Manchester City striker Erling Haaland is continuing to impress at the World Cup as Norway sealed their spot in the round of 32 in the early hours of Tuesday morning
Erling Haaland’s remarkable World Cup debut continued with the Manchester City striker bagging himself another brace as Norway beat Senegal 3-2 in New Jersey to seal their qualification from Group I.
With Norway leading through Marcus Pedersen, Haaland doubled his nation’s advantage as he slotted the ball home following a Martin Odegaard pass. Senegal were soon back in the game thanks to Ismaila Sarr’s effort but Haaland sealed his brace, 10 minutes after his first, as he adjusted well to convert Patrick Berg’s cross. Sarr would score his second in stoppage time to set up a nervy finish.
However, the Norwegian’s held on to pick up another victory and seal their spot in the knockouts. Haaland’s goals meant he has now become his country’s all-time record World Cup goalscorer with four to his name. Unsurprisingly after another starring performance, the striker was hailed by the media in Norway.

Dagbladet handed Haaland their highest rating of an eight out of 10. “Opened weakly, but then he was back in business,” they wrote. “Scored two goals in the second half. What he does scares the world at the World Cup.”
Haaland received a similarly high score from NRK, who handed him a nine out of 10. They explained: “Norway’s talisman continues. Tried to score another goal, but missed an open goal from an oblique angle.
“Makes up for it when he is clinical as only he can after the break. [He] is now Norway’s all-time top scorer in the World Cup. Also good in the build-up phase.”
Meanwhile, TV2 pundit and former Norwegian youth international Jesper Mathisen said: “Haaland loves the World Cup, and the world loves Haaland. [Stale] Solbakken gave his biggest star a slightly calmer entrance to the World Cup, and now we see Haaland in his very best form.
“There are plenty of people in both Iraq and Senegal who have nightmares about Haaland after these two games, and he spreads fear among opponents that only the world’s very best players can do.”
Victory for both Norway and France, who defeated Iraq 3-0 in a storm delayed clash in Philadelphia, means those two nations will battle it out for top spot in Boston, Massachusetts on Friday. France hold a slight advantage with a one-goal better goal difference. But in his post-match interview, Haaland insisted he was not thinking about the clash with the French later this week.
“Honestly, I don’t care too much now,” he said to reporters. “We’re through, we managed to get through which is incredible. “I couldn’t care too much about that game now. They’re probably going to win against us and they’re probably going to win the whole tournament.”
