Anthropic says AI needs regulation. But who chose to build it?

In 1954, years after he led the project that created the atomic bomb, physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer was called to testify before the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). The ostensible subject of the hearings was Oppenheimer’s position on the hydrogen bomb, a far more destructive version of the atomic bomb that the US had developed and first tested two years earlier.

Oppenheimer, who in the years after the war had become increasingly conflicted about atomic weapons, initially opposed work on the hydrogen or thermonuclear bomb, partially for moral reasons and partially because he was skeptical it would work. But he later changed his mind and supported work on it. The lawyers at the AEC wanted to know why.

It wasn’t because Oppenheimer had changed his mind about the morality of city-vaporizing thermonuclear bombs. Rather, it was because American physicists had struck upon a new design for hydrogen bombs that wasn’t just workable, but positively elegant, or “technically sweet” as he called it. For Oppenheimer, that was enough. As he told the AEC hearing: “When you see something that is technically sweet, you go ahead and do it, and you argue about what to do about it only after you have had your technical success.”

What Oppenheimer described was a kind of moral helplessness dressed up as resolve: the pull of a scientifically beautiful answer to an ugly problem, and the accompanying habit of holding the moral accounting until after the technical success. It is one of the most honest things anyone who built the bomb — or any other world-altering thing — has ever said. And it has never stopped being relevant, because the people now building the world-altering technology of our own moment keep saying versions of it too.

Jack Clark, the co-founder and head of policy at Anthropic, the company behind the Claude models, is one such person. So it was worth paying attention last week when Clark sat down for a long public dialogue with Samuel Kimbriel, the founding director of the Aspen Institute’s Philosophy and Society, just six days after the federal government had abruptly cut off access to Anthropic’s two most powerful models, ostensibly over fears of what they could do.

Much of the conversation circled around a single idea that will be familiar to those who read Clark’s work: Powerful AI is coming, and it presents us with a choice — a choice we are actively refusing to make by failing to regulate AI. We regulate toothbrushes, Clark pointed out, and cars, and nuclear weapons. “But we seem to have this attitude towards technology that it’s impossible to regulate,” he said. “It is not impossible to regulate … we sort of act as though, oh well, the technology industry is just inevitably going to do stuff, which I think is a choice.” His sharpest example was the online platform shift that utterly reshaped the last two decades. “Social media ran an uncontrolled experiment on the world,” he said. “We all now think and talk a bit differently because of social media. That was a choice. We can choose things to be different.”

This is the kind of talk that has long differentiated Anthropic from other major AI companies: Its principals are willing to linger on the serious risks of advanced AI, risks that demand clear and even strong regulation. (About a week before the Aspen dialogue — and just a day before the Trump administration came down hard on Anthropic’s latest models — CEO Dario Amodei published a blog post calling for government authority to legally block or even reverse the deployment of frontier AI models failing safety tests on threats like cyberhacking and bioweapons.)

Anthropic acknowledges that advanced AI is an existential gamble, but argues it’s a gamble we must take. At the Aspen dialogue, Clark spoke of a coming century that will be marked by brutal challenges — aging populations, straining institutions, a warming planet — that apparently can only be addressed with AI. To not go forward with artificial intelligence would be to rob ourselves of medical miracles we can only imagine, and implicitly condemn those who might otherwise be saved.

Clark is right that there is a choice buried in all of this. But the question his framing elides is exactly whose choice it actually is.

Sure, as Clark said, we regulate cars and toothbrushes and nuclear weapons, but in each case someone built the thing first, and the rest of us were left to decide what to do about a world that already contained it. Nobody voted on whether the atomic bomb should exist. We were handed the consequences and had to write the rules later.

Much the same is true of AI. The choice Clark wants the public to make around governing it only became necessary once his industry created the thing that needs governing. He is offering us a vote on what to do about AI, not a vote on whether it gets made — because that vote was already cast, in private, by him, a few hundred colleagues, and trillions of dollars. But why didn’t we get a say? Why are we stuck in the world where, as in Oppenheimer’s formulation, “you argue about what to do about it only after you have had your technical success”?

I wasn’t the only person in the audience who was wondering this. Near the end of the dialogue, a young woman put a sharper version of this question to Clark directly. Every frontier lab now admits the technology carries enormous risk, even existential risk, she noted. “So my question is, what gives you, Anthropic, and the rest of the frontier labs the right to continue building something that could destroy everybody, when none of us can actually opt out of it?”

Clark, to his credit, did not brush the question away. But neither did he answer it fully. He reframed it — away from the choice to build, toward the need for someone to take responsibility after it is built.

