Fans say they couldn’t put down the bestselling novel

If you’re looking for your next summertime obsession, fans of Carley Fortune’s bestselling novel This Summer Will Be Different may already have it lined up for you – and Netflix is about to bring it to screens.

A blurb for the novel teases: “Lucy is the tourist vacationing at a beach house on Prince Edward Island. Felix is the local who shows her a very good time. The only problem: Lucy doesn’t know he’s her best friend’s younger brother.

One Goodreads reviewer wrote: “This was even better than I thought it would be. It was one of those books I couldn’t put down but wanted to last forever. I’ve loved all of Carley Fortune’s books so far and I think this is her best one.”

Another admitted: “I DEVOURED THIS BOOK. I read it in 2 days and just simply could not put it down.”

A third reviewer summed it up simply: “This was the perfect, steamy romance book for summer. But one of the things that I loved the most, was the friendship between Bridget and Lucy. More than a romance, this was a story about finding your alternative family.”

Now, Netflix is transforming that much-loved story into a 10-part series. Fortune’s name may already ring a bell because she also penned Every Summer After, which Prime Video recently brought to screens.

An early synopsis reveals the upcoming drama “is a simmering, sun-soaked romance set across multiple summers. It follows a young woman navigating her 20s and her first real love – with her best friend’s brother, the one person she was never supposed to fall for”.

Lead character Lucy will be played by Heated Rivalry’s Sophie Nélisse, who portrayed Shane Hollander’s (Hudson Williams) girlfriend and best friend in the HBO series. Meanwhile, Stranger Things’ Francesca Reale has been cast as Lucy’s best friend, Bridget.

The central romantic figure, Felix, will be portrayed by Roby Attal from The Haunting of Bly Manor. Additional cast members of note include Jordan Rodrigues (Lady Bird), Jude Wilson (Fellow Travelers), Natalie Brown (The Strain), and James Tupper (Big Little Lies), reports the Mirror.

The family of one of two officers killed when a wrong-way vehicle on the A66 dual carriageway collided with their police car have described him as “our hero” who was “always on public duty”.

Pc Tom Clough, 38, lost his life alongside Pc Matthew Blades, 37, when a Volkswagen Passat — which had been in a police pursuit — struck the marked armed response vehicle in Teesside in the early hours of Saturday.

Five males, aged between 17 and 23, travelling in the Volkswagen also perished in the collision.

In a statement released through Cleveland Police, Pc Clough’s family said: “He was our hero with a fantastic of humour. Jumped into action whenever needed, and willing to help anyone for any reason.

“Proudly fought for his country to make the world a better place. Always on public duty throughout his short life.”

The fatal incident was referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which confirmed on Sunday that neither Pc Blades nor Pc Clough had been involved in the original pursuit, but had instead been deployed to the area to assist in locating the Passat.

Cleveland Police had received intelligence connecting the Passat to “numerous incidents“, according to the watchdog’s account of events.

The vehicle, believed to have been fitted with cloned number plates and carrying five occupants, was subsequently spotted after the plates triggered an ANPR camera, the IOPC added. An armed response unit initiated a chase lasting just shy of seven minutes before the Passat entered the A66 in South Bank, travelling against oncoming traffic.

Officers halted the pursuit and maintained their course on the proper side of the road.

Approximately 10 seconds following the cessation of the chase, the Passat collided with the vehicle occupied by Pc Blades and Pc Clough.

IOPC director of engagement Derrick Campbell expressed his sympathies to those impacted, stating: “We recognise the devastating impact the incident has had on those in the force, and the wider policing community, and offer our condolences.

“We have obtained initial accounts of officers involved in the pursuit, the incident log and in-car footage of the incident.

“Work is ongoing to obtain additional material.”

The investigation is ongoing

A police cordon was spotted having been put in place after reports of an assault in Cambridge. Police were called to Barnwell Road in Cambridge on Sunday (August 23).

This was due to a man having been allegedly assaulted. Cambridgeshire Constabulary has confirmed the injuries are consistent with grievous bodily harm (GBH) and the investigation remains ongoing.

A spokesperson for the force confirmed “there is no information to suggest that these individuals pose a risk to the wider public”. No arrests have been made so far and the cordon has since been removed.

