A killer who boasted that he had eaten parts of his victim with a plate of pasta has had his application for parole refused for a ninth time. David Harker, now 51, killed mother-of-four Julie Paterson, 32, in Darlington in 1998, and only some of her remains have ever been found.

Harker is currently serving a life sentence after admitting manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. It previously emerged that he had told friends and psychiatrists that he had fried part of his victim’s thigh and eaten it with pasta and cheese.

He has been eligible for parole since 2013, and a ninth hearing was held this month to determine whether he should be freed or moved to an open prison.

The Parole Board said it was still not considered safe to allow him to be released or to be transferred, based on the continuing need to protect the public.

Harker was 24 when he was sentenced in 1999.

Psychiatrists agreed he had a severe psychopathic disorder when he killed Ms Paterson, meaning he was not guilty of murder.

The Parole Board said the law required Harker’s case to be assessed regularly.

A report into his recent behaviour found that his behaviour in custody had “significantly improved”, with no disciplinary findings since 2015.

Previous decisions have been made using documents but the latest, ninth, heard oral evidence.

Harker did not attend or make representations.

The panel considered a dossier containing 356 pages of reports, including submissions on behalf of the Secretary of State arguing against release.

It heard from the person responsible for managing Harker in jail, two probation officers who would be responsible for managing him in the community, a psychologist and someone who worked with him on a programme in prison.

While the person who worked with him on the programme was not allowed to recommend a course of action, the others said Harker did not pass the test for release.

In its conclusion, a Parole Board summary of the decision said: “The panel carefully analysed all the evidence and formed its own independent assessment of risk.

“It decided not to direct the release of David Harker, nor to recommend to the Secretary of State that David Harker should be transferred to open conditions.”

A statement from Hampshire Police said on Thursday: “Just before 9am on Thursday, we received reports that a Lamborghini was in collision with barriers on the M3 southbound, close to the Minley Interchange. No other vehicles were involved and no injuries were reported.

“The driver, a 31-year-old man, from Berkshire, has been arrested on suspicion of driving a vehicle whilst unfit through drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C drug and failing to provide a specimen. He has been bailed while our enquiries continue.”

As reported by the Mirror, the footballer was eventually released on bail pending further investigation. Sterling has endured a very difficult few years when it comes to his footballing career. The winger enjoyed a successful period with Liverpool ahead of a move to Manchester City.

He won four Premier League titles during his time at the Etihad Stadium but was sold to Chelsea in 2022. Sterling spent just two seasons at Stamford Bridge before being loaned out to Arsenal where he scored just one goal in 28 appearances.

His remaining contract with Chelsea was ripped up in January, with the wide-man then moving to Dutch side Feyenoord.

He made just eight appearances, though, and did not score a goal. Speaking about Sterling after his final appearance for the club, Feyenoord boss Robin van Persie said: “Personally, I struggle with the cynicism surrounding him. I think respect is more appropriate. In any case, I don’t like cynicism. I can’t stand the whole atmosphere around him.

“Everyone has to know their place in that. And I think we sometimes go a bit overboard in the Netherlands regarding that.”

“He has scored 200 goals in England and played 82 international matches,” Van Persie added. “And that is regardless of whether you think he plays well or not. But I think the way we handle this as a footballing nation is really very bad.”

One person said a major A-road near the village is “too fast” and makes a lot of noise

Residents in a Cambridgeshire village say that it is brilliant with bus links “to die for” but there is a busy road that some say is “too fast”. The countryside village of Linton is home to over 7,000 people, according to the 2021 census.

It is a village complete with pretty houses and an array of different amenities, but some of its residents have mixed views on a busy road nearby.

Keith Comber, who recently moved from Cornwall to Linton, thinks that “it is a sweet village” with “lovely old houses” but thinks the A1307 nearby is “the only negative”, especially due to the “traffic noise”.

He said: “The traffic is too fast and there’s a lot of heavy, really big lorries.” Keith’s wife Jane added: “You have to really really check [when driving on the A1307]. I wouldn’t take my grandchildren near the road. I would love to take them that way because it’s beautiful by the church but I don’t want to take little ones down here.”

