MLB roundup: Cubs spoil Tarik Skubal’s Dodgers’ debut

Nico Hoerner singled and homered while Pete Crow-Armstrong contributed two hits, an RBI and a run for the Cubs, who won the opener of the three-game series 10-5 on Monday. Starter Javier Assad gave up one run and four hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two. Ryan Rolison (6-1) retired all three batters he faced.
Skubal (7-6), the reigning two-time AL Cy Young Award winner who was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on Saturday, pitched six innings and allowed two runs on four hits. He walked two and struck out six. Kyle Tucker homered for the Dodgers, who have lost a season-high five in a row.

Brewers 4, Pirates 2
Jackson Chourio and Andrew Vaughn homered to lead host Milwaukee to a win over Pittsburgh.
Chourio went 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Brewers, who reached 70 wins faster than any season in franchise history. The Brewers also became the first major league team to record 70 wins this year. Milwaukee starter Logan Henderson (6-1) gave up two runs and four hits in six innings.
Jacob Gonzalez and Endy Rodriguez homered for the Pirates, who had won two of their previous three. Pittsburgh starter Jared Jones (2-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in four innings.
Orioles 3, Angels 1
Cade Povich pitched six shutout innings in his first major league game in nearly three months as Baltimore topped visiting Los Angeles in the series opener.
Pinch hitter Tyler O’Neill homered and Pete Alonso delivered a two-run single for the Orioles, who had been shutout victims in their two previous games and won despite collecting only four hits. Povich limited the Angels to seven hits while striking out seven.
It was a strong homecoming for Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez, but he was saddled with the loss despite logging seven innings. The right-hander, a former highly regarded Orioles prospect, gave up two runs and three hits while striking out six. Vaughn Grissom had the lone RBI for the Angels.
Braves 4, Marlins 2
Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley each hit a home run and Grant Holmes threw six-plus scoreless innings to help Atlanta beat visiting Miami for its sixth straight victory.
Riley and Matt Olson had two hits apiece for the Braves. Olson played in his 895th consecutive game, tying Stan Musial for the eighth-longest streak in history. Holmes (7-4) allowed five hits.
Miami starter Ryan Gusto (0-3) tossed a season-high six innings and yielded one run on five hits. Leo Jimenez hit a two-run single in the ninth inning.
Red Sox 14, White Sox 2
Boston scored six runs in both the first and sixth innings en route to a win over visiting Chicago.
Seven Boston batters logged multi-hit games highlighted by Wilyer Abreu cracking two long homers, Caleb Durbin punctuating the opening frame with a grand slam and Willson Contreras recording RBI singles and scoring in both big innings. Jarren Duran also went deep and left-handed starter Patrick Sandoval (1-0) pitched five-plus innings for the Red Sox, who have won six straight and 15 of 18 since the All-Star break.
Chicago starter Davis Martin (9-6) allowed a career-high nine runs on 10 hits across five innings.
Mets 6, Guardians 2
Luis Torrens belted a three-run homer and drove in four runs while Bo Bichette and Carson Benge added solo shots as visiting New York handed Cleveland its ninth loss in 12 games.
New York starter Sean Manaea (3-5) beat Cleveland for the first time in nine years, working six innings and giving up two runs on seven hits. The left-hander struck out seven and matched his career high with five walks.
The Mets, who began a nine-game road trip, had dropped six straight to the Guardians. Their previous win in the series occurred on May 21, 2023. New York hadn’t won a game in Cleveland since April 17, 2016.
Phillies 5, Nationals 0
Jesus Luzardo pitched eight scoreless innings and Luis Arraez enjoyed a successful Phillies debut Tuesday in Philadelphia’s 5-0 victory over visiting Washington.
Arraez, acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants on Monday, went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run out of the cleanup spot. Trea Turner added three hits and scored twice for Philadelphia, which has won four games in a row following a stretch of eight losses in nine games.
The Nationals managed only four hits and two walks against Luzardo (10-5), who struck out seven in a 98-pitch effort. Washington right-hander Zack Littell came on midway through the first inning and allowed four runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 frames. He walked one and struck out two.
