West Wilson and Amanda Batula always had a playful friendship, but after news broke in March of their budding romance, their Summer House season 10 actions are being called into question.

Season 10 on the Bravo series premiered in February, one month after Amanda and Kyle Cooke announced their split following four years of marriage. Throughout the season, which was filmed in summer 2025, viewers have seen the beginning of the end of Amanda and Kyle’s tumultuous relationship.

However, it’s the intimate moments between West and Amanda that are now turning heads following their joint March 31 announcement that their feelings for each other have recently “evolved” from friends to something more.

“We’ve shown up for each other as friends over the years, through all the highs and lows, and what’s developed recently was the last thing either of us expected,” the pair wrote in a joint Instagram post. “Our connection grew out of a genuine, longstanding friendship, which made it especially important for us to approach this with care.”

Kyle broke his silence over the scandal on April 1, admitting that he now sees West’s season 10 actions towards Amanda in a different light.

“Looking back, there’s a lot of us that look at his body language and how touchy and handsy he is with her,” Kyle told Adam Glynn in a three-part TikTok video. “And I kinda just gave him a little bit of a hall pass, [saying], ‘Oh, it’s West.’”

Fans of the show have also taken note of West and Amanda’s deepening connection captured by the Summer House cameras during season 10 scenes, pointing out that many of their moments haven’t aged well.

Pie in the Face

During the season premiere, which aired in February, West hosted a “county fair” themed party to kick off summer. Amidst milking a fake cow to get White Russians and doing a keg stand, West was pied in the face by his ex Ciara Miller. West then grabbed a few pies of his own and got Ciara back before grabbing Amanda and smashing the pie in her face.

West later shared photos from the first weekend in the Hamptons via Instagram, revealing that he and Amanda were both covered in whipped cream after the fun at the party. In one photo, West held onto Amanda’s neck as they both sat alone on the floor.

The Topless Plunge

At the end of episode 1, West was among the housemates who decided to jump into the pool to clean off after the pie war. When Amanda took off her bandana top and was in just her nude bra and underwear, West was the first to notice.

“Wait, Amanda is naked!” West yelled, pointing it out to the group. His eyes got wide as Amanda walked into the pool looking nearly nude.

“Your tits are so out it’s kind of insane,” West told her when she came close to him in the pool.

When Ben Waddell handed Amanda a towel, her husband, Kyle, noticed she was scantily clothed and yelled at her for being “naked.” Amanda clapped back, pointing out she was wearing clothes and everyone was in the pool.

Bear Hug

Amanda made fun of West’s voice during episode 2, after he sounded like a bear while asking, “Are we doing a boys’ car?” After Amanda mocked him, he ran over to her near the car and gave her a big bear hug.

The playful interaction came one night after Kyle claimed to West and other guys in the house that he and Amanda’s sex life was non-existent because she “smokes weed every night.”

Table Giggles

After Kyle blew up at Ciara during episode 3 for interrupting his group apology at dinner, Amanda started to laugh. Carl Radke went to talk to Kyle and then reported back to the group that Kyle feels like Ciara doesn’t ever have his back.

West, who was seated next to Amanda at the time, then started to laugh. He made a face while looking at Amanda and insisted that Kyle was “fine.”

‘I’m Married!’

West hosted a singles’ mixer in New York City during episode 4, which Amanda attended with Lindsay Hubbard as her plus one. (Kyle was out of town for the event.)

When the ladies arrived, West greeted them, telling Lindsay, “You look hot!” As he hugged Lindsay, he looked over her shoulder and added, “You look good too, Amanda.”

“No, it’s OK, I’m married,” Amanda replied, brushing off the delayed compliment.

Later that episode, Amanda and West were chilling on a couch at their shared house in the Hamptons when she revealed she wasn’t feeling well and might need to skip Kyle’s DJ set.

“Your boyfriend has a big performance,” West told Amanda in a joking tone. “My boyfriend,” Amanda replied, laughing along with West.

Birthday Wishes

When it came to Amanda’s birthday dinner, she was once again seated next to West — with her husband Kyle on the other side. During episode 6, which aired in March, the cast went around the table and said something nice about the birthday girl, including West.

