Sean ‘Diddy‘ Combs was named on the witness list for Tupac Shakur’s murder trial as the prosecution linked the disgraced mogul to Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis who allegedly orchestrated the killing. 

Opening statements began in the long-awaited trial today over the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed the California Love hitmaker. 

Davis is charged with one count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon with the intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang, as prosecutors seek to implicate him in arranging the shooting. 

The proceedings kicked off in Las Vegas last week, nearly 30 years after the 25-year-old musician was gunned down while riding in the passenger seat of a BMW driven by former Death Row Records boss Suge Knight.

Tupac had been in Las Vegas to watch a Mike Tyson boxing match at the MGM Grand on September 7, 1996, hours before a white Cadillac pulled alongside the car and gunfire erupted. He died from his injuries six days later. 

Davis, 63, a former leader of the South Side Compton Crips, is the only person ever charged in Shakur’s killing. Prosecutors allege he ordered the revenge attack and provided the gun used in the shooting, although they do not claim he pulled the trigger.

Davis has entered a not guilty plea. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison.

Prosecutors name Diddy in opening statements

Chief deputy district attorney Binu Palal named Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs in his opening statement for the prosecution, linking the disgraced mogul to Duane Davis in the 1990s.

Palal said that Davis acted as ‘unofficial security for Sean Combs and his artists when they came out west, in order specifically to ensure there are no problems with Mob Piru and Death Row Records.’

Tupac Shakur was signed to Death Row Records at the time he was shot in 1996 and was affiliated with the Mob Piru gang.

Combs was named on a list of 200 possible witnesses in the trial. He is serving a 50-month sentence at Fort Dix in New Jersey after being convicted of federal prostitution charges last year.

Davis is on trial for murder with use of a deadly weapon in connection with Shakur’s death. The trial continues in Las Vegas.

A new witness, Brent Becker, was sworn in via Zoom. Becker is a retired police officer with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

In 1996, Becker was a detective with the homicide unit.

Witness from the night Tupac was killed is called to the stand

Prosecutors called Ingrid Stokes to the stand.

Stokes was in Las Vegas the evening of September 7, 1996, when Tupac Shakur was killed.

The witness testified that she and some friends were in the city for the Mike Tyson fight that weekend.

The group spotted Suge Knight and Shakur in their BMW after getting into their own car to leave the MGM Grand parking lot.

Stokes said one of her friends knew Knight, and when the group pulled up alongside them, the Death Row Records boss invited them to Club 662 and instructed them to follow his car.

She told jurors that as her friend was preparing to switch seats with her so she could drive, she heard multiple gunshots. Stokes said all of her friends immediately ducked.

She testified that their vehicle almost collided with the BMW as they tried to flee, and that they did not follow the shooters.

Las Vegas police officer recalls interaction with Tupac Shakur in ambulance after he was shot

Garry Dale, a former Las Vegas Metro Police Department officer, recalled his interaction with the rapper as he rode in an ambulance to the hospital after he was shot.

‘I was trying to talk to him to find out what had happened, gather information to see who had fired at them,’ he told prosecutor Marc DiGiacomo.

‘He was still talking, and I was trying to convince him to tell me the name of whoever his assailants were,’ the former officer continued.

Dale testified that Tupac Shakur responded to the effect of: ‘No, we’ll take care of it.’

He was excused after a quick cross-examination by the defense. Michael Sanft asked Dale if he had written a report about his initial traffic stop of Suge Knight and Shakur’s vehicle that night, to which the cop replied: ‘No.’

Defense lawyer Michael Sanft said that his client Duane Davis was known to ‘bull****’ and the state relied heavily on questionable statements made by the defendant.

Sanft said that the detective who worked on the case did not work hard enough to verify his client’s accounts in his 2019 memoir. ‘He treats that book like it’s fact,’ he said.

Davis ‘was never charged for any of what he said during that time period, and it’s because they knew he was full of crap,’ Sanft continued. ‘Otherwise, they would have.’

