Shakur Stevenson makes final Rolly Romero vs Teofimo Lopez prediction: “He can make him look silly”
Shakur Stevenson is unsure that Teofimo Lopez has taken enough accountability to right the wrongs of his last performance and dethrone Rolando Romero.
The 29-year-old will attempt to become a three-weight world champion this weekend, having previously cemented himself as the top dog at 135 and 140lbs.
In both of those divisions, Lopez defined his reigns by respectively outpointing Vasyl Lomachenko and Josh Taylor, with such title-winning performances offering the impression of a generational talent.
Unfortunately, though, ‘The Takeover’ has been unable to sustain his brilliance to the extent that fans are already clamouring for him to join the Hall of Fame.
In his last outing, for instance, Lopez lost a wide unanimous decision to Stevenson who, while a sublime technician, was hardly expected to win in such dominant fashion.
Romero, meanwhile, is making a first defence of his WBA welterweight title at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena after having not fought since outpointing Ryan Garcia.
Back then, in May 2025, ‘Rolly’ pulled off a sizable upset to drop and unanimously outscore his man, before eventually being upgraded from ‘regular’ to full champion.
In terms of a prediction, however, Stevenson had told FightHype that Lopez should ultimately have the skills to emerge victorious.
“Teo’s a great fighter. Even now, if I know the Teo that’s supposed to go out there and do what he been doing, he should beat Rolly.
“I think Rolly, mentally, is a tougher dude than a lot of people know and expect; I think Rolly is a smarter dude than a lot of people know and expect.
“But I think Teo should be on another level. When big punchers get in front of him, he makes them look silly.
“My only thing with Teo is that I don’t think he took much accountability after I fought him.”
While backing his former opponent to get the job done, Stevenson is clearly uncertain that Lopez has rectified the mistakes he made in their January encounter.
American raider Bacio (3/1 favourite) led from the stalls to claim a notable victory in the Group 1 Coolmore City Of Troy Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Friday.
Trained by Wesley Ward, who had come close to winning this sprint Group 1 before, the Juan Hernandez-ridden son of Maclean’s Music broke smartly from the gates, and led all the way.
When ridden by Hernandez inside the final furlong, the three-year-old quickened clear and was never in danger, as he took out a length-and-three-quarters victory for owners Myracehorse, Gladwell, Dailey and Dejablu.
Only beaten once in his racing career to date over five furlongs, when second at Santa Anita in October 2025, the chestnut colt had won his previous race in Britain, in the Palace Of Holyroodehouse Handicap at Royal Ascot in June.
This afternoon, the Rossa Ryan-ridden Starlust (25/1) was second for Ralph Beckett, while Rumpstar (22/1) was third, under Rob Hornby, a nose behind the runner-up.
Al Nayyir takes Lonsdale Cup
Al Nayyir (9/1) outstayed Illinois to win the Group 2 Weatherby’s Lonsdale Cup over 2 miles and 56 yards.
The 8-runner race saw William Buick keep the Tom Clover-handled eight-year-old in mid-division for much of the contest, before making significant headway at the one-furlong pole.
The Ryan Moore-ridden Illinois, who had been prominent throughout, claimed the lead with two furlongs to run. The son of Galileo wasn’t headed until the dying strides of the race, and had to settle for second at 13/2.
Mount Atlas (4/1), for the inform Andrew Balding, took third under P J McDonald, two-and-a-quarter lengths behind the runner-up.
Arapaho Gold wins Gimcrack
The race favourite, Marco Polo (13/8), could only manage eighth place in the Group 2 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Gimcrack Stakes for Aidan O’Brien, Ryan Moore and the Coolmore partners.
Arapaho Gold (2/1) was a three-quarters-of-a-length winner for Connor Beasley and Michael Dodds, with Final Objective (18/1) second under James Doyle.
Another winner for Colin Keane
Colin Keane bagged another York winner this afternoon when partnering Joseph O’Brien’s Benjamin Hornigold (16/1) to victory in the £100,000 British Stallion Studs EBF Convivial Maiden Stakes (GBB Race).
Named after an English pirate, the son of Blackbeard had two lengths to spare over Dover Street (40/1) and Pat Dobbs, with Sole Ambition (33/1) third for Kieran Shoemark.
The Walter Cup is missing — or at least the replica version of the trophy that belongs to the Professional Women’s Hockey League champion Montreal Victoire, the league told The Associated Press on Friday.
Without going into detail, the PWHL issued a statement saying the trophy “did not arrive as expected at its latest stop,” and added “we are working closely with the shipping company to locate it.”
The trophy was supposed to be shipped to Lethbridge, Alta., to spend the day with Victoire forward Dara Greig, a person with knowledge of the plans told the AP on the condition of anonymity because those details were not revealed by the league. The container arrived, but without the Walter Cup inside, leading to Greig postponing her day with the trophy on Thursday, which included a public event at the city’s VisitLethbridge.com Arena on Thursday.
It’s unclear where the Walter Cup was last seen. And unlike the NHL and the Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not have a person dedicated to travel with its trophy when it goes on the road to be with players.
The missing Walter Cup in question is not the one presented to teams on the ice upon winning the championship. That one is permanently housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
The missing version is instead a close replica issued to championship-winning teams to keep for themselves.
The replica, like the original trophy, is made of sterling silver and designed by Tiffany & Co. It weighs about 35 pounds (16 kilograms) and measures about 24 inches (61 centimetres) in height and 13 inches (33 centimetres) wide.
The cup rests on two rods, resembling hockey sticks. On the cup are engraved six W’s representing the league’s six original franchises. The base of the cup represents a puck on which the championship teams are etched.
Montreal clinched the cup by defeating Ottawa in Game 4 of a best-of-five series in May to become the PWHL’s first Canadian team to win title. Minnesota won the PWHL’s first two championships.
The trophy is named after PWHL founder and primary financier Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra.
Many appear quite willing to leave J.J. McCarthy for dead. Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter is not among them.
Baltimore’s skipper chatted after the pair of joint practices at TCO Performance Center. I took the chance to ask him about his views on Minnesota’s McCarthy. After all, Coach Minter is part of the Jim Harbaugh coaching tree and he helped to coach the quarterback at Michigan (albeit as a defensive coach). He had nothing but good things to say.
J.J. McCarthy Gets Praise from Minter
To a certain extent, Minter is running interference for McCarthy. The Ravens’ coach is trying to keep things upbeat and positive even if it’s obvious that the quarterback hasn’t always been sharp.
Fair.
But then there’s some more insight in what Minter discusses. Go ahead and see what he had to say: “Yeah, J.J., obviously was at Michigan with him for two years […] He’s a really young player and I think he’s got a lot of upside still. He’s a gamer, he’s a winner, he makes plays. He can make plays with his legs, he can make all the throws.”
Minter then swerved into the more candid and fascinating portion of his answer.
Check out how the coach ended his J.J. McCarthy response: “He had a pretty expansive run game at Michigan. There wasn’t maybe always the same type of concepts that he’s doing now, so I think he’s still learning. But I’ve got nothing but good things to say about J.J.”
A few thoughts.
To begin, Coach Minter is exactly right about several points. McCarthy is still only 23. Don’t lose sight of how young that is. Some of the players who get drafted in the 2027 NFL Draft — next April — are going to be older than McCarthy even as he enters his fourth NFL season.
Moreover, Minter is exactly right that the young arm boasts impressive wheels. He’s not as explosive as Kyler Murray but McCarthy is a very good athlete. Combining the arm talent and speed with that built-in swagger means J.J. McCarthy can be a “gamer.”
What’s notable is what gets included at the end: the run game for the Wolverines and the passing concepts that McCarthy has struggled to master in Minnesota.
Minter is likely exactly right. However, does that shift the spotlight back onto Kevin O’Connell somewhat?
Tasking the kid with carrying the offense with a less-than-formidable ground game is a pretty foolish approach. Last year, J.J. McCarthy was a 22-year-old first-time NFL starter coming off a missed rookie season due to injury. Handing the ball off more would have been prudent.
There’s then the adjustment period to the passing concepts that Minnesota is leaning on. Needing further refinement isn’t much of a surprise since he’s still so young and has missed so much time due to being in the infirmary. There are still questions, though.
Did Minnesota’s leadership group fully appreciate how large the chasm was between Michigan’s passing attack and what would be demanded in Minnesota’s passing attack?
In 2025, J.J. McCarthy completed 57.6% of his passes, a horrible number. He then had 1,632 yards to stand alongside 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Minnesota went 6-4 under his guidance.
McCarthy is expected to earn a beefy workload in tomorrow’s Ravens preseason game.

