Drivers have been vocal about how the complex energy deployment needs of the 2026 generation of Formula 1 cars have impacted how they have to be driven, with the reliance on energy harvesting causing a big mental shift in how to approach faster corners.
Mercedes driver George Russell is one driver who has struggled to gel with his machinery this year, which has come more naturally to his championship-leading team-mate Kimi Antonelli.

Norris, whose McLaren team has only finished on the podium four times this year as it tries to reel in Mercedes, appeared to have little sympathy for Russell’s plight in what is still F1 fastest car in 2026.

“I mean, I’ve had to change my driving style every single year of my life,” Norris said in Hungary. “I guess for him it’s worked for 20 years, for me it’s not worked. My driving style worked back in 2018 when I did my test year. That’s probably about it. Ever since then I’ve had to change.
“I think the more experience you have in Formula 1, the better equipped you should be. If you’re not ready to adapt to a different car, then you’re not at a good enough level. It’s our job, it’s what we’ve got paid millions to do. It’s to drive any car you get given, whether it’s a good one, a bad one, an easy one or a hard one. You have to do it.”

Norris particularly struggled over the first part of the 2025 season to wring the most out of his McLaren on the limit in qualifying, before finding technical and driving style solutions that helped him get back in the title race. That constant adaptation process hasn’t stopped yet with the 2026 car.

“Every single race I come into at the minute, I feel like I have to completely forget the last weekend and learn how to drive a new car, because that’s how it is for us,” he said. “Every driver is different. But for me, my whole career in F1 has been about how I can change my driving style every season.”

The controversial energy deployment rules are so complex that the power units rely on machine learning software to control them. It has left drivers unimpressed because the power units are so sensitive to inputs that a car can easily lose several tenths down the straight because of a slight deviation in the previous corner. As Norris’ team-mate Oscar Piastri put it in Spa, at times it feels like qualifying results are being decided by “computers behaving or misbehaving”.
While it has become harder for the outside world to judge driver performance and isolate it from the power unit, and Norris shares the general frustration over how random the power unit behaviour feels, he disagreed with Max Verstappen‘s opinion that a driver can’t make as much of a difference anymore.
“You certainly can [make the difference],” Norris said. “Obviously, some corners get a little bit more eliminated. Maybe it tightens up, but if you’re a better driver, most corners are still corners to try and gain an advantage on everyone. You’re still going to be ahead.”
While some faster corners are now used to recharge energy, Norris felt the reduced downforce levels of the 2026 cars are now turning medium-speed corners into a much bigger challenge.

“At the very fast tracks, like Silverstone and Spa, there are fewer corners where you can gain lap time. But on a track like this, I don’t think that’s true at all,” he explained. “Some of the corners this weekend are going to be bigger corners than they were ever before, because the top speed into Turn 11 and Turn 4 is higher than last season, with less grip. In fact, it’s almost the opposite. It’s a chance for you to make more of a difference as a good driver.”

The German Football Association (DFB) has appointed Jürgen Klopp as the new head coach of the national team on Friday, ending speculation about who would succeed Julian Nagelsmann.
DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said the association’s governing bodies had unanimously approved Klopp’s appointment, describing him as the “ideal choice” for the role.
“It is a great honor to sit here today,” Klopp said at the press conference announcing his appointment, adding he was “delighted.”
What else do we know about Klopp’s appointment as Germany head coach?
Klopp emerged as the federation’s preferred candidate after Nagelsmann stepped down following Germany’s penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the World Cup round of 32.

In a statement released by the DFB, Klopp was quoted as saying: “The national team can unite us Germans like almost nothing else. That is precisely what makes this role so special to me.”
He said he was looking forward “to this special challenge in German football, which we will tackle together with humility and patience.” He wanted to build a team “that fights for one another, that enjoys playing football, and behind which the people of our country can rally with complete conviction.”
The real Jürgen Klopp
The former Liverpool manager held talks with DFB officials in New York while working as a television analyst during the tournament, and the federation announced on July 11 that the two sides had reached agreement on the essential terms of a contract.

His contract starts on August 15 and continues until the summer of 2030, with the next World Cup tournament.
His first match as Germany head coach will be against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on September 24 in Germany’s opening Nations League fixture.
This is Klopp’s first coaching job since he left Liverpool in 2024 citing fatigue.
The DFB also announced on Friday that Per Mertesacker will be its managing director, after his predecessor Andreas Rettig steps down at the end of the year.

Klopp’s star-studded coaching career
After spending much of his career as a player for Mainz, Klopp as coach took the club to the Bundesliga for the first time.
Then, as Borussia Dortmund’s coach, he took the team to back-to-back Bundesliga titles, taking the club to the Champion’s League final in 2013.
His more recent coaching career saw him shine with England’s Liverpool, which he coached for nine years, delivering a first league title in more than a quarter of a century and glory in the 2019 Champions League final.

