Ryan Garcia ready to become new face of boxing after big win over Conor Benn

Published

on

LAS VEGAS — If Saturday’s performance was any indication of what the prime of Ryan Garcia is going to look like, boxing might truly be on the verge of catching fire once again.

Garcia (26-2, 21 KOs) entered the fight already considered one of boxing’s biggest crossover stars thanks to his electrifying skills and large social media following. Yet, headlining his first Mexican Independence Day Weekend card inside T-Mobile Arena, his second-round dismantling of British star Conor Benn (25-2, 14 KOs), to make the first defense of his WBC welterweight title, still felt like a true, star-making moment.

The 28-year-old Garcia, a native of Victorville, California, opened 2026 by dropping and dominating Mario Barrios over 12 rounds in February to win his first world title. And in the build to this weekend’s return, Garcia spoke confidently about his maturation, both physically and mentally, following years of inconsistent performances, substance abuse and toxic behavior outside of the ring.

On Saturday, “King Ry” as a fighter, very much appeared to have entered the peak of his powers as Garcia, thanks to his newfound poise and the evolution of his right hand, took the fight to Benn and efficiently put him away inside of two rounds. But maybe even more importantly, Garcia the man, who had a live band playing Christian worship music in his locker room as he warmed up before the main event, appeared mature enough to handle the responsibility of being the new face of the sport.

With Terence Crawford retired, Canelo Alvarez navigating his twilight and Gervonta “Tank” Davis inactive for the past 18 months amid endless legal troubles, there has been a void of late for a top fighter to carry the sport as the lead draw, although light heavyweight and cruiserweight champion David Benavidez has done an admirable job trying.

Garcia picked the right time to put the pieces of his career back together that had seemingly crumbled around him in the fallout of his 2024 drug suspension and his lifeless 2025 title loss to Rolando “Rolly” Romero. He was able to sell out arguably the sport’s premier arena on one of boxing and the Mexican culture’s signature weekends and helped create a live gate of more than $8 million for co promoters “The Ring,” Zuffa Boxing and Golden Boy Promotions.

Boxing’s new leading man, who doubles as the face of an absolutely rejuvenated welterweight division, also did a great job planting seeds of excitement for his future plans by calling out Teofimo Lopez Jr., the WBA titleholder, who attempted to rush the ring only to be held back by security. Garcia also called out WBO titleholder Devin Haney, who was also ringside, for a rematch of their 2024 bout, originally won via decision by Garcia before being changed to a no contest when Garcia failed a postfight drug test.

On the same night that Benavidez entered the ring following the co-main event to exchange pleasantries with The Ring and Zuffa champion Jai Opetaia to tease a superfight between them after Opetaia had stopped WBC titleholder Noel Mikaelian, Garcia set up future must-see fights that could serve the cornerstones of the boxing calendar for the next 12 months.

Garcia, when his head is on straight, is a huge key to boxing targeting younger in terms of his audience. He’s brash and charismatic with movie star looks. He knows how to sell a fight, doesn’t back down from danger and goes for the knockout throughout. And two fights into his reunion with his father, Henry Garcia, as head trainer, he also appears genuinely happy with his life and who he is.

Boxing, which has survived obituaries being written about the sport on a near annual basis, very much felt like it was back on this night. And Garcia, who ultimately did everything he said he would in the buildup to the Benn fight, appeared ready to lead it into the next era.

Joe Root achieves what no batter has done in 147 years of Test cricket, becomes first batter to score 2,000 fourth-innings runs
England’s Joe Root. (AP Photo)

Joe Root has added another extraordinary record to his already remarkable Test career, becoming the first player in the 147-year history of Test cricket to cross the 2,000-run mark specifically in the fourth innings. The England star reached the landmark during his unbeaten 62 against Pakistan in the third Test at Edgbaston, producing yet another defining contribution when his team needed him most.Fourth-innings batting is arguably the ultimate examination of a Test batter. The pitch is often at its most challenging, the target is on the scoreboard and every wicket brings the chasing team closer to defeat.Root has made that pressure situation his own.

