Manchester Airport confirmed this is due to a technical issue at National Air Traffic Services’ (NATS) control centre in Prestwick, Scotland.

The issue affected airports across northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and follows a separate NATS outage earlier this month that led to more than 2,000 flight cancellations.

A Manchester Airport spokesperson said: “An air traffic control system operated by NATS has been affected by a technical issue causing delays to flights from some UK airports.

“Passengers due to travel today are advised to keep an eye out for updates from their airlines.”

The airport later confirmed that the air traffic control issue has been fixed but said some flights still may be affected.

EasyJet, KLM, Aer Lingus and Ryanair were among the airlines cancelling services from Manchester, including flights to Belfast, Amsterdam and Brussels.

Industry leaders and airlines criticised the repeated failures and called for urgent improvements.

Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, said: “Yet another NATS failure is causing delays and disruption for passengers and airlines alike, and comes just days after its report into the most recent major outage.

“Passengers and airlines deserve better and the independent CAA report, together with the forthcoming Civil Aviation Bill, must address the underlying weaknesses in the system so that these failures stop happening.”

EasyJet said: “This, once again, calls into question the resilience of Nats’ systems and demonstrates the need for firm actions to prevent these repeated failures.”

Steve Heapy, chief executive of Jet2, said: “It is simply not good enough for this critical national infrastructure to keep letting customers down.

“Customers work hard to look forward to their holidays and airlines work hard to deliver those holidays.

“What customers and airlines need now is action, accountability and proper resilience, and we need it urgently.”

Ryanair called for the resignation of NATS chief executive Martin Rolfe.

Neal McMahon, chief operations officer for Ryanair, said: “Martin Rolfe has presided over repeated system failures, repeated passenger disruption and repeated failures to deliver an effective back-up system.

“Enough is enough.

“Martin Rolfe should resign today.”

Passengers at Manchester Airport faced delays and cancellations throughout Monday.

Among the affected flights were easyJet’s 7.10am to Belfast and 11am to Amsterdam, KLM’s 11am service to Amsterdam, and Aer Lingus’ 12.40pm to Belfast.

Ryanair’s 8.30pm service to Brussels was also cancelled.

Delays ranged from 40 minutes to more than three hours.

Greater Manchester Police and Wigan Council worked together to obtain the order against an address on Poplar Street.

Police said the property had been the subject of ongoing concerns and reports from people living in the local community.

GMP said the case related to “many years of anti-social behaviour, drug related incidents, criminal damage at the property” and a “deterioration in the quality of life” of residents living in and around the area.

The force said the problems had had an impact not just on the property itself but on a number of people living nearby.

A closure order is a legal measure which can be used where premises are associated with nuisance, disorder or criminal behaviour.

Wigan and Leigh Police announced the successful order on Facebook, saying it demonstrated the value of agencies working together to tackle problems raised by residents.

The police page said: “The order follows ongoing concerns and reports from the local community regarding activity linked to the property, which was having a significant impact on nearby residents and the wider neighbourhood.

“This result demonstrates the value of partnership working, with agencies coming together to listen to community concerns, gather evidence, and take positive action to improve the quality of life for those living nearby.”

One of the passengers believed that the driver wanted to ‘show off’, an inquest heard

A teenage boy died after driving a car at an “inappropriate speed” and ending up “fully submerged” in a river, an inquest has heard. Declan Berry and four other teenagers, aged between 16 and 18, were in the car when it entered the River Nene in North Brink, Wisbech St Mary on March 17.

The body of Eden Bunn, 16, from Sutton Bridge, was recovered the following day. The car, a VW Polo, was later recovered from the river. The three other passengers were able to escape the vehicle.

Police were called to Crab March in Wisbech by a local river official on March 31 and a body recovered there was confirmed to be teenager Declan.

An inquest into Declan’s death was held on Monday, September 21 by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Area Coroner Elizabeth Gray.

Detective Constable Les Ellmer said in court that the vehicle had rolled and entered the river when it became “fully submerged”. One front seat passenger and two rear seat passengers exited the vehicle.

The vehicle was registered to Declan, who had a full driving license and three penalty points. Evidence heard in court revealed the road, which has a 60mph speed limit, had “numerous potholes” and “uneven surfaces along its length”. There had previously been more than 100 reported complaints regarding the condition of the road on North Brink. Works were due to take place to repair the road but subsequently took place following the collision, according to evidence.

The front seat passenger had met the other occupants at a McDonald’s. Witness evidence explained that the front seat passenger believed Declan wanted to “show off”. The passenger reportedly noticed Declan was driving at around 90mph prior to the collision. They said a pothole possibly caused the vehicle to “suddenly lose control”. They heard Declan say “Oh Sh**” before the collision.

