Team Akwa Ibom Make History at 7th National Squash Championship
The Akwa Ibom State squash team has announced its arrival on the national stage with a spectacular performance at the 7th edition of the National Squash Championship, emerging as the overall best team with an impressive haul of five gold, two silver and three bronze medals.
Team Akwa Ibom dominated the junior categories, winning gold medals in the U-11 Boys, U-13 Boys, U-13 Girls, U-17 Boys and U-17 Girls categories.
The team also secured silver medals in the U-11 Boys and U-17 Boys categories, while bronze medals were won in the U-11 Girls and U-13 Girls categories, taking the state’s overall medal tally to ten.
The championship, organised by Squash Ex-Professional Players, attracted junior players from different states across the federation, with Team Akwa Ibom ultimately finishing as the tournament’s overall best-performing team.
The 7th edition featured male and female junior players competing in the U-11, U-13, U-15 and U-17 categories and was held at the Abuja National Stadium, Abuja.
Akwa Ibom was represented by a 14-player contingent comprising eight male and six female players, with the team led by coach Ibanga Etukudo.
Speaking after the team’s impressive outing, Engineer Iniobong Esuene, board member of the Nigerian Squash Federation and Vice chairman of the Akwa Ibom State Squash Association described the achievement as a significant milestone for squash in Akwa Ibom State, noting that it was the first time in a long while that the state had emerged victorious at a national championship. “ The best result ever in the history of squash in our state” delighted Engineer Ini Obong said.
The impressive performance has also earned the young athletes further opportunities to compete at major national events. Thirteen of the 14 Team Akwa Ibom players have been invited to participate in the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo Tournament in Abeokuta as well as the National Racquet Festival in Ibadan, both scheduled to take place later this year.
The remarkable achievement underscores the growing strength of squash development in Akwa Ibom State and provides further evidence of the impact of sustained investment in grassroots sports development.
With ten medals and invitations to two major national competitions, Team Akwa Ibom’s performance in Abuja represents a significant step forward for the state’s squash programme and another encouraging chapter in Akwa Ibom’s emerging sports renaissance.
For the most part, Minnesota has been a healthy football team. Unfortunately, safety Jamal Adams stands out as the exception since he’s now done for the year.
The Vikings filled the open spot with a young player for the secondary.
Consider what the team’s official social media had to say: “The #Vikings have signed CB @brycephillipsbp and placed LB Jamal Adams on IR.” Obviously, nobody wants to see an injury but this is an instance of Minnesota responding to a minus one with a plus one. The focus now shifts toward what Phillips can do inside a purple jersey.
The Vikings Filled Open Roster Spot: CB Bryce Phillips
Think of the Vikings’ secondary as a singular whole rather than being divvied up into two different positions.
DC Brian Flores doesn’t appear overly concerned about position titles and the perceived limitations that accompany whatever is normal for those spots. A corner who can play free safety will get tasked with doing so; a safety who can play along the edge will do so. Move through the various positions and Coach Flores will consistently demonstrate a willingness to task his players with unusual responsibilities.
Rolling with Bryce Phillips to replace Jamal Adams makes sense within that broader consideration of the defensive backs. Losing a versatile safety hurts. Quite possibly, part of the adjustment means emphasizing a nickel package with three corners rather than three safeties. Beefing up the corner spot is part of that approach.
Bryce Phillips went undrafted in the 2026 NFL Draft despite tossing up a very promising 8.58 RAS. He played his ball for San Diego State. Once upon a time, Kevin O’Connell played quarterback for the same school. Kansas City scooped him on a three-year deal that saw a whopping $267,500 included as guaranteed money, per Over the Cap.
The Chiefs’ website considered the overall haul of UDFA talents by offering a quick blurb for each player. Consider the assessment of Bryce Phillips:
A two-year starter for the Aztecs, Phillips was on the field for at least 700 defensive snaps (and 350 coverage snaps) in each of the last two seasons. He recorded seven pass-breakups and two interceptions in that time.
Primarily a wide cornerback at San Diego State, the 5-foot-11, 202-pound Phillips began his career at Tennessee State, where he played for two seasons from 2022-23.
In all likelihood, the Vikings could only clear out roster room for a half dozen corners. Of those six possible spots, there are four certainties. All of Byron Murphy Jr., Isaiah Rodgers, and James Pierre are getting onto the final team. Next up is rookie Chuck Demmings, somebody who has picked up a lot of fans since getting drafted in the 5th Round of the 2026 NFL Draft. He’s looking like the CB4.
Next up is a collection of roster talent that’s trying to prove worthy of one of those final spots. Think Zemaiah Vaughn, Dwight McGlothern, and various others. Bryce Phillips needs to prove more promising than most of these guys to get onto the 53-man roster.
Moreover, there’s the safety talent to consider. Unless there’s a trade, Josh Metellus, Theo Jackson, Jay Ward, and Jakobe Thomas are getting onto the team. Tavierre Thomas appears quite likely to, as well, since he demanded a pretty good contract. What about Kahlef Hailassie and Jacob Thomas? It’s a less obvious connection, but the safety talent makes the roster battle tougher for Phillips.
Bryce Phillips is listed by the Minnesota Vikings as being 6’0″ and 195 pounds. He’ll need to prove helpful on specials while demonstrating promise on defense. Do that and he’s got a chance to make the final team.
The Vikings will host the Ravens for joint practices in a couple days.

