One in six women may have this liver condition. What does it mean in pregnancy?

One in six women may have this liver condition. What does it mean in pregnancy?

A liver condition that many people have never heard of may affect around one in six women of childbearing age worldwide. A 2025 global analysis estimated that 15.8% of women aged 15 to 49 were living with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in 2021.

Imagine Lisa, 31, arriving for her first pregnancy appointment. Five years earlier, routine blood tests had shown mildly raised liver enzymes, markers that can indicate liver damage. Further tests found excess fat in her liver. Because she also has obesity and type 2 diabetes, and other possible causes have been ruled out, her findings fit the diagnostic criteria for MASLD.

MASLD is the new name for what was previously called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, or NAFLD. It describes excess fat in the liver alongside at least one metabolic risk factor, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity or abnormal levels of fats in the blood.

Now that Lisa is pregnant, she has a simple question: what does this diagnosis mean for her and her baby?

The evidence is still developing. Pregnancy-specific research and guidance on MASLD remain much less extensive than the evidence available for the condition in the wider adult population.

The issue is becoming increasingly relevant. Between 2010 and 2021, the estimated global prevalence of MASLD among women aged 15 to 49 increased by almost 14%, with prevalence rising with age within this group.

The timing is notable. In May 2026, the World Health Assembly adopted a resolution recognising steatotic liver disease, the wider group of liver conditions that includes MASLD, as a growing global health challenge. It calls for better prevention, diagnosis and integration of liver disease into strategies addressing long-term conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Pregnancy itself causes substantial changes in how the body handles glucose and fats, including a gradual reduction in sensitivity to insulin, the hormone that helps move glucose from the blood into cells.

Evidence suggests that women with MASLD have higher rates of several pregnancy complications. An in-depth review of 22 studies involving 13,641 women with NAFLD found higher odds of gestational diabetes, high blood pressure during pregnancy, pre-eclampsia and preterm birth, meaning birth before 37 weeks. Most of these studies used the older NAFLD terminology.

Interpreting these findings is complicated because MASLD often occurs alongside obesity and other metabolic conditions that can themselves influence pregnancy outcomes. Earlier studies were also often small or unable to examine the severity of liver disease separately.

Using nationwide Swedish healthcare data, we and our colleagues studied 240 births to 162 women with biopsy-confirmed MASLD and compared them with 1,140 matched births to women without known MASLD.

One finding stood out. Preterm birth occurred in 16.7% of pregnancies among women with MASLD, compared with 4.7% in the comparison group. After accounting for other measured factors, the odds indicated a 3.4 higher risk of preterm birth.

The association remained when women with MASLD were compared with women who were overweight or had obesity but no known MASLD, and when researchers compared pregnancies within families to reduce the influence of shared genetic and environmental factors. This strengthens the evidence that MASLD may play a role, but the study was observational and therefore cannot prove that MASLD caused the premature births.

Having more advanced MASLD, including fibrosis, which means scarring of the liver, did not appear to further increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in the Swedish study. However, the numbers of women with more severe disease were small and the statistical uncertainty was substantial.

Women with MASLD also had higher odds of caesarean delivery. But that difference was no longer clear when they were compared with women who were overweight or had obesity without known MASLD, suggesting that body weight or related factors could account for much of the association.

What about the children?

The evidence is more limited. In another Swedish nationwide study, 239 children born to mothers with biopsy-confirmed MASLD had a higher rate of serious infections requiring hospital care than 1,131 comparison children. Across follow-up, their adjusted rate was about 1.8 times higher, with the strongest association during the first year of life, when it was about three times higher. Again, this was an observational finding and does not establish that maternal MASLD caused the infections.

There is some reassuring evidence too. The same Swedish cohort has so far shown no clear evidence of increased cancer or death through early adulthood. Another study found no statistically clear increase in autoimmune diseases, conditions in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues.

These apparently reassuring findings also require caution. The studies contained only 239 children exposed to maternal MASLD and relatively few cases of cancer, death or autoimmune disease, so larger studies with longer follow-up are needed.

For women like Lisa, these uncertainties affect real conversations about pregnancy, monitoring and risk. As MASLD becomes increasingly common among women of childbearing age, doctors are likely to encounter it more often in pregnancy. Better evidence is needed to tell women what the diagnosis means for them and for their children.