A statement issued by a force spokesperson said: “The police cordon was in place due to reports of a male having been assaulted at the location. The injuries are consistent with GBH and the investigation is ongoing.

“No arrests have currently been made. There is no information to suggest that these individuals pose a risk to the wider public, but if there are any witnesses to the incident please call 101 and quote the incident number. The scene/cordon has been removed.”

Cambridgeshire Police has urged any witnesses to the incident to call 101 and quote reference CC-22082026-0464.

‘This creates a poor impression of Cardiff as the capital city of Wales’

A Cardiff sightseeing bus service has become the subject of controversy with one passenger describing the experience as a “rip off” following the replacement of its usual open-top double-decker bus with a single-decker. The Skycar service, operated by Cardiff Bus, is currently using a single-decker vehicle because of road works forcing the route to divert under a low bridge.

A spokesman for Cardiff Bus said thepreparations for a tram extension to Cardiff Bay have closed access to Bute Street, meaning the Skycar route has been diverted under Herbert Street bridge. They added that online information about the service, as well as information across other channels, has now been updated to reflect the situation.

However, one customer, who wished to remain anonymous, criticised Cardiff Bus for continuing to charge £8 for a ticket despite the change in service. The customer described it as “poor value for money” and said it creates “a poor impression of Cardiff as the capital city of Wales”.

They said: “Cardiff Bus has been advertising one of its city sightseeing open-top routes as a premium service and charging passengers significantly higher fares than those charged on ordinary bus services.

“However, for several weeks the advertised open-top vehicle has not been operating, and passengers have instead been transported on a standard single-deck bus while continuing to be charged the same premium price.

“What is particularly concerning is that Cardiff Bus appears unwilling to introduce a suitable diversion route or alternative operational arrangement that would allow the open-top bus to continue running.

“As a result, the advertised product is not being delivered, yet customers are still expected to pay the full premium fare.”

The customer further added: “Beyond the issue of value for money, this also creates a poor impression of Cardiff as the capital city of Wales. Visitors and tourists who choose the service specifically for the open-top sightseeing experience may feel misled when a standard bus arrives instead.

Other passengers have given a more mixed response to the change, with some saying while they would prefer the open-top bus, they still considering the service worthwhile.

Sarah Frost, 27, was visiting Cardiff from London when she took the Skycar on a Sunday morning. She paid £8 for her ticket and said she was “happy enough” with the tour despite the replacement vehicle.

“I would have preferred a double-decker bus,” she said. “I don’t mind that a normal bus has replaced it although the one thing I am sad to miss out on is the history, the voice that’s guiding me through the tour itself.

“I would be happier if that was on this tour, to make up for the fact that this wasn’t a double-decker bus. But other than that I am happy enough so far.”

Sarah said she particularly noticed the difference because of the warm weather. “I would have preferred a double-decker bus, especially today – as you can see I’m sweating a fair amount” she said.

“I definitely would prefer an open top, it’s more fun, it feels more like an experience – like you’re paying for something.”

Sarah said she had expected some form of commentary about the city’s history.

“I didn’t bring my headphones because I thought it would be a guided tour of some kind,” she said. “Now I am wishing I had because then I guess the nearest alternative would be me looking up the history myself to try and find out about the things we’re passing and coming across.”

She said information she had seen online had led her to believe the Skycar would be a similar alternative to the open-top sightseeing bus.

“When I was looking online for the information on the bus tour, there wasn’t anything that explicitly said that there’s no open-top bus tour without a guided tour,” she said. “I did assume that it was the same, just a different company but a pretty similar alternative.”

Another passenger, who did not wish to be named, said the open-top bus was particularly popular with their grandchildren. “It’s something a bit different, the grandchildren love it because they don’t see double-decker buses very often so yeah, it is a nice thing,” they said. “And I think people do look out for it, and tourists do. It’s just one of those things this time, they’re doing building work and that’s that.”

David Taylor, 68, also said his grandchildren were missing the open-top bus experience. “I pay for my children on there,” he said. “It’s nice to have a little ride on an open-top bus and see the Bay and see the museums – see the young children looking at the museums.”

