Just over six months since he was sacked by Manchester United, Ruben Amorim is understood to be the favourite to take over at one of Europe’s giants
Former Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim may join forces with Ralf Rangnick at AC Milan. At the start of 2026, Amorim was dismissed from his position at Old Trafford.
He was relieved from his position having hit out at the United board in an explosive post-match press conference, after a 1-1 away draw with Leeds United at Elland Road. Amorim has not been in a job since, but has been linked with some clubs in the Premier League.
However, it appears Italy could be the Portuguese coach’s next destination. With AC Milan looking for a new boss, he is understood to be the favourite. The ex-Sporting manager may also find himself working with ex-interim manager Rangnick, who is reportedly being considered as a ‘head of football’ at the club.

According to the Athletic, he has held talks with the Italian heavyweights, who parted with Massimiliano Allegri at the end of the campaign. They did have their eye on Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, until the Spaniard was hired by Liverpool.
Ex-Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, USA coach Mauricio Pochettino and Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness are also understood to be on Milan’s radar. When it comes to Rangnick, Milan have also been in direct contact.
He is currently the manager of Austria, but it’s understood the Italians have interviewed the ex-United interim boss. If Rangnick was to be appointed, he would sit above Amorim and work closely with him.
It would be an interesting dynamic considering both managers have their own strict football philosophies they do not want to part with. Amorim was determined to remain with his 3-4-3 formation, despite his constant struggle for results.
Meanwhile, Rangnick also tried to impose his ‘Gegenpressing’ style in a short amount of time at the club and struggled to do so. Both coaches departed United on disappointing terms.
The initial plan for Rangnick was to manage the club after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking until the end of the 2021-22 season before taking on a consultancy role at the club. When his managerial stint ended, the Austrian was not taking on in that capacity.
Meanwhile, Amorim last act at United was to hit out at the board while also insist he was the manager rather than the head coach. His final words were: “That is my job, not to be a coach. If people cannot handle the Gary Nevilles and the criticisms of everything, we need to change the club.
“No, no guys, I would say that I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach. Every department, the scouting department, the sport director needs to do their job. I will do mine for 18 months and then we move on. Thank you, guys.”
