Newspaper headlines: ‘Gaslit by the King’ and ‘McCann suspect’s book plot’

Published

"It's not every day you get gaslit by the King" reads the headline on the front page of the Mail on Sunday.

There is “fury” over plans for a suspect in the disappearance of Madeline McCann to write a tell-all book, according to the Sunday Mirror. Convicted rapist Christian Brueckner, who was released from prison in Germany last year after serving an unrelated sentence, “wants to cash in on the mystery with his side of the story”, the paper says.

UFC 331 LIVE: Joshua Van vs Alexandre Pantoja 2 start time, undercard, fight updates and results tonight

More thoughts on Van vs Pantoja 1

Just 26 seconds into their showdown in Las Vegas, flyweight king Pantoja had suffered a ‘freak’ injury, leaving him clutching his arm while laying on the canvas and wagging his finger at Van – standing above the Brazilian – as the referee waved off the fight.

And after being escorted out of the cage, Pantoja was immediately treated, with backstage reporter Megan Olivi revealing a left-shoulder dislocation.

When Van caught a head kick from Pantoja and shoved him to the canvas, he was showing sharp defence after surviving a few early, chaotic exchanges – the type that Pantoja loves so dearly.

Was Van trying to injure Pantoja’s arm, when he shoved him away? No. Can he take credit for hurting Pantoja enough that the latter could not continue? Yes. Was it as definitive an ending as fans wanted? No. Was it a fair way for Van to win, in a sport as frantic and perilous as MMA? Yes.

Featherweight action next

Thre prelims continue with a 145lb tilt between Michael Aswell Jr and Joosang Yoo.

Some of you may remember Aswell Jr from his loss to Liverpool’s Luke Riley at UFC London this March.

Following that points loss, he was also outpointed in his last fight – against Gaston Bolanos.

The strange grudge driving Pantoja to revenge against Van

An ecstatic Joshua Van scaled the Octagon wall in a mad scramble. Although an athlete with impeccable control over his body, here he was a young man incapable of suppressing the grin that was stretching his fresh face. At only 24 years old, he had just become the youngest active champion in the UFC – the second-youngest in history, in fact, a matter of months behind the ‘great’ Jon Jones.

It was because Van hadn’t actually beaten Pantoja, people said.

This is the story of Van vs Pantoja 1:

In the first regular prelim of the night, we just saw Gandra stop Diaz by swarming him with wild hooks, leading Diaz to drop against the fence and turtle up.

They weren’t the most-technical strikes from Gandra, but they overwhelmed Diaz, and the ref stepped in with Diaz defenceless on the mat.

MAIL ON SUNDAY COMMENT: Yes, Sir Jim, we are on the slide. Now the Right must toil to save us…

Published

Billionaire Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, says the UK is 'on the slide' and criticised the country's tax regime after moving to Monaco

The billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, says that Britain is ‘on the slide’.

He has a point.

Sir Jim, who moved to Monaco to escape the UK’s ferocious tax regime, says: ‘We had the greatest empire in the world. We were a great people. We won two world wars.

‘We’re good, honest folk. But unfortunately, at the moment, I think the UK is on the slide. It’s quite difficult to see how we arrest it.’

Sir Jim is by no means the only wealthy person to look at these conditions and leave.

The ever-growing tax rates are self-defeating in practice. The wealthy simply will not stay around to be used as cash machines by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Some other country ends up benefiting from their wealth and their enterprise, at a more intelligent rate of tax.

The pro-Labour Left, mostly composed of public-sector workers on generous salaries and sitting on fat tax-funded pensions, will of course denounce Sir Jim’s words, so confirming his point.

Billionaire Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, says the UK is ‘on the slide’ and criticised the country’s tax regime after moving to Monaco

A large part of this country’s political class has for many years been committed to high taxes on the productive and the enterprising, to pay for generous conditions for people who are neither productive nor enterprising themselves.

Of course some spending is necessary. The old and the sick must be cared for.

Those thrown out of work through no fault of their own need support. Good public services are essential for a functioning economy and society.

The high-tax faction will always speechify about the NHS, because who does not want a good NHS? But high spending does not solve all problems. It is not a magic ointment.

