‘Tyrone missed a chance to land the knockout blow on the Kingdom. I can’t see Dublin getting as close’

Throughout my senior career with Tyrone, I was fortunate enough to line out alongside many of the ‘history-makers’ who won our first Sam Maguire title in 2003.

Gavin Devlin wasn’t one of them. Our county careers never overlapped. He stepped away from the senior squad at the end of 2006 while I made my debut in 2007.

I would have spoken to Sean about him in the past and he recalled the qualities he brought to the team.

A lot of people actually probably couldn’t understand what value he actually brought to such a dynamic team and how he fitted it.

Back then, as he’d be the first to admit, he wasn’t great athletically.

However, I remember Sean talking about his football brain and his organisation on the pitch. He knew when to drop back, he knew when to stay up and he was loud and vocal on the pitch and really aggressive.

When you’re in management, you see the value of having someone talking to lads around them, especially a young team.

I see it at club level all the time. A young team with no real vocal leaders. Sometimes, it can be that missing piece.

It depends on the personalities within that group, obviously, but that can be of massive value.

He’s obviously always had that football brain, he’s always had that knowledge. Some people can’t translate that into management but when Mickey Harte brought him into the senior squad as coach in 2013, he had something there.

He knew how to set up teams, he knew the key messages to be sent out. It’s probably no surprise that he’s actually done what he’s done.

I remember him coming in and the one thing he brought with him that Mickey maybe didn’t have at that stage was an abundance of energy.

He had this way with him, especially in his first year or two, whereby he could really make you feel good about yourself.

That’s the bit I always remember. He was that sort of guy that could really develop a relationship with you. Mickey didn’t have that. He was more standoffish with players.

We had Fergal McCann too and he was a fantastic coach and a great fella, God rest him.

When ‘Horse’ came in, he just injected that wee bit of energy and passion.

You hear the Donegal players talking about Jim McGuinness in the same regard. If a coach and manager has that energy and passion, it is very easy to get on board with that.

Maybe things had become a bit flat with Tyrone at that time and we needed someone like that.

As I alluded to in a previous column, my favourite Ulster title win was over Donegal in 2016 . When I think back, ‘Horse’ was always very good at setting up against teams and we felt we finally had the measure of Donegal after losing to them so many times.

He had, even back then, an unwavering passion and drive. It gave you that kick and you’d be going into games fully confident. It didn’t matter who you were playing.

We were playing the best Dublin team ever in the All-Ireland final in 2018, but we fully believed we could turn them over.

His training off the pitch was probably the key for me. Our training, I’d say, had probably gone a bit stale. He brought a different intensity, he was doing different drills at a faster pace – everything was about pace and intensity every night.

Whenever you have somebody for a long period of time whether that’s coach or manager, it’s very hard to reinvent the wheel. A new voice and a new approach can really freshen things up as such.

It is great to see another Tyrone coach doing so well alongside him. Ronan O’Neill was always very vocal and very well-liked in the Tyrone set-up. He had a great personality with him as well.

When you are in that position as a manager or a coach, you have to have a wee bit of charisma and a bit of passion. You can see that in Ronan and it is no surprise to see him doing well.

As far as the All-Ireland semi-final goes, Louth have every chance against Mayo.

What I’ve seen of Mayo this season, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Louth turn them over.

I can enjoy the rest of the Championship as a neutral, but I think Tyrone missed a great opportunity to beat Kerry in the quarter-fina l. I was lucky enough to be in the Hogan Stand to watch the game and I can’t help but feel we’d have gotten over the line with another five minutes.

From a Tyrone perspective, it was one that got away.

Kerry looked out on their feet in the final 10 minutes. I remember seeing Joe O’Connor struggling to make a run back with six or seven minutes to go.

I felt, for the most part, Tyrone handled David Clifford well enough, but class always comes through and the man is pretty un-markable at times.

Kerry now had a bit of time to recover and recoup. It’s going to be a big ask of Dublin.

