Why Pope Leo has excommunicated a group of conservative Catholics

Why Pope Leo has excommunicated a group of conservative Catholics

The decision by Pope Leo XIV to excommunicate members of the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) is the latest twist in a long-running saga between the Vatican and this contentious traditionalist group. It is yet more evidence of the deep polarisation between conservatives and progressives within the Catholic church.

The Vatican issued a statement on July 2 to the effect that SSPX had “committed an act of a schismatic nature” by ordaining four bishops the previous day at a ceremony in Écône, the village in Switzerland where SSPX was founded in 1970.

The society was established and named after Pope Pius X by the controversial French archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. He was an adherent to the uncompromising positions Pius (who reigned from 1903 to 1914) held against “modernism” – the attempts by some Catholics to apply contemporary intellectual and moral trends to the teachings of the church.

In 1907, Pius X had declared modernism to be an attack on all elements of the church by those who “vaunt themselves as reformers”.

Those who joined the SSPX reacted specifically to reforms brought about within the church by the Second Vatican Council (often known as Vatican II).

Convened between 1962 and ’65, Vatican II was reportedly described by Pope John XXIII as an attempt to “open the windows and let in the fresh air”. It sought to recognise the rapidly shifting world of the 20th century, and reaffirm the role of the church in guiding Catholics by interpreting these events “in the light of the Gospel”.

Many reforms occurred within the church as a result, including the introduction of worship in vernacular languages, replacing the older Latin Mass (often referred to as the “Tridentine Mass”, as it was standardised after the Council of Trent in the 16th century).

Lefebvre and his supporters saw this as a Modernist revolution. But they were the ones who came under suspicion for this divergence in such important matters of dogma. In 1975, the society was “suppressed”, meaning it was no longer recognised by the Church as legitimate.

This proved the start of a much longer struggle, as members of the SSPX continued to act regardless of instruction from the Holy See.

In 1976, Pope Paul VI described Lefebvre and his movement as suffering from “a bitter deafness” which had placed them “outside of obedience and communion with the Successor of Peter and therefore of the Church”. He implored them to “reflect calmly, without prejudice” and “to become aware of the deep wounds they otherwise cause the Church”.

“We invite them again to think,” he concluded. But his appeal appeared to fall on deaf ears.

The struggle between the SSPX and the Vatican boiled over in 1988 when – as at the ceremony a few days ago – four priests were consecrated as bishops at Écône. The event occurred despite a warning from John Paul II, and resulted in the excommunication of Lefebvre and the four bishops.

The pope viewed the act as a grave disobedience not only against his authority, but “the unity of the Church”.

But as a concession, he acknowledged the “feelings of all those who are attached to the Latin liturgical tradition”, and opened a commission to attempt to return those in the SSPX to the church while “preserving their spiritual and liturgical traditions”.

An acknowledgement of a wider conservative desire to retain the Latin Mass and the forms of worship used before Vatican II came in 2007, when Pope Benedict XVI decreed that these older forms could be celebrated under specific conditions.

Two years later, Benedict lifted the excommunication of the four bishops from 1988, believing a productive dialogue had emerged. Talks continued between the SSPX and the Vatican in the hope of achieving a reconciliation.

In 2012, however, the Vatican declared: “We cannot put the Catholic faith at the mercy of negotiations. Compromise does not exist in this field. I think that there can now be no new discussions.”

Discussions did in fact continue during the papacy of Francis, but the SSPX was considered to have “departed from communion with the Church”. Archbishop Gerhard Müller, head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith which decides matters of doctrine, said that “they must change their attitude and accept the Catholic Church’s conditions”.

A Church divided

The decision by Leo XIV to excommunicate the SSPX follows several months of warnings from the Vatican not to proceed with the consecration of the new bishops.

In a letter addressed to Father Davide Pagliarani, superior general of the SSPX on June 30, Leo wrote: “I urge you to consider carefully the spiritual good of the faithful, because the schismatic act you are about to undertake would deprive them of the licit and, in some cases, even valid reception of the Sacraments, which they love and seek for their sanctification.”

But the SSPX proceeded and the pope has acted.

This episode reflects the considerable tension among conservative Catholics over the reforms of Vatican II. While the size of the SSPX is tiny compared with the global number of Catholics (some 600,000 members in a global community of 1.4 billion), the polarisation of opinions within the church are arguably of a much larger scale.

