Sam Neill’s friends and colleagues have paid tribute following the actor’s death at the age of 78.

The Jurassic Park actor died in hospital in Sydney on Monday. Family described his passing as ‘sudden and unexpected’ in a statement published to his Instagram page.

Richard E. Grant, who was a close friend of Neill’s, led the tributes on Monday, sharing a string of photos on his Instagram page and writing: ‘Knew @samneilltheprop for 3 decades and finally worked with him on PALM BEACH in 2018. An officer and a Gentleman in the truest sense.’

Richard, who lost his beloved wife Joan to cancer in 2021, then added his gratitude to his late friend who ‘guided and helped me through a very difficult time in my Life. Sail on, kind Sir.’

Toni Collette, a frequent collaborator of Neill’s and a longtime friend shared a heartbreaking tribute, writing on Instagram: ‘I love you, dear Sam. You hero. You legend. You sweetheart. Our great friend. You are already missed so very much. Continue in peace wherever you are.’

She added in another post: ‘My friend Sam left us this morning. Yes he was an incredible actor. But he was also the most beautiful, decent gentleman. A big hearted king with a dry, hilarious wit. I feel so lucky to have known him. When I think of Sam I always see him giggling. It is a terribly sad day.’

New Zealand prime minister, Christopher Luxon, paid tribute to the Northern Ireland-born star who was raised in New Zealand, saying in a statement: ‘He started out when there was barely a film industry in this country to speak of.

‘For more than fifty years he took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today – one of our greatest cultural exports. His work will be watched and loved long after all of us.’

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also shared a statement on X, writing: ‘Sam Neill starred in so many beloved Australian stories and he earned a special place in Australian hearts.

‘Wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, Sam fought illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction that gave strength to his every performance.’

‘He will be much mourned and long remembered. May he rest in peace.’

Nicole Kidman who starred opposite Neill in the 1989 thriller Dead Calm, said in a statement: ‘Sam was one of the greats … a joy to be around. We met when I was just 18, and he took me under his wing and we stayed friends for life. He was charming, kind, funny and intelligent. He will be greatly missed and my heart goes out to his family.’

Colin Trevorrow, who directed Neill in 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, recalled working with him on the film in his tribute.

‘Sam Neill was a deeply soulful and beautiful man. He was a friend and collaborator at a challenging time, and his strength gave us all strength,’ he wrote.

‘I’ll remember him for his tranquility, his love of wine, and for the calm assuredness he brought to his characters. It’s not every lifetime you get to befriend a legend. Forever grateful.’

Actor Alan Cumming commented on Neill’s Instagram: ‘Ahhh Sam, what a glorious beautiful man. You are missed. Sorry to the family for your immense loss.’

Kylie Minogue wrote: ‘Vale Sam,’ a Latin term for farewell or goodbye used in Australia.

Australian actress and Muriel’s Wedding star Rachel Griffiths, who worked on two films with Neill, wrote on Instagram: ‘Rest in peace Sam – for the characters chuckles and good company thank you. Love to all who loved you – you will be missed.’

Australian director Phillip Noyce, who directed Neill in the 1989 thriller Dead Calm alongside Nicole Kidman, told the Guardian: ‘Sam was perhaps the most gentlemanly actor I ever encountered. Level-headed and sincere in a show business world of crazy egos. His word was his contract.’

‘In a strange way Sam was responsible for my long career in Hollywood. When there were rumours that George Miller might have secretly directed Dead Calm, Sam assured the American producer, Mace Neufeld, that I was indeed the director – and Mace then signed me to direct Harrison Ford in Patriot Games,’ the director added.

Neill’s family said in a tribute: ‘It is with immense sadness that the whānau (family) of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia. Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,’ they said.

‘The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free. They would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.

‘More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.’

In April, Neill – who is best known for playing Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise – announced tests had found he was cancer free.

In an interview with Channel Seven, Neill detailed how close he came to death after chemotherapy stopped working. A costly, cutting-edge treatment prolonged his life.

Neill said: ‘I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business, but it was keeping me alive.

‘Then the chemo stopped working. I was at a loss and it looked like I was on the way out, which wasn’t ideal obviously.’

Neill underwent a special treatment called CAR T-cell therapy, which genetically modifies a patient’s own T-cells to recognise and destroy cancer cells. Private treatment costs around $AUD540,000.

‘I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing. I’m very, very excited that this can happen,’ he said at the time.

