French police stand and watch as months-old baby is carried aboard a packed dinghy headed for Britain

French police did nothing more than watch as a baby and toddlers were carried aboard a dinghy to England.

Dozens of migrants clambered aboard the boat in the waves as tourists enjoyed lunch on the beach yesterday.

The youngest hauled aboard was a baby who appeared to be just months old. There were a number of other young children and women, too, alongside mostly young men.

Police apparently threatened to arrest the photographer who captured the images of French officers standing by as babies and toddlers were dragged on to the dinghy from the sea by their arms.

The migrants motored off and were picked up in the middle of the Channel by a British Border Security Command vessel and taken into Dover.

The group of migrants were just a small portion of the 2,092 who have already crossed the channel since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister just three weeks ago.

Remarkably, they were boarding a small boat the French authorities had closely tracked for nine-and-a-half hours – and simply let it be – as it picked up multiple groups of passengers along the French coast.

The dinghy appears to have been launched near Dieppe at around 4am.

This is far further south than from where boats usually leave, but people-smugglers are using new launch spots away from regular police searches.

Soon after setting off it was followed by a French coastguard vessel – but only in case of a sinking.

After 40 miles it pulled in alongside Berck beach, then 12 miles further north it approached Camiers beach at around noon, where photographer Ioannis Alexopoulos saw the youngsters taken on board after groups of migrants had emerged from the dunes.

Mr Alexopoulos said: ‘Three police turned up, gendarmes in military clothes – but all they did was film, and threaten to arrest me if I kept taking pictures.’

This comes as the Daily Mail revealed that sporting goods stores in the northern French towns of Calais and Dunkirk have become key to the operations of gangs smuggling people into Britain.

Migrants appear to be buying up lifejackets en masse from the retailers, with the flimsy, €17.99 (£15.40) garments offering little protection against the perilous crossings they are set to undertake.

This, however, is only the last step in a vast international supply chain spanning all the way to China, which is profiting off migrants’ desperation, misery and suffering.

Last week it was revealed that the average number of migrants crammed onto small boats has more than doubled over five years to a record high under Labour.

Analysis found 66 migrants on average were packed onto each of the 219 vessels which have successfully crossed the Channel so far this year. They were carrying 14,561 migrants in total.

This was up from an average 28 per boat for the whole of 2021, when 1,064 vessels carrying 28,526 migrants made it to the Kent coast.

It was also an increase from the average 62 arrivals per boat last year and 53 in 2024.

The findings come amid a surge in the use of so-called ‘mega-dinghies’ capable of carrying more than 100 people as people smugglers shift their tactics.

Experts said it was likely because smugglers are starting to launch more boats away from Calais and Dunkirk, where distances between the French and UK coastlines are much greater. This means larger and more powerful boats capable of travelling further are needed.

Former head of UK Border Force, Tony Smith, said: ‘These mega-dinghies are clearly built to carry many more migrants than the original business model.

‘That suggests the crime gangs in Europe have moved towards manufacturing larger boats because the French authorities have at least done something in Calais and Dunkirk.

‘It’s much harder now to launch from some of those beaches that we’ve seen in the past.

‘They’re now moving further down the French coast, and the crime gangs have said we don’t need loads of small dinghies anymore because that’s going to be quite difficult to get people across.

‘They’ve probably needed to start manufacturing larger vessels capable of travelling longer distances and carrying more migrants.’

In recent weeks, a new record was set for the number of migrants reaching Britain in one day.

Official Home Office figures showed there were 752 arrivals on July 30, smashing the previous high of 710 set in June.

And last month, two boats carrying 128 and 165 migrants respectively made it across the Channel, both smashing the previous record for the most-packed vessels to successfully make it to Britain.

At least 14 UK-bound migrants have died in the Channel this year, either by drowning or through suffocation aboard overcrowded small boats.

After previous Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer won the 2024 election, he ditched the Tories’ Rwanda deportation plan and instead focused on ‘smashing the gangs’.

