Guardians seek clutch hits in series opener vs. Rays
Jul 23, 2026; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Guardians left fielder Steven Kwan (38) hits a single during the third inning against the Minnesota Twins at Progressive Field. Mandatory Credit: Ken Blaze-Imagn Images The Cleveland Guardians will look to put one of their more frustrating losses of the season behind them when they begin a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Rays have the best record in the American League and own a two-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East.
Cleveland lost 3-1 in 12 innings to the visiting Minnesota Twins on Thursday despite a stellar outing by right-hander Gavin Williams, who struck out 11 and allowed two hits and no walks over seven shutout innings.
The Guardians went 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position and were held scoreless aside from Patrick Bailey’s solo homer in the fifth inning.
“Their pitching was just like ours was,” Cleveland manager Stephen Vogt said. “This was a well-pitched game on both sides, and Gavin was unbelievable. That was about as good as we’ve seen from him.”
Rookie right fielder Chase DeLauter drew a fourth-inning walk to extend his career high-tying on-base streak to 15 games for the Guardians, who split the four-game series.
The Guardians used four relievers on Thursday, including right-hander Colin Holderman, who stranded automatic runners in both the 10th and 11th innings.
“When you can put up a scoreless inning in extra innings, you’re doing something, and Holdy did it twice,” Vogt said. “Our bullpen has been phenomenal all year. We just weren’t able to get that big hit.”
Left-hander Joey Cantillo (8-5, 3.74 ERA) will take the mound for the Guardians in the series opener. He allowed four runs over five-plus innings in a 7-1 home loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday.
Cantillo, 26, has recorded at least seven strikeouts in five of his past six starts.
Cantillo is set to make his second career start against Tampa Bay. He tossed five scoreless innings in a 6-1 home win over the Rays on Sept. 14, 2024.
Tampa Bay will counter with Shane McClanahan (8-6, 3.16 ERA), who allowed six runs (four earned) over five innings during a 6-1 road loss to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday.
McClanahan, 29, gave up five hits and three walks while fanning three in his first start since July 8.
“The body felt great. Arm felt great. Obviously, those 10 days (of rest) are great for the body, but really bad for the routine,” McClanahan said. “Just looking forward to getting back to normal and having that routine and getting some things cleaned up.”
McClanahan will face the Guardians for the first time since allowing two runs over seven innings in a 2-1 loss in an AL wild-card-series game on Oct. 7, 2022. His only regular-season outing vs. Cleveland came that same season, and he permitted five runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings during a loss.
Tampa Bay is beginning a nine-game homestand after completing a 3-5 trip against the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays coming out of the All-Star break. The Rays won three straight against Toronto before losing 3-1 on Thursday in the series finale.
“Obviously, you want to win the fourth game and get the sweep, but you’ve still got to be grateful for the three games that you won,” Rays third baseman Junior Caminero said via interpreter Kevin Vera. “We wanted to go home happy, but we’re happy going home with the series (victory).”

Adam Ramsay-Peaty shrugs off bizarre delay to emerge fastest in Commonwealth breaststroke heats
Adam Ramsay-Peaty shrugged off a bizarre delay to power through to the semi-finals of the men’s 100 metres breaststroke event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Ramsay-Peaty’s heat was temporarily halted as he was on the blocks when a lane divider broke off, requiring an official to strip to the waist and enter the pool to reconnect it.
Ramsay-Peaty duly wasted no time in recording the fastest time of the morning, 59.46 seconds, with only two rivals, Australia’s Sam Williamson and Filip Nowacki of Jersey, also finishing in under a minute.
The three-time Olympic champion is taking part in his fourth Commonwealth Games having clinched his first medals as a 19-year-old in Glasgow in 2014.

