How can PBKS qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs after six-wicket loss to MI in Dharamsala?

Published

on

Punjab Kings (PBKS) lost to Mumbai Indians (MI) by six wickets in the IPL 2026 match at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala on Thursday, May 14. With that, the Shreyas Iyer-led side registered their fifth consecutive defeat in IPL 2026.

Before losing to MI, they also suffered defeats against Delhi Capitals (DC), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Rajasthan Royals (RR). It’s worth mentioning that they failed to defend 200 again in Dharamsala after a three-wicket defeat to the Capitals this season.

Having said that, the Punjab-based franchise have six wins in 12 games and are placed fourth in the points table. They have 13 points, including a shared point with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after a rain-abandoned fixture. With a couple of upcoming games against defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), they can reach a maximum of 17 points if they win both their games.

PBKS are now in a tricky situation because even two wins cannot guarantee them a place in the top four ahead of the knockout matches. This is because five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) have identical 12 points from 11 matches, which allows both teams to reach a maximum of 18 points. In such a scenario, they need results to go in their favour.

Meanwhile, table toppers RCB and second-placed GT share 16 points apiece after 12 matches. The duo can finish with a maximum of 20 points apiece. Meanwhile, SRH are third with 14 points in 12 games. They can end up with 18 points ahead of the playoffs.
