Heart FM DJ Toby Anstis has recalled his most iconic and bizarre celebrity encounters during his 25 years on air.

The Broom Cupboard host, 55, landed a radio show in 2001, and in a chat with the Daily Mail, he recalled: ‘My agent had been asking them for a while, but they kept pushing back saying ‘Toby’s too much of a TV person!’

‘It was always my dream to be a DJ on the radio, not to be on TV, and 25 years on, I still love it more than ever!

‘I still have the same passion and still pinch myself that I get to do this for a living. From being a London and Birmingham only station, to the UK’s biggest radio brand with 12.8 million listeners, it’s a thrill to be part of Heart.

‘After 17 years on mid mornings, and we got it up to a record 4.3 million listeners, I was asked if I wanted to launch Heart Dance in 2019. I’m a total dance head, so it was a no brainer.

‘To launch a new national radio station and do the Breakfast Show was and still is a privilege.

‘That and Club Classics on a Friday night on Heart, getting out DJ’ing all over the UK and in Ibiza this summer at the world famous Cafe Mambo, these are the things you dream about doing and I’m eternally grateful.’

During his quarter of a century on the airwaves, Toby has also had the chance to interview some of the world’s biggest stars. Now he tells the Daily Mail his top 10.

'Emma Bunton is my favourite Spice Girl. In all the years I've known her and worked with her, she¿s never changed. Still the loveliest and kindest and coolest music star!'

‘I’d say my favourite Spice Girl. In all the years I’ve known her and worked with her, she’s never changed. Still the loveliest and kindest and coolest music star!

‘Soon after I’d started working at Heart they offered me a Saturday morning show, and asked Emma if she’d like to co-host with me for a few weeks.

‘I can think of worse ways to spend a Saturday morning!

‘My mum had always said, ‘You need find someone like Emma Bunton, she comes across as such a lovely person.’ Thanks mum, no pressure, set the standards high!

‘She is that girl next door, never a hint of diva! And a big shout to her hubbie Jade, they’re a gorgeous couple!’

Robbie Williams

'I¿ve Known Robbie Williams for a long time. Not like close pals, we¿ve never gone down All Bar One for a pint but we¿ve bumped into each other a lot over the years'

‘I’ve Known Robbie Williams for a long time. Not like close pals, we’ve never gone down All Bar One for a pint but we’ve bumped into each other a lot over the years’

‘I’ve known Robbie for a long time. Not like close pals, we’ve never gone down All Bar One for a pint but we’ve bumped into each other a lot over the years, starting with Take That’s first TV interview on the O Zone back in the day.

‘He was always the cheeky classmate, effortlessly funny and charming at the same time.

‘Then one morning when I was hosting mid mornings on Heart he was in the building at Global, it wasn’t planned that he’d be on the show, but as he walked past the studio window, he saw me, waved and just wandered in as I was doing a live link to the nation!

”Ok, let’s stop that record, Robbie Williams has just rocked up!’ Totally unannounced, came in, sat down and started chatting. We got chatting about relationships!

‘He was so happy to have met and married Ayda, and I was single at that time. And he was like ‘Tobe, meeting someone special is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. Now we need to find you someone.’

‘I was then saying, ‘ Rob it’s not about me it’s about you! He said, ‘No Tobe let’s chat about this…!’ After a full on Robbie relationship therapy session, on air, we did finally get to some Robbie music stuff!’

Bruno Mars

'We did a run of Up Close and Personal live shows with Heart, and Bruno Mars was one of our special guests. 'He absolutely smashed the gig! I got to chat to him ahead of his performance'

‘We did a run of Up Close and Personal live shows with Heart, and Bruno Mars was one of our special guests.

‘He absolutely smashed the gig! I got to chat to him ahead of his performance. Him and his Hooligans had just finished a huge tour the night before but still wanted to do our show. And yes Wet Wipes are on his rider!

‘I know I’m pretty full of energy but Bruno is a whole other level! Still down to earth, and just loves performing.

‘Remember that arm wrestling sketch that went viral with Bruno ripping someone’s arm off! Obviously I had to challenge him to a wrestle. I won’t again!’