Since then he has become a fixture of the gossip columns after marrying Holly Ramsay, daughter of celebrity chef Gordon, in December last year, and experiencing a rift with the majority of his family.
Ramsay-Peaty has described these Games as a “full circle moment” as he looks to reignite his career. A silver medal at the Paris Olympics in 2024 helped him refocus after a difficult 2023 in which he withdrew from a series of events in order to focus on mental health concerns.
His win in the 100m in 2014 began eight years of almost total dominance in the event. That streak came to an end in dramatic fashion in Birmingham four years ago when he trailed home in a shock fourth place in the event.
Ramsay-Peaty, who is due to return for his semi-final on Friday evening, told TNT Sports: “Job done, really. We’ve got a busy two weeks coming up, so we’re reserving energy where we can.
“Last time I was here, I was very young. We barely had any world records to my name, or known world records to my name, so it’s been a very long journey.”

Why the Super Falcons Wore 10 Stars on Their Jerseys

Nigeria’s Super Falcons wore a special jersey that had 10 stars around the national team’s badge during their international friendly against Tanzania.
The design caught fans’ attention during the match. ESPN Africa later explained that each of the 10 stars represents one of Nigeria’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) titles.
The Super Falcons are the most successful team in the history of the competition, having won a record 10 continental crowns since the tournament was established.
The symbolic design also reflects the Super Falcons’ ambition to continue building on that legacy as they chase an 11th WAFCON title in future editions of the tournament.

Jurgen Klopp unveiled as new Germany coach: ‘I’m gone the day you don’t want me anymore’
Germany have unveiled Jurgen Klopp as the new head coach of the national team, following the departure of Julian Nagelsmann after the disappointment of the 2026 World Cup, when Germany were knocked out by Paraguay in the round of 32. Klopp, who left Liverpool ahead of the summer 2024 and since worked as RedBull’s head of soccer, started a new chapter of his incredible career and will be leading the German national team at the 2028 UEFA Euro and at the 2030 World Cup and seems willing to be on the job for even longer.
“The day you don’t want me anymore, I’m gone, without any severance pay. If you say tomorrow that he’s rubbish, I’m gone. Not just one person, it would have to be more than that. If the federation says he’s rubbish, I’m gone. If you behave badly and don’t leave my family in peace, I’m gone. Criticize me if something doesn’t work. I’m happy to work on it. It’s all about the job. Klopp doesn’t have a career after the national team. Ideally, this is the highlight of my career,” he said.
Klopp also said he’s ready to make changes in the national team and also on German soccer.
“I want to get very involved in the structures. Whoever brings in Jurgen, gets Jurgen. Everyone is happy today, but I’m not sure if that will be the case every day. I want to improve everything. I want to present the German national team in a positive light, so that we can eventually get back to the top. I’m looking forward to the challenge,” he said.
He also spoke on the players and how he wants to make an impact on some of them, looking to find stability and then, they hope, dominance on the global stage. Since winning the 2014 World Cup, the Germans crashed out in the group stages of 2018 and 2022 before the shock defeat to Paraguay in the round of 32 this past summer.
“Players will get opportunities they might not even be expecting right now, because I like to be bold. I’m keen to work with guys who want to play a style of football that everyone enjoys. It’s not always immediately successful, but I also want to achieve something with the national team that makes people go home and think, ‘Wow, that was really cool.’ A few things are needed to achieve that. Everyone who is eligible to play for the national team should give their all. I’ll be watching. Nobody is being written off today. It’s a fresh start,” he said.
“Success is how you perform in relation to the expectations. When we ask in Germany: are we as good as France? And the answer is no, that’s not true. The question should be: do we have players like Dembele, Mbappe, Doue, Barcola? The answer is no. But we still can beat them. It’s not important to look at France, Spain, Argentina. The most important thing is to look at ourselves and how we play football. We aren’t number one in the world at the moment, that’s true. There are 11 nations ahead of us in the ranking — but we have to make beating them possible, with the way we play football.
“Luckily, the first game isn’t tomorrow. I’d be overwhelmed. I’ll be watching games in every country where our players are, including here in Germany, of course. I’ve gained a tremendous amount of insight lately. Maintaining contact with the players is very important, and I’ll try to get in touch with them early on. That will be my first task.”
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf also confirmed that the staff will consist of Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and Sven Bender and it’s also confirmed that Per Mertesacker will replace Andreas Rettig as DFB managing director at the end of the year.

