Canada’s Jonah Tong ‘in play’ to pitch for Mets vs. Marlins

Published

on

One of Canada’s top young pitchers could be in position to return to the majors this weekend.

New York Mets right-hander Jonah Tong was scratched from his start at triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. Manager Carlos Mendoza said the move was made to keep the Markham, Ont., native “in play” for a start in the team’s upcoming series against the Miami Marlins.

“There’s a chance that he plays a part in the Miami series for us,” Mendoza said. “But we gotta get through today. We gotta get through tomorrow, and then we’ll go from there.

“We just want to keep him in play in case there’s a need here.”

Tong shot up New York’s minor-league affiliates in 2025, striking out 179 batters in 113.2 innings split between double-A Binghamton and triple-A Syracuse. Along with his monster punchout numbers, Tong carried a 1.43 ERA in the minors and was named the MiLB pitcher of the year.

His strong showing earned him a late-August recall to the Mets. And while Tong battled inconsistency against major-league hitters, he still struck out 22 in 18.2 innings and made five starts for the Mets down the stretch.

The 22-year-old was optioned back to triple-A to begin the 2026 season, where he has been tasked with improving some of his secondary offerings.

So far, the results haven’t quite been as solid as they were in 2025. Over nine starts, Tong owns a 5.68 ERA, but he has still racked up 55 strikeouts in 38 innings.

Amid the disappointing start to their season, the Mets have lost a number of players to the injured list. That includes starters Clay Holmes and Kodai Senga, creating a need that Tong may be tabbed to fill.

“We don’t know,” Mendoza said when asked if Tong would be brought back to pitch as a starter. “It depends on the way we finish the game today and where we’re at, pitching-wise. It’s kind of a day-to-day, but in the meantime, he’s available.”

New York wraps up its series against the Washington Nationals on Thursday before heading to Miami for a weekend set with the Marlins

Ben Simmons swaps NBA hardwood for open seas, wins fishing championship

Published

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

Ben Simmons finally captured a championship — just not in the sport that defined most of his professional career. This past Sunday, the former NBA player won the Sport Fishing Championship (SFC) Blue Marlin Open in the Bahamas.

Simmons competed as an angler for the South Florida Sails, a club he co-owns.

Simmons said his investment in sport fishing was driven by a longtime passion for the sport. “I have always believed that investing in what you love means you have a responsibility to help move it forward,” Simmons, who last appeared in an NBA game during his lone season with the Los Angeles Clippers, said.

“Sport fishing has given me incredible experiences, and SFC is creating a platform that treats offshore fishing like the elite sport it is.”

Selected No. 1 overall by Philadelphia in the 2016 NBA Draft, Simmons was traded to Brooklyn in February 2022. He missed the entire 2021-22 season because of a contract dispute with the Sixers and a herniated disk coming to light after arriving with the Nets. Simmons later underwent back surgery following Brooklyn’s playoff exit.

Since becoming an NBA free agent following the 2024-25 season, Simmons appears to have shifted his focus from basketball to competitive fishing.

Simmons’ ownership stake in the Sails was announced last December. South Florida’s official SFC website lists the three-time NBA All-Star as the franchise’s controlling owner.

South Florida opened the event strong, aided by angler Alex Stanley’s blue marlin release worth 450 points.

Stanley added another blue marlin release later in the day, helping the Sails close Day 1 at the top of the standings.

South Florida cruised to the title after a dominant Saturday created an intimidating lead entering Sunday’s final day. The Sails closed the event with 2,925 points, nearly 1,500 more than the New Jersey Sea Birds.

Simmons’ victory came less than a year after fellow professional athlete Scottie Scheffler saw his Texas Lone Stars win the Zane Grey Championship Playoffs. Scheffler is a two-time Masters champion.

Aston Villa end decades long wait for major trophy with Europa League victory

Published

on

Aston Villa ended their 30-year wait for a trophy as they strolled to an emphatic 3-0 victory over Freiburg in the Europa League final in Istanbul.

After falling short in the Conference League semi-finals and Champions League last-eight over recent times, Unai Emery brought European success back to Villa Park at the third time of asking.

The Prince of Wales, 43, was in attendance to witness Villa’s first European final since he was born, and watched his beloved side win their first silverware since the League Cup in 1996.

Villa’s quality shone through with a pair of unstoppable strikes at the end of the first half from Youri Tielemans and Emiliano Buendia.

Villa started to flex their muscles and Morgan Rogers added a third which sparked jubilant scenes at the final whistle.

They made their intentions known from the outset and it took just two minutes for them to make their mark when Rogers unleashed an effort which forced a first save from Noah Atubolu.

Freiburg have been deadly from set pieces this season and almost made Villa pay from another when a ball into the box bounced favourably for Nicolas Hofler, but he dragged an effort wide.