Met Office issues heatwave verdict as Greater Manchester temperatures to hit 23C

Manchester Evening News

Warmer weather could be on the way for parts of the UK

The Met Office has issued a verdict on the chances of the UK seeing a heatwave during September as temperatures begin to soar.

Greater Manchester is forecast to see temperatures rising up to 23C on Monday (September 14), according to Met Office weather maps, with areas across southern England also expected to reach 24C.

As temperatures appear to be on the rise across parts of the UK, some reports are suggesting hot weather could continue throughout September, as the Daily Star reports ‘warmer than average’ temperatures potentially stretching up to October 11.

However the Met Office has warned the remainder of the month could bring a “fairly mixed picture across the UK”, adding that conditions could remain “changeable” for many.

Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson, said: “September is expected to continue to bring a fairly mixed picture across the UK, with a continuation of the changeable weather pattern we’ve seen recently. Weather systems moving in from the Atlantic are likely to continue to bring periods of rain and showers, combined with brighter and drier spells.

“The wettest and windiest conditions are expected to be focused across northern and western areas, while southern and eastern parts of the UK are more likely to experience longer dry periods and occasional warmer spells. Overall, temperatures are likely to be around average or slightly above average for the time of year.”

He continued: “Looking further ahead, there are some tentative signs that higher pressure could become more influential later in the month, potentially bringing settled conditions more widely for a time, but confidence in this remains relatively low at this stage.

“The strongest signal is for the current changeable pattern to continue, with areas of low pressure bringing further spells of rain, particularly in the north and west, while the south and east are more likely to see drier weather at times.”

While Greater Manchester is expected to see temperatures surpassing 20C on Monday, forecasters have suggested that they could once again drop over the remainder of the week. The Met Office warned the North West may feel “fresher than recent days” on Tuesday (September 15), with maximum temperatures reaching 18C.

Issuing a forecast for Wednesday to Friday this week across the North West, the Met Office said: “Changeable over the next few days and feeling fresher. Sunshine and showers will spread across the region, and it will turn increasingly windy.”

Oasis 2027 tour: How much would tickets cost this time?

Oasis 2027 tour: How much would tickets cost this time?

Oasis are expected to announce a new run of shows for 2027 today at 4pm… and fans will be hoping that the ticket sale is nothing like the debacle of 2025.

The Manchester rock band found their long-awaited reunion tour the subject of unwanted attention after fans were hit with inflated ticket prices for their UK and Ireland shows.

When tickets for Oasis Live ‘25 were released, many fans were shocked at having to pay more than double face value, as some standard standing tickets were sold for £355 instead of the expected £148.

Some fans forked out thousands of pounds to see brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher onstage together for the first time since 2009.

Ticketing company Ticketmaster was accused of using dynamic pricing, an algorithmic strategy where prices surge in response to higher demand – while low demand can also lead to lower prices.

While the UK’s competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority, did not find evidence that Ticketmaster used dynamic pricing, it concluded the company did not inform fans that standing tickets would be sold at two different prices, and that prices would go up as soon as the cheaper tickets sold out.

Following an investigation, Ticketmaster agreed in September last year that it would provide fans with considerably more information before and during their purchase of concert tickets.

Elsewhere, other fans were devastated after the company cancelled their tickets, having reportedly mistook them for bots.

Fans spoke of having their “dreams crushed” after receiving emails from the ticket-selling website informing them that their tickets to the rock band’s reunion shows were void.

Should the band confirm a new tour will take place next year, there is a strong chance that their team and Ticketmaster will have taken steps to avoid repeating the 2024 controversy.

Pop star Harry Styles recently added the final 25 dates to his Together, Together world tour, for which he is introducing “unpredictable fun” tickets where a limited number of £20 (or $20 / 20 euros) tickets will be made available.

This announcement landed after criticism from some of his fans over the ticket prices for the earlier dates, which in the UK ranged between £44.10 to £466.24 for seated tickets at Wembley, and standing prices between £144.65 to £279.45. VIP packages range from £468.85 to £725.45.

There is an ongoing debate surrounding what constitutes fair prices for fans in the current economy, amid a worrying trend in which a number of major artists have cancelled their tours – reportedly due to low ticket sales.