The village has a pharmacy, dentist, three pubs, multiple cafes and a Co-op. A lady called Rio said it has got “everything” and that her favourite feature is having a bus service that is “to die for”. She said: “The bus service from here to Cambridge is to die for. You can go to Addenbrooke’s and then into the city. It is absolutely great. What more could you want?”

John, who is looking to move to the village, thinks that the A1307 is an “asset” because it means locals can easily access Cambridge. He thinks the A1307 would worry him if he lived on it but Rio, who was with John, feels as though “at least it [traffic] doesn’t come through the village anymore”.

Julie Manning, 43, has run The Dog and Duck pub for 13 years. She said that running the business is “good fun” but it is a “tricky environment”. Overall, she is grateful that the village supports the local businesses and said the village offers a community where they “all look out for each other”.

She said that with potential plans proposed for new houses in the village, the A1307 will be “busier” but “the road is the road” and “sometimes it is the people who drive on it more than the road itself”.

A woman, who only gave her name as Jilly, said: “We wanted to move here because of all the facilities. We lived in a village that had nothing. No shop or anything, so it is great.”

Jilly, who has lived in Portugal, London and a nearby village previously, added: “People are very friendly and it has great access to Cambridge so it is brilliant. There is more going on. There’s a lovely poetry society.”

Grosmont in the North York Moors National Park has been branded “a picturesque North Yorkshire village” known for its dramatic scenery.

The village, close to Whitby, has long been a favourite with walkers, railway enthusiasts and visitors exploring the North York Moors, but more people are now discovering it as a memorable stop-off thanks to its historic station, traditional village feel and scenic walking routes – or that’s what people are saying online.

Much of Grosmont’s appeal centres around its railway heritage.

The village is the northern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, where visitors can watch heritage steam trains arriving and departing from the historic station.

And it’s this railway heritage that has featured on TV and films over the years, including Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone for some of the train scenes, as well as featuring in 2023’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

On TripAdvisor, one visitor described it as “a wonderful place to watch the steam trains and soak up the atmosphere.”

Another said: “It’s a lovely village with great walks, friendly people and a proper old-fashioned railway feel.”

Grosmont is not only a destination for train lovers.

Walkers frequently pass through the village on routes across the North York Moors, including riverside paths and trails linking Grosmont with neighbouring villages such as Goathland and Egton Bridge.

The popular Rail Trail between Grosmont and Goathland gives visitors the chance to combine railway history with countryside views, while the surrounding Esk Valley offers peaceful scenery throughout the year.

The village also has a rich industrial past.

Grosmont grew significantly in the 19th century after the arrival of the Whitby to Pickering Railway and the development of ironstone mining and ironworks.

At its peak, the ironworks employed hundreds of people, leaving behind a legacy of solid stone terraces, railway buildings and industrial heritage that still shapes the character of the village today.

Visitors often stop at the Station Tavern, the village shop or the local co-op after a walk or railway trip, while families gather around the station to watch the engines.

The village remains a working community as well as a tourist destination, with residents, walkers and day-trippers sharing its narrow lanes and scenic surroundings.

While access can be a little challenging due to steep roads and rural routes, many visitors say that it only adds to the sense of discovery.

One tourist said online: “It’s the kind of place you don’t just pass through, you stop, look around and stay longer than planned.”

Whether arriving by car, on foot or aboard a steam train, Grosmont continues to charm visitors with its history, scenery and unmistakable Yorkshire character.

The upcoming TV drama Moriarty will reimagine the iconic character as a criminal mastermind in the north of England.

In the series, Professor James Moriarty is cast as a professor of criminal psychology at Durham University.

He leads a double life as the architect of sophisticated crime across the north of England.

Kris Thykier, the Bafta-nominated producer behind the project, said: “We are thrilled to be working with Fremantle to bring to life the original and character-driven spin-off from the Sherlock Holmes universe that Chris Cornwell has created.”

When a new criminal threat emerges, Moriarty is forced to collaborate with the police as a consultant.

He uses this role to discreetly take down his enemy, all while keeping his identity hidden from law enforcement.

He is paired with detective Imogen Burrows, a no-nonsense officer from Yorkshire. Together, they become a formidable team, but the real danger to Moriarty turns out not to be his criminal rival, but Burrows’ growing suspicions.

Mr Thykier said the series will offer a “playful, dark, and thrilling dive into the psychology of villainy.”