In April, as part of the strategy, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood signed a £662million deal over three years with France to crack down on crossings.

But while crossings are down 40 per cent compared to last year, Labour has failed to stop the boats completely.

And more enforcement in concentrated areas appears to have caused smugglers to try and launch boats from further away on the French coastline from Calais and Dunkirk.

New premier Andy Burnham faced criticism after gaining the keys to Downing Street last month and failing to mention the issue in his maiden speech.

It took him two weeks to visit Dover after he prioritised announcements on capping bus fares, slashing VAT on energy bills and unveiling his No10 North, which critics have branded a ‘gimmick’.

Calais was previously known for one such settlement, nicknamed the ‘Jungle’, which at its largest housed around 8,000 migrants – but was cleared by French authorities in 2016.

Around 700 migrants are still sleeping rough in the city, according to charity Care4Calais, whose possessions are often seized by police determined to stop another long-term camp forming.

And the port city of Dunkirk has become a similar hotspot, with thousands of asylum seekers living in tents in the Grande-Synthe and Loon-Plage areas of the city.

Facing an indeterminate wait for a crossing they have likely paid extortionate sums to traffickers for, the migrants often need to be prepared at a moment’s notice.

To do this, they seem to have been turning – of all places – to the sporting goods chain store Decathlon.

One branch in Dunkirk is in a retail park in the heart of the city’s Grande-Synthe suburb, an inland industrial area just off the motorway, to the west of the harbour and port.

Migrants living in the area, on arable and wooded land next to the busy D601 road, are understood to often catch the bus to the store.

When the Daily Mail visited this week, men, women and children could be seen walking from a complex of tents along the highway to reach a bus station outside a nearby shopping complex.

There, they appeared to buy essentials like food – many were seen walking back with large bags of baguettes – or travel onwards on the bus roughly 5km (three miles) to the Decathlon store.

Indeed, it was at a bus stop across the road from the chain sports shop where two people who appeared to be migrants could be seen waiting with lifejackets.

Rather than arriving by car – like most visitors to the retail park the Decathlon store is in – the men were on foot, buying only the buoyancy aids and no other gear before heading off.

Outside the front entrance to the shop, the Daily Mail spoke to another two men who had each purchased around a dozen lifejackets inside, which they had stowed in grey bin bags.

The pair, from Iraq, who wished to remain anonymous fearing for repercussions from the British government, confirmed they were set to use the vests to take a small boat to the UK.

When asked, ‘Did you buy lifejackets in there?’ and, ‘Is it for a boat crossing? Are you going to be on a boat to the UK?’ they simply responded, each time, ‘Yes’.

One man, who said the pair had waited with their relatives in France for two months to be able to cross, added: ‘We are with our family. These are not all for me!

‘We’ve had a long journey to get here. We’ve travelled a long way.’

The man wished our reporter a nice day before saying goodbye. It was sobering – while her day would carry on, his, with a perilous boat crossing imminent, might end quite differently.

It also suggested migrants appear to have to buy their own buoyancy aids – and that they are not covered by their extortionate crossing fares.

Another man was spotted leaving the store with at least ten lifejackets. Like the Iraqi men, he had come prepared, bringing bin bags to carry them in.

He was seen packing the vests just inside the exit from the store, before tying the bags together and slinging them over his shoulder. When approached by the Daily Mail, he did not respond.

A group of three other men were also spotted carrying similarly sized bin bags across the car park away from the store.

Purchases appeared to happen in waves – perhaps in line with and reactive to when a particular crossing was planned.

Indeed, over the three days the Daily Mail visited the Decathlon store in Dunkirk, all lifejacket transactions witnessed happened on a single day and in quick succession.

Inside the shop, there is plenty of choice – the shelves in the water sports section are full of orange lifejackets, immediately recognisable after years of migrant-related headlines.

