5 Fights the UFC Needs To Make Next After UFC Noche

Noche UFC gave us a little bit of everything. Jean Silva reminded everyone why he’s one of the most fun fighters at 145 pounds, Brandon Moreno got himself back in the win column, Alexa Grasso made a serious case for another title shot, and a couple of new names started forcing their way into the conversation.

Now comes the fun part: figuring out what’s next.

Here are five fights I’d like to see after Noche UFC:

1. Jean Silva vs. The Winner of Alexander Volkanovski vs. Movsar Evloev

Jean Silva is running out of reasons to wait.

The No. 6-ranked featherweight submitted Jose Miguel Delgado in the third round of Saturday’s main event, giving him back-to-back wins after losing to Diego Lopes last year. Silva was supposed to fight Yair Rodriguez before Rodriguez withdrew, and honestly, Silva did everything he could with the replacement.

The UFC already has Alexander Volkanovski and Movsar Evloev booked for UFC 333. Whoever walks out with the belt should have Silva waiting for them.

Silva is 29 years old, exciting as hell and has won six of his last seven UFC fights. At this point, another contender fight feels like the UFC just making him prove the same thing again.

Give him the winner.

2. Alexa Grasso vs. Winner of Natalia Silva vs. Wang Cong

This one feels pretty simple.

Alexa Grasso just beat Manon Fiorot by unanimous decision and immediately put herself back into the title conversation. She’s also already been through the championship grind, having held the UFC flyweight title and fought Valentina Shevchenko four times.

The women’s flyweight title is currently tied up with Natalia Silva and Wang Cong set to fight for the vacant belt.

Give Grasso the winner.

She has the name, the history and now another big win to back it up. There’s really no reason to make her fight another contender before getting another shot at gold.

3. Brandon Moreno vs. Manel Kape

Brandon Moreno needed a win. Badly.

After back-to-back losses to Tatsuro Taira and Lone’er Kavanagh, Moreno was starting to look like a former champion who might be slipping down the flyweight ladder.

It wasn’t some vintage Moreno performance, but that’s kind of the point. He got the job done and can finally move forward.

So let’s give him a name: Manel Kape makes a ton of sense.

Kape is currently ranked No. 2 at 125 pounds, while Moreno sits at No. 10. It would be a huge opportunity for Moreno without immediately throwing him into another title fight. And there’s history here, too. Kape has actually mentioned Moreno as a potential opponent in the past.

If Moreno really wants to prove he’s still a championship-level fighter, this is the kind of fight that can change the conversation.

4. Tommy McMillen vs. Yair Rodriguez

This might be the fun one.

Tommy McMillen just went through a wild three-round fight with Marwan Rahiki and kept his undefeated record intact at 12-0. The guy has already picked up multiple UFC bonuses and has made it pretty clear that he’s not interested in taking the slow route.

Yair Rodriguez, meanwhile, was supposed to fight Jean Silva at Noche before withdrawing.

Now he’s sitting there without a fight. Why not put these two together?

McMillen gets a massive step up against one of the most recognizable featherweights in the UFC, while Yair gets a dangerous young fighter who isn’t going to be afraid to stand and trade.

And let’s be honest: McMillen vs. Yair sounds like a ridiculous amount of fun.

5. David Martinez vs. Aiemann Zahabi

David Martinez keeps making it harder and harder for the UFC to ignore him.

He just picked up another win at Noche, beating Dan Ige by decision and continuing his run through the bantamweight division. Before that, Martinez beat Rob Font and Marlon Vera, establishing himself as one of the division’s fastest risers.

Now give him Aiemann Zahabi. Zahabi is ranked No. 7, with Martinez sitting right behind him at No. 8.

It’s the kind of fight that makes sense without overthinking it.

They’re both ranked. They’re both trying to get closer to the title picture. And if Martinez beats another top-10 opponent, we’re going to have to start talking about him as a legitimate contender rather than a prospect.

At some point, the UFC has to stop calling him a prospect.

