A prominent Putin critic and opponent of the war in Ukraine leaves Russia

A prominent Putin critic and opponent of the war in Ukraine leaves Russia

Opposition politician Boris Nadezhdin, who criticized Russia’s war in Ukraine and tried to challenge President Vladimir Putin in the 2024 election, said Monday he has left Russia, a move that follows a crackdown that barred him from a race for parliament this year.

Nadezhdin, 63, shared a video on Telegram, showing him standing in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

“Good news: I’m alive and free. Unfortunately, not in Russia for the time being,” he said, adding that he needs “to look around and figure out life going forward.”

In July, a Russian court fined Nadezhdin about $13 for displaying “extremist symbols,” charges that he rejected as absurd. The accusations stemmed from a 2023 online video that briefly showed a picture of the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny, convicted of extremism in a case widely seen as politically motivated.

Earlier that month, Nadezhdin also was designated a “foreign agent” — a label that brings additional government scrutiny as well as stigmatizing connotations in Russia.

That and a fine on an extremism-related charge barred him from running in September’s parliamentary vote, which is expected to be tightly controlled by the Kremlin.

The ruling United Russia party is seeking to preserve its dominance in the lower house of parliament in a race against the Communist Party and a couple of other parties that vote in sync with the Kremlin on key issues. The campaign comes amid signs of growing public fatigue with the war in Ukraine as fuel shortages and economic pain increase, an environment that reduces the authorities’ tolerance for even token opposition.

In January 2024, Nadezhdin collected thousands of signatures in his run for president as he openly called for an end to the war in Ukraine. But he was kept off the March 2024 ballot after Russia’s Supreme Court ruled that more than 9,000 signatures submitted by his campaign were invalid — enough to disqualify him. Putin faced only token opposition in the election and easily gained a fifth term.

A veteran politician, Nadezhdin worked in the government in the 1990s when he was an adviser to Sergei Kiriyenko, now a top Putin aide. He also served as a lawmaker and more recently became a member of a municipal council. He was one of the few high-profile Putin critics still living in Russia.

Earlier this year, Nadezhdin declared his bid to run for the lower house of parliament, the State Duma, and vowed to continue his symbolic campaign even after the Justice Ministry branded him with the “foreign agent” designation.

Another blow came when police briefly detained Nadezhdin and charged him with displaying “extremist symbols.” The politician said he was considering a move abroad but was barred from leaving Russia. It wasn’t clear from his Monday video statement whether the ban has since been lifted, or if he left the country despite it.

After the Kremlin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, authorities ramped up their crackdown on dissent and free speech, relentlessly targeting rights organizations, independent media, members of civil society organizations and Kremlin critics. Hundreds of people have been jailed and thousands of others fled the country.

The musicians turning bat calls into club music

The musicians turning bat calls into club music

A new album made from the echolocation calls of bats is inviting listeners to hear one of the UK’s most misunderstood mammals differently

Echo in the Dark, by artists Hanna Tuulikki and Tommy Perman, transforms the ultrasonic calls of eight bat species into electronic music, blending translated bat recordings with the human voice.

Normally beyond the range of human hearing, the calls have been made audible using heterodyne bat detectors, revealing clicks, buzzes and rhythms that can sound surprisingly close to electronic music.

The project began in 2022, when Hospitalfield, an arts venue in Arbroath, Scotland, commissioned Tuulikki to make work inspired by bats after running community bat walks during the Covid lockdowns. She proposed dance music made from echolocation sounds and invited Perman to collaborate.

“It was an easy yes from me,” said Perman, who has long used electronic music to fuse natural sounds with other instruments. “What you hear is extraordinary – clicks, buzzes, rhythms and warbles that could easily be mistaken for samples from electronic dance music. That realisation felt like an invitation we couldn’t ignore.”

The pair made some recordings themselves, gathered others through an open call, and worked with Tayside Bat Group, eventually collecting sounds from 13 of the UK’s 18 bat species. Eight of those species feature on the finished album, their calls processed into beats, melodies and textures, with Tuulikki’s voice woven through them to create what the artists describe as a human-bat hybrid sound world.

Perman said he had wrongly assumed the species would sound broadly similar, but found the variety “astounding”. “The lesser horseshoe bat produces the most beautiful rippling calls that wouldn’t be out of place on a dub record, while the Daubenton’s bat creates amazing syncopated rhythms that sound like a jazz drummer,” he told Positive News.

