Arsenal had one final chance to sign a midfielder but now face stiff competition after the transfer window shut on Monday night and ended other hopes
Celtic are set to make a move for former Liverpool star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain despite Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta failing to rule out signing the midfielder. Oxlade-Chamberlain is currently without a club and has trained with the Gunners.
The Southampton academy product has been without a home since leaving Besiktas, after the Turkish side terminated his contract. An ex-Arsenal star, Oxlade-Chamberlain, has trained with the Gunners’ youth side and participated in a first-team session in January.
The England international’s future was thrust into the spotlight after Mikel Merino’s injury sparked the Gunners into making late enquiries over a new midfielder. Arteta was asked about the prospect of bringing Oxlade-Chamberlain further into the fold.
Arteta simply replied: “We explore every option.”
As a free agent, a move for the 32-year-old did not need to be completed by the transfer deadline. That would appear to give the Gunners more time to mull a decision.

But Celtic could yet take that out of their hands. Up against their own, later, transfer deadline, the Bhoys are interested, according to Sky Sports.
Arsenal appear to have not been able to find a suitable opportunity to replace Merino. The north London side were said to be interested in a loan deal.
In his press conference, when questioned about recruiting a new midfielder, Arteta said: “Of course. I mean, when you lose a big player like this in the squad with four months to go and all the competitions to play for, you need to look.
“We need to do everything that we possibly can to see if we have a player that is available. And if we don’t, we keep what we have.”
“At this level, especially for four months, you have to be a player that has the capacity to adapt immediately and impact the team. That’s not easy. But if it were easy, we wouldn’t be here. So, we need to find solutions and try.”
Pushed further, and asked if their summer spending would hamper prospects, Arteta added: “We have the responsibility to do that. It is true that we have done certain deals, but nothing different to the top clubs, I don’t think.
“We have to see where are the parameters. We have to have the options and then present them and then: is it possible, yes or no?”
He continued: “We are on it. It’s just the fact you want to make the right call with the right player because we really want to improve the team if we can. If not, we don’t do it.”
