Summer gaming Every December we get people talking about what games they think best celebrate the season, and it’s always Christmas NiGHTS or something, but what about the game that’s best to play when the weather is good?
The first one that always comes to mind for me is Super Mario Sunshine, which is easily the worst 3D Mario but I still have fond memories of playing because it reminds me of the summer holidays. So imagine my shock that when I looked up the release date it did come out in the summer in Japan and the US but didn’t make it to Europe until October!
Maybe I only played it the next summer, but I don’t think so. I think I got it when it came out and it was so bright and sunny, with its beaches and water pistol backpack, that I just associate it with summer and holidays. I actually think that’s kind of neat. Primer
Dark tidings Happy Star Wars Day, everyone (assuming this gets shown on Monday). I’m hoping we might get a tease of Star Wars Jedi 3 today, as I don’t think there’s a Star Wars Celebration until next year now. Not sure how likely that is but it seems a long time since the last one, even if they were set back by the director leaving.

I’ve really enjoyed the last two games, even if I don’t really like the grey Jedi theme going on with Cal. I feel the movies made it very clear that ‘once you start down the dark path forever will it dominate your destiny’, so the idea of switching it on when you get to a hard part seems wrong to me.
But I guess that’s the problem with Star Wars nowadays, everyone has their own view of it and there’s no way everything, or maybe even anything, is going to match up with that. Lonni
GC: There is no Star Wars Celebration this year so it’s not impossible there could be some kind of annoucement today, although something at Summer Game Fest is more likely.

Bored of the Rings I don’t know how I feel about Warhorse maybe working on a new Lord of the Rings game. Although I would like to see a big budget role-playing game, I don’t know that Warhorse are quite big enough to do it the way I imagine. The scale would have to be a lot bigger than Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and that’s going to cost so much I’m not sure it’s feasible for anyone.
I’d much rather see them make something new. Whether it’s a new historical setting or something completely different I’m not bothered, but Kingdom Come was great at ignoring what other companies were doing and going with what the developers were passionate about. As much as I love Lord of the Rings that’s what we need more of, not more licensed games. Scooter
Aging gracelessly I really like the look of those Commodore 64 and Spectrum portables, but I feel like we’re dancing round the problem at the moment. It’s all very easy to recreate the hardware – you could just run it as an emulator on any PC or phone – but the games themselves are in need of a major update.

I know remasters of such old, UK-centric games are unlikely but as good as The Great Escape and Head Over Heels seemed to anyone at the time I just don’t think they can entertain anyone new nowadays, and I can tell you I’ve tried with my kids.
You could say the same for NES games but of course they get constant remasters and remakes to keep them playable. Maybe there’s something that can be done as a fan project or a Kickstarter but I think the more likely option is that these games will just fade from memory and never be played again, at least within the next decade or so. Sunny with a chance of snowdrift In terms of the debate over the new Resident Evil movie trailer I’m happy for it to ignore the characters and even monsters, to a degree, as what works in a game does not necessarily work in a movie, as we’ve seen multiple times with Resident Evil itself.
What I don’t get though is why is it snowing in the film? This is set in Raccoon City, before it gets nuked, and not once has it ever been portrayed as snowing during that time. I don’t think it was ever implied to be winter and I seem to remember everyone having light clothing. Heck, Jill was wearing a boob tube in Resident Evil 3!

Some details like that do annoy me for some reason, as it doesn’t seem to add anything and yet it makes it clear that they don’t care about directly contradicting the games. Kubrak
Exclusive U-turn I think it’s obvious that Microsoft’s campaign against exclusives was not coming from an honest place. On one hand it was coming from Satya Nadella, who doesn’t understand games and doesn’t like the concept of exclusives. But most of it was coming from Xbox in general realising they didn’t have any exclusives anyone cared about so the obvious thing to do was try and pretend exclusives were anti-consumer and shame Sony for having them.
The weird thing is it kind of worked. I don’t know that any normal person really believed it, but all of a sudden Sony were releasing games on PC and Switch, despite the obvious dangers of undermining the PlayStation and the fact that they weren’t very good ports and were making Sony look bad.
This isn’t the first time they’ve done this though. I’ve never understood why they gave in and allowed console cross-play. I don’t really play multiplayer, so I don’t care either way, but why treat Xbox as an equal when before they were forcing people to make a choice.