A day after 73kg judoka Arun Kumar was ruled out after failing a dope test, CWG silver medallist Tulika Maan has been withdrawn from the Glasgow Games after coming under scrutiny over alleged whereabouts failures.TimesofIndia.com spoke to Judo Federation of India (JFI) president Mukesh Kumar, who confirmed the development and said the matter is being looked into.Confirming the development, Kumar said: “She didn’t tell us about her whereabouts. We are looking into this. As per the rules, an athlete needs to disclose his/her whereabouts to NADA. She didn’t.”“She has been called to the NADA office. She has gone there. We will talk to her. Let’s see what decision comes up. But as an athlete, she had to disclose her whereabouts so that testing could be done on time,” he said.Tulika is one of India’s strongest medal hopes in judo at the Glasgow Games. She won a silver medal in the women’s +78kg category at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. This is not the first time an Indian athlete has faced action over whereabouts failures.Sprinter Hima Das received a 16-month retrospective suspension by NADA after recording three whereabouts failures within a 12-month period (suspension ran from July 22, 2023, to November 21, 2025).Boxer Parveen Hooda was suspended by the International Testing Agency (ITA) for whereabouts failures (suspension ran from April 2022 and March 2023). She was also stripped of her bronze medal from the 2022 Asian Games.
What is the whereabouts system?
The whereabouts system is an anti-doping rule that allows authorities to carry out random, no-notice out-of-competition testing on elite athletes.Athletes who are part of a Registered Testing Pool (RTP) must submit their location details every three months through WADA’s ADAMS platform or the Athlete Central app.They must also provide a fixed 60-minute time slot each day during which they will be available at a specific location for testing.If a doping control officer visits during that one-hour window and cannot find the athlete, it may be recorded as a missed test. Failing to submit or update location details is known as a filing failure.Under anti-doping rules, any combination of three missed tests or filing failures within a rolling 12-month period is treated as an anti-doping rule violation and can lead to a ban of one to two years.
DETROIT — James Outman hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, Dillon Dingler had a tiebreaking double in the eighth and the surging Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 4-3 on Thursday night.
The Tigers have won 14 of 19 games to potentially persuade the franchise to keep Tarik Skubal and make a push for the playoffs instead of dealing the two-time Cy Young Award winner before the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
Drew Anderson (4-4) gave up one run in the eighth inning and Kyle Finnegan entered with two on and one out in the ninth and got out of the jam with a double play for his second save.
Kansas City’s John Schreiber was an out away from getting out of the seventh with a two-run lead, but Outman hit his 2-2 fastball just over the fence in right field to make it 3-2.

Josh Rojas pulled the Royals into a three-all tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning. Dingler hit an RBI double off Steven Cruz (2-3) in the home half.
Isaac Collins broke a scoreless tie with a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Randy Dobnak threw five scoreless innings for the Royals.
Tiger starter Troy Melton allowed two runs, five hits and four walks over five innings.
Before the game, Skubal said his preference is to finish the season with the Tigers and compete for a championship.

Skubal knows his next start, on Friday night against the Royals, could be his last with the team.
Royals manager Matt Quatraro was not with the team due to a personal matter. The Royals, who did not give details, said they expect Quatraro back soon.
Skubal (6-5, 2.83 ERA) is scheduled to pitch the second game of the series and LHP Noah Cameron (5-8, 5.27) might start for the Royals.
Should Fury and his “AJ” win these contests, they will finally clash towards the end of this year, with a November showdown at Wembley Stadium possible – if the fight begins in the early hours of the morning, apparently.

When is the fight?
Fury vs Wach will take place on Friday 24 July at Max Muaythai Stadium in Pattaya, Thailand. The main card is believed to begin at 3.15pm BST (7.15am PT / 9.15am CT / 10.15am ET), with main-event ring walks then likely at 5pm BST (9am PT / 11am CT / 12pm ET).

Fury has said:“This great fight will not be streamed live! It will only be broadcast on my hit Netflix TV show ‘At Home With The Furys’ season three.” There is currently no release date for that season. The Independent will provide live updates from the event, however.

The Minnesota Twins return home with their chins up despite a losing road trip.
Minnesota will try to keep its confidence high when it opens a three-game series against the Athletics on Friday night in Minneapolis. The contest marks the start of a six-game homestand for the Twins, who also will host the Kansas City Royals for three games.
The Twins are coming off a 3-4 road trip. However, they closed the trek with back-to-back wins over the Cleveland Guardians, which gave manager Derek Shelton reason to believe that the team is on an upswing.
That could prove to be important as the Minnesota front office tries to decide whether to buy, stand pat or sell ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline.
“To bounce back, it’s one of the few times going home 3-4 that I feel good about it,” Shelton said after the Twins escaped with a 3-1, 12-inning win over the Guardians on Thursday.