Melbourne returns from its bye needing a win to keep its faint finals hopes alive, while Penrith is trying to regain momentum after slipping from top spot. The Storm’s 42-20 victory over Manly ended a three-match losing run and the returns of Harry Grant and Jack Howarth improve their organisation and edge defence. Penrith has lost five of its past eight, although Casey McLean’s return offsets Paul Alamoti’s hamstring absence. Nathan Cleary and Cameron Munster again carry much of the creative responsibility in a rivalry Melbourne has won four of the past six times. Welcome to Fully Equipped’s weekly Tour equipment report. Every Friday of PGA Tour weeks (plus other times, if news warrants), GOLF equipment editor Jack Hirsh runs you through some of the biggest news surrounding golf clubs on Tour, including changes, tweaks and launches.
ST. LOUIS — There’s a sneaky trend going on with wedges on the PGA Tour, and it’s something wedge designers have spent the last decade-plus eradicating.
Over the past year, Rickie Fowler and Gary Woodland started playing Cleveland prototype RTZ wedges with a ton of offset built into them. We’re talking aggressive goose-neck hosels.
With Fowler having a solid year and Woodland earning his first victory since the 2019 U.S. Open, it appears other players and OEMs have taken notice.
That includes Cobra, which now has both Woodland and Fowler playing offset versions of Cobra’s King and Snake Bite wedges.
“I think it’s definitely a contact component in there,” Ben Schomin, Cobra’s tour operations manager, told GOLF about Woodland and Fowler’s wedges. “They both feel like they can center it up more. They can keep it lower on the face longer. That increased offset actually provides a little bit more shaft lean at impact, which, you know, allows them to basically flight the ball a little lower. Keep it lower on the face longer. Just feel like they have more control.”
Those benefits were echoed by Michael Jolly, Cleveland/Srixon’s director of tour operations. Cleveland has been working on RTZ prototypes with offset in them since last summer, spurred by the return of company founder Roger Cleveland.