The first version of the project became a series of outdoor “silent bat raves”, where audiences danced through headphones at dusk while bats few above them. Now the music has been reworked as a full-length vinyl and digital album, released on 28 August through Glasgow independent label KIN-TU.

The artists hope the record can do more than surprise listeners. Bats are crucial to ecosystems, but remain surrounded by unease and superstition. Perman said he was shocked by a recent Bat Conservation Trust survey which found that 46% of people in the UK hold negative feelings about them.

The lesser horseshoe bat produces calls that wouldn’t sound out of place on a dub record

Echo in the Dark is not trying to change that through a lecture. “Dance music has always been a space where people can come together, lose themselves in the moment, and feel part of something bigger,” said Perman. “We hope the album can use that power to nurture a different kind of relationship with the more-than-human world – one rooted in curiosity and care rather than fear.”

The dream, he said, is simple: for someone who has never given bats much thought to put on the record and come away feeling differently. “If it sends even a handful of listeners out into the night to listen for bats, or to support bat conservation, that feels like a genuinely positive outcome.”

Daily Mirror

Fans claim it is one of the best crime dramas on TV right now

High Potential fans have discovered an ideal binge-watch while waiting for the hit crime drama to return.

R.J. Decker has been described as the ‘best detective show‘ by some, as they eagerly anticipate the return of the Kaitlin Olson-starring series.

High Potential is expected to make a comeback with its third season sometime in early 2027. That was after it caused a stir following a double cliffhanger in its final episode.

Production is underway, with new showrunners at the helm promising to deliver more of the crime-solving adventures fans have grown to love. In the meantime, though, the US network has produced another crime drama with a similar vibe, and so far, audiences have given it their mark of approval.

R.J. Decker is aired on the same channel as High Potential, that means that it is also available in the same place for UK based viewers. All episodes of R.J. Decker are accessible via Disney+.

According to its synopsis, the series follows Decker, a former newspaper photographer who is trying to start a new life as a private investigator in South Florida after spending some time behind bars.

Episodes across the first season see him tackling cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre, with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, his former cellmate-turned confidant, and a shadowy woman from his past.

The story is based on Carl Hiaasen’s novel Double Whammy and was created for the screen by Rob Doherty. Doherty previously made the Sherlock Holmes-inspired series Elementary.

It’s only got one season out so far but has the same feel as High Potential. I don’t want to share too much if you haven’t seen it, but I recommend checking it out.”

One replied with a confession as they said: “I really liked it!! I honestly liked it better than High Potential season 2”

While R.J. Decker has not managed to score as highly on Rotten Tomatoes as High Potential, fans are full of praise for it. One posted: “Best detective show on TV in a long time! I like that there is a mystery that wraps up each week with the underlying story about his conviction. They capture the Florida ambiance well and RJ is believable and you find yourself rooting for him and his family.”

Another added: “There’s nothing to NOT like about RJ Decker. It’s just a fantastic series. Very rewatchable as well. Excellent cast led by Scott Speedman and very well-written. The soundtrack nails it in every episode.”

While someone else commented: “Riveting crime drama that exceeds expectations. RJ Decker is a gripping, brilliantly crafted series that delivers everything you could want in a crime drama, sharp writing, compelling characters, and nonstop intrigue.”

They continued: “The show masterfully blends suspense, mystery, and emotional depth, with RJ Decker standing out as a complex, charismatic lead whose intelligence and determination keep you invested from start to finish.”

Met Office forecasts highs of 28C for York amid heat alert

The Met Office has forecast highs of 28C for York on Tuesday (August 4).

It comes as the heat health warning has been issued for York by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) from Monday until Wednesday.

UKHSA has warned the latest high temperatures could put extra pressure on the NHS, with more vulnerable people likely to require medical treatment.

Forecasters expect temperatures in York to peak on Tuesday then sit between 19C and 22C throughout the week and into the weekend.

The Met Office has forecast sunny intervals throughout the week with the chance of showers overnight.

It comes after Met Office statistics revealed England and Wales have recorded their driest July on record.

Just Yorkshire and the North East remain in normal status, with all of Wales and half of England officially in drought.

Met Office experts have warned weather conditions in August are not looking favourable for delivering the kind of sustained rain needed to reverse the dry conditions.