The Athletics will try to spoil the good feelings for Minnesota. They are coming off back-to-back losses against the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix, and they are 2-4 since returning from the All-Star break.
Injuries have decimated the Athletics, who put right-handers J.T. Ginn and Mark Leiter Jr. and infielder Joshua Kuroda-Grauer on the injured list this week. A slew of other players such as Brent Rooker, Nick Kurtz, Zack Gelof, Luis Severino and Justin Sterner also have been sidelined by injuries.
Athletics manager Mark Kotsay said the injuries are testing the team’s depth, particularly in the late innings, where he now must rely mostly on unproven hurlers.

“It’s challenging,” Kotsay said. “You look at the bullpen collectively, and there’s just not a lot of experience. There’s not a lot of guys with track records that can come in and shut down an inning. We’re going through a tough stretch here of trying to find those guys. We’re not going to stop trying. We’ll continue to make moves.”
The Twins will turn to right-hander Zebby Matthews (4-7, 5.40 ERA) as they seek their third win in a row. Matthews hopes to bounce back from his worst start of 2026 after the Chicago Cubs slammed him for 10 runs (eight earned) on nine hits in three-plus innings during a 10-1 rout on Sunday.
This will be Matthews’ second career start against the Athletics. He faced the A’s on June 4, 2025, and earned a win after holding them to one run on four hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out four.
The Athletics will counter with left-hander Jacob Lopez (4-4, 6.64 ERA), who will make his 16th appearance and 13th start of the season. He is looking for his first victory since May 24 against the San Diego Padres.

In his most recent outing, Lopez took a 5-2 loss against the Washington Nationals on Sunday after giving up two runs on two hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and matched his season high with six strikeouts.
In two career appearances (one start) against the Twins, Lopez is 1-1 with a 6.10 ERA. He has given up eight runs (seven earned) in 10 1/3 innings, but he also has walked only two batters while striking out 17.

With both sides attempting to gain ground in the National League wild-card race, the St. Louis Cardinals host the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a three-game series on Friday night.
The Cardinals have dropped five of seven games since the All-Star break and sit 1 1/2 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for the final NL wild-card spot. St. Louis also is a half-game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates, who are currently the first NL team out of the playoff picture.
Trying to stay afloat in the playoff chase, the Reds enter their third consecutive road set riding a pair of series victories. Cincinnati, which is six games behind the Diamondbacks, took two of three from both the Colorado Rockies and the Seattle Mariners.
Since St. Louis’ Dustin May hurled a one-hit shutout against the San Diego Padres on June 15, little has gone right for the right-hander. In five starts since the gem, May (5-7, 4.78 ERA) is 0-1 with a 9.92 ERA.
May threw five innings for the first time in more than a month on Saturday, but he surrendered five runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking four in a 5-3 loss at Arizona.

Despite May’s rough patch, Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol has confidence the 28-year-old can find his rhythm again.
“He’s competed well. He went through a stretch there where he gave us some really good outings,” Marmol said. “After the complete game, there have been some ups and downs, but he’s good enough to get out of this.”
Making the 91st appearance (77th start) of his major league career, May will face Cincinnati for the first time.

Among the Reds getting their first look at May will be All-Star first baseman Sal Stewart. The 22-year-old ranks fourth in the majors with 74 RBIs after knocking in nine runs across the club’s first two series since the midseason break.
“I think there are guys that relish those opportunities,” Cincinnati manager Terry Francona said of Stewart’s success with runners on base. “He’s so strong and he’s got great hitter’s hands. The ball just jumps off his bat.”
Despite the RBI surge, Stewart is batting just .130 (3-for-23) since the break.
On the mound, Rhett Lowder (3-7, 5.75 ERA) will be chasing a bounce-back effort for Cincinnati.

After appearing as a starter for his first 13 outings of the year, Lowder made three appearances out of the bullpen before re-emerging in the rotation after the All-Star break. Last time out, the 24-year-old right-hander lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in a 10-3 loss to the Rockies on Saturday in Denver. He struck out two and didn’t walk a batter.
“(Colorado) was just being aggressive and I was probably leaving too many thick pitches for them. Balls were just finding holes,” Lowder said of that outing. “It was very frustrating.”
Lowder has thrown eight scoreless innings across a pair of starts against the Cardinals during his career. He faced St. Louis on June 7, allowing just one hit but walking five across three scoreless innings in a no-decision. The Reds lost 5-3.

Klopp’s appointment was widely expected for weeks and his contract will see him through to the 2030 World Cup, co-hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
“Jurgen Klopp is not going to have any ‘career’ after the national team,” he added.
