Traffic was brought to a standstill on Royston Road after demonstrators gathered following an alleged sexual assault in the area.

A busy Glasgow road was temporarily blocked by protesters on Friday evening following the arrest and court appearance of a man charged in connection with an alleged sexual assault in the area.

A crowd gathered outside Royston Library before marching to Royston Road, where demonstrators blocked traffic for around 30 minutes.

Police diverted vehicles while the road remained closed near the M8 on-slip before officers negotiated with protesters to move further along the road, allowing traffic to resume shortly after 7pm.

Videos and pictures shared on social media showed protesters in front of police vehicles while chanting slogans including “Enough is enough” outside a property.

Posts shared online by people attending the demonstration described it as a “peaceful protest” organised to express concerns about the safety of women and children in the area.

One social media post read: “The Royston community took to the streets to say enough is enough as they expressed their concerns about the safety of women and children.”

However, footage from the scene appeared to show a smashed window at a property in Royston Square.

The Glasgow Times reported that one unidentified person threw the brick before others attempted to access the front door of the property but were stopped by police.

The demonstration follows the arrest and charging of 40-year-old Mohamed Raouf Mezahdi in connection with an alleged sexual assault in the Royston area.

He appeared in private at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday, July 2, where he made no plea.

Lanarkshire house builder is one of TIME Magazine’s most sustainable companies

Daily Record

This is the third consecutive year that Barratt and David Wilson Homes West Scotland has been honoured.

A house builder with headquarters in Lanarkshire has been named as one of the World’s 500 Most Sustainable Companies for 2026 by TIME Magazine for a third consecutive year.

The recognition for Barratt and David Wilson Homes West Scotland, part of Barratt Redrow, which is responsible for local developments such as Lennox Gardens in Monklands and Jackton Hall, East Kilbride, underscores its industry-leading commitment to preserving and enhancing the natural environment and building great places that promote healthy and happy living for customers.

This accolade places Barratt Redrow amongst a select group of companies across the globe recognised for their leadership in sustainability.

Andy Curran, managing director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes West Scotland, said: “It’s fantastic to know our work across West Scotland contributes to a national legacy of building not only high-quality homes, but a more sustainable future. This achievement reflects the dedication of our teams to reducing our impact, innovating and creating communities that last.

“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. Being included on this global list is both an honour and a powerful motivation to keep pushing the boundaries of what responsible home-building can achieve.”

In total, 62 UK-based companies received the accreditation in 2026, all of whom are setting the benchmark on sustainability performance, transparency and innovation.

TIME and its research partner, Statista, used a transparent, multi-stage methodology to identify the world’s most sustainable companies. The process began with a pool of over 5000 of the world’s largest and most influential companies. Following a rigorous four-stage assessment, the final ranking excluded unsustainable industries and considered factors like external sustainability ratings and commitments, corporate reporting practices and environmental and social performance indicators. This comprehensive approach produced a ranking of 500 companies from over 30 countries.

Working with highly-skilled partners in the sector, Barratt Redrow is driving change across the organisation and its value chain to meet society’s most pressing challenges, including climate change, diversity and inclusion, and human rights. The business is committed to all homes being zero carbon in regulated energy use from 2030.

On site, the leading house builder is taking steps to reduce its operational footprint with a major focus on eliminating and reducing diesel use. This includes trials of hydrotreated vegetable oil as a lower-carbon fuel alternative, and trialling hydrogen telehandlers. Alongside this, it is improving site energy efficiency, expanding the use of renewable electricity and introducing tools to monitor emissions from construction activities.

Barratt Redrow’s determination to be a quality, sustainable builder was recognised in June by the NHBC’s Pride in the Job Quality Awards with 122 site managers given awards in 2026 – more than any other house builder for the 22nd year running. Also, the house builder was awarded five stars by customers for the 17th year in a row.

World Cup icon breaks down in tears and retires on the spot after England’s heroic win

Published

Daily Mirror

England’s memorable 3-2 win over Mexico inside the Azteca Stadium proved to be the curtain closer for one seasoned international after announcing his immediate retirement

Mexico icon Guillermo ‘Memo’ Ochoa has confirmed his retirement from football with immediate effect following their World Cup elimination at the hands of England. In one of the clashes of the tournament so far, Thomas Tuchel’s men pulled off a stunning 3-2 win inside the co-hosts’ home venue, despite being reduced to 10 men for most of the second half.

