BOSTON (AP) — The defense rested its case Friday in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial after eliciting more testimony about her mental state before she strangled her three young children.

Prosecutors then began calling rebuttal witnesses before attorneys make their closing arguments in the trial, which is likely entering its final days.

Clancy, 36, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges in the deaths of Callan, Dawson and Cora Clancy, who ranged from 8 months to 5 years old. They were found in the basement of the family’s home in coastal Duxbury, Massachusetts. Clancy jumped from a second-story window after strangling the children and remains paralyzed from the waist down.

Clancy’s lawyer, Kevin Reddington, hasn’t disputed that she killed the children but says she should not be held criminally responsible because she had postpartum psychosis, a rare mental illness linked to the stress, sleep deprivation and hormonal changes that follow childbirth. Prosecutors argue that Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, planned the killings.

Reddington sought to bolster that defense by having the jury hear from more of Clancy’s family members, who detailed her worsening mental health before the January 2023 killings. He also called a psychologist who met with Clancy after the killings.

Clancy’s mother, Paula Musgrove, described her daughter as a dedicated and loving mom whose mental health began declining in October 2022.

In a text message displayed to the jury, Clancy wrote: “Mom, will you please come up and stay with me for a bit? I’m really sick. Something is wrong.”

Musgrove also recalled a more alarming disclosure in December. Musgrove, Clancy and Clancy’s then-husband, Patrick Clancy, were in the couple’s kitchen when Clancy said she had to tell them something.

“She told us she had thoughts of harming the children,” Musgrove said.

Clancy’s former mother-in-law, Susan Clancy, testified that Lindsay Clancy begged for help in the months leading up to the killings. The jury was shown texts between the two in which Lindsay Clancy spoke about fears that she had developed a dependence on benzodiazepines, but couldn’t sleep without taking them.

Prosecutors argue that Clancy contrived to get her husband out of the house the day of the killings. They have attempted to show that while she was getting treatment for anxiety, insomnia and depression, she wasn’t suffering from psychosis.

‘Jacob’s a proper romantic and he wanted Kendall to have that amazing view over London where you can see the stars,’ an insider told The Sun. ‘It costs £60,000 a night to stay there. But upgrading was worth the money.’

Shania Care-Slede, from Hyde, appeared via video link at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court this afternoon (August 21).

She was arrested in July and eventually charged with arson, arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered and dangerous driving following a moorland fire at Dovestone Reservoir.

Before her pleas were heard by the court, prosecutor Iain Simkin KC asked for the arson and dangerous driving charges to be separated, to which Judge Tina Landale agreed.

Care-Slede, who was represented by David James, pleaded not guilty to both arson and aggravated arson.

She went on to plead guilty to the dangerous driving charge.

A provisional trial date has been set for May 17 for the counts of arson and sentencing for the dangerous driving has been set for September 29.

Care-Slede was previously granted bail following a hearing at Minshull Street Crown Court on July 20.

The fire broke out at the Saddleworth reservoir on Saturday, July 11, and firefighters worked for weeks to contain the blaze and make the area safe.

Police have previously said it is continuing their enquiries into the Dovestone fire and have asked the public to stop sharing posts and speculation online about the incident.

What of the competitive action this weekend? As it is a sprint weekend, there is not a lot of preparation time, with just one practice session before sprint qualifying. In that it was a fairly close fight at the top, and it was Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, who was fastest of all. Behind him was the McLaren of Lando Norris who was 0.121sec adrift then George Russell, who will be looking to kickstart his title campaign here, a further 0.004sec behind him. 

Then came the two Ferraris of Lewis Hamilton (0.190sec) and Charles Leclerc (0.289sec) before a fairly significant gap of 0.659sec to Oscar Piastri in sixth. Verstappen was down in 11th, nearly 1.4sec off Antonelli’s ultimate pace but 0.5sec or so ahead of new (and old) team-mate for the weekend, Liam Lawson. 

It was a tricky session for the drivers, though, as it began damp on a showery and blustery day by the Dutch seaside. Several drivers ran wide and off the track, though they all avoided anything more serious than gravel rash. The rest of the day looks to be drier but there are still a few showers around and the wind is all over the place, as it often is here.

The former Wales captain is taking on a new role at a critical time

Former Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones has joined the Ospreys’ board of directors with immediate effect.

The former lock, who made over 250 appearances and won three Celtic League and Pro 12 titles with the Ospreys during his playing career, has made his return at a crucial time for the region as it fights for its continued existence, having been pitted against the Scarlets in a direct battle for survival under Welsh Rugby Union plans to cut the number of professional teams from four to three.

Jones, who was born and raised in Swansea, has been appointed to strengthen the board with the wealth of experience he gained during his playing career, as well as in his life outside of rugby. Further details of his responsibilities are set to be confirmed in due course.

The Ospreys announced on Friday afternoon that the 40-year-old will join the board immediately and will no longer provide punditry or analysis on matches involving the region, having also moved into media work after hanging up his boots.