Lady Gaga

'Lady Gaga was wearing a veil over her face so you couldn¿t see her very well. Plus she decided to spin round on the studio chair for the entire seven minutes of the interview!'

‘Lady Gaga was wearing a veil over her face so you couldn’t see her very well. Plus she decided to spin round on the studio chair for the entire seven minutes of the interview!’

‘This was an interesting one. Gaga came into Global with a huge entourage and not a lot of time to spare.

‘You often only get six or seven minutes for the whole interview. And believe me they shut the interview down if you go a second over!

‘So we had that pressure. And also she was wearing a veil over her face so you couldn’t see her very well. Plus she decided to spin round on the studio chair for the entire seven minutes!

‘So I only really saw her for half the time! But it was a fun three and a half minutes, and she was super cool and friendly. She just wanted to spin that day!’

Lionel Richie

'How many people does he meet and do selfies with every day of his life? Yet Lionel Ritchie still remembered my name from another interview we¿d done for telly a couple of years before'

‘How many people does he meet and do selfies with every day of his life? Yet Lionel Ritchie still remembered my name from another interview we’d done for telly a couple of years before’

‘So here’s a guy that’s been there, done it, got the Legends T-shirt at Glastonbury!

‘How many people does he meet and do selfies with every day of his life? Yet he still remembered my name from another interview we’d done for telly a couple of years before.

‘He came into the Heart studio with the biggest smile and said: ”Toby! Great to see you!” That felt good!

‘I’ve always found the real stars who’ve grafted for years and consistently come up with the goods musically, have all the chart and streaming stats to prove it are the nicest ones in the business.

‘Quite often the ”celebs” who’ve been around for two minutes can be precocious entitled nightmares!

‘Not Lionel Richie. Charmed us with his stories, and managed to say ”Hello” in 5 different languages! (is it me you’re looking for….)’

Craig David

'Craig David came across as very spiritual and present, and in control. Those songs, 7 Days, Fill Me In and Re-Rewind will live on forever!''

‘Craig David came across as very spiritual and present, and in control. Those songs, 7 Days, Fill Me In and Re-Rewind will live on forever!”

‘Rewind to 2015, Craig had been away in Miami for years. There was definitely unfinished business for him in the UK, after the huge success of, Born To Do It.

‘The fanbase had never gone away. He’d kind of left the party in the UK on a high, a bit like Take That had when they spilt and we all saw the appetite their fans had when they made that comeback.

‘Same for Craig, the affection for him and his songs was clear. But the humility and surprise and excitement in his face was amazing! As humble as they get.

‘He talked about all that Bo Selecta nonsense, which had hurt him. But not affected the love the UK has for him.

‘He came across as very spiritual and present, and in control. Those songs, 7 Days, Fill Me In and Re-Rewind will live on forever!’

Carl Cox

'I mean as DJ's go, Carl Cox is right up there! A legend. I¿d seen him play at Space in Ibiza where he had the island¿s biggest night for over a decade! He is ¿house music¿s final boss¿'

‘I mean as DJ’s go, Carl Cox is right up there! A legend. I’d seen him play at Space in Ibiza where he had the island’s biggest night for over a decade! He is ‘house music’s final boss”

‘I mean as DJ’s go, he’s right up there! A legend. I’d seen him play at Space in Ibiza where he had the island’s biggest night for over a decade! He is ‘house music’s final boss’.

‘To get to chat to him recently was a joy. He’d grown up in Carshalton (Surrey) and played records for his mum and dad’s parties when he was nine! Now he plays at Ibiza’s biggest club UNIVRS every Sunday night, and is killing it all over again!

‘He’s just turned 64 but has the youthfulness of a 21 year old. (i think we’re all a bit like that!) He simply loves playing records and making people dance.

‘He’s got all the swagger, his entrance to a gig in France this summer at Chateau Chantilly went viral. His right shoulder is now more famous than him!

‘A bit like the original supermodels, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, the likes of Carl, David Guetta and Fatboy Slim are still blazing a trail for everyone else to follow!

‘Still the main players, the original superstar DJ’s hogging the giant billboards all over Ibiza!’

Fatboy Slim

'What a top bloke Fatboy Slim is! Another groundbreaking style-making superstar DJ!'