The treatment is currently in clinical trials to treat another blood cancer, myeloma.

Neill also said he was planning to make a return to acting.

‘It’s time I did another movie,’ he said.

Neill first went public with his cancer diagnosis in 2023 after being diagnosed with cancer the previous year, after initially experiencing swollen glands.

He found out about  his stage-three blood cancer while he promoted Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

In that film he reprised his role as Grant alongside original co-stars Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum alongside Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.

He told Australian Story at the time: ‘I’m not in any way frightened of dying. That doesn’t worry me. It’s never worried me from the beginning, but I would be annoyed.

‘I’d be annoyed because there are things I still want to do. Very irritating, dying. But I’m not afraid of it.’

Neill, who was born in Northern Ireland to an English mother and a New Zealander father, first disclosed the news of his illness in his memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This, where he writes in the first chapter that he is ‘possibly dying’.

Reflecting on life at the time, the seasoned actor once again said that he did not fear death, admitting, ‘I’m not afraid to die. But it would annoy me. Because I’d really like another decade or two, you know?’

‘We’ve built all these lovely terraces, we’ve got these olive trees and cypresses, and I want to be around to see it all mature. And I’ve got my lovely little grandchildren. I want to see them get big.

‘But as for the dying? I couldn’t care less.’

Neill shares a son, Tim, 40, with New Zealand actress, Lisa Harrow, to whom he was married between 1980 and 1989.

The star was married to Japanese makeup artist Noriko Watanabe from 1989-2017 and they share a daughter, Elena, 35. He also adopted Noriko’s daughter from her first marriage, Maiko.

Neill was born Nigel John Dermot Neill in Ireland, with his family moving to New Zealand in 1954.

He went by the nickname Sam, dropping Nigel after deciding Sam was ‘less awkward’.

‘I found I moved more easily in the world as a Sam. Nigel is an awkward fit in most circumstances. Imagine being a movie actor called Nigel Neill,’ he said in 2014.

Neill starred in three Jurassic Park films including the original in 1993, Jurassic Park III in 2001, and Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

He became a household name after playing palaeontologist Grant in 1993’s Jurassic Park alongside Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.

He would reprise the role in Jurassic Park III in 2001, and again in Jurassic World Dominion just four years ago.

He has recently worked on Godzilla x Kong: Supernova and The Last Resort, both of which are now set to be released posthumously in 2027.

On the small screen, Neill appeared in episodes of The Simpsons, Peaky Blinders, The Tudors and The Twelve.

Solicitor said people in Welsh town were ‘shovelling cocaine down their necks’

Published

on

Wales Online

A solicitor accused of being concerned in drug dealing supported a friend who had been barred from policing for life after testing positive for cocaine said the residents of a Welsh town were “shovelling (cocaine) down their necks”.

Ben Garvey, 38, of Port Talbot, is also accused of supplying steroids and of encouraging his friends to purchase cocaine in messages found in a WhatsApp group named ‘The Old C***s’.

He later went on to represent his cocaine dealer Daniel Baker, 34, who was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs and passed on messages from Baker’s runner Jake Blackburn, 28, to his client while he was incarcerated, Bristol Crown Court has heard.

A trial heard Garvey was a solicitor and was previously a partner at David W Harris Solicitors & Co based in Swansea, Pontypridd, and Talbot Green. Don’t miss a court report by signing up to our crime newsletter here.

The court heard the defendant’s association with Baker began in the summer of 2021 when it is alleged Garvey purchased cocaine from Baker on behalf of himself and his friends.

On Monday, the trial heard messages from the What’s App group ‘The Old C****s’, which included Garvey and David Kingdon, a former South Wales Police officer who was barred from the profession after testing positive for cocaine.

In a message to the group, Mr Kingdon told his friends he was “doing fine” after news of his misconduct hearing had spread.

In response, Garvey said: “It doesn’t need to be said brother but f*** everyone. We are your brothers and we will defend you to the hilt. Every c*** in Port Talbot is shovelling it (cocaine) down their neck week in, week out.

“If I see any cheeky c*** try and say anything they will be put in their place. We love you lots brother, that’s all you need to know. Chin up and crack on.”

In his opening to the court on Thursday prosecutor Ray Tully KC said: “[Garvey] was planning for a big night out and there was the suggestion they would need to have access to cocaine to have the use of during their big night out.

