Arsenal put Chelsea striker Joao Pedro on their longlist of possible transfer targets over the summer but decided against making an official move.

Mikel Arteta was open to signing a new striker after Viktor Gyokeres’ mixed first season at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were ready to sanction a huge bid for Julian Alvarez but the Atletico Madrid striker was reluctant to return to the Premier League and had his heart set on a move to Barcelona.

Arsenal of course had the chance to make a move for another striker and bosses at the north London club expressed interest in Chelsea’s Pedro.

The Brazil international enjoyed a promising first season at Stamford Bridge, scoring 20 goals in all competitions, and has netted two goals in four games so far this season.

Pedro was less influential in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday as the Gunners climbed back to the top of the table and ended the Blues’ perfect start to the new season.

A number of pundits still view Pedro as one of the best strikers in the Premier League and the 24-year-old has many ‘admirers’ at Chelsea’s London rivals Arsenal.

But Arsenal decided not to move for Pedro as there were ‘concerns’ over how the Brazilian would fit into Arteta’s system at Arsenal, according to BBC Sport.

Pedro, who was heavily linked with Barcelona earlier in the summer, views Arsenal defender Gabriel as the ‘toughest’ opponent he has come up against in the Premier League.

‘The toughest defender to play against this season? Top three: Willian Pacho and Jonathan Tah, but Gabriel Magalhaes was the toughest in my opinion,’ the attacker told TNT Sports Brasil back in May.

‘I was surprised by his speed, but I gave him a hard time, too! He’s been inspired this season.’

Meanwhile, Michael Owen believes Manchester United should have launched a move for Pedro years ago as he has always been a ‘huge fan’ of the Chelsea star.

Asked to name Arsenal’s biggest rival for the Premier League title this season, Owen told The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast: ‘Chelsea.

‘This could be way off the mark but they’ve got no Europe at all and you see how important that has been over the years. It was brilliant for Manchester United last year.

‘This manager [Xabi Alonso] did something similar with an unfancied team in Germany [Bayer Leverkusen], he’s going to change a lot, they’ve bought well.

‘I’m a huge Joao Pedro fan, I think he’s unbelievable. In fact, Manchester United should have bought him about four years ago when he was at Watford.

‘United had nobody up front for years and I thought, “That Joao Pedro”, I love him.’

It has brought to light a problem with the local authority, on potentially missing some stickers, as well as the company behind the codes undertaking a review.

The codes, which were called “flyposting” by residents, appeared on lampposts around the Blackburn Road and Moss Bank Way area of Bolton.

It is understood some of these QR codes have been removed by Bolton Council.

She claims Bolton Council acted upon the QR codes, but called for more measures to prevent similar incidents happening in the future.

She said: “Some of them have been removed, I believe. But I don’t know that there are new ones or whether they’ve always been there and they didn’t get that far up.

“But I was just a little bit sort of snapped up as they say, they have sort of upped the game and I’ve responded this morning to another officer.

Bolton Council usually clear what has been reported to them through residents or councillors, and so any unreported cases could be overlooked.

The QR codes were brought into light this week, after a 9-year-old scanned one leading to a website named happylabs.so.

In that report, happylabs.so told The Bolton News they were reviewing their promotional methods, and the codes weren’t meant for children to be using.

Cllr Fairclough said she was worried there could be more over the town, and still worried young people could access the site.

The QR codes are displayed on stickers featuring an image strikingly like a fast food-style fries carton, although the design has been altered and does not belong to the chain.

Cllr Fairclough said her main concern was that the stickers could attract the attention of children because of their placement and design.

She added: “I don’t know how many of these stickers there are, there could be thousands.

“This one in particular because I feel it’s enticing young people but also you know I get sick of seeing things tied to lampposts you know, I think it makes the place look completely tatty.

“I just don’t agree with it, if you allow it for one you have to allow it for all.

“I’ve no problem with charities or schools putting something up for 10 days to advertise something that’s going on, but I’ve no time for the others I’m afraid.”

Bolton Council has been contacted for more information.

Euxton, near Chorley, has been subject to a variety of pronunciations over the years, sparking confusion.

Many have pronounced the town’s name as ‘Yukston’ or ‘Youkston’, yet the correct way to say it is ‘Ex-ton’.

In previous years, the recording on Northern trains pronounced Euxton as Euston, like the London station.

The matter gained broader attention when it was revealed in 2023 that the station’s name was among those to be re-recorded by Northern for new on-board announcements.

This decision followed numerous complaints from passengers who highlighted the recurring mispronunciation.