What time is Tyson Fury fight? Mariusz Wach Ring walk start time, undercard and where to watch today
Tyson Fury is back in the ring today, competing in a warm-up fight for his long-awaited showdown with Anthony Joshua.
In Thailand, where Fury has trained over the last year, the “Gypsy King” will box former world-title challenger Mariusz Wach, one night before “AJ” takes on Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia.
• Fury vs Wach LIVE: Follow along with the Independent
Should Fury and his fellow Briton pass these tests, they will finally square off later this year, with a November meeting at Wembley Stadium on the cards – provided the fight takes place in the early hours of the morning, apparently.

Some might argue that Fury, 37, has already had a warm-up bout for his planned fight with Joshua; in April, Fury ended his fifth retirement from boxing and outpointed Arslanbek Makhmudov in Tottenham.
But the former world heavyweight champion wants to go again, facing Wach in a fight whose proceeds will go to charity, according to Fury. Here’s all you need to know:
When is the fight?
Fury vs Wach will take place on Friday 24 July at Max Muay Thai Stadium in Pattaya, Thailand. The main card is believed to begin at 3.15pm BST (7.15am PT / 9.15am CT / 10.15am ET), with main-event ring walks then likely at 5pm BST (9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET).
How can I watch it?
Fury has said: “This great fight will not be streamed live! It will only be broadcast on my hit Netflix TV show ‘At Home With The Furys’ season three.” There is currently no release date for that season. The Independent will provide live updates from the event, however.
Odds
Fury – 1/50
Wach – 25/1

Tony Khan Finally Addresses Huge Adam Page Decision; Shares Update On Hangman’s Immediate AEW Future
Hangman Adam Page is the heart and soul of AEW. His last match in the company took place at Revolution 2026 against MJF in a Texas D*ath match. This was one of the most brutal showdowns in All Elite Wrestling history.
Former AEW World Champion MJF successfully defended his title against Hangman Adam Page at Revolution. Due to this loss, the latter lost the right to challenge for the World Title again. He went on a hiatus after this match but made an amazing return on the July 11 episode of Collision. The 34-year-old delivered a promo where he said that he will pursue other singles titles in the promotion.
Tony Khan revealed some interesting information about the former World Champion in the recent AEW Redemption media call. He said that Hangman is expected to return soon. Furthermore, he confirmed that the wrestler is going to stick to his words and not challenge for the World Title again.
“Well, I think we’ll see Hangman again very soon. We saw Hangman two weeks ago on Collision. This past week on Collision, they referenced it during some of the championship fights and the big stakes on Collision. We saw Hangman on the show last week. When’s he going to be back? I would expect him to be back soon….He’s going to be a man of his word that he said if he didn’t regain the championship from MJF, that Hangman would not challenge for that World Championship again, and it seems that Hangman is absolutely going to live up to his word because he has told me and has also publicly told all of you he’s going to come back to AEW very soon, and to be in line to challenge for the other championships,” said Khan. Klopp named new head coach of Germany men’s football team
The German Football Association (DFB) has appointed Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the national team on Friday, ending speculation about who would succeed Julian Nagelsmann.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said the association’s governing bodies had unanimously approved Klopp’s appointment, describing him as the “ideal choice” for the role.
“It is a great honor to sit here today,” Klopp said at the press conference announcing his appointment, adding he was “delighted.”
What else do we know about Klopp’s appointment as Germany head coach?
Klopp emerged as the federation’s preferred candidate after Nagelsmann stepped down following Germany’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 32.
In a statement released by the DFB, Klopp was quoted as saying: “The national team can unite us Germans like almost nothing else. That is precisely what makes this role so special to me.”
He said he was looking forward “to this special challenge in German football, which we will tackle together with humility and patience.” He wanted to build a team “that fights for one another, that enjoys playing football, and behind which the people of our country can rally with complete conviction.”
The former Liverpool manager held talks with DFB officials in New York while working as a television analyst during the tournament, and the federation announced on July 11 that the two sides had reached agreement on the essential terms of a contract.
His contract starts on August 15 and continues until the summer of 2030, with the next World Cup tournament.
His first match as Germany head coach will be against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24 in Germany’s opening Nations League fixture.
This is Klopp’s first coaching job since he left Liverpool in 2024 citing fatigue.
The DFB also announced on Friday that Per Mertesacker will be its managing director, after his predecessor Andreas Rettig steps down at the end of the year.
Klopp’s star-studded coaching career
After spending much of his career as a player for Mainz, Klopp as coach took the club to the Bundesliga for the first time.
Then, as Borussia Dortmund’s coach, he took the team to back-to-back Bundesliga titles, taking the club to the Champion’s League final in 2013.
His more recent coaching career saw him shine with England’s Liverpool, which he coached for nine years, delivering a first league title in more than a quarter of a century and glory in the 2019 Champions League final.
Klopp was awarded the highest civic award in Germany as a result of his outstanding contribution to democracy and his impact on the football world. He was credited with becoming a role model, a football ambassador and someone who has improved the image of Germany around the world, particularly in the United Kingdom.

