Others had previously voiced their opposition to the Met’s plan to commemorate Galliano.

Julie Menin, speaker of New York City Council, said, external: “After my numerous and lengthy meetings and conversations with the Met, I am pleased that they have agreed to not honour John Galliano.

“From the beginning, I have told them that I strongly disagreed with this decision, and at this rising time of antisemitism, it had served as a gut punch to the Jewish community.

“This is the correct decision, as the harm and pain this was causing was simply unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, which aims to counter antisemitism, said that with antisemitism at “crisis levels”, honouring Galliano would be “misguided”.

“Even Galliano ultimately recognised what the Met should have done from the start,” he added. “This was the wrong move at the wrong moment. Timing matters.”

Galliano is regarded by some as one of the greatest fashion designers and returned to the fashion industry following his conviction, serving as creative director of Margiela for a decade until 2024.

John Swinney mapped out his next five years at an onion bhaji summit at Stirling University’s Pathfoot Building on Friday.

It was there that SNP MSPs, MPs and council group leaders met for an away day to talk strategy.

The First Minister and SNP chief executive Callum McCaig – a former Government special adviser – led the sessions.

Tuesday’s Programme for Government was the main focus, but there was a broader political discussion about where the SNP finds itself.

Swinney allies believe their man, who has had nearly 19 uninterrupted years in Government, is at the peak of his powers.

May’s Holyrood election win gave him a personal mandate after years in the shadow of Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon.

He is also surveying the wreckage of his rivals.

Reform UK, which is full of rookie MSPs, is isolated at Holyrood and struggling to make an impression.

Scottish Labour is divided and demoralised, having slumped to 17 MSPs three months ago.

The 38 per cent won by Swinney in May – the SNP’s lowest constituency total in nearly two decades – was the same as Labour’s best ever result in 1999.

Voters reduced the Scottish Tories to a rump, while the two parties that improved their standing – the Lib Dems and Greens – are nowhere near the SNP on seats.

One senior SNP source said of the Government: “The ball is in our court. We are in a position to get things done.”

The key themes of the PfG will include tackling child poverty, combating violence against women and public sector reform.

The SNP source said Swinney’s “tone” will be markedly different and predicted he will reach out to the other parties.

Sturgeon was focused on the Greens – a partnership that ended in disaster – but Swinney’s big tent will include the Lib Dems and Labour.

The insider said: “We think we have a dance partner for everything we are going to do.”

Part of Swinney’s objective is to ensure the opposition parties back the Government on policies they agree with.

In the last term, the SNP and Labour agreed on a national care service, but a mutual loathing between senior figures in both parties saw the plan die.

Culling NHS boards, which Swinney is expected to announce, should not be a problem for Scottish Labour given it was one of its manifesto commitments in May.

The First Minister also believes four key posts are crucial for him to do his job properly in Government – chief of staff, Permanent Secretary, Principal Private Secretary and SNP chief executive.

A source close to the FM said he is known to be happy with the team he has around him.

He also believes the SNP group is an upgrade on before and, with Jenny Gilruth, Stephen Flynn and Mairi McAllan occupying senior Cabinet positions, succession planning is in the pipeline.

However, pitfalls lie in wait for Swinney.

The independence movement is impatient and the First Minister cannot shake off the failed Sturgeon strategy of simply demanding indyref2 from Westminster.

A likely shift in position on oil and gas – where Swinney is expected to back new drilling – could trigger a backlash among climate-conscious members.

And the looming iceberg of a £4.7bn budget black hole will bring endless difficulties for Swinney.

The First Minister has a five-year plan, but he remains a hostage to events outside his control.

But former chef Jack has also been addressing his “bad relationship” with alcohol over the last 12 months.

“I’ve made a lot of personal growth throughout the last year and one of the things I recognized needed a lot of work was my relationship with alcohol,” he revealed in a recent interview with presenter Will Njobvu.

“You don’t realise it when you’re in it. And it’s hard to say that you have a bad relationship with alcohol because you’re not waking up at seven in the morning drinking vodka before work. That’s a problem with alcohol.”

The newfound reality star continued: “A bad relationship with alcohol could be many things. I have realised my relationship with alcohol, I use it as a coping mechanism, a stress reliever to take the edge off.”

He explained that his alcohol use increases when he feels stressed. “When I feel stressed I drink more. When I feel very stressed I drink very much and self-destruct,” Jack said. “And that is something that over the last year I’ve been working on massively. [But] we still drink, we still party.”

The Netflix star has received overwhelming support following this admission, with one fan on TikTok commenting: “Impressed by him, well done.”

Jack’s confession comes after a very divisive stint on the reality show. Fans were left conflicted about the reality star when he vanished from his shared apartment with Faye after a party, and seemingly hid his iPhone location from her.

He later explained that he took a long walk to clear his head, and admitted his actions were “selfish”.

Viewers felt his sudden disappearance was a “red flag” and urged Faye to think twice before walking down the aisle. But Jack appears to be back in the public’s good books since the show came to an end.

There is growing speculation that a Lindsay Clancy verdict may be imminent because of how the jury is dressed. 

