After a postponement provided a welcome break for their busy bullpen, the Toronto Blue Jays will return home Monday night to open a three-game series against the Houston Astros.

The Blue Jays and Chicago Cubs’ rubber match of a three-game series was postponed on Sunday because of inclement weather and rescheduled for Aug. 6.

Toronto finished a 4-1 road trip and will play the next 10 games at home before hitting the road until the All-Star break.

The postponement could benefit the Blue Jays’ bullpen that was taxed in the two games in Chicago. Kevin Gausman lasted only two innings in his start on Friday and that was followed on Saturday when starter Patrick Corbin lasted only 3 2/3 innings.

The Blue Jays wrapped up an 8-6 win on Saturday when closer Louis Varland entered with the bases loaded and pitched two innings to earn his 15th save.

Varland has pitched more than one inning 12 times — including three stints of two innings — in 37 games this season and has compensated by throwing less between assignments.

“I learned a lot from last year, probably overthrew a little bit outside of the game,” Varland said. “So, I made some adjustments here and there in pretty much all aspects. Less-is-more type of mentality, but still checking the boxes for what I need.”

The Blue Jays had not listed a starting pitcher for Monday as of Sunday night, but they were expected to go with right-hander Dylan Cease (4-3, 2.71 ERA), who had been scheduled to start on Sunday. He is 1-3 with a 3.35 ERA in eight career starts against Houston.

Right-hander Shane Bieber (2026 debut) was scheduled to make his first start of the season Monday after being on the 60-day injured list with elbow inflammation. He could start Tuesday instead. Bieber is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA in four career starts against Houston.

The Astros are scheduled to pitch righty Hunter Brown (1-0, 1.10) in the series opener. He is 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA in three career starts against Toronto.

Brown returned from the injured list to make his third start of the season on June 16 when he held the Detroit Tigers to one run, three hits and three walks while striking out seven over 5 2/3 innings in a no-decision. The Astros won 4-2.

Brown had not pitched since March 31 because of a right shoulder sprain.

“We’ve had a lot of guys fill in who have done a great job and other people step up, and it takes a full 40-man roster,” Brown said. “But now that I am back, hopefully, I can hit the ground running and keep it going. That’s the goal, that’s the plan. And we’re still in striking distance and everybody in this clubhouse knows it, so that’s where we want to be and just try and keep putting together wins.”

Brown settled in after his first two innings against the Tigers after showing signs of the layoff and reached 92 pitches for the outing.

“When he got to that 80-85 (pitch level), we started seeing him breathing harder, taking more time around the mound, so you could tell some fatigue was starting to set in,” Astros manager Joe Espada said. “But this guy competes, man. He’s a horse.”

The Astros completed a 4-2 homestand Sunday with a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Guardians and will open a seven-game trip in Toronto.

Houston is 17-11 since May 21 and Toronto is 16-12.

Fifa scraps plans to sell World Cup stake after boycott threat and widespread backlash

Published

on

Fifa has scrapped its plan to sell stakes in the World Cup and other tournaments to private investors, after widespread backlash and threats of a boycott.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino proposed the controversial plan in July, declaring that a vote would determine whether or not it would go ahead, but there was anger and concern from many voices in the footballing world.

European football’s governing body Uefa even confirmed a boycott of the World Cup and other Fifa competitions, saying its member nations would not take part if Infantino’s plan was voted through.

The Asian Football Confederation and Concacaf, which represents 41 nations from North and Central America and the Caribbean, backed Uefa in their stance.

Despite Fifa hitting back in a statement that insisted “nobody is selling football”, the sport’s world governing body ultimately backed down.

A statement from Infantino read: “The Fifa Forward Enterprise project was intended to provide a basis for further strengthening our Fifa Member Associations and our sport worldwide, especially in those countries where support is most needed.

“And more so, as we said from the outset, to do this only if a majority of the Fifa Member Associations were in support and always subject to a consultation process with them, the Fifa Council, the Confederations and wider stakeholders.

“Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place.

“Our purpose has always been – and will always be – to unite and improve. As a result, this proposal will not proceed.

“Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support.”

There has been a concerning update regarding a popular WWE star and their injury situation. The promotion is set for SummerSlam 2026 this weekend at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minnesota.

The Vision’s Bron Breakker and Austin Theory battled Dragon Lee and Je’Von Evans earlier this month on WWE RAW. The Vision emerged victorious, and Dragon Lee suffered a thumb injury during the match.

Speaking on NotSam Wrestling, Lee shared a concerning update about his injury. The popular star noted that if he required surgery, he could miss 3-4 months of action, but he was hoping that would not be the case.

“I don’t know how long I will be out, but I don’t want to get surgery because if I get surgery, I’ll be out for 3-4 months, and I don’t want that,” he said.

The veteran also shared that he was told that he could “probably wrestle” with the injury and was hoping that the promotion would let him do so.

“They told me with this injury I can probably wrestle. Hopefully they will let me wrestle,” he added. (H/T: Ringside News)

Dragon Lee has been appearing on both RAW and AAA in recent months for the company. The 31-year-old captured the World Tag Team Championships alongside AJ Styles last year. Styles retired from in-ring competition following his loss to Gunther at Royal Rumble 2026.

Dragon Lee comments on teaming up with AJ Styles in WWE

WWE RAW star Dragon Lee recently opened up about getting the opportunity to be in a tag team with AJ Styles.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet on the INSIGHT podcast, Lee stated that he was honored to work with Styles during his final run and that he was proud of himself.

“I feel honored to be part of his last matches, and even John Cena’s last match [event], I was part of that too. I feel like you know so many things that I’m proud of myself, you know, because if you’re not, if you don’t recognize yourself, who else will? You just look at the mirror and say, ‘You’re doing well, keep working. I’m proud of you, brother. Keep working.’ My family, that’s it, that’s all the energy I need.” said Lee [H/T: INSIGHT]

OH MY GOD???? Was that the greatest Styles Clash EVER?! 😂 AND STILL YOUR WORLD TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS: AJ Styles & Dragon Lee!

It will be interesting to see what WWE has planned for Dragon Lee moving forward.