That someone can’t be the companies themselves, he said, describing an ideal future where “outside compliance, regulatory, testing and verification systems” would decide when each lab was allowed to go further. Governments were already moving faster than anyone expected — the US and UK, he said, had built testing agencies whose tools were sometimes better than the companies’ own.

It was a gracious answer — albeit one that sat awkwardly with the reality that President Trump now appears to be regulating AI by whim — but notice what it concedes. Asked what gives his company the right to build something that could destroy everybody, the head of policy at a leading AI lab did not say we have that right. He said the decision shouldn’t rest with companies like his, only to describe a system to take it out of their hands that does not yet fully exist. He and his colleagues are still building, at the frontier, as fast as the science and the compute allows, while telling the room that someone else really ought to be in charge. AI is already loose in the world. The regulation of AI is still mostly the stuff of blog posts.

So why are they really doing this? To bring it back to Oppenheimer: because AI is “technically sweet.” It’s not the race with China, not the trillion-dollar valuations, not even the creditable desire to cure disease — though all of those are real. Underneath them is something simpler and much harder to govern: we are compelled to build what is beautiful. Clark all but said so, marveling that AI is “easier and simpler to build than many other aspects of science,” that his chief scientist jokes they’d have AGI already if they just fixed the bugs in their code.

We humans are a tool-using species, Clark argued, and AI is the ultimate tool. It’s not that AI is inevitable, exactly, but that it is so weirdly simple to build once the foundations are set that “almost any path you go down, [AI] appears.”

What Clark described is the pull Oppenheimer named in 1954 — the pull of an elegant solution that makes the question of whether you should build it feel beside the point.

I can feel it myself, and I’m just a user. Put a capable model at your fingertips, ask it to do something you couldn’t do alone — write the program, find the flaw, untangle the thing you’d been stuck on — then watch it simply do what you requested, and you’ll experience a small electric thrill that has nothing to do with aging populations or the future of democracy. That thrill runs in an unbroken line from the user at the keyboard up through the engineer who trained the model to the executive who shipped it.

That’s why I suspect Clark’s regulation talk, however sincere, is downstream of a decision that was never really in doubt. Like Oppenheimer with the hydrogen bomb, the people building this technology feel they have no choice but to go ahead — and then to hope the rest of us make the right choices to govern what they could not stop themselves from making.

We have been lucky, so far, with the last technically sweet device that could still end the world. The hydrogen bomb has existed for 70 years without being used in anger, not because we solved the politics Oppenheimer warned about, but because the wiser choice won. And because we were lucky.

Clark may be right that the choice is still ours: The bomb did not decide the Cold War, people did, and people can decide this too. But it would help if the people handing us that choice slowed down long enough to let us make it — instead of building as fast as they can and trusting our luck, and theirs, to hold.

Use Your Head While Trimming Trees

[Attoparsec] occasionally rides a bicycle for transportation, but with the major downside of doing this in North America, a place where bicycle infrastructure is generally neglected. From snow removal, maintenance, separation from cars, or even existing in the first place, the places bicyclists use are generally last to be cared for. One of these deficiencies is landscaping maintenance, with plant growth routinely extending into travel ways. Rather than continue to get hit in the face by tree branches, [Attoparsec] took matters into his own hands, or in this case, head.

Since he’s riding down the bike path anyway, the original thought was to add a trimmer to the front of the bicycle. This has a notable downside of being dangerous to others, so instead he added a string trimmer to his helmet. The electric trimmer was scavenged from an old handheld landscaping tool, with a 3D printed mount designed in CAD to cleanly mount to his bicycle helmet. It’s wired to a control on the handlebar, so when a branch is coming up it can be activated by hand and then pruned without much thought other than properly aiming one’s head.

By most measures this eccentric contraption seems to work quite well. There’s not enough torque to affect the rider’s head in any negative way, the strings are long enough to reach far enough to trim the leaves and branches before they can impact the rider’s face, and it’s safe for other users of the bike path. [Attoparsec] calls this “guerrilla urban landscaping”, a bit different from other forms of guerrilla gardening we have seen before.

Telegram literally gives Russia the middle finger after founder Pavel Durov is charged with aiding terrorism

What just happened? Russia has charged Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov with “aiding terrorism” and placed him on an international wanted list. The Federal Security Service (FSB) claims the platform failed to remove channels, chats, and bots used by Ukrainian intelligence to organize attacks inside Russia. Telegram’s response was less than diplomatic: its official X account posted a photo of Durov giving the middle finger.