And Emiliano Martinez, who seemed fine after a slight injury scare in the warm-up, was required to stop exciting talent Johan Manzambi from range.

All the focus was on Freiburg’s danger from dead balls, but the Premier League side are capable themselves, and they broke the deadlock four minutes before the break courtesy of a well-worked set piece.

The first corner of the game fell to Villa who played short to Rogers and he crossed it to the on-rushing Tielemans, who arrived in the area and fired a spectacular volley past Atubolu.

Villa then doubled their advantage seconds before the interval when Buendia had the space of Besiktas Park to tee up and bend a beautiful strike into the top-left corner from the edge of the box.

Villa’s confidence was up and Buendia tried a cheeky chip moments after the restart which Atubolu was alert to.

Villa did not rest on their laurels and had a third in the 58th minute; this time Buendia turned creator when he sent in a cross which deflected nicely into the path of Rogers, who slid home from two yards out.

John McGinn was then denied by Atubolu after Amadou Onana hit the post, which mattered little as Villa won their first European trophy since winning the European Cup 44 years ago.

Julio Cesar Chavez asked where he ranks Canelo amongst the greatest Mexican fighters of all time

Published

on

Whilst appreciated as the recent ‘face of boxing’ and global superstar, Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez’s position amongst the Mexican greats is more up for debate. Now, national legend Julio Cesar Chavez has had his say on where Alvarez sits amongst his country’s many boxing icons.

Canelo’s supporters point to his world titles across four weight classes, longevity at the elite level, and victories over names such as Gennadiy Golovkin, Miguel Cotto and Sergey Kovalev as evidence he belongs among Mexico’s greatest ever fighters.

Critics may argue that controversial scorecards, selective matchmaking claims and defeats to Floyd Mayweather, Dmitry Bivol and Terence Crawford leave him below iconic Mexican figures like Chavez and Salvador Sanchez in all-time discussions.

Chavez, who is often recognised as the nation’s best, told Luis Parra that he believes Canelo has earned his position amongst the country’s ‘top 10’.

“Not including me? Well, look, Mexico has been so great. [Salvador] Sánchez, [Rubén] Olivares, [José] ’Mantequilla’ Nápoles, [Marco Antonio] Barrera, [Erik] Morales, Canelo, [Humberto] ‘Chiquita’ Gonzalez, Ricardo ‘Finito’ López.”

“Yes, [Canelo belongs in the top 10], of course, man.”

Canelo will seek to further enhance his legacy when he attempts to regain the super-middleweight throne later this year, scheduled to challenge Christian Mbilli for the WBC crown on Saturday, September 12.

How to get Shadow Crystal in Sailor Piece

Published

on

Sailor Piece is an action-adventure experience where players can explore different islands, defeat powerful enemies, and unlock stronger combat styles to progress further in the game. One of the most significant bosses currently available in the game is the Shadow Monarch. This boss drops several valuable materials, including the highly sought-after Shadow Crystal, which is required to obtain the Shadow Monarch sword.

This guide covers everything you need to know about the Shadow Crystal in Sailor Piece, including how to obtain it, its drop rate, and its main uses in the game.

The Shadow Crystal is a rare material that can be obtained by defeating the Shadow Monarch boss in the Double Dungeons. This item has an extremely low drop rate of around 0.5% to 1%, making it one of the rarest drops available from the boss. Because of this, players may need to spend several hours farming before finally obtaining one.

To access this game mode, you will first need to unlock the Dungeon Island by completing the Dungeon Discovery. You can spawn the Double Dungeons using Dungeon Keys, which are obtained from high-level boss drops. Note that greater difficulties increase your chances of getting better rewards, including the Shadow Crystal.

For the best farming efficiency, it is recommended to select Hard or Extreme difficulty if your build is strong enough to clear enemies quickly. Mid-game and late-game players with serious damage builds and good accessories will have a much easier time farming the Shadow Monarch repeatedly. You should also equip titles and accessories that improve your Luck stats to slightly increase your chances of getting the Shadow Crystal.

If farming feels too time-consuming, you can also try trading with other players to obtain the Shadow Crystal directly. You can also try to get it using the Pity System (25).

What is the use of the Shadow Crystal in Sailor Piece?

The Shadow Crystal is one of the core materials required to obtain the Shadow Monarch sword, which is currently considered one of the strongest meta swords in Sailor Piece and one of the best swords available in Sea 1.

To craft or purchase the Shadow Monarch sword, players will need several rare materials, including the Solo Hunter Sword, King of Shadows Title, Monarch Cores, Monarch Essence, Kamish Daggers, and the Shadow Crystal itself. Since the Shadow Crystal has one of the lowest drop rates among all Shadow Monarch boss rewards, it is often viewed as one of the hardest materials to obtain for the weapon.