“The prosecution’s case is Daniel Baker, as of the summer of 2021, was the organiser of an organised crime group and that group was instrumental in the supply of cocaine.

“He came to be arrested in 2021 and following his arrest and seizure of electronic items messages came to light of Mr Garvey, the solicitor, arranging to meet with Mr Baker for the purpose of purchasing cocaine from him.”

It is alleged there were two meet-ups between Garvey and Baker in a 12-hour period during which the former purchased cocaine from the latter for himself and others. It is also alleged Blackburn sold cocaine to Garvey on Baker’s behalf when he was not available to do so.

Mr Tully said the most serious charge was of perverting the course of justice, which all three defendants are accused of.

Following Baker’s arrest on August 18, 2021, he asked to be represented by David W Harris Solicitors & Co. Mr Tully said: “He would have known Mr Garvey was a solicitor who acted for that firm and came to be represented by Mr Garvey, represented by someone he knew and supplied drugs to in the past.”

The court heard Garvey was in frequent phone contact with Blackburn following Baker’s remand in prison. One message from Blackburn to Garvey read: “Tell Dan Oxford’s sorted, everything else by tonight.”

Another message from Blackburn to Garvey read: “iCloud username and password.”

As a result of messages discovered on Baker’s phone Garvey and Blackburn were arrested and their electronic devices were seized.

It is alleged that messages on Garvey’s phone reveal he was concerned in the supply of steroids in 2013 and was part of a WhatsApp group called ‘The Old C***s’ in which he encouraged and “egged on” friends to purchase cocaine. Images taken from the group included photos and videos of cocaine and people using cocaine.

Garvey, of Vivian Park Drive, Sandfields, Port Talbot, denies perverting the course of justice, being concerned in the supply of Class A and C drugs, and encouraging or assisting in the commission of an offence.

Baker, of Silver Avenue, Sandfields, Port Talbot, denies perverting the course of justice. He previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

Blackburn, of Chrome Avenue, Sandfields, Port Talbot, denies perverting the course of justice but changed his plea to guilty to being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.

The trial continues.

Latest on Ann Widdecombe death as the home secretary gives update

Published

on

Belfast Live

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has given an update

A 28-year-old man arrested following the death of veteran politician Ann Widdecombe was “not known” to the government’s Prevent programme, the Home Secretary has confirmed.

Shabana Mahmood shared the update after counter-terrorism detectives officially took over the investigation into the death of the 78-year-old former MP and Reform UK spokesperson.

Ms Widdecombe was found dead inside her home in Dartmoor, Devon, triggering a major police search. Following initial enquiries, a suspect from South Yorkshire was tracked down and detained by officers over the weekend.

The 28-year-old white British man, who was initially arrested on suspicion of murder on Saturday, has since been rearrested under the Terrorism Act on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism.

The former Conservative minister and later Reform UK spokeswoman, 78, was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor at about 11.40am on Thursday after sustaining serious injuries.

Mr Taylor said: “Building on the progress made by our colleagues in Devon and Cornwall Police, we now have new information and evidence that means Counter Terrorism Policing is now leading the investigation.

“We are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack.

“Our priority is progressing this investigation quickly, with all the capabilities we have available to us. If anyone has any information, please share it with the police.

“We would like to thank local communities, the wider public and the media for their ongoing support and patience, and would ask them to continue to support us in the next stage of the investigation.”

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said on X that she will update the House of Commons this afternoon.

She said: “The police are pursuing multiple lines of enquiry to establish the motivation for this attack. I will be updating the House further this afternoon.

“My thoughts today remain with Ann’s family and friends, and all those who loved her.”

Police are asking anyone with information to come forward.

EastEnders star to leave 20 years after she took on the role

Belinda Owusu only recently came back to the show to reprise her role as Libby Fox after she first left EastEnders 10 years ago.

Libby returned to Albert Square last month after her mum Denise was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).

Libby has been involved in several dramatic storylines since she came back.

Why is Libby Fox leaving EastEnders?

As well as dealing with Denise’s diagnosis, her sister Chelsea has had to cope with her son Jordan being hit by Ian Beale after he had been drinking.

Libby has been trying to help her sister with her money problems by trying to repair the relationship between Chelsea and Jordan’s other grandmother, Sheila Atkins, who had been sending her cheques.

Chelsea had not been spending the cheques because she did not want to be associated with Sheila and Jordan’s dad, Gray Atkins, who was a serial killer.