While the village is small it is packed with history and notable buildings – aswell as some lovely pubs.

It is home to the Grade II* listed Euxton Parish Church, with some parts believed to date back to the 14th century.

Euxton has links with two influential Lancashire families, the Molyneuxs and the Andertons, who owned much of the surrounding land and shaped the village’s development for centuries.

Euxton Hall, originally built during the reign of Henry VIII and rebuilt in 1739, is another notable building.

This historic mansion of the Andertons of Euxton became Euxton Hall Independent Hospital in 1983.

Apart from its historical landmarks, Euxton also boasts a number of play areas and recreational sites such as Euxton Park and the Primrose Hill play area.

Euxton’s pub scene has seen a lot of change over the years.

Some have been demolished, others converted into private residences, and new ones like The Fieldfare and The Warhorse have been built.

The Travellers Rest, halfway down Dawbers Lane, is still operational today.

Euxton was one of the small communities that initially benefited from the advent of the railways, according to the Euxton Parish Council website.

The first section of the North Union Line northwards from Kenyon Junction on the Liverpool/Manchester Railway opened in 1838, marking the first station in Euxton.

The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) party is set for a historic regional election win in the eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt – in a blow for German chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Exit polls have placed the AfD party at 44.5 per cent, up ⁠from 20.8 per cent in 2021. Mr Merz’s CDU fell to 18.5 per cent from 37.1 per cent in 2021, a setback in a state the conservatives have governed since 2002.

If the full results, expected on Monday, show that the AfD has secured a majority, the party could form its first regional government in what would be a seismic moment in post-war German history. However, given that most ‌parties have ⁠ruled out joining ⁠an AfD-led coalition, it will depend on which other parties pass the 5 per cent threshold needed to gain seats in the regional parliament and whether the CDU could form a majority coalition to block the AfD.

The party’s victory in the election for the state government represents a historic shift in German politics after years of cooperation between the other parties to keep the hard right out of power.

The AfD seeks to restrict immigration, quit the Euro and restore ties with Russia as most of Europe rallies around Ukraine. Germany’s own intelligence service has designated the party as ‘extremist right wing’.

Ulrich Siegmund, lead candidate for the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, hailed the projections, saying: “We have made history in this country”.

He said that he was open to work with partners following the exit poll results, adding: “We extend a hand to all democratic forces that wish to pursue better policies”. But he also said that topics including migration and domestic security were non-negotiable.

This win is the biggest prize in the party’s 13-year history, at a time of widespread discontent with an unpopular national government that has yet to persuade voters it can get the country’s sluggish economy moving.

Victory for the AfD is also a symbolic blow to Mr Merz, whose centre-right party has led Saxony-Anhalt for 24 years.

A CDU politician has described his party’s performance as a “historic defeat” and called it a “black day”.

Sepp Muller, deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, told German broadcaster ZDF that there can now be “no business as usual”.

The AfD national co-leaders, Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, said this week that AfD “wants to implement the law of the land – for example with a view to illegal migration – and ensure that Germany remains worth living in”.

They decried other parties’ records and argued in a statement that an absolute majority for AfD is “almost the only chance to change course”.

Following the poll results on Sunday, Ms Weidel said that the AfD had a clear government mandate and would talk to all parties.

“No matter the outcome of tomorrow’s election, we have already made history,” said its candidate for governor, Ulrich Siegmund, at a final rally on Saturday evening.

“Because what we have started here in Saxony-Anhalt — that is currently sweeping across all of Germany — can no longer be stopped,” he told the crowd in the state capital, Magdeburg.

The AfD plans to push schools and cultural institutions towards more traditional values, curb immigration and overhaul public broadcasting.

Mr Siegmund arrived to cast his vote in his hometown of Tangermünde on a blue Simson moped, greeted by throngs of excited fans, and ruled out coalition talks with other ​parties.

An AfD-led state would launch a crackdown on migration with a task force set up to coordinate quicker deportations.

The children of refugees would be placed in separate classes at school to prevent what the party claims are “stresses” on the other children from being around different cultures.

Meanwhile, children with disabilities would no longer be taught in the same classroom as those without, instead being sent to special schools.

Schools would also be banned from flying rainbow flags, and the government would exhaust “all legal avenues” to limit Islamic expression.

Tyson Fury claims that his proposed grudge match with Anthony Joshua is off because his long-time boxing rival has “s*** his pants.”

The Gypsy King is now eyeing a third match with Oleksandr Usyk instead. Fury and Joshua have been on a collision course throughout their respective careers, with claims that the two are set to settle their differences in November.