India suffered a huge setback in their Men’s Hockey World Cup 2026 campaign as they slumped to a 2-4 loss against England in their Pool D clash on Monday. India were heading 2-1 at half-time but they ended up conceding three second-half goals to suffer a disappointing loss. Nicholas Bandurak handed England the lead before Harmanpreet Singh and Dilpreet Singh mounted a brilliant fightback for India. However, Stuart Rushmere and henry Croft scored to take back the lead for England and Bandurak’s second made it 4-2. India now have 3 points from 2 matches and will face Pakistan next.
India’s qualification scenarios explained
India will have to avoid defeat against Pakistan as a loss can result in elimination. Currently, England are at the top of the table with 6 points while India are second with 3. Pakistan and Wales have 1 point each from 2 matches.
The top two teams of each Pool will move on to the second round while the bottom two will playing in 9th–16th classification matches. If India lose their match against Pakistan, they will surely be eliminated irrespective of other results.
If India play out a draw against Pakistan, they will have to hope that Wales either draw or lose against England. However, if Wales beat England and India are held by Pakistan, the second spot in the points table will be decided by goal difference.
How the match unfolded
Defensive lapses proved costly as India went down 2-4 to England in their second pool match of the men’s Hockey World Cup here on Sunday, leaving the Harmanpreet Singh-led side needing to avoid a defeat against arch-rivals Pakistan.
India, who had beaten Wales 3-1 in their opening match, staged a strong comeback to lead 2-1 at half-time in the Pool D match, but were completely outplayed in the third quarter, conceding two goals, before world No. 3 England added another in the final quarter.
Nicholas Bandaruk scored twice for England (14th and 55th minutes), while Stuart Rushmere (39th) and Henry Croft (43rd) were the other scorers for the winners.
Harmanpreet Singh (17th) and Dilpreet Singh (25th) scored India’s goals.