Sheila had lied to Chelsea about not seeing Gray in prison so she could remain in Jordan’s life.

Viewers will see Denise return to the soap this week after spending some time in hospital, and Libby leaving again after her short return.

Libby could come back again to the show, as Denise is keeping it a secret that her treatment is not going well and she will have to do another round.

Belinda first joined the cast in 2006 and has appeared in many episodes of the soap over the years.

Libby was seen earlier this year in the flash-forward episode set on New Year’s Day 2027, after she left the show in 2017.

As well as starring in EastEnders, Belinda is best known for her role in Holby City, playing Nicky McKendrick.

She has also appeared in other popular shows, including Trigger Point, Father Brown, and Doctor Who.

Will you be sad to see Libby Fox leave EastEnders? Let us know in the comments below.

What Wicklow’s Tailteann Cup victory might mean for teams in Division Two next season

Published

on

Belfast Live

The ramifications of Wicklow’s remarkable comeback win will be felt in every corner of the country. Not just in Down. Every single team in Division Two will be looking over their shoulder in 2027

The outpouring of joy and emotion from Wicklow on Saturday evening was in sharp contrast to the pain and anguish written on the faces of the Down players at Croke Park.

As Oisin McConville stated afterwards, one team wanted Sam Maguire football, the other wanted the Tailteann Cup. Now Wicklow have both.

The ramifications of Wicklow’s remarkable comeback win will be felt in every corner of the country. Not just in Down.

Trailing by 13 points at the early stages of the second half following Shane Annett’s point, Wicklow pulled off another remarkable fightback to turn Down’s Sam Maguire dream into a recurring Tailteann Cup nightmare.

The stark reality for the Mournemen is there is every chance they’ll be back in the second tier competition next summer, partly due to Wicklow winning the Tailteann Cup.

That might make Conor Laverty think long and hard about whether he will remain in situ as Down manager.

They pulled off one of the results of the summer by beating the-then Ulster champions Donegal in Letterkenny.

One week later they were hammered by Armagh. That’s the cut-throat nature of the Ulster Senior Football Championship. The draw might be kinder to them in 2027 or it could be every bit as tough.

It isn’t just Down who’ll be dreading another summer in the Tailteann Cup.

Every single team in Division Two will now be scrambling to rethink their approach to next season.

There’s no chance of timing a run for the Championship.

For Division Two teams, the Championship starts in January.

When Tyrone were struggling for form earlier in 2026, there was almost a giddiness at the prospect of the Red Hands dropping into the Tailteann Cup. It was a long shot.

Not in 2027.

Malachy O’Rourke’s men, who are set to have four games away from home next season, will need to be on it from the word go.

The same goes for Derry who’ll be out to recover from yet another season that promised much and delivered little.

Louth might have been in the All-Ireland semi-finals last weekend. Next summer, they could be in the Tailteann Cup.

What a set-back that would be for Gavin Devlin’s men?

Monaghan are making excellent progress under Gabriel Bannigan. They’ve defied the doubters and coped with the retirement of a host of legendary figures in recent years.

Ulster finalists in 2026. Tailteann Cup 2027? It could happen.

So too could the unthinkable. It isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that Dublin aren’t involved in the Sam Maguire in 2027.

Despite Ger Brennan urging his elder players not to rush into any retirement decisions, Ciaran Kilkenny confirmed he is stepping away less than 24 hours after their All-Ireland semi-final loss to Kerry.

If others follow suit, Brennan could have a proper rebuild on his hands in year two.

Finishing in the top six in Division Two next season might not be enough.

There’s every chance the bottom three teams in Division Two next year drop down as it would only take one of Westmeath, Kildare or Offaly reaching a Leinster final to throw a proverbial spanner in the works.

The eight provincial winners get into the Sam Maguire along with the Tailteann Cup winners. The final seven places are filled according to the final League standings.

Westmeath reaching the Leinster final this year meant that Division Three champions Down were demoted to the Tailteann Cup.

Next season, Wicklow, as a Division Four side, will be in the Sam Maguire. Any Division Three or Four teams reaching a provincial final will put the squeeze on those finishing at the wrong end of the Division Two table.

Cavan made it into the Sam Maguire by the skin of their teeth this year. Dermot McCabe’s men might not be so lucky next season.

Tyrone accumulated just one more point in the League than the Breffnimen.

