The Vikings’ Next Opponent Just Got Hit with an Uppercut

Published

on

Maybe firing the GM will function as the spark to light a fire under a talented Indianapolis Colts team. Maybe it’s too little, too late.

Regardless, the news: the Vikings’ next opponent just canned its general manager. Gone is Chris Ballard, per Tom Pelissero.

Check out the update from the plugged-in league insider: “The Colts fired GM Chris Ballard.” Simple and declarative. Not long afterwards, Pelissero clarified that head coach Shane Steichen is still calling the shots and that Ed Dodds would be taking over as the leader in the front office.

The Vikings’ Next Opponent Hit with Wake Up Call

Recent years have seen the Vikings and Colts as odd bedfellows.

Consider, for instance, the competition over the same personnel. During the 2025 offseason, the Vikings and Colts battled for C Ryan Kelly, RG Will Fries, and QB Daniel Jones in the free agency bidding war. The AFC team snagged the passer while the pair of linemen went to the NFC team. Another connection rests in Camryn Bynum, a well-paid safety who got his career’s second chapter rolling in Indianapolis.

Looking at the Colts’ roster more broadly sees other former Vikings putting in work in the state of Indiana, such as WR Laquon Treadwell and DL Jerry Tillery.

Cam Bynum celebrates after a defensive stop for the Colts against the Packers at Lucas Oil Stadium.

A notable area where the teams have diverged has been in success for the 2026 season. The Vikings are a pristine 5-0 while the Colts are an eyesore at 2-4. Part of what’s creating an issue for Indianapolis is that they just fell to the Tennessee Titans, a team that hadn’t won going into the Week 6 game.

So, the Colts made a change.

Some of the guys on the roster — and certainly those on the coaching staff — will see the firing as reason to shape up. Failing to do so could involved getting shipped out. Do some of the veterans on that Colts roster want to get shipped out?

Of the players whom Nick Korte identifies above, LG Quenton Nelson and and RB Jonathan Taylor really jump off the page. So do DT DeForest Buckner alongside TE Mo Alie-Cox. Good players, all of ’em. At this stage, Taylor could boast the highest upside but either of the linemen would be a nice get. What of making a move for Bynum? The center fielder would address the weakest spot on that Brian Flores defense.

The Vikings are sitting in a somewhat tricky spot going into the Week 7 game.

Coming off a bye, Minnesota will be rested. That’s obviously a good thing. However, the potential exists that the momentum has been cutoff and that Indianapolis rolls into the game highly motivated. Could the Vikings be walking into a buzzsaw of an opponent?

Kickoff for the Vikings and Colts game is scheduled for 12;00 p.m. on Sunday, October 25th. Overcoming the AFC foe may coincide with getting a closer look at the veteran talent who could be had in a possible trade ahead of the November 10th NFL trade deadline.

Does Defense Win Championships? The Vikings May Find Out

Published

on

Heading into their bye week, the 5-0 Vikings had the top scoring defense in the league. Measured by EPA, they are in contention to be one of the greatest defenses in NFL history.

Can the Vikings’ Defense Win ‘Em a Super Bowl?

The offense is a different story. The team ranks 22nd in the NFL in points scored per game, and they’ve somehow scored even fewer points per game when QB1 Kyler Murray has been healthy.

An old adage says that defense wins championships. This would be great news for the Vikings, but is it true?

NFL: Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints

To begin, it is well-established that defense is not as stable as offense in the NFL. In other words, a high-achieving defense like the Vikings’ is more likely to regress over the remainder of the season than a high-achieving offense like the Bills’. This raises a legitimate question about the Vikings’ ability to sustain their defensive success.

That said, after three seasons of increasing excellence from the Brian Flores defense, it’s hard to believe that the defense is just going to fall apart. If the defense is able to maintain their position atop the NFL, how realistic is a Vikings Super Bowl in 2026?

To study this, I looked at the offensive and defensive scoring ranks for every Super Bowl winner since 2002:

image

A few things stand out: first, the number 1 defense in the NFL has won the Super Bowl five times, while the number 1 offense has won it just twice. In recent history, defense really has won championships.

Brian Flores

The worst offensive rank for a number 1, Super Bowl champion defense was 20, achieved by the 2008 Pittsburgh Steelers. At 22nd, the Vikings likely need to show offensive improvement if they want to hoist the Lombardi trophy, but such an accomplishment would not be unprecedented.

Another thing that stands out from the data is how rarely the top offenses/defenses actually win the Super Bowl.