The extreme summer has hit Europe-wide, with wildfires raging across France and Spain, in blazes that analysis shows are made more likely by climate change.

The UK is facing the impacts of increasingly extreme weather such as droughts and heatwaves fuelled by human-caused climate change, which is caused mostly by burning fossil fuels.

Polly Ashmore, of the UKHSA, said: “Periods of hot weather can result in serious health outcomes, especially for older adults, and it is therefore important that everyone takes sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.

“We are urging health and social care services in affected regions to ensure they are prepared, and reminding people to look out for elderly relatives, neighbours and those with underlying health conditions, making sure they are aware of the forecast and following the necessary advice.

“Simple steps such as staying hydrated, avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day, and keeping your home cool are some of the key ways to help keep yourself and others safe during periods of hot weather.”

The prime minister’s official spokesman has defended Andy Burnham over questions from journalists that the drought was not a priority for him.

He said Mr Burnham had spoken and made announcements on a number of different issues including the cost of living, devolution, social care, migration and defence “but clearly he’s only been in post briefly”.

He said the government took climate change seriously, and was working with farmers, the Environment Agency and the water sector to manage the impacts of the exceptionally dry weather.

And amid rumours Mr Burnham may relax Labour’s stance against new North Sea drilling, the spokesman added that the prime minister had been clear the government will take “pragmatic approach”, with oil and gas a part of the mix.

But the only way to bring bills down for good is by taking control with “clean homegrown power to deliver energy security”, he said.

Ariana’s appearance has come under scrutiny in recent months, especially following the release of her new music video, Petal.

She has publicly insisted that she’s healthy but that didn’t stop fans from airing concern about her alarmingly thin frame.

Jameela Jamil wrote online: ‘This poor woman is possibly dying right in front of us. This outfit is designed to accentuate the thinness for discourse.

‘Her team are thoroughly irresponsible for not guiding her away from this deeply damaging image for her young fans to see so glamorized.’

After some were upset with Jameela’s comments she then in a later post defended herself saying she ‘prays that Ariana recovers’.

Spanish socialist politician called to replace ‘racists’ with migrants and vowed to ensure they were allowed to vote months before 60,000 Moroccans invaded Ceuta

Podemos' Irene Montero asking migrants not to leave Spanish people 'alone with fascists'

A video has emerged of a Spanish socialist politician calling to replace Spanish ‘racists’ and ‘fascists’ with migrants, vowing to ensure they would be allowed to vote only months before 60,000 migrants invaded Ceuta.

Irene Montero, the former Spanish Minister of Equality and member of the hard-left Podemos party appeared in a video from earlier this year pleading for support from ‘migrants’ and ‘people of colour.’

‘Please don’t leave us alone with all these fascists. We absolutely want you to vote. We’ve managed to get you papers, and now we want regularisation.

‘Next, we’re going to get you citizenship, or change the law so you can vote.

‘I hope the replacement theory helps us rid this country of fascists and racists to replace them with with migrants and working-class people.

‘Of course I want there to be a replacement of fascists, racists and freeloaders, and I want us to do it with the working class of this country, regardless of their skin colour, whether they’re Chinese, Black or brown. Together with all the working-class comrades in this country.’

Montero, currently a Member of the European Parliament, was one of the loudest voices in favour of Spain’s regularisation of around 500,000 undocumented migrants.

‘Providing rights is the answer to racism,’ Montero previously said.

Spain’s mass regularisation programme came into place in April, with migrants queueing for hours across the country to receive documentation, with some sleeping on the streets as fights broke out in the crowds.

More recently, Spain’s Supreme Court ruled that migrants intercepted at sea while attempting to reach the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla cannot be summarily returned to Morocco.

The new immigration rules led to 60,000 people swimming from Morocco into the Spanish city of Ceuta on Thursday.

The chaos in Ceuta also spread to Spain’s second North African enclave of Melilla on Friday.

The African enclaves have been enduring days of chaos with cars torched and migrants forcing their way into buildings after the unprecedented influx on Thursday.

Extraordinary footage showed huge numbers of people sprinting up beaches, swimming ashore and dispersing into the streets of Ceuta, which borders Morocco, with some shouting ‘Long live Spain.’