“For us, it really came from Roger Cleveland,” Jolly said. “He is a big believer in offset — see the Cleveland 485 wedge — and its benefits. Primarily, it’s knowing that the built-in shaft lean, really prevents the ball from ‘riding the face’. That shot that rides the face, comes out higher than anticipated with less spin. Players that experiment with offset see a ball that comes out lower with more spin.”
While Cleveland has been working on these wedges for more than a year, Cobra started exploring the increased offset concept over the past four or five months, Schomin said.
It started with Schomin double-bending the lower part of the hosel on wedges to add offset. This week, though, the truck started getting 3D-printed prototypes with offset already baked in.
Schomin added that it’s funny to talk about the offset design because it’s something that was common in wedge design 15 years ago. Offset is something legendary short-game instructor Phil Rodgers, who worked with Cobra on the original Trusty Rusty wedge, believed was important to the design. Schomin pointed out that he was mentored by Rodgers as well and felt the same.
“The offset that we’re talking about now, if we looked at a wedge from, say, 30 or 40 years ago, it probably [would be] quite similar,” Schomin said. “So it seems like over the years, you know, especially in wedge design, offset has become less.”
And while both Cobra and Cleveland are intentionally taking offset to the extreme, other OEMs seem to be playing with it to match specific player preferences.
Last week, Cameron Young switched back to a Vokey K* lob wedge, the same grind he had used for much of the past two seasons, from a 64T lob wedge bent to 62˚ to remove the bounce he used as conditions got firmer this summer.
One of the most popular lob wedge grinds on the PGA TOUR, the K* features a low-bounce sole that originates from the .06K Grind. Instead of the full, smooth sole of the K, the K* features a steeper pre-wear on the leading edge as well as heel, toe and trailing edge relief. The pre-wear helps resist excessive digging on square-faced shots, while the heel, toe and trailing edge relief adds greenside versatility when the face is opened. Like all K Grind variations, K* has a wide sole that excels out of the bunker. Justin Thomas, Lottie Woad, Cameron Young and the 2024 Champion Golfer of the Year are among the many players who travel with a K* lob wedge in their bag week in and week out.

Bending that 64 strong also added a good bit of offset, something Young wanted replicated in a new K*. His gamer K* is also 62˚, but it’s bent weak from 60, which actually removes offset.
To make the weak K* look more like the strong 64T, Vokey tour tep Aaron Dill double-bent the hosel to create the additional offset.
“His has always been good for him, but when he made the switch to the 64 it came with that slight change in appearance,” Dill said. “We wanted to make the least amount of changes here and simply provide the same support and forgiveness he loves in K*-Grind but with the looks he was more recently familiar with.”
Dill made it clear Young’s change was purely a visual preference rather than seeking the performance benefits of offset.