Batter 4th Innings Test Runs
Joe Root (ENG) 2,059
Sachin Tendulkar (IND) 1,625
Alastair Cook (ENG) 1,611
Graeme Smith (RSA) 1,611
Shivnarine Chanderpaul (WI) 1,580

Root’s fourth-innings dominance reaches another level

Root’s historic achievement came during England’s chase of 130 in the third and final Test against Pakistan. The hosts suffered a nightmare beginning, losing Ben Duckett and Emilio Gay in the opening over to slip to 2/2.With Pakistan suddenly sensing an opportunity to defend a modest target, Root walked into the middle with England under pressure. As has so often been the case throughout his career, the situation appeared to bring out the best in him.Root steadied the chase alongside Jordan Cox, eventually remaining unbeaten on 62 as England reached 130/2 and completed an eight-wicket victory. Cox also remained unbeaten on 59, with the pair putting together a match-winning partnership after England’s early collapse. The victory completed a 3-0 Test series sweep for England, giving Root the perfect finish to his return to the Test captaincy.

Root also becomes the first batter to score 1,000 runs at Edgbaston

The fourth-innings record was not the only piece of history Root created at Edgbaston. During the same innings, he became the first batter to score more than 1,000 Test runs at the Birmingham venue. Root had entered the match needing 52 runs to reach the landmark, having already accumulated 948 runs at Edgbaston.Edgbaston is now the fourth Test venue where Root has scored at least 1,000 runs. His other major haunts are:

  • Lord’s – 2,203 runs
  • Manchester – 1,128 runs
  • The Oval – 1,050 runs
  • Edgbaston – 1,018 runs

That achievement places Root alongside Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting as only the third batter to score 1,000 or more Test runs at four different venues.

And then came another record involving Sachin Tendulkar

Root’s 62 not out also produced another major milestone. The innings was his 69th Test fifty, moving him to the top of the all-time list for half-centuries. That took him past India’s batting great Sachin Tendulkar, who finished his Test career with 68 fifties.Root now leads the list with 69, followed by Tendulkar on 68 and Shivnarine Chanderpaul on 66. Allan Border and Rahul Dravid have 63 each, while Ricky Ponting has 62. There is another remarkable aspect to that record: Root reached his 69 fifties in fewer Test innings than Tendulkar needed to reach 68.

Root’s 110th fifty-plus score

The 62 not out was also Root’s 110th Test innings in which he scored at least 50 runs. That tally includes 41 centuries and 69 fifties, underlining just how consistently he has converted opportunities into substantial scores throughout his career. Reuters confirmed the Edgbaston innings as his 110th Test score of 50 or more.

Rate the ref: Sunderland v Arsenal

Arsenal beat Sunderland 2-0, but John Brooks and Stuart Attwell face scrutiny after a disputed penalty and inconsistent handling of key incidents.

Photo by WM Sport Media/Getty Images

Arsenal left Sunderland with three points after a 2-0 win, but the performance of the officials was far less convincing.

There were questions over consistency, the application of the laws and the use of VAR, with several significant decisions going against the champions.

John Brooks: 3/10

Photo by WM Sport Media/Getty Images

The clearest example of inconsistency came with the treatment of throw-ins.

Brooks reversed an Arsenal throw after Riccardo Calafiori took 18 seconds to restart play.

According to figures by Scott Willis of Cannon Stats, Arsenal averaged 12.2 seconds over their throw-ins. Three took longer than 20 seconds and none exceeded 30.

Sunderland, meanwhile, averaged 22.5 seconds. Willis recorded “12 that took longer than 20 seconds, 5 that took longer than 30 seconds, and 3 that took longer than 40 seconds.”

Even excluding Sunderland’s long throws, which fall outside the new five-second rule, the home side still had five throw-ins that took more than 20 seconds.

John Brooks did not reverse any of them or even threaten to.

That discrepancy is difficult to justify. Arsenal were punished for taking 18 seconds, while Sunderland repeatedly took longer without suffering the same sanction.

The biggest decision, however, came when Brooks awarded Sunderland a penalty after Dan Ballard was judged to have been fouled by Ezri Konsa when Ballard had instead rolled Konsa to the ground.

The Match of the Day pundits (Thomas Frank and Ashley Williams) agreed it was not a penalty, while Mikel Arteta was furious after the final whistle.

There was more frustration when Martin Odegaard was stamped on without even being awarded a free-kick.

Gabriel was booked while attempting to calm matters after Sunderland players lost their temper, while fourth official Elliott Bell reported Mikel Arteta for leaving his technical area, resulting in another booking.

Brooks’ 3/10 reflects a performance in which the major decisions and the application of the laws lacked consistency.

