11 V6-Powered Exotic Cars, Ranked By Horsepower

Us humans have an instinct to group things together, to find the common denominators and build classification methods for everything around us. It can be hard to keep track of the many different categories of cars. Economy cars, supercars, off-roaders, sports cars, hypercars, and the list goes on and on, but sometimes, the definitions get fuzzy. Take the exotic car, for instance. What exactly makes a car exotic? A few things come to mind immediately: sculpture-esque looks, high-performance engineering, fine materials inside and out, emotional appeal, hefty price tags, and high cylinder counts. Most of these things are characteristic of the exotic car, but we often forget that more doesn’t always mean better.

In limiting the exotic car to those with the most cylinders, we miss out on some of the most exciting members of the family. Both in recent years and historically, the V6 has appeared in some of the world’s finest exotics. Often performance-oriented, exotic cars benefit greatly from the V6 layout, which is compact and light, but still powerful. Throw in a turbocharger or two, or some electric motors, and you’re looking at power figures well into the triple digits. The V6 may be down a handful of cylinders, but the engineering behind these engines, the cars that are built around them, and the feats they are capable of make them absolutely deserving of the exotic label. Here are 11 V6-powered exotic cars, ranked by horsepower.

Honda NSX-R

In September 1990, Honda graced the world with one of the best cars it had ever made. The NSX was a lightweight, mid-engined sports car, and even in its most basic form, it was a legitimate competitor. With driving dynamics developed from the advice of Ayrton Senna, the NSX was a true driver’s car in every sense of the word. In 1992, Honda pushed the NSX even further with the NSX Type R. The NSX received all the fixings you’d expect for a radical performance car. All creature comforts like AC, sound system, and sound insulation materials were dropped for weight, and the leather seats were traded for Carbon-Kevlar Recaros. The suspension was tightened up, the traction control was removed entirely, and the 3-liter V6 maintained its 280-horsepower output, the same as the base model.

Following the Type R, the truly special NSX-R appeared in 2002 for a very limited production run of 140 units that lasted until closure in 2005. The R featured a facelifted design, no power steering, and a plethora of carbon-fiber body panels that further saved weight in this already-light car. The star of the show remained the engine, though. During the development of the original NSX, Honda landed on the V6 design for its compact size and high power output. It was transversely mounted to improve weight distribution, and in the R, many of the internals were hand-machined to meet Honda’s rigorous standards. All said and done, the NSX-R’s V6 made 290 horsepower.

Lotus Emira

One of the crown jewels of England, Lotus produces some of the world’s most honest and lively sports cars. For years, its focus on the driving experience has been paramount to the character of a Lotus. If you want to be comfortable, buy an LC500, some might say — a Lotus is for driving, and only driving. The Emira, however, reshapes the brand’s reputation. There’s a leather-coated interior with creature comforts and reassurance technologies like cruise control, lane change assist, and parking sensors.

Despite these sudden additions of civilian tech, the Emira retains its ultimately Lotus character. It’s light on its feet, tipping the scales at just over 3,200 lbs. It uses communicative, hydraulic steering over electric power steering, and it can be optioned with a six-speed manual transmission. It also looks fantastic. Its mid-engined proportions evoke silhouettes of cars with price tags that dwarf the Emira’s. Its lines are harmonious, and the intakes are tastefully aggressive. The overall look is of something far more capable and far more expensive, and yet Lotus has managed to wrap all these elements up in a tiny package without creasing the paper. As it has in the past, Lotus has sourced the Emira’s engines from other manufacturers, which allows it to focus on integrating and calibrating them for the car’s distinctive character. At the head of the pack is a Toyota-sourced 3.5-liter supercharged V6, putting out a healthy 400 horsepower.

Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm

It may seem strange to denote a four-door sedan as an exotic car. If that were the only fact you knew about the Giulia GTAm, it would be easy to cast it into the oblivion of sports sedans, but one look at the Giulia GTAm’s spec sheet, or its face, and you will quickly realize it is absolutely deserving of the exotic label. As is the case with most Italian cars, the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm is eye-wateringly gorgeous. GTA stands for “Gran Turismo Alleggerita,” the final word meaning “lightened,” and many of its exclusive aluminum or carbon body panels feature fresh designs along with their weight-saving capabilities. The grille, massive rear wing, and vivacious paint colors immediately elevate the GTAm to neck-craning status, and it has the performance to match.

