Harry Kane has been crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner, capping off an outstanding season for Bayern Munich and England. The England captain claimed football’s most prestigious individual award following a remarkable campaign that showcased his goalscoring ability, consistency and leadership.

Kane’s victory marks a historic moment for English football, as he becomes the first English player to win the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. The Bayern Munich striker was recognised for his exceptional performances at both club and international level throughout the 2025/26 season.

The 33-year-old enjoyed a prolific campaign with Bayern Munich, scoring 61 goals in 51 appearances across all competitions. His contribution played a significant role in Bayern’s domestic league and cup double, further strengthening his position among the leading players in world football.

Kane also delivered impressive performances for England, captaining the national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He scored six goals during the tournament as England reached the semi-finals, adding another major achievement to an already outstanding season.

His Ballon d’Or triumph comes after years of consistently performing at the highest level, both in the Premier League and Bundesliga. The award represents a major individual milestone for Kane, who has continued to establish himself as one of the most accomplished strikers of his generation.

The 2026 ceremony was held at the London Palladium on October 26, marking the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or. Kane’s victory also brought the prestigious award back to England for the first time in 25 years.

With the Ballon d’Or now added to his collection of achievements, Kane has further cemented his place among football’s elite players.

Flemington jump-out sets up 2026 Coolmore Stud Stakes rivals

FLEMINGTON 12 9 2026 RACE 4 PARADOXIUM 12 scaled 1
FLEMINGTON 12 9 2026 RACE 4 PARADOXIUM 12 scaled 1

While the Victoria Derby garners significant attention, the sprint race for three-year-olds is shaping up as one of the most keenly awaited events of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.

The Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington this Saturday is poised to bring together a formidable collection of colts and fillies aiming to build their reputations for a potential career at stud.

A jump-out involving seven horses at Flemington on Friday provided an indication of some of the runners set to compete in Saturday’s 1200m dash down the famous Flemington straight.

Participants in the 800m jump-out included The Next Episode, Paradoxium, St Gotthard, Natural Fling, and Under Focus, with Paradoxium comfortably crossing the line ahead of his rivals.

Champion trainer Chris Waller, whose colt St Gotthard finished in third place, emphasized that the session was about gaining experience.

“Experience, that is what it was all about,” Waller stated. “St Gotthard is a relatively lightly raced horse. It was a really good run in the Golden Rose and since then he’s been set for this race.”

“He’s had a quiet trial in Sydney and then the jump-out and it’s all systems go for the big one next week. This is the real pinnacle for a three-year-old colt that hopefully can really stamp themselves as a stallion, and that is what the Coolmore team is all about. He started his two-year-old career late and made an impact straight away. He’s come back really well at three and he’s ready to peak here on Derby Day.”

Waller has an impressive record in the Coolmore Stud Stakes, having secured the win on six occasions, with Switzerland being his most recent triumph in 2024.

From the outset, Waller has been struck by St Gotthard’s exceptional quality.

“He’s got speed and talent, and James McDonald has been impressed with him right from day one,” Waller commented. “That tells me he’s got the ability and it’s just about bringing it all together and making sure he’s ready to peak.”

Ciaron Maher, aiming for his first Coolmore Stud Stakes victory, watched as The Next Episode finished fifth, in a group, behind the dominant winner Paradoxium.

The Next Episode has been specifically targeted for this Group 1 sprint since his victory at the Gold Coast in May, and followed this with a first-up win in the Danehill Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on October 3.

Maher, in line with Waller, brought The Next Episode to Flemington to enhance its experience ahead of next Saturday’s race.

“It’s been his aim all the way along,” Maher said. “He was great here the other day and he had a look down the straight before that. It’s a month between runs and he had a nice (on) bridle hit out, and he should present pretty close to spot on.”