“Amanda, since I’ve known you, you’ve accomplished so many big things from where you were,” West told her while looking into her eyes. “I know you were struggling before and you’ve been out of your shell and it’s fun to watch you do s***.”

“That was very nice,” Amanda replied.

Bathroom Crying Session

During episode 8, Kyle accused Amanda of not supporting him before yelling, “F*** you,” and storming inside the house. The name-calling appeared to come out of nowhere, and although Amanda wanted to forget it happened, West wasn’t OK with the altercation.

Once Amanda was in her bathroom getting ready for bed, West came in to console her and show her support.

“Objectively, nothing just happened. That’s bizarre to me,” West confessed. “That’s the first time where I’ve ever seen something where 100 percent [it] was unprovoked.”

Amanda thanked him for “understanding” her side and started to cry off camera. “There was a part of me that was like, ‘This is the best I’m ever going to do. And he loves me so much,’” Amanda told West through tears. “[I was] constantly making excuses.”

“I care about both of them and I want them both to be happy. If Kyle is being a f***ing d***head, I don’t know, who has Amanda’s back?” West said during a confessional.

Late-night Arm Graze

Kyle and Amanda got into a bigger argument during episode 8 after he claimed she “ignored” him and only wanted to hang out with their friends. Kyle then called his spouse a “f***ing dumbass bitch.”

Amanda left the room to go to the kitchen where she encountered West in the hall. As she walked into West he tried to grab her hand for comfort but she pushed him off. Eagle-eyed fans later noticed that Amanda actually grazed West’s arm and pulled her own hand across his back before going into the kitchen.

‘Coming Back’ for West and Jesse

West confronted Kyle over being “unnecessary” with Amanda during episode 9, claiming that he was completely unprovoked.

West advised Kyle to apologize to Amanda, adding that both he and Jesse Solomon had his “back,” but he needed to say “sorry” once and for all after calling Amanda names one episode prior.

When Jesse shared with Amanda how West “literally told Kyle off,” she was happy, saying, “I love you guys.”

She then revealed, “You guys are the best and that’s why I keep coming back,” joking, “I don’t come back for him,” in reference to Kyle.

Sitting Pretty

During episode 11, which was filmed in August 2025, Amanda and West had a cozy moment — that all of their castmates saw.

As Jesse explained to the group what he envisioned for his Las Vegas-themed party that weekend, Amanda asked whether there would be “pool boys” walking around. West playfully yelled back, “No!”

Minutes later, West went and sat on Amanda’s stomach as she lounged on one of the pool chairs. As West and Amanda listened to Jesse’s plan, Kyle was seated alongside them seemingly unaware of their closeness.

“Stop farting on me, you sicko,” Amanda told West at one point, getting a big grin on her face as she teased him.

The moment comes after West had a similar moment with Ciara during episode 6. In a confessional, Ciara revealed, “Here’s the thing about West: When he sits on you, he has a crush.”

A Comforting Moment

Amanda was upset during episode 11 after she realized she hurt Ben’s feelings when she joked to his girlfriend about him allegedly wanting to “have sex” with her when they first met in Italy the prior summer. West, however, thought the whole situation was funny.

“I love that you got in trouble for something,” West told Amanda in the kitchen after she confessed she was stressed about having to apologize.

“No, I’ve cried like five times about it,” she explained, noting that she told Ben’s girlfriend, Sabrina Belle, all about “how great he’s been all summer” to try and fix her mistake.

West pretended to be Ben, saying how “he wants to f***ing slam me.” Amanda laughed as West put his hands on her shoulders to calm her down.

Crashing His Party

Throughout episode 11, West raised eyebrows among his housemates when they noticed him kissing a random girl and flirting with her in front of ex Ciara. When Amanda clocked it, she asked pal Mia Calabrese, “OK so who’s this girl that West is about to f***?”

Amanda decided to intervene and go and lay in bed with West and the girl, who was later identified as a woman named Emmie.

“Whatcha doing? Can I come in for a cuddle?” Amanda asked as she laid down next to West on a big lounge bed by the pool. “Am I crashing your party?”

West replied, “No, absolutely not” after squeezing Amanda’s arm and putting it around her.

As Amanda started to talk to the girl, West played with Amanda’s hair and brushed her shoulders. Amanda didn’t skip a beat, instead she gushed about her husband Kyle to the random woman, calling him the “best DJ in the Hamptons.”