Yankees 2, Cardinals 0
George Lombard Jr. hit his first career home run in his major league debut, Ryan Weathers pitched six strong innings and host New York topped St. Louis to win for the 10th time in 16 games.
Lombard started at shortstop and batted eighth after the Yankees called him up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 21-year-old became the first Yankee to homer in his debut since Jasson Dominguez on Sept. 1, 2023.
Hunter Dobbins (2-2) took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked three. Nelson Velazquez had a double for the Cardinals’ only extra-bases hit.
Astros 7, Blue Jays 2
Taylor Trammell clubbed a three-run homer, Hayden Wesneski delivered a quality start and Houston evened its three-game series against Toronto.
The Astros were victorious for the 12th time in 14 games behind Wesneski (2-0) and a four-run fifth inning, a midgame rally that enabled Wesneski to record his second win in as many starts after missing the previous 14 months following Tommy John surgery. He allowed two runs on four hits in six innings. Jose Atuve had three hits and two RBIs.
Myles Straw, who doubled in the third, was the lone baserunner to reach scoring position against Wesneski until he produced an RBI triple that plated Andres Gimenez with one out in the fifth. Wesneski uncorked a wild pitch that scored Straw to tie it.
Reds 5, Athletics 4
Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart scored on a pair of wild pitches in the eighth inning to help Cincinnati rally past the visiting Athletics in the opener of a three-game series.
For the Athletics, who lost their sixth straight and their 22nd in 26 games, Hogan Harris (3-1) walked De La Cruz and Stewart to begin the eighth. It appeared the Athletics would escape with two outs, but a sacrifice fly sent De La Cruz to third and Stewart advanced a critical 90 feet when Harris, backing up third base, didn’t throw to second.
Julian Garcia (2-2) pitched a perfect eighth, while Emilio Pagan tossed a scoreless ninth for his 12th save in 15 opportunities. Brady Singer went six solid innings, giving the Reds another quality start, his sixth since June 1. He allowed three runs on five hits over six innings.
Rays 9, Rockies 7 (11 innings)
Liam Hicks hit a grand slam in his Tampa Bay debut and Ben Williamson scored the tiebreaking run on an 11th-inning wild pitch as the Rays beat Colorado in Denver.
Junior Caminero drove in an insurance run in the 11th with his second hit of the game for Tampa Bay, which earned its fifth win in seven games. Garrett Cleavinger (4-3) retired both batters he faced in the 10th inning. Bryan Baker recorded a 1-2-3 bottom of the 11th for his 32nd save.
Mickey Moniak and Willi Castro homered, Jake McCarthy had three hits and Ezequiel Tovar added two hits for the Rockies. Reliever Nick Frasso (0-1) lost in his major league debut.
Royals 8, Twins 2
Bobby Witt Jr. returned from the injured list with three hits and two RBIs, and Randy Dobnak continued his Kansas City success by allowing one run over five innings to beat visiting Minnesota.
Out since July 20 with low-back tightness, Witt didn’t miss a beat, highlighted by his two-RBI double during a three-run fifth for the Royals, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Jac Caglianone and Kyle Isbel each posted two hits with an RBI and Starling Marte added a two-run double in the eighth.
Ex-Twin Dobnak (2-0) allowed three hits and three walks, but only a fourth-inning run. In six outings for the Royals, including four starts, since making his 2026 debut, the right-hander owns a 1.16 ERA. Twins ace Joe Ryan (6-8) yielded five runs (four earned) plus seven hits over 5 1/3 innings. He’s yielded 16 earned runs over 15 1/3 innings.
Tigers 8, Mariners 0
Troy Melton pitched seven scoreless innings as Detroit defeated host Seattle.
Riley Greene, Gleyber Torres and Dillon Dingler homered for the Tigers, who won their fourth game in a row and fifth out of six. Melton (7-1) allowed just three singles.
Emerson Hancock (6-6) went six innings and allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits for the Mariners, whose two game-winning streak ended.
