Although building a table saw out of LEGO is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when you look at those colorful bits of plastic, [Jamie] has been on a bit of a search for more applications of his LEGO-based air-powered motors. Naturally this led to the idea of doing something useful with it, like making a table saw you can actually use for real wood.
Starting off with a basic prototype using only regular LEGO pieces to get the mechanism figured out, [Jamie] then builds this up into said air-powered table saw featuring an actual metal blade. Suffice it to say that this isn’t something that you want your children to do with their LEGO while unsupervised.
The star of the show is of course the air-powered turbine that spins the blade. This is something that [Jamie] has been working on for a while, going through a number of prototypes to figure out a 3D printed geometry for the turbine blade that helps to convert as much of the high-pressure air into rotation.
Along the way it was also discovered that 3D printing saw blades is pretty hard, probably due to the lack of a sharp edge. This is definitely an area where it’s hard to beat a real table saw blade, with the added caveat that anything that’s good at cutting up boards of wood and sausages will just as happy slice through careless primate fingers.
In terms of safety features, the air supply is cut automatically with a sort of dead-man switch that requires you to keep one hand on it while using the final table saw design. There also an auto-feeding system added that tries to guide the board into the saw, but this turned out to be finicky. Suffice it to say that an air compressor and a handful of non-LEGO-approved components created a pretty convincing table saw.
Anker still sells the Soundcore Q20i as a $70 pair that regularly lands closer to $40, and that number explains why these over-ears keep showing up in carry-ons years after their original launch. Hybrid cancellation, a 40-hour ANC claim, memory-foam cups, and a fold-flat frame sit in a package light enough that you forget them until the cabin drone disappears. For commuters and travelers who want silence more than a flagship badge, that combination has been hard to ignore.
Anker’s headphones excel in hybrid cancelation, which uses four microphones, two pointing out and two pointing in, to eliminate rumble before it reaches your ear. The technology appears to be able to reduce low-frequency noise by 90 percent, including airline engines, bus motors, and workplace air conditioning. That is sufficient to effectively eliminate noisy cabins, subway chatter, and workplace fans without making you feel as if your ears are shut off in a more expensive set, although some loud speech and sudden noises still pass through.

Memory foam pads and soft leather on the outside make wearing these for long periods of time much easier than you may expect, especially for the price. The weight of 246 grams allows you to wear them for up to eight hours without developing hot spots. However, if you have large ears, the ear apertures are a little narrow, and the cup’s light hold means it can fall off if you gaze down too quickly. However, the cups fold up flat, making them ideal for storing in a backpack or the supplied case. The plastic headband and hinge are quite fragile, but they should be durable enough to withstand daily use.

The 40mm drivers and BassUp tech give the default sound a pretty heavy low end, which is great for hip hop, EDM, and modern pop, as the bass thumps along nicely and goes deep, but the mids get lost in the mix, so vocals and instruments can sound muddled, and the treble can get a little too sharp at times. Soundcore’s app has 22 pre-sets to choose from, as well as a custom equalizer, which can help to draw some of that bass back, even if the underlying V-shape in the sound remains. Wireless audio is via Bluetooth 5.0, although it only supports SBC and AAC; nevertheless, when you plug in the provided 3.5mm connection, it begins to refer to itself as Hi-Res. It also supports multipoint pairing, allowing you to connect it to both your phone and laptop at the same time, and it will instantly switch to the new device when it begins playing.
The battery life is what everyone is talking about, since Anker claims 40 hours with cancelation on and 60 with it off, but most users tend to get about the mid-to-high 30s with ANC on and around 49 hours in mixed use, which is still enough for a long weekend. A 5-minute top-up provides around four hours of playing, while a full charge takes an hour and a half to two hours. One thing to keep in mind if you’re using a wire: plugging in the 3.5mm cable usually turns off active noise cancelation, so you’re back to just music without the quiet.
Call quality is rather straightforward: its single microphone performs admirably in calmer areas but struggles in busy cafés or on public transportation, where background noise is amplified. All app functionality, including firmware updates, white noise tracks, and mode switching, is available via the Soundcore app for iOS and Android.

Let’s talk about what it means to be proud.
My mother grew up in Tarnów, Poland. She escaped communism and came to the United States in 1978 looking for a better life. She found one, built a family, and has lived in America for nearly 50 years.
But my mom is still very, very Polish.