The NHS itself is far from perfect. And there are so many other areas of the government sector where the public experiences poor service, delay, arrogance, incompetence and failure.

And then there is the swelling part of the economy where people are paid generous sums on the basis of supposed sickness that may – let us put this politely – be questionable.

And it is not just billionaire business leaders who are hurt by the British tax system’s greed for other people’s money.

Right at the other end of the wealth spectrum, hundreds of thousands of young men and women struggle to find work because the Labour government has placed a punitive tax on employment by increasing employers’ National Insurance rates.

And so we are indeed on the slide. Any serious patriotic political leader must know the country needs to reduce its tax burden, and its borrowing, if it is to stay solvent and efficient.

As we report today, the Treasury is close to meltdown as it tries to raise money to sustain its huge commitments and pay the colossal interest on our existing borrowing.

It is no good cutting one tax and raising another, or indulging in short-term tax reductions that cannot be sustained.

If we want to arrest the slide we must all, Left and Right, rich and poor, grasp that we must relearn the ancient rules of thrift and prudence.

Andy Burnham, teetering on the edge of an election, dare not do this.

The parties of the Right must therefore tackle it, and soon.

Sleeping for nine hours a night can lead to an early death… and has a higher mortality rate than getting less than six hours of shut eye, study finds

Published

on

A study has found that sleeping for more than nine hours a night is associated with a higher risk of death, while seven to eight hours was linked to the lowest mortality rate (stock image)

After getting through the day there is nothing better than turning off the lights and curling up under the duvet.

But such a simple pleasure may cost you the ultimate price – with a study finding that sleeping for nine hours a night brings an increased risk of early death.

While getting seven to eight hours of shut-eye is the sweet spot for overall health, spending longer in bed is associated with a 17 per cent higher chance of dying from any cause.

The precise reasons for this are not well understood.

Yet those who sleep for longer are more likely to have high blood pressure, which plays a role in heart disease and strokes, and they may suffer from more inflammation than most.

Too much sleep can also interfere with the body’s internal clock, hormonal regulation and the immune system.

Researchers tracked the sleeping habits of more than 3,000 people for 30 years.

The mortality rate was lowest for those who slept seven to eight hours a night, with 10.57 deaths for every 1,000 people over the three decades.

But sleeping fewer than six hours had a mortality rate which was slightly higher, at 10.97. And for those getting more than nine hours, the rate was higher again at 11.27.

The Taiwanese researchers who carried out the study say sleep should be measured by medics in order to identify people at risk of premature death.

In the Journal of Sleep Research, they wrote: ‘We found that long sleep duration was associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality, and blood pressure accounted for a modest proportion of this association.

‘These findings may have implications for identifying individuals at increased health risk – sleep duration assessment may be incorporated into routine health check-ups to help identify individuals at potentially increased health risk.’

Too much sleep has long been linked to issues such as heart problems and type 2 diabetes, obesity, poorer memory and brain health.

Adults are advised to get between seven and nine hours of sleep every night.

Earl Spencer claims future king Charles stamped his foot and told him ‘you’re lucky to be inheriting so young’ on day of his father’s funeral

Published

Earl Spencer and then Prince Charles during the official opening of a fountain built in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, in London's Hyde Park

The future king stamped his foot and behaved like a ‘petulant child’ during an extraordinary conversation with Earl Spencer more than 30 years ago, Princess Diana‘s brother claims.

The earl claims that on the day of his father’s funeral in April 1992, a frustrated Prince Charles told him that he was ‘so lucky’ to be inheriting the vast Spencer estate while he was still in his twenties.

The then Prince of Wales allegedly complained that, in contrast, his parents, the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, were treating him ‘like a child’.

‘At this he stamped his foot in emphasis,’ Earl Spencer writes in his forthcoming memoir. ‘I have to say, very much like a child; and a petulant one, at that.’

The bizarre exchange took place after the death of John Spencer, the 8th Earl Spencer.

At that point Charles Spencer, then aged 27, inherited the family’s 13,000-acre estate at Althorp, Northamptonshire, as the 9th earl.

Charles Spencer, now 62, recalls how after his father’s funeral service at a church in Northamptonshire, he, along with Prince Charles and Princess Diana gathered ‘rather awkwardly’ in Althorp’s oak-panelled tapestry sitting room.