The charges follow a terrorism-related investigation that became public in February. The FSB alleges that Telegram was used to coordinate sabotage, terrorist attacks, mass killings, and cyberfraud, resulting in deaths and extensive property damage.

A large part of the case centers on Daivinchik/Leo, a popular Telegram dating chatbot in Russia, where Tinder is no longer available. According to the FSB and Russia’s Investigative Committee, Ukrainian agents posed as young women to contact and entrap young Russians before coercing them into committing crimes.

Russian authorities say 46 people aged between 12 and 22 have been arrested over the last year after being recruited through the bot. They are accused of attacking law enforcement officers or setting fire to transport, energy, communications, and financial infrastructure. Ukraine has not commented on the allegations.

Durov, 41, could face life imprisonment if convicted. The FSB did not explain how it plans to add him to an international wanted list, and it’s unclear whether Moscow will seek an Interpol Red Notice. The billionaire lives in Dubai and holds French and Emirati citizenship. He posted that he was in Georgia last week, but his current location is unknown.

The case arrives amid Russia’s intensifying campaign against foreign internet services. Moscow has effectively throttled Telegram, forcing users to rely on VPNs, yet the Kremlin and Russian defense ministry continue posting on it daily. It was previously reported that the slowdown angered Russian soldiers and pro-war bloggers who depend on the app, while the Kremlin attempts to push citizens toward its state-backed Max service. A subsequent VPN crackdown was blamed for widespread banking outages.

Durov’s legal problems extend beyond Russia. French authorities arrested him in 2024 over allegations that Telegram failed to tackle criminal activity and cooperate with investigators. He denied wrongdoing and was eventually permitted to leave France while the investigation continued. Telegram later changed its terms to allow the disclosure of suspects’ IP addresses and phone numbers in response to valid legal orders.

Durov left Russia in 2014 after coming under government pressure over VKontakte, the social network he also founded. He has characterized Moscow’s actions against Telegram as an attempt to undermine privacy and free speech. The company’s response to the latest charge suggests that position has not changed.

The growing challenge of digital identity is shaping IntegraTRACE’s vision for enterprise visibility

Those experiences ultimately inspired the creation of IntegraTRACE, a SOC 2 Type II compliant identity visibility platform designed to help organizations understand how human, non-human, and agentic identities interact across cloud environments and enterprise applications. Rather than focusing solely on authentication or access management, Emmanuel explains that the company’s objective has been to provide organizations with a centralized view of digital identities as enterprise infrastructure becomes increasingly distributed.

From the beginning, Emmanuel wanted the platform to solve practical customer challenges rather than pursue features simply because they were popular. He explains that customer feedback has played a central role in product development, allowing the engineering team to respond quickly as cloud environments and identity ecosystems continue evolving.

According to Emmanuel, one of the most common responses from customers is realizing how much identity information had been dispersed across separate systems. Centralizing that information provides a clearer picture of access across the organization and helps surface potential risks before they become larger security concerns.

From his perspective, customers frequently identify over-privileged accounts, dormant credentials, and permission structures that would have taken weeks or even months to uncover through manual reviews. Rather than following lengthy development roadmaps, the engineering team regularly incorporates customer feedback into the platform, often delivering requested improvements within weeks. Emmanuel believes that approach has helped ensure every product enhancement is tied to a practical business need.

Looking ahead, Emmanuel says the company’s ambitions extend well beyond cloud infrastructure. The Neo Geo AES is coming back, right down to real cartridge support

Retro-Suckers: Back in the 1990s, Neo Geo was one of the most popular arcade platforms thanks to its unmatched computing power and graphics prowess. SNK tried to bring the system into the home with the Neo Geo AES console, which used its own cartridges that were physically incompatible with arcade MVS cartridges. The attempt ultimately failed, but the Neo Geo AES is now making a comeback among gamers seeking an “authentic” hardware experience without relying on emulation.

Plaion and SNK announced the revival of the Neo Geo AES platform earlier this year. The “premium” retro-gaming console is now available for pre-order, with multiple variants, accessories, and even an “extra-luxury” edition packed with controllers, cables, and game cartridges.

The Neo Geo AES+ is part of Plaion’s “Replai” offering, which sells several modern iterations of classic platforms such as the Intellivision, Atari 2600, and the Amiga. Plaion describes the Neo Geo AES+ as a faithful reimplementation of the original Japanese machine, using legacy ASIC-based solutions that don’t require any kind of emulation.