Padres 9, Diamondbacks 4
Manny Machado had three hits and drove in four runs, Randy Vasquez pitched six scoreless innings, and San Diego beat Arizona in Phoenix.
Jackson Merrill had three hits, two RBIs and two runs for the Padres, who jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings off Eduardo Rodriguez (10-4). The gap grew to 8-0 in the seventh inning before the D-backs scored. Vasquez (7-6) gave up two singles in six innings for his first victory since June 13.
Arizona’s Nolan Arenado and James McCann hit two-run homers off German Marquez in the seventh to close the deficit to 8-4 before Jake Cronenworth had a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Yellow Jersey, a Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained import, has set the pace in a specially arranged trial at Caulfield Heath, finishing ahead of Mr Brightside as preparations continue for Saturday’s meeting at Caulfield.
The French-bred colt by Dubawi is being primed for an assault on the Cox Plate, which this year will be contested over 2000 metres at Flemington.
Yellow Jersey has raced a mere five times, with only one start in Australia, where he finished second over 1600 metres at Eagle Farm in June.
Calvin McEvoy described the horse as an exciting prospect with a strong pedigree, a trait the stable has always valued.
“He was a bit underdone going into his first run in Brisbane as there had been a lot of rain and it wasn’t a perfect prep going to the mile first-up,” McEvoy stated.
“I think we’ve got a better handle on him this preparation and his trial in Sydney was super, he was very strong in that trial. I thought today he was better, more controlled.”
McEvoy mentioned that several options are available for the gelding’s initial start of the preparation.
“There is an aggressive Memsie Stakes, there is a benchmark 100 over 1400 metres the same day in which he would get 62 (kg),” McEvoy said. “There is the 1500-metre at Sandown the following week, there’s The Heatherlie. He’s got scope to do plenty. Trials are trials, so hopefully he can do it race day.”
Meanwhile, the Lindsay Park training partnership of Ben, Will, and J D Hayes are hopeful of gaining access to the Sandown track proper next Saturday for a final piece of work for Mr Brightside ahead of his return in the Memsie Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on August 29.
Mr Brightside’s second-place finish in Saturday’s trial was the second hit-out for the gelding as he prepares for his racetrack reappearance.
The now nine-year-old missed the autumn racing season after undergoing surgery for a bone chip.
Ben Hayes conveyed that the team was pleased with Mr Brightside’s trial.
“He was here to have a nice hit-out,” Hayes said. “He flew the gates, went to the front, had his ears pricked and he went to the line quite nicely, although he got caught on the line, but it is a trial. The most important thing is, he acted as he always does when he goes to the races. He was super quiet in the parade, he had a good healthy blow, and he’s still got to clean up in the coat a bit more.”
Mr Brightside was initially scheduled for a jump-out at Flemington on Wednesday, but the Lindsay Park team decided a trip on the float would offer more benefit.
“We had the opportunity to bring him to the track, give him the race day experience and now we’re two weeks out,” Hayes explained. “We’re in discussion with the MRC to have a course proper galloper next Saturday and then he should be spot on. We want him a bit more forward than we normally do because he’s a nine-year-old now and he missed the autumn.”
Keep an eye on Yellow Jersey as his spring campaign unfolds; betting markets will be keenly observing.

The teams split a pair of one-run decisions in a Monday doubleheader.
Cincinnati pulled out the nightcap in dramatic fashion as Elly De La Cruz notched his first walk-off hit in the majors with a double as the Reds won 6-5 in 10 innings to snap a three-game losing streak.
Myers forced extra innings by slugging a pinch-hit homer with two outs in the ninth. He has five home runs in 89 games this year, including one in each of the Monday games. Myers started the Monday afternoon contest and went 2-for-4.
Myers is 10-for-30 in pinch-hit opportunities this season. That ties him with the Chicago Cubs’ Michael Conforto for most pinch hits in the majors, and Myers missed nearly three weeks recovering from a shoulder injury he sustained in late June.
Reds manager Terry Francona, a .244 pinch hitter during his major league career, said coming off the bench to hit is a challenge.