‘She didn’t disclose her whereabouts’: JFI chief confirms Tulika Maan’s CWG withdrawal, NADA hearing next | Commonwealth Games News
NEW DELHI: India’s judo campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has suffered another setback. A day after 73kg judoka Arun Kumar was ruled out after failing a dope test, CWG silver medallist Tulika Maan has been withdrawn from the Glasgow Games after coming under scrutiny over alleged whereabouts failures.TimesofIndia.com spoke to Judo Federation of India (JFI) president Mukesh Kumar, who confirmed the development and said the matter is being looked into.Confirming the development, Kumar said: “She didn’t tell us about her whereabouts. We are looking into this. As per the rules, an athlete needs to disclose his/her whereabouts to NADA. She didn’t.”“She has been called to the NADA office. She has gone there. We will talk to her. Let’s see what decision comes up. But as an athlete, she had to disclose her whereabouts so that testing could be done on time,” he said.Tulika is one of India’s strongest medal hopes in judo at the Glasgow Games. She won a silver medal in the women’s +78kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. The Indian judo competition at the 2026 Games is scheduled from July 31 to August 2.The development comes just a day after when 73kg judoka Arun was declared ineligible following an adverse analytical finding in an out-of-competition test conducted by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA).Arun had enjoyed a rapid rise in recent years. He won gold at the 2023 Macau Junior Asian Cup, followed by another gold at the 2025 Taipei Asian Open and a bronze medal at the Hong Kong Asian Open. Earlier this year, he finished seventh at the prestigious Tashkent Grand Slam, earning his maiden Commonwealth Games selection.
When Indian athletes faced similar cases
This is not the first time an Indian athlete has faced action over whereabouts failures.Sprinter Hima Das received a 16-month retrospective suspension by NADA after recording three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period (suspension ran from July 22, 2023, to November 21, 2025).Boxer Parveen Hooda was suspended by the International Testing Agency (ITA) for whereabouts failures (suspension ran from April 2022 and March 2023). She was also stripped of her bronze medal from the 2022 Asian Games.
What is the whereabouts system?
The whereabouts system is an anti-doping rule that allows authorities to carry out random, no-notice out-of-competition testing on elite athletes.Athletes who are part of a Registered Testing Pool (RTP) must submit their location details every three months through WADA’s ADAMS platform or the Athlete Central app. They must also provide a fixed 60-minute time slot each day during which they will be available at a specific location for testing. If a doping control officer visits during that one-hour window and cannot find the athlete, it may be recorded as a missed test. Failing to submit or update location details is known as a filing failure.Under anti-doping rules, any combination of three missed tests or filing failures within a rolling 12-month period is treated as an anti-doping rule violation and can lead to a ban of one to two years.