“Ospreys Rugby Limited today announced the appointment of Alun Wyn Jones to its Board of Directors, with immediate effect,” a club statement read. “The appointment reflects a deliberate step by the Board to strengthen its capability at a critical time for the region, as the Ospreys continue to develop both on and off the field and navigate the wider challenges facing professional rugby in Wales.

“Jones joins the Board as a director with defined responsibilities, bringing experience from across rugby, his post-playing career experience and the public sector, alongside a strong understanding of Swansea, the Ospreys and the region.”

As his appointment was confirmed, five-time Six Nations winner Jones said: “For me, this is about bringing together my experience from rugby, business and life after playing, to help drive long-term growth and stability for the organisation.

“What I’ve built up on and off the field speaks directly to this role and to where the region wants to go. There’s a real opportunity here, not just for the Ospreys, but for the wider development of Swansea.

“I know the game, I know the city and I know the region. I played for Swansea RFC and came through the Ospreys and national academy. I understand both the history here and the greater potential that exists.

“I have remained in contact with some staff and members of the Board. I have an understanding of the challenges facing rugby in Wales and the Ospreys,” he continued. “Equally, I can see the plans around the region, the development of St Helen’s and the energy within the supporter base.

Lyons gang order brutal attacks on senior Daniel hood

The Lyons crime clan have ordered brutal machete attacks on rival members of the Daniel family.

Senior members of the Lyons gang are understood to have instructed Ross McGill’s Tamo Junto (TMJ) to launch the revenge attacks after the slaying of Eddie Lyons Jnr and Ross Monaghan in the Costa Del Sol last year.

The first attack took place on the city’s Curzon Street during the early hours of Friday morning before the hoods are believed to have travelled to Honeywell Drive in Stepps. The individuals targeted are understood to be Ronnie Daniel, 41, and Robert Daniel, 51.

Sources told the Record the TMJ footsoldiers ripped into the first property in Glasgow’s Maryhill before trashing the home in their pursuit for Ronnie.

The TMJ gang then travelled to Stepps in an attempt to target Robert but he managed to flee the scene. It comes just weeks after Police Scotland claimed the gang war had come to an end.

Banned driver who stole Maserati and killed great-grandfather jailed

A disqualified driver who caused the death of a great-grandfather by crashing into the garden where he was working and hitting him with a stolen Maserati has been jailed for more than 13 years.

John Bell, 74, suffered “non-survivable injuries” when he was struck by the car and pinned against the wall of a house in Broughty Ferry near Dundee on April 13 this year.

Fraser Garden, 55, admitted causing Mr Bell’s death by dangerous driving at a hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh last month.

He also admitted theft of a motor vehicle, driving without insurance, driving while disqualified, and failing to provide a blood sample for drug testing.

Garden was jailed for 13 years and six months when he returned to the court for sentencing on Friday.

Rangers thugs handed football ban after Old Firm disorder

Two Rangers thugs have been banned from every football stadium in the UK for their part in the shameful disorder which marred the Scottish Cup Old Firm clash at Ibrox.

Mackenzie Graham and John Smith were separately caught on camera during the chaotic scenes which erupted after Celtic knocked Rangers out of the competition on penalties in March.

Graham, 21, from Glasgow, was filmed jumping over a fence and leading a group of supporters onto the pitch, repeatedly encouraging others to join him.

Smith, 19, from Peterhead, was captured throwing a bottle into the Celtic support before he was apprehended by police officers in the stands.

The disorder came as both sets of supporters stormed onto the pitch at the end of the quarter-final, with police, stewards and players assaulted and flares thrown.

Mum beaten black and blue after gang storm home in middle of night

A mum was beaten black and blue in her own home and left with a bleed on her brain after a row over a dog fight.

Annette Robertson, 49, was asleep in her bed when she was woken by a knock at the door at around 3am on Monday, August 3.

She told how she was battered by a vicious gang who stormed her property and attacked her and her 19-year-old daughter Remy, who had just returned from work at a nursing home.

The thugs and the mum had an earlier run-in after their dog bit her elderly Lhasa Apso.

She claims that they burst through the door of her house in Kilmarnock before repeatedly stamping on her head and kicking her before breaking a broomstick in two to strike her with blows across her body.

Recalling her ordeal, Annette told the Record: “I thought I was going to die.”

Dad used bow and arrow to shoot squirrel in front of kid

A dad used a bow and arrow to shoot a squirrel in his garden in front of a child on Christmas Day. The small creature was “pinned against a wall” but somehow survived, a court heard on Thursday, August 20.

Matthew Cumming was charged after a shocked neighbour reported him to an animal welfare charity. Cumming, 36, was fined £185 when he admitted an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act.

Airdrie Sheriff Court heard the incident happened at his home in Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, on December 25 last year.

Sheriff James Spy fined Cumming £175 then asked: “Is there a victim surcharge for squirrels?”

Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes has been given a 10-match ban for the role he played in on-field clashes after his side were beaten 1-0 by Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.

Fifa’s disciplinary committee has also handed his team-mate Nahuel Molina a seven-match suspension.

