Adrian Bott harbours hopes that the decision to adopt a patient strategy with comeback galloper Revengeance will result in a lucrative spring reward, beginning with his reappearance in the San Domenico Stakes at Rosehill.

The colt was sidelined from the autumn carnival after undergoing surgery to remove bone chips from a knee, an injury sustained after his victory in the Golden Gift (1100m) in November.

He has been given a gradual build-up to his return to racing. The stable had considered kicking him off in the Rosebud (1100m) a fortnight ago but ultimately decided to save him for Saturday’s assignment.

“We trialled instead. He’d had a long time off and I didn’t want to rush him back,” Bott said.

“Plus he would have had to carry a bit of weight with his Golden Gift win. He will be better suited in the San Domenico.”

Revengeance has been prepared for his comeback with three trials, and his most recent win in a trial impressed Bott.

However, the Tulloch Lodge horseman has cautioned punters that the three-year-old colt will be better suited over distances greater than 1100m as he progresses towards the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) next month.

“He looks fantastic. He’s come back really well and he is stretching out nicely,” he said.

“It might be a bit short for him. I think he’ll be a lovely horse as he gets out to 1400 and 1600 metres.”

Revengeance has drawn barrier six in an eight-horse field and is set to follow the traditional route to the Golden Rose (1400m) via the Run To The Rose (1200m) on September 12.

All going well, connections are also keen for the horse to head to Melbourne, where races such as the Caulfield Guineas (1600m) will be considered.

Tulloch Lodge has achieved success in two of the past four renewals of the San Domenico Stakes, with In The Congo (2021) and Storm Boy (2024) being their winners.

MANILA, Philippines — Jason Kidd was honored to experience a basketball-passionate country like the Philippines as he joined fellow NBA point guard Tony Parker and WNBA legend Lauren Jackson in the launch of NBA House on Saturday at One Ayala in Makati.

Despite the inclement weather, Filipinos arrived at the opening of NBA House as early as 10 a.m. and stayed until the celebrity exhibition game coached by Kidd and Parker.

“The energy. The love of basketball, as much as we love it, you could see the Filipinos love the game of basketball and can play the game at a very high level so we’re very excited to be here,” said Kidd.

Parker and Jackson also took time to hold a brief basketball clinic for the young Filipino kids.

Filipino tennis ace Alex Eala and NBA champion Jordan Clarkson of the New York Knicks also gave a surprise video greeting to kick off the event.

Kidd, a 10-time All-Star and second all-time in assists with 12,091, shared that his most memorable moments in the NBA were getting drafted, when he realized his dream of making it to the league, and winning a championship with the Dallas Mavericks.

Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki overcame the Miami Heat, featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, in the 2011 Finals.

The Hall of Famer attributed his success to Gary Payton, who became his mentor.

“If you have great teammates who want to score the ball, my job is easy. But I think being able to listen to the guys who played the game before me,” said Kidd. “So my mentor was Gary Payton, being able to listen to him, watch him because he played at the highest level, that was my dream was to be able to get to that level and so being able to have great people around me, I listened and then I tried to apply and I worked at it and I got lucky.”

After his storied career as a player, Kidd went into coaching, working with Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks before winning the 2020 NBA bubble championship as an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, led by James and Anthony Davis.

His most recent coaching stint was with the Mavericks, where he steered Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving to the 2024 NBA Finals before falling to the Boston Celtics.

Overhauling the midfield was always going to be Manchester United’s priority in the summer window, but that doesn’t mean it was the only objective on the transfer to-do list.

Away from the midfield arrivals, the only other new name on the United teamsheet at the MKM Stadium last weekend was back-up goalkeeper Karl Darlow and, barring sudden twists, the same will be true at Old Trafford on Sunday.

There will be fewer than 55 hours remaining of the summer transfer window when United kick off against Ipswich this weekend, and failure to add to the squad before the 11pm deadline on Tuesday will not be a good look.

In isolation, the signings of Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba look like solid business. United’s midfield is far better equipped to deal with the strain of trying to compete across four fronts than it was when the window opened, but when the context of those additions is taken into account, can club chiefs really consider this a successful window so far?

Baleba made his desire to join United clear last summer, with Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler even admitting the admiring glance from United had played a part in the Cameroon international’s dip in form last season. If a fee could have been agreed between the two sides in 2025 then the move would have happened, so Baleba’s move this summer wasn’t a particularly difficult deal to do once the two clubs settled on a price.

While the cheapest of the three midfield signings, Tielemans arguably represents the best piece of business United have done this year. The Belgium international adds experience, nous and quality to United’s squad, but the fact United managed to keep their talks with Aston Villa under wraps until the day before the transfer was announced tells you how difficult a deal it was to do. A £35m release clause meant that as soon as Tielemans said yes, the move was done.

Santos was the first new face through the door at Old Trafford this summer. “Can we pay £50m for the player who doesn’t get into your starting XI?” is a good starting point if you’re looking for some smooth negotiations.

The jury is of course still out on United’s new additions, but on the face of it, rebuilding a midfield at a cost of £155m in the current market should be commended.

But with just a few days left of the summer transfer window, more is needed if Carrick is to build on the third-place finish secured last season.

United are in the market for a left-back, yet the move for a back-up to Benjamin Sesko that is so plainly needed shows no signs of materialising.

The clock is ticking and United still have work to do.