Pope Francis recognised as much in 2022, when – to mark 60 years since the opening of Vatican II – he argued for the need to “overcome all polarisation and preserve our communion” in light of divisions since the 1960s.

While Leo XIV is still relatively early into his pontificate, the renewed excommunication is a stark reminder that polarisation remains a pressing issue for the Catholic church, particularly when it comes to modernisation.

But like the saga of the SSPX, this issue shows no sign of resolving itself anytime soon.

Two Romanians jailed for stabbing journalist on behalf of Iranian regime

Published

Two Romanian nationals have been jailed for stabbing a journalist in Wimbledon on behalf of the Iranian regime in an attempt to “silence” him.

Their target, Pouria Zeraati, works for the Persian language channel Iran International, that is critical of the Iranian government.

Nandito Badea, 21, and George Stana, 25, attacked him in March 2024 as he walked to his car near his home, just around the corner from the All England Lawn Tennis Club.

At the Old Bailey in London, Stana was sentenced to 12 years in prison and Badea to eight, after being convicted last month of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “For anyone to act on behalf of Iran and to plan and carry out an attack on a journalist, on British soil, is deplorable.

“Today’s sentence sends a clear message to the Iranian regime and those who do its bidding.”

The knife attack left Zeraati in hospital needing stitches for three stab wounds in his leg.

Police said that in the lead up to the attack, two men approached the victim as he left his home, heading towards his car.

One asked for money, before the victim was then held by a man, and stabbed multiple times in the leg by the second man.

They then made off on foot before getting into a blue Mazda.

The court heard that Stana drove the Mazda getaway car. Zeraati said Badea wielded the knife, while a third man, David Andrei, held him while he was being stabbed.

The men then left the UK on a flight to Geneva from Heathrow Airport. Andrei is still in Romania, Badea and Stana were extradited to the UK.

Sentencing Badea and Stana, Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb said “I am sure that this was an attack for – or for the benefit of – a foreign power.”

“The victim Pouria Zeraati was not selected at random.”

“He had previously been subject to threats,” she said, and there had been posters put up in the Iranian capital Tehran with his photograph and the words “Wanted. Dead or alive”.

The judge concluded that Stana knew or should have known that the attack was being carried out on behalf of Iran, but said she was not sure that Badea knew.

The court heard that the attack had been planned for “at least one year” with extensive surveillance of Zeraati’s home in Wimbledon.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, Zeraati said the attack had caused him “significant sleeplessness”.

“The incident has left me scared and anxious,” he said.

He explained that he has had to move address several times and that he is afraid of going out on his own.

“I find it difficult to go to restaurants for fear of being followed,” he said. “I am always looking over my shoulder.”

Iran International said the attack on their journalist “was appalling – terrifying for him and his wife, and shocking to his colleagues at Iran International.

“Our journalists are subject to an ongoing campaign of intimidation by the Islamic Republic of Iran – both in Iran itself where their relatives are routinely threatened and treated harshly as well as to themselves on British soil.

“We are more than thankful for the protection given us by the police and the UK authorities.”

All the signs Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are already married before Madison Square Garden wedding celebration

Published

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's blockbuster wedding weekend may have delivered plenty of headline-making moments, but the biggest surprise was growing speculation that the couple had already secretly married. Above, in March

If there’s one thing Taylor Swift loves, it’s keeping fans guessing.

And if the whirlwind surrounding her blockbuster wedding weekend is anything to go by, the biggest surprise wasn’t the celebrity guest list, the Madison Square Garden takeover or the lavish celebrations.

It may have been that she and Travis Kelce had already quietly tied the knot.

For months, the superstar couple kept fans guessing over every detail of what many have dubbed the wedding celebrations of the decade.

But as Thursday’s intimate gathering gave way to Friday’s lavish celebrations in New York City, a growing number of Swifties became convinced the real ceremony had already taken place behind closed doors.

After Page Six reported that Swift and Kelce had already legally married in Nashville, Tennessee, before the New York festivities, the singer’s famously eagle-eyed fanbase insisted the clues had been hiding in plain sight all along.

As Thursday’s intimate gathering gave way to Friday’s lavish celebrations in New York City, a growing number of Swifties became convinced the real ceremony had already taken place behind closed doors. Above, in 2024

One of the biggest talking points emerged after Kelce shared a behind-the-scenes clip during a live recording of his New Heights podcast in June.