When Amanda got up from the bed, wearing just a bikini, she told West, “I gotta go. Watch my butt when I walk away.”

All in the Name of Ciara?

Amanda called out West during episode 11, which aired in April 2026, for getting “too comfortable on probation” after he kissed a girl while sitting next to ex-girlfriend, and her longtime friend, Ciara.

“To a fault I’ve tried to protect whatever the f*** our relationship is, which I don’t even know what it is,” West told Amanda and a few of their other housemates in defense of his party faux pas.

Amanda, however, wasn’t buying it. “You guys have been making progress, so my question is: why at this small, intimate party do you decide to have this girl sitting in your lap the whole time? And, like, making out with her?” she asked.

Kyle took West’s side, telling Amanda, “That’s not fair!” Amanda clapped back at her spouse telling him not to “make me get mad at you.”

Amanda then turned back to West, telling him, “All I’m saying is if you want to make progress in your relationship with Ciara there’s a level of respect that we have to have to live here together.”

‘Any Advice?’

Amanda and Kyle met up with West during episode 12 to help him raise money for a pet adoption charity in New York City. While Kyle got West and Amanda drinks at the bar, Amanda checked in to see how West was doing after he messed up one week prior, kissing a woman in front of his ex and her then-friend Ciara.

“What upset me the most is that you’ve been such a good friend to me all summer long,” Amanda told West after the pair shared a long and lingering hug, as many fans pointed out on social media.

She reminded him, “It bothers you when you see Kyle disrespects me. [You’re] someone who’s been so supportive of me and looking out for me and standing up for me. Then to watch you disrespect Ciara in that way, it puts this weird dynamic in place.”

West explained that he had been “trying to protect everything,” but it hadn’t gone to plan. “I’m a f***ing idiot. I understand why it was disrespectful and hurtful,” West continued, before asking Amanda, “What did I just jeopardize?”

Amanda acknowledged that there are “a lot of moving pieces and a lot of layers” to West and Ciara’s dynamic, but she pointed out that it’s more complicated because they don’t hate each other.

“If you hated each other, go ahead and do whatever you want,” Amanda quipped, before making a face at him. “But you guys are also, rumor has it, super flirty when you go out at night?”

When Amanda exchanged a cheeky glance at West, he replied, “That is true,” confessing, “Now the friendship is f***ed.”

West finished the conversation by asking if Amanda had “any advice” for him, laughing awkwardly.

“Don’t go silent. Take accountability. Apologize. Then there’s no ands, ifs and buts,” Amanda advised in the eyebrow-raising scene.

West’s ‘Best Night’ Irks Amanda

Amanda stayed in New York City during episode 13 while Kyle headed to the Hamptons with their friends. While Kyle said she rarely responded back to his texts that weekend, Amanda did call her spouse while he was on a boat with their pals to vent about feeling left out — but only when it came to West.

“When West said, ‘Best night of my life,’ and you said, ‘Damn,’ was that, like, sarcasm?” Kyle asked Amanda when she called him, referring to a text message she sent to the group the night before.

Amanda confessed it was not sarcasm, explaining that she meant, “Way to rub salt in the wound.”

“Wow, so she was feeling jealous,” Kyle said under his breath to Ciara on the boat.

Amanda explained, “West’s best night of his life is the one night I’m not there? Yeah, that feels great.” Kyle fired back, “You made it about you, but I get it,” to which Amanda replied, “Of course I did.”

‘Double Date’ Death Stare

After missing the weekend in the Hamptons, Amanda reunited with the cast — and West — at Carl’s SoftBar soft launch during episode 13. When Amanda asked West about his conversation with Ciara, during which they seemingly made amends, he said it “couldn’t have gone better.”

Amanda replied, “That’s good,” but her facial expression was less enthusiastic.

West explained that after he and Ciara worked out their issues, the rest of the cast arrived and met them at the docks. “They all came later and got out of the car, I was like, ‘Uh, I wish Amanda was getting out of this f***ing car,’” West said, without expanding on why. (Kyle was standing next to them.)

Later that night, Jesse told Amanda that Ciara and West were “hanging out” after the launch party, which totally caught her off guard.