The Three Lions sparked emotional celebrations after the final whistle as they were serenaded by smatterings of white shirts in the crowd. At the other end, a poignant farewell took place.

Ochoa stayed true to his word, confirming that he would be stepping away from the game after a 23-year professional career. He was hoisted into the air by his team-mates after the game as he said goodbye to fans alongside his family.

Ochoa, who could be seen fighting back tears on the Mexico bench, told reporters: “My first game, Azteca. My last game, Azteca. It’s been a beautiful final chapter of my career. Thank you, everyone.”

The veteran goalkeeper, who turns 41 on July 13, announced prior to the tournament that he would be hanging up his boots following the conclusion of El Tri’s participation. It brings the curtain down on his illustrious career that saw him earn 153 Mexico caps, with 12 of them coming at World Cup finals.

Ochoa made over 425 appearances for Club America across two spells, etching his name in Mexican football history. In between that, he embarked on a tour of Europe that included stints with AC Ajaccio, Malaga, Granada, Standard Liege, Salernitana, AVS and finally AEL Limassol last season.

Ochoa lost his spot as Mexico’s first-choice choice goalkeeper at the tournament, having previously held the No.1 shirt since 2014. However, he remained in the squad – his sixth appearance at a World Cup finals dating back to 2006 – as he used his experience to help guide Javier Aguirre’s squad through the month-long event.

Aguirre handed him one final farewell at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico’s final group-stage fixture against Czechia, having already qualified as group winners. He came off the bench in the 77th minute to replace Raul Rangel as they ran out 3-0 winners.

But he was unable to stop Mexico from bowing out at the last-16 stage, with England producing a mighty performance inside the Azteca.

Fighting against thunderstorms and an altitude of over 7,000ft above sea level, Tuchel’s men took charge of the game when Jude Bellingham scored a quick-fire double in the first half, before Julian Quinones grabbed one back on 42 minutes.

Jarell Quansah received a straight red card to put England’s position under question, only for Harry Kane to score from the spot on the hour mark. Mexico were awarded a penalty of their own after Kane was adjudged to have kicked his opponent inside the box and Raul Jimenez stepped up to reduce the deficit.

Despite applying late pressure to Jordan Pickford’s goal, Mexico were unable to find a leveller as England ran out 3-2 winners on the night. They condemned their opponents to only their third defeat there in 90 games and first-ever in a World Cup game.

They will face Norway in an enticing quarter-final tie on Saturday after the Scandinavian nation stunned Brazil 2-1 thanks to an Erling Haaland double.

Russia-Ukraine war: At least 11 killed in second Russian strikes on Kyiv in a week

Published

on

At least 11 people have been killed in Kyiv following a second night of Russian strikes on the Ukrainian capital in a week, the city’s top military administrator has said.

Some 46 people have been injured, including five children, Timur Tkachenko added. Three more people were killed in the wider Kyiv region, emergency officials said.

Rescue efforts are continuing at more than 20 locations, Tkachenko posted on Telegram, adding that residential high-rise buildings were hit in two districts.

The strikes come on the eve of the Nato summit in Turkey, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to hold talks with President Trump.

Hours before the latest strikes, Zelensky had warned that Moscow was preparing a second “massive strike” on Kyiv following its attacks on Thursday that killed 30 people.

It was another frightening night for people in the capital, with loud explosions and the boom of Ukraine’s air defences in action. Once again, many residents sought shelter underground.

Russian ballistic missiles hit several buildings across the city, Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said, adding that fires had broken out in some apartment complexes.

Warehouses and a garage workshop were also damaged, according to the mayor.

Widespread destruction was visible on Monday morning. Three large blocks of flats in the city have partially collapsed, some were hit directly by missiles.

Rescuers have been trying to reach people trapped inside the ruins.

Helicopters have been shuttling back and forth in the sky, carrying water from the river to douse fires in the city.

Hours ahead of the strikes Zelensky said that intelligence had indicated that Kyiv would come under a second wave of Russian attacks in a week.

After a barrage of drone and missile strikes on Thursday night, tens of thousands of residents evacuated to metro stations around the city as alarms blared in the early hours of Friday morning.