“He’s got at-bats under his belt lately, which really helps,” Francona said about Myers, who has made 22 of his 42 starts this year since coming off the injured list on July 17. “But … even early in the year when he was getting that one at-bat, he was always ready to hit. It’s a good trait.”
The Cardinals failed to hold a lead in the ninth inning of the nightcap as they saw their three-game winning streak end.
A key reason why St. Louis has stayed in postseason contention has been the recent performance of closer Riley O’Brien. He earned his National League-best 31st save in the Cardinals’ 2-1 win on Monday afternoon before sitting out the second game.
O’Brien, 31, has held opponents scoreless in each of his past 10 appearances, permitting just one hit and five walks while striking out 11 in 10 innings.
O’Brien, a former Red, is in his first full season as a closer. He missed most of the 2024 season with a right forearm injury, and he dealt with a sore right shoulder late last season. In spring training this year, he strained his right calf, keeping him from pitching for South Korea in the World Baseball Classic.
“There’s so much work that’s gone into him becoming the closer that he’s been this year,” Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said. “You look at all the work in the offseason, the performance staff, the medical and everything. It’s just credit to the whole group, but we’re getting a really good version of him.”
The Tuesday game will feature a rematch of pitchers from the clubs’ July 26 matchup in St. Louis. Reds left-hander Andrew Abbott (6-7, 4.13 ERA) and Cardinals right-hander Kyle Leahy (9-4, 3.38) both went six innings. However, neither factored in the decision as Cincinnati won 5-3 in 10 innings.
Leahy, who is in his first season as a starter after working the past three in the bullpen, has thrown well over the last two months. In his past nine starts, the 29-year-old is 4-0 with a 1.52 ERA, 46 strikeouts and nine walks in 47 1/3 innings.
The Reds, though, have had some success against him. In 11 games vs. Cincinnati, Leahy has no decisions and a 6.12 ERA in 25 innings. His only three starts vs. the Reds have come this year, and he compiled a 6.00 ERA in those contests.
Abbott is 1-1 with a 6.19 ERA through three starts this month. In 10 lifetime starts against the Cardinals, he is 4-4 with a 3.83 ERA over 54 innings. The July 26 game was the only time he has faced St. Louis this year.

Brad Widdup, who has endured his share of tough close finishes on the track, has clinched a rare victory via the stewards’ room with his progressive mare, Mind Ya Bizz.
The four-year-old mare was initially placed second past the post in Saturday’s Petaluma Handicap over 1400 metres, finishing a half-head behind Transcend.

Following the race, jockey Zac Lloyd, the rider of Mind Ya Bizz, lodged a protest against Tommy Berry, who was aboard Transcend. Lloyd contended that his mount was subjected to a ‘severe bump’ by Transcend in the final strides.
“I’ve nearly fallen off my horse,” Lloyd reported to the stewards. “My horse has definitely come off second best in the bump.”
Berry, however, argued that Transcend had approached from a significant distance and possessed momentum. He stated to the stewards, “I believe the rightful winner has won the race.”
The panel of stewards, headed by chief stipe Tom Moxon, viewed the incident differently. They deemed the contact ‘heavy’ and upheld Lloyd’s objection, thereby changing the race result.
Widdup, who has experienced heartbreak in close finishes, notably with Icebath in prestigious events like the Golden Eagle, Doncaster Mile, and Cantala Stakes before her eventual Group 1 success in the Empire Rose Stakes in 2022, was relieved.
“You never want to win in the stewards’ room, but I think there was enough there,” Widdup commented. “There was a definite bump, and it was a close finish, so it was common sense.”
Mind Ya Bizz holds a special place in the stable, being from the same family as Widdup’s former smart mare Tintookie, who tragically died during a race day fall at the Golden Slipper meeting two years ago.
He believes Mind Ya Bizz has inherited the family’s talent. The mare is due for a spell, but she will be considered for the 2027 Provincial-Midway Championships.
“She’s still in that. If I can have those sort of bullets firing, we’ll have a look at it,” Widdup explained.