Those aforementioned aero elements aren’t just for looks, though. The GTAm’s body was sculpted by the wind tunnel wizards at Sauber, Alfa’s F1 team partner, giving it racing-level aerodynamics. Alfa also takes the Alleggerita label very seriously, as the rear windows are made of polycarbonate, door handles are fabric loops, and the rear seats have been deleted in favor of a roll cage. In total, the GTAm sheds 275 lbs from the original. Under the very pretty hood is the main attraction. The GTAm is powered by a twin-turbo V6 which features GTAm-exclusive upgrades including more boost, improved electronics, and a sonorous Akrapovic exhaust, all of which contribute to its 533 horsepower output.

Jaguar XJ220

When the world first saw the Jaguar XJ220 concept car at the 1988 British International Motor Show, Jaguar was on fire. It was coming off a Le Mans win, and everyone wanted a piece of the pie. The pie in question was the XJ220 concept car, an enormous, elongated thing promising to put V12-derived power to the tarmac via an AWD system. It was the essence of the Jaguar racing spirit, and that made it highly desirable. However, the stretch from concept to production was long and full of obstacles. Just a year after the reveal at the British International Motor Show, Jaguar was struggling. As a fully independent automaker, it simply did not have the capital to compete with larger brands and conglomerates, and it experienced a plunge in sales and profit. Across the Atlantic, Ford had its sights on Jaguar and offered a $2.5 billion acquisition deal, which Jaguar accepted.

The time was tumultuous, and the XJ220’s development reflected this. When the final product came out in 1992, its looks were largely unchanged, but the internals were reworked. Mainly, it was now RWD, and power came from a turbocharged 3.5-liter V6. It was still a supremely impressive performance car despite the adjustments. Built on an aluminum honeycomb chassis, the XJ220 was remarkably light for its size, and equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. In its birth year, it was crowned the fastest production car in the world, able to hit 217 mph, thanks to the V6’s 542 horsepower.

Acura NSX Type S

The second mention of the NSX nameplate brings an entirely new version of the car to the table, but it preserves the driver-focused spirit of the original. Introduced in 2016, the NSX was one of the pioneering hybrid supercars. It introduced new technologies like Acura’s Sport Hybrid Super Handling AWD system, which allowed for torque vectoring functions, drastically increasing handling and agility. The new NSX was a true supercar, with the looks and performance needed to compete with the best, all with a more comfortable price tag. In 2022, the new NSX generation was coming to an end, and to send it off, Acura made the turned-up NSX Type S.

Acura pulled out all the stops for the ultimate version of its ultimate performance car. Production was ultra-limited, with just 350 units being made, and each one boasting upgrades like increased turbo boost pressure, speedier gear shifts, and stiffer racing suspension. The main attraction, though, was the powerplant. Acura’s longitudinally mounted 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 produced 520 horsepower on its own, a 20-horsepower increase from the standard NSX. Its 75-degree V angle was chosen for a lower center of gravity in its mount, and it was supplemented by three electric motors, one sending power to the rear wheels and the other two being independently assigned to each of the front wheels. When this complex powertrain put everything together, the NSX Type S was good for 600 horsepower on the dot.

Maserati MCPura

To talk about the MCPura, we must first talk about the Maserati MC20. Five years old at the time of the MCPura’s debut, the MC20 was introduced in 2020 as a return to form for the Italian automaker. Maserati hadn’t built a true supercar since the MC12, and the brand was in need of a halo car to remind the market that Maserati was a name to dream of. The MC20 was in development for two years, with much of the focus being on its V6 engine. Maserati hadn’t developed an engine in-house since 1998, and its return had to be a memorable one. Lucky for Maserati, it was. The V6, codenamed Nettuno, was a masterclass in supercar engineering. Its main attraction was the Maserati Twin Combustion system, a form of pre-chamber ignition. Long story short, it helps burn fuel quicker and more efficiently, making for more power.

The MCPura was revealed in 2025 as an updated evolution of the MC20, refreshing Maserati’s halo supercar five years into its lifespan. The MCPura, as the name suggests, is all about purity. Part of its commitment to driver purity comes in its low weight, with the MCPura weighing in at just over 3,300 lbs, thanks to its carbon-fiber monocoque and other composite materials. The design is purely Maserati too, full of theater and sculpted curves. Powering the MCPura is the Nettuno, complete with its tight 90-degree V angle and twin turbochargers. Thanks to the MTC technology, the Nettuno puts out a strong 621 horsepower.

Ford GT

It is a rare thing for Ford, the American giant, to make a true supercar. Often, the pinnacle of its road-going performance division comes in the form of a souped-up Mustang, like today’s GTD, but once in a blue moon, it makes something truly wonderful. The Ford GT’s history goes back to the GT40’s iconic, Ferrari-vanquishing Le Mans win. To commemorate its motorsport version of David and Goliath, Ford revived the GT as a V8-powered road car in 2004, and in 2015, it revealed the next modern iteration of its Le Mans-inspired superstar.