In response to what citizens of Ceuta have called an invasion, Montero took to her social media on Friday to write:

‘Let’s always treat people as people, even in the most difficult moments, and not like cockroaches or Amazon packages. Neither you nor anyone else would risk their own life, or their family’s, by migrating unless they absolutely had to. They are no different.’

‘Spain and Europe have spent years paying Morocco, Libya and Mauritania so that they are the ones who “deal with” these people, allowing us to claim that we are full democracies.’

‘And if you pay a dictatorship like Morocco to do your dirty work, when Morocco wants more, or when the US or Israel tells it to, it stops doing it in order to blackmail you.’

‘None of this would happen if there were legal and safe routes for people to enter, and if we stopped depending on murderous dictatorships for our migration policy.’

Meanwhile, locals in Ceuta have described living in fear, as shops were closed and people hid in their homes.

Salvador Ortega, a resident of the enclave, told the Daily Mail that locals are accustomed to seeing small numbers of migrants cross the border, but said the latest arrivals amount to what he described as an ‘invasion’, leaving many residents fearful and uncertain.

‘There are helicopters and ambulances and police everywhere. This is an unsustainable situation that has all the marks of a national emergency, but [Sanchez] is not ready to admit fault with this premeditated invasion.

‘We need the military, from all over Spain and also from the EU. We need help from the EU. The situation is disastrous, especially for those of us in the midst of it.’

Sanchez is facing growing criticism for his migration policies, sparking protests against him in the enclave and across Spain.

Videos from Friday show the PM arriving in Ceuta to boos and jeers from locals chanting ‘Pedro Sanchez, son of a ****.’

Meanwhile, some analysts have suggested that Morocco might have allowed migrants to cross the border to put diplomatic pressure on Spain, which has recently improved ties with Rabat’s arch-enemy neighbouring Algeria.

And arrivals in Ceuta alleged that Moroccan police officers encouraged them as they journeyed towards the enclave.

Mohammed Ahmidho, 37, who heard about the surge of migrants into Spain via social media, said he heard officers saying ‘Come to Spain’ as he neared the border.

On Sunday, tensions rose further in Ceuta when police clashed with groups of migrants.

Video footage showed a group of migrants carrying an injured man wrapped in a blanket who they said had been assaulted by police, while shouting ‘Allahu Akbar’.

Clashes followed, with footage showing Spanish National Police officers carrying batons and charging towards migrants during the demonstration.

The EU said it would hold a video call on Tuesday after 22 bloc members issued a joint open letter calling for an urgent meeting to agree a speedy coordinated response, and to prevent further uncontrolled crossings.

Meanwhile, Sanchez, in a letter to EU leaders, blasted the ‘selfish’ reaction of some EU countries.

Following the events on Thursday, Italy‘s government said it was considering ‘extraordinary measures’ including closing the open border Schengen agreement with Spain.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said: ‘The images coming from Ceuta are striking and demonstrate, once again, that uncontrolled illegal immigration poses a concrete threat to the security of Europe’s borders.’

France said it will tighten its borders with Spain, with the interior minister giving ‘instructions to immediately step up controls’ across their borders.

Finland said it backs an Italian call for Spain to be excluded from Europe’s passport-free Schengen area.

‘Spain has completely failed to protect the Schengen Area’s external border from infiltration. This cannot continue,’ Finnish interior minister Mari Rantanen said on X.

German chancellor Friedrich Merz demanded Friday that Morocco ‘take back illegal migrants immediately’.

The film is an adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic the Odyssey, which sees the titular Greek King embark on a perilous journey home after the Trojan War in a bid to reunite with his beloved wife Penelope.

Matt is starring as the titular hero Odysseus, while Devil Wears Prada icon Anne Hathaway plays his devoted queen, who is forced to fend off potential suitors in her husband’s absence.

While Charlize’s Calypso is the nymph who keeps Odysseus trapped on her island, Ogygia, for seven years after the Trojan War.

Nolan has reached a career high with his epic take on Homer’s The Odyssey, with five star reviews for the star-studded movie flooding in from around the globe soon after it was released.

The Odyssey has achieved a near-perfect score on review-aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes with a current standing of 99 per cent.

That 99 per cent score places Nolan’s 13th feature film at the top of the pile of his past movies with The Dark Knight trailing behind with a 94 per cent critic score.

The reviews for The Odyssey are almost universal in their soaring praise and five star ratings.