‘The state cannot prove to you beyond a reasonable doubt the claim that Keffe had anything to do with first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon,’ Sanft said as he finished his opening statements and referred to his client by nickname.

Jurors took notes during opening statements, and there was no visible reaction from the gallery.

A few people were heard chuckling as audio of Duane Davis imitating women screaming at Tupac Shakur was played.

Davis was noticeably still through the first few minutes of the defense’s opening statement and only moved to pour himself a cup of water.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Civil rights advocates on Monday said they asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Texas law requiring public schools to display the Ten Commandments, teeing up a case that could set a new national standard for the limits of state-sponsored religious expression in classrooms.

Over two dozen Texas families represented by the American Civil Liberties Union and other groups petitioned the nation’s highest court to overturn a split decision in April by the conservative-leaning 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. The New Orleans-based appeals court’s 9-8 ruling upheld the Texas law, which requires public school classrooms to display a state-selected version of the Ten Commandments drawn from the King James Bible.

In their Supreme Court brief, the families’ attorneys argue that the law violates basic First Amendment principles governing the separation of church and state.

“The question of whether a state may impose scripture on impressionable, captive-audience children — for nearly every hour of every school day, for up to (13) years — implicates the most fundamental guarantees of the First Amendment and our Nation’s highest ideals,” they wrote.

The 5th Circuit reversed a lower federal court ruling that had blocked approximately a dozen Texas school districts from putting up the posters. Republican Gov. Greg Abbott signed the law, which took effect last September.

Because Texas’ law only requires districts to hang the Ten Commandments if they are donated, conservative groups and individuals began dropping off boxes of posters at campuses across the state as the school year began last year.

“No child is made to recite the Commandments, believe them, or affirm their divine origin,” the 5th Circuit’s ruling says.

The 5th Circuit also ruled in February that Louisiana can enforce its own law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in classrooms.

Republicans in the South have been leading the way in putting the Ten Commandments in classrooms. Louisiana became the first state to pass a requirement in 2024, followed by Arkansas and Texas. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed a similar law earlier this year.

NEW YORK (AP) — Luigi Mangione’s state murder trial in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which was slated to begin Sept. 8, has been postponed indefinitely as his lawyers seek to have the case thrown out on double jeopardy grounds following his guilty plea last week to federal charges.

Judge Gregory Carro issued an order Monday canceling the trial and giving the Manhattan District Attorney’s office, which is prosecuting the state case, until Oct. 9 to respond to the defense’s double jeopardy claims. A hearing will be held on Dec. 10, Carro said, about a week before Mangione is scheduled to be sentenced in the federal case.

Mangione, 28, pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan federal court to a pair of stalking charges and admitted trailing Thompson to UnitedHealth Group’s investor conference and gunning him down outside a Manhattan hotel in 2024. Federal prosecutors said they would seek life in prison when Mangione is sentenced Dec. 18, though federal sentencing guidelines call for a term of 24 to 30 years.

“On the morning of Dec. 4, 2024, I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan, and he died,” Mangione said.

Immediately after his plea, Mangione’s lawyers filed paperwork seeking to have the state case thrown out on double jeopardy and due process grounds. They described him as a “pawn in parallel prosecutions” and accused state and federal prosecutors of “trying to punish him twice for the exact conduct.”

Mangione has pleaded not guilty in the state case, which also carries the possibility of a life sentence.

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office said in a statement that it would fight efforts to end the state case, in part because Mangione’s federal sentence isn’t yet known.

Compared with federal law and that of other states, New York has uncommonly strong protections for defendants facing multiple prosecutions. A state prosecution can be barred if a federal case involving the same course of conduct or criminal transaction ends in a guilty plea or if a jury is sworn.

It will be up to Carro to decide if that applies to Mangione. However Carro rules, his decision will be subject to appeal.

Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges that accused him of traveling across state lines by bus to stalk and kill Thompson and using means such as a cellphone, the internet, interstate highways and staying at a hostel that serves out-of-state customers while planning and carrying out the attack.