While the 2004 GT preserved the look of the original with some retro-styling, the second-generation GT brought a faithful but entirely new look. It was a stunning car, and every crease and corner was lightweight and functional. Flying buttresses, hollow taillights for ventilation channels, and other sculptural trickery made the GT as capable as it was striking, with the drama factor further increased by things like its track mode, which hunches the car down in attack mode, seemingly grazing the ground. Nestled into the middle of its teardrop body is the longitudinally mounted, 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6. Like the rest of the car, the engine is light, made up entirely of aluminum, and it sends power exclusively to the rear wheels via a seven-speed, dual-clutch automatic gearbox for an authentic race car experience. The GT employs sticky carbon-ceramic brakes all around for stopping power, which is necessary given the V6’s 660 horsepower output.

McLaren Artura

Times are changing, and the world of supercars has to change with it. Brands that once might scoff at the idea of an engine with fewer than eight cylinders, or may consider a battery in their car sacrilegious, have had to adapt with the times, and remake their principles. The McLaren P1 proved hybrid tech belongs in not just supercars, but hypercars, and the McLaren Artura now makes a case for the V6 as the future of entry-level exotics.

The Artura is a car of firsts for the brand. The name itself feels like a name, rather than McLaren’s usual cold numeric codes. It’s the first car from McLaren to feature an electronic limited-slip differential, helping with cleaner and quicker corner exits, or drifts depending on the driver’s desires. It’s the first McLaren built on the brand’s McLaren Carbon Lightweight Architecture, which provides supreme rigidity and lightness. The MCLA monocoque is a new development from McLaren, reserved for its hybrid models, with its structural accommodations and safeguards for the battery, making for a more efficient and stable drivetrain package. It uses an axial-flux electric motor, a more compact alternative for electric power compared to the industry-standard radial-flux motors. Despite all this newness, it is still very much McLaren in looks and capabilities. Its RWD drivetrain can send the Artura to 60 in just 2.6 seconds, thanks to the 690-horsepower combined output of the axial-flux electric motor and the 3-liter twin-turbo V6.

Ferrari 296 Speciale

The Ferrari 296 could be considered the main rival of the McLaren Artura for its similar market placement and V6 hybrid powertrain. While the better of those two might be a matter of opinion, the greatness of the 296 Speciale is a bit more objective. Ferraris are always extreme from the factory, but every so often the Modena madmen turn things up a bit. The 360 Challenge Stradale, the F430 Scuderia, the 458 Speciale, and the 488 Pista are all Ferrari at their purest form. Revealed in 2025, the 296 Speciale is the most recent example, and it might be Ferrari’s best work yet.

One look at it, and the aero elements are obvious. There’s a channel going through the hood, ducts before the front wheels that smooth out passing air and help cool the brakes, and corner winglets, reminiscent of the FXXK’s, to provide downforce, with the help of an active wing flap that constantly adjusts its deployment angle. This trickery means the Speciale produces 959 lbs of downforce at 155 mph, which is necessary when you look at its power figures. Improved boost management and lightweight internal components make the Speciale’s V6 set a new specific power record for its class at 234 hp per liter. Its 120-degree V angle is wide open and houses the twin turbochargers as close as possible to the exhaust exits, all of which helps the Speciale make 869 horsepower.

Mercedes-Benz AMG One

Every so often, a manufacturer comes along and claims it has built a hypercar that brings the Formula One experience to the road. Often, these cars are quite close, but if any one example can claim the crown, it has to be the Mercedes-Benz AMG One. When the concept premiered in 2017, the Mercedes Formula One team was at the pinnacle of the sport — who else would you want making your road-legal F1 car? The task at hand was already a huge undertaking, and the pandemic slowed development even further. Finally, in 2022, the AMG One was ready for its first deliveries, and the motoring world was curious to see what Mercedes-Benz had come up with.

The result was astounding. The One lived up to its claimed title, and it was an exercise in performance that seemingly did the impossible. Starting with the bones, the One was built on a carbon tub. Impressive, but the real wonder was that Mercedes-Benz elected to mount the engine straight to the chassis. This is generally avoided as it decimates creature comforts with loud chassis vibrations, but the weight savings and rigidity benefits are unmatched. The most impressive part, though, was the powertrain. The turbocharger for the 1.6-liter V6 used a Motor Generator Unit-Heat system, derived straight from F1, to keep the turbo spooling at all times with the help of an electric motor. With two more electric motors at the front wheels, the combined horsepower was an enormous 1,049.