Several times a year, I get a message: “Jakub. Did you see this?”
I already know what’s coming.
Some Polish person did something. A Polish athlete won something. A Polish scientist discovered something. Some guy with a Polish grandmother finished third in a regional Nebraska chess tournament. Doesn’t matter. Poland.
“Jakub. Look at this person.”

Okay, Mom. Who is she?
“POLISH.”
That’s it. That’s the story.
And I love it, because Mom has this completely indestructible pride in where she comes from. Plenty of us know someone like this: a Greek mom, Vietnamese dad, Indian uncle or Nigerian aunt. Somebody from their corner of the world did something great, and you are going to hear about it.

There is power in that instinct. Not because your people are better, but because you believe your place matters.
Seattle could use more of that.
We are almost pathologically humble. Our response to notable achievements is often a polite nod before everybody gets back to our regularly scheduled Seattle freeze.
That humility is working against us.

Second, Seattle isawesomeand the evidence is everywhere.
I see Seattle’s potential every day working alongside dozens of entrepreneurs building startups. Some of the most ambitious and talented people in the world are already here.
We have many billion-dollar startups across the region and more than 200,000 people working across technology, science, space, health and startups. That is more than enough talent to build yet a dozen more unicorns.
Nearly 40% of the world flies every day on airplanes built here. Blue Origin and SpaceX build rockets here. Starbucks, Amazon, Costco, REI and Nordstrom reshaped how the world shops. Microsoft helped put computing into our homes. AWS and Azure helped make the cloud the infrastructure of modern life. The University of Washington ranks among the world’s best. Seattle medical breakthroughs have helped save tens of millions of lives. We are pushing forward fusion energy, aerospace and maritime innovation. And let’s not forget: we just won the darn Super Bowl.
And so, so much more.

So why, despite all the evidence, do we still seem to have a communal case of imposter syndrome?
This is not a city lacking accomplishments.
It is a city with a branding problem.
Third, we have let other people tell our story for far too long. This ends, today.
Cities have brands whether they intend to or not. Silicon Valley is where ambitious people build companies. Nashville is music. Los Angeles for film and television.

Seattle’s cultural humility mostly assumes our accomplishments speak for themselves.
They don’t.
Reputation gets built one story at a time. You hear one story and it is interesting. You hear 10 and you notice a pattern. You hear 50 and your beliefs begin to change: That’s where important science happens. That’s where talented people live. That’s where I should invest, build or work.
Those beliefs shape real decisions about where people move, where companies get built and where investors put their money.

So to fix Seattle’s branding problem, here’s what we need to do.
Step 1: Let’s tell one clear story — Seattle’s talent pool is ridiculous.
Seattle is where deep technical talent meets deep domain expertise to build consequential things: AI, aerospace, cloud computing, medicine, fusion, robotics, maritime technology and enterprise software.
We do not need 50 slogans. We do not need another consultant-led branding exercise. We need one simple idea that people outside this region can remember: Seattle’s talent pool is ridiculous.
There is a reason some of the world’s most important companies have built major engineering centers, research hubs and second headquarters here for decades. They come for the talent.

And that talent is why Seattle will not just participate in the future. We will lead in building it.
Step 2: Let’s use the megaphones we already have.
Seattle already has outlets (including this one) telling this story — publications, podcasts and social channels that document the region’s startups, breakthroughs and product launches.
Every day, startups are raising money, scientists are making breakthroughs, companies are launching products, engineers are building technology and institutions are pushing this region forward.
That is not just tech news. That is the raw material of Seattle’s reputation. So let’s use it.
When you read or hear about a Seattle startup doing something remarkable, share it. When you see a story about a breakthrough at Fred Hutch or the University of Washington, send it to someone outside the region. When a local company raises money, lands a major customer or gets acquired, don’t just scroll past it. Amplify it.
Step 3: Let’s treat every local win as Seattle’s win.

When a local robotics company ships something remarkable, that is Seattle’s story.
When a maritime startup reinvents how ports operate, that is Seattle’s story.
When our AI research labs, or hometown heroes in Amazon and Microsoft, create breakthroughs, that is Seattle’s story.
When a biotech company lands a major breakthrough, when a game studio creates a global hit, when a clean-energy company reaches a milestone, that is Seattle’s story.