Tyrone were in a privileged position in that they were getting them at a time when Kerry were vulnerable.

That was the chance to land the knockout blow on the Kingdom. I can’t see Dublin getting as close.

“The least we now owe Dad is to honour his memory by establishing the answers he deserves.”

The devastated daughter of a Scots holidaymaker who collapsed and died while on a dream break in Cape Verde says her family “owe” it to him to uncover the truth behind his death. Laurie Brownlie, 67, fell ill while enjoying a two-week all-inclusive holiday with his wife Glenna at the five-star Meliá Llana Beach Resort and Spa.

Just three days after first complaining of feeling unwell, the retired IT engineer from West Calder, West Lothian, collapsed during dinner on June 8, 2024. Flight crew dining nearby desperately performed CPR for around 20 minutes, but despite their efforts Laurie could not be saved.

Now, two year later, his family have instructed specialist international injury lawyers at Irwin Mitchell after discovering the scale of reports involving British tourists who became seriously ill while holidaying in Cape Verde. The firm says Laurie’s loved ones are among around 600 new clients who have come forward in the last four months.

It now represents more than 2,500 people who have reported suffering serious illnesses, including salmonella, E. coli and shigella, following Tui holidays to Cape Verde since the summer of 2022. The cases include the families of 10 people who died following gastric illness.

A death certificate issued by the Cape Verde authorities states Laurie died from a suspected heart attack. However, his family say they have been left with “so many unanswered questions”.

They are seeking answers over whether hygiene standards at the resort may have contributed to his illness and death. They have also raised concerns over reports of flies in food and say there was no defibrillator available at the hotel when Laurie collapsed.

Speaking on behalf of the family, daughter Erin said: “It remains difficult not to think how Dad should have been coming home with mum at the end of their holiday. Instead, our family was left devastated and trying to come to terms with losing him so suddenly in such traumatic circumstances.

“I can’t imagine how harrowing it must have been for my mum seeing her soulmate pass away in front of her. We’ll forever be grateful to those in the hotel who tried to help Dad, but what happened has left us with so many unanswered questions.

“Nothing will ever take away the pain of knowing he died so far from home. As well as grieving for Dad, we had to deal with the shock of flying out to be with Mum, not being able to see him, and then facing the journey of bringing him back to Scotland. It’s something no family should ever have to go through.

“Dad was the head of our family and the person all of us looked up to for support and guidance. He was an amazing dad and nothing was ever too much trouble for him.

“Initially we thought what happened to Dad may be an isolated incident but we’re hearing too many stories of people suffering serious illness or even dying on holidays in Cape Verde. The least we now owe Dad is to honour his memory by establishing the answers he deserves.”

The family had travel insurance, meaning Laurie’s body was repatriated to Scotland after his death. However, according to Irwin Mitchell, the Cape Verde authorities embalmed Laurie’s body before it was returned to the UK, meaning no post-mortem examination could be carried out after he arrived home.

The family say they initially believed Laurie’s death may have been an isolated tragedy. It was only after seeing hundreds of other reports of serious illness linked to holidays in Cape Verde that they decided to ask lawyers to investigate.

Jatinder Paul, the specialist international serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell representing the family and thousands of other affected holidaymakers, said: “Our focus is now on securing our clients the answers they deserve, and where needed, either the support they require to come to terms with their loss or the specialist rehabilitation they require to try and overcome the impact of their illnesses the best they can.”

A spokesperson for TUI said: “As these matters now involve legal representatives, and any claim will be dealt with through the appropriate legal channels, it would not be appropriate for us to comment further on the specifics of either case.”

Football fans have descended on parts of Paris and London following Morocco’s loss to France at the World Cup. 

Thursday’s match saw the North African country get knocked out of the international tournament at Boston Stadium by France – whose team scored two goals. 

Almost immediately after the match ended at 11pm UK time, crowds flooded the streets of the British and French capitals. 

In London, scenes turned violent. In one video filmed on Edgware Road, west London, at least four people believed to be police officers were seen lying on the floor in apparent pain. 