A rear seat passenger said the group had driven around Wisbech and met the front seat passenger at McDonald’s. All occupants were wearing seatbelts except one of the rear seat passengers.

A witness statement from one of the rear seat passengers read out in court said there was no music playing which they felt was “unusual”, adding that the atmosphere felt “eerie”. The witness statement explained that the passenger did not express concern of the speed and was “accustomed” to Declan driving fast.

A second rear passenger said they recalled the vehicle “flipping” and “rolled” before entering the river. At one point, the witness believed they “may not be able to escape”.

A nearby local named Thomas, who was adjacent to the River Nene, said he heard a “loud impact”, describing the vehicle as “rolling through the air”. He contacted emergency services and located three of the occupants.

A post-mortem examination determined that Declan’s cause of death was drowning. Coroner Gray concluded that Declan died as a result of a road traffic collision.

The vehicle’s speed was deemed the “most significant” contributory factor, with the presence of potholes acting as another contributory factor. Coroner Gray said the car had been driven at an “excessive” and “inappropriate speed”. The inquest heard that had Declan been driving at a reduced speed, it would have been “unlikely” that the loss of control and rollover would have been so severe.

CNN, Politico and MS NOW have said they will sue the Trump administration after the three US media outlets were barred from the White House.

President Donald Trump announced the ban on Friday, accusing the organisations of writing “fiction or lies” about his team. The companies said their reporters were denied access to the building on Saturday.

In a joint statement on Monday, they said they were pursuing legal action to “defend the principle that the government does not decide what the press reports”.

Major US TV networks later announced they would suspend their White House pooled coverage of Trump, leaving a potential gap as he heads to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

The First Amendment forbids the government from “abridging” the freedom of the press – language that courts have traditionally interpreted as preventing the government from discriminating against the media based on the content of their coverage.

The statement from CNN, Politico and MS NOW said: “Without notice or process, the White House revoked our journalists’ credentials because it objected to our reporting.

“Left unchallenged, this threatens press freedom and the public’s right to independent journalism free from government interference.”

Posting on Truth Social shortly afterwards, Trump said the White House was not “instituting an assault on the Free Press” and that he was targeting “FAKE NEWS”.

On Monday morning, major US TV networks pulled out of White House pool duties, which sees media organisations share material with each other to save on finance and space when broadcasting presidential events to the American public.

Fox News Washington bureau chief Bryan Boughton, who currently holds a rotating role helping to organise media TV crews covering the White House, wrote in an email seen by the BBC that “effective today, the TV pool will not be covering designated as pool coverage” of President Trump.

The message said the move followed the White House “preventing” CNN from fulfilling its pool duties for Trump’s trip to New York and that “there will be no replacement pool put in place”.

CNN – one of only five US news outlets in the White House press pool for live television – was originally due to cover Trump’s trip to the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday and Tuesday.

But on Monday morning, the five-seat CNN booth in the basement of the White House press area – typically manned throughout the day from the early hours of the morning – was empty and closed. Screens and monitors inside were turned off.

Instead, a CNN crew was outside the secured area of the White House grounds, broadcasting live from a public pavement.

Five TV networks, ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC, issued a joint statement: “The public has a vital interest in receiving accurate, independent information about its government.

“No administration should restrict a news organization because it objects to its reporting.”

Those five networks are considered the only ones with the money and infrastructure to distribute live coverage from the White House and presidential events.

For now, the White House media slot has remained vacant and instead the conservative TV outlet, Real America’s Voice, was listed as “secondary” crew on Trump’s trip to New York, where he will meet Mayor Zohran Mamdani and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday.

Announcing his ban on CNN, Politico and MS NOW last week, Trump did not mention specific stories or reporting that prompted the move, but later said “it’s really just cumulative stories over the last few years”.

The US president added that there “may be others to join them”.

When later asked by a reporter what he meant by this, Trump responded: “Others to come in terms of fake news? Well, you know, the New York Times is fake news, the Washington Post is fake news.”

In February, the White House announced it was taking control of the press pool which has access to Trump and had for more than a century been managed by the White House Correspondents’ Association.

The same month, the administration moved to bar Associated Press (AP) reporters and photographers from spaces where access is limited, such as the Oval Office or Air Force One, because of the outlet’s usage of the term “Gulf of Mexico” instead of “Gulf of America”. AP filed a lawsuit and the case remains ongoing.

Trump has been frequently critical of news organisations and his administration has launched legal action against a series of outlets, including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and the BBC.

