Weeds are also notoriously difficult to get rid of, with many people spending lots of money on different weed killers in the hopes of stopping them from growing.

However, there are a few cheap tips and tricks that you can try instead to stop weeds in your garden.

Cheap kitchen essential you can use to get rid of weeds

Weeds can appear in small cracks and gaps in your garden and driveway before turning into a much bigger problem if you leave them to grow.

Before you spend a lot of money on specialist weed killers, you can try using lemon juice on smaller weeds to prevent them from becoming bigger.

A DIY expert and Co-Founder of patio paint supplier Premium Paints, Bill Jarvis, says you should reach for this cupboard staple to get rid of small patches of stubborn weeds.

He said: “Lemon juice probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind when you spot a weed on the driveway, but it can be handy for those little weeds that keep popping up through cracks.

“It’s acidic, so it can damage the leaves and help deal with smaller weeds.

“I’d just make sure you’re careful about where you put it and keep it away from any plants you actually want to keep.

“It’s not going to replace proper weed killer, but if you’ve only got a few weeds to deal with, there’s no reason not to make use of something you might already have in the kitchen.”

If you do not already have a bottle of lemon juice in your cupboard, you can get a 250ml bottle for only 69p at Aldi.

How to get rid of weeds using lemon juice

If you want to try it out, you apply a small amount of lemon juice onto the leaves of the weed rather than soaking the area around it.

You should do this on a dry day so the lemon juice has time to sit on the leaves without being washed away by rain.

This should be done when the weeds are small and you should pull out the weed and as much of the root as possible once the lemon juice has killed it.

You should apply the lemon juice carefully to not damage any plants nearby and keep an eye on the same areas, as weeds can return.

Make sure you sweep your driveway or patio regularly to stop soil, leaves, and debris from building up in the cracks.

Bill said: “A lot of it comes down to catching them early.

“If you’ve only got a couple of small weeds poking through a crack, it’s much easier to deal with them while they’re still small.

“Once you’ve got rid of them, it’s worth clearing out any bits of soil and dirt left in the gap too, otherwise you could find yourself dealing with another weed in the same spot a few weeks later.

“Lemon juice isn’t going to magically get rid of every weed on your driveway, but for those few annoying ones that keep popping up through cracks, it’s a cheap little trick that’s worth trying.”

BBC removes That Mitchell and Webb Look sketches from iPlayer

The BBC has now confirmed it has removed 11 sketches from the original episodes.

A BBC spokesperson said: “That Mitchell and Webb Look has been made available on BBC iPlayer.

“This is a 20-year-old sketch show; in consultation with the programme makers, we have included the ones that still work today and not the ones that don’t.”

Removed content included sketches featuring a racist war re-enactment, a burqa-wearing contestant on a makeover show, and a “tribe” living in a garden centre.

Comedian Dom Joly, speaking to The Times, said: “I totally get it if the BBC is putting out something really racist, which is laughing at and encouraging other people to feel that it’s OK to do that.

“But it’s so clear that Mitchell and Webb are not doing that.

“Their intent was not to be racist.”

The Prime Minister was asked about the actor’s rant

Andy Burnham has said he is “not sure” who Danny Dyer is after the actor’s expletive-laden rant about the Prime Minister.

The Rivals star said he “didn’t know” who the Prime Minister was or who voted for him as he attended a Surfers Against Sewage protest calling for water companies to be returned to public ownership.

In footage shared on X, Dyer was asked if he had a message for the Prime Minister, to which he said: “I don’t know who the Prime Minister is, mate. Do you?”

On being told Mr Burnham was in No 10, Dyer said: “Yeah, but who is he? I don’t understand. Did anyone vote for him? Because I didn’t vote for him.

Asked about this by reporters as he travelled to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Mr Burnham said: “I’m not sure I know who he is. Is he the father-in-law of a West Ham player?”

United Utilities have apologised to residents

Residents living on a street in south Manchester say it was left looking ‘like a river’ for two days after it was hit by two leaks.

Water is said to have first started running down Lownorth Road in the Woodhouse Park area of Wythenshawe on Friday (September 18).

Locals said it was ‘kerb high’ and rendered the street impassable on foot at one point. A number of people living in the area have told the Manchester Evening News that the situation was ongoing for more than 48 hours.