There’s also a crucial decision pending in Munster regarding the seeding in their provincial football Championship.

They deferred introducing seeding on the basis of League performance and, therefore keeping Kerry and Cork apart for the 2026 Championship.

Another deferrial isn’t out of the question given the backlash the mooted decision garnered from the likes of Clare and Limerick.

The Banner reached three Munster finals in a row. If Munster go with an open draw for 2027, that could, potentially, take another Sam Maguire slot away from the lower-ranked Division Two teams.

The 2026 Championship has been a rollercoaster of thrills, excitement, shocks and entertainment that reaches a crescendo on Sunday, July 26 when Kerry put their title on the line against Mayo at Croke Park.

For eight teams, their 2027 Championship season will begin in earnest in the depths of winter when the National Football League resumes in January.

Wales breaking news plus weather and traffic updates (Monday, July 13)

An army of pigeons perch atop Wales’ biggest hospital, many dozens of them surveying the patients and staff below. The birds flit in and out of gaping holes in the canopy over a staff entrance.

The state of Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales – a chronic problem for years – became a talking point again this week when pictures of the decaying canopy were shared online.

Large panels are missing from the sides, while a plastic sheet hangs in a forlorn attempt to cover an absent chunk of the underside.

“It’s absolutely disgusting,” wrote the Reddit user who posted the images. “This part of the hospital needs tearing down, otherwise it’s going to collapse at some point and cause serious injury or even (God forbid) death.” Full story here.

Trump unveils surprise candidate to fill Lindsey Graham’s shoes

President Donald Trump with Senator Lindsey Graham at a South Carolina campaign event in January 2023

President Donald Trump wants late Senator Lindsey Graham‘s sister to fill the vacant seat left behind after the South Carolina lawmaker’s sudden passing.

‘I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina,’ the President wrote on social media.

‘This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!’

Darline Graham Nordone, the late Senator’s younger sister, has never served in public office.

The South Carolina Governor is expected to speak Monday afternoon about the late Senator and the vacancy in Congress left by his passing.

McMaster is allowed to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of Graham’s term, which ends on January 3, 2027. The Governor may decide to appoint a ‘caretaker’ to the role who will not run for the seat in the midterms later this year.

It is unclear whether Darline’s appointment would be a ‘caretaker’ selection or if she would formally announce a run for his seat in a special primary election.

Graham’s death kicks off a one-week registration period for a special primary election so that a new candidate can swiftly fill the vacancy, according to South Carolina law.

The special primary election registration is slated to begin July 21, and the election would be held two Tuesdays later, on August 11.

If there is a runoff for the special primary election, it would follow two weeks later on August 25.

The winner of the special primary election would go on to face Democratic candidate Annie Andrews in the November race.

Already there is speculation about which South Carolina politicians may hop into the special primary election.

Lieutenant Governor Pamella Everette, Fox News host and former Congressman Trey Gowdy, Congresswoman Nancy Mace, Congressman Ralph Norman and more have been mentioned as possible candidates.

Lindsey and Darline Graham were incredibly close, and after the siblings’ parents died 15 months apart in the 1970s, the Senator, then 21, legally adopted his teenage sister and helped raise her.

The Senator never married or had children but noted that he did have a family, namely his younger sister.

The pair were raised in Central, South Carolina, near Clemson University. Their parents operated a bar and pool hall. The young Graham siblings lived in a room in the back of the establishment.

‘He’s kind of like a brother, a father and a mother rolled into one,’ Darline told the New York Times in 2015.

The Senator kept close tabs on his younger sister as the two grew up without their parents.

The Republican’s law school friends told NPR that Lindsey would visit his sister on weekends and would inquire about if she was keeping curfew and who she was spending time with.

After joining the Air Force as a military lawyer, he adopted Darline, ensuring that if anything happened to him that his benefits would flow to her.

Doctor Who Behind-The-Scenes Clip Puts Doomsday Scene In A New Light

Doctor Who Behind-The-Scenes Clip Puts Doomsday Scene In A New Light

A new behind-the-scenes clip has lifted the lid on the making of one of the most heartbreaking Doctor Who moments of its modern era.

Just be warned, you might not be able to see it the same way once you’ve watched it.

Back in 2006, viewers were left heartbroken at the farewell between David Tennant’s Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper, in the episode Doomsday.

In the devastating sequence, the Time Lord was seen fading away before he had the opportunity to tell his companion that he loved her back.