Argentina have also been ordered to play their next two home matches with 50% capacity, though one match of that sanction is suspended.

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) has been fined $321,000 (£235,000) for breaches of the Fifa disciplinary code relating to using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature, team misconduct, and discriminatory chants and gestures by its supporters.

Fifa have ordered that $100,000 (£73,000) of the fine must be invested in a plan to combat discrimination – and $100,000 (£73,000) of the fine is suspended, with a probationary period to apply.

After defeating England 2-1 in the World Cup semi-final, several Argentina players held up a banner claiming Argentine sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory.

Last month, Fifa appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to assess what happened after the final whistle at the New York New Jersey Stadium, when multiple Argentina players and backroom staff were involved in altercations with Spain players.

As well as their suspensions, Paredes and Molina will both pay fines of $90,000 (£66,000).

Spain midfielder Gavi will serve a one-match suspension and pay a fine of $30,000 (£22,000) for his part in the post-match confrontations, as has Argentina’s Thiago Almada.

Roberto Ayala, a member of Argentina’s coaching staff, has been given a three-match suspension and a fine of $30,000.

The match suspensions will only be enforced in international fixtures.

Several people have been injured after a sword attack at a high school in Sweden, local authorities say.

Police said they had arrested one man after the incident at Brinell School in Fagersta, central Sweden.

Officers were called to the scene just after 14:00 local time (13:00 BST) on Friday, with some reports in Swedish media saying the suspect was shot in the leg by police.

Fagersta council did not specify the number of wounded, but said police were searching the building and that eight other schools had been placed under lockdown measures.

Police have said there is currently no danger to the public.

In a post on X, Sweden’s Prime Minsiter Ulf Kristersson described the attack as a “serious incident,” and said “we do not know what lies behind the act, but we know that police are working very intensively”.

Sweden has experienced a number of attacks on educational institutions in recent years.

The country experienced it’s worst-ever mass shooting in 2025, where 11 people, including the gunman, died at an adult education centre in Orebro.

This led to the government tightening the country’s gun laws after it was found that the suspect legally owned four rifles, three of which were found in the school where attack took place.

Two teachers were killed in a violent attack on a secondary school in Malmo in 2022 – an 18-year-old student later confessed to the attack.

In 2015, a teacher and a pupil were killed in a sword attack at a school in Trollhattan.

A Chief Nurse for the hospital said the offences are ‘deeply distressing’

A nurse has admitted to making indecent images of children. Adam Feary was employed by the The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn NHS Foundation Trust as a nurse.

In January 2023, the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) received a referral from the trust outlining how Feary had been arrested at work by the police. He had been arrested following an allegation of making indecent photographs/pseudo photographs of a child.

The former nurse was charged on March 21, 2025 and subsequently admitted to the offences at Norwich Crown Court on August 12, 2025. He was convicted for three counts of making indecent photographs/pseudo photographs of a child, possessing a prohibited image of a child, possessing extreme pornographic image/images portraying an act of intercourse/oral sex with a dead or alive animal and for possessing a paedophile manual.

On November 20, 2025 at King’s Lynn Crown Court, Feary was sentenced to 18-months in prison suspended for 18 months, an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and placed on the sex offenders register for 10 years.

Following Feary’s conviction, he faced an NMC hearing. According to the NMC report, the Judges’ comments said the paedophile manual “encourages people to offend and descends into a considerable amount of detail”. The panel also recognised the sentencing Judges’ comments which stated that “any normal human being would be appalled by the collection of paedophilic images you had on our computers”.

The panel found that Feary has demonstrated a “repeated pattern of behaviour and deep-seated attitudinal concerns”. The report said: “It considered the large volume of images found with over 14,000 images of children in total and nearly 2,000 images being Class A images which are the most serious.”

Dawn Collins, Chief Nurse at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, said: “We are aware of the conviction of a former member of nursing staff and recognise that these offences are deeply distressing. Our thoughts are with anyone affected by this case. The individual was arrested by police in January 2023 following an investigation of which the Trust had no prior knowledge. He was immediately suspended from duty, and a full internal investigation was undertaken.”

The panel noted that Feary’s conduct in the proved charges occurred outside of his nursing practice and found that “it had not in the past put patients at risk”. However, the panel identified he had breached the “fundamental tenets of the nursing profession and therefore brought its reputation into disrepute”.

The panel recognised that whilst Feary had eventually pleaded guilty to the charges, there was no evidence to “demonstrate insight, remorse or remediation”. As a result, the panel concluded that Feary would be struck off from the NMC register, the most serious sanction. This prevents the former nurse from working in that profession.

Ms Collins added: ” His employment with the Trust was terminated in July 2023 and he has since been removed from the Nursing and Midwifery Council register.

“The safety and wellbeing of our patients and staff is our highest priority. We take matters of this nature extremely seriously and work closely with the police and other agencies whenever concerns are raised.”

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital King’s Lynn serves a catchment population of between 250,000 and 330,000 people. It’s the nearest hospital for people in parts of Fenland in northern Cambridgeshire.