“Tonight? They have plans?” she responded, visibly shocked by the exes going on a “double date” with costars Ben and his girlfriend, Sabrina.

Jesse confessed, “I haven’t talked to West about it, but yeah, they’re back to being normal friends again, I guess.”

“OK, but like, that’s not friends,” Amanda said, once again expressing a disappointed look on her face. “How did we go from zero to 100? … West has to be cautious because I don’t think that [Ciara] can handle just a friendship. But we’ll see.”

Amanda Is ‘Weary’ of West

After Amanda learned that Ciara and West had mended their friendship, she got real about her feelings toward the situation.

“I was like, ‘The last thing I would ever do is invite Ciara and West out on an intimate date,’” Amanda told Mia during episode 14, which aired on May 5. “They just became friends.”

Mia agreed it’s “too soon” for people to be shipping West and Ciara following their ceasefire one week prior.

“Even if they got back together — happy. Literally would make me the happiest person in the whole entire world. The happiest,” Amanda claimed. “But he needs to be f***ing ready. It’s him.”

Amanda confessed, “I’m skeptical and weary of him,” noting that Ciara is “a very special, incredible person and you need to treat her differently than any other woman in the world.”

She hinted that West was not who she had in mind to rise to the occasion. “Until a man is capable of doing that I don’t trust anyone with her heart. I would die for that girl,” Amanda claimed. “The way I would cut West off in one f***ing second if she looked at me. If she gave me one look, [I’d] attack.”

Pulling Up to the Table

At the end of episode 14, Kyle began to spiral after Lindsay made a quip about his life choices, saying, “Kyle lost his wedding ring, but he found a DJ career” this year.

When Lindsay called out Kyle for pursuing a DJ career “without talking to your wife about it,” Kyle lost it. “Don’t gang up!” he yelled at the group.

Kyle then turned his attention to Amanda, who was sitting across from him at the table, and said, “F*** you.”

The group was instantly upset by Kyle’s outburst, with Lindsay telling him, “No, no! If you want to say, ‘f*** you,’ say it to me.”

West, meanwhile, told Kyle, “That’s the one thing I’ve stood up for all summer, don’t say that.”

West then moved his chair from one side of the room to sit next to Amanda and have her back, literally. “Talk to Lindsay, don’t look at Amanda. You’re fine,” West told Kyle, trying to deescalate the situation.

When Kyle began to yell at everyone, screaming, “F*** everybody,” both West and Carl jumped up to try and make him “chill the f*** out.”

The Shoulder Touch

During episode 15, which aired on May 12, Carl and Kyle got into a heated argument outside the Hamptons house after Kyle yelled, “F*** you” to Amanda at the group table.

“What happened?” Amanda asked West when she finally came outside to see what was going on between the two. “They’re fighting, but let them go,” West responded.

Amanda, however, said, “No,” and tried to interject and calm Kyle down as he continued to yell at Carl.

As Amanda grabbed Kyle’s face and told him to stop screaming at Carl, West came up behind her and put his hands on her shoulder to seemingly support her. (He also placed his hands around her back and ribcage.)

West later told Kyle that it was Lindsay who started everything, adding, “You kept looking at Amanda.” West claimed, “Your s*** with Amanda comes out when other people are talking to you,” arguing that “Amanda didn’t say anything.”

Following the end of the fight — Kyle apologized to Carl later that night — West had an intimate moment with Amanda when he was walking inside to grab a chair.

“You pulling up your f***ing chair next to me,” Amanda started to say, before getting emotional and crying into West’s chest, suggesting that she felt supported at that moment. (West previously moved his chair behind Amanda at the dinner table when Kyle started to raise his voice.)

West massaged her hair as they hugged in the foray. “Thank you,” Amanda said as West pulled her in and gave her a kiss on the cheek. “I love you,” she added. West asked if Amanda was “OK” to which she nodded in approval.

Separation Could Be Good

During the same episode, West and Jesse pondered over the idea that Kyle and Amanda should separate amid their marriage problems — which Ciara had suggested earlier that weekend.

“He’s just so dramatic that I don’t think he could let her do that and not make it into, like, ‘She’s leaving me,’” West said of Kyle, claiming he wouldn’t agree with a break.