Ukraine accused Moscow of deliberately attacking civilian areas in that attack, which left at least 30 people dead. Russia said it had targeted military and energy bases in retaliation for recent Ukrainian strikes on power stations and energy facilities in Russian territory.

Such attacks continued overnight, with power being cut off temporarily in the city of Sevastopol in Russian-occupied Crimea.

Ukraine has been escalating its strikes on targets in the peninsula in an attempt to pressure the Kremlin into peace talks.

So far, it has opted to increase its deadly attacks on Kyiv instead.

Ahead of the Nato meeting, Zelensky urged allies to not delay on sending air defence missiles to counter Russian ballistics.

He wrote on X: “Any delay with missiles for our air defense… means the loss of lives, and it encourages Russia to continue the war.”

Zelensky has also appealed to the US to grant Ukraine licences to manufacture Patriot defence missiles.

Nigel Farage says ‘no wrongdoing’ after benefits from ally not declared

Published

on

Nigel Farage in a close-up, wearing a blue suit, white shirt and stripe tie.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, Babarinde said: “He has dined out on a career about taking back control, yet he won’t tell us, he won’t be straight with us about who controls him.”

Under parliamentary rules, new MPs must declare financial interests and “registrable benefits” received in the 12 months before their election.

The guidelines say purely personal gifts or benefits do not need to be registered.

Farage is already facing a parliamentary probe over a £5m gift from a billionaire Reform UK donor which was not registered.

He has argued that he did not need to declare the gift because he received it before he was elected as Clacton MP and it was not political.

His team has made a similar argument for why the “in kind” – non-cash – benefits allegedly from Cottrell were not registered.

Cottrell, 32, who admitted a count of wire fraud in the US in 2017, is a long-standing ally of Farage. He was involved with Farage’s former political party Ukip as a volunteer in the run-up to the Brexit referendum.

According to the Sunday Times, Cottrell is a cryptocurrency entrepreneur and is involved with the offshore gambling website Tether.bet.

Farage said: “I have done no wrongdoing, followed the rules and I am now considering legal action against the Sunday Times.

“It’s now clear the establishment will stop at nothing to hurt Reform – we want to smash their cosy consensus.”

When he became an MP, Farage registered a £9,253 trip to Belgium in April 2024 donated by Cottrell, and later added a £15,276 donation from Cottrell for a US domestic flight he provided in December 2024.

No other support from Cottrell is listed in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests.

South Korea FA chief quits amid World Cup backlash in Asia

South Korea FA chief quits amid World Cup backlash in Asia

The fallout in Asian football continues as the continent comes to terms with an underwhelming World Cup performance.

On Monday, Chung Mong-gyu stepped down as president of the Korea Football Association.

His departure follows harsh criticism from the country’s president and the resignation of coach Hong Myung-bo last week after South Korea’s group-stage exit that culminated in a 1-0 loss to South Africa.

“There were moments when I lived up to expectations and moments when I left you deeply disappointed,” said Chung, who has held the role since 2013. “All the success is thanks to our players and fans, and all the mistakes are my responsibility.

“I am convinced that Korean football will overcome adversity and reach great heights once again, as it always has.”

South Korea’s soccer superstar Son Heung-min apologized for the team’s performance in a long social media post where he said he was “indescribably hurt” and eager to “win the hearts” of the nation once again.

The day after Hong stood down as South Korea’s coach, Yasser Al-Misehal quit as Saudi Arabia Football Federation president as the team fell at the first hurdle at its seventh appearance.

“The national team’s failure to qualify for the next round of the World Cup is a result that falls short of all our ambitions,” Al-Misehal wrote on social media. “I bear full responsibility for it, apologizing to everyone who hoped to see our team in a better position.”

Not enough wins

Teams from within the Asian Football Confederation managed just three wins in 29 matches at the expanded 48-team World Cup. Of the nine representatives, only Australia and Japan advanced from the group stage. Iran was unbeaten but three draws were not quite enough to take the team into the knockout stage.

Australia and Japan were eliminated in the round of 32, the very first stage of knockouts.

The Socceroos, the AFC’s last hope, lost in a penalty shootout to Egypt. Australia head coach Tony Popovic’s job was already safe after he signed a contract extension on the eve of his team’s opening win over Turkey.