That time might be now.

MLB Thursday Best Bets: 3 Picks for the Playoff Race

The American League West race is even with 10 games left as the playoff battles intensify on Thursday. The Texas Rangers have won four straight games to catch the Houston Astros with identical 76-76 records.

The Rangers and Astros also are part of a tight wild-card field that sees the fading Chicago White Sox holding the third and final spot by one game. The Rangers host the Boston Red Sox and the Astros host the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.

In the National League East, the Philadelphia Phillies visit the New York Mets in the opener of a four-game series and their focus may soon be totally on the wild-card berth as they trail the Atlanta Braves by 4 ½ games. The Phillies are second in that derby, a half-game behind the Chicago Cubs.

BOSTON RED SOX AT TEXAS RANGERS

Texas won the first two games of the series with the Red Sox to get a pivotal nine-game homestand off to a stellar start. The Rangers racked up 13 hits and went 7-for-16 with runners in scoring position during Wednesday’s 7-3 victory.

Texas had been floundering most of the season but suddenly is a hot club at a very good time. The Red Sox are slumping with five losses in their past seven games but it would take an even bigger collapse to fall out of the AL’s second wild-card spot.

Willson Contreras increased his career-best homer count to 27 with a two-run shot Wednesday that gave him a career-high 81 RBIs. Right-hander Sonny Gray is 8-3 with a 3.21 ERA against Texas but it feels like this one won’t be a winning effort.

KANSAS CITY ROYALS AT HOUSTON ASTROS

Remember when Yordan Alvarez appeared to be sailing toward AL MVP honors while making a run at the Triple Crown? Yeah, that guy who had 35 homers at the end of July has gone deep just four times since though he does still lead the league with a .310 batting average.

But this version of Alvarez has brought Houston back to the pack and the Astros have lost seven of their last 10 after splitting the first two games with the Royals. As for Kansas City, Bobby Witt Jr. has just 18 homers and 54 RBIs and the real power is being supplied by guys named Carter Jensen (24) and Jac Caglianone (23).

Caglianone was a first-round draft pick (sixth overall) in 2024 and Jensen was a third-round choice in 2021. Right-hander Seth Lugo is the most important Kansas City player Thursday and he is 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA in five career starts against the Astros while struggling with Alvarez (4-for-11, one homer).

PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES AT NEW YORK METS

When the Phillies beat the Washington Nationals 3-0 on Wednesday, it was just their fifth win in 13 games, hindering their chances of making a run at the Braves. The good news is they now face the Mets, who have been playing out the string for the second half of the season and have lost four straight games entering this set.

New York scored seven runs during the skid and five of them came in one game. Perhaps seeing right-hander Aaron Nola will help as he is 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA in two starts against the Mets this season. Juan Soto has five homers in 46 at-bats against Nola and Francisco Alvarez is 5-for-10 with three homers against him.

Kyle Schwarber leads the majors with 45 homers and he has torched New York pitching this season with six homers and 13 RBIs in just 34 at-bats. However, right-hander Nolan McLean (2-1, 0.47 in three career starts against Philadelphia) has held Schwarber to 0-for-7 with two walks, which will make for some interesting confrontations in this game.

Rory McIlroy falters after strong start as Aaron Rai leads at Wentworth

Published

on

Rory McIlroy got off to a flying start in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth but his round unravelled to leave fellow major champion Aaron Rai as the joint first-round leader.

The Northern Irishman was five under through 10 holes and in the outright lead before some waywardness off the tee proved costly coming home, making three bogeys over his final six.

US PGA champion Rai, playing alongside the Masters winner and Open champion Ryan Fox in the marquee group which finished a combined 13 under par, was typically more solid.

He also had five birdies in his first 10 holes, with one bogey, and two more coming home saw him post a six-under 66, three better than McIlroy and two ahead of Fox.

McIlroy, who covered the course in 60 in Wednesday’s pro-am, is trying to reel in Patrick Reed to win a record-equalling eighth Race to Dubai title and he looked like he was intent on making a statement with the American out in the group in front.