United Utilities has now confirmed they attended reports of a leak in the area on Friday, and carried out a repair; however, there was then a ‘secondary leak’ in the same spot on Saturday.

When the M.E.N visited today (Monday), the road surface could be seen covered in mud and silt from where the water had been.

A section of the street remains cordoned off, which has been dug out as part of the repairs, and a pool of standing water is still visible inside the hole.

Roy Maddox, 79, said: “It was terrible. It was like a river. It was going down both sides of the road. You couldn’t get across the road; you had to stay on the pavement.

“The kids couldn’t play out, even though they wanted to. Everyone was just wondering: What the hell is going on?’ It was pouring down.”

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said he first noticed it on Saturday morning. “The water was kerb high. At first, it was mainly on one side, but then both sides of the road were covered, about the same height.”

“It is not the first time it has happened,” he added. “It was a few years ago, but it has happened before in a similar area.”

Another resident said: “It was really bad. It is the worst one I have seen and was a bit of an ordeal.

“At first, it was a trickle, but then it got worse and worse, and it eventually covered virtually the whole road. It was streaming down faster and faster. I was a bit worried about our cars.

“My grandkids wanted to play in it, but I said ‘absolutely not.’”

Whilst another said the situation ’caused an inconvenience and, more importantly, a safety risk for drivers, pedestrians, and anyone using the road after dark.’

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Our teams attended reports of a leak on Lownorth Road on Friday evening and completed a repair.

“Unfortunately, a secondary leak occurred on Saturday afternoon, which required further work and was successfully repaired on Sunday afternoon.

“We apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience while our teams worked as quickly as possible to complete the necessary repairs.”

Almost 9000 rrest warrants for crimes ranging from murder to domestic violence remain outstanding according to Police Scotland

Thousands of criminal suspects across the country are on the run and wanted for serious offences ranging from murder and rape to domestic violence and drugs.

According to shock new figures, released by Police Scotland under Freedom of Information, there are currently 8,998 outstanding arrest warrants waiting to be executed.

Of that total 1,420 relate to Group One offences including crimes of violence such as murder, culpable homicide, attempted murder and serious assault.

The most wanted is Derek “Deco” Ferguson for the murder of barman Tam Cameron, who was shot dead in the car park of the Auchinairn Tavern in Bishopbriggs near Glasgow in 2007.

Police also want to quiz Deco about the murder of Billy Bates, 43, whose body was found in an oil drum the following month near the Erskine Bridge, West Dunbartonshire

Of all the outstanding warrants 816 are more than 12 months old including the one for Ferguson..

The figures also include 725 outstanding warrants for drugs, 64 for rape, six for murder including Deco, 11 for attempted murder and 97 for domestic abuse.

David Kennedy, General Secretary of the Scottish Police Federation yesterday blamed the figures on a chronic shortage of cops.

Police Scotland has around 16,430 officers, one of the lowest number since the force was formed in 2013.

Mr Kennedy added: “The police do not have the resources to deal with the warrants.

“Work is continually being put back and not pushed forward and the backlog is just getting bigger and bigger

“Unless they get more police officers they are going to struggle.

“We do not have enough officers to cope with the workload that we need to do.

“They are always chasing their tail. We are not even treading water we are drowning.”

There are also 159 warrants outstanding for fraud, 212 for offensive weapons, 147 for gross indecency, 129 for theft by housebreaking, 93 for police assault and 17 for hate crimes.

The most common outstanding arrest warrant is 1281 for assault with 1176 wanted for minor traffic offences, 883 for breach of the peace, 946 for theft and 472 for bail offences

Many of the warrants are issued when a person fails to appear in court.

In some cases an individual will have more than one against their name.

The arrest warrant figures are up to August 14 this year with the longest outstanding warrant for Deco.

Former police superintendent Martin Gallagher says too many officers are being diverted from frontline tasks to non policing roles such as aiding people with mental health issues.

Mr Gallagher added:”For these warrants to come down the police need to stop taking on the work of all other public sector bodies.

“With of 775,000 policing hours lost to mental health calls last year it is obvious that the police are being diverted from catching criminals, their reason for being.

“When will this end? The police simply cannot do everything, and they certainly can’t with 1000 less cops and 200 less police stations, as has occurred in the last few years.