The sweet video showed Swift playfully spoon-feeding the Kansas City Chiefs star while making airplane noises.

While casual viewers simply saw another adorable glimpse into the couple’s romance, devoted fans immediately zeroed in on something else entirely.

One Swiftie shared the clip online with the caption: ‘Mother literally showed u her wedding band,’ before adding, ‘they are married.’

The brief moment quickly went viral as eagle-eyed fans zoomed in on the jewelry adorning Swift’s hand.

Although many acknowledged that the ring appeared to be on the ‘wrong’ hand, plenty insisted that the sparkling platinum band sitting beside a dazzling diamond looked remarkably like a wedding ring.

Given Swift’s long history of dropping subtle Easter eggs for fans to decode, many couldn’t help wondering whether she had quietly hidden one final clue in plain sight.

The wedding-band theory gained even more momentum after the Page Six report claimed the couple had already legally wed in Nashville.

The city holds particular significance for Swift, who relocated there as a teenager to pursue her music career and still owns homes in the state.

One of the outlet’s sources claimed the pair quietly exchanged vows in an intimate legal ceremony, while another alleged they celebrated with only a small group of loved ones before the much larger celebrity event in New York.

The report also claimed the legal ceremony did not take place in New York.

Under New York law, marriage licenses are valid for 60 days after being issued and generally require a 24-hour waiting period before a ceremony can legally take place, unless a judicial waiver is granted.

That detail quickly became another piece of the puzzle for fans convinced the legal paperwork had been completed elsewhere before the lavish public celebrations.

Even Swift’s private jet movements found themselves under intense scrutiny.

According to online flight trackers, the singer’s aircraft made a series of stops in the days leading up to the festivities that happened to coincide with cities connected to both families.

The jet reportedly remained in Nashville before traveling to Philadelphia, where Kelce’s father Ed lives and where brother Jason Kelce and sister-in-law Kylie are based.

It then flew to Tampa, where Taylor’s father Scott lives, before returning to Nashville and eventually heading back to New York.

The flights prove nothing on their own, but for fans already convinced a secret ceremony had taken place, they appeared to fit neatly into the timeline.

Adding even more fuel to the fire were growing whispers that Madison Square Garden itself may have been little more than an elaborate decoy.

Businessman Anthony Jabin, who claimed to be attending as the guest of an invited friend, hinted during an interview with TMZ that ‘there’s a decoy’ and teased, ‘it’s not what everyone thinks,’ while declining to elaborate further.

Then came another clue that Swifties insist can’t be ignored.

Throughout wedding week, virtually every report referred to the festivities simply as a ‘celebration.’

Thursday’s ‘intimate gathering’ drew comparisons to a rehearsal dinner, while Friday’s star-studded festivities were consistently described as a ‘celebration’ rather than explicitly referred to as the wedding ceremony itself.

To devoted Swifties, that wasn’t semantics – it was another Easter egg.

If the legal ceremony had already happened, then everything unfolding in New York would simply be one enormous post-wedding party

If the legal ceremony had already happened, then everything unfolding in New York would simply be one enormous post-wedding party

If the legal ceremony had already happened, then everything unfolding in New York would simply be one enormous post-wedding party.

Regardless of whether the rumors ultimately prove true, the New York celebrations have certainly lived up to the hype.

Madison Square Garden underwent an extraordinary transformation ahead of the festivities, with truckloads of flowers, trees and lavish décor arriving at the iconic venue as workers raced to create what many compared to a fairy-tale setting.

Huge black drapes were installed to shield celebrity arrivals from photographers, while strict security measures surrounded the arena.

Confidentiality notices reportedly warned vendors and staff against revealing any details about the event, and nearby streets were heavily controlled as preparations intensified.

Celebrity guests also began arriving throughout the week, with Thursday’s intimate gathering reportedly hosting around 100 close friends and family before Friday’s much larger celebration, which has been widely reported to include roughly 1,000 guests.

Whether the rumors ultimately prove true remains to be seen.

But if Swift and Kelce really did pull off a secret ceremony before the world’s eyes turned to Madison Square Garden, it would be the ultimate Taylor Swift Easter egg – one hidden in plain sight while everyone was looking the other way.

JOHN MURDOCH’S DRIVE TIME: We get behind the wheel of the new Kia electric EV5 SUV and discover Ineos will be providing vehicles to military based on Grenadier range

Published

on

Daily Record

Three trim levels of EV5 SUV are available, called Air, GT-Line and GT-Line S.