Last year, Ping did something similar for Sahith Theegala when Kenton Oates and Adam Harding took a 62˚ S159 wedge and bent it to 59˚ and reground the sole to account for the lost bounce.
And last week, Collin Morikawa made a surprise move to play a highly customized TaylorMade MG5 lob wedge with a double-bent hosel. The goal was for Morikawa to get his hands more forward while chipping.
So is offset coming back to wedges or are these just one-offs for specific players? The answers are a little mixed. For starters, many modern Tour players have never seen wedges with the kind of offset that Fowler and Woodland are playing.
“This visual hasn’t been a common request on its own,” Dill said. Jolly added that “it probably has limited use.”
Schomin sang a more optimistic tune.
“I think it is something that could end up back at retail,” he said. “We’ll see as time goes on, if it’s something that more guys want to adopt or want to test. You know, it seems to be working quite well for a couple of guys that we have using it right now.”

Scottie Scheffler’s new Qi4D? It was his backup
Turns out the new Qi4D driver Scottie Scheffler put in the bag and won with last week in Memphis wasn’t so new to him.
Scheffler dominated last week’s gear headlines by finally switching to a new driver model after a nearly three-year-run with the TaylorMade Qi10. At his pre-tournament press conference on Wednesday, Scheffler revealed that the driver he switched to, a custom Qi4D with a glossy crown and bright blue face, was actually his current backup driver.
The motivation to switch was that he felt his Qi10 gamer was getting close to potentially being non-conforming if he was selected for a random CT test.
“I felt like my driver was going to get close to where, if it got tested again, it was going to get close to failing,” he said. “It had been in my bag for a long time, so I felt I needed to make sure the backup was in a good spot. The backup I was using was the Qi4D and I just put it put it in the bag a few times last week when I was playing at home … I liked what I saw, and so I figured I’d give it the old college try in Memphis and, yeah, it seemed to work out pretty well.”
Scheffler gained more than 2 strokes off the tee, finishing 13th in the field, on his way to the eight-shot win last week at the FedEx St. Jude.

The World No. 1 said his testing had always shown the Qi4D to be faster and his stats back that up. Scheffler’s average ball speed in Memphis was his highest mark of the year at 181.66 mph, more than 3 mph above his season average of 178.44 mph.
The last time he averaged more than 180 mph off the tee was at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. That also happened to be the last event where he tested out the Qi4D driver.
Matt Fitzpatrick and J.J. Spaun try to rekindle major magic
What do Matt Fitzpatrick and J.J. Spaun have in common? Aside from both winning the U.S. Open in the past four years, they’re both returning to clubs that helped win them the Jack Nicklaus medal.
Spaun returned to his L.A.B. Golf DF3 putter — the same one he won this U.S. Open — after putting it in what he called a “two-month timeout.”
“Kind of like kids, like, you know, when they’re not behaving, you put them in timeout for a little bit and then they start listening better and cooperating. So I think it learned its lesson being in timeout,” he said Thursday.

Wigan Warriors head coach Matt Peet told BBC Radio Manchester:
“I’m really pleased. We were against a good team that threw a lot at us. I liked our effort, particularly defensively. I thought second half we weren’t great with the ball, but I loved our defence.

Early extension is a swing flaw that afflicts many recreational golfers. When the pelvis shifts toward the ball too early during the downswing, you put yourself in a difficult position to make consistent contact. That’s why it’s crucial to correct the mistake when you see it infecting your swing.
Understanding the proper technique for eliminating early extension is important, but so too is teaching your body what it feels like to swing without it. That’s where utilizing a training aid comes in handy.
Back at our GOLF Top 100 Teacher Summit late last year, I met with instructor Tony Ruggiero to discuss just that. And during our talk, he showed how swinging with a resistance band around my legs was a great way to train my body to swing without early extending.

“It engages your core which stabilizes your lower body,” Ruggiero said. “If you keep the tension and pressure on that band going through, it’s very difficult to stand up.”
This is a great drill to practice on the range when you are actually hitting golf balls. After a while, you can take the band off and try to maintain that feel when you swing. If you can continue to feel that pressure on the outside of your legs, you will stabilize your core and make it difficult to early extend.

It’s a sight we’ve been used to over the last year and the Gunners certainly looked like they’ve picked up where they left off.
Martin Odegaard impressed again after his superb outing in the Community Shield.
It could be a good season for the Arsenal captain should he stay fit.