Oasis will certainly not face this issue – their 2025 tour was one of the most in-demand in recent memory, with tickets selling out within minutes of going on sale and generating millions in revenue.

Oasis Live ‘25 was estimated by Forbes to have generated over $400m (£293m) in revenue, with Noel and Liam each pocketing between $50m-$100m. As a result, the pair cracked the Sunday Times Rich List this year with a combined net worth of $375m.

The relatives of a teenager who vanished without her mobile phone following a music festival are making an urgent appeal to locate her. Sophie Potter, 19, from Merseyside was last spotted on Saturday, September 12.

She had been at the Reminisce Festival at Sherdley Park in St Helens, reports the Mirror. Sophie had attended the event with her parents but became separated at approximately 10pm, shortly before DJ Lee Butler was due to take to the stage.

She was last spotted outside the festival grounds at roughly 11.30pm. Sophie was last spotted dressed in a baby pink top and shorts along with her dad’s black tracksuit top.

Her parents grew concerned when she failed to come home. Her auntie, Samantha Potter, revealed the teenager’s mobile has been handed back to her family.

She explained: “Sophie got separated from her mum at about 10pm. It was so crowded – one minute she was there, next minute she was gone. Her mum left early – she thought, if she’s going out, I’ll catch her that way.

“Sophie is dead chatty. She was dead excited. She was going with her mum and dad. She’d been talking to a few people in there. We were thinking (she’d turn up at home) – she’s met up with some people or seen someone from school.

“We’d been worried all day yesterday. We rang hospitals in case she’d been there. This is very out of character. She lost her phone on the night as well – someone found it and we’ve got it back – but she hasn’t called her number either. We’re really worried as the time is going on.”

Samantha revealed the family received a fresh lead from a neighbour following yesterday’s online appeal, though Sophie’s whereabouts remain unknown.

She explained: “We’ve posted it and since then we had the neighbour contact us. We’ve just spoken to them and they saw her at 11.30pm outside. We’re hoping someone else will give us something to go on.

“We’ve contacted everyone we can think of. She’s got a brother and niece the same age. They’ve been everywhere looking for her. We’re up the wall at the moment.”

The missing person appeal has been circulated extensively online, with Lee Butler among those sharing it. Samantha urged anyone with information about Sophie’s location to get in touch with police immediately.

Merseyside Police described Sophie as approximately 5ft 3in tall, of slim build with dark hair. She has a henna tattoo on her left hand, a birthmark on her right shoulder and a belly button piercing.

Officers confirmed that when Sophie disappeared, she was dressed in a pink belly top, pink shorts and a black Montirex jacket.

How ‘housing first’ is helping people leave rough sleeping behind

How ‘housing first’ is helping people leave rough sleeping behind

A housing model that gives people a permanent home before asking them to tackle the other problems in their lives has achieved striking results. Now its principles are being built into England’s new approach to rough sleeping

When Michael became homeless in Plymouth in 2022, he struggled to find the support he needed, and made what he describes as an “impulsive” decision to come to London.

For his first week in the capital, he slept on the pavement without even a sleeping bag. Then he overheard people talking about The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields, the homelessness charity next to the National Gallery, and decided to show up.

Michael moved between the streets and temporary accommodation before eventually securing a place through the UK government’s Rough Sleeping Accommodation Programme. But it was time limited, and as the end of his tenancy approached the uncertainty returned.

Then he heard about Solo Homes, The Connection’s version of a homelessness approach known as Housing First. Michael was assigned a support worker, Gen, and within weeks he had visited a flat and signed a tenancy agreement. Rent is paid using his benefits, while the charity covers the cost of his care needs, including mental health support.

Gen helped him settle in and access mental health support, while Michael began making the place his own, even building some of his furniture. After years of uncertainty, he finally felt he had somewhere he could stay.

“Since then it’s just been amazing,” he says. He has not returned to the streets since.

Michael’s experience now sits within a much bigger change in how England is approaching rough sleeping. In August, the government announced a £442m rough sleeping programme, combining an immediate push to offer everyone sleeping rough a route off the streets before Christmas, with longer-term accommodation for people who have spent extended periods homeless.

More than 1,000 settled homes are expected to be provided over the next three years, alongside intensive support. The programme is broader than Housing First, but government guidance says its longer-term housing offer will build on Housing First principles.