Some of the lawsuits have resulted in media organisations agreeing to pay multimillion dollar settlements. Trump’s lawsuit against the BBC is ongoing.

Police say a suspected bomb has been found at Falmouth Docks with two homes evacuated.

It reads: “Emergency services are responding following the discovery of a suspected unexploded ordnance device at Falmouth Docks.

“The item was located earlier today within the dock area and specialist Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers have been contacted and are en-route to assess the device.

“A 150-metre safety cordon has been established around the location, which takes in land and sea, while enquiries and assessment work are carried out. Two homes have also been evacuated.

“Members of the public are asked to avoid the area and follow the advice of emergency services and port officials. The Coastguard are also asking boat users to stay away from area.

“Officers are working closely with partner agencies, including the Fire Services, Port Authority and the Harbour Master to ensure the safety of the public.

“There is currently no information to suggest any wider risk beyond the established cordon. However, the public is urged not to approach the area or enter any restricted zones.Enquiries remain ongoing and updates will be issued when appropriate.”

The number of fixed energy deals offering a saving against the price cap has fallen into single figures as wholesale fuel prices rise amid continued disruption in the Middle East.

MoneySuperMarket Energy says the cheapest fixed deals are now only 2% below the October Energy Price Cap, compared with 14% in July.

The cheapest tariffs beat the October cap by just £31 on average, according to the latest figures.

The warning comes less than two weeks before the price cap rises by 3.9% on October 1, adding around £66 to a typical annual household bill and taking it to £1,729.

At the same time, wholesale oil prices have risen sharply, with crude oil at around $98 a barrel on September 21, after reaching $103 at the end of last week.

MoneySuperMarket says oil prices are now around 70% higher than at the start of the year.

Just four deals beat the October cap

Households looking to protect themselves from future price rises are being urged to compare fixed tariffs while cheaper deals remain available.

MoneySuperMarket says there are currently just four fixed deals beating the October price cap, while some industry forecasts suggest the January cap could rise significantly further.

The exact January figure is not yet known and will depend on wholesale energy costs and Ofgem’s eventual calculation.

MoneySuperMarket Energy expert Laura Hinton said: “The ongoing disruption in the Middle East continues to put pressure on wholesale fuel prices.

“As suppliers buy energy in advance, any easing in wholesale costs is unlikely to be reflected in bills immediately. With another Price Cap increase forecast in January, we recommend looking into fixed-rate tariffs. Locking in a fixed rate means you’re shielded from future price rises and gives you a clearer idea of what your energy costs will be for peace of mind and to make budgeting easier.

“We’ve already seen fixed tariffs become more expensive and the number of deals below the Price Cap shrink. The most competitive fixed deals can be withdrawn or repriced at short notice, so acting now could help households secure greater certainty over their bills this winter.”

Energy bills already higher than last year

The latest figures show energy costs remain 9.7% higher than a year ago and 58% higher than five years ago, based on Ofgem’s updated typical consumption values.

Households are therefore facing another increase when the October cap takes effect.

However, there will also be a temporary reduction in VAT on domestic electricity.

From October 1, VAT on domestic electricity is due to fall from 5% to 0% until March 31, 2027.

MoneySuperMarket estimates this could save a typical household around £45 a year.

The VAT reduction will also apply to customers who have already fixed their tariff.

This means households do not necessarily lose the benefit of the VAT cut by taking a fixed deal before October.

How much could switching save?

MoneySuperMarket says households could save up to £173 a year by switching energy tariffs, based on the median saving among customers who switched through the service in June 2026, excluding Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man.

The company also says its SuperSaveClub can provide a £10 reward when customers switch to an eligible deal.

However, the potential saving will vary between households depending on their current tariff, energy use and the deal available to them.

A fixed tariff also does not mean a household will pay exactly the same amount every year. The unit rates and standing charges are fixed, but the total bill still depends on how much energy is used.

With the number of tariffs beating the October cap already shrinking, households considering a fix will need to compare the full cost of each deal, including unit rates, standing charges, exit fees and the length of the contract.

Anti-migrant campaigner ‘Danny Tommo’ has accused Left-wing activists of sabotaging a boat he bought to help police the English Channel after it sank.

Daniel Thomas is founder of the Patriot Platform, a group of protesters he describes as ‘working-class men who are bricklayers, roofers and carpenters who build the house you live in, the roads you drive on’.

They have been involved in recent anti-migrant disturbances in Dover in Kent and his home town of Portsmouth earlier this month, the latter of which forced the city’s RNLI station to close.

Earlier this year the 37-year-old’s followers helped pay for a small rigid-hulled inflatable boat, called The Patriot, which was intended to be used to patrol the sea between England and France.