Owens will challenge CM Punk for the Undisputed WWE Championship on Friday. Owens became the No. 1 contender after his win in a fatal four-way match at SummerSlam. He and Punk exchanged words in a heated promo last week and seemed to be poised to tear each other apart.

The heat on the reigning champions is certainly on as Sunday Night’s Main Event and Night of Champions inch closer.
Kayla Alexander scored a team-high 16 points and hauled in seven rebounds as Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team opened the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament with a 72-57 win over Senegal on Monday.
Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb both chipped in with 13 points for Canada.
“I think it’s a good start for us. You always want to start with a win,” said Canadian head coach Nell Fortner. “I thought we played really tough and did a good job on the boards. We know Senegal is a very, very good rebounding team and tough to keep off the boards, so it’s nice to win that battle.
“It’s just nice to get that first win under our belt.”
Canada’s work on the glass was particularly evident at the offensive end, where the Canadians held a 15-8 advantage. Tara Wallack collected four offensive rebounds on her own to help Canada generate additional possessions.
Swords helped Canada take control early, connecting on three three-pointers in the opening quarter. The Canadians led by as many as 17 points and remained in front throughout, but Senegal made its push midway through the third.
Canada held a 26-14 advantage in points in the paint, shooting 52.5 per cent from that area. Points off turnovers were even at 11, while Senegal held a narrow 31-29 edge in bench scoring.
Canada will have a day off Tuesday before facing the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
The Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026 action will continue on Tuesday, August 18, with three matches set to take place across Pool C and Pool D, with at least one top spot up for grabs.
In Pool D, India will be back in action against South Africa in what could be a decisive game in their bid to keep their hopes of a top finish alive. India played out a 2-2 draw with China in their opening game, and a win against South Africa will put them temporarily in a top-two position. However, a draw or loss could result in them standing on the verge of losing their chance to qualify for the semifinals.
Meanwhile, in the same pool, England, who beat South Africa in their first game, will be up against China. A win for the English side will see them take their points tally to six, making them the first team in the Women’s World Cup 2026 to confirm a top-two finish.
On the other hand, the New Zealand vs Ireland match in Pool C will kick off the action, with both sides looking to keep their campaigns alive after losing their campaign openers against Belgium and Spain, respectively.

Vasquez-Imagn Images Last season, the Indianapolis Colts turned to longtime Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers when injuries wiped out their options at the position.
Now they are turning to one of his favorite targets for the same reason.
According to multiple reports Monday night, the Colts have agreed to terms with veteran free agent receiver Keenan Allen on a one-year contract potentially worth more than $8 million. The 34-year-old would be joining a receiver room left thin by offseason moves and injuries.
In March, the Colts traded veteran Michael Pittman Jr. to the Pittsburgh Steelers. And Indianapolis’ No. 1 receiver Alec Pierce, who led the league in yards per catch each of the past two seasons and signed a long-term extension in the offseason, has yet to take part in practice in camp as he recovers from offseason ankle surgery.
His status for Week 1 remains uncertain.
Enter Allen, a 13-year veteran drafted in the third round in 2013 out of Cal by the then-San Diego Chargers. He spent the first 11 years of his career with the franchise before being traded to the Chicago Bears in March 2024.
He returned to the Chargers last season, catching 81 balls for 777 yards and four scores while playing in all 17 games. His average of 9.6 yards per reception was a career low, but with Pierce and Josh Downs both able to stretch the field, Allen likely will play much more of a possession-type role with the Colts.
A six-time Pro Bowl selection, Allen has 12,051 receiving yards and 70 touchdowns on 1,055 receptions in his career. He is the Chargers’ all-time leader in receptions with 985, while his 11,307 yards are second to tight end Antonio Gates and his 63 receiving scores with the team are third behind Gates’ 116 and Lance Alworth’s 81. Both Gates and Alworth are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Last December, the Colts signed a 44-year-old Rivers — who had last played in the 2020 season — to start the final three games of the regular season. Indianapolis was trying to cling to a playoff spot after losing starting quarterback Daniel Jones and his backups to injury. However, the Colts lost all three games started by Rivers and ended the season on a seven-game losing streak.