Racks on racks – along with a large bin, sitting under a print of an ominously enormous wave – offered a range of sizes, with a high proportion designed for babies, of only 10 to 15kg.

Starting at just €17.99 for the most basic design – little more than polyester-bound foam – the aids ranged in price up to €89.99 (£77.20), for the most sophisticated gas cylinder-powered model.

Various combinations of whistles, additional straps and reflective patches saw other designs offered for €19.99, €29.99 and €34.99.

It was these mid-range versions which most often appeared in purchases witnessed by the Daily Mail. Buying ten, for example, might therefore set you back several hundred euros.

The gas-powered vests, meanwhile, were priced higher, at €54.99, €55 and €79.99 as complexity increased – with some even labelled as ‘tested and validated by French Lifeguards’.

Rich House, Poor House star reveals who really pays for huge budget and filming secrets

Published

on

Daily Mirror

A former star of Rich House, Poor House, has given a huge insight into how the Channel 5 programme is filmed and revealed where the often huge budgets come from

A star of Rich House, Poor House has revealed who really pays for the huge budgets. The Channel 5 programme explores the major wealth divide between people across the nation.

Two families from opposite ends of the scale swap lives for seven days, with one family thrust into a world of luxury they had dreamt of, while a wealthier family finds themselves tackling life on the breadline.

Each family swaps budgets and houses, with their lives being completely transformed. The show follows one family that ranks among the top ten wealthiest households in Britain and another from the bottom ten per cent to find out whether money can actually buy happiness.

Now, series five, episode one star Terri-Ann Nunns has revealed what really happens when the family exchanges cash. Terri-Ann, from Doncaster, swapped her five-bedroom house for a council house on the other side of the town in South Yorkshire. But it wasn’t a far cry for the businesswoman, who revealed she had grown up in a council house and admitted that she at times struggled financially. Eventually, she turned her life around and had a weekly budget of £1,200 after promoting her diet and lifestyle business which helped her lose seven stone.

Speaking on Instagram, the businesswoman said: “When filming Rich House, Poor House, does our budgets come out of our own pocket, or does it come out of the film production company’s pocket? That’s a question I’ve just been asked, so I’m going to answer it.”

She went on to add: “We tell them our budget, we show them obviously all our banks, and bank statements, and everything of what we, we pay out, and what we do in things.

“Then the production company actually provide the money to the other family, and vice versa. So we don’t actually have to pay our own hard-earned money, and, obviously, vice versa, they don’t have to pay their hard-earned money.” Terri-Ann went on to explain that after swapping houses and lifestyles, both families still have access to their own internet banking and bank cards, should they need them.

“However, for me, it were like, ‘Why would I want to, use my own money?’ When I’m doing this for a reason?’ I’m doing it for an experiment for my children. I grew up on a council estate. I grew up with nothing.

“For me, it were a doddle, I’ve been a single mum in a two-bedroom flat with two children.” Terri-Ann revealed the reality of her life before she amassed her fortune, explaining that she found the show “easy” and wanted to take on the experience with her children, who had grown up in a life of luxury.

“Don’t get me wrong,” Terri-Ann said, adding: “My oldest daughter did because obviously she were with us when we were in a two-bedroom flat, when we had to live with my mum, when I had to go bankrupt. But the younger two, they’ve never, obviously, they’ve, they were born when my business was hugely successful.”

While Terri-Ann’s business raked in £500,000 each year, which even helped her purchase Kylie Minogue’s old Range Rover. However, years after appearing on the show, her world crumbled following the collapse of her business and her marriage to husband Michael.

But since then, Terri-Ann has documented rebuilding her career for her social media followers.

Migrants PARAGLIDE into Ceuta – with one killed after crashing into the sea – amid fears another ‘invasion’ has been planned

Published

on

A migrant was seen attempting to paraglide into Europe just a day after another died while attempting the same stunt

This is the moment a migrant paraglides into Europe from north Africa – a day after another died trying the same stunt.