Huge crowds of people looked on in horror as several police officers were seen attending to the apparently injured people. 

The man filming the video was heard saying: ‘They need to get the ambulance right now.’

Riot police were seen in multiple videos. In one clip, filmed outside Lebanese restaurant Al Balad, round the corner from Marble Arch station, dozens of cops with shields and helmets were seen marching up Edgware Road.

He panned to someone believed to be a police officer, saying: ‘Man down as well. Jesus.’

Further up the road, near Edgware Road’s intersection with Upper Berkeley Street, a massive crowd had gathered in front of a line of riot police. 

They were heard chanting the word ‘w*****’ over and over again at cops, who quickly charged them in an effort to get the crowd to disperse. 

Dozens of people were seen wearing red Morocco shirts. 

In another clip, taken at the same location, smoke was seen coming from what appeared to be flares.

A police van was seen parked in the intersection, as car drivers honked their horns in rage. 

The man filming the video was heard saying in response to the scenes of violence: ‘Oh my gosh.’

Scenes in Paris were more jubilant, but no less chaotic. In a video taken at Westfield Forum des Halles, round the corner from the Louvre, countless young people were seen jumping up and down in joy following France’s victory. 

They were heard chanting and blowing whistles loudly. 

In another clip, taken in Paris, a woman was seen on someone’s shoulders in the middle of a massive crowd gathered outside a pub. 

The crowd was heard singing in unison. 

Last week, huge crowds of Morocco football fans clashed with Dutch cops as they celebrated their World Cup victory over the Netherlands. 

Morocco won its Round of 32 match in Mexico by a hair, snatching victory from the Netherlands during a penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 with their rivals.

Following the match, Morocco fans tore through cities across the Netherlands, leading to several arrests.

While celebrations in The Hague initially started off peacefully, with people dancing and waving flags on streets, they quickly soured.

Several hundred supporters gathered at a crossroads in the district, kicking a ball in the air and celebrating wildly with passengers of passing vehicles, sometimes jumping on cars.

Around one hour into the festivities, the mood changed as riot police arrived on the scene.

Dutch police said officers were targeted with fireworks and stones, which prompted them to use a water cannon against them to disperse a large group of people gathered on Vaillantlaan, a main road in the city’s Schilderswijk district.

Police pinned several young men to the ground after striking them in their legs with batons. Handcuffed, they were driven away in police vans. 

Dutch police on bicycles played a cat-and-mouse game with youths through the streets but there was no major damage caused.

Despite multiple attempts, people declined to speak to the media, preferring to keep their identities secret. Many on the streets wore balaclavas or other face coverings.

Around 10 people were arrested in the city.

In Rotterdam, another four people were arrested for breach of peace and assault when Morocco fans gathered on the West-Kruiskade district early in the morning. 

Local media reported that a plant pot was thrown at officers, though the incident was not related to the arrests.

The Daily Mail has contacted the Metropolitan Police and the London Ambulance Service for comment.  

At least 12 people have died in a wildfire in Los Gallardos in the southeastern province of Almería, according to the Andalusian regional government, while six have been injured.

Some of the victims were found inside vehicles which had been engulfed by the flames. Witnesses say the fire was caused by a downed power line, with the blaze spreading quickly to a nearby wooded area. Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the fire.

A sustained heatwave with temperatures of around 40C (104F) has caused wildfires across southern Europe.

Hundreds of firefighters are battling major incidents in France, Portugal and Spain, with thousands forced to leave their homes.

“The number of people who died in the fire in Los Gallardos has risen to 12 after the confirmation of six more deaths,” the regional government of Andalusia said in a statement.

The head of the regional government, Juanma Moreno, called the deaths “a tragedy”. Writing on X after an initial toll of six deaths was announced, he said: “Our hearts are heavy and we are devastated by grief.”