In light of the reaction, a spokesman for Cardiff Bus said: “Our Skycar provides a “summer special” service between Cardiff City Centre and Cardiff Bay.

“There are restrictions to the route due to the preparation works for the introduction of the tram extension to Cardiff Bay closing access to Bute Street. As a result, the service is diverting via Lloyd George Avenue. In advance of this closure, we engaged in discussions with Cardiff Council as the highways authority to facilitate the diversion of the Skycar route under the Herbert Street bridge.

“Unfortunately, the works required to allow the Skycar to operate beneath the bridge have not yet been completed, despite receiving assurances that this would be completed before Bute Street was closed. Having given formal notification of the change to the authorities, we are obliged to operate this route, and adhere to the height restriction whilst it remains.

“Since this issue has arisen, we have engaged daily to seek an update and swift resolution. We are keen to return our open-top vehicle to service as soon as possible so that customers can continue to enjoy the full Skycar experience throughout the summer.

“We have updated information online [and] on our app, as well as across other channels, to make clear that a closed-top bus will be in use temporarily. Customers who have purchased a ticket but have not yet activated it can choose to use it later in the season when the open-top service returns, and for those who have let us know they are unable to do so we have tried to make amends.

“Whilst these circumstances are outside our control, we remain committed to restoring the open-top experience as soon as possible, and thank our customers for their patience and understanding.”

Footage shows how one of the men who died in a crash that also killed two police officers filmed himself driving recklessly just months ago.

A clip shared on TikTok this May appears to show 23-year-old Jacob Matusiak behind the wheel – with the caption: ‘Unfortunately I’m not a nonchalant boyfriend’.

Filmed by the driver, it shows a car barreling through a neighourhood before swerving onto a green in the middle of an estate.

In broad daylight, the vehicle appears to career down a footpath as the driver casually spins the wheel with one hand.

Mr Matusiak was among seven people who died in the early hours of Saturday when a car travelling the wrong way down the A66 near Middlesbrough crashed head-on into a vehicle carrying two police officers.

Photographs of the two officers killed by the five ‘TikTok joyriders’ were released on Sunday, alongside a tribute from one of their families.

PC Matthew Blades, 37, and his colleague Tom Clough, 38, have been hailed for their bravery after being killed in the line of duty.

The young men in the other car were today named as Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Theo Rae, 17, Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Jacob Matusiak, 23, and Makai Saddington, 18.

Both police officers and the five men in the VW Passat – which Cleveland Police believes was using cloned plates – were declared dead at the scene. 

Officers in another police vehicle had earlier been pursuing the ‘joyriders’ for seven minutes before aborting the chase, the force said on Sunday.

Just ten seconds later, the Passat crashed into PC Blades and PC Clough’s police car, which had not been involved in the pursuit.

They were in the area after the plates on the boys’ car activated an Automatic Number Plate Recognition camera.

PC Clough’s family paid tribute to the ‘proud’ officer on Sunday.

They said: ‘He was our hero with a fantastic of humour. Jumped into action whenever needed, and willing to help anyone for any reason. Proudly fought for his country to make the world a better place. Always on public duty throughout his short life.

‘We as a family and Tom’s partner would like to express our sincere gratitude for the overwhelming support and condolences from friends, colleagues and the wider community.’

PC Blades, meanwhile, can be seen in social media posts smiling at the camera as he attends Manchester United football matches and completes a half marathon.

The husband and father-of-two had recently become a coach for a local amateur football team and was preparing for his first turn teaching its under-sevens team – who his son plays for.

Seaton Carew said on social media: ‘He was looking forward to being part of the team and, most importantly, to coaching his own son, who is going to be playing for the Seahawks [under-sevens] this season.

‘Matty and his oldest son are much-loved members of our club and our U10 Lions football family.’

Cleveland police and crime commissioner Matt Storey described the force as a ‘really tight-knit family’ and said the incident would ‘have a big impact on them’.

Last night it emerged Saddington had posted a string of TikTok videos appearing to show him taking part in high-speed police chases months before his death.

It is understood he and his companions had close links to the traveller community.

In the early hours of Saturday, the group of young men became involved in a pursuit with two police cars chasing the ‘suspicious’ vehicle.

