Ludwig filming locations as cast talk ‘beautiful’ season two scenes

David Mitchell stars as puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor in the hit BBC detective series returning for season two

Ludwig has returned for its second series, and devotees of the popular detective programme are delighted.

Featuring comedian David Mitchell as master puzzle-setter John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor and Anna Maxwell Martin as his sister-in-law Lucy, the British mystery drama has been hailed as the “ultimate comfort food” in a crime format.

Series two will continue from where the first concluded, with Ludwig now serving as a Crime Scene Consultant, collaborating with DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola) on ‘impossible’ crimes for the Cambridge Police Authority.

While the second series boasts an impressive ensemble cast, featuring guest appearances from Stephen Merchant and Sian Clifford, Cambridge, where the programme is both set and shot, assumes a significant role, reports Cambridgeshire Live.

Discussing this, producer Georgie Fallon explained: “Cambridge, as a setting, is important to the show. We didn’t want to set it in London because so much is set in London, but Cambridge feels like a big enough, cosmopolitan enough city to justify the horrendous number of murders that they have there.”

“It’s also beautiful on camera and feels recognisable to viewers, but it hasn’t been seen loads. I think Cambridge has a nice mix of the beautiful old architecture, but also this really modern side with the science parks and all the research and that’s very interesting for us to set our world in.”

While lead actor David commented on Cambridge: “I went to university there, and I love it. You want people to enjoy slipping into this world like a pair of slippers, but with a dead body in them. Cambridge is obviously a great candidate for that.

“Inspector Morse is one of my favourite shows, but that was set in Oxford. That’s where people want to escape to in this kind of program. I think you’ve got to have a beautiful setting to juxtapose with the nature of the crimes.”

In a diary he maintained during Ludwig’s production, which he shared with Radio Times, the comedian also disclosed the challenges of shooting in Cambridge.

He noted: “Cambridge is an absolute nightmare to film in. It looks great, but you have to bring in a lot of vehicles full of lights and cameras and actors and make-up artists, and this city wasn’t built for traffic.

“So they set up a ‘unit base’ on the outskirts of Cambridge, and baffled drivers who don’t know the area try to negotiate their way through with the aid of Google Maps until they reach some bollards and a Cyclists Only sign and I say, ‘I can get out, I think I know the way from here.’”.

Executive producer Kenton Allen also discussed Cambridge’s significance. He remarked: “I think the setting is critical for any crime drama. When you think of Inspector Morse, you think of Oxford. When you think of Broadchurch, you think of the Dorset coast and the beach and cliff setting.

“I think Cambridge gives us another layer of specificity and a visual language. I think the more specific you can be about where you are, the stronger flavour your show can have.

“It’s a lot of period shows that feature Cambridge, but there’s not that much contemporary drama that’s been shot there. I think it feels fresh to a British audience.”

Series two of Ludwig will premiere on Thursday, August 20 at 9pm on BBC One. The first three episodes will drop on iPlayer at the same time.

Food influencer takes on 10 Teesside chicken parmos

Jj Da Lion, who has built a large online following by tackling extreme food challenges across the UK, travelled to Manjaros in Middlesbrough to take on ten 1kg chicken parmos.

Anyone who completes the challenge is rewarded with a £1,000 cash prize.

Previously, Ji Da Lion stunned staff and diners when he devoured six full parmos in a single sitting.

He managed to pocket £600 after completing the mammoth meal in less than 50 minutes.

The latest challenge, however, proved a different story.

Faced with 10 of Teesside’s most famous dish, even the seasoned competitive eater was unable to finish the feast.

Before taking on the task the influencer had already labelled it as “impossible”.

Videos of the attempt have attracted attention online, with 80k views already recorded on TikTok.

The foodie said: “We’ve been here before.

“Now they’ve got me to come and try…not even seven, or eight or nine, because that would be progress.

“This man has got me doing 10 – 10 whole chicken parmos.”

Many questioned whether anyone could realistically consume that amount, while others praised the influencer for even attempting it.