Let us define a team’s Combined Rank to be the sum of their offensive and defensive ranks (for instance, the Vikings’ current Combined Rank is 23=22+1). If offense and defense were completely uncorrelated (which is approximately true in the modern NFL), the best team in the NFL would, on average, have a Combined Rank of around 7 or 8.

In the past 24 seasons, however, the average Combined Rank of a Super Bowl champion has been a whopping 15.7. The worst offenders are the 2011 Giants (with a Combined Rank of 34) and the 2007 Giants (with a Combined Rank of 31). The success of these teams shows that, in a sense, any playoff team is a Super Bowl contender: when it comes to the NFL postseason, all you need is a chip and a chance.

Having said that, the plot above does seem to suggest that most Super Bowl teams have either an elite offense, defense, or both (as evidenced by the number of data points located along the axes). 12 of the last 24 Super Bowl champions had either top 2 offense or a top 2 defense, suggesting that one elite unit often compensates for modest performance on the other side of the ball.

The Vikings currently rank 3rd in the NFL in point differential, showing that their excellent defense (and special teams) have more than made up for their offensive woes so far.

The Vikings have benefitted from a relatively easy schedule so far, and things will get much more challenging when they welcome the Bills and 49ers in November. Still, elite teams beat up on bad ones, and that’s exactly what the Vikings have done so far. There’s plenty of football left to be played, but their defensive performance thus far makes it clear: the Vikings are a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

NFL Week 6 grades for every team: Browns take AFC North lead, Colts collapse

Published

Welcome to the Week 6 grades!

You know the NFL season has been turned upside down when the Cleveland Browns are in first place, and that’s exactly what we have after their wild comeback win over the Ravens. It was a wild week in the AFC North, which is suddenly looking like the best division in the NFL.

  • The Browns used a fourth-quarter comeback to beat the Ravens 13-10, and thanks to the win, Cleveland is now in first place. This marks the first time in 12 YEARS that the Browns have been in first place after Week 6.
  • Pittsburgh also pulled out a wild comeback. The Steelers were down by 13 points against the Buccaneers before surging back to beat Tampa Bay in overtime. It was the Steelers’ largest fourth-quarter comeback since 2002.
  • As for the Ravens, their loss to the Browns marked the 15th time since 2020 that they’ve blown a fourth-quarter lead of seven points or more. Not only is that the most blown leads in the NFL in that span, but no other team even has 10. Yikes.

How rough is the AFC North? The Bengals (3-2) were tied for second place going into their Week 6 bye, and after everything that happened on Sunday, they’re now in last place.

Let’s get to the Week 6 grades, starting with Cleveland’s win over Baltimore.

Browns 13-10 over Ravens

Packers (4-2) 23-13 over Cowboys (2-4)

Bills (5-1) 33-30 over Raiders (3-3)

Chiefs (5-0) 22-6 over Chargers (0-6)

Cardinals (2-4) 18-16 over Rams (2-4)

Bears (4-2) 31-23 over Falcons (2-4)

Panthers (3-2) 25-14 over Eagles (2-4)

Steelers (4-2) 26-19 (OT) over Buccaneers (1-5)

Saints (2-4) 34-27 Giants (3-2-1)

Patriots (4-2) 26-19 over Jets (2-4)

Titans (1-5) 26-20 over Colts (2-4)

Texans (2-4) 34-31 over Jaguars (4-2) in London

Broncos 17-14 (OT) over Seahawks

NFL – Texans v Jaguars – Live on Virgin Media Two

Published

on

Jaguars

For the third consecutive week, the NFL will play a regular season game in London as the Texans and Jaguars meet at Wembley Stadium.

Jacksonville defeated Philadelphia, 19-17, at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London last week while Houston earned their first win of the season with a 26-3 win at Tennessee.

The Jaguars lead the NFL in rushing defence this season and became the second team in the Super Bowl era to not allow an opposing player to rush for 40-or-more yards in their first five games of a season, joining the 1969 Dallas Cowboys.

This week, Jacksonville can tie the 1998-2000 Baltimore Ravens (23 consecutive games) for the third-longest streak of consecutive games without allowing an opposing player to rush for 75-or-more yards in the Super Bowl era.

Houston defensive end Will Anderson leads the NFL with 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss this season and is one of three players with at least 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss in his team’s first five games of a season since 2000.

The AFC South rivals met twice last season, with the Jaguars winning 17-10 at their home venue of Everbank Stadium, before the Texans avenged that defeat with a 36-29 victory at NRG Stadium.

Last season, both teams reached the play-offs, with the Jaguars losing at home to Buffalo Bills in the wild card round. The Texans lost out to the New England Patriots in the divisional round.