However, having posted about his team having access to the boat on social media site X in April, the vessel then sank in Littlehampton, West Sussex, weeks later.

Two months later Thomas launched a crowdfunding appeal to salvage the vessel and  suggested, without evidence, that it could have been a result of sabotage by his political opponents.

A video was posted on his YouTube channel with the title: ‘EMERGENCY: Left Trying To Seize/Destroy Our Boat – Need To Move It ASAP! #ThePatriot’.

He wrote: ‘I’m paying £400 myself, just need a little help with the rest if your able to! If you can help in any way, please support us right now. Every contribution gets the boat out and back into action.

‘This is our boat. Our future. Our resistance.’

The Times now reports that the vessel had got into problems due to mechanical issues at the mouth of the river Arun and began to sink in Littlehampton Harbour, where officials had to retrieve it. 

While Mr Thomas later collected it, the boat’s present whereabouts are said to be unknown and it has reportedly not been used by him since. 

A campaign on the website GiveSendGo, so far generating more than £20,000, shows Mr Thomas promising to use donations for ‘new boats and marine equipment for essential water-based operations’.

Money would also go towards fuel, accommodation and storage for the group’s ‘assets’, the appeal states.

Mr Thomas has previously shared on social media an invoice suggesting he was charged £1,775 by Littlehampton Harbour, including £738 for use of a recovery vessel. 

He posted a video of the boat on X on August 25 this year accompanied by the message: ‘”The Patriot” is about to receive a full makeover and will return stronger than ever, ready for the Patriot Platform.

‘Thank you to the lads who are about to make her sea worthy again.’

Mr Thomas previously served time in prison after being convicted of kidnapping and is a long-time associate of far-Right campaigner Tommy Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.

Father-of-four and roofing company director Mr Thomas has a military background, having served as a tank driver with the King’s Royal Hussars.

But his Army career was cut short, having been discharged on medical grounds before seeing any active service.

He has said that his violent past brought him to a turning point and forced him to recast himself as a Christian activist.

He was jailed for two years in 2016 after bursting into the home of Graham Page in Hayling Island, Hampshire, along with two accomplices.

The three men were armed with knives and shouted ‘you’re coming with us’ before punching the victim, pinning him against a wall and trying to force him from his home.

They had wrongly accused Mr Page of stealing £10,000 worth of drugs from them.

The Daily Mail has approached Mr Thomas for comment on the latest claims. 

The Met Office has said there could be “air frost” this week

The Met Office has forecast “chilly nights” in parts of the UK this week alongside possible “frost” in the air at times.

It comes as the UK is set to see a generally “warm” week, with temperatures climbing into the mid 20s in places. But the week will also see cooler snaps as well as some strong wind and heavy rain.

The Met Office said that Monday (September 21) will be dry, warm and sunny across southern parts of the UK, with light winds forecast. More clouds and some patchy rain will be expected in the north and west of the country, with temperatures reaching highs of 24C in the south and 22C in the north.

A cold front will move over the country across Scotland and Northern Ireland on Tuesday (September 22), bring a mix of cloud and sunshine to the country. Temperatures will be warmer in the south east, reaching 25C or 26C.

More changeable conditions are then expected to hit from Wednesday.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, Tony Wisson said: “The forecast becomes more changeable from Wednesday as a series of weather fronts move across the UK.

“There remains some uncertainty over the exact track of a frontal system on Wednesday which could bring a spell of heavy rain, particularly across eastern and southeastern Scotland, and potentially parts of northern and northeastern England.”

Mr Wisson continued: “We’re closely monitoring this development and would encourage people to keep up to date with the latest forecasts over the coming days. It’s likely that many southern areas will remain largely dry.

“It’s set to be a notably chilly night on Wednesday into Thursday, with a chance of localised air frost in some rural locations, as cooler air moves in from the northwest.

“Thursday should bring long sunny spells for much of England and Wales, though we’re also monitoring the potential for strong winds to affect the far northwest of the UK. Temperatures in London may reach around 22°C, but another cool night is likely to follow in the south.

“With watchpoints ahead this week, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the forecast as the week goes on.”

Alexander Brennan killed Brodie McGregor at her flat in Glasgow’s Springburn on August 26, 2024.

A thug who brutally murdered his partner in a frenzied attack was given a life sentence. Alexander Brennan, 54, killed young mum Brodie MacGregor, 23, at her flat in Glasgow’s Springburn on August 26 2024.

Brennan left Brodie’s face effectively hanging off after he repeatedly struck her with glass bottles in a scene a witness said would “stay with me forever”. Callous Brennan got rid of his blood-stained trousers and locked Brodie’s dead body inside her flat before dialling 999.