Ferrari F80

Every so often, Ferrari blesses the world with a car that acts as a summary of the brand. These are its finest creations, where it pulls out all the stops. Not a dollar is spared, and there is no idea too wild to explore. The 288 GTO, the F40, the F50, the Enzo, and the LaFerrari are all what have come before, and now we have the F80 as the newest addition to Ferrari’s ultimate flagship supercar lineage.

Given that the previous models all came with V8s and V12s, the idea of a V6 in Ferrari’s grandest production model ruffled some feathers. But one close look at that V6 and the car itself makes it clear that the F80 is purebred motorsport royalty. The powertrain is adapted from the 499P, Ferrari’s Le Mans-winning hypercar. The cockpit is entirely driver-focused, with its color-coded emphasis and race-car wheel. From the pilot’s seat, you are cocooned in a lightweight speed machine, complete with independent active suspension on each wheel and a massive active rear wing. Its aero produces an astonishing 2,315 lbs of downforce at 155 mph, and its computer brain can map a track and calculate optimal power delivery zones. Its AWD delivery keeps the F80 planted and primed for devouring corners while producing face-removing acceleration, as the F80 can hit 60 in just 1.9 seconds. The twin-turbo V6, when combined with the three electric motors, gives the F80 a whopping 1,184 horsepower to work with.

Xbox Furniture Grows From Controllers Into Living Rooms, Thanks to New IKEA Collaboration

Swedish furniture maker IKEA and Microsoft’s Xbox division posted a short Instagram video this week that shows pieces shaped like the buttons and sticks on an Xbox controller. Designers from both companies worked together on the line. A full look at the collection is expected during Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, on August 26.

Close-ups in the video begin with a real-life analog stick, a ridged circular surface, until flashing light flares traverse it, revealing a brilliant green D-pad shaped like a square with rounded corners chopped out. Next, we see a larger, stick-shaped object that resembles a stool or coffee table. As the clip progresses, wider shots of a room decked out in Xbox colors appear near the finish, but none of the particular things are identifiable. They’re staying silent about specifics like product names, materials, price points, and the exact number of pieces.

IKEA has experimented in the gaming furniture market before. They’ve done ranges with ASUS Republic of Gamers, their own Brännboll line, and a variety of other items such as desks, chairs, storage, and crazy colorful chairs that are designed to blend in with your everyday environment. This time is unusual, as it is the first time they have collaborated directly with a console company. Xbox, on the other hand, has been experimenting with non-traditional gaming hardware, as evidenced by the Series X mini fridges and the toaster that burns their branding directly onto your toast.

All of this comes at a nice moment, as Xbox celebrates its 25th birthday. If you’re attending Gamescom, you can find them in Hall 7, where they’ll be demoing new titles on playable stations. These furniture pieces are designed to be part of their show presence, so you might be able to sit on them or get a closer look in person. For the time being, it is unknown when they will be available for purchase, which regions they will be offered in, and whether they will be limited editions.

People online have been laughing about the assembly instructions and meatballs, but there are lots of others who are truly curious about whether more shapes like a controller will appear. Xbox responded with a brief Swedish “Hej” in one of their own posts, and the video itself has received tens of millions of views on their own channels. Until August 26, all we can confirm is the green D-pad cushion and the big oversized stick shape we noticed. Everything else? For the time being, the specifics are being kept under wraps.

NASA’s LRO Spots the Crater a SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Carved into the Moon

Between August 11 and 12 NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter locked onto a quiet patch of lunar ground and returned the clearest views yet of a brand-new scar. The crater formed six days earlier when a spent Falcon 9 upper stage struck the surface at roughly 5,400 miles per hour.



On January 15, 2025, a Falcon 9 upper stage launched Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost 1 lander toward the Moon. After that happened, that section had almost no fuel remaining. Going through the motions, attempting to manage re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, was no longer possible. So, starting in January 2025, for well over a year, this empty rocket stage just kinda hung there, floating in a roughly elliptical orbit under the gravitational influences of the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun, and then suddenly on August 5, its path came to an end on the lunar surface, at 6:35 in the morning (according to the clocks on UTC).

Independent observers first noticed that the stage was heading for a collision with the Moon’s surface in April, prompting NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies to take a closer look at the trajectory, essentially refining the math to improve their models; once completed, the predicted zones were passed on to South Korea’s Danuri orbiter. Danuri then took some images of the new crater site, barely hours after the impact, which turned out to provide them a very accurate position, not too far from the expected collision zone, allowing the LRO team to plan their own passes.