Ring doorbell footage at 3.36am shows the VW Passat being driven at speed through Middlesbrough’s streets. Officers called off the pursuit when the vehicle drove on to the A66.

Just three minutes after the pursuit was caught on camera, at 3.39am, the car ploughed into the path of a different marked armed-response vehicle, which was on the correct side of the A66.

Cleveland Police lowered flags to half-mast at their Middlesbrough HQ in tribute to their colleagues, who are understood to have not been part of the pursuit. Seaton Carew FC also made the same gesture today.

Michael Robert Cahill was praised by those who knew him as a ‘lovely, down to earth lad’

Chief Constable Victoria Fuller looked close to tears on Saturday as she told how she and her deputy David Felton had visited the families of PC Blades and PC Clough to offer condolences and support ‘with this unimaginable loss’.

Paying tribute to the men, she said: ‘These were brave officers, protecting our communities and serving our residents, who didn’t return home to their families at the end of their shift.’

She added: ‘This is an incredibly sad day for Cleveland. The loss has been felt across our communities, by our police family, and by our partner agencies.

‘My thoughts, and the thoughts of everybody here at Cleveland Police, are with their families, friends, colleagues, and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.’

Lauren Somerville, chairman of the Cleveland Police Federation, said: ‘Words cannot describe the pain the Cleveland Police family is feeling today.

‘Our colleagues who should have been going home to their loved ones at the end of their shifts are not. That is just unfathomable.’

Redcar MP Anna Turley, a government minister whose constituency covers the area, said of the officers: ‘They went to work to keep people safe, and they should have come home to their families.

‘Their loss will be felt deeply by their loved ones, fellow officers and right across the communities they served.’

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has opened an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham thanked the emergency services for their response in ‘incredibly difficult circumstances’.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: ‘My thoughts are with the families and friends of those officers killed in the line of duty as well as those serving in Cleveland Police, the wider police family and all the emergency services who attended the scene.’

As an investigation into the incident continues, social media posts from the young men involved reveal some insight into their activities before the tragedy happened.

In one clip, filmed in May by a passenger and set to rap music, 18-year-old Saddington is seen in an Audi being driven at speed through a housing estate with a police car’s blue lights flashing in pursuit.

The vehicle is then seen veering across a grassy playing field in an apparent bid to shake off officers.

Another video on an account associated with him shows a green Nissan being driven around before being set alight, while separate images posted elsewhere show him and a friend posing in cars wearing black balaclavas.

The clips reflect a trend of young men filming themselves being pursued by police at high speed and posting the clips on social media in pursuit of views and likes. 

It happened just days after five teenagers died in a head-on collision on a motorway in Ireland.

The masked youngsters were in a stolen BMW travelling the wrong way down the M9 in County Kildare at 2am last Sunday.

Police had tried to pull the stolen car over but it sped off the wrong way down the M9 to avoid a stinger device that had been deployed to stop the car.

The occupants of the other vehicle – three sisters and a seven-year-old boy – suffered serious injuries in the crash and remained in hospital. 

Following news of Saturday’s Middlesbrough crash, family and friends posted a series of tributes to the five teenagers. 

The mother of Saddington’s one-year-old son posted on social media: ‘What am I supposed to do without ur daft phone calls and u torching (sic) me life’s so cruel.’

Meanwhile, friends of Cole called his death ‘a massive devastation’ and another wrote: ‘Absolutely heartbroken, you are gonna be missed Cole, love u lots.’

He shared a friendship with Theo, who also died in the crash – with the pair pictured together last December and often commenting on each other’s social media posts.

One commenter wrote of Theo that he was ‘taken way too soon’ and had a ‘heart of gold’, describing as someone who would have ‘done anything for anyone’. 

Cahill was praised online as a ‘lovely, down to earth lad’.

The sister of Mr Matusiak said her heart was ‘broken’ by the news, describing her sibling as her ‘best friend always and forever’. 

A friend wrote he would be ‘missed by everyone who knows you’. 

As more details emerged, householders in Lime Road – a mile from the crash site – told how they were woken by the noise as the stolen car ‘shot down’ the street, followed by police cars.