He then boarded a train to the Falkirk area where he told a friend’s partner “I just couldn’t stop.” Brennan, of Larbert, was found guilty today of murdering Brodie and was jailed for a minimum of 22 years.

Judge Lord Scott told him: “You murdered her when she was 23 – there were no victim impact statements but I am told about surviving siblings and a young child left without their mother. You brutally murdered a woman who offered no threat to you.

“A doctor described her injuries as ones seen in high velocity impacts or falling from a building. As she lay there for around an hour, conscious or unconscious, you took no steps to seek medical assistance which would have offered a slight chance that she would survive.

“You showed complete disregard to whether she lived or died.” The High Court in Glasgow previously heard that Brennan had fallen out with Brodie.

A taxi from Stirling dropped Brennan off at Brodie’s home around 1.35am and he went inside. Brodie dialled 999 around 4.35am, where she was heard to say on the call: “You attacked me.”

Officers attended Brodie’s home but were told by her that the call was a mistake and that she was safe in Brennan’s company. CCTV later showed the pair separately leaving the property and walking in the surrounding area before returning to the flat.

Around 9.41am, footage showed Brennan putting his blood stained trousers in a clothing bin near Brodie’s flat. He was seen to place a phone to his ear at 9.55am in a 999 call which lasted over 90 seconds.

When asked by the call handler if the patient was breathing, Brennan replied: “I don’t think so.”

Later in the call, the handler asked him what happened and he did not respond to the question. Paramedics quickly arrived at the flat but could not get in so the fire brigade were called to force open the door lock.

Witnesses found Brodie lying face down on the living room floor, surrounded by fragments of broken glass bottles. Prosecutor Alan Parfery asked detective sergeant David White what he noticed about Brodie’s mouth and he replied: “It looks like her mouth has been severed completely.

“Her face more or less was hanging off.”

The flat – which was in a state of disarray – was found to have blood in various areas. DS White said: “There was a lot of blood spraying which extended to the ceiling. This was one that stood out for me and will stay with me forever.”

Brodie was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene at 10.15am. Meantime, Brennan was on a train to Camelon in the Falkirk area where he visited the home of friend Robert McCallum.

Mr McCallum’s then partner Tina Marie Hatton, 46, told jurors that Brennan had “blood all over him” and she put his stained jumper in the washing machine. Miss Hatton asked what had happened and was told “I couldn’t stop.”

When asked by Mr Parfery if he gave an explanation for the comment or who he was referring to, Miss Hatton said: “He just mentioned Brodie and that she was a b****.”

Miss Hatton added that Brennan told her that he was “done.”

Hatton was seen on CCTV to go into a shop that day and the next day before his eventual arrest at an associate’s house in Stirling on August 28.

The blood stained jumper was seized from the washing machine and the trousers were recovered from the clothing bin. The blood on the garments was found to have come from Brodie.

A post-mortem examination carried out on Brodie after her death identified a total of 78 injuries to her head and body.

Doctor Julie McAdam, 54, stated that Brodie’s cause of death was “facial injures.”

The doctor added: “She had extensive facial injuries.

“There were a mixture of blunt force injuries, bruises, abrasions and lacerations.

“She also had severe sharp force injuries to her face, particularly her mouth.”

An injury which separated Brodie’s lips from her gumline, is one the experienced pathologist said she had never seen before.

Brodie was described as having two “bilateral black eyes”, which Dr McAdam said is seen in “high velocity injuries, people in road traffic injuries or seriously assaulted.”

It was further stated that Brodie had also swallowed a lot of blood which filled her lungs and airways.

Dr McAdam added that Brodie would have been alive for an hour after suffering her injuries and could have survived had medical assistance been sought sooner.

The advocate depute suggested a scenario that the face and head injuries could be explained by Brodie being struck with intact and broken glass and then being continued to be struck with broken glass.

Dr McAdam replied: “Yes.”

Mr Parfery told jurors in his closing speech: “In a stunning act of brutality he struck her with broken glass bottles multiple times.”

Brian McConnachie KC, defending, stated after the verdict: “As far as events are concerned, he has very little recollection.

“As I understand it, he has some recollection of an argument taking place but has unable through proceedings to accept total responsibility for what took place.”

It was revealed that Brennan has previous convictions for assaults which include to injury.

Family and friends flocked to social media to pay tribute to the mum following her death.

One wrote: “So sad. RIP Brodie, thoughts go out to her family.

Another said: “May her soul rest in peace and her family stay strong. My thoughts are with them all.”

A third added: “Poor girl, RIP sweetheart. My thoughts are with your family and friends.”