The Daily Mail’s Brian Viner declared that ‘Nolan’s film – its star-studded cast led by Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Zendaya – is a glorious cinematic experience, a triumph both of story-telling and movie-making.’

Peter Bradshaw for the Guardian in another five star review went one step further, writing that ‘Nolan goes god-tier with a breathtaking epic of men, monsters and moral metamorphosis.’

‘This is a film with thrilling ambition, boldness, seriousness, generosity and flair. There are some broad-brush moments in the dialogue, yes, but even these are applied with a muscular flourish.’

Any minor criticisms hone in on Nolan’s choice to modernise the dialogue and deviate from his source material.

John Nugent for Empire writes that ‘it is as elegant and economical an adaptation as it’s possible to make of such a lengthy tome, and you don’t need a Classics degree to understand it. Some purists may bristle at the liberties taken with the text, with significant omissions.’

‘The dialogue inevitably loses some of the poetry and lyricism of the original text; no dactylic hexameter here. But what it loses in faithfulness, it gains in visual and structural poetry.’

Writing for The Times though, historian Mary Beard said ‘I liked that Telemachus (Tom Holland) refers to Odysseus as ‘Dad’ (though I suspect some viewers may feel differently). This is an epic, and a myth, in the here and now, not set in a hoary past.’

David Rooney for The Hollywood Reporter calls it ‘a meditative action movie both immense and intimate, albeit one whose flow is impeded by the inherently episodic nature of the nonlinear source material and some questionable casting choices.’

Rooney singles out Tom Holland, who plays the son of Matt Damon’s Odysseus, Telemachus, deciding that ‘while he is always an appealing screen presence, he is wrong for the role.’

‘Like [Robert] Pattinson, the Brit actor plays his character with an American accent. But he comes across as, well, Peter Parker in a tunic, sapping the gravitas from Telemachus’ path to maturity.’

Deadline’s Gregory Nussen disagreed though, calling Holland’s performance ‘his strongest one to date.’

‘His performance certainly seems tinged with the courageous naivety of Spider-Man, insisting on trying to influence those much more cunning and physically capable than he,’ he wrote. ‘Holland may be playing a child, but his performance is bursting with a newfound maturity.’

Other critics hailed the female actors.

Nolan recently defended his decision to cast Kenyan actress Nyong’o as Helen of Troy, after Musk called the casting ‘historically inaccurate.’

The likes of Clarisse Loughrey in her five star review for The Independent said the film is ‘brought to life by a cast of seemingly thousands – but it’s the women (among them Anne Hathaway and Samantha Morton) who steal the show.’

RogerEbert.com Editor-at-Large Matt Zoller Seitz meanwhile called Nolan’s casting ‘not just defensible but inspiring.’

Presenter Tony Livesey leaves BBC Radio 5 Live after David Sullivan allegations

Tony Livesey was editor-in-chief of the Daily Sport and Sunday Sport. A woman, named only as Florence, claims it was he who organised her visit to Sullivan's house where he allegedly coerced her into sex. He has left BBC Radio 5 Live today

Tony Livesey has today left BBC Radio 5 Live after he was named in a Panorama investigation by a glamour model who claims she was forced to have sex with David Sullivan to get work.

The channel’s controller Heidi Dawson told staff that the 62-year-old – who previously edited the Daily Sport – had ‘decided to leave’ the role after 16 years.

His departure came after a woman, known only as Florence, claimed David Sullivan ‘took away her innocence’ when he allegedly pressured her into sleeping with him in 1999.

She told Panorama that the billionaire West Ham co-owner forced her to have sex with him at his mansion when she was 20 and Sullivan was 50, allegedly promising her work in return.

Florence alleged the meeting, which she believed would be a professional casting and job interview, only came about after she met Tony Livesey in the Daily Sport newsroom and he personally telephoned Sullivan to arrange it.

She told Panorama: ‘He [Tony Livesey] picked up his phone on this messy desk and called Sullivan. He went: “Have you got your diary there… can you do this date?” I was like: “I can do that date.” He then said: “Write it in – you’re going to see David Sullivan”.’

She added: ‘He [Sullivan] took away my innocence. What he did set me off on a spiral that went for many, many, many, many years.’

Livesey, who said he had ‘no recollection’ of the alleged incident, stepped away from his late-night show following the Panorama’s release on June 8.