In this instalment of Drive Time, John gets behind the wheel of the new electric EV5 SUV from Korean manufacturer Kia and discovers that Ineos will be providing vehicles to military based on the Grenadier range.

Kia has developed an excellent line-up of EVs – the latest of which is the EV5, a mid-sized SUV that is a sound alternative to the company’s popular Sportage.

It is slightly larger than the Sportage and it takes most of its looks from the larger EV9, so its bold rather boxy design looks solid and gives the car a strong road presence.

The styling means that there are stacks of room in the cabin with space for family and luggage.

Three trim levels are available, called Air, GT-Line and GT-Line S., while an AWD version and a sporty GT are on the way.

All models feature distinctive front light clusters, tough bumpers, squared-off wings, sculpted wheel arches, vertical rear lights, a large tailgate and either 18 or 19-inch alloys wheels.

The cabin is neat and tidy with three infotainment screens merged behind a curved panel.

All the entertainment features are on the left side while the middle screen deals with the climate and the right covers all the important driving data like speed and range.

Powered by a long-range 81.4kWh battery, the EV5 has a claimed range of up to 329 miles and prices start from just over £39,000 going all the way up to £47145 for the top of the range model.

As you would expect from Kia, all models boast lots of equipment and the range topper has all the goodies including powered heated and ventilated seats which even offer a massage function.

There is also a reversing camera, wireless charging and an eight speaker Harman Kardon sound system.

There is a nice mixture of physical and touchscreen controls as well as an AI personal assistant.

The car also offers fingerprint recognition technology which drivers can use to store their favourite settings.

With 214bhp on tap the EV5 is a solid performer with a top speed of 102mph and a sprint time of 8.4 seconds to 62mph.

Some rivals in this demanding sector are more dynamic but the EV5 cruises nicely on the motorway and it is not fazed by twisting country roads where it feels well balanced.

The steering is well weighted and offers good feedback.

You can operate the car with just one pedal thanks to an i-Pedal setting which can bring the car to a standstill without touching the brakes.

There are four drive modes and steering wheel paddles allow you to adjust the strength of the regenerative braking.

The suspension does a good job of smoothing out rough roads making the SUV feel refined.

The large 566 litre boot is accessed via a large powered tailgate and with the split 60:40 seats folded flat the capacity increases to 1,650 litres. Lots more storage space is also available inside the cabin.

Charging the battery from 10 to 80 per cent takes 30 minutes on a rapid charger and 70 minutes if plugged into a 50kW outlet.

A 10 to 100 per cent charge takes seven hours and 20 minutes on an 11kW port.

The EV5 boasts a five star Euro NCAP rating, so it is packed with all the latest safety features and driver aids.

As usual, it carries the KIA seven years or 100,000 mile warranty, going up to eight years for the battery.

My only gripe was that the cabin did feel a little dark and a bit bland but all its good features may result in it being as popular as the Sportage.

Meanwhile, Ineos Automotive, SMT Defence and NMS UK have joined forces to form Team Grenadier, a UK-anchored industrial collaboration dedicated to delivering a range of vehicles ideal for deployment by the UK Ministry of Defence, based on the INEOS Grenadier platform.

Mamdani, 34, replied: ‘My recommendation to all New Yorkers is to stay inside and stay cool. And if you happen to be getting married at Madison Square Garden, you will be staying inside and you will be staying cool. And I think it’s a good example to set for the city at large.’

Mamdani also discussed Taylor and Travis’ wedding while talking about preparations for the soccer World Cup. The mayor – who is a huge soccer fan – said at the time: ‘We are the biggest city in the country. We are used to big events, and we are incredibly excited for this one.

‘We know it coincides with the Knicks’ Finals run. We know it coincides with July 4, America 250, Taylor Swift’s wedding — all happening at the same time – and we are so excited to welcome the world here.’

Elsewhere, New York Post column PageSix has reported Taylor and Travis have already legally married ahead of their big day.

One source told the publication: ‘They are already married.’

PageSix also reported rumors suggested the pair may have exchanged vows in a small, private ceremony in Tennessee, where the singer moved with her family when she was a teenager to pursue a career in country music.

Echo Comment: Should pubs open and kids stay up for England's match?