‘Stand near a powerful fan’: India coach’s unique advice to players ahead of Wellington Test | Cricket News

'Stand near a powerful fan': India coach's unique advice to players ahead of Wellington Test
Morkel’s advice to the players is to “Stand near a powerful fan to counter the speedy wind”

The wind at Wellington’s Basin Reserve can change direction without warning, making it a challenging venue for visiting teams. India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel has offered a simple piece of advice to the Test specialists yet to arrive in New Zealand: prepare to deal with the strong winds before stepping onto the field.India will play a two-match Test series against New Zealand after the ongoing T20I and ODI series. The first Test is scheduled to begin at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on November 18.Morkel’s advice to the players is to “Stand near a powerful fan to counter the speedy wind”, which has troubled visiting teams at the venue for years.“We’ve spoken about Wellington, especially before the start of the tour, and we’ve planted those seeds. I spoke to some of the boys who were back in India last night, and they asked what the conditions are like. I said, ‘Make sure you get a very strong fan at home. When you walk into the fan that is going to be your preparation’,” Morkel said ahead of India’s third T20 International. The Indian team is currently in Wellington, New Zealand’s capital, which is also known as “Windy Wellington”. Wind speeds reached 120 kmph on Monday.Although the third T20I against the Black Caps is scheduled for Tuesday, Morkel and head coach Gautam Gambhir are already looking ahead to the challenges the team could face in the Test series.“This wind is a different beast. I was in the hotel this morning and the whole building was sort of shaking. So I think it’s going to be a new sort of thing that we add to our books for the guys to get used to and accustomed to with a quick turnaround,” Morkel said.He added that India would need to face the conditions without making excuses, as the wind could affect several aspects of the game, including a batter’s stance and position at the crease.“For us, it is looking forward to that challenge and taking it head-on and not really making excuses. This wind can impact a lot of things, it can impact batting, your stance, your crease, it can impact many factors,” Morkel said. The former South Africa fast bowler has experienced the conditions at the Basin Reserve during his playing career. He said adjusting to the wind in just a few days of training was difficult, making it important for players to approach the challenge with the right mindset.“When I toured here with South Africa, we had certain ways that we went about trying to get used to it. I don’t think you can ever get used to it in the space of two, three, or four days. So it comes down to how you’re going to frame the whole situation: you’re either going to see it as a challenge, or you’re going to see it as a negative and let it down.“Hopefully, we can get those guys in a mental space where they look forward to that challenge. At the end of the day, you need somebody to put their hand up and bowl into the wind, because we can’t have four guys bowling off the wind.”New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell is also aware of the problems the conditions can create for visiting teams. He said the hosts would look to make the most of any discomfort their opponents experience.Bracewell pointed out that wind behaves differently at enclosed stadiums, where it can swirl and change direction, compared with more open grounds such as the Basin Reserve.“It is interesting. At closed stadiums, it swirls around a bit, so it’s probably not as consistent as it is when you play in a slightly more open field like the Basin. We had one game here where the cameras got turned off from one end because it was so windy,” Bracewell said. However, he also sees dealing with different conditions as an important part of international cricket, where teams must adapt to the challenges they encounter around the world.“So that’s the joy of playing here is you get faced with different conditions, and that’s the great thing about international cricket. You go all around the world and have to deal with different things.“So it swirls a bit in the stadium, so it’s not necessarily that there’s going to be one end that perhaps if we’re playing in an open sort of stadium that you could target.

Unfazed Hughes burns former team as Wild hand Canucks another loss

Published

on

quinn

VANCOUVER — Quinn Hughes had listened to about 33 minutes of near-constant boos and jeers.

He heard an energized crowd at Rogers Arena break out into various chants: Quinn, you suck; He’s not signing; Quit-ter.

He watched as the jumbotron highlighted several disgruntled fans in retrofitted Hughes jerseys, letting the former captain know exactly where he stands with the Vancouver Canucks faithful after his departure last December.

By the 34th minute of that, Hughes decided, presumably, that he had enough.

Unfazed by the hostility around him, the Minnesota Wild defenceman calmly corralled a rebound in front of goaltender Leevi Merilainen, potting potentially the easiest and most memorable goal of his career — and his 500th career point — and dealing the death blow to the Canucks.

Hughes got the Brady Tkachuk treatment. Unlike Tkachuk, it was Hughes who got the last laugh against his former team.