Live coverage today on Virgin Media Two starts at 2.25pm, with the game kicking off at 2.30pm.

FIFA chief Infantino apologises for World Cup row, fails to appease critics | Football News

Published

on

1786016014 7419

Gianni Infantino gave an apology to the toughest critics who want to oust him as FIFA president but no new details or documents on issues that most concern them at a showdown meeting of the ruling council of soccer’s governing body on Thursday.

Infantino provided no documents about the $4.2 billion World Cup sell-off plan he launched and quickly dropped in July.

Nor did he give details to explain the Folarin Balogun red-card case at the World Cup or how U.S. President Donald Trump intervened to help the national team forward.

FIFA will, however, review whether to continue awarding the peace prize that was created to give to Trump last December.

Infantino was pressed by European soccer officials for written evidence about his secretive private equity plan for the World Cup with investor Joshua Kushner, which provoked a global rift and the biggest crisis of his near 11-year presidency.

He frustrated them further by asking for written questions, FIFA vice president Debbie Hewitt said after the 3 1/2-hour meeting that is the last before a Nov. 18 deadline to field an election candidate to challenge him.

“The man has to answer those questions. If he doesn’t answer those questions, no, he is not fit to be the FIFA president,” said Hewitt, who leads the English Football Association.

Infantino did not meet with media at FIFA headquarters Thursday.

Euro officials seek answers and allies to pressure InfantinoEuropean soccer’s ruling body UEFA is leading attempts to remove Infantino before or at the FIFA presidential election in March and heard little to change that view Thursday.

“No satisfactory answers were provided,” said German soccer leader Bernd Neuendorf, one of eight UEFA delegates in the 37-member FIFA Council that Infantino chairs.

The council is the main decision-making body at FIFA with a global spread of officials – most are presidents of their national federation, like Cindy Parlow Cone of the U.S. – who are elected by their continental soccer bodies for four-year terms.

FIFA pays each an annual stipend of $250,000, with $300,000 for the continental presidents.

Infantino infuriated soccer leaders in Europe, North America and Asia by working for months in secret on the Kushner plan. It deepened a long-standing perception in UEFA that the FIFA boss plans his biggest projects without consulting them.

“We need a person of integrity, someone who can be expected to restore the reputation of the association, which has undoubtedly been lost,” Neuendorf told reporters.

Infantino did start the meeting by apologizing to his Council colleagues for blindsiding them and creating a furor over his private investor plan with Kushner that was revealed in media reports nine days after the World Cup final in July.

“He said that with some contrition,” Hewitt said.

Support for Infantino comes from AfricaFor most of the last 50 years, FIFA voters from Africa – which now counts 54 of the 211 member federations – have been key to gaining and staying in power.

“The key point for us,” said FIFA Council member Ahmed Yahya, the head of Mauritania’s soccer federation, “is that we see Gianni as the right person to continue leading football.” Infantino’s offer to add $15 million in FIFA funding to each of the 211 members over the next four years made progress Thursday.

“I’ve said that President Gianni Infantino is taking football forward worldwide,” Yahya said. “I come from the African continent and know what I’m talking about.

The FIFA presidential election meeting is on March 18 in Rabat, Morocco – a political ally of Infantino, whose soccer leader Fouzi Lekjaa is an influential council member and which will co-host the 2030 World Cup.

Next FIFA Council in Qatar which is supporting InfantinoThe FIFA Council should next meet on Dec. 16 in Doha, Qatar – the 2022 World Cup host that still is loyal to Infantino.

Another ally is Azerbaijan – whose most senior soccer official Elkhan Mammadov is an aide in Infantino’s inner circle – which will host a global boys’ tournament for under-15 teams later this month. That event shapes to be a lobbying opportunity for his campaign.

FIFA also will host an online extra congress on Nov. 23 – five days after the candidate deadline – to confirm hosts for the Women’s World Cup in 2031 and 2035. The only bids are a U.S.-Mexico-Costa Rica-Jamaica plan for 2031 and the four British federations for 2035.

UEFA pursues legal action against FIFA, Infantino and Kushner in the U.S.UEFA also has asked courts in the United States for the right to get evidence for a criminal complaint against Infantino in Switzerland. The court filings allege possible mismanagement of FIFA finances in the value he put on the intended subsidiary running tournament commercial rights.

It was to be at least 20% owned by investors led by Kushner, the brother of Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

FIFA lawyers’ filings in response to stall or stop the evidence requests said they were a “smear campaign” by UEFA.