The jury of three men and nine women started deliberating on Thursday afternoon and have so far only asked one question about the case.

On Monday, crime reporters in the courtroom noticed that they appeared to be dressed more formally, sparking speculation that today may be the day that a verdict is reached. 

Other online commentators have picked up on the fact that two of the jurors are wearing pink – the same color Lindsay Clancy supporters have worn since the start of the trial.

Clancy is on trial for killing her three children Cora, five, Dawson, three, and Callan, eight months, using exercise bands at her Duxbury, Massachusetts, home in January 2023. She has admitted to the slayings but pleaded not guilty to murder. 

Jurors are now in their third day of deliberations. Defense lawyer Kevin Reddington confirmed to the Daily Mail that the jury requested to see the two bags of pill bottles and the knife found by police on the night of the killings on Friday. 

The defense argued that the former labor and delivery nurse was suffering from postpartum depression and psychosis brought on by overmedication, while prosecutors maintained that she was aware of and in control of her actions. 

A jury of nine women and three men, who are non-sequestered, will decide if the Massachusetts mom is guilty of first degree murder, second degree murder or manslaughter, or if she is not guilty by reason of insanity.

What sentence is Lindsay Clancy facing?

Lindsay Clancy is on trial for the murders of her three children, Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at her home in Duxbury in January 2023.

She does not deny she killed them, but has pleaded not guilty and claimed she is not responsible for her actions because she was suffering postpartum psychosis after being prescribed a powerful cocktail of drugs to cope with depression.

What happened to the Clancy children?

On January 24, 2023, Clancy announced she’d had an exhausting day looking after their three young children so she asked husband Patrick if he didn’t mind going out on an errand. He just needed to pick up some children’s medicine and a takeout dinner order as she’d been too tired to cook, she told him.

Patrick, 36, who worked in software sales for Microsoft, was happy to oblige. But when he returned to their home in the well-to-do Boston coastal suburb of Duxbury less than an hour later at around 6pm, he discovered that their happy family existence had been snuffed out in an act of almost unimaginable violence.

After going upstairs to find his wife, who he imagined was giving the children a bath, he discovered their second-floor bedroom door was locked and had to force his way in. Inside, there was blood on the floor, a bloody knife on the nightstand and the room was chilly as a window had been left open.

He ran downstairs to find his wife lying barely conscious outside. She had cut her wrists and neck before jumping out of the window, falling some 20ft onto frozen ground. She told him she’d tried to kill herself, adding – when he asked – that the children were in the basement.

Patrick stayed by her side for the next 10 minutes after dialing 911, convinced that she might die before the paramedics arrived.

Only when they turned up did he hurry inside to find the children – five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and Callan, just eight months. They were indeed in the basement – they had all been strangled with resistance bands.

‘She knew what she did was wrong. She could conform her behavior to the law and chose not to,’ Sprague said.

‘You know it was deliberate premeditation because of the way she killed them and the way they died.’

Sprague continued: ‘She didn’t see them in that moment as individual human beings with rights, with dreams, with futures.

‘She didn’t bring them up to their beds; she left them, discarded on the basement floor, like broken toys, like she was done playing the game. You know, to a moral certainty, she is guilty.’

Since the pandemic, more people are looking to settle down somewhere that is easily accessible for work, while still benefitting from a rural location while off the clock. One town, just across the border from Cambridgeshire, sits perfectly in between London and Cambridge.

Royston is a historic market town, which has the unique feature of a historic cave. It also has excellent transport links to two major cities. Commuters can travel to Cambridge by train in less than 20 minutes or drive to the city in less than 30 minutes (depending on the traffic). To get to the capital, it takes less than an hour to arrive at King’s Cross station.

Even better, house prices in the charming town are more affordable than the average price across North Hertfordshire. According to Office for National Statistics, the average house price in North Hertfordshire was provisionally £423,000 in June 2026. House prices in Royston had an overall average of £394,976 over the last year, according to Rightmove.

Royston’s claim to fame derives from its accidentally discovered cave. It was found while the workmen were erecting a bench in the butter market above in 1742. A millstone was found in the ground which when lifted, uncovered a vertical, well-like shaft.

Toeholds had been cut into the chalk to form steps. A small boy volunteered to make the first descent and found the cave to be filled with earth and debris.

Wishing to find treasure, the shaft was enlarged and the cave was emptied. This uncovered extensive carvings in the lower part of the chamber.

The carvings are mostly Christian in depiction and medieval in style. There are four prominent carvings of saints in the cave. According to Royston Cave, these are: St Christopher, patron saint of travellers; St Katherine, holding a representation of the spiked wheel associated with her martyrdom; St Laurence, holding a depiction of the gridiron on which he was martyred; and a military saint, possibly St George, holding an upturned sword. The sword points to a line of thirteen figures, assumed to be Jesus and his disciples.

Though its existence has been revealed, Royston Cave remains a mystery. There are no records of its age or purpose and its origin has puzzled visitors and historians alike for centuries. The attraction hosts tours for people to visit.