One individual described him as an “absolute warrior and animal”.

Another said: “Watching the last night was crazy. Well done. You did so good. I was feeling full watching it.”

“Good effort,” added another.

For a man who has made a name for himself by conquering oversized breakfasts, giant burgers and extreme food challenges across the country, this one was a challenge too far.

Stan Kasten reassures fans that Dodgers are not for sale

Stan Kasten reassures fans that Dodgers are not for sale

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers president Stan Kasten attempted to calm online speculation about the future of the franchise under billionaire owner Mark Walter on Friday.

“The Dodgers are not being sold. They’re not for sale. There’s no process that has been started to sell it, period,” he told reporters on the field before the team’s game against Pittsburgh. “We are planning only to win.”

The conjecture began earlier this month with Walter agreeing to a stunning sale of the Los Angeles Lakers to businessmen Josh Kushner and Bob Iger for a record-breaking price of $12.5 billion, according to a person familiar with the terms who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Walter bought a controlling stake in the franchise from the Buss family last year.

“I can’t tell you how important the Dodgers are to Mark,” Kasten said. “The Lakers thing? The Lakers were important to him too, but it’s kind of an extraordinary opportunity, which he took.”

Multiple media outlets last month reported that Walter’s business empire is under scrutiny from both federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission in tax fraud investigations. Walter is cooperating with the investigation.

“I know nothing involving the Dodgers is part of the investigation,” Kasten said, declining to go into specifics.

The 66-year-old Walter is based in Chicago, where he is CEO of Guggenheim Partners. He has overseen a run of success for the Dodgers that includes three World Series championships in six seasons and a penchant for lavishing big-money contracts on players like four-time MVP Shohei Ohtani.

“I think Mark has done an extraordinary job as an owner,” Kasten said, “and all he’s ever cared about is providing the best experience in order to make us more money, to make this project successful. I think so far it has been, I expect that to continue far into the future.”

Kasten also said Walter is not exploring any sales of his other sports properties, which include the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, the Professional Women’s Hockey League and TWG Motorsports.

Walter typically shuns the spotlight, preferring to stay behind the scenes and have Kasten or other team executives make public statements.

Hayden Panettiere’s lover ‘was called out as drug user at court appearance just THREE DAYS before her death’

Hayden Panettiere's on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson was called out over alleged drug use in court just three days before the actress's tragic passing at age 36, according to media reports; Panettiere and Hickerson seen in 2019

Hayden Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson was called out over alleged drug use in court just three days before the actress’s tragic passing at age 36, according to media reports.

The late actress was found unresponsive at an apartment in South Carolina on Sunday, August 16 and was later declared dead following a suspected overdose.

Hickerson’s brother, Zach, recently broke silence on Panettiere’s final moments, and revealed in a statement to TMZ that Hickerson administered Narcan to the star after they ‘realized she was unconscious.’

Only days before her death, a hearing took place on August 13 after Hickerson filed a request on July 20 to expunge domestic violence convictions from his record, per People

Hickerson claimed that he had fulfilled requirements of his probation, but prosecutors opposed the petition, noting continuous alleged drug use as well as two separate arrests that occurred in Los Angeles in 2025, the magazine reported.

Back in 2021, Hickerson pleaded no contest to two felony counts of injuring Panettiere. He was sentenced to 45 days in jail and four years’ probation, plus $500 in fines and mandatory domestic violence classes.

Panettiere’s on-and-off felon ex did not make an appearance at the hearing last week, nor did his attorney.

Hickerson had been arrested at a West Hollywood bar called Barney’s Beanery in August 2025.

However, he was not prosecuted due to insufficient evidence at the time.

He was arrested again later that same month and was charged with a misdemeanor count of being under the influence of a controlled substance, according to People.

Earlier this year in January, Hickerson ‘submitted proof’ that he completed 10 Narcotics Anonymous sessions. The misdemeanor charge was then dismissed.

During the hearing, prosecutors additionally cited a TMZ interview that Hickerson did back in May where he appeared ‘quite high’ and ‘very clearly not sober,’ per People.