Wellington made it clear that even if she decides to tap into future endeavors, she’s going to make sure that everything is done properly. Per Black Enterprise, Coach Stormy must ensure any future earnings claims stay truthful, non-misleading, and backed by written evidence.

“There are some things that I use as a marketer. There are some things that I use as strategies, you know, I’m a manifestor. I believe that life and death is in the power of the tongue. A new video emerged of Cardi, 33, and Diggs, 32, seemingly in a tense exchange during their meetup in Burtonsville, Maryland, on Wednesday, May 13. In the now-viral clip posted on X, the rapper looked frustrated while emotionally addressing Diggs, raising her hands in the air as the former football player leaned up against his car.

Cardi seemingly addressed the video writing via X, “Sometimes I forget I’m a celebrity … damn y’all ain’t never cuss your babydad out when you hungry?”

News of Cardi and Diggs’ recent outing comes three days after the pair reunited for a Mother’s Day event hosted by the athlete’s foundation. According to footage shared by sports reporter Kelsey Nicole Nelson, Diggs wrapped his arms around Cardi’s waist as they posed for photos.

Following the event, Us reported that Cardi and Diggs rekindled their romance in the wake of their split earlier this year.

“Cardi and Stefon are giving things another shot,” a source exclusively told Us. “She is giving him a second chance but is not fully committing to him.”

The insider explained that the couple were taking things slow as Cardi was “slowly letting” Diggs “back in” to her life.

“They’ve been in closer contact lately. Things are no longer contentious,” the source said. “She still has love for Stefon, which makes it difficult to walk away.”

Cardi and Diggs were first romantically linked last year following the Grammy winner’s split from Migos rapper Offset. In November 2025, Cardi and Diggs welcomed their first baby together. “They are always so up and down,” a source told Us of Cardi and Diggs’ split at the time. “This isn’t the first time they have broken up.”

Prime Video has just dropped its latest soapy drama, Off Campus, and has already greenlit a second season to come. The series is based on the four-book romance novel series of the same name by Elle Kennedy, with Season 1 being primarily based on the first book in the series, The Deal. In the show, we follow star hockey team captain Garrett Graham (Belmont Cameli) and music student Hannah Wells (Ella Bright) as they accidentally fall in love after making a deal for Hannah to tutor Garrett and for Garrett to pretend to date Hannah.

With bubbling chemistry between the two leads, Collider sat down with Cameli and Bright to discuss their experience playing the two lovers and the sex scenes they had to film, breaking down how they were cast, and playing through the more serious scenes between their characters. While Season 1 of the series is fairly light, the show also doesn’t shy away from the topics that Kennedy covers in her books, specifically Hannah’s past assault and the physical abuse Garrett has experienced from his father. Belmont Cameli and Ella Bright Reveal the Casting Process for Hannah and Garrett in ‘Off Campus’

COLLIDER: First off, I love this series. I love the books, and you guys are such a good Hannah and Garrett. It’s honestly so great to see you guys on screen and meshing together really well. I’m curious, what was it like when you guys first met, and did you have a chemistry read or anything like that? What was that experience like?

ELLA BRIGHT: Yeah, the chemistry read was pretty crazy. There were about 22 actors in that room.

BELMONT CAMELI: There were 28. There were so many people.

BRIGHT: That’s a lot of people, and everyone was kind of filing in. They were finding the hockey team, Hannah and Allie’s relationship, Hannah and Garrett, and Justin. I was reading with a couple of the Garretts, and it felt really great, but when Bel came in, it was like a whole other story. He left the room, and everyone was like, “Well, that’s obviously Garrett Graham.” It was kind of immediate. It was very, very fun. That was a really exciting day. The energy just felt very electric. It was very cool.

CAMELI: Yeah. Our scenes felt really honest and simple, and good. We were fast friends, like, from the chemistry read until when we got on set together, and then we spent all summer together sitting in chairs like this when we weren’t on set. We get along great, and it was super easy and fun.

What was it like filming for the first time? Do you guys remember the first scene you filmed together?

BRIGHT: It was when she first tutors him in philosophy. It’s when she first comes to his room.

CAMELI: That was our first scene together?

BRIGHT: Yeah, that was our first scene together.

CAMELI: Oh, that’s nice.

BRIGHT: Yeah, cute scene.