Those principles reverse much of the conventional thinking about homelessness. Instead of expecting someone to progress through hostels and temporary accommodation, perhaps addressing addiction, poor mental health or other problems before they are considered ready for a permanent home, Housing First starts, as its name suggests, with housing.

People are offered a settled home of their own, while a support worker helps them access whatever services they need. Crucially, keeping that home is not conditional on accepting treatment or reaching particular milestones. Support can include mental healthcare, drug and alcohol treatment, benefits advice or help reconnecting with family and community.

The principle is that recovery becomes more achievable when someone is no longer worrying about where they are going to sleep.

Costanza Barbieri, a mental health practitioner, who has worked with people sleeping rough in London, says it reflects a broader shift in thinking about the relationship between someone’s surroundings and their wellbeing.

When stable housing is prioritised, we see reduced pressures on emergency services, A&E departments and the criminal justice system

“There’s a real shift in focus towards wellbeing these days, whereas in the past it wasn’t given much consideration – as if a person was capable of coping with their depression or stress by simply setting aside the environment in which they live, as if not having a home, sofa surfing, or living with a family of five in a studio flat could simply be brushed aside,” she says.

Evidence accumulated over several years suggests the approach can be particularly effective for people who have experienced long-term rough sleeping alongside mental health problems, substance dependency, trauma or contact with the criminal justice system.

Beginning in 2018, the government funded large Housing First pilots in Greater Manchester, Liverpool and the West Midlands, ultimately supporting more than 1,000 people.

Among the group followed by researchers for a year, 84% were living in long-term accommodation after six months, rising to 92% after 12 months. Before joining the programme, 86% had been living in precarious or unstable circumstances.

Researchers also recorded improvements in mental health and wellbeing. The proportion of participants describing themselves as often or always lonely fell from 35% to 16% during their first year, while GP registration rose from 60% to 92%. There were also reductions in reported antisocial behaviour and contact with the criminal justice system.

Stable housing did not instantly resolve every problem. After a year, researchers found no statistically significant reduction in overall drug use or alcohol dependency, while employment remained low. Several years into the programme, many participants were still receiving treatment for physical and mental health conditions.

That finding helps explain why Housing First is built around long-term support rather than the idea that handing someone a key will immediately undo years of trauma, ill health or addiction. Government researchers concluded that recovery could be slow and non-linear, particularly among people who had spent long periods on the streets.

In London, the homelessness charity Spear runs Housing First services across five boroughs. Elena Brooks, its assistant director of operations, and Carmen Jeffery, one of its Housing First team leaders, point to clients who have retained their homes for the full four years of a project despite previously spending long periods sleeping rough.

They also measure progress in less dramatic ways. Somebody attending a GP appointment, consistently turning up to addiction recovery meetings or simply starting to manage the routines of living independently can be a significant step.

Francesca Albanese, executive director of policy and social change at Crisis, another homelessness charity, says that stable housing can also reduce some of the repeated emergency interventions that accompany long-term homelessness.

“The results clearly show that when stable housing is prioritised, we see reduced pressures on emergency services, A&E departments and the criminal justice system. It’s also a far better way of spending money – directing it towards ending homelessness instead of managing it,” she says.

It’s a far better way of spending money – directing it towards ending homelessness instead of managing it

The need for a different approach remains considerable. Across England, an estimated 8,748 people slept rough at some point during June, with 3,253 classed as long-term rough sleepers.

London shows another part of the challenge. Between April and June, 3,959 people were recorded sleeping rough. Among those who had previously slept rough and moved into accommodation during the period, 80% entered temporary accommodation and only 20% moved into settled housing.

The Connection says that long-term rough sleeping has also been rising in the borough of Westminster. Its Solo Homes programme remains small, but the early results are striking. Since February 2025, the charity says it has supported eight long-term rough sleepers into their own tenancies through the scheme, and all eight have so far kept their homes.

Finding enough suitable homes remains one of the biggest obstacles to expanding programmes like it. Brooks and Jeffery say that housing shortages have already slowed Housing First schemes in London, while the government’s own evaluation identified housing availability, long-term funding and access to specialist mental health services among the main barriers.