Every two hours, the LRO orbiter passes by the Moon from pole to pole at a speed of about a mile per second and an altitude of about 60 miles, which is the type of speed that requires some effort to tilt. The Narrow-Angle Camera on board has fairly decent resolution at that speed, and can pick up details as small as three feet across – but in order to keep the new crater centered, the spaceship had to make some very severe rotations on repeated orbits, tilting by more than 20 degrees at times. It also had to be precise in terms of time, because even a ten-second delay would have relocated the target nearly ten miles out of the frame. Only by imaging the stage in various lighting settings were they able to obtain the series of views presented this week.

The measurements they took of the rim put the crater at 60 feet across, and based on the shadows on the floor, they estimate the depth is less than 10 feet. The impact occurred at an angle of about 31 degrees to the horizontal, resulting in the V-shaped spray of ejecta on the southern side, and the darker material fanning out was all from the top foot and a half of the regolith, a layer that had been exposed to solar wind, cosmic rays, and micrometeorites for a long time, so it is naturally rougher in texture and more muted in color. The brighter pieces near the rim, on the other hand, are most likely younger rock and dust that was pulled up from deeper underground and has not yet had time to change color.

The crater’s updated coordinates are 19.4759 degrees north, 266.7138 degrees east, and 511 meters elevation, and comparing the new images to earlier images of the same area, there’s no doubt that this change is relatively recent, and engineers will find it an interesting opportunity to test their tools for predicting collisions with objects of known size, mass, and speed. Furthermore, it demonstrates how a seemingly minor collision can mess up strata on the Moon that have been in place for millions of years.

I Saw the Future of AI in a Robot That Can Learn on the Spot

Last week, I ventured a whopping 15 minutes from my house to see robots do some mind-boggling, jaw-dropping stuff.

I visited the Cambridge, Massachusetts, offices of a startup called Generalist AI, where I watched robot arms perform simple chores like stacking cups, putting blocks into bowls, and the like. I was astonished by how quickly they figured things out—it was reminiscent of a flesh-and-blood person.

The arms mastered a range of tasks after ingesting a short, instructional video and, most impressively, no specific training for a given task. One of the most striking examples involved a robot that was instructed to sweep a block into a bowl using a dustpan and brush. When the brush was removed from the scene, the robot improvised by using the dustpan like a brush and flicking the block into the bowl.

In another case, a two-armed robot watched a videoclip of someone unzipping a purse before removing some banknotes. I watched—somewhat slack-jawed—as the robot unzipped a different kind of purse and carefully removed the notes. Most amazingly, when it couldn’t grab the money, it switched from using its right gripper to its left to get a better angle of attack. “Ha,” said one engineer standing nearby. “It never did that before.”

“This is exactly the kind of thing people were really excited about with GPT-3,” Generalist cofounder and CEO Pete Florence told me, in reference to OpenAI’s breakthrough large language model, released in 2020. “You could take that model and just prompt it to do a new task and it would have a real shot at doing it.”

Generalist appears to be focused on teaching its robots about the physics of the world, which seems inspired by the intuitive sense of physics humans exhibit from an early age. That may well contribute to the model’s ability to transfer what it has learned in one scenario to another. In fact, some of the company’s demos made me think of how children improvise and experiment when shown a task. The researchers have often been surprised by what the robot decides to do—one chose to sweep up items with a banana when it was placed in front of it, for example. This might seem trivial, but physical intelligence is something still largely lacking in machines, and the way babies learn so efficiently about their world may offer important insights for AI researchers.

Marion County, Kansas Has Racked Up $4 Million In Settlements Since It Raided A Local Paper’s Office

Sure, the town’s insurance will pay most of this, but it’s probably fair to say most of this small county’s population (11,823 at last count) wasn’t supportive of local law enforcement’s decision to violate as much of the First Amendment and Fourth Amendment as possible in the apparent hopes of making one local business owner happy.

The backstory is long and convoluted. It involves a local business owner who wanted a liquor license (but had been cited/arrested from drunk driving), her estranged spouse (who shared some documents with Marion County Record reporters), a local attorney who just wasn’t up to the job, a police chief who was far too friendly with the business owner, and a bunch of other law enforcement agencies that pitched in with the constitutional violations just because. And all of that is on top of then-police chief Cody’s animus towards the paper, due to its reporting on his past misconduct.

Here’s a summation of the events leading up to the raid.