‘What a top bloke Fatboy Slim is! Another groundbreaking style-making superstar DJ!’

‘What a top bloke! Another groundbreaking style-making superstar DJ!

‘We got chatting about his book, It Ain’t Over Til The Fatboy Sings!, Genius! And a brilliant read plus a load of era defining photos and clubbing reference points.

‘Can’t remember exactly how his former wife Zoe came up, but he mentioned her very fondly. Anyway, I then said I worked with her on Children’s BBC and the O Zone, and that she was half an hour late on her first day when we were live on BBC1.

‘Fatboy then jumped in and said ‘Oops that would possibly have been my fault. We’d probably been up all night!’ The crazy Nineties!’

Take That

'I go back a long way with Take That. Smash Hits Parties, Fast Forward covers, almost sinking in a boat off the Isle of Wight, switching on the Oxford Street Christmas lights, we¿ve done a lot'

‘We go back a long way! Smash Hits Poll Winners Parties, Fast Forward covers, almost sinking in a boat off the Isle of Wight, switching on the Oxford Street Christmas lights, we’ve done a lot together.

‘We all got started in the Nineties. Nicky Chapman brought a cassette of It only takes a minute into the Ozone office at the BBC to see if we could give it a slot on the TV show. If it didn’t go Top 20 they were going to be dropped from their label.

‘We did a short interview, and played a bit of that video in a boxing ring and gym, and it went to number eight I think, definitely top 20, and they stayed at RCA.

‘I last interviewed them for Heart earlier this year. We always hug it out like old friends whenever we see each other.

‘Gary always says very humbly in his laid back Manchester lilt, ‘Hey Tobe, look at us, we’re still going!’

‘Gaz, you’re more than going!! That’s how they’ve always been. Down to earth lads from Manchester, living the dream, still selling out stadiums, and trying to not fall off unicycles! ( if you know you know!)’

Kylie Minogue

'When I interviewed Kylie  Minogue she answered the door, and said ¿come in!¿ First thing she said was, ¿Dannii says hi!" That put me at ease'

‘When I interviewed Kylie  Minogue she answered the door, and said ‘come in!’ First thing she said was, ‘Dannii says hi!’ That put me at ease’

‘I was actually quite nervous about meeting Kylie. I hosted a TV show on BBC1 with her sister Dannii back in the day, Fan TC, and she’s lovely.  Then I’d briefly met Kylie when she came to the set for one of the episodes.

‘When I interviewed her for Heart at a very cool bougie hotel in Kensington, I was just told to go up to her suite.

‘She answered the door, and said ‘come in!’ First thing she said was, ‘Dannii says hi!’ That put me at ease.

‘But she was so genuine and lovely and somehow vulnerable? Just in how she spoke about everything. Without doubt a very savvy business woman, but also incredibly ‘normal.”

Bolton Council confirms Saturday bin collections after issue

Collections have been disrupted in some areas because of what Bolton Council described as unavoidable circumstances.

Residents affected by the delays have been asked to keep their bins outside while crews work through the missed rounds. They have also been told to check the council website for updates.

Bolton Council said via social media: “In some areas of Bolton, our normal bin collection schedule has been disrupted due to unavoidable circumstances.

“We have 7 bin wagons out tomorrow collecting missed rounds from the week.”

The message was issued on Friday, August 21, and collections are continuing today, Saturday, August 22. The council said its crews were also providing waste collections at weekends to deal with the delays.

A Bolton Council spokesman said: “Please continue to leave your bins out and check the council website for information.”

The council’s missed-bin page was last updated on Friday, August 21 at 3.41 pm. It lists streets where the authority is aware that collections have not yet taken place, meaning residents do not need to report the missed collection.

The list includes collections missed because of operational issues and other entries marked as no access.

It covers grey bins for general waste, beige bins for paper and card, burgundy bins for glass, cans and plastic bottles, and green food and garden waste bins.

Council records show 158 operational-issue entries between Wednesday, August 19 and Friday, August 21. These entries relate to 63 grey bins, 19 beige bins and 76 burgundy bins.

The largest number was recorded on Thursday, August 20, when the council listed 98 operational-issue entries.

These included 36 grey bins and 62 burgundy bins.