The best thing about this is you’ve got someone to help you and you can feel stable

Responding to the government’s new programme, Cllr Anthony Okereke, London Councils’ executive member for housing and homelessness, welcomed the investment but added: “Alongside this welcome investment, we need a sustained focus on prevention and housing supply.”

The government has allocated £178m of the new programme specifically for settled accommodation, with councils able to acquire existing properties, bring empty homes back into use, convert buildings and, where possible, build new homes.

Housing First is not intended as the answer for everyone who becomes homeless. Some people may need short-term help after a sudden housing crisis, while others may prefer supported or shared accommodation. Its focus is on people whose homelessness has become entrenched and whose lives are often complicated by several overlapping problems.

For Michael, the change has been simpler to describe.

“After three years of uncertainty, it was just nice to know I don’t have to worry about it anymore. I’ve got stability now,” he says. “The best thing about this is you’ve got someone to help you and you can feel stable.”

After years spent wondering where he would sleep next, he has a front door, furniture he helped build himself and no deadline telling him when he has to leave.

Bride raises eyebrows over strict fragrance rule at wedding: ‘That is absurd’

A bride-to-be has sparked huge debate after asking guests to follow one strict rule at her wedding and ditch all fragrance

A bride-to-be has sparked huge debate after asking guests to follow one strict rule at her wedding and ditch all fragrance.

She explained that perfume is her ‘biggest migraine trigger’ and can cause symptoms so severe they mimic a stroke, so she warned guests ahead of the big day not to wear any scented products.

While many agreed that skipping perfume for one day was a reasonable request, things quickly escalated when others suggested guests should be sniffed on arrival, avoid scented laundry detergent, and even buy brand new clothes for the occasion.

One supporter went as far as suggesting anyone caught breaking the rule should be turned away.

The unusual debate has since resurfaced on Reddit, where users were left stunned by just how far some people were willing to go to create a completely fragrance-free celebration.

The original bride had shared her request on both her wedding invitations and website in the hope guests would take her condition seriously.

‘Fragrance is my biggest migraine trigger. [I] also get symptoms that mimic a stroke. Hope people take this seriously!’ she wrote.

A bride-to-be has sparked huge debate after asking guests to follow one strict rule at her wedding and ditch all fragrance

A card accompanying the wedding information explained that the request was being made for medical reasons and applied to both the wedding and a post-wedding brunch on the Monday morning.

‘The bride and members of the bridal party have severe fragrance allergies that will trigger significant health reactions,’ the notice read.

‘Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us create a safe & joyful celebration on our special day.’

While the initial request appeared reasonable to many, the conversation soon took a more extreme turn as people began suggesting additional precautions the couple could introduce.

One person enthusiastically backed the rule but argued the bride should make the consequences for ignoring it crystal clear.

‘This is awesome. Personally, I would also add: “Any guest found in violation of this policy will be denied entry to the events”,’ they wrote.

Another suggested perfume and body lotion were only part of the problem and that guests should also be warned about scented laundry products.

‘I love the idea, but I think you should consider adding laundry detergent to the list,’ they said.

They then suggested appointing a ‘trusted sniffer’ to enforce the rule, claiming they had previously heard of a wedding where a bridesmaid deliberately smelled guests as they arrived.

According to the commenter, anyone who failed the sniff test was directed somewhere they could wash off their perfume before joining the celebration.

The discussion became even more bizarre when one person admitted they would happily put up with body odour if the alternative was fragrance.

‘I’d rather smell cat urine and faeces!’ the bride replied.

‘At least that doesn’t give me horrible migraine attacks and stick to my hair and clothes! Disgusting.’

Others shared their own experiences of fragrance-free events and suggested the bride might need to introduce even more extensive rules if she wanted to completely eliminate scents.

One commenter claimed their cousin had issued a much longer list of instructions for her own wedding, including asking guests to schedule salon visits well in advance.

‘If you’re getting your hair done at a salon, or colouring your hair, make sure it is at least a week before the wedding,’ they recalled of one of the rules.

They said guests had also been warned about laundry products and advised not to use scented products for at least a week beforehand.

Even previously worn coats and jumpers could pose a problem if they still carried traces of fragrance, they claimed.

But perhaps the most extreme proposal was for guests to purchase completely new outfits specifically for the occasion.

‘Clothes that have been worn wearing fragrances in the past are still going to stink,’ one person wrote.