A Wacky Vikings Rumor is on Life Support (But Somehow Still Possible)

Published

on

Once upon a time, there was a Vikings rumor connecting Minnesota to Justin Herbert. The idea is close to certain to being just that: an idea.

The Los Angeles Chargers are moving through a terrible season as an 0-5 football team. Jim Harbaugh and Mike McDaniel are leading a horrible offense that’s averaging 16.8 points per game, 30th in the NFL. Meanwhile, Kyler Murray has failed to fully lock down the QB1 job. What happens if these trends continue for the remainder of the 2026 season?

A Vikings Rumors Not Dead Yet

Some respected NFL voices have noted the possibility of a Herbert trade, at least in a general sense. Consider ESPN’s Benjamin Solak:

Consider, as well, the quick quip from Sam Monson, who insists that LA possibly moving on from Herbert “becomes really interesting only if/when [the Chargers] finish with a catastrophic record & have a top 5 draft pick in a draft that may be loaded at QB.”

Neither Solak nor Monson are looping the Vikings into the mix. The point here is just to note that respected NFL voices are discussing a possible divorce between the Chargers and Justin Herbert.

On FanSided, Christopher Kline jumps into a possible Vikings and Chargers trade. The offer is for Minnesota to send over Carson Wentz, a 1st, 2nd, and 4th. Los Angeles sends over Herbert and a 5th.

Some of the rationale: “Minnesota currently has the NFL’s top defense and its worst offense. That needs to change if the Vikings want to meaningfully compete when the playoffs roll around.”

Truth be told, the proposed offer isn’t anywhere close to being able to demand Herbert. He boasts sensational potential due to his age, size, and abilities. Anything less than multiple 1sts isn’t getting the job done.

The Chargers’ QB is sitting atop a 59.4% completion rate alongside 937 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 7 interceptions. These stats alone point toward somebody who is playing terrible football.

Jones (93) tackles him during the second half at SoFi Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images – Credit: IMAGN IMAGES via Reuters Connect

Keep in mind, though, that Justin Herbert still offers a lot to like.

Chosen at No. 6 in the 2020 NFL Draft, Mr. Herbert stands at 6’6″ and weighs 236 pounds, meaning he boasts an ideal build to play quarterback. In 2025, the passer completed 66.4% of his passes while putting 3,727 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions onto the stat sheet.

At their beefiest, Herbert’s stats show more than 5,000 passing yards and 38 touchdowns, both of which arrived in 2021. A normal Justin Herbert season sees him completing 66.2% of his passes for close to 4,379 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions (PFR).

If, somehow, Herbert gets put on the trade market, the Vikings must put together a lucrative trade offer to pick him up. The chance of that occurring, though, is close to zero. The Chargers are much more likely to clean house by firing the coaching staff than shipping out a legit franchise passer who is still in his prime.

A Young Vikings Receiver is Putting the Front Office in a Tricky Position

Published

on

Vikings receiver Jeshaun Jones has been noticeable out there. That’s a good development for the player and it may put the front office into a tricky spot. His growth creates an even larger logjam at receiver.

The top options at receiver are Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, both of whom have missed time in 2026 due to injury. None of the options for the WR3 job — Jauan Jennings, Tai Felton, and Myles Price — have completely solidified the job. So, too, is there Odell Beckham Jr. to consider. Could Jones still find a way onto the 53-man roster?

3rd-Year Vikings Receiver is Noticeable Out There

Jeshaun Jones has had to work through some early turbulence in his third season. Due to violating the league’s substance abuse policy, Jones got suspended from Week 1 through to Week 3.

In Week 4, Jones got worked into the mix but as a member of the 53-man roster. Afterwards, Minnesota moved on, cutting him from the roster before re-welcoming him into the team’s orbit, albeit on the practice squad. But then they bumped him up in Week 5, a decision that ended up being wise.

Consider Exhibit A:

And Exhibit B:

Do the tally from those plays and it’s a long catch — 32 yards — alongside a fumble recovery in kickoff coverage. Not too bad for a depth receiver who was scraping and clawing for a roster spot in August. Better yet, Jones has had some good special teams reps more broadly, looking physical and fast out there. He has snagged a tackle and looks like a decent option to work as a gunner.

Jones looks like a sneaky candidate to become a WR5 with some upside. Opting for that approach would likely involve moving on from Tai Felton, somebody who has struggled to distinguish himself in his year and change in Minnesota. Myles Price could then get slid into the WR4 job while continuing to be an absolute monster of a returner.

Jeshaun Jones is 26. The young Vikings receiver will look to continue fending off the competition in search of a large portion of the playing time pie.