BBC Radio 5 Live controller Heidi Dawson today sent staff a glowing note about Livesey’s career at the station, with no mention of the Panorama programme.

‘I wanted to let you know that Tony Livesey has decided to leave his presenting role on 5 Live,’ she said.

‘I know many of you have also really enjoyed working with Tony, and we wish him well for all his future endeavours.’

The naming of Mr Livesey by one of eight alleged victims of David Sullivan in June was a major headache for new BBC Director General, Matt Brittin.

Mr Brittin had just taken over from Tim Davie who battled a series of serious sex scandals involving BBC stars including Huw Edwards, Tim Westwood and most recently Scott Mills.

Florence claims she met Mr Livesey, then editor of the Daily and Sunday Sport newspapers, who then telephoned Sullivan to arrange a date for her to visit the businessman’s house.

Eight days later she went to Sullivan’s mansion in Theydon Bois, Essex.

He allegedly told her at the meeting in his office that she would be one of his ‘regular girls’ – working as a glamour model in his newspapers and magazines – if they had sex.

She claims he then manoeuvred her into one of his bedrooms, pulled his tracksuit bottoms down and forced himself on her.

‘I’m 99.9 per cent sure I said: “I don’t want to.” It was almost like a transaction… That’s how it felt,’ she told Panorama.

Mr Livesey claimed in his newspaper memoir Babes, Booze, Orgies and Aliens that he and Sullivan came up with the ‘Countdown to 16’ pornographic feature.

The Sunday Sport used revealing images of young girls to tease the publication of topless pictures when they turned 16 – which was at the time the minimum age someone could appear nude.

It was raised to the age of 18 in 2004.

Mr Livesey told BBC Panorama that he has ‘no recollection’ of the alleged incident Florence described and it was ‘not part’ of his job to do so.

He said he had ‘great sympathy for a woman who may have become a victim’, but rejected any suggestion that he had played ‘any role whatsoever in that scenario’ and said he found the allegation ‘abhorrent’.

He also denied that he was behind the ‘Countdown to 16’ pornographic feature.

Instead he told the BBC that it was ‘categorically’ not his idea and that much of his book was actually fictionalised in order to make it appear that he ‘was at the centre of all stories’, when he wasn’t.

Sullivan vehemently denies claims he is a sexual predator and said, through his lawyers, that the layout of his house makes Florence’s claims ‘implausible’.

In April, Sullivan’s right-hand woman at West Ham, Karren Brady, quit the club.

She has not commented on the Panorama investigation and was not mentioned at all on last night’s show.

Baroness Brady remains an aide to Lord Sugar and mentor to candidates on BBC hit The Apprentice.

Mr Livesey has built himself a career as a successful broadcaster since leaving Sullivan’s newspaper empire – but was not on his regular evening show last night.

Stand-in host Qasa Alom began the programme with a report about the Panorama investigation.

Two hours before Livesey was due to go on air Florence claimed on the Panorama documentary that he had put her in touch with Sullivan.

Mr Livesey was a presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live for almost 17 years, having joined the station in June 2009.

He initially hosted the late-night show, then went on to co-host the Weekend Breakfast and Drive programmes. His last show was the late-night phone-in show from Monday to Thursday.

David Sullivan has been accused of preying on a string of women, some in their teens, during his time as a newspaper chief.

Sources who worked in the industry at the time reportedly said Sullivan’s nickname was ‘B**w Job or No Job’, due to his reputation for expecting sexual favours in exchange for access to the vast opportunities he could offer aspiring models.

Sullivan resigned from his post at West Ham after learning of the investigation that has collected the allegations, which span decades and date back to the 1980s.

Seven women gave detailed accounts of experiences they claim to have had with Sullivan as young models seeking work on his Sunday Sport and Daily Sport newspapers.

They accused Sullivan of sexually exploitative and predatory behaviour, including pressuring them for sex or oral sex during business meetings by suggesting it would aid their careers. Sullivan denies the allegations.

The BBC also reports that Sullivan, 77, has separately admitted to paying for sex in the 1990s with a girl who he understood to be 16 or 17 years old.

He was in his 40s at the time, and it only became illegal to pay for sex with a 16 or 17-year-old in 2003.

Sullivan said he ‘categorically’ denies all the allegations, and vowed to sue any media outlet that repeats them. Sullivan currently retains his 38.8 per cent stake in West Ham.