It is good for publicans and it is good for the country that people should be encouraged to come together to wave the flag in a show of non-political unity

It may be a headache for police, but they should be able to respond to the wishes of the general public who pay their wages and only rarely get occasions to let their hair down.

Equally, the public should respond sensibly and respectfully to what could be a great and memorable occasion – the true tragedy of revelry is that sporting defeats coupled with excess alcohol lead to a rise in domestic violence and that can never be excused.

The other big question is should the kids be allowed to stay up and watch a match which may drag on to 4am?

School is important, even as term nears its end, and no child should miss lessons.

It is great to see innovative schools coming up with imaginative solutions, like showing the match in full before the first school bell.

We tend to agree with England’s German manager, Thomas Tuchel, when he said: “There’s so much school to go to, but the World Cup is every four years – let them watch.”

One Durham school has told its pupils that this is a lesson in resilience – you may stay up late but you must be at your desk and you must find a way to do your work.

And that is the adult world. It is full of awkward choices and compromises, of finding ways to get things done, of pushing through until the work is done.

Judging by the frustrating way the team have been playing of late, you are going to need every ounce of resilience to watch this match through to the final whistle. C’mon, England!

Prepare for DRAMA: All of the celebrity exes forced to reunite at Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding celebration

Published

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are gearing up for their wedding celebration today at Madison Square Garden, and the extravagant event is expected to see roughly 1,000 of their famous friends come together to commemorate their love

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are gearing up for day two of their wedding celebration at Madison Square Garden, and the extravagant event is expected to see roughly 1,000 of their famous friends come together to commemorate their love.

Hollywood royalty, sports stars, actors and singers have all descended upon New York City for the star-studded event.

But it appears there may be some tension during the dazzling celebration, as a ton of celebrity exes will be forced to reunite.

Between Jack Antonoff and Lena Dunham, Suki Waterhouse and Bradley Cooper and Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding, there could be some very awkward run-ins at the wedding celebration.

Swift’s longtime music collaborator Antonoff and her close friend Dunham were both spotted arriving separately at Madison Square Garden on the first day of Swift’s wedding parties, so it’s safe to assume they’ll be at the party this evening.

The two dated for five years from 2012 to 2018, and Dunham later confessed to cheating on the producer in her memoir Famesick.

Waterhouse and Cooper are both confirmed to be attending the wedding celebration; they were together from 2013 to 2015.

Cooper has since moved on with Gigi Hadid, one of Swift’s oldest friends, which is how he scored an invite to the coveted event.

Hadid may also have to see one of her exes at the party: Zayn Malik. It’s unclear whether or not the One Direction singer will go to the wedding celebration, however, he and Swift famously released a song together in 2017, called I Don’t Wanna Live Forever.

Both Goulding and Sheeran were spotted in New York this week, so it’s safe to assume they’ll be there.

The exes have both been a part of the Cruel Summer songstress’ inner circle for years, so it comes as no surprise.

They were briefly rumored to be in a relationship back in 2013, and were spotted holding hands at the MTV Video Music Awards.

It’s heavily believed by fans that Sheeran’s song Don’t was written about Goulding leaving him for Niall Horan, however, Goulding has denied this.

‘I did go on a few dates with Niall, but I was never in a relationship with Ed,’ she told Elle UK in 2025.

‘I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing.’

Both Sabrina Carpenter and Camila Cabello may have to see their ex Shawn Mendes at the wedding celebration.

But it appears there may be some tension during the dazzling celebration, as a ton of celebrity exes will be forced to reunite, including Jack Antonoff and Lena Dunham, who dated for five years from 2012 to 2018 (seen together in 2014)

The three were embroiled in an infamous rumored love triangle back in 2023.

Mendes and Carpenter were seen spending a lot of time together in February of that year, however, the singer denied at the time that they were a couple.

Months later, Mendes was spotted kissing his ex Cabello at Coachella.

Many fans believe Carpenter went on to write her song Taste about the situation, in which she sings: ‘I heard you’re back together and if that’s true / You’ll just have to taste me when he’s kissin’ you / If you want forever, I bet you do / Just know you’ll taste me too.’

It’s unconfirmed if Mendes is attending Swift’s wedding celebration, however, he and the pop star have a long friendship; he opened for her on her 1989 World Tour and the two collaborated on a reimagined version of her song Lover in 2019.