Our companies, universities, hospitals, labs, investors, civic organizations and business leaders should act like an amplification network for one another. Stop treating somebody else’s success as somebody else’s news.
Their win is our collective proof.
Step 4: Let’s put Seattle on the label.
Founders need to say where they are building. “Made with ❤️in Seattle” should be on the bottom of every website. Put Seattle in the press release. Put it in the LinkedIn post. Mention it onstage. Say it in interviews. Tell investors. Tell customers.

Silicon Valley companies have spent decades attaching their success to their geography. We should do the same. If you build something extraordinary here, make sure the world knows it was built here.
Step 5: Let’s do a better job of selling Seattle.
Every venture capitalist, founder, executive and civic leader in this region should be able to explain in 60 seconds why somebody should build a company here.
Not defend Seattle. Not apologize for Seattle. Sell Seattle.

Reminder: It’s the talent.

When investors and founders from New York, Boston or San Francisco come to town, show them the region. Introduce them to engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs. Bring them into the community. Let them see what is happening.
The best branding campaign is somebody getting on a plane home saying, I had no idea all of this was happening in Seattle.

If we’re going to succeed, we need tobelievefirst.
Insert all the Ted Lasso jokes you want, but this stuff matters.
There is no giant Seattle marketing department coming to save us. There is no national referee who will eventually review the evidence and declare that Seattle deserves more respect.
When somebody here does something extraordinary, act like it. Read the story. Share the post. Send the article to your team. Text it to your friend in New York. Put it in the group chat. Bring it up over dinner. Tell your kids.
Basically, become my Polish mother.

My mom doesn’t give a hoot that Kraków ranks No. 6 on some list or Warsaw is No. 8 on another. She doesn’t need a clickbait listicle to tell her Poland matters. She already believes it does.
We have to build our reputation ourselves. The good news is that we already have everything we need: extraordinary companies, world-class institutions, ambitious people, groundbreaking science and media documenting it all.
What we have been missing is the confidence to start being more loud. Stories become patterns, patterns become reputation, and reputation becomes gravity.
Gravity is what creates influence and respect.

Pride is not something somebody else gives you. You don’t wait until the rest of the country decides your home is important. YOU decide it is. Then you act like it.
Meta is putting out yet another bad-publicity fire, saying it has fixed an issue in which its Meta AI software could suggest prompts to users that would collect and reveal personal information, including about children.
The controversy started from a Sept. 2 Instagram video posted by parenting and lifestyle blogger Kalie Robins, who goes by kontheinside. In the video, Robins discussed a prior video post of herself singing in a car with her daughter in the backseat. Below the published video, Robins revealed how Meta AI posed a series of invasive prompts, such as “Who’s the child passenger?” and “Where does Kalie Robins live?”
According to Robins, when she clicked on those automatic questions, the AI tool pulled information from her past posts, piecing together private details about her life, including her location. The AI also drew on other profiles, such as her mother’s account, and even accessed data from a photo she claimed had been deleted years ago.
Robins said in the video: “I did not understand posting separate innocent pieces of our lives over years could mean an AI could sit there and assemble all those breadcrumbs into information about my minor children in seconds.” The video went viral, drawing thousands of comments and more than 308,000 likes as of this writing.

‘The issue was never just one photo’
A Meta spokesperson told CNET in an email that it has since “fixed” the issue, and that Meta AI will no longer suggest inappropriate, personal questions on users’ posts. The company admitted the feature missed the mark and stated that the tool is only meant to help people find more information using data users already have access to.

The response from Meta, which was also shared with other outlets, wasn’t sufficient for Robins. In a subsequent Instagram post on Sept. 10, she said she was glad that the company acknowledged the problem, but that she still had questions. “What exactly was fixed? What safeguard failed in the first place? And what protections are now in place when Meta AI encounters information involving a child?”
Even if Meta AI no longer suggests intrusive personal prompts, the feature can still make suggestions based on information the software can access, such as publicly available text, images from the web or previous posts on social media by users like Robins.
Meta also denied Robins’ claim that its AI accessed a photo deleted years ago. Instead, Meta told CNET that the photo of Robins’ kids was deleted right before the video was made, and a temporary bug briefly kept it visible.
In an email to CNET, Robins said that regardless of what happened with the deleted image of her kids, the larger concern remains. “The issue was never just one photo — it was the AI compiling information about my kids from multiple sources,” Robins told CNET. According to Robins, Meta has not contacted her directly or apologized.