Starting at the ninth, all but one of his first five birdies came from inside two and a half feet, a 20-footer at the par-five 12th the exception, with three in a row from the 16th from a combined five feet five inches.

He left an eagle attempt frustratingly short at the 17th and another for birdie at the second but from there things started to go awry.

McIlroy bogeyed the third and sixth, but a good recovery at the fourth saw him make birdie and he salvaged par at the seventh.

However, from deep rough after another poor drive at the eighth he hacked into the pond guarding the green and dropped his third shot of the day to finish with a three-under 69.

Rai drove into the same pond at the eighth but chipped up to save par. He was later joined on six under by Swede Joakim Lagergren, whose round contained an eagle at the 12th.

Reed had briefly held a share of the lead with a fifth birdie before he too fell foul of the 395-yard par-four eighth to finish in the group on four under, which also included Fox and Viktor Hovland.

“Started very strong, five-under through 10, and started hitting a few loose shots on the way in,” said McIlroy.

“It started to get a little tricky there at the end, the wind was gusty, but I played well. I certainly saw some improvements on the greens compared to last week.

“It felt like I could have been a couple better at least but I think it’s going to play pretty tricky this afternoon so 69 isn’t a bad score to start with.”

Reed, who is bidding to become only the second American after Collin Morikawa to win the Race to Dubai, said: “It would mean a lot. I’ve always prided myself as being an American that consistently comes over and shows support to this tour.

“It’s definitely in the back of my mind, but at the end of the day (I’ve got to) just go out there and take care of business each and every day.”

The afternoon starters fared much worse, with two-time major winner Jon Rahm already struggling to make the cut after five bogeys and a double.

His six-over round of 78 left him just one behind last man Marcel Siem, while playing partners Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood were slightly better as they both finished one over.

Who should I start for Week 2 Fantasy Football?

Published

on

The opening week of the 2026 NFL season is done and dusted, and fantasy football league managers are gearing up for Week 2. They’ll be looking to make roster moves that’ll either give them their second win of the campaign or get to .500.

Two Buffalo Bills wide receivers to watch in the upcoming week are D.J. Moore and Khalil Shakir. With that in mind, here’s which veteran wideout you should start in Week 2.

Should I start D.J. Moore or Khalil Shakir for Week 2 Fantasy Football?

In the offseason, the Buffalo Bills acquired D.J. Moore from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2026 second-round draft pick. The veteran wideout was fresh off his eighth year, amassing 50 receptions, 682 yards, and six touchdowns in 17 games catching passes from Caleb Williams.

Looking to predict NFL playoff Scenarios? Try our NFL Playoff Predictor for real-time simulations and stay ahead of the game!

Moore was phenomenal in his Bills debut, catching five passes for 100 yards and one touchdown. His football IQ was key in him scoring a 43-yard TD against the Houston Texans.

Khalil Shakir has spent his entire professional football career with the Bills. He entered Year 5 as the team’s WR2 behind the newly acquired Moore.

Shakir had a solid but unspectacular start to the season. He posted a stat line of four receptions, 50 receiving yards and no touchdowns.

While D.J. Moore and Khalil Shakir are talented players in their own right, Moore seems the better Week 2 start. As Josh Allen’s primary target, Moore is the most likely source of fantasy points in the Bills receiver room.

Moore is the clear WR1 and high-end option, while Shakir occupies a lower-ceiling supporting role. Furthermore, Moore’s ranking as a strong top-15/20 option makes him too tantalizing to ignore.

How to watch Buffalo Bills vs. Detroit Lions?

The Buffalo Bills continue their campaign against the Detroit Lions. Both teams will look to record their second win of the season.

With the game on Thursday, here’s what you need to know to watch it.

  • Date: Thursday, Sept. 17
  • Time: 8:15 p.m. ET
  • Venue: Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York
  • Livestream: Amazon Prime Video
