Irish singer-songwriter and guitarist John Doyle will perform at Victoria Hall on Friday, August 28 from 7.30pm to 9pm.

His career spans over the past 20 years and includes collaborations with Joan Baez, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Irish fiddler Liz Carroll.

Doyle has also played alongside bluegrass musicians Tim O’Brien and Dirk Powell.

He was nominated for a GRAMMY for the album Double Play and played guitar on Eric Clapton’s latest album.

He is also a member of the Transatlantic Sessions band.

The Wall Street Journal said: “Doyle on guitar has risen to a level occupied by him alone.

“No one in Irish traditional music is a better guitarist than him right now.”

Earle Hitchner, writing for The Wall Street Journal and the Irish Echo, described his performance of The Arabic as “unforgettable.”

The Chicago Tribune praised Doyle as “A complete rhythm section all on his own,” while the Philadelphia News said he has “More talent than anybody deserves to have all to themselves.”

Tickets for the show are priced at £20.

The student died in hospital earlier this year

A Cambridge student died from “poisoning”, an inquest has heard. Eliot Golding, 20, died in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, on March 18, 2026.

An inquest was opened into his death on Thursday (August 20) at Vantage House in Huntingdon. Coroner Simon Milburn told the court that his cause of death, after a post mortem, was confirmed as “sodium nitrate poisoning”.

Mr Milburn adjourned Mr Golding’s inquest for an inquest in writing to be held in the week commencing October 19.

Alex McCarthy, 16, was one of five young people who died in the M9 road tragedy in the early hours of Sunday morning

The priest who presided over the funeral mass for a teenager who lost his life in the M9 collision paid his respects to the innocent family harmed in the head-on crash.

During Alex McCarthy’s service at the Holy Family Church in Askea, Carlow, Fr Tom Little remarked that a “tragic accident can happen in seconds”.

He recognised that a collision such as the M9 incident, which claimed five lives and left four injured, evokes a “deep sense of shock, anger, questions, regret and even a sense of disbelief.”

Alex McCarthy was amongst the five young people who perished after their group travelled in a high-powered BMW the wrong way along the busy motorway, striking a family heading to Dublin Airport during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Sisters Niamh and Alma Kinsella, alongside Ella Hendricken and a seven year old boy who were travelling in the other vehicle, suffered catastrophic injuries. All remain hospitalised, reports the Irish Mirror.

During his address earlier today/yesterday, Fr Little paused to offer prayers for the injured family, who were remembered during the prayers of the faithful.

He stated: “We come together in Holy Family Church, Askea, with heavy hearts and a deep sense of sadness.

“Conscious that lives have been lost, others have been injured, and families have been left to carry the grief that is so difficult to put into words.”

He added: “A tragic accident can happen in seconds and the result of it can last a lifetime.

“These types of accidents bring a deep sense of shock, anger, questions, regret, and even a sense of disbelief. Words cannot express the true feelings of our heart, so today is a day for compassion, prayer, and remembrance.”

We remember in our prayers those who have been injured and pray that they may make a good recovery. “Thanking God that they have survived. Thanking God for the emergency services, doctors, nurses and ambulance staff and all who care for the sick.”

His homily went on: “We remember those who have died to this world, knowing that each life is God’s great gift to each one of us, to be treasured and respected. Those who have died were loved by their family and friends.

“Their absence leaves a space that cannot simply be filled. We remember families on both sides of the accident to God in prayer. We are bringing today our human emotions of hurt, loss, confusion, sadness, responsibilities, in prayer to God.”

Recognising the profound effect the collision would have on loved ones, Fr Little urged people not to “carry sorrow alone”. He added: “For us who remain the journey ahead will not be easy. There will be moments of grief and sadness.

“As part of God’s family let us support one another. Let families not feel that they must carry their sorrow alone.”

Alex’s remains, placed in a baby blue casket, arrived at the church shortly after 3pm in a horse-drawn carriage. Those walking behind wore t-shirts bearing Alex’s image alongside the words “The Boss”.

As the casket was brought out, family and friends lifted it high, banging on the sides while cheering.

Several photographs of Alex were displayed outside the church, accompanied by a large screen showing images of the 16 year old. During the service, Alex’s grandmother Tina gave several readings – breaking down in tears at one point.

Following the service, Alex’s casket was carried from the church and once more raised aloft and struck. Sulkies were also present before his remains were transported to St Mary’s Cemetery for burial.