Just the latest Meta privacy problem
Adding to the hundreds of comments posted on Robins’ Instagram account have been news stories on sites like Futurism, where the story was first widely publicized. Business Insider reported that what happened to Robins is prompting some parents to urge others to stop posting images of their kids online.
“This is creepy!” said Cathy Pedrayes, who posts frequently on social media about scams and dark-web trends.
Meta has faced multibillion-dollar settlements and court judgments this year over how its technology affects children, including addiction and creating environments where they may be vulnerable to exploitation.
Meta has also been facing criticism of its Meta smart glasses, particularly the facial recognition technology it has been developing.

The Dutch Nationaal Cyber Security Centrum (NCSC) is warning of imminent exploitation of two critical flaws in Check Point VPN tracked as CVE-2026-85102 and CVE-2026-85103.
Although no public proof-of-concept (PoC) exploit has been reported, the agency is urging organizations to install the security updates addressing the two issues as soon as possible.
“The NCSC assesses the likelihood of exploitation and the potential impact as high and expects exploitation attempts to occur soon,” the NCSC warns.
Check Point VPN is an enterprise solution that allows remote employees to securely connect to their company’s internal network via encrypted connections.

On September 9, Check Point issued fixes for the flaws along with separate security advisories describing them: sk1000117 and sk1000118.
CVE-2026-85102 is an improper validation of certificate data during VPN negotiation that a remote attacker could exploit to execute arbitrary code on a Security Gateway.
CVE-2026-85103 is a heap overflow in the VPN certificate ASN.1 decoder that could allow remote code execution on Security Gateways and Security Management Servers.
Affected releases include R81.20, R82, R82.10, R81.10.x, and R82.00.x, along with the end-of-support (EoS) versions R80 through R80.40, R81, and R81.10.

Both flaws are fixed by Check Point LivePatch Take 24 for R81.20, R82, and R82.10, while fixes are also included in the following versions:
R82.10 Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator Take 44 or later
R82 Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator Take 126 or later
R81.20 Jumbo Hotfix Accumulator Take 166 or later
Spark R82.00.10 Build 2325 or later

Check Point VPN version R82.20 is not affected by either flaw.
NCSC warned that exploitation of the flaws could allow an attacker to take full control of a system, view or modify confidential data, and disrupt operations.
The organization urges system administrators to apply the security updates as soon as possible. At the same time, for those using the ‘Site-to-Site VPN’ component, the advice is to modify VPN rules to limit access to specific, trusted IP addresses.
According to a post in Check Point’s community forums, users of Check Point Live Patch (CPLP) should have received all available protections for the two flaws since September 9, and those fixes should apply even without a server reboot.

CPLP users should check if they are protected by this automatic mitigation, as it is not available for versions other than R82.10, R82, and R81.20 and doesn’t support all configurations.

Over the past few years, navigation apps, whether it’s Google Maps or Waze, have become an integral part of our lives. These apps tell you a lot more than the current traffic conditions. They give you information about road closures, optimal lanes for driving, speed cameras, flooded roads, roadwork, low visibility, and even police sightings. But you may be wondering how exactly Google Maps, or GPS apps in general, know about real-time incidents like these. As surprising as it may sound, a lot of this real-time data comes from real users, people who are actually driving on those roads.
When it comes to identifying live traffic conditions, GPS apps rely on data being sent from the smartphones of people driving on those stretches of road. Google Maps has also been using machine learning and AI to predict traffic conditions for years now. But that doesn’t help Google Maps detect police sightings. That’s where real users like you come into the picture.
As you drive and use Google Maps for navigation, the app lets you report what you see. These incident reports then appear on the maps of other users driving on the same road. Google Maps takes feedback from other drivers to confirm whether the report is still valid. So, the next time you see a prompt confirming a police sighting ahead, another user may have added it. Apart from that, there’s also the possibility that Google Maps sourced this data from another app.