Regarding the interview, the D.A. said that Hickerson ‘speaks for 15 minutes about the abuse that’s been documented in his victim’s best-selling book, and he makes several admissions about that,’ per TMZ.

‘And more significantly to his request today, he is quite high on what appears to be a stimulant, notwithstanding his lawyer’s representations that he is seeking expungement because he is now sober.’

A judge denied Hickerson’s petition at the hearing.

Hickerson had previously attempted to remove the convictions from his record one year earlier in July 2025, with the petition also being opposed by prosecutors, per People.

The Los Angeles County D.A.’s Office told People in a statement following the August 13 hearing Hickerson’s petition was opposed due to ‘continued demonstrable drug use’ as well as last year’s arrest.

Daily Mail reached out to a rep for comment. An attorney for Hickerson denied to comment.

Panettiere tragically passed away on August 16 at the age of 36.

Hickerson’s brother, Zach, recently broke his silence on the actress’s final moments in a statement to TMZ.

Hickerson administered Narcan to Panettiere after he and his brother, Zach, found her unconscious in their Airbnb in Greenville, South Carolina.

Zach, who said he wanted to ‘clarify my involvement’ in the situation, said he was calling 911 while Hickerson gave Panettiere the medication, which is typically administered to reverse an opioid overdose.

Zach said he, Hickerson and the actress were planning to get lunch and go indoor golfing after he attended church.

He called and texted Panettiere and his brother as he was leaving the Sunday service, but didn’t hear back from them, he recalled.

Zach assumed the pair were sleeping so he drove back to the rental, but he didn’t have the door code to the unit so he couldn’t get in.

‘I knocked loudly which apparently woke Brian up from a nap they were both taking on the pull out couch bed in the living room. When we went in and tried to wake Hayden up for lunch, we realized she was unconscious,’ he said.

‘At that point we watched as they tried every measure possible to save her life,’ he added.

Zach says he is ‘beyond heartbroken and devastated’ by Panettiere’s death.

He shared how over the past eight years the actress had become one of my ‘dearest and closest friends,’ adding that she was someone he loved and cared for deeply.

He urged for an end to the ‘assumptions, speculations and accusations’ that are swirling around the star’s death.

On Thursday, Hickerson addressed the star’s death through his lawyers.

‘Hayden’s death remains under investigation and it is important to allow that investigation to proceed,’ said his attorney Sloan Ellis, from the Ellis Hinton law firm.

‘As has been publicly reported, police confirmed there were no signs of foul play.

‘Out of respect for Hayden’s loved ones and the ongoing investigation, there will be no further comment at this time.’

Bank Holidays Originally Had A Bizarre Different Name

Bank Holidays Originally Had A Bizarre Different Name

This bank holiday weekend is looking pretty good, with Notting Hill Carnival set to take place in London and just-about-okay (by UK standards, anyway) weather predicted across much of the country.

Uncontroversially, I’m a huge fan of bank holidays. But I’ve always wondered why they’re called that.

I had a vague idea it had something to do with banks (which is true), but I wasn’t sure what it is about, say, a Monday in late August would necessitate a teller’s day off.

So, I looked into it recently ― and I’ve been laughing about what I found since.

What’s the history of bank holidays?

Sir John Lubbock, the 1st baron of Avery, who authored the Bank Holidays Act of 1871, is the reason why we have them in the first place.

Some say the politician, author, and banker (hence the name) set the dates according to when cricket was played in his local village ― he was said to have been a huge fan.

And per BBC Radio 4′s site, this bank holiday per weekend used to take place on the first, not the last, Monday of August.

That’s not the only change they shared, though.

“For a while some called the first bank holidays ‘St Lubbock’s Days’ after the banker Sir John Lubbock” who helped them to become law, BBC Radio 4 says.

“Funnily enough that didn’t stick,” they added.

We used to have a lot more of them

According to the Trade Union Congress, “Prior to 1834, the Bank of England observed about thirty-three saints’ days and religious festivals as holidays, but in 1834, this was drastically reduced to just four: Good Friday, 1st May, 1st November, and Christmas Day.”