A substantial Garda presence was maintained throughout the proceedings. Numerous officers were stationed at roundabouts and on roads approaching the town.

Armed Gardai were also deployed in the vicinity. The other four teenagers who lost their lives are Joe Carthy, 15, Jack Kennedy, 17, Jeremy O’Brien and 17 year old Kamil Pustkowski.

Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie are ‘no longer speaking’ to each other, it has been claimed. 

A source speculated they have drifted apart in the years since Megxit, adding that the Duke of Sussex, 41, will likely find a much smaller social circle upon his return to Britain after six years in the US. 

They also claimed that Harry and Eugenie ‘did not see’ each other when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex travelled to Portugal this summer – despite being a stone’s throw from Princess Eugenie and husband Jack Brooksbank‘s home in the ‘Iberian Hamptons’. 

‘Harry and Meghan are not so close to Beatrice and Eugenie anymore, and Harry did not see Eugenie over the summer in Portugal,’ the source reportedly told Hello! magazine. 

‘Harry has very few friends left from before. They’re going to have to make some serious social inroads and gatherings to get back in the fold,’ the source added. 

Representatives for the Duke and Princess Eugenie did not immediately return the Daily Mail’s request for comment. 

It comes after news broke this week that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will be relocating to a private, non-royal residence outside London with their two children, Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five. 

The King was told of his youngest son’s return just three days earlier, on Sunday, while Harry’s brother, the Prince of Wales, was also informed in advance of the announcement. 

However, a source told the Daily Mail that William has ‘no desire whatsoever to reconcile with his brother as it stands’ after the fallout from Megxit, which saw Harry and Meghan make a number of damaging accusations about the Royal Family.

And it appears Harry’s royal allies are only dwindling if the new claims about his relationship with Eugenie – who recently welcomed her third child with husband Jack Brooksbank – are true. 

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail that the scandal surrounding Eugenie and Beatrice’s disgraced parents might have affected the cousins’ close relationship in recent years. 

‘Eugenie was always the closest to the Sussexes, visiting them, appearing in their Netflix series and they both have houses in Portugal,’ he shared.

‘However, Harry and Meghan won’t want to be too close to the sisters as they are far too controversial because of their disgraced parents. The Sussexes will keep their distance publicly, and they do excite worldwide interest,’ Mr Fitzwilliams added.

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe previously claimed there may be a ‘divide’ among the Sussexes on supporting Beatrice and Eugenie, adding neither Harry nor Meghan ‘will want to be associated’ with Andrew, 66, and Fergie. 

‘Harry has always been close to Beatrice and Eugenie,’ Mr Larcombe told The Mirror. 

‘They didn’t see a massive amount of each other growing up because they didn’t live very close to each other, but they’d always get together for Christmas at Sandringham.’

Mr Larcombe said that while Harry’s relationship with Beatrice and Eugenie might make him more inclined to look out for his cousins, Meghan, 45, will be more concerned about the optics of any ongoing association with the family.

Noting that Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and Harvey Weinstein were all photographed together at Beatrice’s 18th birthday, he added Meghan is likely to ‘keep her distance’ from them.

However, Harry and Meghan are probably united on the decision to steer clear of Andrew and Sarah – even if it’s for different reasons.

‘From Meghan’s point of view, it’s probably a commercial thing; from Harry’s point of view, it’s probably more of an emotional thing.’

Meghan already knew Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank before she started dating Harry – and in their 2022 Netflix documentary, released in December, it was revealed that Eugenie has spent time with her cousin Harry and his son Archie while in Los Angeles.

Eugenie became the first member of the Royal Family to publicly visit the Duke of Sussex in California, two years after he and Meghan stepped down as senior royals. 

The Duke and Duchess’s decision will have been a shock to the Royal Family, as sources insist it was not raised or discussed when Charles and Camilla hosted the Sussexes at Highgrove in early July.

While the King is understood to welcome the opportunity to spend more time with his grandchildren, there’s no doubt that the couple have burned some bridges – even before they left the UK on a ‘freedom flight’.

Rumours have swirled about a cooling of relations between Harry and his old party pals that began when he first met Meghan, and he is not on speaking terms with his brother William and sister-in-law Kate.

However, some childhood friends have stood the test of time and remain loyal to Harry – and indeed his brother too.

The Duke of Westminster as well as Charles and Thomas van Straubenzee may be among the welcoming committee, alongside trusted advisers such as Mark Dyer, the no-nonsense Welsh Guards officer who became a mentor to Harry after his mother’s death.