How crowdsourcing helps Google Maps

Crowdsourcing works because Google Maps has millions of users who act as its eyes on the road and, in a way, complement its efforts to gather real-time data. Google doesn’t have to independently identify and verify every police sighting. The users do that for Google Maps. When you report a police sighting, Google Maps then shows it to others driving on the same route. Other drivers can then confirm whether the police are still there, helping Google Maps keep the report up to date.
Its own users are not the only source of real-time information for Google Maps. It also sources reports from Waze, an app owned by Google. Google Maps identifies which reports come from Waze drivers. When it comes to crowdsourcing traffic-related information, Waze is one of the best navigation apps for Android. It has a built-in system to reward users with points for submitting reports. Integrating data from Waze gives Google Maps a larger dataset to work with, allowing it to provide more information to drivers.

Keep in mind that these reports aren’t permanent. They change as the situation evolves. Similarly, you shouldn’t blindly rely on these reports, because it’s essentially users who are submitting them. That’s why many GPS apps have a feedback mechanism to verify whether active reports are still up to date.

It’s not just other users who can submit reports about police sightings or similar incidents on Google Maps; you can do that too. And it’s fairly easy to do so. When using Google Maps in navigation mode, you will find a “Report” icon on your smartphone and on the Android Auto or Apple CarPlay screen. Tap on it, then select “Police,” and your report will be submitted. You should see a small police icon show up at your location. Also, you can enable or disable these alerts in Google Maps through Settings > Navigation > Alert options. Keep in mind that reporting police sightings is not supported in every region. But for users in the United States, the option should be available under the “Add a report” section.
There are concerns about features that allow drivers to find out about potential police presence. That’s because this can help drivers evade checkpoints by opting for alternate routes. For instance, someone driving under the influence could use these reports to avoid a checkpoint, putting others at risk. But for many drivers, it makes navigation much simpler, reminds them to slow down, and helps them avoid speeding tickets.
Bruce66423 shares a report from The Guardian: A bipartisan pair of American politicians is telling Britain’s most secretive court to stop hiding its handling of Apple’s legal fight against a government demand to break into its customers’ encrypted data, warning that Whitehall’s taste for secrecy is ‘needlessly’ straining relations between the two allies. The letter (PDF), shared with the Guardian ahead of being sent to the investigatory powers tribunal (IPT) on Friday, is signed by the Democratic senator Ron Wyden of Oregon and the Republican congressman Warren Davidson of Ohio.
The row dates back to January 2025, when the Home Office served Apple with a technical capability notice under the Investigatory Powers Act, which requires companies to assist law enforcement in providing evidence. The UK government demanded that Apple provide a mechanism to access encrypted iCloud backups worldwide, a call the company met by withdrawing its Advanced Data Protection encryption feature from UK users the following month. Apple’s challenge to that order at the IPT was later thrown out after the Home Office withdrew the original notice and issued a narrower one targeting only British users’ data. “It is wholly inappropriate for a foreign executive body to attempt to dictate the distribution of powers within the US government, nor should it be permitted to use secrecy directives under the Investigatory Powers Act to frustrate Article I powers under the US Constitution,” the pair wrote.
Wyden and Davidson write that Congress “is not only a co-equal branch of government, it is the First Branch,” and argue that no government can be allowed to place “its demands beyond the reach of legislative inquiry.”
“The UK government,” they write, “cannot champion legislative oversight at home while using administrative gag orders to kneecap the constitutional authority of the US Congress.”
When I was at Computex earlier this year, I shot a lot of Reels using my DJI Osmo. And don’t get me wrong: that little camera is excellent. The stabilization is great, the video quality is good, and it is exactly the kind of thing you want when you’re running around a trade show trying to make content. But then came the annoying part: transferring all that footage to my phone or laptop, moving it to the cloud, and finally getting it onto the platform I actually wanted to use. Apparently, HONOR had the same thought. The difference is that while I just complained about it, HONOR went ahead and built a phone around the idea. The HONOR Robot Phone is, admittedly, doing a lot. It’s a flagship Android phone, a miniature motorized camera gimbal, a robotic arm, and an AI playground all rolled into one. But after actually using it at IFA Berlin this year, I found myself caring far less about the novelty and far more about the camera. Because, honestly, this thing is really good.
The gimbal is the star of the show
HONOR calls it a 4-DoF Titanium Agile Gimbal, and the name sounds suitably ridiculous for a phone that can physically move its camera. It can pan, tilt, roll, and flip, and getting it going is surprisingly simple. You manually slide away the protective cover, tap the button in the camera app, and the robotic arm pops out. That’s basically the only manual intervention required.