There’s Kari Newell, a local business person who was seeking a liquor license for a new business when her previous drunk-driving record became public. There’s County Attorney Joel Ensey, who claimed to have no knowledge of the raid until public records showed he actually knew plenty about it beforehand. There’s the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, which also disavowed all knowledge, until it became clear it had knowledge as well, at which point it began publicly condemning Chief Cody and his department. There’s the mayor who didn’t like his deputy mayor and seemed to be all too willing to indulge the police chief. There’s the judge who signed off on the search warrants without reading them and then tried to distance herself from actions — a judge who apparently had some drunk driving problems of her own. There are the communications Chief Cody made to Kari Newell, informing her he was going to raid the newspaper to shut down its coverage of her and, presumably, any further investigation into his law enforcement past. In the middle of all of this, there’s some bullshit computer crime charges, which were invoked despite the newspaper accessing driver record data legally through a third party.

Following the raids — that’s right, raids — multiple lawsuits were filed. Not only did the Marion County PD (under the leadership of Gideon Cody, whose past misconduct was being examined by the local paper) talk a local court into blessing its raid of the newspaper’s office, it also raided the home of the paper’s owner, 98-year-old Joan Meyer, who died less than 48 hours after the raid.

Pretty much every lawsuit filed by the victims of these raids has paid out. Last November, the county agreed to pay $3 million to three of the affected journalists and one of the town’s city council members, who was also subjected to an illegal raid by local officers.

That large settlement followed a $235,000 settlement the town agreed to pay to Marion County reporter Deb Gruver, whose computer was seized along with her personal cell phone by local law enforcement officers.

That brings the total to $3,235,000 (at minimum!). The latest settlement — one that will be paid to another of the paper’s reporters — now means county residents will be asked to contribute to a tab that has now surpassed the $4 million mark:

Phyllis Zorn, the reporter whose acts of journalism served as an excuse for the August 2023 police raid of the Marion County Record, will get $850,000 from the city of Marion to settle her federal lawsuit over the raid.

This is the sort of thing that should make all good Americans yank on their imaginary suspenders and get their rural lawyer shtick on. We should — as a unified drawl — make it clear that we, as the collective “small town lawyer,” think this is some disturbing bullshit. And we should fervently argue in favor of large settlements, even if we know this just means our fellow Americans will be asked to give a little more the next time the budget’s on the agenda.

While I do think its sucks that the public has to pay the price for government malfeasance, things like this encourage more people to vote with their wallets. That doesn’t mean funneling money into some PAC. That means protecting your earnings by expelling the people who were on board with these blatant violations of constitutional rights. And Marion County residents aren’t done paying for the perverse acts of prosecutors, law enforcement, and the mayor who had the cops’ back all the way through this debacle:

Zorn previously received $600,000 from the county, which settled various lawsuits over the raid for a collective $3 million last fall. The city has not yet settled lawsuits filed by newspaper publisher Eric Meyer and former city Councilwoman Ruth Herbel. Former reporter Deb Gruver settled with the city in 2024 for $235,000.

The county government is making things right. That it’s doing this with other people’s money doesn’t mean the settlements are meaningless. We, the people, should simply rejoice in our magnanimous nature. Even though we’re getting fucked, we can at least take heart in the fact that we were invited to the climax.

Another streaming app is raising prices across all subscriptions

Peacock is raising prices across all three of its subscription plans.

New customers will pay more immediately, while existing subscribers will see the higher rates on bills from September 17.

The ad-supported Peacock Premium plan is increasing from $11 to $13 per month. Premium Plus is going from $17 to $20. The Select plan, which offers a more limited selection of programming, is also going up from $8 to $9 per month.

Annual subscriptions are getting more expensive too. Peacock Premium will now cost $130 a year, up from $110, while Premium Plus rises from $170 to $200. Select is increasing from $80 to $90 annually.

The latest increase comes after Peacock also raised prices in 2025, though the timing is particularly notable. The new rates are arriving just as Peacock heads into a busy period for live sports.

Peacock carries Sunday Night Football, the full NBA broadcast schedule, MLB and WNBA coverage, alongside the English Premier League. The new prices take effect just before the Premier League season gets underway. The NFL regular season is also fast approaching, and the 2026-2027 NBA season is due to begin in October.

The service is also leaning on its wider entertainment catalogue to justify the higher cost. Subscribers can watch shows including Love Island USA, The Traitors, Yellowstone, The Real Housewives and Law & Order, alongside films such as Wicked, Obsession and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.

There are also more releases on the way. These include Line of Fire, The Traitors: New Blood and Crystal Lake, a Friday the 13th prequel series.

For anyone already subscribed to Peacock, there is at least some breathing room before the increase appears. Existing customers won’t see the new pricing on their bills until September 17 or later. Meanwhile, new subscribers will pay the higher rates immediately.

Sonos’ iPhone app finally gets Live Activities support

Sonos has finally added Live Activities support to its iPhone app.