The throw-in ruling was particularly hard to square with Sunderland being allowed substantially longer delays, while the penalty compounded Arsenal’s sense that they were being judged differently.

Stuart Attwell: 5/10

VAR Stuart Attwell fares slightly better at 5/10, but his failure to intervene over the Sunderland penalty was the most important part of his afternoon and he blew it.

At 0-0, the decision could have altered the course of the match.

The available footage showed Ballard rolling Konsa rather than Konsa bringing down the Sunderland defender, yet Brooks was not sent to the monitor.

That failure carried greater significance because Arsenal had already been told this week by the Key Match Incidents panel that they should have been awarded a penalty, with a red card shown, when Bruno Guimaraes was brought down against Aston Villa.

The Sunderland decision therefore made it two major penalty calls against Arsenal in only four Premier League matches.

VAR is not there to re-referee every physical contest, but a penalty is one of the most consequential decisions available to an official.

When the footage clearly shows that the player awarded the foul initiated the decisive contact, Attwell had an obvious opportunity to ask Brooks to look again and he refused.

Overall officiating rating: 4/10

Arsenal were good enough to overcome the officials and leave with a 2-0 victory, but the result should not disguise what happened.

The throw-in law was applied to Arsenal in a way it was not applied to Sunderland, a highly questionable penalty was allowed to stand, and other incidents were handled in a manner that added to the sense that Arsenal are still being refereed differently.

For Arteta and his players, that is the more troubling point. Errors will happen, but when the same side repeatedly appears to be refereed through media narratives rather than the evidence in front of the officials, frustration is inevitable.

Champions League round-up: PSG, Barcelona score big; Arsenal edge Napoli | Football News

Published

on

Six goals for Paris Saint-Germain, five for Barcelona and classically just one for Arsenal as the serious contenders for the Champions League started with wins on Wednesday.

There was a hat trick for Ferran Torres, the World Cup-winning goalscorer, on his PSG debut in the competition, and two goals for his new teammate Ousmane Dembele in a 6-1 beating of Slovan Bratislava by the two-time title holder.

At Barcelona, Raphinha scored two more in his rapid-fire start to the season, and Lamine Yamal fired a free kick through Feyenoord’s defensive wall in an easy 5-1 win.

It was a typically Arsenal 1-0 win at Napoli with the only goal scored by the English champion’s suddenly prolific captain Martin Odegaard. It’s his fourth goal so far after just one in the whole of last season.

All four English clubs won their opening games after Liverpool rallied to beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 with goals by midfielders Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister.

However, Liverpool saw its record signing Bradley Barcola limp off with an apparent calf injury in the second half.

Unheralded Stuttgart forward Ermedin Demirovic got a hat trick inside 12 first-half minutes in a 3-1 win over Norwegian debutant Viking.

Sporting Lisbon beat Galatasaray 3-1 having also trailed early in the game.

The high rate of goals 45 through the first 12 games in this Champions League campaign at a rate of 3.75 per game is well above the average of 3.47 last season. That was itself the highest rate since the 1960s in the old European Cup format.

Barcelona brush aside Van Bronckhorst’s Feyenoord ================================= Raphinha now has eight goals in just five games this season, as if sending a reminder to those who left his name off the Ballon d’Or nominations on Tuesday.

Barcelona got high-class goals from all angles, including from new signings Karim Adeyemi and Gabriel Jesus. Adeyemi found the top corner of Feyenoord’s net with a precise curling shot in the 22nd and Jesus came off the bench to glance in a header in the 85th.

Teenage star Yamal fired a free kick left-footed from 20 metres in the 77th that went at waist height between Feyenoord players jumping and turning sideways in the wall.

“He is outstanding,” Barcelona coach Hansi Flick said of Yamal, “You can see it every game. He is special.” Demirovic first, Torres second in Champions League hat trick count ========================================== A 12-minute hat trick by Stuttgart forward Ermedin Demirovic was just the eighth-fastest in the Champions League era, UEFA said.

The Bosnia-Herzegovina forward found his rhythm to strike in the 20th, 26th and 32nd minutes and give Stuttgart a decisive lead against Norwegian newcomer Viking, whose captain Zlatko Tripic had levelled in the 22nd.

PSG’s Ferran Torres followed suit hours later in the 31st, 47th and 57th minutes to make it two trebles after just 12 of the 189-game Champions League season.

Eight hat tricks were scored last season, including two by Kylian Mbappe in the league phase for Real Madrid, both in away games at Kairat Almaty and Olympiakos.