Police were still searching for the sub-Saharan man today after he vanished shortly after landing at the Benzu viewpoint in Ceuta close to its land border with Morocco.

Spanish cops said today people smugglers charging migrants to make the risky air crossing were being given courses lasting just a few minutes instead of the 80 to 100 hours of training normally considered appropriate before risking their lives taking to the skies.

Diego Madraza, a spokesman for the AUGC Civil Guard union, said: ‘They have no flight training, sometimes they are given a course lasting barely a few minutes before taking off.

‘Recently in Morocco, a gang that trained migrants in this type of entry using paragliders was dismantled.

‘As soon as one door closes on them, another opens, so now detection can no longer be only be sea or land, but it can also be aerial.’

Footage of the new paraglider crossing on Saturday evening emerged a day after a man drowned in a failed attempt to reach Ceuta, and ahead of a feared new invasion of Spain’s North African enclave following the mass border breach late last month when an estimated 72,000 migrants reached EU soil.

The sub-Saharan man’s body was discovered in the Mediterranean shortly after the alarm was raised around 8am on Friday morning.

Police raced to the spot where he had been spotted plunging into the water in the hope of rescuing him alive but discovered him dead from a suspected drowning.

He had tried to reach Ceuta on a paraglider via the Benzu breakwater bordering Morocco.

Calling out Spain’s Interior Ministry, the AUGC said on X late yesterday alongside a video of the new paragliding crossing which this time worked: ‘We warned about it in January.

‘@interiorgob responded in writing to Congress that paraglider entries did not exist.

‘Last Friday a young man died after plunging into the sea near the Benzu breakwater while attempting to enter this way.

‘First documented death in Spain by this route.

‘And a few hours ago another flight over the border. The video speaks for itself.

‘They take off from “The dead woman”, the mountain that connects the Moroccan neighbourhood of Belyounech with the border perimeter near the Benzu breakwater.

‘Denying it does not make it disappear. It only prevents resources from being provided and surveillance measures from being adapted in time.’

Police in Ceuta are steeling themselves for the ‘real danger’ of a new mass border breach from Morocco on August 15, which has been heavily promoted on social media.

The Civil Guard has reportedly admitted in an internal report the risk of a second mass attempt to reach EU soil is real – and prepared for the possibility organisers could bring it forward now the August 15 date is out in public.

Although most of the migrants who made it to Ceuta have returned to Morocco, officials admit 2,500 irregular migrants remain including some 1000 children, although locals insist the figure is far higher.

Distressing pictures have emerged of dozens of young men, families and children sleeping on the pavement on makeshift beds made out of cardboard boxes at an industrial estate.

They have also erected makeshift camps made out of bamboo and reeds on a beach near a temporary migrant holding centre.

Several girls who were among the wave of migrants and remained in Ceuta have complained of being sexually assaulted after arriving and finding themselves obliged to sleep rough.

On Saturday a Moroccan migrant who broke into a stranger’s fifth-floor flat and crept into bed with her in his underpants was handed an expulsion order.

Beatriz Ferron, 62, started screaming after waking up to find the semi-naked intruder, one of the estimated migrants who swam into Ceuta in last month’s mass border breach, laying beside her.

The intruder was arrested on Friday morning and hauled to court hours later in Spain’s North African enclave.

At the weekend it emerged he had pleaded guilty to a crime of breaking and entering and handed a 16-month prison sentence which was immediately substituted for deportation and a five-year ban on entering Spain.

Court sources also confirmed the unnamed individual already had a deportation order hanging over his head and had been convicted of three sex assaults in Spain.

Full details of his previous crimes have not been made public but the earlier removal order is said to have been issued by a court in the eastern Spanish city of Valencia.

Last November five people were arrested in Morocco after police smashed a gang accused of helping migrants reach EU soil using the daring method.

The suspects, said to come from different African countries, were rounded up nearly two months after a man was filmed flying over a heavily-fortified border fence into Ceuta which lies opposite Gibraltar.