I’m more than prepared to accept I’m wrong for some kind of business reason but here we are and they’re reversing the exclusive policy, or at least that’s what all the rumours say.
It seems to have taken them a very long time to realise what everyone else knew before they even started, wasting who knows how much time and money in the meantime. Seems about typical for this generation. Focus
The kids are alright I am actually very surprised that Roblox fans have turned against the new AI graphics mode. It’s probably only a vocal minority but well done to those kids.
It’s not quite NFT levels but there does seem to be a turn against AI in games, that pleases me greatly. Just like NFT we can make a stand and stop companies from using it, if we just close our wallets to them. This is going to be a tougher fight, but I feel we can still win it. Tacle

Join the queue Nice to see a call for a new Maximo from Terry Gold this weekend, there are dozens of us!
I first played Ghosts To Glory digitally on PlayStation 3, which nowadays is only a slightly less archaic means than plugging in a PlayStation 2, and it quickly became one of my favourites alongside Contra: Shattered Soldier (I like hard games).
As Terry pointed out, there was a sequel, the Army Of Zin, which sadly toned down the intricate level design and difficulty to focus more on combat.
There was also plans for a third game, footage of which you can see here, but sadly it was cancelled due to poor sales of Army Of Zin and poor everything from Capcom Studio 8’s next and final game, Final Fight Streetwise.
After all these years I’m quietly optimistic we could get a new Maximo, considering Capcom’s can’t miss, fan-pleasing form of late. Although they haven’t made any new Dino Crisis and that seems like a no-brainer. ANON
GC: Like you, we’d assume Dino Crisis is next in line but after that we’d think there’s a reasonable chance of some kind of new Ghosts ‘N Goblins game.
Inbox also-rans At this point I’d settle for a low budget XCOM 3 but I don’t think it’s going to happen. I hate to say it but I think 2K has bigger fish to fry. Loki

The challenge will see them tackling the highest peaks in Scotland, England, and Wales – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike, and Snowdon – covering a distance of about 23 miles, with 3,000 metres of elevation.
Participants aim to complete the challenge in 24 hours.
A 20-strong team, including officers from Durham Roads and Armed Policing Unit (DRAP), Durham Special Constabulary, and the force’s Media Team, will begin the challenge on the evening of Thursday, June 18, in Scotland, with the aim of finishing the following evening in Wales.

The team is raising money for the baby loss charity, 4Louis, which works to support anyone affected by a miscarriage, stillbirth, or the death of a baby or child.

The challenge will also raise awareness of the Fatal Four, the four main factors that contribute to deaths on the UK’s roads, which are speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, not wearing a seatbelt, and use of a mobile phone.
DRAP Sergeant Steve Adey, who is organising the challenge, said: “Many of the officers taking part in this challenge are specialist roads policing officers, who are dedicated to keeping the roads safe for everyone.
“All too often, they have to deal with collisions which involve one or more of the fatal four and must deliver the horrendous news to a family that their loved one has been seriously hurt, or worse, killed.
“Sadly, a number of these involve children, who are one of the most vulnerable road users.
“Six children are killed or seriously hurt on the UK’s roads every day, which is the equivalent of a whole class of children every week.
“These figures are utterly heartbreaking and completely unacceptable.
“Through this challenge, we hope to raise awareness of the fatal four and the devastation they can cause, while also raising funds for 4Louis, to provide much-needed support to anyone affected by child loss.”
The charity is particularly close to Sgt Adey’s heart after his daughter, Primrose, died tragically only a week before her second birthday, in 2019.

All money raised from the challenge will go towards 4Louis’ vital work within the North East, supporting bereaved parents and those who have been affected by child loss.
The charity provides memory boxes, cold cots that allow families precious time with their baby, bereavement training for healthcare professionals, and support resources during and after loss.
Paula Parnaby, of 4Louis, said: “We are incredibly grateful for the support from Durham Constabulary as they take on this tough and meaningful challenge.
“Having met the team, I’ve seen their determination first-hand, and I have every confidence they’ll rise to the challenge.
“Police officers often face one of the most heartbreaking duties imaginable, telling a family they’ve lost a loved one, sometimes a child.
“This is where we can work closely with the police, to ensure bereaved families are not left to face their grief alone.
“Every pound raised through this challenge will help us continue providing vital support to families coping with the devastating loss of a baby or child.
“Together, we can make sure they receive the care and compassion they need when it matters most.”