Rebecca Dundon, Fremantle’s senior vice president of scripted content, said the concept had immediate appeal.

Ms Dundon said: “We instantly saw huge potential for a commercial, returning franchise that brings to life one of the more allusive characters in the Sherlock world.

Moriarty has yet to be cast, but the character has previously been portrayed on screen by actors including Jared Harris, Andrew Scott, and Donal Finn.

Jared Harris appeared as the villain in Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, Andrew Scott in Sherlock, and Donal Finn in Young Sherlock.

This new series arrives amid a renewed wave of interest in Holmes-related stories.

Other recent and upcoming adaptations include Young Sherlock and The Death Of Sherlock Holmes, the latter starring Rafe Spall and set to premiere on Sky.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty, wrote four novels and 56 short stories featuring the legendary detective.

The band are quick to celebrate their tour so far, with Gary telling the crowd: “Oh my god what an opener Southampton. It’s definitely time for us to say this not at the end but right now. Thank you all for coming and spending your Friday night with us.”

Howard then added: “We cannot belive its 2026 and we are selling out stadiums like this its incredible for us. Thank you for helping us live our dream.”

The tortured headmaster of Weatherfield High has sunk into a booze-fuelled depression after it came to light that his girlfriend Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon) had been sexually abusing one of his students, Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale). In return for not telling his family about how badly he was spiralling, Daniel agreed to let Jodie be his flatmate.

Maybe he should have asked the Platts for a reference.

As soon as Daniel’s son Bertie was ready to move back in and it was time for Jodie to move out, the scheming soap vixen concocted a dastardly plan to keep Daniel unstable and fragile enough to depend on her. She created an online persona called ‘Truthteller’ to troll Daniel and spread vicious gossip suggesting that he knew about Megan’s abuse the whole time. Worrie,David shares his worries with Maria Connor’s (Samia Longchambon), who advises him to come clean with Shona and tell her how Jodie reckons he called her by name. While Shona knows all about how Jodie tried to kiss David, she does not know all the details of the story… and there’s no telling how she will react.

A plane crash landed upside down whilst carrying two people who miraculously survived. The Tiger Moth, an aircraft used for pilot training during the Second World War, suffered a malfunction yesterday evening (May 28).

Emergency services were called to the scene at the Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Devon, shortly before 8pm following the crash landing. DevonLive reports locals Ashleigh Vaughan and his wife Dawn were out when they spotted the fire service in the area and later saw the upside-down plane.

Ashley said: “On research these biplanes are prone to flipping on landing if there’s a strong rogue wind. It appears that the plane had been landing on the runway and then flipped into the field.”

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told Devon Live: “At 7.49pm on May 28, we were called to attend an aircraft landing incident. A two-person Tiger Moth aircraft crashed whilst landing in a field adjacent to the runway at M35.

“The aircraft sustained damage and there was a reported oil and fuel leak. We sent two fire engines to the scene.

“The immediate emergency phase is complete. The scene is now under airport control for ongoing management and preservation.”

Two people were involved but neither was seriously injured, according to the fire service.

Its statement continued: “Both [occupants] were conscious and breathing at the scene and were able to exit the aircraft. Both have minor injuries only and were advised to self-present to hospital if required.”

The de Havilland Tiger Moth was designed in 1931 as a primary trainer for the RAF. During the following fifteen years, the DH.82 was to become the foremost training airplane flown by the Commonwealth’s military and civilian pilots.

It was one of several training aircraft that made an enormous contribution to the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. From 1938 to 1948, the RCAF employed more than 1,500 of these aircraft, which helped prepare pilots to fly Spitfires and Hurricanes.

It is not the first time a Tiger Moth has crashed at the airfield – in 2017 two people also escaped serious injury after crashing at Dunkeswell. A report found the crash was the result of pilot handling error.

The aerodrome opened in 1943 during the Second World War. It was built for the United States Navy, becoming the only US Naval Air Base in Europe.

From this site, American aircrews flew long-range patrols over the Atlantic in search of enemy submarines, operating aircraft such as the Consolidated Liberator.

The airfield played a vital role in protecting essential supply convoys crossing the Atlantic. Many of the original hangars and dispersal areas remain, standing as quiet reminders of Dunkeswell’s importance to the Allied effort.
