Rajat Patidar Produces Screamer To End Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s Onslaught In Duleep Trophy Semi-Final. Watch

India batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi played a quickfire knock of 40 during East Zone’s chase of 159 against Central Zone in the semi-final of the Duleep Trophy on Tuesday. The 15-year-old slammed three fours and two sixes during his 43-ball knock, including 18 off Yash Thakur‘s over. However, the pacer eventually had the last laugh as he got the better of Sooryavanshi on the final ball of the 14th over, despite conceding four consecutive boundaries earlier in the same over.

It took an extraordinary catch from Central Zone captain Rajat Patidar to cut short Sooryavanshi’s innings. Sooryavanshi tried to pull the delivery over the leg side but ended up miscuing it towards deep midwicket. Patidar had to cover plenty of ground while backtracking, but showed great composure to pull off a stunning catch.

Meanwhile, East Zone beat Central Zone by four wickets to enter the final of the Duleep Trophy.

Chasing 159 at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 1, East Zone rode on vice-captain Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s knock and an unbeaten 39-run cameo from skipper Ishan Kishan to book their place in the final.

Earlier on Day 3, veteran pacers Mukesh Kumar and Mohammed Shami shared seven wickets between them to bowl Central Zone out for 158 in their second innings after both teams had posted identical scores in the first innings.

On Day 2,  Sooryavanshi underlined his red-ball credentials with a 92 full of fire and brimstone, but East Zone failed to take an innings lead over Central Zone.

Left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey (4/66) and pacers Yash Thakur (3/66) and Aryan Pandey (3/43) shared all the wickets among them to bowl out East for 266, identical to Central’s first innings total.

In a match that has now been reduced to a second-innings shootout, Central are placed rather precariously at 45 for three at close.

At stumps, Aman Mokhade (23) and Aryan Pandey (4) were batting, but pacer Mukesh Kumar dealt a huge blow to Central, dismissing skipper Rajat Patidar in the closing minutes of the day.

But the 15-year-old Sooryavanshi was the star of the day and he became the youngest batter to score a fifty in the Duleep Trophy, surpassing Laxman Singh who achieved the feat as a 16-year-old in 1969.

Moses Itauma makes it clear who he wants to face next after shock Filip Hrgovic defeat

Published

on

Moses Itauma suffered a surprising defeat to Filip Hrgovic on Saturday, and the 21-year-old has now revealed who he wants to face upon his return.

Itauma looked to be fulfilling his destiny and dominating his Croatian opponent during the opening rounds at the O2 Arena over the weekend, but his success soon turned to desperation when Hrgovic’s chin held up and his own stamina did not.

An exhausted Itauma eventually collapsed in round nine of the contest, with Hrgovic pulling off a remarkable upset to throw the heavyweight scene a huge curveball, hand Itauma a first career loss and get his hands on the IBF heavyweight world title.

In an interview with talkSPORT Boxing, promoter Frank Warren revealed that Itauma has already asked for a rematch with ‘El Animal’.

“In that last round, he was still firing back. He has got a firing heart, he is a very brave young man, very brave. It’s now about what he does, how he prepares, he is saying to me, ‘can we get the rematch on?’, which is a natural reaction.”

Despite the 21-year-old’s desire to take on Hrgovic for a second time, it seems as though the latter will be made to face Cuba’s Frank Sanchez, who agreed to a step-aside deal to allow Itauma and Hrgovic to fight for the IBF title under the condition that he would face the winner.

Continuing, Warren seemed to confirm that a scrap between Hrgovic and Sanchez will be next, advising Itauma to take some time off before rushing into a second shot at the heavyweight throne.

“I told him, ‘you have got to just switch off from boxing, go and chill out, go and spend some time with your family and then come back, recharge your batteries and then we will get to work again,’

“The landscape is what it is, he is a a part of it, he has shown that he belongs at that level and provided that we learn and he learns some lessons from the fight, I think that he can go on and do some great things.”

In his post-fight interview, newly-crowned IBF champion Hrgovic spoke of his desire for a bout on home soil in Croatia; where he has not fought since 2019.

As a result, Warren may next target Zagreb for a clash between Hrgovic and Sanchez, which should take place within the next six months.

The most attractive pitching matchup in the majors is scheduled in Phoenix on Tuesday, when Eduardo Rodriguez of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Jesus Luzardo of the Philadelphia Phillies square off in a battle of left-handers.

You could look it up.

Each is on pace for personal records as the teams meet in the second contest of a three-game series with wild-card implications.

The Phillies (78-60) recorded a 2-1 win over the Diamondbacks (73-66) in the opener on Monday, keeping Philadelphia even with the Chicago Cubs for the top wild-card spot in the National League. The setback dropped Arizona a half-game behind the San Diego Padres for the third and final wild card.