United fans to protest about controversial ticketing changes ahead of Manchester derby

Published

on

It is part of a widespread backlash against changes which have impacted innocent fans

Manchester United fans are set to gather before today’s derby to protest against the club’s controversial changes to tackle ticket touting.

They are expected to gather outside The Bishop Blaize pub near Old Trafford from 3pm on Sunday as part of a widespread backlash against moves which have impacted innocent fans. Plans are afoot to unfurl a banner above the player’s tunnel inside the ground which says ‘the way you treat us is a disgrace’ amid continuing discontent about the club’s ownership from some fans.

The club described the operation to address touting as ‘successful’, but admits ‘some innocent supporters may have been affected’ and apologised for the inconvenience during the process.

United have revealed that 685 season ticket holders have been banned after the operation and a further 464 received either a reduced sanction or a final warning. They insist no innocent fans have been banned with 468 cases said to have been resolved while 226 account holders received a final warning.

Club sources insist the operation has resulted in hundreds of touts being banned from Old Trafford and has broken up what they believe are large-scale organised networks buying tickets to sell on the black market.

The Manchester Evening News has spoken to several angry United season ticket holders across the summer following emails from the club alleging they had broken ticketing terms and conditions.

The fiasco brought together the various United fan groups, who took the unprecedented step of releasing a joint statement condemning the operation and demanding transparency from the club.

One supporter group The 1958 has announced a protest against the ‘season ticket banning crackdown’ before the Manchester derby, declaring that ‘a line has been crossed’.

A spokesman confirmed: “Manchester United supporter groups are being called upon to all stand together following reports of bans and season ticket sanctions without clear and compelling evidence always being presented.

“For generations, match-going Reds have given their time, money and loyalty to Manchester United, home and away. That loyalty deserves to be treated with respect.”

The 1958 have urged supporters to gather peacefully outside The Bishop Blaize pub near Old Trafford in a show of unity from 3pm on Sunday.

The spokesperson added: “This is not about one group or one individual. It is about how Manchester United treats its match-going supporters. It may not affect you today, it may not next time but that day is coming for all of us.

“ALL REDS. ALL GROUPS. ONE VOICE. SHOW THE EVIDENCE. LIFT THE BANS.”

A club statement said: “Over the course of the summer, Manchester United undertook an operation to review accounts that showed irregular activity resembling ticket misuse. We committed to providing a further update once our investigation had concluded.

“The club’s guiding principle around ticketing is simple: to keep our fans safe and secure, to protect fair access to tickets for genuine Manchester United supporters and to tackle ticket touting, misuse and activity for financial gain.

“The investigation identified 1,617 accounts where unusual activity was occurring and required further review. Each account holder was contacted and given the opportunity to provide information and explain the activity identified on their account. They were also told what activity had been identified to be able to respond to the club with an appropriate level of detail.

“Where satisfactory explanations were provided, restrictions were removed and no further action was taken. In many of those cases, the cause was sharing of account details and passwords, which is in breach of our terms and conditions. We recognise that many supporters have shared account login details in circumstances they regarded as legitimate, and we did not anticipate the extent to which this was occurring. In those cases, where there was no additional evidence of misuse, no sanction was imposed.

“Supporters then had the right to appeal to an independent appeals panel, which includes fan representation, established to provide an impartial review of decisions separate from the original investigating team.

“Ahead of the panel convening, where sanctions had been applied, a further review stage was implemented where each case subject to multiple levels of checks, conducted by club employees.

“All appeals have now been heard. The most serious sanction (a season ticket ban) was reserved for where there was sufficient evidence of tickets being sold above face value or activity for financial gain.”

Tyler Donaldson-Aitken lands career-first Black Type win at Flemington in 2026

Published

on

Young Ballarat trainer Tyler Donaldson-Aitken is unlikely to ever forget Makybe Diva Stakes Day 2026, having secured a career-defining victory with his stable’s standout, Welcometotheshow.

The tenacious gelding propelled Donaldson-Aitken to his maiden Black Type success, a significant milestone achieved with his 50th starter, in the $175,000 Listed Tontonan Stakes run over 1400 metres.

Welcometotheshow, with Craig Newitt in the irons, demonstrated superior grit to defeat horses trained by international Group 1 winner Henry Dwyer (Cote Atlantique), Lindsay Park’s Hayes brothers (Cafe Millenium), and prominent trainer Danny O’Brien (Sass Appeal), providing Donaldson-Aitken with an unparalleled career highlight.