He writes: ‘I shared that I had found it so moving to see my father’s coffin being borne into the church by his six longest-serving male members of staff that I had started to cry.

‘I was unsure if I had heard him right. ‘I’m sorry, sir?’

‘You’re just so lucky – you know, inheriting when you’re so young!’ ‘

Earl Spencer claims that, ‘warming to his theme’, Prince Charles then added: ‘You’re inheriting this place in your twenties.

‘And, I mean, I’m 43…and I employ 50 people… but my parents insist on treating me like – like a child!’

Patrick Clancy says he ‘did the best I could’ in supporting ex-wife before she killed their three children

Published

on

Patrick Clancy says he believes he did 'the best I could' in supporting his ex-wife Lindsay's mental struggles before she killed their three children in 2023

Patrick Clancy said he believes he did ‘the best I could’ in supporting his ex-wife Lindsay’s mental struggles before she killed their three children.

The grieving father, 38, said he suffers with the heartbreak of his children’s deaths ‘every day’ in an interview with 60 Minutes, which airs in full on Sunday evening.

In a snippet of the highly anticipated interview, CBS correspondent Ross Douthat asked Clancy if he feels that he could have prevented the tragedy if he had acted differently.

‘I think I did the best I could with what I had at the time,’ he responded. ‘I live with the outcome. I live with it every day.’

Lindsay Clancy admitted to fatally strangling their three children – Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and eight-month-old Callan – in their Massachusetts home in January 2023.

She pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, and her high-profile murder trial ended in a controversial mistrial earlier this month, with jury deliberations concluding in an 11-1 deadlock.

Patrick, who testified at her trial, has since remarried fertility doctor Rachel Danis, 37, and he relocated to New York City while Lindsay has been confined to a psychiatric facility.

Danis joined Patrick in his 60 Minutes interview, and in a previously released segment, she said the true story of the children’s deaths became ‘twisted’ amid public scrutiny on the case.

Clancy faces a retrial after a jury of nine women and three men were unable to agree on whether she was guilty of the murders or manslaughter

Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial ended in a controversial mistrial earlier this month, with her jury ending in an 11-1 deadlock as one holdout juror refused to acquit her by reason of insanity

Patrick Clancy sat for the interview after he remained largely out of the spotlight during Lindsay’s murder trial, and Douthat told viewers that they should expect to see ‘a portrait of Patrick’s life in the aftermath of this incredible tragedy.’

‘I think from the beginning, he’s been focused on trying to make sure that the memory of his children stays alive and stays close to the center of this story,’ Douthat said.

‘Obviously, there’s been so many debates, so much controversy about all of the different issues around this story.’

Danis told Douthat in the interview that she met Patrick after the children’s deaths, saying she ‘was just a girl that met a guy running in Central Park on a really cold Saturday.’

Danis went on to hail Patrick, 38, as ‘the most selfless father and supportive partner.’

The couple married in April in an intimate ceremony at the historic Ladies Pavilion overlooking The Lake in Central Park before celebrating with family and friends at nearby restaurant Sarabeth’s.

In a previous promotional clip for the highly anticipated interview, Patrick told 60 Minutes that he talks to his late children in an attempt to find solace after their deaths.

Asked what he says to them, Patrick responded, ”Help me’… All the time.’

The interview comes after Patrick faced a barrage of sickening threats and accusations by online sleuths during the trial, including some who callously accused him of killing his own children despite Lindsay confessing to the crime.

In a statement through his lawyer after Lindsay’s mistrial, he promised ‘consequences’ for true crime creators who made baseless and cruel allegations.

‘Over the past months, Patrick Clancy and his family have been subjected to a relentless, escalating and destructive defamation campaign,’ the statement read.

‘This campaign of misinformation has been launched and promoted by minor celebrities, so-called influencers and outright conspiracy theorists who appear intent on boosting their own social media profiles and potential profit by publishing what they know to be outright falsehoods that Patrick was somehow involved in the death of his young children and other vile claims.’

Patrick said at the time that the ‘insatiable media coverage’ had created a ‘fever pitch’ of allegations and scrutiny on him, while he continues to deal with the unimaginable loss of his children at the same time.