The team are being supported by Workwear Express, who have provided clothing and rucksacks for the challenge, as well as the Police Federation and Durham Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC), Joy Allen.
PCC Allen said: “This is an adventure with purpose, and I am full of admiration for the officers and staff who will be testing their endurance to the limits with this charity climb.
“With over 3,000 metres of climbing involved it isn’t going to be easy but with every step they take, these brave officers and staff will know their efforts are making a vital difference for two amazing causes.
Bruno Fernandes spoke about his future at Manchester United as the club prepare for a busy summer transfer window
Manchester United are bracing themselves for another major summer of change atOld Trafford. The club have endured a tumultuous campaign due to a poor spell under previous head coach Ruben Amorim.
Their form has improved, though, since the interim appointment of Michael Carrick. A decision regarding the club’s next permanent manager will sit at the top of the agenda ahead of the summer, while the transfer window will provide the chance to inject additional quality into the squad.
Meanwhile, club captain and talisman Bruno Fernandes has spoken openly about his own future at Old Trafford amid reports he could seek new challenges next season.
Here, the Manchester Evening News examines the latest United headlines.
Bruno Fernandes has delivered his clearest signal yet that his future lies at Old Trafford. Last summer, the 31-year-old was linked with a move to Al-Hilal, with the Saudi Pro League outfit reported to have been willing to pay an eye-watering £200 million to land his signature.
Yet, the United captain rejected the approach and has since delivered what is widely seen as his best season since arriving at the club in 2020. Fernandes has now reaffirmed his commitment to the club, insisting no other team on the planet shares the same special connection he has with United.
“It’s not a question of loyalty,” Fernandes told Gary Neville on Sky Sports. “I could have gone two years ago, I could have gone three years ago, I could have gone last season, but I really like to be here.
“I think that being successful at this club is something that I can never get at another club. The joy and everything I get, the day I get what I want from this club, I don’t think I will get that from any other club in the world.
“I know how much the fans want this, I know how passionate they are. I know how much they are waiting for the club to come back again. I’m on the same ship as them. I want this ship; instead of being steady, I want it to go forward and to navigate as much as we can.
“Yeah, I won the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup [but] what this club wants, what these fans want and what I want, myself and the team, we haven’t got that yet. Until my contract expires, I’m going to try.”

Barcelona drop out of transfer race
Reports emerging from Spain have indicated Barcelona have withdrawn from their pursuit of young Ajax winger Mika Godts. The 20-year-old Belgian has enjoyed an outstanding campaign for the Dutch side this season, chalking up 17 goals and 11 assists so far, sparking interest from leading clubs throughout Europe.
United are amongst those to have been linked with acquiring his services, alongside the likes of Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City. But Spanish publication Marca has now claimed the La Liga giants will not be moving forward with a deal for the youngster, with the club reportedly eager to secure someone ‘with much more experience’.
The Catalan club have had United forward Marcus Rashford on loan this season, with the England international himself recording a notable 13 goals and 14 assists and often filling in on the left wing.

Barcelona have an arrangement in place that would enable them to convert his loan spell into a permanent transfer for a fee of £26 million, though there remain doubts over whether they will trigger that clause before the summer window.

However, following his success, Merton Council later sought a review of the decision, arguing that Rev Ratcliff had been aware of the restriction for nearly a year. Rev Ratcliff told the LDRS of his frustration with the council’s attempt to review, saying: “You are not meant to guess where signs are hidden behind trees or remember where they are…You are meant to see them, that is what they are for.”

A suspected hantavirus outbreak linked to rodent droppings has claimed the lives of three people on a cruise ship travelling between Argentina and Cape Verde.
One case has been confirmed and five others are being investigated, with a British national currently in intensive care. The World Health Organisation said the infections were detected aboard the MV Hondius.

Hantavirus is typically associated with environmental exposure to infected rodents, though limited human‑to‑human transmission h as been documented and can result in serious respiratory illness. A spokesperson for South Africa’s health ministry confirmed at least two people had died onboard the vessel, which the Dutch tour company Oceanwide Expeditions operates.
The ship departed Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20, according to the company’s published itinerary, due to arrive in Cape Verde on Monday (May 4).
A 69-year-old British man was evacuated to Johannesburg during the trip as passengers showed signs of the virus, and is currently receiving treatment in intensive care.

South African authorities confirmed the first person to show symptoms was a 70-year-old passenger who died on board. His body has since been transferred to the island of Saint Helena.
The man’s 69-year-old wife also became ill during the journey and was evacuated to South Africa, where she later died in a Johannesburg hospital.
The ship measures 107.6m (353ft) in length and can carry up to 170 passengers across 80 cabins, according to Oceanwide Expeditions
The WHO said it is assisting with coordination between member states and the ship’s operator, including the medical evacuation of two symptomatic passengers, a full public health risk assessment, and support for those still on board.