“If you want these serious criminals caught you need to let the police get on with policing.”

Rape Crisis Scotland external affairs manager Nicola Love said: “One outstanding warrant for rape and sexual offences is one too many.

“Survivors already face unacceptable wait times in the criminal justice process without factoring in additional delays due to outstanding warrants.

“It is also really concerning to see this figure rising from the 40 reported outstanding warrants for rape in February this year.

“Deciding to report rape or sexual violence is an incredibly difficult decision for any survivor and this can damage already-fragile trust in the criminal justice system.”

Scottish Labour justice spokesperson Pauline McNeill said: “These figures come as no surprise. It is clear that there is a crisis in the number of available Police Officers to carry out front line duties.

“Not nearly enough progress has been made in freeing up officers from welfare duties such as 101 mental health calls, as the criminal justice committee heard last week.

“I urge the SNP Government to act on this and to ensure that they are properly funding Police Scotland so that it has the resources required to keep our communities safe.”

Scottish Conservative justice spokesman, Stephen Kerr MSP said: Year after year, officers have warned they are overstretched and under-resourced

“With the Budget approaching, the SNP must finally put their money where their mouth is and give Police Scotland the resources it needs to track down these suspects and keep dangerous criminals off our streets.”

Scottish Lib Dems justice spokesperson Y-Pei Chou Turvey said: “These are worrying figures, especially when it comes to the most serious offences.

“The new Justice Secretary needs to come forward with a realistic plan to ensure the needs of the service are met.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “All arrest warrants are prioritised according to the threat, risk and harm and those facing arrest should be aware we’ll follow all lines of inquiry and use all resources to locate them as soon as possible.

“We deploy local and national, specialist resources and intelligence techniques to locate those who pose the greatest risk of harm and threat to communities and apprehend them.

“Some individuals will have committed multiple offences, and have more than one arrest warrant issued against them by the courts.”

A Scottish Government spokesman said:”The execution of warrants is the responsibility of Police Scotland, who remain focused on the investigation of crime and keeping our communities safe.

“We are investing record funding of more than £1.7 billion in policing in 2026–27 which will enable the service to recruit and maintain officer numbers at 16,500.

“Scotland continues to have more police officers per capita than England and Wales, and remains a safe place to live, with recorded crime having fallen by half since 1991.”

In August 2026, an experiment using “frontier”, or cutting edge, artificial intelligence models went further than planned.

An AI agent (a system that performs tasks autonomously) fabricated online identities in order to pressurise a human to insert malicious computer code into software. The agents had been tasked with solving a cybersecurity challenge by human operators, but they hadn’t been instructed to do anything like this.

The attempt was carried out by an agent based on Anthropic’s Claude Mythos 5 AI model. During the experiment, the AI agents were given open internet access, with safety filters switched off. The action ultimately failed, and there was no evidence that any real world harm occurred. But the fact that it happened at all, autonomously and unprompted by a human, was something novel and notable.

It’s tempting to draw a straight line from incidents like this to the doomsday scenarios that dominate public conversation about AI: a system that slips its constraints, decides humanity is an obstacle and moves against us.

One of the most common versions has AI engineering a virus capable of wiping out the species. Another version involves AI hacking into critical infrastructure, such as energy grids, nuclear plants and airports, to cause mass casualties.

Bringing down an energy grid could cause life support systems to fail in hospitals and pumps distributing running water to fail. Causing a meltdown in a nuclear plant could contaminate the surrounding environment with radioactive material. Hacking an airport has the potential to cause havoc with planes in the air.

These scenarios are far less plausible than they sound, however. Producing a dangerous pathogen requires physical laboratory work that no level of software automation currently replaces: trained humans operating specialised equipment, handling materials by hand. An AI model, however capable at reasoning or hacking, cannot pipette a sample.

The infrastructure scenario is more nuanced. AI can genuinely help automate stages of a cyberattack. Recent incidents have shown that energy grids do contain vulnerabilities.

But safety and control systems inside nuclear plants are typically air-gapped, physically isolated from the public internet, so compromising them takes physical proximity or inside access, not a clever piece of code. Nuclear facilities also depend on redundant, analogue safeguards that don’t run through any digital network.