‘Make it a casual celebration and ask attendees to buy some cheap clothes to wear. Then donate the clothes afterwards.’

That suggestion proved a step too far for many Reddit users after screenshots of the conversation were shared, and while some sympathised with the bride’s sensitivity to fragrance, others couldn’t resist poking fun at the increasingly elaborate measures being proposed.

‘I like the idea of the wedding having a bouncer but it’s actually a 90 lb bridesmaid that will sniff each guest before allowing entry,’ one joked.

Another commenter said they were also sensitive to perfume, explaining that strong fragrances made them feel sick and gave them headaches too.

They recalled walking into a Dairy Queen with their seven-year-old when their child suddenly noticed the scent of the person ahead of them.

‘She immediately turned around and yelled across the crowded restaurant, “stay back daddy, this guy stinks!” as she pointed at the guy in front of her in line,’ they wrote.

‘I would rather skip the wedding than be subjected to anyone sniffing me or my body,’ one person declared.

‘I just saw the last one about suggesting fragrance-free casual clothes to change everyone into. THAT IS ABSURD,’ one wrote.

‘Honestly they should just provide hospital gowns,’ another joked.

‘Yes, cheap, disposable clothes: famously chemical-free,’ someone else sarcastically added.

Another was left wondering exactly how the proposed post-wedding clothing donation would work in practice.

‘Do they get naked and hand their clothes to the clothing donation bin to leave?’ they asked.

New research from LNER ranked destinations across each part of the UK based on factors like population density, air quality, dark-sky conditions, and access to blue and green spaces. Also considered were the availability of quiet activities such as visiting tea rooms, bookshops, and walking trails, with each place assigned an overall score out of 100.

Coming in at number one for Scotland on LNER’s roundup is Aviemore, which is a town and resort situated within the Cairngorms National Park in the Scottish Highlands. Aviemore ranks highest in Scotland with a score of 74.1 out of 100, recording the cleanest air and highest number of walking trails of all the Scottish destinations featured on the study.

Aviemore was also found to offer 10.82 hectares of blue space, 16.7 hectares of green space, and four nearby nature reserves. Among the best things to do in the area according to LNER are walk along the nearby Loch an Eilein, visit the beach at Loch Morlich, and enjoy a bite to eat at The Barn at Rothiemurchus.

LNER wrote: “Set in the heart of Cairngorms National Park, Aviemore gives you Highland scenery without leaving cafés and cosy pubs behind. The high street has plenty of life, but ancient forests, mountain views and quiet lochs are just minutes away. The three-mile path around Loch an Eilein runs through the old Caledonian pines of Rothiemurchus Forest, passing a ruined castle on an island in the water.

“A few miles north, Loch Morlich has a wide sandy beach backed by the Cairngorm mountains. Walk the shore, hire a paddleboard or simply sit on the sand and take in the view. Afterwards, stop by The Barn Café at Rothiemurchus for homemade scones beside a wood-burning stove.”

The second-best quietcation destination in Scotland according to the travel experts is Callander, which is a small town in the council area of Stirling. Callander took second place with a score of 62.4 out of 100, offering more than 20 hectares of green space and 6.31 hectares of blue space.

According to LNER, visitors to Callander can also enjoy 63 nearby walking trails and two nature designations that offer stunning views. Standout destinations include the magnificent Bracklinn Falls waterfalls and the Callander Crags, with the latter offering mesmerising vistas out towards Loch Venachar and Ben Ledi.

The final locations featured on LNER’s list of the best places in Scotland for a quietcation are the historic twin communities of Dunkeld and Birnam in Perth and Kinross. The two settlements received a joint score of 54.8 out of 100, and were praised for their dark skies, 5.59 hectares of blue space, and 40 scenic walking trails.

Commercial Director at LNER David Flesher commented: “We all need a break every now and then, whether that’s a weekend away from the emails, the traffic and the everyday noise, or just a change of scenery for a few days.

“That’s really what this research is about: a guide to some of the UK’s most peaceful towns and cities, plenty of which are easily reached by train. It shows that real peace and quiet isn’t hard to find. Dark skies above the Yorkshire Dales, ancient pine forests in the Cairngorms, sleepy coastal towns and market squares, the UK has some wonderful landscapes waiting to be discovered.”