A further 54 entries were recorded on Friday, August 21. They included 27 grey bins, 14 beige bins and 13 burgundy bins.

Six operational-issue entries were recorded on Wednesday, August 19. They involved five beige bins and one burgundy bin.

Streets listed include Academy Way, Chorley New Road, Gilnow Road, Ladybridge Lane, Manchester Road, Mornington Road, Park Bank, Shurdington Road, St Helens Road and Wingates Grove.

Some streets appear more than once because different bin types were affected.

Residents whose street appears on the council’s list are advised to leave bins out for collection.

The authority says it aims to return to missed collections within two working days.

The council added: “Our crews are working hard to empty your bins, including providing waste collections at weekends.

“Thank you for your patience and understanding while we manage any temporary delays to services.”

The two-minute habit to avoid annoying airports delays

The two-minute habit to avoid annoying airports delays

Travellers are being urged to fully charge their electronic devices before heading to the airport, as flat batteries could cause unwanted hold-ups at security.

UK airport rules require passengers to demonstrate that devices can be switched on if requested by security staff, meaning a dead phone or laptop could lead to delays.

Daniel Frost, product manager at Destination2, said: “Always charge everything at least the night before – don’t count on a top-up at the gate, as airport sockets are often in short supply, faulty, and let’s face it, you’d rather be in duty free than searching the terminal for the opportunity to plug in.

“I’d always recommend packing a portable power bank in your hand luggage as a backup, but just double-check your airline’s limits as this can vary and will impact any chargers you wish to bring.

“Switch devices on and off again to confirm they’re working as intended.

“It’s such a simple thing to check, but it can be easily forgotten in the chaos of getting to the airport and the last-minute packing we’re all guilty of.”

The advice comes as Google searches for ‘airport security rules’ have risen by more than 1,000 per cent in the past year, suggesting growing confusion or concern among travellers.

Passengers are permitted to carry most electronic items in hand or hold luggage, including mobile phones, laptops, tablets, hairdryers, straighteners, and electric shavers.

Mr Frost said: “Charging your devices should be as automatic as packing your passport – a two-minute check means one less thing to think about at security.”

He also emphasised the importance of checking airline restrictions on portable chargers, as rules can vary between carriers.

Alan Shearer slams ‘unfit’ Man Utd and points out concern for Michael Carrick

Published

on

Daily Mirror

Manchester United started their Premier League campaign with a whimper, as Michael Carrick’s side fell to a woeful 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull on Saturday

Alan Shearer has labelled Manchester United’s players ‘unfit’ after they produced a dire display in their 2-0 loss against Hull. Michael Carrick’s side got their Premier League season off to the worst possible start, with first-half goals from Hull defenders Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy – both from set pieces – making the difference.

But beyond the scoreline, there was plenty to separate the sides. United lacked intensity throughout and couldn’t break Hull down, as the newly promoted hosts held on to claim all three points.

Shearer gave a scathing assessment post-match, saying on BBC Radio 5 Live: “I haven’t seen Manchester United in pre-season. I saw them in this game and they didn’t look fit.

“They didn’t look ready to play 90 minutes of intense, high pressure, high energy football. There was only one team that looked fit there and it wasn’t Manchester United.”

The Red Devils found themselves behind inside 17 minutes, with Ajayi pouncing on a rebound after Senne Lammens denied Oli McBurnie from a corner. Hull doubled their lead before-half time when Mendy converted an excellent free-kick from Regan Slater.

United captain Bruno Fernandes laid into his team’s performance, telling TNT Sports: “Same mistakes as we did last season, every away game we give too much of the ball to them. In the first 20 minutes, the goalkeeper was the one with the most touches.

“We needed to press more, be more aggressive, and then again we need to work on set-plays and not concede these type of goals. Against these types of teams, they are waiting for that moment.

Where will Manchester United finish this season? Have your say in the comments section.

“We knew before the game set-pieces would be a big part of their game. They played all pre-season with a back four but had a five against us for some height, for these moments. The most frustrating thing is that we lost the game.”

Carrick was less critical of the performance but vowed to ‘learn’ from it ahead of next Sunday’s home game against Ipswich, another newly promoted outfit. “I’m not going into areas [to improve] now, it’s for us to know and we’ll improve through the week and in the games,” Carrick also told TNT Sports.