The ’70s was the last time the Trade Union Congress (TUC) successfully campaigned for an extra bank holiday, the TUC says.

Nonetheless, they say about a third of UK workers clock in on at least one bank holiday a year (anyone in hospitality, food, transport, and more will know that other peoples’ time off is your peak crunch time).

I guess Lubbock isn’t a saint to everyone…

Nigel Farage branded ‘midwife’ of Holyrood pro-indy majority by Sir John Curtice

Published

on

Daily Record

The polling guru said Reform UK split the unionist vote at the election.

Nigel Farage is the “midwife” of Holyrood’s current pro-independence majority, polling expert Sir John Curtice has told an Edinburgh Book Festival audience.

The professor of politics at the University of Strathclyde spoke about the recent Scottish Parliament elections in conversation with political adviser Liz Lloyd on Friday evening.

Scotland was “not immune” from the rise of Mr Farage’s Reform UK party at the Holyrood elections in May, according to Sir John.

He said Mr Farage’s party split the unionist vote at the election, leading to both Labour’s Westminster win in 2024 and the pro-independence majority at Holyrood in May.

“Nigel Farage is basically the midwife of Keir Starmer’s majority,” Sir John said. “He is also the midwife of the very large pro-independence group that now sits in the Holyrood Parliament.”

Sir John and Ms Lloyd were joined by panel chairwoman Nicola McEwen and journalist David Torrance to discuss “Scottish Parliament elections: Where to from here?”.

Speaking in more depth about the election results in May, Sir John said a lot of what happened is “not unique to Scotland”.

“While the electorate in Scotland held the SNP to account, they also held the Labour Party to account,” he said.

“Scotland rejected Labour in the same way as Wales rejected Labour in the same way that England rejected Labour, which is why the Parliamentary Labour Party then rejected Keir Starmer once it was clear that Andy Burnham was capable of being his successor.”

Ms Lloyd, the former strategic adviser and chief of staff to former first minister Nicola Sturgeon, later said a lack of resources is holding opposition parties back in Scotland.

“What’s holding some of the opposition parties back from ever having an impact is they don’t have the means to think about, to research, or to come up with the ideas for what they want to do,” Ms Lloyd said.

“They’re broke and they’ve got no resources, so it’s very hard to engage with them seriously on policy because they can’t contribute in the same way that the (SNP) government can – they have a tendency to just revert to, ‘well, we’re opposition, so we’ll oppose’.”

Speaking later about sufficient talent in Holyrood, Ms Lloyd said Scottish opposition parties do not have the proper resources they need to function properly.

“I see talent, I see the resources, I see the ability to do it,” she said. “(But) I see an opposition that is actually where I think the problem lies.

“I don’t think they are equipped to properly fulfil both opposition and playing their part in sort of consensual cross-party politics that would help in the competency and in the better legislation.”

She added: “I don’t think they have the mechanics, the resources, the means to do it.”

Best hiking gear 2026, tried and tested on the trail

Feeling the chill? Make like an onion and layer up for the outdoors, starting with a good base layer next to your skin. Merino is a great option for hiking, but I also like bamboo, which is naturally soft, breathable and naturally antibacterial. This lovely top from BAM is made from a bamboo and cotton mix and is amazingly soft, easy to wear and flattering, too.

Djedy Sidibe died when the car he was travelling in collided with a lorry on Monday August 17. Four young people aged between 18 and 21 died in the collision, while a fifth occupant was seriously injured

A 19-year-old footballer is among four young people who were killed in a horror crash.

Djedy Sidibe, who played amateur football for Zaragoza Galaxy, died when the car he was travelling in collided with a lorry on Monday morning August 17. Four young people aged between 18 and 21 died in the collision, while a fifth occupant was seriously injured.

All five were travelling in the car, according to local media. The seriously injured passenger was flown by helicopter to hospital. A second car was also involved in the crash but nobody inside it was injured, while the lorry driver escaped unhurt.

