Your medals inspire more than words: PM Modi praises CWG 2026 medallists | Other Sports News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday interacted with India’s Commonwealth Games 2026 medal winners at his residence and praised the athletes for their dedication, hard work and contribution towards bringing glory to the nation.

During the interaction, PM Modi said athletes have been among the most frequent visitors to his residence and appreciated their consistent efforts over the years to achieve success for India.

“I have been in this house for about 12 to 13 years now. If there is anyone I have received regularly and every single time, it is the athletes. Because of your hard work over the last 10 to 12 years, your constant efforts to bring victory to India, and the tradition of scaling new heights of success,” PM Modi said in a video posted on his YouTube handle on Monday.

The Prime Minister highlighted the impact of athletes’ achievements in motivating young people to take up sports, saying their medals inspire more than just words.

“The impact we could try to make by going to schools and telling them ‘you should play,’ your medals inspire them far more than any words ever could,” he added.

PM Modi also interacted with individual athletes during the meeting. Speaking to women’s shot put F57 gold medallist Sharmila Dhankar, he recalled her earlier promise that her two daughters would also become athletes.

“You promised me last time that your two daughters would become athletes,” PM Modi said.

Responding to him, Sharmila said, “Yes, they are still young. In the next Commonwealth Games, we will show you three medals coming from one home.”

The Prime Minister also shared a light moment with women’s discus throw bronze medallist Seema Kaliramna, who said she was nervous while meeting him.

“My heart is racing, sir,” Seema told PM Modi.

“Don’t worry. You’re going to get a medal for your speech too!” PM Modi replied.

Seema later shared her excitement about meeting the Prime Minister and said her friends often asked her in Haryanvi if she would get an opportunity to meet him.

“My friends used to ask me, in Haryanvi, they’d say, ‘Have you met PM Modi that we should listen to you?’ Today, I have met you, sir, and now I can tell them, ‘Yes, I have met Modi-ji,’” she said.

PM Modi further stressed that building a sports culture was essential for India to achieve greater success at the international level.

“Sports infrastructure is one part of it, but a country wins medals when a ‘sports culture’ is built. Friends, you have done a great job and brought glory to the nation. I congratulate you all,” he said.

Expressing confidence in their future performances, PM Modi said the athletes would continue to achieve success and hoped to meet them again after more victories.

“Believe me, you will be victorious in the future as well, and we will meet here once again. Thank you very much and best wishes,” he said.

India ended its Commonwealth Games campaign in Glasgow with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze, to finish fourth in the overall medal standings.

The Glasgow Games concluded after 11 days of competition, with Scotland formally handing over the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton to India, which will host the landmark centenary edition of the multi-sport event in Ahmedabad in 2030.

Vikings Tryout a Half Dozen Players as the ’26 Camp Continues

A GM’s work is never done. Such a reality is made evident in the recent Vikings tryout that involved bringing some talent to the Twin Cities.

Alec Lewis of The Athletic offered the news that Minnesota brought a half dozen players in for a workout. Check out the details: “The Vikings held some tryouts today for RBs and safeties: — RB Jermar Jefferson — S Glendon Miller — S Wande Owens — RB Dominic Richardson — S D.Q. Smith — RB Marcus Yarns.”

The Vikings Tryout Six Players

Lately, there has been some chatter about what’s taking place at safety.

Harrison Smith remains away from the team. Whether he officially retires remains to be seen but he hasn’t given any indication that he’s coming back. Part of what’s making things a touch more fascinating is that Jamal Adams has been moved back to his normal position. “He’ll play some safety,” Kevin O’Connell confirmed on Sunday.

So, some things to monitor at safety, a vital position in the Brian Flores defense.

The trio of defensive backs to be brought to town — Miller, Owens, and Smith — all boast nice size. Check out the basic details:

  • Glendon Miller: 6’2″ and 206 Pounds
  • Wande Owens: 5’11” and 210 Pounds
  • DQ Smith: 6’1″ and 219 Pounds

At least traditionally, the builds are that of box safeties rather than those tasked with playing center field 40 yards down the field (but Flores can strain what’s normal or expected of different body types). Think closer to Josh Metellus than Cam Bynum.

Note, as well, that all of these lads are young and reasonably unheralded. None were drafted, instead getting tossed into the NFL after agreeing to UDFA deals either after the 2025 or 2026 NFL Drafts.