Japan was the best performer with a 4-0 win over Tunisia 4-0 and draws with the Netherlands and Sweden to place second in its group. Then after leading Brazil 1-0 at halftime, the Samurai Blue lost to a 96th minute goal from the five-time champion.

“Through the three group-stage matches and the hard-fought game against Brazil, I sensed that what we have built can compete on the world stage,” coach Hajime Moriyasu said. “If we continue this growth steadily, a day will come when we can be the best in the world.”

Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation, warned that there’s a lot of work to do for the rest to catch up.

“While we celebrate our two qualified teams, we must also look realistically at the overall outcomes,” Salman said of the knockout stages of the tournament. “Our teams are making strides and displaying great fighting spirit, the gap at the absolute top tier remains tight, and we must continue to work hard to bridge it.”

South Korea’s run to the semifinals in 2002 remains the continent’s benchmark at the men’s World Cup. Japan has lost four times in the knockout stages and Australia is 0-3 in World Cup knockout games.

Jordan lost all three games on its World Cup debut and parted ways with coach Jamal Sellami on Sunday. Sellami took the job in 2024 and helped Jordan secure its first World Cup qualification in June 2025.

There is still speculation about the future of the Qatar and Iraq coaches after both teams finished bottom of their respective groups.

Uzbekistan also failed to collect a single point in its first appearance at the global tournament but coach Fabio Cannavaro is set to stay.

Uzbekistan’s last loss was to Congo, one of nine African nations to advance from the group stage.

“All my players realized just how difficult it is to play at this level,” Cannavaro, who was captain of the World Cup-winning Italy team in 2006 title, said. “We gained valuable experience — not just the players, but myself, our staff and the federation as well.

“I hope this experience will give us more motivation for the future.”

Kate Middleton ‘had to explain’ basic parenting task to Prince William

Published

on

Cambridgeshire Live

Royal staff members have shared behind-the-scenes insights into the lives of Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, including the common parenting practice the prince had never experienced

Kate Middleton, is said to have had to teach a relatively commonplace parenting activity to her husband, Prince William.

Intimate details of the royal couple’s private life and personal dynamic have been revealed by former royal staff members in a new book, Yes Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants, written by author Tom Quinn.

Prince William and his younger brother Harry grew up under constant public scrutiny, accompanying their parents King Charles and Princess Diana on numerous tours throughout their early childhood.

Every aspect of their lives – from their formative years and adolescence to their time at university and beyond – has been subject to relentless examination by both the public and the media.

Despite being born into considerable privilege, the pressures and expectations of royal life, coupled with the burden of living under the spotlight, brought with them significant drawbacks.

According to a former Kensington Palace maid, Kate reportedly had to teach Prince William how to give his children a piggyback because he’d never received one as a child.

The maid reportedly told author Quinn: “Kate had to explain many of the things that parents outside the royal family do with their children as a matter of course.

“She had to show him how to give the children a piggyback, for example. William said very quietly, ‘My father never gave me a piggyback.’”

Further revelations about life behind palace walls have also come to light. In an excerpt published in the Times, one former staff member told Quinn: “[King Charles and William] both get irritated very quickly. They are very picky. It comes naturally to them.”

In such circumstances, Kate frequently serves as the voice encouraging “calm”.

The insider added: “I don’t know where William would be without Kate – she hasn’t had everything done for her throughout her life, so she calms him down when he gets a bit fractious.

“She said he sometimes has to be treated as her fourth child.”

Kate received praise from other sources regarding how she navigated the complexities of palace life, as well as the “snooty” attitudes she initially encountered from certain staff members.

A former Kensington Palace employee told Quinn: “Kate is someone who slowly and carefully absorbs the atmosphere of a place, the relationship between people and the rules.

“She doesn’t jump in straight away and try to change everything to suit her way of thinking. She bides her time and is very intelligent and intuitive about other people, what they do and how they behave.”

They added: “She was also coached – not just by William, who wanted Kate to avoid the problems his mother had encountered, but also by the staff.

“Kate was always happy to accept advice both from the lower staff, with whom she got on very well, and from the courtiers, even though some of them were initially very snooty about her.”

Kate married Prince William on April 29, 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London, following a relationship that began in 2003.

Following their marriage, the Princess of Wales assumed the title Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge, while William received the titles Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn, and Baron Carrickfergus.

On September 9 2022, Kate became Princess of Wales when William was created Prince of Wales by his father, King Charles III.