“When we keep getting stronger as a group, that’ll come. Today’s a game we can’t ignore, we have a lot to learn from it – but we will.”

Cleared the danger to prevent a dangerous cross in the first half, but he lost possession on a few occasions and looked vulnerable at the back. Carrick may switch to Diogo Dalot next weekend. 3

‘It’s focaccia babe’ – Ancoats Deli blasts ‘ridiculous’ one-star review left on Google

Published

Manchester Evening News

‘It’s focaccia babe’

A popular deli in Ancoats has issued a tongue-in-cheek response to a scathing one-star review left on Google.

The reviewer described Ancoats Deli on Murray Street, which has a 4.6-star rating overall and dozens of five-star reviews, as the ‘most overrated spot’ in the area. They claimed the sandwiches sold there were ‘thinly filled, unhealthy, bland and absolutely slathered in oil’.

The user, who posted under an anonymous name, said ‘there are literally dozens of better sandwich spaces in and around Ancoats’ as they left the one-star rating. They rated food as one out of five, service as one out of five and atmosphere as one out of five.

But the deli and bar responded with a playful three-word comeback commenting ‘it’s focaccia babe’. They shared the lighthearted response on the Ancoats Deli Instagram page, where it was met with dozens of comments praising the food and service.

One user wrote: “Actually they’re absolutely delicious, beautiful fillings, fresh focaccia and lovely staff to boot.” Another said: “WHAT? I visited recently and I died and went to heaven. My sandwich was fabulous.”

Owner India Morris said it was important to respond because the review was ‘so ridiculous’. The 33-year-old told the Manchester Evening News: “I understand that one-star reviews are serious and very detrimental to businesses, but this one was just so ridiculous and the review from this person was just mental.

“I was speaking to my general manager in the Whatsapp chat and we were like ‘it’s literally just focaccia babe, what’s the issue’. I said just reply with that.”

India added: “It sounds like this person has never been in. The bread is literally made from oil.

“We got reviewed one-star across the board for service, food, atmosphere. Which is just not true, the person that left the review has also always reviewed everyone else one-star as well.”

India said one-star review ratings, when untrue, can lead to damage for hospitality business. “We obviously don’t like real bad reviews from customers and we reply to those but when you do you get something like that you do have to make a joke out of it”, she said.

“What’s important to me is making sure the staff don’t feel like they’ve done something wrong. We’re very lucky that what we actually have is a good product and everything else hopefully matches up to that so I’m not too worried about it, but my concern across the board for other businesses is that people who have nothing better to do are trying to cause people’s businesses harm in a climate that is already difficult for independent hospitality businesses.

“When you get a review like that unless you make light of it it becomes a problem. I think it’s if something as ridiculous and damaging as that you should respond.”

She added: “The team are really pleased with how everybody has got behind us and all the positive comments. I think the sad thing is I don’t think people understand how much damage a review can do.”

This came following the M.E.N’s look into one-star review problem at Manchester’s restaurants earlier this year. Google pointed out they will only act to remove reviews if they violate content policies or local laws.

Seven people, including two police, dead in A66 South Bank crash

The crash occurred on the A66 in South Bank at 3.39am today (Saturday, August 22), and involved a marked police vehicle and a Volkswagen Passat.

Cleveland Police said the Passat was travelling in the wrong direction when it collided with the police car, which was travelling in the correct direction.

All seven occupants of the vehicles – two police officers and five members of the public – were pronounced dead at the scene.

Pictures from the scene show a police cordon in place.

The road is expected to remain closed for the rest of the day.

Chief Constable Victoria Fuller of Cleveland Police said: “First and foremost, our thoughts are with the families of everyone involved in today’s incident.

“No one should leave their home and not return safely, including police officers serving their communities and protecting the people of Cleveland.

“This tragic incident will be felt across Cleveland, within our communities and throughout the entire policing family.”

A referral has been made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is mandatory in these circumstances.

Cleveland Police said an investigation is under way and that all families are being offered specialist support.