Custom ASIC chips replicate the original machine’s software and hardware functionality, which allegedly includes full compatibility with original AES cartridges.

Arcade authenticity aside, the Neo Geo AES+ also includes a few modern niceties to ease the pain of using classic consoles with modern setups. The machine provides a low-latency HDMI output, overclocking, and high-score storage on a separate memory card. I can safely say that overclocking is a rather crucial upgrade, as Metal Slug and other Neo Geo games are infamous for turning into annoying slideshows when too many sprites are shown on screen.

Neo Geo AES+ is coming out on November 12, 2026, with plenty of different pre-order options. The original edition costs €200 and includes a console, an arcade stick, and an HDMI cable. There is also an all-white Anniversary Edition, which costs €300 and comes with an additional wireless arcade stick, a white Metal Slug cartridge, a memory card, and more.

Sitting at the other end of the spectrum, the Neo Geo AES+ Ultimate Edition packs several additional controllers, 10 fan-favorite Neo Geo games, and plenty of dongles and cables. This particular version has a €900 price tag, which is still not enough to impress retro enthusiasts who remember how much the original console cost back in the 90s.

The Neo Geo platform played an important role in video game history, blowing away the hardware competition and giving rise to long-running series such as Metal Slug, The King of Fighters, and more. Neo Geo emulation has long been a “solved” problem on PCs and mobile devices, thanks to MAME and other actively developed projects.

The Neo Geo AES+ is the latest in a long list of modern devices designed to replicate both the games and hardware features of the original console. It might very well be the most effective one yet, although I don’t plan on spending €80 on one of the individual AES cartridges that Plaion is going to launch alongside the console.

Yamashita’s triumph a year ago consigned Charley Hull to her second Women’s Open runner-up finish in three years, but she has a big reason to be cheerful this weekend: the past two winners of the Women’s Open at Royal Lytham were Brits.

Valve Sponsors Work Bringing Open-Source RADV Driver To Windows

Valve is funding Collabora’s experimental effort to port the open-source RADV Vulkan driver from Linux to Windows. The team has already demonstrated Counter-Strike 2 running with RADV, but a stable interface or compatibility shim will be needed to handle undocumented driver changes. Phoronix reports: Louis-Francis Ratte-Boulianne put out a blog post highlighting their initial work on porting RADV to Windows. Besides working on Windows WDDM2 integration for Windows, a big challenge with porting RADV to Windows is on relying on the AMD Radeon Software Windows kernel driver.

It’s out-of-scope of this current work for trying to port the AMDGPU Linux kernel graphics driver to Windows, so they are working on bringing RADV to Windows while relying on AMD’s official Windows kernel driver. That in turn has led to reverse engineering and other steps for figuring out the proprietary kernel driver’s data structures and other elements so RADV can be adapted to use it.

How to change your Home address in Maps on iPhone

Changing your home’s address on Apple Maps can be almost as stressful as moving home in real life, but there’s one sure-fire way to get the job done without pulling your hair out.

The Apple Maps app is a great way to get around, whether you’re using it while driving via CarPlay or just walking. It also makes it easy to quickly get directions to the places that you visit often, like your home or where you work.

But if you’ve moved home and ever tried to change your address in your iPhone‘s Maps app, you’ll know it can be tricky. The job can be complicated considerably if you also have your home address pinned, too.

Thankfully, changing your home’s address is much easier when you keep in mind two main things. The first is that your home’s address isn’t normally set by the Maps app itself. And the second is that pinned addresses in the Maps app don’t automatically update, nor can they be edited.

It’s easy to see where the confusion comes from, but don’t worry. We’re going to clear everything up right here.

Your ‘Home’ address has a home of its own

The first thing to remember is that your iPhone uses your contact card as the source of your home address whenever it is needed. It’s this address that is used when you make purchases online, fill out online forms, and for anything else that requires an address.

Remember to update your pinned location in Apple Maps after changing your home address.

If you move home, it’s this address that you need to change. And thankfully, it’s easy to do.

  1. Open the Contacts app on your iPhone and tap My Card at the top of the screen.
  2. Tap Edit in the top-right corner of the screen and then scroll down to the address portion of your contact card.
  3. Tap the address fields and enter your new details.
  4. Tap the checkmark in the top-right corner of the screen to save your new address.

That’s all there is to it, your iPhone now has your new address. However, if you have your home set up as a pinned location in Maps, you’ll also need to go a step further.

Unfortunately, Maps won’t automatically update the pin to reflect your new address. Pinned addresses also can’t be edited, so you’ll have to delete the pin and add a new pin all over again.