Prince William’s mother, Diana, held the title of Princess of Wales before her. She tragically died following a car crash in August 1997. She was 36.

Morrisons returns major in-store feature after public outcry

The supermarket giant is reintroducing its Market Street meat and fish counters after customer feedback, following their removal from 70 stores last year as part of a cost-cutting procedure.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “Our Market Street counters are part of our DNA.

“They’re at the heart of our offer and a real differentiator for Morrisons.

UK High Street Shops That No Longer Exist

“We closed a small number of meat and fish counters last year – and have learned a lot from that.

“We’ve listened to customers and are now planning to re-open a number of these over the coming months.

“So, customers can look forward to having skilled butchers and fishmongers back in store to prepare their meat and fish just the way they like it.”

Thirty-five meat and 35 fish counters were closed across the UK, but Morrisons has now confirmed that its Great Park Newcastle, Herne Bay, Yeadon, and Bolton Dawes shops are among the first to see the return of the service.

The spokesman said: “The first meat and fish counters have already re-opened at Great Park Newcastle, Thornbury, Herne Bay, Yeadon and Bolton Dawes, with more to follow soon.”

Additional stores are expected to have their Market Street counters reinstated in the coming months.

The counters will include flatbeds and “grab and go” options, offering customers greater convenience.

Morrisons have also said to have “significantly improved” their waste yield for the counters since the closure last year.

The spokesman said: “The re-opened counters will incorporate flatbeds and grab and go options, and all of the significant learnings on yield and waste that the business has made over the last twelve months, to make them more efficient, while delivering the traditional counter service that customers love.”

‘My husband got revenge on entitled neighbour’s kids during parking row’

Published

on

Daily Mirror

A woman and her husband were left fuming when their neighbours allowed their daughter’s friends to repeatedly park on the lawn – so her husband came up with a cunning plan

A woman and her husband were stunned when their neighbour apparently believed it was acceptable to let their daughter’s friends use their lawn as an impromptu car park. Seeking a calm resolution, the couple cleverly blocked the space with pots before heading off for the weekend, hoping to prevent any unwanted vehicles from parking there.

Liv Bee shared the audacious story on TikTok. With a knowing smile, she captioned her video: “Our neighbour lets her teenage daughter’s friends park in our yard, so my husband put these pots on our property line before we left town to go on a trip.”

When they returned home, they found the pots had been shifted and the cars were once again sitting on their grass. Rather than starting an argument, Liv explained her husband chose to set up his folding chair and wait “for them to come out” to tackle the matter face-to-face on his own property.

She included a playful warning for the teenagers and wrote: “Sweeties, if you’re reading this, be prepared. This man has been in a car with his two kids, his wife, and two dogs for a whole day.

“He’s in rare form, ladies,” Liv wrote, displaying her husband boldly repositioning the pots around the vehicles in a calculated act of protest.

The comments section erupted with shock at the neighbours’ bold intrusion onto private property, prompting demands for firm action.

One individual sternly suggested: “Call a tow truck. One company for each car. Don’t pay attention to which one gets which car.”

Frustration mounted as another suggested that such blatant disrespect was only feasible because of an absence of repercussions. “They knew they weren’t supposed to be parking there, or they wouldn’t have moved the markers! No accountability is why people pull this s***,” fumed a TikTok user.

A separate commenter described their cunning response: “Had a neighbour behind me continue using my side lot to drive through to his I asked him to stop multiple times and even put signs up for private property no trespassing.”

They went on: “So I eventually put a board with nails in the ground, which just happened to be in the tracks he drove. I used those nails to help clean the grass and leaves off my rake for lawn maintenance. How was I supposed to know it was gonna get his tires?”

Words like “weird” and “entitled” were thrown around liberally by some observers regarding the brazen neighbours, with others urging Liv and her husband to challenge them – though, apparently, conversation had already proved unsuccessful.

The irritation reached its peak in a blunt statement from an annoyed onlooker: “I said it on a different post today, but I’ll say it again, the level of audacity and entitlement in the world is astronomical.”

A further commenter said: “Anyone saying that these property owners shouldn’t care about people parking on their grass after asking and putting up things to make it obvious they don’t want people there… are the problem.

“These same people are teaching their children to be entitled and disrespectful.”