The police are investigating the circumstances of the collision, which took place on the N-122 in Borja, Spain, as reported by NeedToKnow.

The five young people had been returning to Zaragoza after spending the weekend in Salduero, where they had gone to help at a YMCA summer camp.

After reaching adulthood, several had decided to become volunteers with the organisation’s Leadership Academy, helping younger people through the same programmes they had enjoyed during their own childhoods and teenage years.

Sidibe, who had Malian roots, was also studying for a Higher Degree in Chemistry and Environmental Health at IES Río Gállego. He played for Zaragoza Galaxy, an amateur team in the Major League Aragón.

His football club paid tribute to him on social media following news of his death.

“We at Zaragoza Galaxy are deeply saddened to announce the death of our player and friend, Djedy Sidibe, who passed away this Monday.

“Yesterday we received the tragic news of the road accident in which Djedy lost his life alongside three other people. The news has left us completely devastated and speechless.”

The club said Sidibe was much more than a footballer to those who knew him. They said: ” “For us, Djedy was not just a player. He was a friend and, above all, a great person. Someone to share moments, laughter and happy memories with; one of those people who, through their personality, could always make you smile.”

The club added: “Today, football takes a back seat. Today we say goodbye to a friend, a teammate and a person who will always have a place in our hearts.

“We would like to express our deepest condolences and all our love to his family, friends and loved ones, as well as to the families of the other victims of this tragic accident. Rest in peace, Djedy.”

Another of those killed was Saad Ahizoune, a young man of Moroccan origin who was studying for a teaching degree at the Faculty of Education at the University of Zaragoza.

The university also expressed its sorrow over the death of its student and offered its condolences. The tragedy has left relatives, friends, teammates and the organisations they were involved with in mourning.

The fifth young person who was travelling in the car remains in hospital in a serious condition.

Naomi Watts’ nepo baby Kai Schreiber, 17, mingles with Christie Brinkley, Katie Holmes and fashion elite at glitzy Hamptons event

Kai Schreiber, 17, stood out in the crowd at the Michael Kors 45th Anniversary Celebration dinner in East Hampton, New York on Thursday night

Kai Schreiber has made an impression as a rising young model in the fashion world, and she surely stood out in the crowd at this star-studded event on Thursday night.

The 17-year-old daughter of Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber was styled in a black dress-over-pants ensemble as she mingled with the likes of Katie Holmes, Carolyn Murphy and Christie Brinkley at designer Michael Kors 45th anniversary dinner in East Hampton, New York.

Kai, who walked the runway at Paris Fashion Week, carried a chic black purse and strutted around in black, block-heeled sandals.

Her hair was pulled back in an elegant knot with side-sweeping bangs while she posed up a storm with the well-dressed guests including her mom and the famed designer himself.

Watts, 57, oozed modern charm in a white blouse with asymmetrical neckline and tapering black pants with side pockets.

Holmes, 47, who was joined at the bash by her new artist boyfriend Jason Bard Yarmosky, 38, looked pretty in a softly flowing purple dress accessorized with red, square-toed heels and white purse.

Brinkley had her own nepo daughter Sailor Brinkley in tow.

Both blondes looked elegant in red with the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit icon resplendent in a coordinated top-and-pant set and her lookalike opting for a dress.

All turned out to celebrate Kors, 67, whose Fall/Winter 2026 collection is said to feature urban simplicity and luxury, highlighted by soft layering and colors ranging from city neutrals to vibrant hues.

Kai, meanwhile, has always longed for a career on the catwalk.

In a chat with Interview magazine last year, Kai said she believes this was partly a result of her struggles with her gender identity and desire to be a ‘beautiful, glamorous woman.’

‘I want to be a supermodel. Period. I’ve been practicing my walks in the kitchen for years. My mom can show you all the videos I forced her to film,’ the young fashionista told the publication.

‘Struggling with gender identity from a young age most likely had something to do with it. I always wanted to grow up and be a beautiful, glamorous, influential woman, like Marilyn [Monroe].’