Daniel began a relationship with Megan shortly after she arrived in Weatherfield. The beloved character doesn’t have a lot of luck when it comes to the world of romance, but eventually came to wonder if that was about to change after spending more time with Megan.
When the truth was exposed, Daniel was horrified that he had not only developed feelings for someone who takes advantage of children, but also that he failed to realise what Megan was doing.
Producer of the show Kate Brooks has revealed this is going to impact Daniel for quite some time. As he spirals, Daniel starts to wonder just who he can really trust.
‘He met somebody who’s on the same page as a teacher, apparently respectable, and he’s been completely duped by it, and it completely makes him unravel’, Kate said.
‘Rob who plays Daniel is such a phenomenal actor and we’ll see him slowly start to lose it, because of wondering who to trust. He’s been bitten so badly by this relationship, and by the fact that he was the one who defended her as well, he feels like he’s let Will down. He feels like he’s let Bertie down.
‘We’re really going to chart the impact she’s had on him and his life and his attitude to relationships going forward.’
The Corrie boss also revealed a surprise friendship will form between Daniel and Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances-Brown) of all people soon.
She explained: ‘Her story will dovetail off into Daniel’s story as well. An unlikely little friendship will be formed, which I don’t think many people see coming, but it’s a really different insight into what makes them both tick. For the first time, Daniel’s able to be truthful about how he feels.
Megan started a relationship with Daniel to cover up her abuse (Picture: ITV)
‘And similarly, Jodie’s able to be quite truthful with Daniel, because he’s in a quite a dark place. There’s some interesting dynamics between them.’

At school, when Daniel tells Hope that he suspects that she cheated on her poem and used AI, Hope retaliates with a snide remark about Megan.
Still struggling with the fact that he was in a relationship with an abuser, Daniel tries to take control and orders Hope to write another poem. He’s further wound up though, as Hope makes one up about Daniel and Megan.

Daniel clashes with Hope (Picture: ITV)
As Daniel tries to grab the paper out of her hand, Hope accuses him of assault, just as Mrs Crawshaw arrives and demands to know what’s going on.
It would appear the future of his career is hanging in the balance later in the week, as Daniel tells Ken Barlow (William Roache) about the disciplinary action Crawshaw took against him.
He later rants to Adam Barlow (Sam Robertson) about the situation but he ends up scaring young Bertie. Daniel tells Ken and Adam that he’s heading to the Lakes to clear his head, and they agree to look after Bertie.
However, when he’s alone, Daniel blocks his thoughts out with a bottle of whisky beside him…
Megan will pay for her crimes, says Coronation Street boss (Picture: Danielle Baguley/ITV)
So Megan Walsh (Beth Nixon) survived the Grim Reaper’s big, swinging scythe in Coronation Street’s murder week, but according to Corrie boss, Kate Brooks, that doesn’t mean she’ll get away with her heinous crimes.
Megan’s grooming and sexual abuse of Will Driscoll (Lucas Hodgson-Wale) has been going on for a long while, with her utilising her position as his teacher and sports coach to keep it under wraps, which she’s done to conceal affairs with previous students.
When the perfectly precocious Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) discovered what was going on, Megan launched a campaign of psychological torture against him so brutal that the youngster turned to drugs as she attempted to destroy his much-prized academic record.
Though Sam eventually told all about Megan’s abuse, leading to Will’s family learning of her true nature, she’s managed to remain at arm’s length of the law.

With a deeply brainwashed Will refusing to admit the truth to the police, and Megan terminating her pregnancy, the only piece of physical evidence that would prove her guilt was lost.
Megan’s abuse of Will has had quite the ripple effect (Picture: Danielle Baguley/ITV)
‘Megan and Will, there’s a bit of a journey to go on with that story. So obviously she’s been exposed, but Will at this point, he believed it was love. He believed it was all genuine,’ Kate said.
‘Scales fall from his eyes and Tim Metcalfe’s (Joe Duttine) going to be so instrumental in kind of making him realise what’s gone on and how unacceptable and how wrong it was.
‘Obviously, there are soap Gods, and as in soap God’s law, there’ll be some kind of retribution for Megan. She cannot get off of this scot-free. We will go down the proper channels. Whether it goes on to plan or not, I cannot say, but it goes down quite a very big path.’
Advertisement
Megan’s showdown with Maggie had disastrous consequences (Picture: Amy Brammall/ITV)
So that’s it then, Megan will pay for what she’s done. Surely that can’t fix the carnage she’s left in her wake though, right?
‘It’s showcasing that, Megan’s actions have not just directly impacted Will and the Driscolls, Sam’s also collateral damage. People’s trust has been absolutely dismantled because of this woman’s perpetual lie,’ Kate said about the lingering effects of Megan’s reign of terror.
Speaking on the future of the Driscoll clan, Kate said: ‘It’s about the family falling apart, but then kind of building themselves back up again as they try desperately to kind of repair the damage that Megan’s done. Will will be quite badly affected by what he’s been through with Megan. It does go a bit dark.’