The Doomsday sequence is still considered by Who-vians to be one of the long-running sci-fi series’ biggest ever tear-jerkers, and to commemorate the episode’s 20th anniversary, the official Doctor Who social media accounts shared a new video from the set, revealing how the effect was achieved.

And it turns out that it mostly involved David running out of shot the second the camera wasn’t on him.

Props to Billie Piper for not just keeping a straight face, but actually managing to let out some guttural sobs, despite having just been subjected to her co-star’s silly little run…

In the two decades since Doomsday aired, Billie has made occasional appearances in Doctor Who – most notably in its most recent season finale, when Ncuti Gatwa’s Time Lord regenerated into a mysterious figure played by the I Hate Suzie star.

It’s also been revealed that “the BBC will put Doctor Who out to competitive tender this year”, meaning a new production company could be taking it over.

“Doctor Who remains an important part of the BBC and this tender underpins the BBC’s continued commitment to Doctor Who ensuring audiences will enjoy the show for years to come,” the BBC insisted at the time, noting that “details of the tender will be announced in due course”.

Prince Harry is feeling ‘really energised’ after visiting King Charles with Meghan and his children for first time in four years

Harry was said to be absolutely thrilled to have reconnected with his father in a meeting that saw Meghan, Lilibet and Archie also see the King for the first time since 2022

Prince Harry is said to be ‘buoyed’ and ‘really energised’ following his family reunion with King Charles.

The Duke of Sussex is ‘very happy’ that his wife and children joined him to spend time with his father and stepmother, Queen Camilla, at Highgrove, friends said.

Harry and his family are believed to have met the King and Queen between 3.30pm and 4pm on Friday, remaining with the couple for more than an hour.

The King is said to have been determined to see his grandchildren for the first time in four years during a week in which Harry suffered a crushing defeat in his privacy court case against the Daily Mail.

Friends of Harry claimed he was ‘buoyed, very happy and really energised’ after the meeting, which also marked the monarch’s first time meeting with Archie and Lilibet in four years.

His wife Meghan Markle, who was famously accompanied down the aisle by her father-in-law the King on their wedding day in 2018, was also present after secretly flying the family to Britain.

But the Duchess of Sussex skipped all of Harry’s Invictus Games engagements amid his ongoing dispute with the Government over taxpayer-funded police protection in the UK.

King Charles has faced criticism in some quarters for meeting Harry and Meghan after suffering years of potshots at the Royal Family from California since Megxit, including claims of racism.

But a royal source responded that ‘blood is blood’ when asked about the decision to meet.

‘Every journey of a thousand miles begins with one footstep,’ the source added.

Harry and his family are believed to have spent around an hour at Highgrove with King Charles and Queen Camilla.

The gathering was particularly significant because it marked the first time that Meghan, Archie and Lilibet had seen the 77-year-old monarch – who is still undergoing treatment for cancer – in person since 2022.

Earlier in the day on Friday, there had been clues that something important was unfolding when Harry arrived at an engagement for the Invictus Games at the National Exhibition Centre, near Birmingham.

An observer said: ‘Harry turned up at Invictus with a massive smile plastered all over his face.’

The family reunion at Highgrove had clearly put Harry in high spirits following a week dominated by negative headlines, including a row over his security and a crushing defeat in his court case over privacy against the Daily Mail.

On Saturday, after the visit to Highgrove, the Duke of Sussex was all smiles as he appeared at Scotty’s Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire.

Harry is the global ambassador for the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers, which supports bereaved children from military families.

During the festival, Harry posed playfully with children as he took part in ‘goat yoga’, surrounded by the animals. At one point, he joked: ‘Is there health and safety? Do they bite?’, before taking his place on a mat and performing the tree pose on one leg while miming goats’ ears with his hands.

As Harry lay on his back and the goats trampled over his body, someone in the crowd quipped that his security team should step in to ‘protect the crown jewels’.

The Sussexes are believed to have been staying at the Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire – the ancestral home of Princess Diana’s family and where she is buried on a private island in the middle of a lake.

It is not known if the Sussexes have left the UK.

Harry and Meghan, who quit as senior royals in 2020 and moved to California, have spoken about their wish to introduce their children to their British roots.

During his visit to Warwickshire, Harry said: ‘I love being here, this is the highlight of my month. Actually probably the last few months. It’s very easy to sit in your grief, to sit in your stress but, guys, if you are feeling it, share it.’

