…

Your answers have pointed to one action hero above all others. This is the person built to have your back — for better or considerably, spectacularly worse.

Rambo

Your partner doesn’t talk much, doesn’t need to, and will have assessed every threat in your immediate environment before you’ve finished your first sentence. John Rambo is not a man of plans or politics — he is a force of nature shaped by survival, loyalty, and a capacity for endurance that goes beyond anything training can produce. He will not leave you behind. He has never left anyone behind who deserved to come home. What you get with Rambo is the most capable, most quietly ferocious partner imaginable — one who has been through things that would have broken anyone else, and who chose to keep going anyway. You’ll never need to ask if he has your back. You’ll just know.

James Bond

Your partner will arrive perfectly dressed, perfectly briefed, and with a cover story so convincing it’ll take you a moment to remember what’s actually true. James Bond is the most professionally dangerous person in any room he enters — and the most disarmingly charming, which is the point. He operates in a world of layers, where nothing is what it appears and every advantage is used without apology. You’ll never be bored. You’ll occasionally be furious. But when it matters — when the mission is genuinely on the line and the margin for error has collapsed to nothing — Bond is exactly the partner you want. He has survived things that have no business being survivable. He does it with style. That is not nothing.

Indiana Jones

Your partner will know the history, the language, the cultural context, and exactly why the thing everyone else is ignoring is actually the most important thing in the room. Indiana Jones is brilliant, reckless, and occasionally impossible — but he is also one of the most resourceful, most genuinely knowledgeable partners you could find yourself beside. He approaches every situation with a scholar’s eye and a brawler’s instinct, which is an unusual combination and a remarkably effective one. He hates snakes and gets personally attached to objects of historical significance, both of which will slow you down at least once. It doesn’t matter. What Indy brings is irreplaceable — and the adventures you’ll have together will be the kind people write books about. Assuming you survive them.

John McClane

Your partner was not supposed to be here. He does not have the right equipment, the right information, or anything approaching the right odds. He has a sarcastic remark and an absolute refusal to accept that the situation is as bad as it looks. John McClane is the greatest accidental hero in the history of action cinema — a man whose superpower is stubbornness, whose contingency plan is improvisation, and whose capacity to absorb punishment and keep moving would be alarming if it weren’t so useful. He will complain the entire time. He will make it significantly more chaotic than it needed to be. And he will absolutely, unconditionally, without question come through when it counts. Yippee-ki-yay.

Ethan Hunt

Your partner has already run seventeen scenarios by the time you’ve finished reading the briefing, and the plan he’s settled on involves at least two things that should be physically impossible. Ethan Hunt operates at the absolute edge of human capability — technically, physically, and intellectually — and he brings the same relentless precision to protecting his partners that he brings to dismantling organisations that shouldn’t exist. He is not easy to know and he will never fully tell you everything. But he will carry the weight of the mission so completely, so absolutely, that your job is simply to trust him — and the remarkable thing is that trusting him always turns out to be the right call. The mission will be impossible. He will complete it anyway.

Your Next Jason Statham Obsession Just Entered Post-Production

Viva La Madness, a new action-thriller based on J.J. Connolly’s 2011 novel and the follow-up to Layer Cake, has officially entered post-production, according to an exclusive obtained by Collider. “I think we finished that about a month ago,” director Guy Ritchie told Steve Weintraub, “It was a great pleasure working with Jason.” The film stars the likes of Statham, Vinnie Jones, Jason Isaacs, Babs Olusanmokun, Camila Mendes, Ben Foster, Jonny Lee Miller, and Raúl Alejandro. It marks the sixth collaboration between Britain’s most famous modern Hollywood ass-kicker and director Ritchie, almost 30 years since they first joined forces on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