If Swift’s pal Phoebe Bridgers – who previously released a song with the bride, called Nothing New – attends, she will risk crossing paths with her ex Paul Mescal.

Mescal is currently dating another one of Swift’s close friends, Gracie Abrams, so it’s likely he’ll be at the wedding celebration.

Selena Gomez – who is confirmed to be attending – might have to take a walk down memory lane if Swift’s pal Taylor Lautner shows up.

Swift and Lautner briefly dated in 2009 and lost touch afterwards, but reconnected and rekindled their friendship in 2023.

The singer even invited the Twilight star on stage during her Eras Tour and featured him in the music video for her song I Can See You later that year.

He and Gomez briefly dated in 2009, before he started his relationship with Swift.

Swift and Kelce partied late into the night on Thursday for what was believed to be a rehearsal dinner with 100 of their closest friends, including Hadid, Cooper, Gomez, Antonoff and Dunham, among others.

There are conflicting reports about whether Swift and Kelce have already married, but there are plans for an enormous party with 1,000 guests at Madison Square Garden today.

Northern Ireland weather outlook for first weekend of July

Published

on

Belfast Live

It comes after a record breaking month of June on the weather front thanks to the recent heatwave

It’s the first weekend of July after a record breaking month of June on the weather front as the recent heatwave brought a run of sweltering days and balmy nights.

A punishing heatwave affected many parts of the country during the last week of the month, with temperatures topping 30C somewhere in the UK for seven days in a row from June 21-27.

Northern Ireland and Scotland both saw their joint fourth warmest June.

The mean temperature across the UK was 15.6C, ranking behind only 15.8C in 2023, according to figures published by the Met Office.

The exceptionally hot and humid conditions in the last week of the month led the Met Office to issue a rare red warning for extreme heat for much of southern England and south-east Wales.

The warning ran for three consecutive days – the longest period of time such an alert has been in place.

Dr Emily Carlisle, of the Met Office, said: “June’s high temperatures are part of a broader pattern of warmth during 2026. So far, five of the first six months of the year have recorded mean temperatures at least 1C above average, with only January seeing below-average temperatures.”

Scientists warned the severity of last month’s heatwave – which affected much of mainland Europe as well as the UK – would have been virtually impossible 50 years ago.

This year is shaping up to be a multiple record-breaker for heat in the UK.

As well as the highest peak June temperature since Met Office data began, 2026 has also seen the highest May temperature on record, with 35.1C measured on May 26 at Kew Gardens in London.

England and Wales both experienced their warmest spring on record in 2026, thanks partly to the heatwave that hit the UK at the end of May.

Sunshine totals in June were above average for the UK, England and Wales, although “not by as much as might be expected” given the intensity of the heat, the Met Office added.

The high humidity “meant skies were often hazier and cloudier than during a less humid heatwave, limiting sunshine totals despite the exceptional temperatures”.

Northern Ireland and Scotland recorded below average sunshine totals.

Despite the exceptional heat, June was wetter than average for the UK and all four nations, due to a series of low-pressure weather systems earlier in the month that brought cloudy and unsettled conditions to many areas.

Here’s what we can expect over the coming days.

Saturday:

A mainly dry and cloudy day with just the odd shower, although these may become more widespread in the west later. Some occasional brightness in the southeast. Maximum temperature 19°C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

A changeable, often cloudy and breezy few days with spells of rain, but some drier and brighter periods too, especially in the east.

UK long range weather forecast: Wednesday 8 July – Friday 17 July

High pressure will dominate across England and Wales into next week, likely extending its influence into the northern UK with time. This will bring dry and warm conditions with plenty of sunshine for much of England and Wales, but there is a chance of thunderstorms at times.

Scotland and Northern Ireland will see more cloud at first, with periods of rain at times. Through next week the high pressure may extend northwards to bring periods of drier and warmer weather to most of Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Winds will be light to moderate for most, though stronger around northern hills and coasts near low pressure systems. Temperatures becoming widely warm, perhaps locally hot in parts of the southeast, although not as hot nor humid as seen in the past week.

Killer of Henry Nowak seeking to appeal against conviction and sentence

The Independent Office for Police Conduct said on Wednesday that it is investigating two officers for potential gross misconduct, including potential failures to realise that Mr Nowak needed urgent medical attention, to take action when he said he had been stabbed and could not breathe, and the decision to arrest and handcuff him instead of providing first aid.