“It means a lot,” he expressed.

“It means a lot to the team, as well. Horses only run well when you’ve got them happy and you’ve got the right people behind them.

“So a big thank you to everyone involved. Big thank you to my partner, Briony, she’s a big support of mine and to come here and get a win like this, it’s massive.”

Donaldson-Aitken now faces the pleasant dilemma of identifying future targets for the five-year-old entire, but first, he intends to fully celebrate the magnitude of Saturday’s accomplishment.

“I’m pretty over-tired, so I wouldn’t mind going home having a rest,” he commented, knowing such a plan was improbable.

“All the guys are here, the missus is here, so we’ll go to have some dinner, we’ll have a good time and we’ll treat everyone and make the most of the win.

“They’re few and far between and we’ll make a big deal of it.”

US Open 2026 final: Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton emerge from shadows of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

Published

on

At the start of the season, the odds on Zverev winning two Grand Slam titles would have been long. They are considerably shorter now.

The French Open champion is a slight favourite to beat Shelton as he looks to double his tally of major wins – not only for the year, but his career.

After three defeats in major finals, many thought the 29-year-old had missed his chance to win one of the sport’s biggest prizes given how Sinner and Alcaraz – who swept the Grand Slams in 2024 and 2025 and together earned the ‘Sincaraz’ tag – have dominated.

But injuries to the standout pair – Alcaraz missing the French Open and Wimbledon, with Sinner ruled out of the US Open – have opened the door for someone else to make a push.

Asked if he thought he could end 2026 with more major wins than them, Zverev said: “I believed in it. I believed that it’s possible. I think not many of you guys did.

“I think the question was always: Is Carlos and Jannik going to play all four Grand Slam finals between each other again?

“Of course, it was a very legit question with how the last two years went. I’m happy with how this year went so far, but I’ve got another big match on Sunday.”

Zverev is contesting his second US Open final, having squandered a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem in 2020 – a gutting defeat that cut deep.

In the seasons that followed, Zverev often played in the latter stages at Slams with the demeanour of a man who lacked belief that his time would ever come.

His mental misgivings were finally put to bed by beating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in the final at Roland Garros and, after finishing runner-up to Sinner at Wimbledon, he has now reached a third successive Grand Slam final.

A below-par Zverev ground through the opening rounds at Flushing Meadows in a series of early-morning finishes, but he gradually improved over a fortnight where he has not yet faced a top-20 opponent.

Shelton will present a considerable step up in quality but, like Cobolli, is another opponent who may feel the weight of occasion too difficult to bear.

Becky Lynch sends a message to Liv Morgan after costing her the Women’s World Championship at WWE live event

Published

on

Becky Lynch played a huge role in Liv Morgan’s shocking Women’s World Championship loss at the WWE live event in Chile. The Man doubled down on her actions with a message to the Judgment Day star after the match.

Liv Morgan and Stephanie Vaquer had been colliding for the Women’s World Championship at WWE’s ongoing tour of South America. However, constant interference from The Judgment Day led to Adam Pearce announcing Becky Lynch as the special guest referee for the match between Liv and Stephanie at the Chile house show.

The differences between Becky and Morgan were on display during the match, and The Man even refused to count to three after Liv raised her hands on her. Ultimately, Stephanie Vaquer capitalized on the issues between the two and won the title in her home country.

Becky reflected on her actions at the live event with a message for Liv on social media. The Man reminded the Judgment Day star not to mess with her.

Becky Lynch and Liv Morgan have unfinished business between them

Liv Morgan’s Women’s World Championship reign came to an end at the house show in Santiago, Chile, as she was dethroned by Stephanie Vaquer. Becky Lynch played a major role in the Judgment Day star’s loss, as she did not count to three when Liv had the match in her grasp. We will see the fallout from the event on RAW, where Becky and Liv are likely to come face-to-face once again.

The Man also has her sights set on the Women’s World Championship and could be Stephanie Vaquer’s first challenger for the title. However, Liv is unlikely to let the feud end without demanding a rematch. Many speculate that the three women could meet in a triple-threat match at Money in the Bank premium live event.

The differences between Becky Lynch and Liv Morgan go back years, as Liv started her first Women’s World title reign after defeating The Man. Lynch took a long hiatus after the match.