“I wasn’t thinking about it like that. I just wanted to get a win,” Hughes said post-game about scoring his milestone goal where it all got started. “I think just seeing those fans and being able to play here again is just pretty cool for me.”

It helps, of course, that his team got the win and Hughes finished with the game-winning goal, an assist and first-star honours — no wonder it was easy to let the boos roll off his back.

There was some acclaim scattered amongst the antagonists. His tribute during the first TV timeout was met with a mixed bag of reactions: some leers, some cheers and a fair few standing ovations.

But outside of the minute-long homage, favour for the 27-year-old was few and far between.

“Very passionate fanbase,” Hughes said. “I was here for six and a half years, tried my best, and to see, you know, (I) got some cheers there. That was cool for me.

“I tried to be very present in the moment. … I wanted to win this game and wanted to play well. So that’s what I was thinking about.”

Hughes looked unfazed, even as fans diligently booed each time he touched the puck.

“He handled it well. He played great,” said Wild goalie Calvin Pickard, who picked up his first win of the season with 32 saves on 34 shots. “I can’t imagine it’s easy in a moment like that for him. But he thrives. He’s great every night. He’s so fun to watch. I’m just so lucky to be on his side.”

Under any other circumstance, Hughes would probably be remembered as one of the greatest players the Canucks had ever seen. Throughout his tenure, he rewrote almost every franchise record, won his first Norris Trophy and developed into a game-changing defenceman amongst the upper echelon in the league.

And 10 months is certainly long enough to build up some scar tissue with a fanbase that is, by Hughes’ own admission, incredibly passionate.

But as the Canucks stumble through the early days of a tear-it-all-down rebuild while Hughes embarks on a very real opportunity to win a Stanley Cup with the Wild, the wounds are clearly still fresh.

“We all knew it was coming,” Canucks forward Brock Boeser told reporters. “(The fans) definitely had energy tonight.”

The Canucks did too, at least for the first 20 minutes.

Vancouver came out of the gates swinging in the opening frame and clearly fed on the zip of a crowd that has had little to cheer for this season. The Canucks were making plays, challenging Pickard and forcing turnovers, looking vastly different from the team that limped to a 5-2 loss against Detroit on Thursday. Even when Maxim Shabanov broke the ice in the 18th minute off a back-door pass, the game still felt firmly in reach.

But the Canucks unravelled in the second and spent far too much time on the penalty kill. Goals from Hughes and Bobby Brink made it 3-0 before Kirill Kaprizov took a stretch pass from Hughes, froze nearly every Canuck skater on the ice, and scored a goal so filthy that Merilainen will be seeing it in his nightmares for weeks to come.

“We keep talking about it, like, we do it for a period. Second period, we stop doing it. I don’t know why,” Boeser said. “You can kind of see the ice tilt in their favour and they get the momentum. We need to find a way to respond.”

The Canucks are now losers of 10 straight. The season is still in its infancy, and yet, Vancouver appears to be pulling way ahead in the race to the bottom.

No other team has lost as many games as the Canucks — only the Chicago Blackhawks come remotely close with their eight beatings.

“We’re searching for answers. It’s concerning,” defeated Canucks head coach Manny Malhotra said to reporters. “We have a good period. We have an understanding as to why we have a good period. And then as soon as we come off of the things we discuss — being physical, being aggressive, winning puck battles — and we allow a transition team to come to life, they did what we expected them to do.”

To an extent, Hughes also did what we expected him to do, and what he did through 459 games as a Canuck: He took control of the game and delivered his team the win. At the expense of his former team and in spite of the boos.

As the Wild head down to Utah in the hopes of consolidating their spot atop the Central Division, Vancouver will continue to navigate its reality in the basement of the NHL, in the hopes that one day another elite, franchise-altering player will find himself in Canucks colours.

Because it’s not Hughes anymore, which he reminded Vancouver of on Sunday night.

PARIVISION, Team Spirit and Team Yandex remained unbeaten in round-robin play Sunday at the PARI Universe tournament as each team earned 2-0 sweeps.

OG joined them in the winner’s circle.