CAMELI: It’s funny because when you start something completely new, you’re like, “Okay, I’ve done all the prep that I’ve done, and I feel ready,” but you never are. It still takes filming to find certain things, and then by the end of a shooting block, you can be like, “Alright, well, I’ve done these things, so it’s informing this.” But at the beginning, you’re not informed by anything yet, so it’s really just about listening and trusting and trying things and playing, and that went just swimmingly. It was fun to just get started.

Obviously, this series is very steamy, and I feel like those scenes can be a little bit daunting to film. What was it like for you guys prepping for it? Did you guys work with an intimacy coordinator? What was the pre-planning period for it?

CAMELI: Everything gets discussed, down to every last detail, with our intimacy coordinator, with showrunners, with writers.

BRIGHT: With each other.

CAMELI: Yeah, with each other. The sex on the show is to advance the narrative. There’s an emotional journey happening separately and together for these characters, and so the sex is to reflect whatever’s happening or what they’re thinking of or what they’re not considering, yada, yada. So, the conversations we have ahead of time, before those scenes, are lengthy and detailed, and sometimes we’re like, “Okay, we just talked about it so much,” but it’s important that we did because then you can get there on the day, and our intimacy coordinator is there helping us feel safe. Everything’s been thought through and talked about. So yeah, we feel really comfortable and safe, as much as you can shooting a sex scene.

I’m very curious about both of your characters because they both have a lot of serious past trauma in their lives, and I think it might surprise some people coming into the series for the first time, because the way it’s presented, you kind of get blindsided by it even in the book when you’re reading it. What was it like exploring that trauma for both of your characters and getting into the meat of those types of topics?

BRIGHT: It’s definitely something that drew me to the books and the part, from the beginning. Like college, the show is fun and sexy, and it has all these really entertaining and exciting parts. But like life, people are complex, and life is difficult in some moments, and both of these characters have these harder aspects to their lives that create these conversations, and it was so beautiful to get to explore that. We both put a lot of care and thought into every line that was written by our incredible team of writers and showrunner, who were just so talented, and it was a really awesome space to be able to portray these characters that I think have a really special relationship.

CAMELI: Ultimately, some of these more dramatic and real arcs were hard. They’re kind of exhausting sometimes. Like, playing out Garrett’s rage for a whole summer was pretty taxing, to be totally honest. But that’s, like you said, same as you, Ella, what drew me to this character. And in a YA show, it’s an elevated YA show, it was an opportunity to play out some heavier themes that you may not normally get from a show in this lane. So, that’s what really excited me and drew me to this character and the show. And then it was just great to have an opportunity to play those things out and hopefully give an audience something meaningful to take away from.

I really liked your scenes with Steve Howey. You kind of fooled me a little bit because I was like, “Oh, maybe he’s a different man,” and then I was like, “Oh, no.”

CAMELI: Yeah, that tug of war of wanting him to be good and wanting him to change was something that Steve and I talked a lot about, too.

Belmont Cameli Reveals His Expertise in Hockey in ‘Off Campus’

Belmont, this season is very physical for you, playing a hockey player. I did just talk to the guys, and I’m curious if you had any hockey experience going into this and what the training and prep were like for that.

CAMELI: Well, if you talk to the guys already, you know that I’m the fastest in the group.

They didn’t mention that.

BRIGHT: They didn’t?!

CAMELI: Really? Unbelievable.

BRIGHT: Crazy they wouldn’t say that.

CAMELI: Well, I mean, because they’re embarrassed. They’re slow. I’m like a fucking blur out there. It’s nuts. Which is even crazier because I’d never played hockey before, but I pretty much just stepped out there and started cutting it up. And, yeah, it’s gotten to a place now where Stephen [Kalyn] will come up to me and be like, “How do I do this?” I’ll be like, “Here’s how you do it,” I’ll show him how to do it. No, I’m kidding. I sucked at hockey when I started. I couldn’t fucking stand up. [Laughs] But I’m getting better every day. Not every day, because I can’t train every day. But mentally, I am getting better every day because I visualize.

BRIGHT: It’s great.

CAMELI: So that helps.

One day, Stephen will come to you for advice. That’s the goal.

BRIGHT: It’s coming.