On Sunday night she anchored the British 4 x 100 Mixed Relay gold medal winning team that set a new European Record of 39.97 seconds, having already taken gold in the 100m, 200, and 4 x 100m Relay earlier this week.
Her compatriot Dina Asher-Smith became the most decorated athlete in European Athletics Championships history when winning gold as part of the 4 x 100m Mixed Relay team.
Women’s Javelin gold went to Croatia’s Sara Kolak with 62.43m, Frederik Ruppert of Germany won the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase in a time of 8:25.33, with Luxembourg taking a silver medal via Ruben Querinjean (8:25.61).
In a tight an exciting Women’s Long Jump Final, only 2cm separated the three medallists. Gold went to Italian Larissa Iapichino with a best jump of 7.00m, Briton Jazmin Sawyers got silver with 6.99m, a season’s best for her, while French athlete Hilary Kpatcha took bronze with 6.98m.
Sweden’s Armand Duplantis set a new Championship Record of 6.15m in winning a fourth straight European title, while Italy topped the medals table.
India made a perfect start as the BWF World Championships returned to the country after 17 years, with all five home entries in action on Monday advancing to the second round at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
The opening day produced victories across men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles for the hosts, but it was 21-year-old Ayush Shetty who provided the defining moment.
The Asian Championships silver medallist stunned top seed and defending champion Shi Yuqi of China 21-14, 13-21, 21-19 in an hour and 13 minutes, overcoming a 0-3 head-to-head record against the world No. 1.
Former world champion P V Sindhu began her campaign with a comfortable straight-game win, while M R Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan progressed in men’s doubles after their Irish opponents retired. Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand and Kavipriya Selvam-Simran Singhi completed India’s unbeaten Day 1 in women’s doubles.
Shetty’s result was also historic for the tournament, with Shi becoming the first defending men’s singles world champion to exit in the opening round.
How did Ayush Shetty stun world No. 1 Shi Yuqi?
Shetty showed little sign of being overawed by either the occasion or his opponent in the opening game.
Playing from the more favourable side of the court, the Indian capitalised on a series of errors from Shi and built an 11-5 advantage at the interval. His attacking game, particularly his smashes, kept the Chinese player under pressure as Shetty took the first game 21-14.
The conditions played a greater role after the change of ends. Shi found more control in the second game and forced the Indian into errors to win 21-13 and take the contest into a decider.
Shetty responded by slowing the exchanges and choosing his attacking opportunities more carefully. He led 11-5 at the change of ends in the third game and then won seven points in succession during a spell that took him to a commanding 16-5 advantage.
Shi, however, produced a late recovery. Better control at the net and deceptive strokes disrupted Shetty’s rhythm, helping the top seed narrow the deficit to 18-15.
The Indian eventually earned five match points with a down-the-line smash. Shi saved the first four, increasing the pressure on the home favourite, before Shetty converted his fifth opportunity to complete the upset.
“I was telling myself to calm down. I was getting a bit nervous because he was really catching up. The momentum was with him and everything I did, he somehow managed to retrieve. So I think I was trying to calm down and, you know, be aggressive,” Shetty said.
Japan’s Yushi Tanaka produced the other notable men’s singles upset of the day, beating China’s 16th seed Weng Hong Yang 21-17, 21-14.
How did Sindhu begin her World Championships campaign?
Sindhu encountered few problems against Ireland’s Sophia Noble, winning 21-7, 21-11 to move into the second round.
The ninth-seeded Indian established control almost immediately, racing to an 8-0 lead in the opening game. Her command at the net helped her close out the game in just 12 minutes.
Noble provided greater resistance after the change of ends and attempted to stretch the rallies by pushing Sindhu deep towards the forehand side.
Sindhu nevertheless remained in control. With the score at 12-10, she won eight consecutive points to reach 20-10 before completing the victory shortly afterwards.