The $250,000, 10-team Dota 2 event is starting with a round-robin group stage, with all matches best-of-three. The top four teams in each group move on to the double-elimination playoffs, with the last-place team in each group eliminated.

The playoffs also will feature best-of-three matches until the best-of-five grand final on Nov. 1. The championship team will receive $45,000 for the club, $80,000 for the players.

Yandex took care of 1w, Spirit downed Astra Invicta and PARIVISION controlled BetBoom Team, as each squad improved to 3-0 in matches and 6-0 in games.

Yandex won in 34 minutes on Radiant and in 24 minutes on Dire, as Ammar “ATF” Al-Assaf of Jordan posted a 18-5-25 kill-death-assist ratio.

Bohdan “Batyuk” Batiuk of Ukraine had a KDA of 18-5-27 as Spirit won in 28 minutes on Dire and 55 minutes on Radiant.

PARIVISION swept for wins in 24 minutes and 37 minutes, both on Radiant. Alan “Satanic” Gallyhamov of Russia led his team in kills on both maps, totaling 18 to go along with two deaths and 15 assists.

OG went three maps but won 2-1 over Liquid, advancing their record to 2-1 (4-3 in games). OG wrapped a 48-minute win on Radiant and 67-minute win on Dire around a 33-minute loss on Dire.

John “Natsumi” Vargas of the Philippines grabbed 12 kills in the first game to spark OG, finishing with 22 for the match. Valery “SSS” Lazarev of Russia added 16 kills in Game 3 to get OG across the finish line.

Liquid fell to 1-2 (3-4 games) while Astra is 1-3 (3-6). 1w and BetBoom have failed to notch a victory and are close to elimination with one more day of matches left.

Sebastian Fundora’s latest opponent sums up Jaron Ennis’ chances of beating him: “It’s not normal”

Published

on

Ermal Hadribeaj Sebastian Fundora and Jaron Ennis

Ermal Hadribeaj Sebastian Fundora and Jaron Ennis

Coming off a strong performance against Sebastian Fundora last weekend, Ermal Hadribeaj has considered how the WBC champion might fare against Jaron Ennis.

The super-welterweight contender entered his maiden world title shot against Fundora, who ultimately stopped his mandatory challenger in the final second of round 12.

Prior to the finish, though, the ‘Towering Inferno’ had been made to work harder than expected as Hadribeaj found repeated success on the inside.

That he was even able to get past the American’s 80-inch reach came as a surprise to many, while Fundora would argue that he was happy to trade leather at close quarters.

Either way, his latest performance has inspired some to suggest that, against Ennis, the 28-year-old is unlikely to get away with adopting the same approach.

This is partly due to the effectiveness of Hadribeaj’s raiding strategy, as the 32-year-old southpaw would often bring his feet into range, initiate a clinch and work his way around the long limbs of Fundora.

Hadribeaj, however, has argued that Boots may not enjoy the same success by employing such tactics, telling former two-time world champion Shawn Porter that the American cannot rely solely on his speed advantage.

“I don’t think [Ennis] is going to be able to fight the way I [did against] Fundora. When you go in the ring with Fundora, you realise something that is not normal.

“So if [Ennis is] going to [try and] capitalise on his quick movement, maybe it’s not going to work with Fundora.

“With [Fundora’s] height, everything he does works.”

Before an undisputed encounter with Fundora can materialise, Ennis must first defeat IBF champion Josh Kelly in a three-belt unification match that is expected to take place in January.

Galway Senior Hurling Final Between Tommy Larkins and Loughrea

Published

on

IMG 5819

The stage is officially set for an enthralling showdown in the county club championship as Pearse Stadium prepares to host the Galway Senior Hurling Championship (SHC) final for the second consecutive year. Scheduled for Sunday week, November 1, at 3:00 PM, the premier decider will be broadcast live on TG4, bringing the action to hurling fans across the country.

While Kenny Park in Athenry is widely regarded as the spiritual heartland of Galway hurling—having staged the Tom Callanan Cup decider two years ago—this year’s blockbuster pairing will once again light up Salthill.