Rodriguez (14-4, 2.50 ERA) has been the Diamondbacks’ ace in the best of his three seasons with them after signing a four-year, $80 million free agent deal before the 2024 season.

Luzardo (12-5, 3.09) has lived up the expectations that came with a five-year, $135 million contract extension he signed at the end of spring training.

Both are in the top eight in ERA in the National League, and they rank second and fourth among left-handers. Atlanta’s Chris Sale (2.06) and Luzado’s teammate Cristopher Sanchez (2.52) round out the top four lefties.

“I feel like the execution’s almost gone up to another level for (Luzardo),” Phillies designated hitter Kyle Schwarber told NBC Sports Philadelphia. “He’s not just out there trying to feel his way through. I feel like he knows what he wants to do out there, and he’s executing it.”

Luzardo enters September on pace for a career-low ERA and a career high in strikeouts, and with a little support he could also set a career high in wins. He was 15-7 with a 3.92 ERA and 216 strikeouts a year ago, with a career high in wins.

Luzardo struck out nine the last time out, a 6-0 road victory over Seattle on Wednesday. With 203 strikeouts, he joined Sanchez in an exclusive-to-Philadelphia club.

They are the third pair of left-handers to have successive 200-strikeout seasons with the same team in major league history in what has become a city tradition. Philadelphia A’s lefties Rube Waddell and Eddie Plank were the first two to do it in 1904-05 and Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels did it with the Phillies in 2012-13, according to baseball-reference.com.

Luzardo’s 1.12 WHIP is the second-best mark of his career. He had a 1.04 WHIP with Miami in 2022, when current Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly was his skipper with the Marlins.

“That was our main thing in Miami, was get him in the strike zone,” Mattingly told NBC Sports Philadelphia last week. “Stuff was kind of the same then as it is now.

“Obviously, more experienced, more polished. We knew if we got him in the strike zone, the swing-and-miss would be there. Everything would be there.”

Rodriguez has won four straight and seven of his last eight decisions.

“This is the best I felt all year on the mound,” he said after a 2-0 home victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, when he gave up two hits and struck out nine in seven innings. “The stuff was great. I feel like everything was working.”

Rodriguez refined his approach this season and is pitching more to contact with a five-pitch mix, leading with a four-seamer and a changeup, and results have followed.

Rodriguez’s ERA is exactly 1 1/2 runs lower than his career mark of 4.00, and would be almost one run better than his previous best, when he posted a 3.30 ERA while going 13-9 with Detroit in 2023.

Rodriguez is 2-1 with a 2.79 ERA in five career starts against the Phillies, with 40 strikeouts in 29 innings. Bryce Harper is 3-for-12 with a homer against him. Schwarber is 0-for-8.

Luzardo gave up five runs in 4 2/3 innings of a 5-4 home loss to the D-backs on April 10 and is 2-2 with a 5.53 ERA in six career starts against them. Gabriel Moreno is 2-for-6 against him.

In England, sometimes intensity can cover up mistakes

Published

on

Barcelona winger Anthony Gordon explained that there’s less scope for mistakes in La Liga going unpunished than in the Premier League after arriving from Newcastle United.

Gordon, 25, has made an impressive start to life in a new league, providing three assists in as many games. The England international made an instant impression, registering two assists in Barca’s La Liga campaign-opening 5-0 victory at Elche last month.

Although he’s yet to score for his new club, Gordon provided an assist as Hansi Flick’s side made it three wins out of three by beating Rayo Vallecano 5-2 at home at the weekend.

“I’m not going to deny that the Premier League is incredibly intense,” Gordon said (as per SPORT).

“The rhythm is relentless. There are physical battles everywhere, long ball kicks, corner kicks and a lot of contact. That’s why many English players believe it is the best league in the world. They’re used to that kind of chaos.”

Explaining the technical differences between the Premier League and La Liga, Gordon – who arrived this summer at the Camp Nou on a reported £80 million move – added:

“I loved playing in the Premier League, and it played a huge role in my development, but Spanish football demands a different level of tactical and technical intelligence. In England, sometimes intensity can cover up mistakes. You can miscontrol the ball and still recover by winning the next physical battle.

“Here, a bad first touch or a lack of concentration on your positioning can punish you immediately. The spaces are smaller; the decisions have to be faster, and everything must be cleaner.”

Gordon and Co. are atop the La Liga standings after three games, ahead of Real Madrid on goal difference.

Barcelona have made a superb start to the new season, winning their opening three La Liga games, keeping two clean sheets, to surge to the top of the points table.

Hansi Flick’s side will look to continue their winning run when they next visit Valencia on Saturday (September 5). The two-time defending champions are looking to complete a three-peat for the first time since 2011.

The Blaugrana beat arch-rivals Real Madrid to the last two La Liga titles, finishing eight and four points ahead, respectively. They also beat Los Blancos in the final to win the Supercopa de Espana.