‘(This) has resulted in real-life threats to his reputation, livelihood, and life,’ his attorney said in his statement.

‘Patrick has no choice but to address this situation – with the clear goal of stopping injurious behavior, creating accountability for lies that are self-serving to the perpetrators, and being able to return his attention to what matters: preserving the memory of Cora, Dawson and Callan Clancy and supporting other women facing perinatal mental health challenges.

‘Enough is enough – this spread of blatant and baseless falsehoods must stop.

‘Those responsible should understand that there will be consequences, and every appropriate measure will be pursued to hold them accountable, including legally. Law enforcement has been notified.’

After Clancy’s high-profile murder trial ended in a deadlock, prosecutors are yet to say if they intend to retry her for murder or offer her a plea deal.

Reform would dodge any Labour ban on foreign donors by ‘setting up a crypto industry union’, senior aide claims

Reform Party leader Nigel Farage (pictured) would bypass any Labour ban on foreign donors by setting up a trade union that would funnel the money, according to one of his most senior aides

Nigel Farage would bypass any Labour ban on foreign donors to his Reform UK party by setting up a trade union that would funnel the money, one of his most senior aides said on Saturday night.

Andy Burnham’s Government reacted to last weekend’s unprecedented £72million donations from two cryptocurrency billionaires, Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne, by pledging to introduce new residency requirements which would retrospectively render the donations unlawful.

Both men had previously been based overseas.

But on Saturday night, Reform UK’s Arron Banks claimed the party would respond by creating a new trade union – provisionally named the Allied Computer & Crypto Workers Union (ACCAW) – which would represent workers in the new IT, AI and cryptocurrency industries.

It would be certified in the UK and therefore comply with Labour’s proposed new laws.

Under an alternative plan, the party would flood other trade unions with a ‘Red Wave’ of Reform supporters to engineer a ‘reverse takeover’ of the organisations.

Reform Party leader Nigel Farage (pictured) would bypass any Labour ban on foreign donors by setting up a trade union that would funnel the money, according to one of his most senior aides

The move would be inspired by the ‘blue wave’ campaign in 2018 in which Mr Banks flooded the Conservative Party with thousands of former UKIP members to push the Conservative Party towards a hard Brexit.

The party says internal polling shows a high level of support for Reform among trade union members.

Mr Banks said ‘the ACCAW would be the first union to politically support the views of its members’ and effectively ‘hoist Labour by its own petard’.

‘Our Red Wave campaign would remove champagne-swilling, socialist union barons who take home massive salaries.

‘Huge numbers of trade union members support Reform, and we aim to mobilise them via a sustained campaign,’ he added.

Man Utd: Michael Carrick has faith in VAR despite derby blunder

Published

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland scores against Manchester United

Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick says he still has faith in the video assistant referee – but added that the apology for the error that led to their defeat in the Manchester derby does not mean much.

Referee’s body Pro Ref issued a formal apology to United within three hours of the end of Manchester City‘s 1-0 victory at Old Trafford.

Neither VAR Matt Donohue nor his assistant Blake Antrobus have been selected for games this weekend after failing to spot City midfielder Enzo Fernandez clearly in an offside position and interfering with play before Erling Haaland’s matchwinner for City.

Carrick was livid after the game, saying it was a “worrying” interpretation of the rules.

And before his side’s Premier League trip to Fulham on Sunday, the United boss was asked if he still had faith in VAR.

“One-off things can happen,” he said.

“At the time it was a pretty big one, we know that. I don’t think I need to go over that. But yes, I’ve got faith in it. It’s the system we work towards and that we use.”

Referee’s chief Howard Webb has been heavily criticised over general officiating standards in the game.

Analysing the incident on ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’, Webb said he was “really disappointed” with the outcome, stating the officials had been too focused on a potential offside against Haaland and had failed to assess Fernandez’s position.

Webb has spoken to United about the situation in an effort to be more accountable.

“The apology doesn’t mean an awful lot,” said Carrick.

“I can appreciate and respect them putting their hands up and saying we got that wrong – it does happen. We just have to deal with it.

“Maybe we get one or two decisions on the law of averages or whatever but that one had a huge impact on the game and that’s why it was particularly tough.”