The Path to the Final: A Historic Pairing

The 2026 decider features a wonderfully novel pairing as Tommy Larkins prepare to lock horns with Loughrea. Both sides earned their places in the final following hard-fought, contrasting semi-final victories:

  • Tommy Larkins: Are celebrating a monumental milestone, advancing to their first SHC final in a remarkable 55 years. They booked their ticket to Salthill following an epic, nerve-wracking 2-26 to 1-27 victory over Clarinbridge after extra-time last Saturday.
  • Loughrea: Kept their ambitious three-in-a-row championship dreams alive by finishing with a strong flourish to overcome Craughwell 0-20 to 0-15 in Sunday’s second semi-final.

A Festival of County Hurling Finals

The senior showpiece is part of a massive weekend of club hurling action across Galway, featuring several key finals and curtain-raisers:

  • Sunday, November 1:
    • ‘Premier’ JHC Final: Abbeyknockmoy vs. Sylane at 1:00 PM (preceding the senior final).
  • Saturday, October 31 (at Kenny Park):
    • IHC Final: Mullagh and Kilconieron square off at 3:30 PM.
    • JHC ‘D’ Decider: Loughrea and Kiltormer serve as the curtain-raiser at 1:30 PM.

With Tommy Larkins looking to end a half-century wait for senior glory, and Loughrea driving hard to protect their championship dynasty, November 1 promises to deliver an unforgettable afternoon of top-tier club hurling at Pearse Stadium.

Man City’s next five fixtures compared to Arsenal after Aston Villa loss

Manchester City and Arsenal are on the same points total in the Premier League table after defeat for Enzo Maresca’s side

Manchester City lost their lead at the top of the Premier League after losing to Aston Villa before Arsenal beat Everton. Nicolas Jackson strikes either side of Erling Haaland’s thirteenth goal of the season saw Enzo Maresca’s side lose for the first time in league action.

Just a few hours on from that defeat at Villa Park, the Gunners strode to victory at Emirates Stadium and joined City on 21 points. Having won several games by a considerable margin, City stayed top on goal difference but the Premier League champions are right on their tail.

City may have a chance to put some breathing room between the two again when they make the trip to Emirates Stadium in late November. Before then, both teams have some challenging fixtures with an international break also on the calendar.

With all of that being said, MEN Sport has compared the upcoming five league fixtures for both teams after differing results on Saturday.

Verdict: City’s next clash is at home to Brighton and could be quite the challenge considering Arsenal have already fallen to Fabian Hurzeler’s side. A trip to Nottingham Forest follows that with three points needed as Arteta and Co. triumphed at the City Ground earlier this month.

Fulham visit Etihad Stadium following the domestic pause with the Cottagers still languishing in the bottom half despite back-to-back wins. Just over a week on from that is the big game against Arsenal and the chance to make a big statement in the title race.

The first set of midweek fixtures follows that with City back on home soil as Leeds United make the trip. That will almost certainly be another difficult game.

Manchester City also face Brighton (Oct 28) in the Carabao Cup alongside RB Leipzig (Nov 4) and Napoli (Nov 24) in the Champions League.

Arsenal’s next five fixtures

Liverpool (A) – Nov 1

Hull City (H) – Nov 7

Newcastle United (A) – Nov 21

Manchester City (H) – Nov 29

Brentford (A) – Dec 2

Verdict: Arsenal’s next five league fixtures appear harder on paper with a trip to Liverpool up first. City winning there already may put even more pressure on Arteta’s side to also claim a positive result.

The easiest opponent of both over the next month or so comes next with newly-promoted Hull City in town, which makes a victory vital. A feisty clash under the lights at St James’ Park comes after that with it still a challenging fixture despite their poor recent form.

Arsenal will then fancy their chances to beat City at Emirates Stadium, having already bested them at a neutral venue in the last few months. The following Wednesday is a quick trip across London with Brentford as their opponents.

Arsenal also face Fleetwood Town (Oct 27) in the Carabao Cup alongside Slavia Prague (Nov 4) and Borussia Dortmund (Nov 24) in the Champions League.