Will will suffer in the aftermath of Megan’s reign of terror… (Picture: Amy Brammall/ITV)
…as will Sam (Picture: ITV/Danielle Baguley/Shutterstock)
As for Sam?
‘Getting him across the Megan story and having him be another victim of her manipulation felt like a really interesting way of telling the story. But as a result of that, his mental health has been really, really damaged by everything that’s happened – by the manipulation, by the fact that he wasn’t believed, by the fear that he felt every time he was with Megan.’
So while Megan will face the music eventually, the scars she’s inflicted on Weatherfield will remain for a long while after she does.
The murders of four women involved in prostitution can still be solved according to Police Scotland’s head of major crime
Scotland’s most senior detective has vowed to bring the killers of four women to justice and urged people with information on their murders to finally come forward and “lift that burden.”
Seven women involved in prostitution were murdered between 1991 and 2025 but in only three cases has there been a conviction including that of Iain Packer two years ago for the death of Emma Caldwell.
However the murders of Diane McInally in 1991, Karen McGregor in 1993, Leona McGovern in 1995 and Jackie Gallagher in 1996, remain unsolved and unresolved.
DCS Paul Livingstone Head of Major Crime at Police Scotland says unsolved cases are constantly being reviewed and any new information on the four murders will be acted on
He also appealed for anyone holding back on the killings to finally come forward and break their silence.
He added: “What I do believe is that taking a life must bear a significant burden on an individual. And I can only imagine that knowing about someone taking a life who hasn’t yet faced justice must also put a similar sort of burden on those people.
“If there’s anybody out there that suspects or knows or believe that someone’s responsible, tell us, let’s help you lift that burden and we’ll take action on the information that you give us.
“Please don’t sit on it. Don’t let it eat away at you. I would urge them to come forward.
“It could be that final piece in a jigsaw that gives families much needed answers, gives them justice that they and victims deserve.”

All seven victims worked Glasgow’s notorious city-centre red light district known as the Drag to feed their drug habits.
DCS Livingstone was speaking out in the latest episode of the Clyde 1 podcast Beware Book about the seven murders.
The title refers to a diary at a drop-in centre in Glasgow where women logged dangerous clients’ names.
Three men stood trial separately for the murders of Karen, Leona and Jackie but were cleared.
In Diane’s case two suspects, now dead, were arrested but the charges later dropped. The men acquitted of Karen and Jackie’s murders are also now dead.
However DCS Livingstone says that doesn’t mean the cases are closed and further investigations can still be carried out for other potential suspects
Advertisement
He also acknowledged the “pain and the distress” suffered by the families of the four women over the years.
The police chief added: “I’d like to actually reassure those victims and their families, we haven’t forgotten about you, or their loved ones. The obvious common factor is that unresolved status, and therefore there’s a feeling of disappointment around someone not being held accountable for their loved one’s death and ultimately brought to justice.”
DCS Livingstone also wants to improve relationships and contact with the families of the four women.
He added:”I understand that they’ll feel let down because ultimately no one has ever been convicted or held accountable for the death of their loved ones.”
DCS Livingstone highlighted the “cold case” conviction in 2019 of restaurant worker Zhi Men Chen for the 1997 murder of Tracey Wylde as an example of what can be achieved.
The young mum who was involved in prostitution was found dead in her flat in the Barmulloch area of Glasgow Chen, 44, was identified as a suspect when a DNA sample he gave to police after his arrest for another crime matched a sample found in Tracy’s flat.
Yesterday two of the four families welcomed the possibility of finally getting justice.

Alice Wilson, mother of Jackie Gallagher, said:”I just wish that this person was caught. I know it’s been a long time but somebody must know something and end this misery for me.”
Meanwhile Dolly Glover, aunt of Diane McInally, added: “I think it would put everybody at ease if they could just find somebody. You just never know. Somebody might remember something that will come to them.”
Margo Lafferty was also one of the seven murdered women.

The 27 year old’s body was found in a Glasgow city-centre lane in 1998 and a 21 year old man was convicted of her murder in 2001 following a retrial.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “If anyone has any new information that could assist in the investigation of any unresolved homicide, please contact Police via the non-emergency number 101, alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.”
The latest episode of Beware Book is available on the Rayo app, Apple, Amazon Music and Spotify.