Neil Hutchison, 47, said: ‘You could tell from the noise that they were travelling at high speed. 

‘Two cars went down the street and then a few seconds later there was a third, they were obviously going after another vehicle. It’s tragic that it ended with people dead.’

Craze that claimed five more young lives just a week ago

It was feared last night that the A66 crash may be a copycat tragedy – thanks to the deadly TikTok craze that claimed the lives of five teenagers in a head-on motorway smash in the Irish Republic last week.

In that case, the youngsters, who were all wearing balaclavas in a stolen BMW travelling the wrong way down the country’s M9, died at the scene in Co Kildare in the early hours of Sunday.

The deaths of Joey Carthy, 15, Jack Kennedy, 17, Alex McCarthy, 16, Jeremy O’Brien, 18, and 17-year-old Kamil Pustkowski led to public fury at social media platforms after it emerged that the teenagers were filming themselves in the car. 

That anger intensified on Thursday when TikTok declined an invitation to appear before an Irish parliamentary committee on media to discuss the latest craze of posting videos of people driving the wrong way down motorways.

Sisters Ella Hendricken, who is in her 20s, and Niamh and Alma Kinsella, in their 30s, as well as Alma’s seven-year-old son, Yemi, are being treated in hospital for serious injuries after their Hyundai was hit by the BMW.

The innocent victims, from Graiguecullen, Co Carlow, were on their way to Dublin to fly out for a family wedding in the UK when the teens smashed into their car. Three of the five teens killed in the M9 tragedy were buried on Friday. Two more funerals are due to take place today and on Tuesday.

Videos featuring youngsters in stolen cars trying to bait police into high-speed chases have become a macabre trend.

Mary Aiken, a professor of forensic cyber-psychology at the University of East London, told The Guardian: ‘While driving, they’re simultaneously filming and capturing content for posting later or live streaming. They have one foot in the real world and one foot in cyberspace. They’re thinking about the likes… about kudos.’

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — A mountainous heap of refuse collapsed at the largest landfill in Guinea ‘s capital Conakry early Sunday killing at least 22 people, according to a provisional toll by the country’s civil protection service.

Heavy rains, which started at around 3 a.m. washed over the refuse at Dar Es Salam, triggering a landslide that buried nearby shacks. A search and rescue operation was underway to find survivors.

The site had been designated for closure on Sunday, according to Lt. Col. Baldé Mamadou Bailo, the sanitation officer for the military engineering battalion.

Locals living around the landfill had been given eviction notices, which forced many to vacate the area, but many were still around at the time of the disaster, according to authorities.

“We will ensure that the remaining families are relocated elsewhere,” said Dienabou Touré, the minister of territorial administration and decentralization, at the scene.

I’m often guilty of moaning about the evening dining options on offer around Bangor.

While we have some lovely brunch spots and great pubs, I do often feel we lack some more fine dining options, places for a special meal out.

Well more fool me because right around the corner from my own home is a spot I’ve overlooked for years.

I won’t deem The Coq and Bull in the Clandeboye Lodge a ‘hidden gem’ (a ghastly overused term) as it’s well established and loved by many. It’s just a spot I’ve forgotten about and perhaps associate the place more with weddings and the fact it’s a hotel and where my school formal was.

In actual fact, it turned out to be the perfect spot for us to escape to for a well earned night out and it was a quick taxi home as opposed to heading into Belfast.

What we ordered

We were out for the night with the kids at the grandparents for a sleepover so we were going all out on our order.

I opted for the salt and pepper squid salad as it came with charred watermelon, avocado puree and summer leaves (£10.95). It can be a tricky dish to get right as there’s nothing worse than chewy squid.

My other half was torn between whipped feta and pear slices on sourdough and the crispy ham and mustard croquette. He decided to get our waitress to help him decide and after a discussion about his main course choice, he decided to try the croquette (£10.25).

For main course I tried the pan-seared Atlantic cod fillet, which came with crushed new potatoes, samphire and lemon butter sauce (£27.25). My partner went for the Blonde beer-battered Haddock with homemade tartare sauce, triple cooked chips and garden peas with clarified butter (£24.75).