About 150 firefighters were working to quell the fire in a hamlet called Bedar. Among those injured was a person who was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation, and another who suffered burns. Four people were treated at the scene for minor burns and respiratory problems caused by the heavy smoke.

The fire also led to road closures, while 1,000 residents were evacuated, according to emergency services.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said in May that Spain would deploy its largest-ever summer wildfire response this year, local media and AFP reported.

Spain’s Military Emergency Unit (UME), which is deployed in major emergencies, said it would join firefighting efforts in Los Gallardos.

In June, Spain reached its highest daily average since 1950, and had days where it recorded its highest ever temperatures for that month. Temperatures as high as 42C (107.6F) were forecast in some parts of the country.

Last year, a record 393,000 hectares (971,000 acres) burned in Spain, according to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), more than six times the Spanish average for between 2006 and 2024.

Climate change is driving up temperatures around the world, and Europe is the fastest warming continent, heating up twice as fast as the global average, according to the Copernicus climate service.

This is causing increased summer heatwaves, greater pressure on Europe’s water supply, and more intense wildfires.

Last year was the European Union’s worst wildfire season since records began in 2006, with more than a record one million hectares – equivalent to about half the land area of Wales – burning across the EU.

The worsening fire season in the Mediterranean has been linked directly to climate change in a separate study by the World Weather Attribution group at Imperial College London.

Experts warn that more frequent and severe fires across Europe are likely to continue in the future.

A 56-year-old man has been charged with incitement to hatred after a replica of a mosque was placed on top of a loyalist bonfire pyre in Moygashel, Co Tyrone

A man faces charges following the placement of a replica mosque atop a loyalist bonfire in Co Tyrone.

The model structure was spotted on the pyre in Moygashel on Thursday. Placards reading “Secure our borders” and “End the threat of radical Islam” were also affixed to the bonfire, which had been scheduled for ignition on Friday night.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland reported that the bonfire was actually set ablaze on Thursday night, complicating efforts to dismantle the hate-related display.

A force spokesperson explained: “Had the bonfire not been lit police would have secured the site and removed the offending material and seized it as evidence.

“The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s investigation into this hate motivated crime is ongoing.”

A 56-year-old man has been charged with incitement to hatred and will appear at court on Friday, 10 July.

Chief Superintendent Norman Haslett stated: “Hate crime has no place in our society and will not be tolerated.

“That is why tonight we commenced a proactive policing operation to take action and remove the hate display from Moygashel Bonfire. In advance of police arrival the bonfire was set alight a day in advance to prevent removal of the criminal material.

“Where there is evidence that offences have been committed, we will take robust action.

“As part of our ongoing investigation, a 56-year-old man has been charged with incitement to hatred. He is due to appear before Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on Friday 10 July. As is normal procedure, all charges are reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service.”

This particular bonfire has sparked outrage in past years. Last year saw widespread condemnation after effigies depicting migrants in a boat were set ablaze at the Moygashel fire.

Eleventh night bonfires are scheduled to be lit throughout Northern Ireland on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in advance of the Orange Order’s 12 July parades on Monday. While the majority of these bonfires proceed without incident, a number have become the centre of controversy with flags, effigies and election posters positioned on the pyres before they are set alight.

Taylor Swift‘s new sister-in-law Kylie Kelce has opened up about the pop superstar’s wedding to Travis Kelce, held at Madison Square Garden last Friday.

The 34-year-old Not Gonna Lie podcast host, who is married to Travis’ brother Jason Kelce, gushed that the extravagant ceremony was ‘incredible,’ per People.

She joined husband Jason, 38, at the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe on Thursday, where the former NFL star also gave his thoughts on the nuptials.

According to the New York Post, Jason said the wedding was both ‘a good time,’ and ‘great’. 

It was also reported that the former Philadelphia Eagles star was asked if he had more or less than 15 beers at the event, to which he replied that he had ‘way over’ that number.

It comes one day after the famous brothers released the season four finale episode of their New Heights podcast.