For Sindhu, the first-round match was also an opportunity to understand the conditions at the venue before tougher contests later in the competition.
“I think overall, playing for the first time, it was important for me to get used to the court conditions and see how it is. Today, I think that was the first thing for me that came into my mind. But I think I managed it well and the court conditions are pretty good,” Sindhu said.
She will face Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang in the second round.
How did India’s doubles teams perform on Day 1?
India’s first success of the day came through M R Arjun and Hariharan Amsakarunan in men’s doubles.
The pair won the opening game 21-16 against Ireland’s Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds and were leading 6-4 in the second when their opponents retired.
Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand followed with a convincing performance in women’s doubles. They defeated Spain’s Paula Lopez and Lucia Rodriguez 21-9, 21-13 without being seriously threatened.
Kavipriya Selvam and Simran Singhi had to work considerably harder against Spain’s Nikol Carulla and Carmen Maria Jimenez.
The Indian pair trailed 17-20 in the opening game and faced three game points, but produced a five-point run to turn the game around and take it 22-20. They carried that momentum into the second game and won it 21-14 to complete India’s fifth victory of the day.
Which other leading players advanced?
Among the leading men’s singles contenders, fourth seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark defeated Azerbaijan’s Dicky Dwi Pangestu 21-19, 21-17.
Japan’s 10th seed Kodai Naraoka needed three games to get past Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu Jen, winning 21-16, 7-21, 21-12.
In women’s singles, world No. 1 An Se Young of South Korea defeated Bulgaria’s Kaloyana Nalbantova 21-14, 21-13.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has ordered the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect following the team’s disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
The NFF announced the decision in a brief statement on its official X account.
“Notice! The Executive Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation has asked members of the technical crew of the Super Falcons to step down with immediate effect.”
The decision comes days after Nigeria’s title defence in Morocco ended at the quarter-final stage following a defeat to Cameroon.
The Super Falcons went into the tournament as defending champions and one of Africa’s strongest women’s teams. However, they were unable to reach the semi-finals after losing to Cameroon.
Nigeria had won the previous WAFCON title in dramatic fashion, coming from two goals down to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final.
The latest defeat also affected Nigeria’s route to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Their quarter-final exit meant they missed out on automatic qualification through a top-four finish and had to go through the play-off route.
The Super Falcons later suffered another setback against South Africa, ending their hopes of securing an automatic World Cup place and raising fresh questions about the team’s technical direction.
NFF Decision Comes Amid Football Uncertainty
The NFF’s decision comes at a difficult time for Nigerian football administration, with the National Sports Commission also moving against the federation’s planned electoral congress and considering a normalisation committee.
The change in the Super Falcons’ technical crew now leaves the NFF with the task of finding a new coaching set-up for one of Nigeria’s most successful national teams.
The Super Falcons remain Africa’s record holders with 10 recognised WAFCON titles and have featured at every FIFA Women’s World Cup since the competition began in 1991.
Cameroon, meanwhile, went on to win their first WAFCON title after beating Malawi 3-0 in the final.
The NFF has not yet announced who will replace the departing technical crew or when a new coach will be appointed.
The next appointment will face major pressure as Nigeria looks to rebuild the Super Falcons and restore their position at the top of African women’s football.
Golfers have been golfing since the end of July, while girls tennis players have been playing since Aug. 7, and soccer opened its season statewide with Futbol Friday Night Aug. 14.
Volleyball gets underway this week starting Aug. 17, and the first regular season Friday night football games will be Aug. 21. Cross country starts running officially during the week of Aug. 24.