As I said, we were out for the night so it would have been rude not to try a dessert, so we shared the chocolate trifle with chunks of brownie, milk chocolate cream, white chocolate mousse and dark chocolate sauce (£10.50). We did not regret a single course, delicious. Of course we had to sample some of the drinks on offer so we shared a bottle of the Marlborough Sun Sauvignon Blanc (£31) and a selection of cocktails, all priced at £13.50.

What we liked

The restaurant is spilt into two sections, the new Garden Room and the original Brasserie, each on opposite sides of the hotel lobby. This time we ate in the Brasserie and it was a gorgeous setting, very modern with a stunning floor to ceiling window out onto the grounds of the hotel. I snuck a peek over to the Garden Room and it looks like an equally lovely setting. The good thing is that when you book your table you can choose which section you would like.

The service was prompt, without ever feeling liike we were being rushed, and the staff were all attentive and friendly. One of our servers even helped us pick one of the starters. Good service goes a long way with me and being made to feel welcome is an important first impression. They also made sure we were never without water and regularly checked in to make sure everything was OK.

We ordered a bottle of wine and it came out inside a block of ice which was impressive presentation and also very practical for getting a perfectly chilled glass.

Now on to the food. I have already laid out for you what we ordered and I have to say it was all exquisite. My squid was tender and thankfully there was not a chewy piece in sight. The watermelon and avocado accompliments were delicious and refreshing. I would happily eat that over and over again. It was also the ideal portion for a starter. I also tried a bit of my partner’s ham croquette and was equally impressed as it wouldn’t normally be my kind of thing but it was a far cry from the typical standard croquette which usually comes to my mind.

My cod fillet melted in the mouth and again was a very impressive main dish. I initially thought I would regret not ordering a side with it when it arrived but they actually managed to pack quite a few potatoes under the fish. I loved it. The fish and chips also got the thumbs up and I stole a few of the chips which were exactly what you want from triple cooked chips, crispy enough on the outside but soft and fluffy inside.

We then shared the chocolate trifle which again was devine. I love chocolate and this hit the spot, it wasn’t too sweet but after a delicious meal it was the right decision to share.

Overall, the food was great and I’m just sorry we haven’t been before. It is definitely a place we would return to again and again for date night and I’m now also intrigued to try for a Sunday roast as well.

What we would change

It’s always hard to avoid the fact that eating out these days is expensive, so when you do spend the money, you want it to be worth it. Coq and Bull is definitely on the pricey side when it comes to how much each dish cost but when it came to overall quality and if I think it was worth the money, then yes it was.

Also I feel that this kind of price range is becoming more and more like the norm when you dine out.

I would say this is more of a special occasion date night then a regular anytime venue. We had a voucher to use this time which is one of the reason it came on my radar again and we decided to give it a go. I’m so glad we did, even if it did cost a little more.

How much it cost

In total, our bill came to £141.70, which we added a tip to, which for two people does sound excessive but again we had a few drinks as this was a special date night which bumped up the price. I feel it was worth every penny but I know this is above what others may be happy to pay.

We would definitely return to Coq and Bull and will be recommending to anyone I speak to. I will say it also makes for a great people watching spot as the hotel is also a popular wedding venue so we saw the bridal party coming and going and also the family of the pair getting married the next day.

Overall we had a wonderful night out, with great food and drink in lovely surroundings. What’s not to love.

Manchester United could see plans to extend the life of a car park at its training ground thwarted – thanks to concerns over the potential for a terror attack.

The Premier League giants want to extend the life of a temporary facility they brought in for contractors to use during the £50m refurbishment works at the Carrington complex by a further three years.

However, Inside Sport understands that counter terrorism cops have evaluated the proposal – and police have ‘implored’ the club to increase security measures should their plans get the green light.

United have lodged a planning application with the local council and, as part of the process, Greater Manchester Police are entitled to have their say. Given the ‘high profile nature’ of the site, they have liaised with colleagues in Counter Terrorism who have assessed the situation.

In a subsequent message to the council, they note the lack of a secure entry and exit point for visitors. In what is a strong response, police say they ‘implore the application to provide suitable secure pedestrian access’ which would ensure that every visitor to the site will be vetted. They have also warned of the prospect of ‘bad actors’ entering the site among a group of pedestrians.