From there, it feels remarkably familiar if you’ve used a DJI gimbal. It has an on-screen joystick for manual camera control, different stabilization modes, and excellent subject tracking. The default stabilization is already impressively smooth when you’re just walking around, while Super-Steady is more useful when you’re throwing the phone into more chaotic, action-heavy situations. The important thing is that I never got the feeling that this was a first-gen mechanism desperately trying to prove itself.

And then there is AI SpinShot, which is where the Robot Phone starts having fun. It can perform programmed 90- and 180-degree movements, including angled rotations, turning what could have been a gimmicky flip mechanism into something genuinely useful for cinematic B-roll. Add facial tracking to the mix, and you’ve got a phone that can quite literally follow you around while you shoot yourself. The 200MP gimbal main camera also makes the front-camera experience look almost unfair by comparison.
This is a creator’s phone, not just a weird phone
The biggest reason I think creators will love this isn’t actually the gimbal. It’s everything surrounding it. The Robot Phone lets you shoot up to 4K/120fps, while portrait gimbal video uses a crop and tops out around 2.7K. That’s still plenty for social media, but if you want the full-resolution experience, landscape is the way to go.

Then there’s the HONOR-ARRI collaboration, which takes this from “cool phone camera” to something I can actually imagine using for serious work. You can shoot 10-bit ARRI LogC3 footage, preview ARRI Looks, and retain the underlying Log footage even when a Look is applied. More importantly, I don’t have to think about the workflow afterward. The footage is already on my phone, the phone is already connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, and sharing is just… sharing. No extra camera, no Bluetooth pairing, no second battery, no memory card shuffle, and no finding that USB cable nonsense. Even if Instagram doesn’t support the Robot Phone’s gimbal functionality directly, I can still shoot on it and upload normally. I just can’t use the gimbal for an Instagram livestream.
The robot part is weird — but weirdly useful
The AI side is where things get considerably stranger. HONOR’s YOYO Robot Mode can physically move the gimbal around, scan the environment, recognize objects, react to gestures, and generally make the phone feel less like a slab of glass and more like a tiny creature that has somehow acquired a smartphone.

I got a small taste of this while sitting at a riverside cafe. The phone could look around, recognize the setting, identify my cappuccino, and even notice that someone nearby was recording me. There are also more playful tricks, including making the robot bob its head to music. I’m not entirely convinced that my productivity will improve because my phone can dance, but I can absolutely see kids being obsessed with it.
The gimmick that got me
The real surprise for me was just how refined the Robot Phone feels. We see plenty of first-gen products where the obvious reaction is, “Cool idea, maybe give them another year.” This wasn’t that. I picked it up, played around with it, and almost immediately thought, I’d actually buy this. Sure, the sliding cover adds another moving part, IP54 feels a little dated, and whether that tiny robotic arm can survive years of abuse is something only time will tell. But even the well-used demo unit I handled showed no obvious signs of giving up.

And that’s what stuck with me. HONOR took what sounds like a completely bonkers idea and somehow made it practical. It isn’t just a phone doing a robot impression; it’s a genuinely useful camera, a surprisingly capable gimbal, and a creator tool, all hiding inside something you can put in your pocket. The weirdest thing about the Robot Phone isn’t that it has a robot arm. It’s that, after using it, I actually want one.
Longtime Slashdot reader fahrbot-bot shares a report from ScienceAlert: Scientists have now demonstrated one of the weirdest forms of ice yet — under preposterous pressures up to 2.3 million atmospheres, and tremendous temperatures up to 2,630 kelvins (2,357 degrees Celsius, or 4,274 degrees Fahrenheit). […] In their new experiments, a team led by physicist Alexis Forestier of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission subjected tiny samples of water to the sorts of extreme conditions expected in the interiors of ice giant planets.
They squeezed the samples between the tips of diamonds to pressures as high as 230 gigapascals, while using lasers to heat them to thousands of degrees. That’s 2.3 million times Earth’s atmospheric pressure at sea level â” the pressure at the center of Earth, for context, is around 360 gigapascals. Then, using an extremely narrow beam of synchrotron X-rays, they probed for changes in the crystal structure of the ice.
What emerged was a configuration predicted theoretically but never unambiguously observed in experiments: hexagonal close-packed, or hcp, ice. As the hcp crystal was heated, its expansion also showed a signature of superionic behavior, suggesting it entered the superionic state at around 1,700 kelvins. [Superionic ice is thought to exist deep inside Uranus and Neptune, where its unusual properties may play a role in generating the planets’ equally unusual magnetic fields.] The findings have been published in Physical Review Letters.