All Spanish police found from a search of the spot where he landed was the abandoned multi-coloured paragliding gear in undergrowth he had used for his exploit.

The successful border breach was described at the time as the first of its kind ever – attempted or accomplished – between Morocco and Ceuta.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she’s freezing her eggs

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she's freezing her eggs

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez says she is freezing her eggs as she decides her next political moves ahead of the 2028 presidential election campaign.

“This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” Ocasio-Cortez, 36, said on Instagram about her decision regarding her reproductive options.

The New York congresswoman, a leading figure of Democrats’ progressive left flank, did not say explicitly whether she plans to have children. She said in her social media posts that she was taking a “political risk” in talking so personally about her potential family plans.

She said later on ABC “This Week” on Sunday that she has not ruled out running for president or for the U.S. Senate seat held by Democrats’ floor leader, Chuck Schumer of New York, in 2028. She explained that she wants to normalize conversations about what women face in their professional and personal lives, while also highlighting the policies of President Donald Trump’s administration.

“In this political environment, where this administration is denying reproductive care to women across the country, from abortion rights to the ability to carry out a healthy pregnancy, I think it’s important for us as leaders to have these conversations,” she said.

Trump’s administration opposes abortion rights, and the Republican president’s first-term appointees to the Supreme Court provided the margins in the 2022 ruling that struck down the Roe v. Wade decision that had established a constitutional right to terminate a pregnancy.

Separately, however, Trump in 2025 signed an executive order designed to lower the costs of in vitro fertilization.

Ocasio-Cortez sponsored a Democratic bill in 2022, when the party controlled the House, to codify abortion rights into federal law after the Supreme Court’s abortion decision.

As part of her weekend announcement, Ocasio-Cortez noted that women — in politics and other fields — face different standards and scrutiny about their family status.

“Men run for office, or frankly they interview for jobs, and people don’t think in the back of their minds, ‘OK, this guy’s running for office, how old is he? Oh, well, is he going to want to start a family?’” she said.

The leader of the Winter Wolves’ death doesn’t feel tragic, as he vows to survive just long enough to see Tumbleton’s main gate fall.

He also manages to strike down Lord Ormund Hightower in the process, meaning he more than lives up to the task.

After the battle is ended, we learn Hugh Hammer’s wife Kat has died amid the chaos.

Earlier in the episode, we hear Hugh calling for her during the struggle, but he does not find her.

Ormund Hightower

Villainous Lord Ormund Hightower, who establishes himself as one of the most snobbish and prudish characters in the Game of Thrones universe, meets a fittingly vulgar end.

After forcing children to guard Tumbleton’s gates as human shields, he is set upon by Roderick Dustin, who drives a sword up his backside.

Heleana Targaryen

Tragically, death finally befalls everyone’s favourite dreamer far away from the battlefield.

Following the forced departure of her mother Alicent, Helaena is no longer protected from the cruelty of the palace.

In the end, she decides she would rather die than remain imprisoned by Rhaenyra and throws herself out of the window very reminiscent of the one King Tommen Baratheon defenestrates himself from over 100 years later in Game of Thrones.

She leaves behind a curiously detailed tapestry, which could reveal her most telling prophecy to date.

House of the Dragon season 3 is available to watch on HBO Max UK & Ireland and Sky Atlantic.

The multi-award-winning American band brought their flamboyant headline show to TK Maxx presents Scarborough Open Air Theatre on Saturday night, turning the North Yorkshire coast into a giant open-air dance floor.

Frontman Jake Shears, joined by Del Marquis, Babydaddy, a full band, and vocalists, burst on stage with the unstoppable I Don’t Feel Like Dancing – a fittingly euphoric opening for a sun-soaked Saturday by the sea.

There was barely time for the crowd to catch its breath as Laura and She’s My Man followed, setting the tone for a night packed with disco beats, singalong choruses, and more glittering glam-pop than Scarborough had seen in some time.