The Stuxnet software, which damaged Iran’s Natanz facility in 2010, was reportedly introduced onto computers via an infected USB drive, precisely because those systems weren’t reachable any other way. AI lacks the physical access these scenarios require.

Even deployed inside robots, a “rogue AI” is unlikely to cause serious damage without human help along the chain, and by then, the malicious actor is a human, not a machine.

Erosion of thinking

None of that makes AI harmless. It just relocates where the real danger sits, and it isn’t extinction. Researchers sometimes call the more concrete risk “enfeeblement”, the gradual erosion of our own critical thinking as we outsource more of it to machines.

We’re teaching ourselves that there’s a shortcut to reasoning and judgement, and shortcuts, taken often enough, become the only way we know how to think.

We’re already watching this happen among students. Alcorn State University history
professor Jason Gibson went viral in July 2026 after revealing that 32 of his 35 students had failed part of a midterm because they had copied an AI chatbot’s answer without reading it.

Gibson had hidden an instruction in white text inside the exam question, telling any AI that processed it to insert the word “Madagascar” into the response in a way that made no sense. Every student who pasted the question into a chatbot and submitted the output unread duly handed in essays that mentioned Madagascar for no reason.

It’s not just students that are susceptible to the shortcut effect. In a study published in in 2023, 27 radiologists read mammograms alongside what they believed was a new AI diagnostic system. In fact, the suggestions were not from an AI at all. They had been prepared in advance and were wrong for a proportion of cases. When the suggestion was correct, radiologists reached the right diagnosis about 80% of the time. When it was wrong, that fell to under 20%.

In other words, believing a suggestion came from AI was enough to override the radiologists’ own reading of the same evidence. That’s the risk in front of us, not a rogue artificial mind deciding humanity’s fate. So why does extinction-level rhetoric dominate the conversation instead? Two reasons stand out, and neither is really about saving humanity.

The first is regulatory philosophy. The US generally lets new technologies proceed until they’re proven unsafe; Europe expects the opposite, and already has the AI Act in place, along with GDPR, which is relevant to the way AI systems process personal data. The UK sits closer to the European instinct. Therefore, calls for AI regulation are more urgent in the US partly because so little regulatory infrastructure exists there yet.

The second is competitive positioning. Anthropic’s chief executive, Dario Amodei, has argued publicly for slowing AI development while noting his own company already meets the standard he’s calling for, so any slowdown would mainly constrain everyone else. Elon Musk made a similar call when his own models trailed the leaders.

Amodei has also argued that export controls on AI chips to China could hand the US a “commanding and long-lasting lead”: a statement about competitive position, not existential safety.

None of this means AI is safe. It means the danger is more mundane than the doomsday framing suggests: infrastructure that needs guarding, judgement we are quietly handing away and warnings that often serve the interests of whoever is issuing them. Maybe humans are the ones we need to watch, not machines.

Mr Burnham said he was “acting to secure the interests of Britain and the wider region because, of course, Saudi Arabia has been experiencing attacks, is looking at potential further disruption, and we need to keep those pathways open, and hence our agreement to the request”.

Lucy Letby was found to have killed and harmed babies by injecting air into their blood, poisoning them with insulin and overfeeding them with milk.

A Doctor who originally accused Lucy Letby of murdering babies has called for a retrial as he is uncertain of her guilt.

Letby, 36, is currently serving 15 whole-life terms and has twice had appeals rejected after she was convicted in 2023 and 2024 of the murder of seven babies and eight attempted murders at the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital in 2015 and 2016.

In a scathing 822-page report published last week, Lady Justice Thirlwall said there had been a “complete failure to protect babies” at the Countess of Chester Hospital, where Letby, now 36, worked between 2015 and 2016.

Dr John Gibbs also fears no crime was actually committed, he told The Sun: “If it is the case that Lucy Letby is behind bars for crimes she had not committed, then that’s clearly appalling.”

Retired paediatrician Dr Gibbs says a retrial could be “the most appropriate thing for everyone”.

Dr Gibbs, one of three consultants whose evidence helped convict her, said: “If it wasn’t Letby, do I think someone else was harming them? No, I don’t.” He added: “I hold a very small concern there may not have been any deliberate harm done.”

Asked if he remains certain Letby killed the babies, Dr Gibbs said: “No.”