At running back, the Vikings boast some nice talent but nobody who could confidently be called elite. In particular, the Vikings will be leaning on Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason (said to be in excellent shape). There’s then rookie speedster Demond Claiborne alongside rookie thumper Max Bredeson (a sledgehammer). Both of these guys will make the roster.

Otherwise, note the presence of Zavier Scott, somebody with a great build and silky mitts. Good chance a team scoops him up for a 53-man roster if he doesn’t get onto Minnesota’s final team.

Consider some of the basics for the runners who worked out for the Vikings:

  • Jermar Jefferson: 5’10” and 212 Pounds
  • Dominiq Richardson: 5’11” and 204 Pounds
  • Marcus Yarns: 5’10” and 198 Pounds

Whoever gets added, if any at all, will be tasked with depth duty. Showing an ability on specials will be key. So, too, would it be a boost to provide an ability to do the little things well on offense. Pass blocking, ball security, and even lining up in the correct spot every time. Those small details matter to a football coach.

The Vikings get back to work at practice later today.

If you’re a player who considers “putting for dough” a personal specialty, there’s an upcoming event you won’t want to miss.

Mark your calendar for September 23, when the PopStroke Invitational presented by TaylorMade in partnership with 8AM Golf takes over PopStroke Nashville with a guaranteed $70,000 prize purse on the line. Local athletes, celebrities and creators will be on the greens competing alongside everyday players, with live music from Nashville artists keeping the energy going all night.

The Nashville Invitational marks the fourth stop in PopStroke’s Invitational series, following successful events in Sarasota, Scottsdale and Palm Beach. This time, the competition opens up to golfers local to Nashville, giving the city’s own players a shot at the spotlight. It’s the latest expression of something PopStroke has been building for years, with weekly putting leagues already underway at locations nationwide, and a growing belief that competitive play is where golf entertainment is headed.

Seventy-two two-player teams will battle it out in a best-ball format across two full rounds at PopStroke Nashville, competing for the top prize. Ahead of the main event, 144 individual players will compete in two rounds Tuesday night, with the lowest score taking home the individual title.

The Vikings’ Training Camp Controversy Gets Clarity from Plugged-In Writer

The Vikings’ training camp has seen a passer battle take place. Forced to guess, I’d say most onlookers arrive at some mixture of fascination and exhaustion.

What stands out beyond the passers?

A story that has received ample interest has nothing to do with what’s taking place on the field. Or, at least, what’s directly taking place on the field. Rather, the story has been the team’s restrictions placed on those in the stands being allowed to film practice. Plenty of people have been discussing the issue, including former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel. Why the kerfuffle?

The Vikings’ Training Camp & The Restrictions on Filming Practice

Ben Goessling of The Star Tribune jumped into the controversy, offering some clarity by explaining the background of Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. The skipper used to glean insight from online videos.

“This was part of Kevin O’Connell’s job as a young assistant with the 49ers, too,” Goessling writes. “The team officials who get irked by videos being posted from #Vikings camp in Eagan are often the ones who benefitted from it with other teams.”

Note that Goessling is sharing these insights in response to Dallas DC Christian Parker peeling back the curtain on the knowledge that can get gleaned from these online clips:

Ari Meirov writes, “#Cowboys DC Christian Parker says he doesn’t like fans and other people posting videos from training camp practices. Why? When Parker was with other teams, he would find Cowboys practice clips online and flag anything they could use.”

Success in the NFL is very difficult. Teams scrape and claw for any tiny advantage to help set themselves apart from the crowd. Maybe that sort of insight can arrive via the online world, especially in the early moments of the season, as Coach Parker suggests.

Jan 4, 2026; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell looks on against the Green Bay Packers during the first quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jeffrey Becker-Imagn Images.

Coach O’Connell has noted that Minnesota will be adjusting the scheme somewhat to better house the quarterback talent. Many think that Kyler Murray is going to be the top option but J.J. McCarthy is keeping things reasonably close. Whoever is under center will get an edge from the element of surprise.

Furthermore, the Vikings have been open about the impact that Asst. HC Frank Smith and OL coach Keith Carter have had on the run game. Do any of the clips online tip Minnesota’s hand for what will look different? If so, then the Vikings don’t want those things to go live for the world to see.

That Week 1 Packers game involves a pair of teams that know each other well squaring. Maintaining some element of surprise is therefore of value to Minnesota’s coaching staff.

Practice takes place later today at TCO Performance Center.