Meghan has always insisted that she knew very little about Britain and the monarchy when she got married, but she does have a circle of friends that dates back to before she met Harry.

These include PR guru Isabel May, who helped Meghan settle in on her first move to the UK and Soho House director Markus Anderson.

In January 2020, the Duke and Duchess announced they intended to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family, become financially independent, still support Elizabeth II, but split their time between the UK and North America.

The late Queen ruled at the famous ‘Sandringham Summit’, which was convened in Norfolk to resolve the crisis, that the couple could not be half in and half out.

By March 2020, Harry and Meghan had set up a permanent home in California, officially stepped down as senior royals and stopped using their HRH styles.

Ahead of their return to the UK, Archie and Lilibet have already been enrolled in British schools with terms typically starting in September. 

Meanwhile, Meghan is expected to continue to run her lifestyle brand, As Ever, from their new base – and the Sussexes are keeping their homes in California and Portugal.

There are currently no plans for either Harry or Meghan to resume their roles as working royals, which means they will remain as private ‘financially independent’ individuals. 

However, decisions about whether taxpayers will foot the bill for their security still remain unanswered, as does the exact reason for the couple’s decision to relocate.

The couple’s children will likely need a form of security given their high-profile nature, but Harry has faced a protracted legal battle with the Home Office over the security arrangements for him and his family while in the UK, after his level of protection changed when he stepped down as a working royal and moved to the US.

Harry’s return to the UK could cost taxpayers up to £5million a year – with Dai Davies, the Metropolitan Police’s former head of royal protection, describing it today as an ‘incredibly expensive’ scenario. 

The departure from the US had raised questions over what will happen to their nine-bedroom Montecito mansion, which they purchased for $14.65million (£10.7million) from Russian tycoon Sergey Grishin on June 18, 2020.

But the Daily Mail understands that despite the huge cost of maintaining the Montecito property and its grounds, Harry and Meghan have no plans to sell up.

The 14,563-square-foot home, known as ‘The Chateau’, sits on 5.4 acres of land and boasts a swimming pool, a tennis court and immaculate gardens.

They also own a £6.3million villa on Portugal’s idyllic Melides coast and are set to keep this too.

In the hope of defending their Premier League crown this year, Bruno Guimaraes and Christos Tzolis have been added to the ranks during the summer, while Ezri Konsa is expected to be presented to supporters before kick-off after finalising his £51million transfer from Aston Villa, though Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal’s are not done in the market amid links with a new winger. The Spaniard has a virtually fully fit squad to choose from, with William Saliba and Jurrien Timber the only key absentees.

BOSTON (AP) — The defense rested its case Friday in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial after eliciting more testimony about her mental state before she strangled her three young children.

Prosecutors then began calling rebuttal witnesses before attorneys make their closing arguments in the trial, which is likely entering its final days.

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the deaths of Callan, Dawson and Cora Clancy, who ranged from 8 months to 5 years old. They were found in the basement of the family’s home in coastal Duxbury, Massachusetts. Clancy jumped from a second-story window after strangling the children and remains paralyzed from the waist down.

Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, hasn’t disputed that she killed the children but says she should not be held criminally responsible because she had postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness linked to the stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes that follow childbirth. Prosecutors argue that Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, planned the killings.

Reddington sought to bolster that defense by having the jury hear from more of Clancy’s family members, who detailed her worsening mental health before the January 2023 killings. He also called a psychologist who met with Clancy after the killings.

Clancy’s mother, Paula Musgrove, described her daughter as a dedicated and loving mom whose mental health began declining in October 2022.

In a text message displayed to the jury, Clancy wrote: “Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick. Something is wrong.”

Musgrove also recalled a more alarming disclosure in December. Musgrove, Clancy and Clancy’s then-husband, Patrick Clancy, were in the couple’s kitchen when Clancy said she had to tell them something.

“She told us she had thoughts of harming the children,” Musgrove said.

Clancy’s former mother-in-law, Susan Clancy, testified that Lindsay Clancy begged for help in the months leading up to the killings. The jury was shown texts between the two in which Lindsay Clancy spoke about fears that she had developed a dependence on benzodiazepines, but couldn’t sleep without taking them.

Prosecutors argue that Clancy contrived to get her husband out of the house the day of the killings. They have attempted to show that while she was getting treatment for anxiety, insomnia and depression, she wasn’t suffering from psychosis.
