David de Gea has made a decision on his future with the Fiorentina goalkeeper tipped to make a stunning return to Manchester United this summer
David de Gea has ‘made it clear’ that he’d only leave Fiorentina for a sensational return to Manchester United, it has been claimed.
De Gea, 35, left United in June 2023 after 12 years at Old Trafford. During that time, De Gea made 545 appearances, winning the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Europa League among other honours.
But the Spaniard departed United following the expiration of his contract, leaving as a free agent. There had been talk that he could return straight to action and move to Saudi Arabia, but the ex-Atletico Madrid goalkeeper instead spent a considerable amount of time out of the game. Indeed, De Gea did not sign for another club for more than 12 months – until August 2024 – when he made the move to Serie A side Fiorentina.

The Spaniard impressed during his first season in Florence, keeping 11 clean sheets and conceding just 50 goals in 42 matches. De Gea was rewarded for his fine performances with a new three-year contract at La Viola.
However, De Gea endured a mixed 2025/26 and there is talk that he could quit Fiorentina this summer. Indeed, according to Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb, La Viola are ‘ready to listen to offers’ for De Gea, who has made it clear that the only club that he is prepared to leave Florence for is United.
De Gea was linked with a shock return to United last summer, following an impressive performance during a pre-season fixture at Old Trafford. With Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana battling for the No.1 shirt at the time, ‘discreet background checks’ were made on De Gea ahead of a potential return.
But United ended up signing Senne Lammens, and De Gea remained at Fiorentina. Fast forward almost 12 months, and the Reds could be in the market for a second-choice to Lammens, who enjoyed a stunning first season at United, as both Bayindir and Onana are expected to leave the club this summer.

After De Gea’s return to United last summer, he spoke about how “emotional” it was to see the supporters again, having not had a chance to bid farewell upon his departure three years ago.
“It’s a game I’ll never forget, for sure,” De Gea said, after United and Fiorentina played out a 1-1 draw last August. “Sometimes it’s difficult to describe with words how you feel on the pitch, seeing the crowd, with everybody there. It was so emotional for me.”