But in his new column for the Sun, he summarised his views on hydrogen power after JCB achieved a new world land speed record with a run in its hydrogen-powered Hydromax.

Mr Clarkson write: “I keep being told that hydrogen will never be the fuel of the future.

“It’s too expensive to make, too difficult to transport and too impractical.

“But this week, I watched that JCB car spearing across the salt flats in America at 406mph, and I thought, ‘Yes. Hydrogen is difficult. But there’s a vehicle, powered by normal, internal combustion, and all that’s coming out of the exhaust is water.’

“As JF Kennedy once said: ‘We choose to go to the moon and do the other things not because they are easy, but because they are hard.’”

Set at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, USA, the record saw the Hydromax achieve 406.320mph, measured as an average from two high-speed runs. It’s the fastest that a hydrogen internal combustion car has ever gone.

The first saw the Hydromax reach 400.623mph, while a later run saw the vehicle hit 412.135 mph, which, when averaged, reached that figure of 406.320mph.

With Andy Green OBE – the only person to break the sound barrier on land – behind the wheel, the 32-foot car beat the previous official hydrogen internal combustion speed record by some measure. Set in 2004, it saw a BMW H2R reach 185.5mph.

This latest record also means that the Hydromax has overtaken the 350.092mph set by the JCB Dieselmax in 2006.

The Hydromax is driven by two hydrogen-powered engines that JCB also uses in its commercial diggers. Combined, they produce 1,600bhp.

Lord Anthony Bamford, JCB chairman, said: “Twenty years ago we came to Bonneville with JCB Dieselmax and showed what British engineering could do with diesel power. Today we have done it again — this time with engines powered by hydrogen.

“This record was set by production-based engines, the same engines powering JCB diggers right now. That is the point of JCB Hydromax: it shows hydrogen works, and it works today at the highest level with zero emissions.”

Andy Green added: “Bonneville is the spiritual home of the world land speed record, and JCB Hydromax has just written itself into that history. The car was terrific — stable, strong and fast. Setting a world land speed record with hydrogen power, twenty years after Dieselmax, is a huge privilege. This record is a huge achievement by a world class team and superb technology.”

Emergency services were called to Park Road near to Constitution Street after the alarm was raised shortly before 6pm.

Police Scotland warned residents to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area.

Road closures are in place in Park Road, Roslin Street, Roslin Place and Constitution Street.

There have been no reports of any injuries.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Road closures are in place on Park Road, Roslin Street, Roslin Place and Constitution Street, Aberdeen due to a fire, reported at around 6pm on Monday, August 17.

“Residents are advised to keep windows and doors closed. Please avoid the area.”

Kevin Lamour, the FIFA chief operating officer who broke ranks and criticised president Gianni Infantino over his World Cup sell-off plan, has been sacked.

The French-Swiss executive had released an explosive statement declaring that staff had been ‘deceived’ by under-fire Infantino following his now-abandoned proposal, which would have seen stakes in the tournament sold to private investors.

He would now appear to have paid the price.

A FIFA spokesperson said: ‘FIFA can confirm that the working relationship between FIFA and Kevin Lamour as FIFA’s Chief Operating Officer has ended on 17 August 2026.

‘FIFA thanks Kevin for his two years of service and wishes him the best of luck for the future.

‘No further comment will be made on the matter.’

Staff were made aware of Lamour’s abrupt departure in an email sent by general secretary Mattias Grafstrom on Tuesday night. It has been claimed to Daily Mail Sport that Grafstrom – rather than Infantino – delivered the bullet to Lamour. FIFA have been contacted for comment on the claim.

In the wake of the sell-off plan being made public, Lamour told the Associated Press ‘It is the project of one person. Not only must this project not go ahead … but the time has now come for football political leaders to ask themselves the right questions and make the right decisions.’

Lamour also said that he was prepared to lose his job over speaking out publicly.