NFL defensive back Sam Webb appeared to hang up his cleats after playing one preseason game with the New York Giants this season.
The Giants placed Webb on the Reserve/Retired List on Sunday, one day after New York lost to the Minnesota Vikings. The Giants signed Webb on Thursday, and he only had one practice with the team going into the preseason affair.

Webb, 28, was a standout at Missouri Western State before he turned pro. He joined the Las Vegas Raiders in 2022, playing in 17 games for them and recording 36 tackles with three pass break-ups. He had a stint with the Carolina Panthers in 2023 before re-joining the Raiders in 2024.
In his second stint in Las Vegas, Webb played in 11 games and had one tackle. He found himself with the Cleveland Browns in 2025. He played in seven games, had eight tackles and returned a fumble for a touchdown.

Webb played 14 snaps in the Giants’ preseason game against the Vikings. But it appeared it was more than enough for him. He had joined the Giants five days after being released by the Denver Broncos.
The Giants are hoping their secondary can turn around after a middle-of-the-road season in 2025. New York was 16th in pass defense with about 214 passing yards allowed per game.

IND vs SL 1st Test: Suthar, Jadeja spin India into commanding 178-run lead over Sri Lanka in Galle
India’s spinners tightened their grip on the first Test against Sri Lanka as Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja combined for seven wickets to bowl the hosts out for 284 on a rain-hit third day in Galle on Monday. Sri Lanka’s resistance, led by a maiden international hundred from Sonal Dinusha and a composed 80 from Niroshan Dickwella, prevented India from forcing an even bigger advantage, but the visitors still secured a substantial 178-run first-innings lead.
India had appeared on course for a much shorter innings when Sri Lanka slipped to 99/5 by lunch. Suthar spearheaded the early assault with flight, dip and turn, while the Indian attack maintained relentless pressure on a pitch that continued to offer enough assistance to the spinners.
But Dinusha and Dickwella changed the complexion of the innings with a superb sixth-wicket partnership. The pair added 146 runs from 216 balls, frustrating India through a combination of patience, disciplined shot selection and effective use of the sweep.
Dinusha, Dickwella delay Sri Lanka collapse
Unlike several of Sri Lanka’s top-order batters, Dinusha and Dickwella refused to attack deliveries away from their bodies and were willing to wait for scoring opportunities. Both used the sweep effectively against the Indian spinners, repeatedly finding runs from around the stumps.
Dickwella brought up his half-century from 67 balls, while Dinusha took 92 deliveries to reach the milestone. Their partnership extended into the second session, with Sri Lanka adding 116 runs without losing a wicket.
India eventually broke through early in the final session. Dickwella, who had been dropped on 20 by KL Rahul at slip off Suthar, edged Prasidh Krishna through to wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant after reaching 80 off 115 balls.
Dinusha continued to frustrate the visitors, completing his maiden international century from 167 balls. His resistance, however, lasted only one more delivery. Jadeja trapped him leg before wicket, ending a remarkable 100-run innings off 168 balls.
The partnership had showcased a vastly different approach from Sri Lanka’s top order, whose aggressive strokeplay often saw them driving away from their bodies and finding Indian fielders.

Suthar leads spin assault
India’s bowlers had made the breakthrough almost immediately after their first innings ended at 462. Sri Lanka needed a strong opening partnership but instead lost Nishan Fernando to Siraj with only the second ball of the innings.
Suthar then made an immediate impact with his first delivery, finding a faint edge from Dinesh Chandimal that nestled safely in Pant’s gloves. The young left-arm spinner continued to trouble the batters with impressive control, consistently bowling above 85 kmph while extracting turn and dip.
Lahiru Udara and Kamindu Mendis briefly threatened to stabilise the innings, with both finding boundaries and Mendis pulling Prasidh for a six. But Suthar eventually removed Udara, who mistimed a swish to gully.
Mendis then fell to Kuldeep Yadav after an uppish push was brilliantly held by a diving Shubman Gill. Jadeja joined the wicket-takers by dismissing Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva for 21, feathering an edge through to Rahul at slip.
Suthar finished with 4/76, while Jadeja claimed 3/57, underlining India’s dominance with spin. Sri Lanka’s late resistance ensured the lead did not become overwhelming, but India remain firmly in command after a third day repeatedly interrupted by rain.

Perhaps the top news of the week is that the Vikings host the Ravens. To begin, there will be a pair of joint practices. These days are tremendous fun for anybody who gets out since there are roughly 180 NFL players and a pair of coaching staffs all working on the same collection of football fields. And then there’s the game inside of U.S. Bank Stadium, further allowing for more insight to be gleaned. Being able to offer some firsthand observations is what’s to come for our readers.

The Vikings Host the Ravens in Preseason Week No. 2
Since the summer of 2020, I’ve been writing about the Minnesota Vikings. What has followed since has been a wild ride.

I went full time with Vikings writing and editing in the summer of 2021. The overwhelming majority of my work since then has been tossed onto Vikings Territory and PurplePTSD. No shortage of digital ink has been spilled since then covering the Vikings. Normally, the work has been done from afar (Canada).
Over the past couple years, I’ve been fortunate to get some credentialed access to the Vikings. Doing so allows for some firsthand insight that can remove the middle man.
The hope, then, is to send along some Vikings writing that’s worth your time. Online publishers are sorting through the turmoil of industry changes but many of you out there have continued supporting VT. That means a ton to us as a small business that is local to the Twin Cities (the business is local; I’m international).
Of top importance will be the passer battle that has been decided. Kyler Murray is the QB1. Can he shine against what is a formidable group over in Baltimore? Whatever takes place against the Ravens is sure to be handled with aplomb as nothing gets pushed out of proportion.
But then there are a pile of other stories to monitor for the Vikings. How does young defensive tackle Caleb Banks do? The receiver competition is heating up beyond the top trio of options; can Myles Price keep up his sizzling effort? All of the sudden, the safety position offers some reason for concern due to the Jamal Adams news. Who steps up?
Oh, and the Vikings still employ that J.J. McCarthy guy. He could use some excellent days.
As has been mentioned in the past, making a habit of visiting Vikings Territory means a lot to us. Genuinely. Doing so helps to keep the lights on since we’re in the click business.