It’s no secret that tools are extremely useful but can also be extremely dangerous. You wouldn’t cut a piece of wood with a drill, for example, but that advice also includes important tidbits like reading the manual, which you should be doing for all of your tools. Manuals are important because they show you how your tool was designed to be used, even if you’ve used another tool like it before.

Table saws are some of the most dangerous tools that money can buy, and one of the most popular such items at Home Depot is the Ryobi 13-Amp 8-1/4-inch Portable Table Saw. This is pretty standard fare as far as table saws go, and includes common features like anti-kickback pawls, a decently designed rip fence, and, of course, the 8-1/4-inch blade. However, Ryobi table saws generally don’t have any flesh-sensing technology, and accidents have been known to happen. Ryobi also has a ONE+ 18V cordless version as well, which has many of the same features but with battery power.
Approximately 40,000 people end up in the emergency room every year due to table saw accidents, and it’s mostly for the same reason. Table saws spin quickly and have sharp saw blades. Most of them don’t automatically stop quickly even when a body part makes contact, resulting in serious injury. One way to help prevent that is to read Ryobi’s manual, which is available on the company’s website for every tool they sell. They spin ridiculously fast, and if used incorrectly, can shatter the blade, sending shrapnel everywhere at high speeds. DeWalt 20V MAX 12-inch Chainsaw
Chainsaws are a common tool. They’re good for cleaning up trees and other wood messes, and are used extensively by landscapers, arborists, and forestry workers. Typical DIYers at home don’t have as much of an occasion to use them, so there is a skill gap there versus professionals. Woodworking is generally cool but can be quite dangerous. Planers, joiners, and other woodworking machinery account for a little over 10,000 injuries per year, and so while they may not put up the same numbers as sharper power tools, they should still definitely be used with care. I remember using a band saw in shop class as a kid and feeling intrinsically nervous around it. The blade is pretty thin, and it stays still while I move, so I always practiced proper safety to make sure I didn’t accidentally take off a finger. If you pick one up, the Wen 2.8-Amp 9-inch Band Saw is a decent option. It can sit on top of your work surface, which means it’s movable if you need it to move. Welding tools get very hot, very bright, and are powered by potentially dangerous gases if those gases are held improperly. The NFPA says that nearly half a million welding injuries occur yearly, and that hot work was responsible for nearly 3,400 structure fires annually between 2017 and 2021. That makes them one of the most dangerous tools you can get. If you’ve ever seen the movie “Happy Gilmore,” then you probably already know why proper nail gun safety is important. Today’s nail guns are plentiful, and you can even get cordless, battery-powered ones like the Ryobi HP 18V AirStrike Brad Nailer. This little guy can fire over 2,200 nails per charge, and it’s designed for easy visibility when you need to drive a lot of nails. DeWalt 15-amp 12-inch Compound Miter Saw
Miter saws are important to woodworking, letting you make all sorts of cuts. They’re quite different from a circular saw, and beginners may want to do a little bit of research before choosing one or the other for a specific job. Weller 30W/120V Soldering Iron
We’ve already talked about welding and how many people get injured from it. Soldering isn’t too different in that it’s a similar process to welding, but on a much smaller scale and with admittedly safer tools. Soldering irons don’t cause a high number of catastrophic injuries, but they can cause quite a lot of damage to the items around them, especially if handled improperly. Home Depot sells the Weller 30W Soldering Iron, which is a decent entry-level soldering iron for those starting out. It comes with an LED ring to light up your workspace and several tip designs to solder different types of things.
If you’ve never read a soldering iron manual before, it’s worth your time. Weller keeps its manuals on product pages like most other toolmakers, so they’re pretty easy to find. Soldering irons are all about skill rather than complex moving parts, so once you get the gist of the basics, like not soldering near flammable liquids and making sure the soldering iron is off if you’re not using it, you’re pretty much ready to go. Most common soldering mistakes can happen with any soldering iron, like choosing the wrong temperature, so make sure to do additional research as well if you’ve never done it before.