The new feature, rolling out to iPhone users now, gives users quicker access to playback controls without having to reopen the app. The feature appears on the Lock Screen after you start playing audio on a Sonos device and leave the app.

Once active, the Live Activity shows the room or group that was last playing audio, along with controls for playing, pausing and skipping tracks. This means you can make basic playback changes directly from the Lock Screen.

The feature also works when playback is started outside the Sonos app. Sonos says the controls will still appear when audio is initiated through Direct Control from supported services. They also work with Bluetooth or AirPlay. This gives the Live Activity a little more flexibility than simply acting as an extension of the app.

There are some limitations at launch, though. Album artwork isn’t currently displayed in the Live Activity. Sonos says it is looking into other ways to improve the Lock Screen experience, so there is every chance that this could change in a future update.

Sonos also confirmed that Live Activities work with Apple Watch and CarPlay. However, the playback controls aren’t currently supported on either platform. That makes the iPhone Lock Screen the main place where the new feature is useful for now.

Live Activities have become a handy way of keeping information from apps accessible without constantly opening them. Therefore, the addition is a welcome one for Sonos users. It’s also a surprisingly basic feature to be arriving only now, given how useful quick playback controls can be when listening around the house.

Sonos itself described the addition as a “much-requested, anticipated, and needed feature,” so it seems the company is well aware that this has been a long time coming.

Mini Blinking Barrels Keep Desktop Traffic In Check

Your desk or bench is a work area, so why not make it look the part? That’s the idea behind the miniature blinking traffic barrels that [Glen Akins] recently put together. Of course, just a single blinking light doesn’t really sell the idea of a busy construction zone, so he spent a somewhat surprising amount of time and effort optimizing the design for small-scale production.

The end result is a fascinating write-up that dives into the design decisions [Glen] made. Every aspect of this project, from the overhang of the “handle” on the 3D printed barrel to the number of passive components on the PCB was carefully considered. Critics may say [Glen] put too much thought into something that didn’t need to be so complex, but projects like these are an excellent way to keep your skills sharp — there’s no such thing as practicing too much.

Starting with the design of the barrel itself, we appreciate that [Glen] kept the capabilities of his desktop 3D printer in mind. By breaking the design up into multiple pieces and avoiding overly steep angles, he produced a design that prints cleanly without the need for support material. His step-by-step documentation and screenshots also serve as a great introduction to designing parts in Fusion if that’s something you’re interested in.

From there, things switch over to the electronics. Some in the audience will bemoan that he’s using a PIC12F1612 microcontroller to blink a single LED instead of a 555, but [Glen] brought the receipts on this one. Not only does the PIC offer more flexibility in terms of getting the blinking to look the way he wants, but it requires fewer passive components on the board and is considerably more energy efficient than the iconic timer IC. Even if you ignore all the other advantages, he calculates that going with a 555 would have cut the battery life of the finished product by approximately 15%.

This is one of those projects that’s difficult to summarize in such a terse format, as every time you think the write-up must be about over it takes a new turn on you. We were mildly bemused when the second iteration of the PCB popped up, but by the time he introduced the custom programming adapter board, we knew [Glen] wasn’t messing around.

Unsurprisingly, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen [Glen]’s handiwork. You may recall seeing his RP2040-powered sound board earlier this year, but his name has been popping up on these pages for more than a decade now.

This move was necessitated by its contracted cloud storage provider, Open Source Storage (OSS), which quietly went defunct earlier in 2026.

CEO apologizes for police misuse as activists call for vandal action against license plate cameras

Surveillance tech company Flock has struggled with its public image for years, but the problem has become particularly acute in recent weeks.

Its network of ALPRs has long attracted criticism over mass surveillance and the retention of location data belonging to motorists who are not suspected of any offense.

Days after its CEO apologized for documented abuses of the company’s system, The Register contacted the company’s usually responsive media team about an online campaign calling for its automated license plate readers (ALPRs) to be vandalized on Halloween, and received an automated response.

“Thanks for reaching out to Flock. Our media team is currently touching grass and taking a break,” the email said.

“Unlike our cameras, we can’t work 24/7, so we’ll get back to you when we’ve had a snack and regained the ability to form coherent sentences.”

The media handlers have a lot on their plate. More recently, reports of ICE agents accessing local police forces’ Flock systems, and police officers using the technology to stalk former partners, have coincided with an increase in vandalism targeting the cameras.

This week, US social media users began promoting Halloween 2026 as a night of action against Flock’s ALPRs, which continue to attract negative coverage.

X grouped posts about the so-called “De-Flock America” campaign into a dedicated trending story, which recorded more than 36,500 posts over two days. Similar calls have appeared on other major social platforms.