‘If that means I lose my job, then so be it,’ his statement to AP added. ‘I will understand and respect that decision. At least I’ll sleep well tonight.’

Lamour follows Infantino’s senior advisor Carlos Cordeiro out of the door. He resigned in July citing his opposition to the controversial plans.

She’s now set to appear alongside Richard Armitage in an upcoming ITV police procedural, Winter.

The actress plays DI Lauren Bell, “a meticulous and driven detective”, who joins forces with Richard’s character, Dr Ethan Winter, “one of the most gifted pathologists of his generation”.

The six-part thriller follows Winter cracking complex murder cases with his rule-defying methods, razor-sharp intellect and “extraordinary analytical mind”.

The synopsis goes on to tease: “Each episode features its own compelling, self-contained crime story, with resulting guest casting.

“A personal story thread, the unsolved murder of someone close to Winter, runs beneath the six-part series, as it still haunts his every move and he is intent on unofficially investigating the case and bringing the murderer to justice.”

A council has explained why there is a “mandatory” 15mph speed limit for cyclists was introduced on a track in Cambridge. The speed restriction was introduced on the maintenance track which runs alongside the guided busway and is used by cyclists and pedestrians.

Cambridgeshire County Council said it is an “important control measure to enable safe active travel for all users of the shared use pathway”. It is intended to reduce accidental conflict between users of the shared use track, the council said.

Motorcycles are also banned from the maintenance track and electric bikes that exceed 15mph are not permitted. These restrictions were implemented in partnership with the police.

In a statement, a Cambridgeshire County Council spokesperson said: “The Guided Busway is one of the most important transport routes in Cambridgeshire. It connects people to each other and to schools, jobs, and hospitals every single day. Keeping it safe is vital.

“The 15mph speed limit is mandatory for cyclists and other active travel users on all sections of the busway shared use path and is a permanent feature. The speed limit is an important control measure to enable safe active travel for all users of the shared use pathway.

“It also compliments the other Guided Busway Safety measures and is intended to reduce accidental conflict between users of the shared use track.”

The county council is monitoring the effectiveness of the speed limit and liaising with Cambridgeshire Police on enforcement action.

The spokesperson added: “We encourage members of the public to report any unsafe, anti-social and illegal behaviour on the busway to the county council or the police, as appropriate. Safety concerns can be reported via our web form or alternatively, you can scan the QR code on signs along the busway track to find the form when using the path.”

The county council was fined £6 million following the deaths of three people on a guided busway. In separate incidents that spanned across 11 years, health and safety breaches resulted in the deaths of Jennifer Taylor, 81, Kathleen Pitts, 52, and Steven Moir, 50.

“You don’t need to explain or make excuses again, I don’t think I’ll ever get that bit of it I don’t think I’ll ever get that bit of it but I know you and you’re a good person. You’ve always been a brilliant mate. You messed up big time. But I love you,” and Sarah replied: “I love you too, Grimshaw.”

Sarah’s cellmate, Kacey, who protected her in the attack, then came with the news that her son hadn’t come to visit her because he had been arrested. She started pressuring Sarah to get Kit to pull some strings to help her out. Later on, Sarah spoke to Todd on the phone, and he begged her to tell Kit about the attacks. She refused to do so, and he said to her: “If you don’t, I will.”

Fans were quick to react to the emotional scenes, with one writing on X, formerly known as Twitter: “I love their friendship so so much im so glad Todd has given her another chance.”

Another said: “Touching prison scene with Todd & Sarah today. They really are the love of each other’s lives. Even if they can’t be together as a couple, they’ll always be there for each other. Hope Todd steps in to help care for Harry. That would be a good relationship to build up.”

A third said, “Todd & Sarah…loved that scene” Todd made his first appearance on Coronation Street in 2001 and was introduced as the son of Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and the brother of Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas).

He and Sarah had a relationship as teenagers but it ended abruptly when Todd realised he was gay. During their time together, Sarah became pregnant with a son, whom they called Billy, but he was born three months prematurely and died the following day.