Milwaukee M18 Fuel 6-1/2-inch Circular Saw
Circular saws are quite powerful and can be used in a lot of different ways. I personally used one to cut pieces of wood to repair the underside of my sink just this year. Roughly 85,000 injuries occur yearly from mowing the lawn, which includes 6,400 serious injuries and 70 fatalities, with over 9,000 of those injuries happening to kids under the age of 18. So, if you’re buying something like the Ryobi 40V HP 20-inch Lawn Mower, there are some things you should know. Generally speaking, the advice in Ryobi’s manual for its lawn mowers is simple and only really deals with how to use it, so we’ll take up the mantle and add some safety tips here. Don’t wear open-toed shoes while mowing, make sure the blade comes to a complete stop before flipping the mower over, and don’t let kids under the age of 12 use it at all. Don’t ride in tandem with riding mowers, and don’t mow in wet grass to avoid slipping and sliding your foot up under the mower. Also, check your yard before mowing to remove anything your mower could turn into a projectile.

String trimmers are dangerous for pretty obvious reasons. They whip the string around very quickly, and if any of that touches your body, it’s going to hurt quite a lot. There are an estimated 4,600 injuries occurring yearly due to string trimmers, and most of them come from string trimmers throwing stones, sticks, and other objects at high speeds right back at you. There’s another important thing too. A lot of today’s string trimmers, like the DeWalt Flexvolt 60V String Trimmer, allow for attachments. You can take off the string trimmer attachment and put other tools on instead. Many toolmakers do this, and many people don’t know about the various attachments.

So, going to the manufacturer’s website and grabbing the manual is just half the battle. String trimmer safety is mostly just about avoiding rocks, wearing eye protection in case something is thrown at you, and not letting the string touch you. However, if you do get one of these newfangled attachment-capable string trimmers, you’ll also want to download the manual for those attachments to get safety tips for each tool. For example, one attachment for the DeWalt is an edger attachment that has its own manual. So, make sure to read the manuals for all of them and not just the base tool.

This isn’t a product recommendation article, so for this list, we chose tools from a variety of toolmakers that were all included because they were competent options in their space with positive and plentiful user reviews, showing that a lot of people buy these tools. The tool categories chosen were selected because they were shown to have a high number of injuries, serious or otherwise, or property damage that is often caused by misuse of the tool. Less than 48 hours after Automattic’s board placed Matt Mullenweg on leave, Mullenweg told employees he was back “in control” of the company and that the board was again in agreement. 404 Media cited Slack screenshots late Thursday evening where Mullenweg posted “Don’t call it a comeback” and linked to LL Cool J’s music video for “Mama Said Knock You Out.” “Mullenweg’s Slack profile picture currently shows him wearing a pirate hat and eyepatch,” the report notes. From the report: “Happy to announce the board is back in agreement, and I’m in control of Automattic,” Mullenweg wrote in the company-wide Announcements channel on Slack. “A lot happened in the past 48 hours that we need to sort out, and I hope much of it was a misunderstanding, because I have huge respect and regard for those involved.”
Mark Davies, Automattic’s CFO who was set to act as interim CEO according to a statement from Automattic, had his Slack account deactivated as of at least Friday, sources told 404 Media and TechCrunch similarly reported. Davies, Mullenweg, and Automattic did not respond to 404 Media’s requests for comment for this story. Techcrunch reported that Mullenweg told them a blog post is forthcoming.
On Friday morning, Mullenweg published a blog post on his personal website, titled “Major Life Announcement.” In it he announced he’s buying a tugboat. “Anybody who’s founded a company and had to find good stewards knows that no one will love a thing quite like the original owner, but sometimes you can find the perfect person to carry the torch,” he wrote in the blog. He did not address the confusion surrounding his status at Automattic. The back-and-forth follows years of legal fights, layoffs, employee departures, and controversy surrounding Mullenweg’s leadership.