CAMELI: Yes, 100%. I can’t wait for that day. It’s gonna so good.

So, something I’m asking all of the cast is if you have a specific song or a playlist that helped you get into the mood of playing your characters.

BRIGHT: Yeah, absolutely. It’s been really cool. We got to recently share these playlists with some of the supporters of the show, which has been really fun. But yeah, for me, that was kind of the first thing I did was create a playlist for Hannah and a Pinterest board and read the book and get everything together as my prep. There are a lot of songs. There’s a lot of Taylor Swift in there that I do feel relates to her in many ways.

CAMELI: I built a playlist of what I just thought was Garrett’s taste in music. His taste in music in the book is, because the book’s 10 years old, so it was classic, classic rock, and I certainly have some of those in there, but I kind of updated it to more of a more modern version of it. And then I have a Fuck Phil Graham playlist of just, like, rage songs that I listen to quite a bit during filming, and it really helps you get there.

The fantasy genre is a fan-favorite and a crucial part of cinematic history. Dating back to the first-ever fantasy movies that came out throughout the 1910s and ’20s, the genre has evolved, experiencing several milestones throughout the subsequent one hundred years of cinema. Among the greatest highlights are 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, 1946’s It’s a Wonderful Life, 1987’s The Princess Bride, and 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, to name just a few.

In the new millennium, the fantasy genre experienced a boom after being dormant for most of the ’90s, and by the middle of the decade, the genre had come back to life with a vengeance thanks to the rise of franchises and a newfound appreciation for classic tales of heroism and magic. Twenty years ago, it saw one of its most successful years in recent memory through a slew of memorable movies, some of which have become outright masterpieces. These are the best fantasy movies to come out in 2006, a collection of truly impressive efforts that have only gotten better with age.

‘Charlotte’s Web’

The second adaptation of the 1952 eponymous novel by E. B. White, Gary Winick‘s Charlotte’s Web stars an ensemble led by a then-twelve-year-old Dakota Fanning. The film follows the piglet Wilbur (Dominic Scott Kay), who learns he will eventually end up at the farmer’s dinner table. Together with the wise spider Charlotte (Julia Roberts), Wilbur hatches a plan to avoid being turned into bacon.

It might not be as great as the now-iconic 1973 animated version, but this take on Charlotte’s Web maintains all the delightful charm of the source material without losing an ounce of its poignancy. At its core, it’s a tale about the nature of life and how friendship and complicity can make even the darkest futures seem more hopeful. The ensemble of voice talent alone is worth a watch (we have Robert Redford as a horse, for crying out loud!), but Charlotte’s Web is also a worthwhile family adventure that has only gotten better with age.

‘The Fountain’

Darren Aronofsky is a very love-him-or-hate-him kind of filmmaker, and The Fountain might be his most misunderstood effort. The 2006 science fantasy romance stars Hugh Jackman and Rachel Weisz in a love tale that spans millennia. The main narrative centers on three different stories: a 16th-century conquistador goes on a quest to find a source of immortality to save his dying queen; in the present day, a scientist attempts to cure his wife’s cancer; and in the twenty-sixth century, an astronaut embarks on an interstellar journey.

The Fountain balances genres, themes, timelines, and narratives to produce a meditative and poignant yet admittedly uneven fantasy. Visually, the film is a feast, with Aronofsky favoring style like never before. Thematically, it really goes for it, covering everything from metaphysics to existentialism in an exploration of the enduring, life-altering nature of love. Jackman is perfectly committed as the lead, while Weisz is outright ethereal as his muse. Like many of Aronofsky’s movies, The Fountain‘s reach exceeds its grasp, but those willing to surrender to its distinct charms are in for a one-of-a-kind ride.

‘The Fall’

Few, if any, movies are as ambitious as The Fall. Shot over four years in a whopping 24 countries, Tarsem Singh‘s magnum opus stars Lee Pace as stuntman Roy Walker, who is hospitalized after a stunt gone wrong leaves him paraplegic, potentially for good. In the hospital, he meets young Alexandria (Catinca Untaru) and begins telling her a fantastic tale about a group of heroes seeking revenge against an evil ruler.