Jihadists slaughter and kidnap dozens of people for ‘not practicing the true teachings of Islam’ during Friday prayers in Nigeria

Jihadists have kidnapped and slaughtered scores of people in an attack during Friday prayers in central Nigeria

The exact toll of the attacks, which also hit the village of Binzi in Niger State, was unknown, federal representative Jafaru Mohammed said.

Jibril Ahmad, a civilian who survived the attack, said: ‘Soon after finishing the normal Friday prayer, the armed group of Lakuwara, in their hundreds, wielding guns, knives and machetes, began to attack us.’

‘They slaughtered some of our people, saying we are not practising the true teachings of Islam,’ Ahmad added.

Some are understood to have escaped when another jihadist group, known as Mahmuda, started clashing with the militants.

Niger state police said they were aware of the kidnapping, but had not received reports of deaths.

Africa’s most populous country is battling a 17-year insurgency by jihadist groups, who have made such abductions a key tactic – including the 2014 kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls in the town of Chibok.

The insurgency is concentrated in the northeast, though Friday’s attack was in the west of the country, an area that has seen increased activity by armed groups and militants from the Sahel as the conflict has splintered.

Some of the jihadi militants in Nigeria have presented themselves as an alternative to the government in areas with limited government and security presence.

A key issue in Nigeria is the poor welfare of the country’s overstretched and underpaid security forces, which President Bola Tinubu has sought to address by recently announcing pay rises and mass recruitment for the military.

The latest kidnapping comes just weeks after 163 kidnapped Nigerians were rescued from jihadi captivity.

The freed captives, mostly women and children, were handed over to authorities by security forces in Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, earlier this month.

The Nigerians were abducted on February 3 when jihadi militants stormed the village of Woro, killing over 160 others.

February’s attack was one of the deadliest in Nigeria in recent years, and showed how militants who had previously focused their activities in the north are moving south through Africa’s most populous nation, where gangs compete for territory and control of natural resources in villages where they outnumber the country’s overstretched security forces.

The US is providing military support to Nigeria under an agreement it says aims to protect Nigerian Christians, though much of that support is restricted to logistics and intelligence-gathering at the heart of the violence in the north.

The victims in the Muslim-majority Woro were rescued this month alongside 145 other victims who had been kidnapped, mostly from the neighbouring Niger State.

Local authorities did not say how the captives were rescued from the dense, expansive forest of the Kainji Lake National Park.

President Tinubu described it as the ‘largest rescue operation ever’ undertaken on a single day, and promised to intensify operations against armed gangs.

Go North East launches reading campaign on buses

Go North East has introduced the story stickers on the back of bus seats as part of the National Year of Reading.

The scheme aims to boost literacy by encouraging conversations about stories during everyday journeys.

Daniel Laird, commercial director at Go North East, said: “We’re really pleased to be supporting the National Year of Reading – bus journeys are a great opportunity to take a break from screens and read a book or come up with stories with your children.

“It was fantastic to offer free storytelling sessions on our open top bus, creating a unique and affordable way to engage young children with reading.

“Children also travel for free on our service throughout the summer holidays, giving families a chance to explore the many wonderful libraries and bookshops around the region.”

The prompts are designed to get families and children talking about stories, and the wider campaign hopes to reverse declining rates of reading for pleasure.

Recent figures highlight the scale of the problem in the North East, where one in five children aged five to eight does not own a book, and one in five state primary schools lack a library – compared to just one in 20 in the South.

During the summer holidays, Go North East teamed up with Seven Stories and the National Literacy Trust to host three storytelling sessions on an open-top bus outside Seven Stories in Ouseburn.

Lucy Reeves, project officer at the National Literacy Trust, said: “It has been wonderful working with Go North East to spread the joy of reading across the North East.

“The storytelling stickers have opened up more opportunities for children and families to engage with reading and storytelling in the small moments of daily life.

“Go North East have embraced the Go All In message to bring reading opportunities into new spaces, for example on our local buses.”

The National Year of Reading is a major campaign led by the Department for Education and the National Literacy Trust, aiming to encourage more people to make reading part of their everyday lives.

Go North East’s Toon Tour, an open-top sightseeing bus route, also stops outside Seven Stories and will run until September 27.

More information about Go North East’s services and journey planning can be found on their website.