Sacha Wall is the only alleged victim of Sullivan’s predatory behaviour who wanted to be named.

She claims that, as a 24-year-old aspiring model, Sullivan tried to pressure her into a sexual encounter by suggesting it would advance her career.

Ms Wall said that in 1998, she was invited to Sullivan’s Essex mansion for what she had believed would be a business meeting.

She recalled being surprised to find him dressed very informally, in flip-flops, red shorts and a T-shirt.

Sullivan leafed through her modelling portfolio while repeating ‘very nice, very nice’, in a way that made her uncomfortable, Ms Wall claims.

She says he then instructed her to follow him upstairs and undress down to her underwear – which she did, because she was interested in seeking topless modelling work.

He then allegedly told her to come and sit next to him – at which point she moved away and put her bra back on.

When she told him she would not sleep with him, she claims he looked ‘very shocked’ and replied: ‘What, not even a b**w job?’

Ms Wall said she was ‘really scared’ to find the door locked when she tried to leave, but that Sullivan opened it when she demanded to be let out.

She later appeared in his Sport newspaper, but said she was often given the worst jobs.

A woman, whose name has been changed to Anna by the publishers of the investigation, appeared in the Sport the month after her 17th birthday.

She entered the Miss Sport competition, which involved sending photos into the newspaper.

She was then invited to an event at an Essex nightclub, which she attended with her mother as a chaperone.

At the venue – where the entertainment included women dancing on tabletops surrounded by large groups of ‘touchy-feely’ men – she claims she was invited to go for a private chat with Sullivan.

He allegedly asked the 17-year-old to give him a ‘b**w job’, promising he would make her a ‘star’ – but she refused.

In another alleged case, Florence, then 20, said she went to his Essex home, dressed smartly and with her boyfriend for support.

It was her who claimed Tony Livesey had helped organise it and she believed it would be a formal job interview.

Sullivan allegedly took her upstairs and tried to initiate sex – with Florence attempting to resist by saying she was on her period and that her partner was waiting for her in the house.

But Sullivan pressed on anyway, she claims.

She said she would be forever ‘haunted’ by the image of Sullivan lifting his pinky into the air and saying: ‘It’s alright, I’ll only put it in a little bit,’ before penetrating her.

Florence said she was almost certain she was telling him she did not want to have intercourse, but could not say how loudly.

She claims that he promised she would be one of his ‘regular girls’ in his Sport newspapers if she had sex with him – and that she was indeed subsequently offered work.

She said she believes Sullivan’s alleged predatory behaviour went unchallenged for so long because was ‘untouchable’, adding: ‘He might not look it on paper, but my God, is that man powerful.’

Sullivan, who once described himself as a ‘collector of women, like some people collect stamps’, was a titanic figure for anyone hoping to crack the glamour modelling industry in the 1990s.

He began selling photographs of topless women in the 1970s through a mail-order business from an east London warehouse.

This soon progressed into selling pornographic magazines and, in 1973, Sullivan pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiring to publish and post obscene materials.

But Sullivan was undeterred, and his porn empire rapidly expanded, until by the end of the decade he was selling more than a million porn magazines each month.

He went on to launch Sunday Sport in 1986 – which featured topless models on many of the pages, among sensational tabloid stories – and later Daily Sport after enjoying enormous success.

A notorious feature of his newspapers was the ‘Countdown to 16’, which chronicled the number of days until a schoolgirl’s 16th birthday, and then pictured her topless when the day arrived.

In his resignation statement, Sullivan said: ‘I have recently become aware that factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are due to be broadcast and published.

‘The false allegations levelled against me have been sensationalised by the media. After a lifetime spent building businesses in the adult industry in which I have met thousands of women, it is sadly inevitable that a small number of improper conduct claims are being made against me.

‘I categorically deny these claims.

‘I am a private man, and those who personally and professionally know the real David Sullivan, not the caricature invented by the tabloids, know exactly who I am and what I stand for. I am absolutely not the person the media has decided to paint me as.

‘I have not been provided with any proper explanation as to how these individuals or their claims were independently verified or assessed for credibility prior to publication. I believe that the entire process has been fundamentally unfair and completely lacking in any due impartiality.

‘I will be suing the BBC for libel, along with any other media outlet that repeats any libelous allegations.’