Shears and co dazzled as brightly as the earlier summer sunshine, leading thousands in mass dance and singalong moments to fan favourites including Take Your Mama, Comfortably Numb and, inevitably, the gloriously camp Let’s Have A Kiki.

The party did not stop there.

Scissor Sisters closed their hit-packed set with Filthy/Gorgeous and Music Is The Victim, sending fans home buzzing after a colourful celebration of one of pop’s most distinctive back catalogues.

Special guests Bimini and The Hidden Cameras helped get the Saturday-night party underway, with both acts also making guest appearances during the headline set.

Scissor Sisters’ show follows a string of huge nights at Scarborough Open Air Theatre this summer.

The venue’s record-breaking 2026 programme of 26 headline concerts continues on Friday with Holly Johnson, followed by Hollywood Vampires on Saturday.

ITV viewers shared their thoughts after crime drama Van der Valk returned to screens

Viewers issued the same complaint as crime drama Van der Valk aired on ITV.

The Amsterdam-set series starring Marc Warren as police detective Van der Valk has returned for a fourth run, which is airing three years after its last season wrapped.

Fans have said it’s “a joy” to have it back on screens, but many were less than impressed with its latest episode, posting messages on social media calling it “laughable”.

In the episode, an environmental campaigner is murdered before a global conference, and a suspect caught on CCTV turns out to be a famous singer Cobie Stegenga (Lateesha Verwey) who was presumed to be dead. The plot thickens when it turns out that Cobie has been living below the radar for two years, and that she was under the control of villain Anki Bergen (Raquel Cassidy).

The final moments of the episode saw a chase and a showdown between Van der Valk and Inspector Lucienne Hassell (Maimie McCoy) as they apprehended Anki.

Some viewers tuning in poked holes in the plot, with one posting on X: “Getting increasingly daft. Jeep can’t catch a Volvo estate over rough ground. They then shoot out its tyre with a pistol from distance — despite a hostage being inside. Then VdV SHOOTS AN AXE out of a woman’s hand despite not hitting a BMW earlier in the episode.”

“How could they possibly have made the last 15 minutes of #VanDerValk any more pathetic!??” someone else posted on the platform, which was formerly Twitter.

“Great episode but poor ending, laughable,” said someone else, while one remarked: “This has degenerated into pretty laughable c*** now. Shame.”

Another viewer suggested the storylines were “really bad”, adding: “I like Marc Warren usually but this series is awful.”

Somebody else commented: “A woman comes at you with an axe, you’re a police officer you have a gun, you let them walk away with a person of interest. Do better.”

However, others were impressed with Marc’s performance and gripped by the action.

“Enjoying this latest series of Van der Valk,” said one. “Especially as this episode they are showing more of the beautiful city of Amsterdam!

Another said: “I’m loving the new series of Van der Valk. Mind you… I’d watch Marc Warren in anything.”

Van der Valk is available on ITVX.

Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over introducing new celebrity version

The former Strictly champ will spend weekends with well-known figures and their families in the upcoming seventh series, offering an intimate look into their lives through her signature, candid interviewing style.

Her previous episodes have featured people from a wide range of backgrounds, including a nine-year-old YouTuber and a self-described ‘benefits queen,’ but this marks the first time the format will focus exclusively on high-profile guests.

Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over introducing new celebrity version

“Stacey’s sleepovers are so popular with viewers and critics alike because the format allows her subjects to really open up, exposing the good and — let’s face it — sometimes the bad about their personality, relationships, and lifestyle,” a source told The Sun.

“It always makes for a raw and real take on whoever is hosting Stacey and it suits her style brilliantly.

“This will be her first celebrity series and it’ll be fascinating to see how the stars react under the format.”

Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over first aired in 2019 and has since produced four UK series, along with two series of the American spin-off.

Past episodes have featured a teenage cage fighter, a 70-year-old dominatrix, and families living with disabilities.