Travis reminisced on his elaborate proposal plan on the latest show, which came out on Wednesday, days after he and Swift tied the knot.

‘Ending this season with Tom Brady. Pretty epic. Starting it with Taylor. Pretty epic,’ he said at one point.

The Kansas City Chiefs tight end also reflected on the day he proposed to the Love Story singer, which he said occurred after her podcast taping. 

‘During that recording, the entire time I’m planning like, I’m gonna ask this woman to marry me after this,’ he recalled.

It’s unclear when exactly the podcast was filmed, but People reported that the episode took place before their July 3 wedding. 

As Travis kept Swift busy in August 2025, a team descended on his home garden to stage the setting for his proposal, according to Page Six.

He hired the crew to set up while they were filming, so that he could ask the songstress for her hand in marriage immediately after.

Swift and Travis announced their engagement news in a joint Instagram post shared in August 2025.

The caption of the iconic post, which has over 37 million likes, read: ‘Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.’

The bride and groom invited 1,000 guests to their over-the-top ceremony, which reportedly cost $50 million to execute.

Attendees were treated to a raffle, which resulted in some guests leaving with Cartier watches and Chanel handbags.   

On their wedding night, the bride and groom reportedly ordered more than 100 pizzas from one of New York City’s Mama’s TOO restaurants.

According to Us Weekly, the huge order included a spread of nearly every pizza offered by the eatery, which sells pies ranging from $29.50 to $50.

Per the outlet, owner Frank Tuttolomondo made it a point to personally deliver the tens of pies.

​​More than half of the coastguards in Yorkshire and Humberside would be forced to reduce their hours or stop volunteering altogether over plans to strip coastguard officers of their hourly pay, the GMB Union has said.

​​The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) plans to make coastguards volunteers rather than paid workers from later in the year.

​A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said: “The decision to move the Coastguard Rescue Service to a revised volunteer model follows a legal judgment, which meant we needed to change how the service operates.”

​Speaking to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS), they said: “We deeply value and recognise the significant service Coastguard Rescue Officers provide along our coastline and we will continue to work towards a model that supports our Coastguards and helps to keep the public safe.”

​The scheme to change the status of coastguards follows a court of appeal ruling, which confirmed that people who had been serving as coastguard rescue officers (CROs) have been doing so as workers, rather than volunteers.

​Subsequently, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) decided to stop the payments from September, in order to start legally classing CROs as volunteers.

​The MCA has said its current model did account for CROs having worker status and that it had a legal requirement to make changes.

​However, a cross-party group of coastal MPs and senior employment lawyers have cast doubt on that assertion.

​Joe Robertson, the Conservative MP for Isle of Wight East, said: “The government and MCA must stop peddling this line… It is simply not true.

“The court found that CROs are already workers, which is hardly surprising considering they get hourly pay and payslips.

​“The very fact the MCA is working through backdated tax liabilities and backdated pay is an admission that CROs have been workers for some time and the MCA has been in breach of certain obligations. It is the MCA which has now decided to change the CRO’s worker status since the court’s judgement.”

​Speaking to The Guardian, leading employment lawyer Nigel Mackay said the MCA would have been able to preserve coastguards’ worker status and flexibility.

​Alison Hume, the Labour MP for Scarborough and Whitby, said the plan “needs to be stopped, paused and re-evaluated”.

​She highlighted that CROs currently receive payments of just over £11 per hour for emergency call-outs and training commitments.

​“Stripping away their worker status risks sending entirely the wrong message to those who put themselves on the line to protect others,” the MP added.

​Almost 100 coastguards from Yorkshire and Humberside recently responded to a survey carried out by the MCA, the results of which were leaked to the GMB.

​The survey demonstrated that 52 per cent would be forced to reduce their hours or be unable to continue if the cuts went ahead.

​Responding to the leaked survey results, the MCA said that surveys conducted among CROs did not ask them to choose between models.

​It added that survey questions explored how differing models might affect availability, and the survey findings were considered alongside a range of operational, legal, and practical factors.