The meeting with the King and Queen came after weeks of speculation and uncertainty about whether Meghan and the children would accompany him to the UK.

The family had reportedly been on holiday in Portugal, staying at a beachside villa they own there.

Harry initially turned down an offer to stay at Buckingham Palace only to change his mind at the last minute. He was then told that the offer had been rescinded because Palace officials said it was impossible to prepare rooms for him at short notice.

The Duke arrived in Britain on Monday. The following day, he lost his High Court case which alleged wrongdoing by Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mail. The company was vindicated on all 97 counts brought by Harry and other claimants, including Sir Elton John, Elizabeth Hurley, Sadie Frost, Sir Simon Hughes and Baroness Doreen Lawrence.

Buckingham Palace confirmed on Friday that the meeting at Highgrove had taken place but declined to disclose any details of the ‘private family occasion’.

Earlier in the week, palace officials had privately described the prolonged drama surrounding the Sussexes’ trip as ‘wearying’.

Prince Harry has also recorded an episode on The Celebrity Traitors star Joe Marler’s podcast as part of his trip to the UK.

The Duke of Sussex recited his rarely used full name in the new interview, before poking fun at Marler’s co-host.

In a teaser for the upcoming episode of Joe Marler Will See You Now, the royal is asked for his full name by the former rugby player.

‘Henry Charles Albert David, Duke of Sussex,’ Harry replied, to which podcast co-host Jake Bhardwaj quipped: ‘It’s a long one.’

Harry quickly responded: ‘Alright, Jake,’ causing huge laughter from the podcast hosts and crew members behind the camera.

The teaser then showed the podcast hosts chanting ‘Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke, Duke’ as he arrived on the set before Marler says, ‘what the f*** was that’.

Marler and Bhardwaj will speak to the prince about trauma, coping mechanisms, identity and grief, as well as lighter topics.

Since launching last year, Joe Marler Will See You Now has amassed 9.5million long form streams and 170million social media views to date, and previous guests have included his fellow Celebrity Traitors contestant Nick Mohammed, comedian Katherine Ryan and former QI presenter Stephen Fry.

The full podcast episode is set to be released at 5pm on Monday, July 13.

Teesside dad who murdered his three-month-old is jailed

Bradley Thomas, 23, will serve a minimum of 14 years after he became frustrated at little Emmerson Oak who refused to settle after a night feed.

Teesside Crown Court heard how he continued to deny inflicting fatal injuries on his young son, and delayed calling the emergency services for 30 minutes after, sending a distressing video to his partner.

Emma Dowling, prosecuting, said the jury found Thomas had ‘forcefully and vigorously shaken’ his young son in the early hours of the morning.

She said: “The jury saw video footage of Emmerson physically suffering for a short period of time before he must have lost consciousness.”

The court heard how Thomas failed to get immediate help for his son despite him being clearly in distress and waited for 30 minutes to call 999.

During his trial, jurors heard how death was inevitable due to the ‘catastrophic’ injuries suffered by his son.

The court heard Emmerson’s mother, who spoke in support of Thomas during the trial, had declined to make a victim statement following his conviction for murder.

Nicholas Lumley KC, mitigating, said Thomas had been described as a “loving father” and “nobody can believe he did what the jury found him to have done”.

Mr Justice Sheldon KC told Thomas that he would be sentenced to a mandatory life sentence following his conviction for his son’s murder.

He said: “You shook your three-month-old baby son with such violence and force that he was caused severe and irreversible brain injuries.

“Emmerson died three days later as a result of those injuries.”

Thomas was told he must serve at least 14-years in prison before he can be considered for parole.

“It must not be forgotten that you committed denied Emmerson a life,” he added.

“He had his whole life ahead of him, and that life was cut short by his murder.

“By your own actions, you have lost a much-loved son and the tragedy of this loss will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on you, just as it will have that impact on the rest of Emmerson’s family.”

During the trial, jurors heard how Thomas told police and medics that Emmerson had fallen off his knee when he nodded off on the sofa.

However, the medical experts dismissed his version of events after identifying multiple bleeds on the brain consistent with ‘vigorous shaking’.

The judge added: “You lost your temper. For a minute or so you shook Emmerson with so much force he was caused fatal injuries.

“You regretted what you had done immediately afterwards. You hoped Emmerson would recover but tragically that did not happen.”