The Fall is among the most sprawling and sumptuous movies ever made. It is literally the definition of “ambitious,” a daring tale that perfectly encapsulates the unique power that cinema can have as an expression of singular artistic merit. The narrative is admittedly flawed, and it often threatens to crumble under the weight of its own impulses, but the visuals are so lush that it’s hard to fault it. The Fall is a film that must truly be seen to be believed, a spectacularly unique effort from one of cinema’s boldest and most uncompromising auteurs.

‘Stranger Than Fiction’

The 2006 fantasy rom-com Stranger Than Fiction might be Will Ferrell‘s most underappreciated effort of the 2000s. The actor plays Harold Crick, a quiet and introverted accountant who, one day out of nowhere, begins hearing a voice narrating his day-to-day, revealing that he will soon be dying. Attempting to retake control of his narrative, Harold begins a journey of self-discovery. Meanwhile, the author, neurotic recluse Karen Eiffel (Emma Thompson), struggles to finish her story.

Quirky and witty, Stranger Than Fiction is a clever twist on the classic rom-com formula. Ferrell shines against type as a square of an accountant who wasted much of his life in mindless routine. The ensemble cast — Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, Dustin Hoffman — is also stellar, particularly Thompson, who delivers one of her most delightfully unhinged performances. Stranger Than Fiction is a gem of 2000s cinema, a biting and strangely melancholic curio that shines a light on the importance of taking chances and how everyday, seemingly random choices can and eventually do shape our lives in the long term.

‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest’

In 2003, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl brought the swashbuckling genre back to life. Three years later, the sequel, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, delivered yet another adventure of whimsical intensity in the high seas. The plot sees Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) attempting to escape from a deal he made with the wicked Davy Jones (Bill Nighy). Meanwhile, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) embarks on a quest to free his father from Jones’ servitude, while Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) tries to save herself and Will from prison for helping Jack during their first adventure.

Bigger and bolder than the first movie, Dead Man’s Chest has aged beautifully and is now widely considered a triumph of blockbuster filmmaking. The plot is convoluted, and the main trio of performances is a tad less impressive than the first time around. However, the film soars on the strength of Nighy’s transformative, Oscar-worthy portrayal of Davy Jones, quite possibly the best Disney live-action villain in modern cinema. The VFX are also jaw-dropping, with Jones standing as one of the most impressive and fully-realized CGI creations in the medium.

‘The Science of Sleep’

As the follow-up to his generation-defining soft sci-fi masterpiece Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Michel Gondry chose the fantasy romance The Science of Sleep. Mexican icon Gael García Bernal stars as Stéphane, a young man reeling from the death of his father while living in Paris. Soon after starting a new job, Stéphane’s extremely vivid dreams begin messing with his real life and interfere with his courtship of his next-door neighbor, Stéphanie (Charlotte Gainsbourg).

If any movie has ever captured the strikingly beautiful and chaotic nature of dreams, it’s The Science of Sleep. Make no mistake, this remarkable film is messy, but it’s very much by design. Powered by a game García Bernal, this gem is a lovely exploration of romance and the quirks that make every individual unique. Here, each of us exists in a little world of our own, and sometimes, it spills out into reality, but that’s exactly what makes life worth living. Unfortunately, The Science of Sleep suffered from being constantly compared to Eternal Sunshine. However, it’s a terrific movie that deserves far more attention from current audiences.

‘Pan’s Labyrinth’

Pan’s Labyrinth finds director Guillermo del Toro in full command of his craft. Set in Francoist Spain, the film follows young Ofelia (Ivana Baquero), who moves in with her pregnant mother to the countryside at the best of her new stepfather, the sadistic Captain Vidal (Sergi López). There, Ofelia stumbles upon a labyrinth where she meets a faun (Doug Jones) who reveals her backstory as the princess of a magical realm. If she wants to return there, Ofelia must pass three trials.

Widely considered del Toro’s magnum opus, Pan’s Labyrinth is a beautiful examination of how fantasy can help us cope with the cruel realities of life. The director does not pull any punches in depicting the haunting allure of his dark fantasy world, with incredible creatures and an eerie, striking production design. The highlight is, of course, the Pale Man, whose six-minute sequence is arguably the crowning jewel of del Toro’s impressive career. However, it’s all in service of a poignant tale about the power of imagination, and how it might very well be our strongest tool to thrive in this ruthless, unforgiving world.