The town almost appears too good to be true with its brilliant location and historical landmarks. Aside from those, the town centre also offers an array of shops such as Card Factory, La Belle Vita, and Ladds.

It is also home to several cafes including Kooky Nohmad, Horsebox Coffee Shop and Moreno’s Cafe. To dine, there are also several pubs including The Chalk Hare, King James Pub, and The Green Man. The Jolly Postie on Baldock Street is also a crowd-pleaser among locals and recently underwent a huge refurb.

More exciting news for the Scottish high street.

Glasgow shoppers will soon be treated to anther exciting opening. It comes amidst a flurry of announcements for a ‘world-famed’ pizza chain and a luxury dessert parlour over the past few weeks.

Oliver Bonas will officially be setting up shop in Glasgow Fort. The major shopping and leisure destination shared the news on social media which led to locals admitting they were “absolutely buzzing”.

At present, the official opening date has not yet been revealed but the Daily Record has approached Glasgow Fort for more information. We will update this story once we hear back.

Once opened, it will take the high street firm’s total across Glasgow to four. Other branches can be found on Gordon Street, Byres Road and in the Silverburn shopping centre, with the latter only opening at the end of 2025.

Founded in 1993, the lifestyle brand got its name from founder Oliver Tress and his then partner Anna Bonas, the cousin of Prince Harry’s ex-girlfriend Cressida Bonas. As of today, it operates more than 91 stores across the UK and the Republic of Ireland.

Known for its “distinctive” take on fashion and homeware, the brand curates its own design-led collections. Alongside vibrant clothing, it also offers quirky, unique gifts that feature bold, playful prints.

Glasgow Fort has teased the upcoming new branch in a Facebook post that reads: “New store alert!! Oliver Bonas is coming to Glasgow Fort. Keep your eyes peeled for more info.”

Hundreds of shoppers have flooded the comments with their excitement, with many tagging their loved ones in the announcement, One such Facebook user wrote: “Actually buzzing.”

A fan of the brand itself wrote: “Good. Love Oliver Bonas.”

Someone who couldn’t hide their enthusiasm added: “Omg how exciting. I can’t wait.”

Meanwhile, one shopper jokingly quipped: “Ban me from the fort!”

It comes just days after it was announced that a popular fashion brand once featured in Vogue had opened in the St Enoch Centre. The Vanilla Group opened its first standalone Scottish store on Friday (August 28).

Measuring 2,000 sq. ft, shopers will find both the Pink and Blue Vanilla labels on shelves. The brand was once featured in the iconic fashion magazine’s June 2026 issue, with praise for its “accessible price point” and collections that “blend modern femininity with high street inspiration.”

The city is also set for a Rudy’s Pizza Napoletana, which will be a first for Scotland. The world-renowned brand is set to be located on 35 Gordon Street, with an opening date set for sometime this autumn.

Taking the UK chain’s total to 42 nationwide, Rudy’s has become famed for its light, double fermented dough and dedication to the authentic Neapolitan art. It has also been accredited accredited by the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana (AVPN) and ranked in the World’s 50 Best Pizzerias, ranking 23rd globally for 2025.

Around 200 tonnes of straw caught fire

A large straw fire “continues to burn out” three days later, a fire service has said. Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue was called to a large fire on Friday evening (August 28) on Stow Road in Kimbolton.

Firefighters arrived to around 200 tonnes of straw on fire. Nearby residents were warned to keep their windows and doors closed as the fire was expected to “burn for some time”.

The fire service has provided an update on the fire today (Monday, August 31). A fire spokesperson said: “Crews continue to revisit the area regularly to reinspect the fire. It will continue to burn out.”

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Cambridge South station opened to passengers at the end of June, but residents living nearby say the platform announcements are too loud

Cambridgeshire Live readers have been debating loudspeaker noise at the city’s newest railway station. Some describe the platform announcements as “deafening”, while others warn that reducing the volume could make travel more difficult for those who are hard of hearing.

Residents living close to Cambridge South have complained that platform announcements are so intrusive they have shattered the “peace and calm” of the neighbouring area. The station opened its doors to passengers at the end of June, providing rail links to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the biomedical campus, and Trumpington.

However, residents on the neighbouring Clay Farm estate say the announcement system is so loud that it can be heard from their homes and, in particular, from allotments in Hobson’s Park. Philippa Slatter, a local resident and former councillor, said there was considerable concern amongst those who visit their allotments seeking tranquillity.

The 75 year old said: “I should not be able to know where the next train is going to, but I can hear it from the allotments and I can hear it from my back garden.”

One commenter, Tartan53, writes: “So she never noticed any noise during the construction period???”

Aljan replies: “It is accepted that there will be noise during a construction project, her complaint is about the ongoing noise now construction has finished. That is not being unreasonable. The produce in her allotment is not interested in train times. The people on the platform also don’t wish to risk deafness with overly loud announcements.”

Campete2 adds: “Perhaps they could also fix the announcements so you can hear them properly on the platforms.”

Imner says: “Perhaps a slight re-alignment of the speakers is required, like more towards the ground than the sky?”

Skipper writes: “Agree. I have sympathy – the constant noise would drive me nuts.”