Posts encourage participants to wear costumes, leave their smartphones at home, and disable nearby ALPRs while concealing their identities.

The Reg asked Flock whether it was aware of the campaign and planned any countermeasures, but received only the automated response.

Apologies and changes

Last week, Flock CEO Garrett Langley apologized after a woman was stalked using his company’s ALPR system.

“It kills me that she went through that,” he told CBS News in an interview, less than two weeks after The Washington Post published a story highlighting 46 cases involving US police officers abusing their access to Flock’s system. Some allegedly involved officers abusing that power to stalk women.

Langley gave the interview after Flock announced an array of changes, including reducing its standard data retention period from 30 days to seven.

Customers may retain information for longer, however. A new “Evidence Mode” allows law enforcement to retain data beyond that seven-day period if it’s required for ongoing casework.

Flock also introduced controls allowing police agencies to restrict the types of searches that outside forces can run against their data.

For example, City A might request permission to search data belonging to City B as part of an investigation. With the new feature, City B can restrict City A from making searches related to “immigration enforcement,” a nod to ICE agents accessing police Flock systems without a dedicated contract.

Flock will also require customers to enable its existing Audit Assistance feature by year-end. The tool detects unusual search activity and flags it for review. It is currently optional but will become mandatory by year-end, having been “associated with arrests of several law enforcement officers who allegedly abused the system.”

Flock said more than a third of customers have voluntarily opted in to Audit Assistance so far.

Langley’s interview appeared one day after People reported that Haines City police officer Christopher Goodson, 31, allegedly used Flock to search for his estranged wife’s license plate 717 times. The searches took place between September 1, 2024, and June 30, 2026, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Goodson was suspended with pay pending further investigation. ®

Epic Games dismisses Apple’s simplified EU App Store fees as ‘junk’

Consumer group sees improvements on paper but warns the devil remains in the detail

Apple’s latest attempt to settle its App Store dispute with the European Commission has drawn criticism from Epic Games and a cautious response from a consumer group, which warned that “the devil is in the detail.”

Announced on August 18, the changes introduce new business terms for applications distributed in the European Union. Apple says the changes “reduce complexity by moving every developer that distributes apps in the EU to a single set of business terms” and resolve its long-running spat with the Commission over fees and alternative distribution.

An App Store app using Apple In-App Purchase will attract a 26 percent commission, reduced to 15 percent for developers in qualifying programs and auto-renewing subscriptions after their first year. The rate for apps using alternative payment processing will be 20 percent, or 10 percent for qualifying developers. Apps linking to the web to complete purchases will incur a 15 percent commission, again reduced to 10 percent for qualifying developers. Apps distributed through an alternative marketplace or the web will pay Apple a 5 percent “Core Technology Commission” on digital transactions.

The structure is simpler than Apple’s previous terms, which were revised after the company was slapped with a €500 million fine. Complaints about Apple’s antics continued through the end of 2025 amid accusations that the company was persisting in non-compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Apple claims the changes follow “close collaboration with the European Commission” and “resolve Apple’s disagreements with the Commission over business terms and alternative distribution.”

Naturally, there was plenty of hand-wringing and “think of the children” rhetoric from the iPhone slinger. The company would obviously prefer users to stick with Apple In-App Purchase, calling it “the safest, most trusted way for users to purchase and download apps and make seamless and secure payments in those apps.” It also noted that it had worked with the Commission on child safety measures for alternative payments, including parental gates and restrictions on links from apps aimed at children.

Epic Games, a longstanding critic of Apple’s App Store practices, called the scheme “junk fees,” adding that the plan did “nothing to open up the mobile app ecosystem to competition, as required by Digital Markets Act.”

“The law makes it clear that Apple must allow developers to offer link outs to the web for purchases ‘free of charge’ and has to allow ‘effective use’ of competing stores,” the company wrote.

The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC), an umbrella group representing 42 independent consumer organizations across 31 countries, was also cautious.

Sébastien Pant, the group’s senior officer for competition and digital enforcement, wrote: “On paper, there seem to be some improvements with a simpler and lower fee structure. But it remains to be seen if these commitments will satisfy app developers who will, in any case, pass on the fees to consumers.

“We also need to see the full user flow to see if consumers will truly benefit. For example, will consumers be able to easily conclude contracts with app developers on iPhones outside the App Store without having scare screens displayed? Will it be possible to easily download and use alternative app stores on iPhones and iPads without the artificial friction Apple deliberately created?

“Also, we must remember this is not a gift Apple is giving consumers, but something they are required to do so by EU law. It might be a cliché, but the devil is in the detail!”

Developers can sign the new terms immediately, with the changes taking effect on October 1. ®