Kai, who made her runway debut for Valentino in March 2025, has walked and modeled for other major fashion houses such as Mugler, Jason Wu, Fendi, Celine and Jean-Paul Gaultier.

She expressed her gratitude for the ‘strong community’ of trans people in the fashion world.

‘As a young trans girl, I’m always going to look up to the older generation of transgender people, especially in fashion,’ Kai continued.

‘People like Alex Consani, Hunter Schafer, Hari Nef, Dara, Richie Shazam, Colin Jones, and so many more.

‘It’s so great that there’s a strong community of us in the fashion world; it’s really a doll takeover. It’s important to all of us to have a sense of community, especially when we’re under such hostile attack.’

At the time, the teenager said she is unsure if she wants to go to college or focus on her fashion dreams.

Asked where she wants to study, Kai stated: ‘I don’t know. Like I said, school has never really been my strong suit.

‘I see myself in the fashion industry. It’s always been my dream. I’m not sure if college is for me, but we’ll see when it rolls around. I like to go with the flow.’

Kai’s father, Liev, 58, told Variety’s Marc Malkin last year how he shared a ‘profound moment’ with his child when she asked her family to use feminine pronouns.

‘To be honest with you, it didn’t feel like that big of a deal to me only because Kai had been so feminine for so long.’

Liev added of his daughter: ‘Kai is such a fighter. It’s important that she goes, “Hey, I am trans,” and, “Look at me.”‘

Kai’s parents were together for 11 years, though they never married. They began dating in the spring of 2005 after meeting at the Met Gala and raised two children together, Kai and Sasha, 19, before their eventual split in September 2016.

Watts wed Billy Crudup in June 2023, in a low-key ceremony at a Manhattan courthouse, while Liev exchanged vows with former pageant queen Taylor Neisen in July 2023 and welcomed their first child, Hazel Bee, a month later.

Sky Host Calls Out Conservative MP On Immigration Figures

A Sky News presenter has expertly demolished a senior Conservative MP’s attempts to downplay Labour’s success with the small boat crossings.

The French police claims to have prevented 185 small boats from reaching British shores in the last three months since Britain agreed to a new £660 million deal with its ally.

Channel crossings are also down around 40% compared to last year, although thousands of illegal migrants are still getting to the UK.

Sky’s Kamali Melbourne asked deputy Tory chair and the shadow minister for illegal immigration Matt Vickers live on air for his response to the news that small boat arrivals have still decreased.

But Vickers immediately rejected that interpretation of the stats, claiming the presenter was “gobbling up government garbage”.

“You always say that Matt. The numbers are going down. They’re 40% down,” Melbourne cut in.

The Tory MP insisted: “No they’re not! You’re picking the stats the government chooses to give you.

“The facts are: in the year to August 2025, 30,012 crossings were prevented by the French.

“In the year to August 2026, last month, 14,462 were stopped. That’s 52% down, that is an absolute disaster.”

Melbourne cut in: “You always do that, you did it to my colleague Anna recently and I won’t have you doing it to me now, I won’t have it.

“Listen. Home Office stats show that boat crossings are at their lowest since 2021. Are you going to dispute that statistic as well?”

Vickers tried to talk about crossing preventions, but Melbourne redirected the conversation onto crossings which actually made it over to UK shores.

The Tory MP then tried to talk about Keir Starmer’s record in office, but Melbourne cut in: “Matt. Are we going to do the stat I was just talking about? We’re at the lowest level now since 2021. Are you disputing that?”

“We’re nowhere near low enough,” Vickers said.

Melbourne pointed out the current level is lower than it was when the Conservatives were in office.

Vickers said: “It goes up, it goes down –”

Melbourne interrupted again: “You can’t just pick and choose which one you want to use, can you?”

The Tory deflected by saying: “Having record levels under the previous prime minister is not acceptable.”

It comes days after a YouGov poll for Sky found this week that 40% of Brits incorrectly think the number of small boats is going up compared to last year.