And, in a move that will further increase headaches for Old Trafford bosses, the move has triggered a strong objection from locals. Action group Friends of Carrington Moss have set out their complaints over no fewer than four pages.

They say they are ‘particularly disappointed that United did not consider it necessary to consult with communities in advance of submission’ and claim that granting approval would increase car dependency in the area and is not an application for ‘sustainable development’.

The objection, which also brands United ‘shameful’ adds: ‘The applicant repeatedly states throughout its documentation that Manchester United is a world leading football club. It is clearly not world leading in sustainable operations.’ They also claim United removed two mature trees and ‘totally stripped’ other vegetation and say the car park was fully in use by March 2025 and not August, as had been suggested in planning application documentation.

Manchester United have been contacted for comment.

Jet-setting Gianni fights to hold onto power 

When it comes to saving your skin, it would appear that saving the planet takes a back seat.

Flight logs seen by Inside Sport show that embattled FIFA president Gianni Infantino, fighting for his highly lucrative job, is clocking up the air miles at a staggering rate of knots as he travels the world in an attempt to drum up support.

On Friday, his luxurious private jet – provided by FIFA sponsors Qatar Airways – left Doha for Rabat, where Infantino recently and infamously summoned officials for crisis talks. It then headed from Morocco to Punta Cana, in the Dominican Republic, where Infantino defied a request from one of his vice presidents to stay away from an Under 14 tournament in Punta Cana.

Victor Montagliani, the Canadian president of CONCACAF who many see as a potential successor, had asked the Swiss supremo not to visit amid concerns his presence would be a distraction from the event itself.

Under Infantino, FIFA provides the Caribbean Football Union with up to $5m from each four-year cycle and he may well have used the trip to remind officials of that point at a president’s meeting.

The following day, the same jet headed from Punta Cana to Paris. That is a total of around 11,800 miles at an estimated cost likely to run into the hundreds of thousands.

There was huge noise earlier this year around Gary Lineker and his The Rest Is Football podcast after it signed a staggering deal with Netflix worth a reported £14m to produce a daily show throughout the World Cup. That deal has been extended for the next two seasons, with a promise of focus on the Premier League and Champions League in twice-weekly episodes from August.

However, the top flight’s big kick off came and went without as much as a peep, let alone a preview, leading some to joke about the longest World Cup holiday in the industry. Indeed, one insider mused: ‘It’s been noticeable on social media that nobody seems to be questioning where they are or demanding a new episode. The Rest Is Football? More like The Rest is F*** All.’

Spurs fan Kay-Jelski turns to North Londoners

Much has been said and written about changes to Match of the Day under BBC director of sport Alex Kay-Jelski. It has also not gone unnoticed that three of the four new arrivals – Robbie Keane, Toby Alderweireld and Thomas Frank have either played for or managed Kay-Jelski’s beloved Spurs, with some joking that we may be witnessing the boss’s ‘Tottenhamification’ of the iconic Saturday-night show.

EFL clubs stand firm on VAR 

Do not expect to see VAR at EFL matches in the near future. Clubs have been spoken to about bringing the technology in for league games and have overwhelmingly decided to leave it to the play-off finals and Carabao Cup final (and all Premier League semis) with ‘significant opposition’ lodged. Football Video Support (FVS) has triggered a similar response, with an ‘overwhelming majority’ raising concerns over the FIFA-approved system which allows coaches a set number of ‘challenges’ to request a review of game-changing incidents.

Do expect an offer from Premier League clubs aimed at ending the deadlock over financial distribution to land across the EFL in the near future.

Police are appealing to locate a teenager who has not been seen since yesterday.

15-year-old Callum has been reported missing from his home in Lampeter. He was last seen yesterday evening (22 August) in Lampeter, though officers believe he has travelled to Aberystwyth today.

Callum is described as around 5’5 tall, of a slim build and wears glasses. He has dyed hair, with short sides described as ‘ruby red’ in colour. He was last seen wearing a grey Nike sweatshirt with a zip, black Adidas joggers and black trainers.

Callum also has links to the Cardigan and Carmarthen areas and is likely to be travelling by bus or on foot.