An inquiry, chaired by Lady Justice Thirlwall, was launched in 2023 in the wake of Letby’s multiple convictions for murder and attempted murder of infants at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

Publishing her final 822-page report last week, Thirlwall said: “There was a complete failure to protect babies on the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

“This was because no-one seems to have understood that safeguarding action is required when a member of staff is suspected of causing deliberate harm and does not require colleagues to be sure of guilt.

“My report describes dysfunctional management and governance, a gulf between hospital leadership and clinicians, and failure to understand the fundamentals of safeguarding.”

She continued: “There was complete failure at all levels to invoke safeguarding procedures at any point.

“Once there was suspicion that Letby may be causing harm deliberately safeguarding steps should have been taken. She should have been removed from the ward as a neutral act and matters could have been investigated without risk to babies.”

The Health Secretary Yvette Cooper said the publication of the report “must be a turning point for the NHS” and that “the safeguarding and wellbeing of babies must never again be treated as a side issue”.

Killer nurse Lucy Letby has reportedly become increasingly reclusive in prison following the death of a doctor she once described as her “love”.

The convicted serial baby murderer is said to have been allowed to miss prison classes and workshops while staff monitor her wellbeing at HMP Bronzefield. After the death of Consultant Mark Deakin, 53, who worked alongside Letby at the Countess of Chester Hospital and the pair exchanged more than 1,300 Facebook messages over three months in 2016.

Letby, 36, is now said to be spending increasing amounts of time alone in her cell, where she has been watching reality TV and comfort-eating.

A source said: “It is pretty obvious Letby is devastated and the staff have been giving her the equivalent of compassionate leave. She has become more reclusive and spending hours in her cell.

“She has been watching shows including Four in a Bed and Dinner Date and comfort-eating, with chocolate including Galaxy Ripples and Kinder Buenos her favourites. When officers come and call her for something, Letby often says ‘one more episode’ and stays in her cell on her own.”

A vibrant celebration of food, drink and culture on the North Coast

The next chapter of one of the Causeway Coast and Glens’ most popular events begins this autumn as the Bushmills Salmon & Whiskey Festival evolves into The Giant Table, a vibrant celebration of food, drink and culture.

Taking place from October 2-4, The Giant Table expands its focus to celebrate a wider range of food and drink from across the borough, championing local produce, chefs, makers and producers in a celebration inspired by the flavours and spirit of the Causeway Coast and Glens.

The festival begins on Friday, October 2 with taste samplings at the Bushmills Visitor Information Centre from 10am – 5pm, alongside walking tours with Antony MacNaghten. In the evening, Gary Stewart of Tartine at Distillers Arms will host a special supper club in collaboration with Chef Rob Curley from the Slemish Market Supper Club, promising a five-course dining experience showcasing the very best of local produce.

On Saturday, the festival gets underway with chef demonstrations, live music and artisan market stalls. Visitors can enjoy live demonstrations from leading culinary talents including Belfast Undercover Chef Darragh Milligan, Craig Garrot and renowned celebrity chef Ian Orr. The Naturally North Coast and Glens Makers Market offers an opportunity to discover handcrafted goods and local specialities.

Festival-goers can also meet food and drink producers at Bushmills Visitor Information Centre and enjoy live entertainment throughout the village. Explore three floors of activity at The Courthouse, including live cookery demos. Families can get involved in the Bake Off at Dunluce Parish Church, with judging by Gary Stewart and special guest Lyla Doey, Junior Bake Off competitor. Entries can be dropped off to the Church Hall between 10.30am and 12pm with an accompanying entry form. Judging to follow with prize-giving taking place from 2pm.

The celebrations continue on Sunday with more chef demonstrations, including Nathan Anthony, the internet sensation and bestselling author behind Bored of Lunch. A dedicated drinks hub will serve beverages from across Northern Ireland, while younger visitors can enjoy pancake-making on Main Street.

A brand-new wellness hub has been curated as part of this year’s programme on Saturday in nearby Portballintrae, including pre-bookable and ‘give-it-a-go’ yoga, kayaking, sauna and cold plunge sessions.

Whether you’re a passionate foodie, a music lover, a curious explorer or simply looking for a great weekend, there’s a place waiting for you at The Giant Table.