However, it now appears as though AJ has had a change of heart, with Fury taking to social media to claim that his fellow Briton doesn’t want the smoke.

In the same breath, Fury then turned his attention to long-standing rival Usyk – despite losing both of his previous encounters against the unbeaten Ukrainian in consecutive bouts in 2024. He added: “So this would only lead me to a fight with Oleksandr Usyk.

“Oleksandr, you’re his trainer, and his sensei, and you know he’s a weak-minded piece of s***, and that he’d never fight the Gypsy King – which you’ve had the guts to do twice…twice. And you know how difficult it is in there.

“Listen, you got the decisions last time, fair play to you, good luck to you. But let’s do it again. Let’s run it back in November.

Joshua has not yet replied to Fury’s claims. It comes amid suggestions that boxing enthusiasts may have little appetite for a trilogy fight between Fury and Usyk, considering the commanding manner in which the Cat defeated Fury just two years ago.

The pair first clashed in Riyadh in May 2024, with Fury staking his WBC heavyweight title for an opportunity to claim Usyk’s collection of WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO belts. NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Giants took care of some contract business on Labor Day weekend ahead of the start of the season, signing backup quarterback James Winston and starting left guard Jon Runyan to two-year extensions.

Winston is receiving $13 million and Runyan $22 million as part of the moves, according to a person with knowledge of the move. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because the deals had not been announced.

The extensions provide salary cap flexibility and save space this season while keeping a pair of respected veterans under contract through 2028.

Winston, 32, was going into the second of a two-year, $8 million deal, initially signed before the Giants traded up to select Jaxson Dart in the first round of the 2025 draft. He appeared in two games last season after starting third on the depth chart behind Russell Wilson and Dart.

Now firmly No. 2 and serving in a mentor role, Winston gives new coach John Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy an experienced QB to step in when Dart is unavailable. He is also on Harbaugh’s leadership council, a group of players counted on to serve as a liaison between the staff and the rest of the team.

Winston is heading into his 12th NFL season since being the No. 1 overall pick by Tampa Bay in 2015 after winning the Heisman Trophy in 2013. The Giants are his fourth organization after stints with the Buccaneers, New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns.

Runyan, 29, has spent the past two seasons starting for New York after playing his first four as a pro with Green Bay. He is back along with left tackle Andrew Thomas, center John Michael Schmitz and right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor on an offensive line that has just one newcomer: rookie right guard Francis “Sisi” Mauigoa, the 10th pick in the draft.

Maya Jama has revealed what she is really looking for in a gentleman as she said they ‘must know how to treat a woman’. 

The Love Island presenter, 32, made her acting debut as Aisha in The Gentlemen season two which was released on Thursday. 

And during promo for the Netflix series the star was asked what the word gentleman means to her. 

Maya, who split from her boyfriend Ruben in May after 18 months of dating, mused: ‘What is a gentleman nowadays? 

‘I don’t know because I suppose the first thing that comes into your mind is like someone that opens the door and is polite and says pleases and thank yous.’

She continued: ‘But now, I suppose it’s just a decent, well-mannered man that has their stuff under control, but knows how to treat a woman and their family and everybody in their life. 

‘And wears a nice suit most of the time,’ she added.

To ease Maya’s nerves ahead of her first acting stint, Kaya, 34, slid into her DMs to share some words of wisdom.

‘I just said, “Hey, babe, heads up! This is going to not be what you expect. Be ready to be on your toes and trust the process,” she told Grazia.

‘I knew how intimidating it is stepping into a new part of your career and coming from a working class background. I just wanted her to know that I’m a girls’ girl.’

Kaya, who was raised by her Brazilian mother immersed in the culture, wanted to look out for her fellow working-class co-star because she feels they are both minorities.

Maya also prides herself on growing up with very little money or no industry connections having moved to London from Bristol at age 16. 

‘I absolutely still feel like I am a minority as a working-class actor,’ Kaya added. ‘I’ll be at a work dinner party and maybe one or two people will sound like me, but certainly not everyone else.’ 

Kaya pursued acting full-time just two years after getting cast in Skins at the age of 14, leaving her home at 16 with just ‘£36.50 in her bank account’.

Maya said The Gentlemen felt like a ‘safe entrance point’ into acting.

Having harboured a dream to act, she auditioned for the series last year – and got the part less than two weeks later.

The TV star then worked with a drama coach to be ready for the role, telling Variety magazine: ‘I never want to do something and be s*** at it.’
